“NasalGuard is drug-free and safe for children, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, and those concerned about potential drug interactions with other medications,” says Kanika Wahi, a biomedical engineer and co-inventor of the micriofiltration technology. “As people take protective measures to help themselves during this time, NasalGuard is another tool in their arsenal of prevention. We at NasalGuard are proud to support the frontline healthcare workers as well as anyone else in need of preventative products.”

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods. Unfortunately, there are no cures for progressive dementias that are linked to plaque tangles in the brain and changes in the way the brain processes the protein alpha-synuclein. Patience and various medications may be needed to help those with dementia live fuller lives. Cholinesterase inhibitors are mainstays in dementia treatment. These medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for learning and memory. Acetylcholine supports communication among nerve cells by keeping acetylcholine levels high. Physical therapy and cognitive therapy may be used in conjunction with medication to assist those with various dementias.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Half of Seniors Have H. Pylori Infection --DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you give some additional information about H. pylori infection? I was diagnosed with it recently via biopsies taken during an endoscopic procedure. I was given instructions on antibiotics to be taken, which I followed through on. When talking to my doctor’s physician assistant, I asked what could have caused the infection to try to prevent it from recurring. I was given a very cursory response, including that it could have come from eating at “Mom and Pop” restaurants. From research I did after that, it seems that it can be present for a long period of time without being noticed, and many times the cause is unsure. After I finished the antibiotics, I was told to have a follow-up test to make sure they were effective. I was given a choice of a stool test or a breathing test; I chose the breathing test. I was surprised at how easy it was. Are those tests also used to initially detect an infection, without a biopsy? -- A.J.Y. ANSWER: Helicobacter pylori is an important cause of chronic gastritis (stomach inflammation), the most important cause of stomach ulcers, and is an important factor in stomach cancer and intestinal lymphoma. Between 50% and 66% of the population of the world is affected. The older a person is, the more likely he or she is to have infection: In the U.S., it’s about 10% in those between 18 and 30 years old, but 50% in those over 60. This likely represents an improvement in hygiene, as most infections are acquired in childhood and persist throughout life. It is thought that most infection occurs person-to-person, possibly through water or from poor handwashing before food preparation. H. pylori is much more common in developing nations. In the U.S., infection is more common in people of lower socioeconomic status. Not everyone with H. pylori has symptoms or needs treatment. People with ulcers or gastritis are generally treated with several antibiotics for 10-14 days along with antacid medicine. The diagnosis can be made by biopsy, as yours was, or by the stool or breath test. The breath test is at least 95% specific (if the test is positive, it’s very likely to be a true positive) but 90% sensitive, meaning one person in 10 with the bacteria will have a false negative test. The stool test is close to 95% sensitive and specific. Blood testing is more likely to have false positive and false negative results. In addition to making the diagnosis, the stool or breath test is recommended to confirm eradication of the infection. For more reading, I’d recommend you start at https:// medlineplus.gov/helicobacterpyloriinfections.html.

Spring into Conservation with this Monroe County Program! BY SCOTT WURTZEL & AMANDA DUDEK

A

lthough it may not quite feel like it yet, spring is coming our way very quickly. If you enjoy nature and growing things, your green thumbs may be starting to tingle. The Monroe County Soil and Water (MCSW) Conservation District is here to help you make the most of your spring planting. The MCSW Conservation District’s annual conservation tree, shrub, and plant program has started for the spring, and they are looking to sell a variety of items to support the community to help in the local conservation efforts. The MCSW offers “a wide variety of evergreens, hardwood trees, shrubs, wildflowers, groundcovers, seed mixes, plant variety conservation packs, and even enhancement items like bluebird nesting boxes and bat roosting boxes! Proceeds from the annual sale will benefit the MCSW Conservation District’s education and preservation programs.” These programs include youth education, explaining the important process of conservation, the repercussions of natural ills such as pollutants, stormwater runoff, and soil erosion while encouraging future generations to preserve our beautiful natural world.

Getting involved in local conservation is crucial. The MCSW includes some reasoning behind this in their catalog, including answers as to why planting native species is beneficial. “Planting trees and shrubs is perhaps the most effective way for individuals to help keep our environment clean and green,” the MCSW explains. “In addition to providing shade, privacy, wildlife habitat, borders, windbreaks and snow fences, trees provide many environmental benefits not visible to the eye. They work as filters to help protect drinking water, clean the air of pollutants, help mitigate stormwater runoff and stabilize soil to prevent erosion, and reduce noise by acting as sound barriers.” The MCSW Conservation District is not the only district promoting conservation, of course. The Livingston County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Ontario County Soil

and Water Conservation District, and the SWC districts in most other New York counties are also taking greenery orders. The information provided by these local conservation districts is extremely helpful, including such facts as what kind of soil each plant needs, whether it grows quickly, moderately or slowly, as well as the expected full-grown height of the plant. It also suggests best uses for each item, such as erosion prevention and windbreak. Experts also sing the praises of conservation. In her article on the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service site, author Ciji Taylor also supports growing plants. “By incorporating native plants into conservation practices, a landowner can achieve their primary resource concern and provide wildlife habitat,” Taylor stated. “For example, using native grasses in filter strips reduces nutrient runoff and provides habitat for several species of wildlife. Native plants can be used in several conservation practices or planted in your home garden.” While some of the plants offered by these conservation districts are not native species, they have been proven to grow well locally, and they mitigate a host of environmental conservancy and protection ills. Spring is a time of rebirth and new life, reigniting one’s love of nature. Even a few additional trees and shrubs can make a difference to your property, local wildlife, and the earth. To get involved with local conservation, visit the MCSW’s catalog here. For more information, visit www.monroecountyswcd.org. ° µ ¾ À À ¾ É Ì Ñ Ò Ì Ñ ÒÓ À

TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said.

No Bookin Event fo 2021! Birthdays, Showers, Weddings, Meetings, Golf Outings and more!

Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If your pooch doesn’t like to poop in the snow, here’s a great trick to secure a patch of grass (even if frozen). Lay a square of plywood down on the ground with a rope secured as a handle. After a snow, pull up the wood to reveal the ground underneath. * Use mismatched socks to protect glass items when transporting them from place to place, or even in storage. * Refillable spray bottles work best for cleaners. Refills can be economical, they put less waste in the system, and here’s one more reason: less propellants used, which can be a serious irritant to lungs. Purchase an attractive bottle, and then look up some recipes for ecofriendly cleaners. You might be surprised how well they work and how great they smell! * “Add some nuts to your morning cereal or smoothie for a nutritious boost. It’s not just for oatmeal or granola. I like to crush a handful of walnuts and sprinkle them across my waffles.” -- J.E. in Maine * Get rid of the smell of burned popcorn in your microwave by setting a bowl of coffee grounds in it overnight. Somehow, when you remove it in the morning, it smells of neither popcorn nor coffee! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles We Seniors Have Financial Clout Have you given any thought to just how much financial clout we seniors have? Not because we necessarily have a lot of money, but because there are so many of us. As a “silver block” we can make some changes. And with every day that passes, more and more people join our group. Shopping locally has immediate benefits close to home. According to the Small Business Administration, for every $100 spent locally, $48 of it stays in the community. At a big-box chain store, only $14 stays in town. Consider that every local purchase you make might actually be the one that keeps a neighbor employed as small businesses struggle to stay open. Foods that are made locally will be in your hands when they’re fresher. And you’re likely to get better service and free delivery from a local business that’s grateful for your order. Check a list of stores in your area to see if they have websites. If not, call and ask how orders are placed. Look for local farmers who sell their products at farmers markets. Call local appliance dealers before your next big purchase. Contact bakeries, shoe stores, and toy, pet and furniture stores that are locally owned. If shopping locally is too limiting, expand your view to goods made in the U.S.A. As a block, we have a lot of clout there as well. Finding those items, however, can be difficult. When it comes to products made in America, here are a few websites that list by category dozens or hundreds of items made here: I Buy American Store (www.ibuyamericanstore.com). Made in America Store (madeinamericastore.com). Clark Howard (clark.com). Put “Made in America” in the search box and look for 100-plus brands made in the U.S.A. Do your homework before you place an order. Call the individual manufacturer to verify that the items are indeed made in America.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Local Shelters Need Your Help DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I run a shelter in a rural area, and I wanted your readers to know that there is still a great need for donations of any kind at my shelter and just about every animal shelter in the country. While cash is the biggest way to help a local shelter obtain food, medical supplies and other items to take care of lost and abandoned pets, we also accept donations of goods. Pet food, old blankets and pet toys are always appreciated. The best way to make sure your donation is needed is to call your local shelter and ask what they need! Believe me, shelter workers won’t hesitate to tell you, because they know what items are needed and they usually need them right away. -- Carol in Alexandria, Louisiana DEAR CAROL: Thank you for all that you do for animals! Readers, take note that animal shelters, like many businesses, are struggling and getting by day to day during this ongoing pandemic. Anything that you can donate will be appreciated. Find local shelters by searching online or on Facebook. Contact the shelters by phone or email to find out what they need. One thing I see a big call for from rescue shelters is old newspapers. These are used to line the bottom of cages -- they are easy to put in and easy to clean up. Used collars and leashes also are welcome. If you don’t have pet items to donate, find out if the shelter needs office supplies. Pens, printer paper, sticky notes, file folders and other items may be gratefully accepted. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

ELECTRICAL

When you need an electrician…

Ask for help. There’s no shame in asking for help to complete a project. Some homeowners may underestimate the scope of a project until it’s too late. Asking family, friends or neighbors for help might be the only way to get a stalled project back on track. Certain home improvement projects may not require advanced skills, and even friends or family with little or no home improvement experience can pitch in to complete such projects. When more advanced projects stall, homeowners may want to hire contractors to complete the work. If budgets have not left much room for hiring a contractor, homeowners can perform some of the labor on their own.

Such systems often employ French drains that are built through or around the perimeter of a property. French drains are typically a trench that contains perforated plastic pipe and is backfilled with gravel. Water runs into these channels and gets swept away by the piping. Do-it-yourselfers may want to try installing drainage systems themselves. However, because excavation is necessary, it’s often best to have the property inspected and marked for utilities, then have the drainage system installed by professionals.

GUIDE TO PROPER TREE PRUNING When deciding how much to prune, less is usually more. All pruning can put some level of stress on the tree and increase its vulnerability to disease and insect infestation. A good rule of thumb is to never prune more than 25 percent of the crown. According to experts at TreeHelp.com, living branches should comprise at least two-thirds the height of the tree. In some instances, the rules may need to be bent if trees are interfering with utility lines or to meet community laws. However, always prune minimally to avoid damaging the tree.

But to return to Hebron. Eternal life having been promised to Abram and Christ by constituting them heirs of the land of Canaan for ever; the Lord proceeded to grant Abram a sign whereby he might know assuredly that he and his seed should inherit it. The sun having gone down entirely, which was figurative of the setting of “the Sun of Righteousness” below the horizon of life, Abram beheld “a smoking furnace, and a flame of fire pass between the pieces.” This was a sign which could not be mistaken. The animals he had slain, and watched, and defended so long from the birds of prey, were consumed by fire from heaven. By this he knew, and was assured, that he and his seed, the Christ, should inherit the land for ever. But this was not all. On the same day, the Lord converted His promise made at Sichem, and repeated near Bethel, into a covenant with Abram, as Moses testifies, saying, “in the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abraham, saying, unto thy Seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:” inhabited by “the Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaim, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girghashites, and the Jebusites” (Gen. 15). In commenting upon these things, the apostle saith, “the covenant previously confirmed by God concerning Christ the law which came into existence four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should muke the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance (the land of Canaan and its attributes) be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise” (Gal. 3:17-18). To understand this we must know, that a question agitated the congregations of Galatia, namely, that it was necessary for the disciples from among the Gentiles to be circumcised, and to keep the law of Moses as well as to believe the gospel and be baptized, or they could have no part in the inheritance covenanted to Abraham and Christ. The apostle styles this judaizing, and preaching “another gospel.” It was the beginning of that awful apostasy, the fruit of which we behold in the ecclesiastical system of our day. He contended strenuously against this perversion of the truth in all places. The Judaizers argued that a right to Canaan when made a heavenly country under Christ, was derived from the law of Moses; the apostle denied this, and maintained that the law could give no title to it. That it could only be obtained “through the righteousness of the faith;” “for the promise that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. For if they who are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of none effect: because the law worketh wrath. Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end that the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that (portion of the seed) only which is of the law, but to that also which is or the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,” both Jews and Gentiles, “before God whose promises he believed;” as it is written, “a father of many nations have I constituted thee” (Rom. 4:13-14, 16-17). The Judaizers claimed a right to the inheritance because they bore the seal of the covenant, marked in their flesh by circumcision; the apostle, because he believed the same things that Abraham did, and was the subject of God’s righteousness through the faith of Jesus Christ, without any title derived from the law of Moses. Seeing that he threw the law out of the question altogether, he anticipates the objection, viz., if this be so, wherefore, then, serveth the law? Of what use is it? To this he replies, “It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made.” “It was a schoolmaster until Christ; but when “the things of the Name of Jesus Christ” were manifested for faith; or, as he expresses it, “after that faith is come,” Israel is “no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all,” both Jews and Gentiles, “the children of God in Christ Jesus through the faith” (Gal. 3:19-29). Interested? Contact Baxter Sharp, 4306 Hammocks Dr., Geneseo, NY 14454

Dangerous! To the local laundry mat: Some salt would be nice in front of the door. If someone falls, it’s a lawsuit. I'm changing to a different place.

s e v Ra Top this one! There are many great stories of “paying it forward,”but this time, I was on the receiving end of a very surprising and generous one. Stepping out from behind the same BJ’s gas pump I was about to use, not only did “Paul” offer to fill my gas tank on this cold, blistery day, but he also refused to use my credit card! He had already paid on the other side of the gas pump! His only request was that I “Pay it forward,” which I have done, and will continue to do. Thanks again, Paul, for your thoughtfulness and generosity. Best wishes, and God bless you!

Big shout out! Big shout out to the Village of Avon for the great job they did clearing a section of the roadside on River St. It really opened that space. Thanks for all the work you do to keep our village the beautiful place it is!! River Street resident Signs of spring! There are signs of Spring everywhere! COVID is one day closer to being in the rearview mirror, and we have all learned new coping skills to get us through. Not that my family has been unscathed by illness and loss, but I’m still grateful every day that we’re headed in the right direction.

Thanks, Dogwood! The folks at the Dogwood Trading Company are always pleasant and professional. They are top notch!

Essential workers If I hear "Thank you for all you're doing" one more time, I'm gonna puke! I've been working through this whole pandemic while others have been working from home, and it just doesn't mean anything to say thank you anymore! Maybe a paid day off or a little extra money would go a lot further than the "Thank You" in the front yard! Let it go I am stunned by the number of Trump 2020 flags, banners, and signs that are still all over [local] County. It is time to take them down. If you wish to purchase a Trump 2024 flag, feel free to do so and fly it at the appropriate (election) time. I thought that all election signs were supposed to be taken down in a timely manner according to local ordinances. Let's move on, please!

“No one who is occupied in doing a very difficult thing, and doing it very well, ever loses his self-respect…” ~ George Bernard Shaw

Carnations One of the most popular choices for sympathy arrangements, carnations of various colors have different meanings. A red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence.

We may not always be able to command great respect from our peers, but if we can retain a good self-image and respect ourselves, we need little else. Self-respect can be built on conspicuous accomplishment but not too many of us are so gifted. Shaw tells us that if we concentrate on doing one difficult thing…our daily occupation, perhaps?…and doing it very well, we retain our self-respect. It’s something every one of us can do. Every adult who might some day be required to make funeral arrangements, should be well-informed. Our staff is available to answer any and all of your funeral-related questions, without obligation.

POINTS OF REFERENCE According to the Population Reference Bureau (PRB), a nonprofit organization that collects and supplies statistics necessary for research and academic applications, more than 108 billion humans have ever been born. With the current population of the world standing close to 8 billion people, it is easy to see that the number of humans lying buried beneath the earth in cemeteries and other sites vastly outnumbers the number of people walking the earth, and will continue to do so. With this in mind, we can realize that the pursuit of adequate cemetery space is a concern that far predates the current “green burial” movement’s current concerns. Over the centuries, Parisians, Londoners, and Romans have faced cemetery relocation and expansion issues. People often select a funeral home or cemetery because it’s close to home, has served the family in the past, or has been recommended by someone they trust. But limiting the search to just one funeral home may risk paying more than necessary for the funeral or narrowing the choice of goods and services. To learn more about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. She was taken swiftly by an aggressive cancer. Marge was the youngest of six siblings. She graduated with Honors in 1951 from the Ralpho Township High School in Elysburg, PA. She was voted by her senior classmates as most athletic. In 1952, Marge moved to Churchville, NY at the urging of her sister, Anna. In 1953, she met JB Morgan, marrying the same year after a whirlwind courtship. They raised three energetic children, beginning their life in Caledonia, NY, and then moving to Leicester, NY, in 1963. JB passed away suddenly in April 1986 leaving Marge a widow for seventeen years. After a chance meeting and a brief time dating, she married Jim Leathersich in November 2003. They shared their elder years together, especially enjoying the winter months in Arizona. Marge worked full-time until the age of 80 in agricultural endeavors. She was an exceptional farmer, operating all kinds of large machinery, usually with a dog on her lap and a cup of coffee in her hand. She had a natural green thumb and could make anything grow. Marge was extremely versatile! Her resume of skills included: accurate weather prediction, canning, cooking, baking, sewing, knitting and crocheting, exterior and interior painting, wallpapering, climbing ladders, building maintenance, furniture refinishing, scrubbing and cleaning, flower gardening, shoveling everything and anything, plowing, planting, harvesting, and pouring concrete. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

Albert W. Kreyl February 26, 2021 Livonia, NY: At age 93, Albert passed peacefully at his home on February 26, 2021. Albert studied architecture at Brooklyn Technical High School. After graduation he served in the U.S. Navy during the end of World War II. After they both graduated in 1951, the young couple moved to New York City. WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING, HOW YOU CAN HELP (NAPSI)—The global pandemic brought home to many people just how interconnected the world has become. This is true about the need to protect the environment, as well. According to the National Institutes of Health, the way to preserve human health is by maintaining the environment because polluted air, water and land encourages such sicknesses as asthma and lead poisoning, while global warming fosters the spread of disease. Fortunately, throughout the country, efforts large and small are helping to resolve this.

What’s Being Done For example, one major American corporation with a long, proud history of environmental sustainability and a strong track record of action and success has raised the bar on its environmental commitments and accelerated the progress of short- and long-term goals that meet or exceed environmental regulations. As Marc Bitzer, Chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corporation put it. “As we continue to navigate the impact of COVID-19, the health and safety of our employees and communities remain our priority. We strongly believe that our sustainability efforts are as important now as ever. These efforts are guided by a clear mission to earn trust and create demand while in constant pursuit of improving life at home.” To that end, the company has: • Reduced its absolute plant emissions by 18% by investing in efficiency and renewable energy; • Achieved zero waste to landfill in eight plants across three regions; • Accomplished a global waste-torecycling rate of 96%; and
