Penny Saver PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Play It Safe, Keep Cats Inside
Active Living 50+ ____________________14
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m staying inside during this emergency, as the state government has requested, but I still let my tomcat “Dodger” out during the day. He would go crazy being stuck inside. However, my daughter told me to stop letting him out, because she says pets can get coronavirus, too. Is Dodger in danger? Could he get it and spread it to me? – Darlene B., Springfield, Massachusetts
Auctions & Antiques ____________________36 Automotive ____________________22 Body & Mind ____________________17 Classifieds ____________________46 Employment ____________________42
DEAR DARLENE: Currently, no pets within the U.S. are known to have contracted the coronavirus. A tiger at the Bronx Zoo reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 (and six more tigers are showing symptoms). But there’s very little data to work with right now. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not have definitive evidence that pets can contract COVID-19, they are playing it safe and urging owners to protect their pets from exposure to the virus. So you should, too. You don’t know where Dodger goes when he’s out, so you don’t know if he is being exposed to this virus or other viruses or bacteria that are much more easily contracted and can cause serious illness. Keep him inside and find ways to keep him from losing his mind. That includes spending more time playing with him, making sure he has plenty of toys, and giving him scratching and climbing spots, plus a hideaway. If his behavior gets worse, contact the veterinarian -- Dodger may need to take medication to calm him down for the short term. Also, because he’s been outside, you need to take precautions for yourself. Wash your hands after petting or picking up Dodger, and after cleaning his litter box. Wash his food and water bowls daily in hot soapy water. Here’s to both of you staying healthy and safe!

2018. He was emaciated, had mange and was terrified. I brought him home as a foster but officially adopted him one month later. Sophia was given to us by a friend this February. We weren’t expecting her, and it took a couple weeks for Ali to accept her. Sophia was only 10 lbs. so I was worried he’d accidentally hurt her. He had never met such a small, brave puppy before. Sophia is gaining 2 pounds a week, so she’ll probably be bigger than him! Having two dogs is not only fun, but it’s good for them too. They’re best friends forever now. They spend their time either wrestling, running around, stealing each other’s toys or cuddling. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day • Wednesday, April 22nd
Your Backyard Isn’t Cancelled…
6 Tips
To Celebrate Earth Day Right At Home
(NAPSI)—The 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22 can be a good time for everyone to take some time to get outside, even if current conditions mean a community event to celebrate isn’t available. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to honor the Earth in your own backyard. “You don’t need to leave home to celebrate Earth Day. Remember, nature starts at your back door,” explains Kris Kiser, President of the TurfMutt Foundation, an organization that encourages outdoor learning experiences, stewardship of green spaces, and care for living landscapes for the benefit of all. “Get outside, mow your lawn, trim bushes, plant a butterfly bush. By becoming a steward of your yard, you are helping the planet. At the same time, you’re supporting your health and well-being, which is increasingly important as families spend more time at home.”
1
Get outside. Your backyard is an outdoor living room and safe place for pets and kids to play. Science proves spending time in your family’s yard is good for your health and well-being, and so important today as everyone looks for creative ways to stay well while being confined to the home. Researchers have found that people living in neighborhoods with more birds, shrubs and trees are less likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and stress.
Research shows people who gardened for at least 30 minutes a week had lower body mass indexes as well as higher levels of self-esteem and better moods overall. They also reported lower levels of tension and stress.
2
Make the outdoors a family project. Take your loved ones outside to assess your space. What’s working well? What could be improved? What can you plan to do together in your backyard? Anything needing to be cleaned up? Make a plan to expand or spruce up your yard.
3
Connect kids to nature. Free, online, do-at-home lesson plans are available from the TurfMutt.com. The environmental education program resources and activities, based on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) principles, give kids the prompts they need to have fun learning about and exploring the nature and science in their own backyards.
4
Know your climate zone. Learn about climate-zone-appropriate plants, the importance of pollinators, and how backyards can support local wildlife. Conduct a plant inventory to determine what’s currently thriving in your backyard. Match that up against the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map to determine the best types of turf, trees, shrubs, and plants for the climate zone.
5
Keep pollinators in mind. Your yard is an important part of the connected ecosystem providing much-needed food and shelter for pollinators, such as birds, bees, butterflies, bats, and other creatures. Select a variety of plants that will bloom all year long. The Audubon Society’s database can help determine which birds will be attracted to which plants for unique regions so you can make good choices about what to plant.
6
Plant, prune or mow. Staying confined to home base doesn’t mean gardening and yard work have to stop. Order garden supplies online or have them delivered from a nearby nursery. Mow the lawn and trim bushes.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Summer Dreams Surely our world will be back to normal this summer ... right? Surely we’ll be able to get out of the house without fearing every person who comes near us. We’ll be able to leisurely wander through the grocery store, which will be stocked as it used to be. We’ll stop to talk to friends on the street and sit in coffee shops and chat. We’ll attend church, go to our meetings, stroll through the neighborhood admiring the flowers and take part in our exercise classes. Surely we’ll be able to do those things again, right? Yes. We will. But first we have to get there. To get back to where we used to be, we have to stay healthy now. We need exercise to stay healthy. Even if you can’t go to a class, you can find plenty of them for seniors on YouTube. Look through the offerings and bookmark a few. Rotate through them on a daily basis so you don’t get bored. Go to youtube.com and put “exercises for seniors” in the search box. Some of them are even broken down by age. We need to stay mentally healthy as well, despite the television news. Check the Good News Network online [www.goodnewsnetwork.org] for positive, uplifting stories. You also can put “good news” in your browser search box. It’s been difficult to get grocery store deliveries in a lot of areas because they have little stock. However, if you get delivery of your prescriptions (many pharmacies are providing this service now), call to ask whether they can add a few things to your order. Many drugstores carry soups, crackers, milk, canned fruits and vegetables, bottled water and snacks -- some even carry a limited supply of fresh fruit.

Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial. Pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels. Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors – including those who may be divorced or widowed – feel more secure and happy. Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so. • Reduce pain: A recent study found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.” • Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal not only stimulates physical activity, but it also can give seniors a reason to get up and go, which equates to a feeling of purpose. • Altered focus: Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues and preoccupations about loss or aging. • Increased physical activity: Pets require care, and that interaction can get seniors moving more than if they didn’t have a pet. • Improved health: Ongoing research has found dog owners have lower blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t own a dog. • Stick to routine: Caring for pets helps seniors maintain a routine. Having structure after retirement can be important to ward off risk of depression. Staying on top of feeding, grooming and other pet needs also can help prevent cognitive decline. Pets bring many benefits to their owners’ lives, and they may be the perfect remedy for seniors looking for a friend and purpose.

HOW TO
SUCCEED AT SOCIAL DISTANCING ACCORDING TO YOUR ZODIAC SIGN
Isolation got you down? Here’s some fun suggestions on how you can help “flatten the curve” now! ARIES (MAR 21-APR 19): Now is not the time to discover whether the person you live with is truly “the one” – confinement means you literally have no other options! Instead, why don’t you tune up your relationship with yourself? Enroll for free in the Yale online course The Science of Wellbeing. The grass is always greener where you water it! TAURUS (APR 20-MAY 20): You’re slowly awakening to the fact that your former feelings of independence were just that – feelings. Time to brush up your skill sets – cooking, cleaning, and creative work. Reintegrate productivity into your daily routine with the pomodoro technique and experience the profound happiness of an ordered life. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUN 20): Flamingos don’t breed well in captivity without mirrors to create the impression of a larger group. You’re feeling the same; how can you tell the status of your work reputation if you never leave the house? Get out of your head by taking on new projects that excite you. Take ownership over your own progress – everyone will appreciate it, but most importantly, you won’t care anymore if they do! CANCER (JUN 21-JUL 22): Whether your fears are rational or irrational makes little difference – the real question you want to ask yourself is whether they are actionable. If not, do as the Stoics do and remember it is virtue – not external things – that grounds true happiness.
LEO (JUL 23-AUG 22): Your positive energy is more contagious than ever! What is more, your confinement partners are all on board to help execute your vision. As long as you don’t allow perfectionism to spoil the party, your dreams will become reality sooner than you think. VIRGO (AUG 23-SEP 22): Health is wealth, and your new workout routine is already starting to show dividends. Up the energy while helping your local economy by signing up for streaming classes available through your neighborhood gym or studio! LIBRA (SEP 23-OCT 22): Your creative juices are flowing and they must be released. Is it time to recite original poetry or strum your guitar from the front porch to passers-by? Absolutely! Who doesn’t love being serenaded, especially by someone as charming as you? SCORPIO (OCT 23-NOV 21): Confinement is suiting you just fine this week as you deepen your connection with those whom you might have been taking for granted. Try listening to an audiobook together – Towles’ A Gentleman in Moscow will speak to everyone right now. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22-DEC 21): You realize that the internet has increased our access to everything, but at the cost of replacing direct experience and limiting reality. But is there anywhere else to go now? Pascal said, “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” It will be harder, but also more rewarding, than you think. CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 19): Everyone’s been talking about COVID-19 as the “black swan.” Take charge of the rhetoric by reading Taleb’s 2007 bestseller The Black Swan, which explores how we build resilience and even robustness in the face of negative events. AQUARIUS (JAN 20-FEB 18): Look at you, just barreling through your reading list! Enhance your experience of the beautiful this week by exploring another segment – might we suggest the free Digital Concert Hall of the Berlin Philharmonic? PISCES (FEB 19-MAR 20): Knowledge and love can never be truly divided. Share the wisdom of this unity with those you love by keeping a journal of your thoughts – be they spiritual insights, cocktail recipes or dating tips – to be passed down to them as the most precious piece of their inheritance.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Don’t be put off by a seemingly too-tangled situation. Sometimes a simple procedure will unsnarl all the knots and get you in the clear fast and easy, just the way the Lamb likes it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time to go through your work space -- wherever it is -- and see what needs to be replaced and what can be tossed (or at least given away) without a second thought. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Someone who disagrees with your position might try to intimidate you. But continue to present a fair argument, regardless of how petty someone else might be while trying to make a point. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might find yourself exceptionally sensitive to family matters this week. An issue could come to light that you had overlooked. Ask other kinfolk to discuss it with you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might have more questions about a project (or perhaps someone you’re dealing with on some level) than you feel comfortable with. If so, see which can be answered, which cannot, and why. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to clean up and clear out what you don’t need before your tidy self is overwhelmed by “stuff.” Then go celebrate the Virgo victory over clutter with someone special. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might feel a mite confused about why something you were sure couldn’t go wrong didn’t go all right either. Be patient. Things soon move into balance, exactly as you like it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) At this decision point, you could be moving from side to side, just to say you’re in motion. Or you could be considering making a move straight up. What you choose is up to you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although your finances should be in an improved situation at this time, thrift is still the savvy Sagittarian’s smart move. Advice from a spouse or partner could be worth heeding. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Taking on a new challenge brings out the Goat’s skills in maneuvering over and around difficult spots. Best of all, the Goat does it one careful step after another. (Got the idea, Kid?) AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your well-known patience might be wearing thin because of a disturbing (and seemingly unending) problem with someone close to you. This could be a time to ask for help. Good luck. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be careful about a new venture that lures you into a “just look and see” mode. Be sure that what you’re being given to see isn’t hiding what you should be seeing instead. Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Husband Starting Radiation Treatment ---
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband is about to start radiation treatment for stage one cancer on his vocal chord. Does radiation negatively affect the immune system the same way chemotherapy does? Should I be looking out for people who don’t vaccinate? -- H.T. ANSWER: Radiation can affect the immune system when it is given to large areas of the body, since the immune system cells are largely sensitive to radiation. Whole-body radiation is rarely used now, except in people planning for bone-marrow transplant. By contrast, localized radiation does not adversely affect the immune system to anywhere near the degree that chemotherapy can, since the bone marrow, where the immune system cells live, is diffuse throughout the large bones of the body. As far as avoiding unvaccinated individuals, people who are unvaccinated and who are healthy do not pose a risk. It is in an outbreak of vaccine-preventable disease (there have been localized outbreaks of measles and mumps in the past year, and there are seasonal outbreaks of influenza) that unvaccinated people are much more likely to be infectious. So anyone with immune system disease (such as chemotherapy or whole-body radiation) should avoid people with potentially infectious illness. Caregivers of people with severe immune disease certainly should be immunized according to current guidelines. Even elderly people whose caregivers are immunized for flu get flu less than those whose caregivers are not. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I know women who have had double mastectomies in order to reduce the risk of cancer. It seems extreme, but I guess it depends on the evaluation of risk. Are prophylactic hysterectomies done for similar reasons? It used to be routinely done when a woman had passed her reproductive years. I’m interested in your take on this. Will health insurance cover these types of surgeries, and if not, how expensive are they? -- S.B. ANSWER: Prophylactic mastectomies -- that is, surgery to remove the breasts in order to avert a breast cancer diagnosis -- are a reasonable choice for some women at very high risk of breast cancer, especially those with a family history of breast cancer who have an identifiable genetic predisposition, such as one of the BRCA gene mutations. This decision should be made carefully and in consultation with her doctors, usually an oncologist and a genetic counselor. I have very little experience with this in my own patients, fortunately, but I understand that in the case of women with very high genetic risk, it usually is covered by insurance, if it is the consensus of the treating physicians and the patient that she should proceed. Hysterectomy -- the removal of a uterus -- is not done routinely today the way it was decades ago. They are removed for disease, either benign or malignant. However, the removal of both ovaries and Fallopian tubes, called a bilateral oophorectomy and salpingectomy, is performed in some women at high risk for ovarian cancer. In fact, women with the BRCA mutations may consider both a prophylactic double mastectomy and a prophylactic bilateral oophorectomy and salpingectomy, since BRCA mutations increase risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer (as well as other cancers). The cost of surgery in the United States varies dramatically depending on where it is done, but in general it is very expensive. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Children benefit in various ways from their involvement in youth sports. Being part of a team fosters feelings of belonging, inspires collaborative play and strategy and can be an excellent form of exercise. Still, despite the benefits, parents often worry about the injury risk their children face on the playing fields. Those fears are justified. A Safe Kids Worldwide survey of emergency room visits found that a young athlete visits a hospital emergency room for a sports-related injury more than a million times a year, or about every 25 seconds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 2.6 million children 0 to 19 years old are treated in the emergency department each year for sports- and recreation-related injuries. Some of the more common injuries young children face have to do with the skeletal and muscular systems of the body. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons stresses that children’s bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are still growing, making them more susceptible to injury. Fortunately, with some education, many youth-sport injuries can be prevented.

Wayland American Legion Hosts Easter Bunny Drive Thru By Amanda Dudek
E
aster took place a little differently this year across our nation as coronavirus restrictions remained in place through the holiday, but the Wayland American Legion, Post #402, Post Commander Kevin Mark and the Wayland Ladies Auxiliary were determined to bring the joy of Easter to the families of Wayland, particularly the children. Who better to put a smile on children’s faces than the Easter Bunny himself? “Everything has been so tough with kids and parents having to stay at home,” said Mark. “We wanted to do something for them. The Wayland Legion is home to many area children and families, and we still want to be there for our community.” They decided the best way to bring the Easter bunny to the community was to create an outdoor stop for children to drive through, see him, wave and receive, what else, candy! “We gave out Easter basket filler bags because baskets were going to be an issue to keep sanitary,” explained Mark. “The Ladies Auxiliary wore gloves and masks as they placed the candy and prefilled Easter eggs into gallon size bags. Then, we kept the bags on the porch so that people didn’t have to get out of their cars.” The community response was incredible. “We handed out 113 bags total,” Mark stated. “We were surprised and shocked! Most of the kids were ecstatic to see the Easter bunny, and it was Officer Barnhart visits the good for families to get out Easter Bunny in Wayland! of the house for a minute and do something different. Most of the kids who came were younger kids, and they really enjoyed it.” Kevin Mark feels the event was appreciated. “We have received a lot of positive feedback and a lot of thank you’s

for what we did,” he said. “People have thanked us for not being afraid to step up and do something for the community. These kids have been locked in, and it’s spring,” he continued. “It is a tough, uncertain spot in life right now. We were glad to bring some happiness to our community.” Mark thanked the Wayland Ladies Auxiliary, as well. “The Wayland Ladies Auxiliary was key, as always,” he praised them. “It was chilly that day, and they came and fought off the cold. They were awesome! The girl who helped bring us the Easter Bunny is a Junior Ladies Auxiliary member, and she was terrific!” As soon as life begins to return to normal, Mark hopes the Wayland American Legion will be able to hold many events for the community. “We are not open right now,” he said. “It is tough, but we have been doing a little work on the inside so it is refreshed when the community comes back in.”

HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it.
festivities. Not only does it add for some fun and color, but will remind your child everyone is there to celebrate them on their special day. Have kids pick a theme; whether it’s silly hats or hair, or their craziest mismatched outfit, inspire a spark of creativity and let kids reveal their looks to one another at the start of their call. It’s sure to guarantee some laughs and serve as a talking point and good distraction.
With social distancing in place, gathering a large group together whether at home or in a public setting for a birthday party isn’t necessarily an option. Have no fear though! With the right ingenuity and the aid of video calling software, those much needed social interactions and birthday celebrations are still viable! While bowling or pizza parties may be off-limits for the time being, teleconferencing can allow families to still come together. Grandma can log on to join in with singing happy birthday and watch your little one blow out candles, and cousins & friends can watch them open presents while sending virtual cards. Not only does this maintain social distancing protocols, but allows for engagement and serves as a reminder that birthdays can still be fun occasions despite everything going on. “Many motorists procrastinate when it comes to cleaning their vehicles,” said Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Whether you do it yourself or have it cleaned professionally, proactively keeping your car clean on the outside and tidy on the inside will pay big dividends when it comes to maintaining your vehicle’s value over time.” The Car Care Council suggests five simple steps to keep a vehicle clean, helping protect it from the elements and preserve its value. • Declutter—Start the cleaning process by removing excess clutter from inside the car as it can be distracting and hazardous, especially when debris finds its way near the gas and brake pedals. Don’t forget to clear out items that have accumulated in the trunk as they can add extra weight and reduce fuel efficiency.
DUMBLETON Used Auto Parts, Inc.
• Clean the Interior—The next step is to thoroughly clean the interior, wash the windows, and clean and install floor mats. Be sure to vacuum on a regular basis. A clean and orderly interior lets you spot issues in the cabin so you can get them repaired before they get worse.

• Wash the Exterior—Give your car a good wash from top to bottom using products specifically made for automobiles. Always clean the tires and wheels before washing the body and don’t use the same washing mitt or cloth for both. • Wax Twice a Year—Waxing not only protects a vehicle’s finish, it makes subsequent washing easier. Before proceeding, make sure there are no foreign particles on the paint. It’s important to note that waxing should be done in the shade, not direct sunlight. • Fix Chips—If you find minor paint damage, cover the paint chips as quickly as possible to prevent further damage. For a quick fix until you can get paint touch-up supplies, dab a little clear nail polish on the scratch. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. GENERAL CONTRACTING
HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary. • Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily. • Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit. • Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment. • Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges. • Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

REALIZE ENERGY SAVINGS WITH 1 SIMPLE STEP A simple project that will help keep your home comfortable is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit or furnace to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay Roxul ComfortBatt on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. Insulation begins working the moment it is installed and lasts throughout the life of the building, which means one easy DIY project can provide years of savings. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Ascochyta leaf blight Lawns suffering from ascochyta leaf blight will become straw-colored. According to the lawn care and pesticide experts at Ortho®, when a lawn is affected by ascochyta leaf blight, its healthy grass blades will be mixed in with diseased grass blades. Most prevalent in the spring, this disease can affect grass at any time during the growing season. That’s because the ascochyta fungi invade leaf blades through wounds, such as those that can result from mowing. Ortho® notes that dull lawn mowers can contribute to the disease, which might disappear on its own and can even return after it’s seemingly been cured.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

In some instances, whether it’s a byproduct of poor property grade or sloping land, water can pool regardless of how well the gutter system is working. Determine where the problem is and speak with a landscaper to see if there are any plants that thrive in moist conditions. The roots of these plants can protect against soil erosion and may absorb enough water to guard against puddling. In addition, amending the soil with organic matter, pea gravel or another coarse aggregate can prevent water pooling.

IMPROVE PRIVACY AND SECURITY AT HOME Privet hedge, arborvitae or Italian cypress are fast-growing evergreens that provide privacy around a home for homeowners who do not want to install traditional fencing. These trees also provide a natural habitat for various yard animals. Layering various plants of different heights and textures also can create a more natural and less imposing look. Fencing remains a viable option to create privacy and stop noise pollution. Privacy fences come in various materials, colors and sizes, enabling homeowners to choose styles that fit their landscapes.

PROBLEMS THAT CAN LEAD TO LAWN DAMAGE Lack of sunlight: All plants need the proper ratio of sunlight to grow. Too much sunlight and plant blades can scorch. Too little sunlight and grass may turn brown and die. Although there are shade-tolerant varieties of grass, homeowners also can explore alternative landscapes. Work in a garden bed or create a design that utilizes gravel or mulch. Avoid aggressively pruning back trees to give the lawn more sunlight in that area, as this may just damage the trees.

a time when people are looking to assist each other during this unprecedented crisis, this unfeeling, greedy landlord is solely focused on money. The lack of compassion is difficult to comprehend or accept.
In response to the poor bagging rant: I’m a cashier, and while I pride myself in bagging properly, I’m an anomaly. While some mistakes, such as crushing bread or mixing chemicals with food, are inexcusable - I find that most bagging issues stem from the customer rather than the cashier. When using reusable bags, it’s important to think about how you want your bags packed when you’re putting your groceries on the belt. If you want something in

a separate bag, don’t put it with everything else. If you want all your frozen items together, put them together. Put bread and similar items towards the back. If items are thrown haphazardly onto the belt, there’s just not a lot of room or time for your cashier to bag things optimally. In a letter to tenants, the management reminded tenants that failure to pay rent is a violation of their lease and will result in eviction proceedings. The tenants are understandably shocked and angered by this heartless response to the Governor’s attempt to help people in their time of need. At

Okay, so now that dog owners are doing a better job of bagging their pet’s poop when they take them for a walk, the next step is to then take that bag and throw it in the next available receptacle. I can’t believe that people are now leaving their used poop bags along the trails where they walk. What’s the inference here? Do you think someone else will take care of this for you? Come on, dog owners! If you can muster the energy to take your dog on long walks, you can certainly summon the initiative to take your poop bag with you until you can throw it away properly.

Excerpt from
Elpis Israel by John Thomas This is a most important demonstration; for it enables us to determine when we hear the gospel. The gospel is not preached when the things of the kingdom are omitted. So inseparable is the idea of gospel from that of kingdom, that we find them, not only substituted for each other, but associated together as terms of explanation. Thus, “Jesus went throughout every city and village, preaching and showing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God” (Lk. 8:1; Mk, 1:14); and in the prophecy of Mount Olivet, it is written, “THIS gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the habitable (the Roman empire) for a testimony to all the nations; and then shall come the end” (Matt. 24:14). After he rose from the dead, he commanded the apostles, saying, “go preach the gospel to every creature: he that believes and is immersed shall be saved; and he that believes not shall be condemned;” and “lo, I am with you all the days until the end of the world.” In view of these texts, can anyone be so mystified as not to see, that salvation is predicated on believing the gospel of the kingdom, and being baptized into Jesus Christ? They were to preach “this gospel of the kingdom” in the name of Jesus; how did they execute the work? “They went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming THE WORD with signs following” (Mk. 16:20), They began at Jerusalem, passed throughout Judea, then went to Samaria, and, lastly, to the end of the land. They began on the day of Pentecost, and preached only to the Jews for several years; at the end of which, Peter and Paul began to proclaim the kingdom to Gentiles also. The labors of the apostles were indefatigable. They filled the Roman empire with their doctrine; and made such an impression upon it, that tumults were excited; and they were charged with treason against the state, because they proclaimed another king than Caesar (Acts 17:7, 31) who should rule the world in righteousness as the sovereign Lord of all the earth.” They spoke the word of God with boldness.” “The multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul;” and great kindness was among them all. In about thirty years the gospel of the kingdom was proclaimed in all the world, to every creature under the heaven (Col. 1:6, 23). They finished their work, and fell asleep; the Lord having abundantly fulfilled his promise of co-operating with them to the end of the world.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “Just living is not enough. One must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.” -- Hans Christian Anderson Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

Awake, thou wintry earth Fling off thy sadness! Fair vernal flowers, laugh forth Your ancient gladness! ~Thomas Blackburn, “An Easter Hymn”
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Earth Day Tip: When choosing personal care products, apply the same eco standards as you do with food. Check the ingredients list to find safe products. Go for products that are free of dyes and perfumes. When possible, choose products that use the least packaging. * Have a bright flashlight handy in the laundry room. It’s much easier to identify stains with the right lighting. Sending a still-stained garment to the dryer can set the stain, making it much harder or impossible to remove. * Three easy steps to sear your meat: Preheat the skillet, wait 30 seconds before you add oil and pat your meat dry before placing in the skillet. * “I use a paperclip covered by tissue to clean the cracks on my keyboard.” -- I.P. in South Carolina * If you leave a load of laundry too long in the washer, you can re-run it and add a cup of white vinegar to the load to kill the musty smell of potential mildew. * “I make my own little good-behavior coupons for my three children. I print them on different colors of paper for each child. They can cash in coupons for activities or rewards, and if they go in together to get something, I will give them bonus coupons for working together. I think this has made goal-setting a priority for them, and it has helped them learn the lesson of shared goals -- an important one for a large family.” -- R.V.F. in Arizona

Teresa Kingston Coyne April 8, 2020 AVON: Teresa Kingston Coyne, 81 years, of Avon died Wednesday, April 8, 2020, at her home. She was born in Geneseo, NY, on May 2, 1938, the daughter of Walter and Regina (Powers) Kingston. Teresa is survived by her children, Peter (Lisa) Coyne of Spring Valley, WI, Katie Coyne (Grant DeBruin) of Johnson Creek, WI, Joan (Doug) Seidel of Fleetwood, PA, and John (Shannon) Coyne of Roswell, Georgia; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ceil (Paul) Becker of Snyder, NY, and Carol (Gerald) Coyne of East Avon, NY; one brother, George (Mary Jo) Kingston of Elba, NY; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ted and Dorothy Coyne of Avon, NY; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Tom; parents Walter and Regina; siblings Mary Jean, Helen Pat, Walter, and Catherine; and several in-laws.
Bob was a 1948 graduate of Caledonia High School in Caledonia, NY. He attended Princeton University for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Army where he served in Stuttgart, West Germany during the Korean War. Bob returned to complete his bachelor’s degree at the University of Rochester. Following his marriage to Jane, Bob continued his academic career earning his master’s degree and Ph.D in history from Cornell University. Graduate study brought Bob and Jane to the University of Glasgow, Scotland for a year and later to London for dissertation research. Scotland and his Scottish heritage remained very important. Bob initially taught at Williams College in Williamstown, MA. In 1967, Bob and Jane moved their family to Eau Claire, Wisconsin where Bob became a professor of history at the University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire. Bob taught British history and founded the course on World War One history. He later became Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. Bob served as president of the University Senate and received the UW-Eau Claire Excellence in Service Award, retiring in 1995. Bob led a life of service: teaching and advising students, serving on numerous faculty committees, and participating in organizations such as the Eau Claire Library Board, the IFLS Public Library System, Golden K Kiwanis, the Genealogical Research Society of Eau Claire, and the Republican Party of Eau Claire County. Bob was humble but thought three things warranted mention in his obituary: he crossed the ocean 20 times by sea (initially on a troop ship and later with Jane aboard the QE2 and QM2); he visited all 26 historic English and Welsh cathedrals; and he saw all the James Bond movies in the theater.
Teresa spent her entire life in the Genesee Valley, growing up just outside Geneseo and spending her adult life in Avon. The trip between the two towns along the east side of the valley was always cherished. Letchworth State Park and the Monastery held special places in her heart. Raised on her family’s farm and the youngest girl in a family of 10, she learned the value of hard work, service, and respect for the animals and the land. In 1958, Teresa married Tom Coyne. Throughout her marriage to Tom she worked in partnership with him on the farm and in their auction business. She was gifted at feeding both kids and calves and became an expert at writing ads and cashiering sales for Tom’s auction business. Following his passing, she was honored to work at Noblehurst Farms and Wegmans. She was a longtime member of the Livingston County Holstein Club and a 4-H leader. Saint Agnes Church, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her nieces and nephews, and the news of the day were essential in her life. Teresa’s family would like to thank all of her nieces, nephews, and nurses who cared for Teresa in her final years. A Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Agnes Church, Avon, and a burial at Saint Agnes Cemetery, Avon, at a future date. Memorial contributions can be sent to Saint Agnes Church, 108 Prospect Street, Avon, NY, 14414. To share a memory or send condolences, please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com. STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING A will is an important component of estate planning. Without clearly and legally spelling out your wishes, there is no guarantee that those wishes will be honored. It will be up to a state or province to make potentially lifealtering decisions that can impact your surviving family members, and the only way to ensure your wishes will be carried out is to put them into a will. Although men and women can write their own wills, many people prefer to seek the assistance of an attorney, who can make sure all necessary details are included in the will.
Ann found a loving community and spiritual home in the community of the Abbey of the Genesee in Piffard, NY. She sought and found solace in the retreats offered by the Abbey, subsequently became a member of the Genesee Lay Contemplatives under the direction of Fr. John Denburger, OCSO, and devoted herself to the community. Ann volunteered for the Dorothy Day House in Rochester, first in the kitchen and then as an Advocate as a way to live her faith, be present to God, and to serve those in need. Ann was an avid reader and scholar, painter, gardener, devoted friend, and loving mother. She is survived by her twin sister, Maura Eileen Prendergast-Wood of Claremont, CA; daughter, Julia F. Burch, and her wife Aixa N. Compton of Maplewood NJ, daughter, Margaret (Meg) T. Burch of Greenfield, MA; her beloved grandchildren: Kirby B. Compton-Burch, Kyle W. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her son, Thaddeus (Tad) J. Burch, her cousin, Thomas Barton, and nephew, Michael Wood.

It’s surprising that he confesses that he, like many of us, has difficulty seeing clearly within himself. Because we’re not too sure what really makes us tick, we should not be too quick to judge the way others choose to live their lives. This assumes, of course, that their lifestyle does not interfere with ours.
Special thanks to the Livonia Volunteer Ambulance and the care team at the Palliative Care Program, Strong Memorial Hospital. In lieu of flowers consider supporting the Dorothy Day House, The Abbey of Genesee, and Doctors Without Borders. A memorial Mass and committal will be held at a future date when those who knew and loved Ann can gather safely to celebrate her life. Condolences and remembrances can be left at www.AlvahHalloranAndSon.com
We can provide funeral services in any price category, starting with minimum cost immediate disposition. The cost of a funeral is entirely a matter of family preference.

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE Be mindful of decorum. The internet is a largely informal “place,” but professionals should be mindful of decorum when networking online. Resist the temptation to use shorthand, slang or less formal language when contacting other professionals, as doing so can make you appear unprofessional. In addition, avoid making potentially controversial or contentious comments on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

Schedules can help professionals in much the same way that grocery lists help consumers at the grocery store. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY Speak with your manager first. It’s respectful for your immediate manager or supervisor to learn of your departure first. This gives him or her ample time to put a plan in place to fill your position. The more notice you can give, the more goodwill you’re building on your way out the door. Schedule a meeting for this purpose; do not make it an informal chat by the water cooler. Resist the urge to quit via email or text. Resigning requires face-toface communication. Present a concise letter of resignation as well. Don’t call out colleagues or air your grievances in the letter.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.
