Stretching Pet Food While in Quarantine
Active Living 50+ ____________________20
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Because I was possibly exposed to COVID-19 at the grocery store where I work, I have to stay home for 14 days. About three days into my quarantine, I realized that the dog food for my mixed-breed dog “Corky” was running low. I don’t have any family nearby, and I don’t want to make my co-workers nervous by asking them to bring a bag of dog food over. I thought about ordering from that online pet food delivery service, but I think it will take too long. What can I do to tide Corky over? –- Sara J., White Plains, New York

DEAR SARAH: I feel for ya! My family and I are currently quarantined, too, and we’re finding online ordering of staples and pet food to be challenging. Take stock of exactly how much dry dog food you have left -- literally measure it out cup by cup into a container. Divide the total cups by the number of scoops per day that you give your dog. If the bag has less dry food than you’ll need for 11 more days, you can stretch it out and make sure Corky gets enough calories by combining his dry food with fresh food. Unseasoned, cooked rice and oatmeal, veggies like peas and carrots (but not onions, garlic, grapes or avocado), chicken, beef or salmon (unseasoned) are all safe and healthy options. Replace half to all the kibble per meal with a fresh alternative. Many communities are also spinning up “helping hand” services. Check the website of your local government, online community pages and even the local library’s site to find out if you can contact someone to drop off dog food.

“Hello, my name is Pudge! I came from a farm, and can you tell why I’m named Pudge from my furry face? I love to eat popcorn when I’m given treats. Every day at 5:10pm when Vince walks in, I stand on my wee little legs, anticipating him to walk by and pet me on my head. My favorite treats are carrots, apples, and romaine lettuce. I started off as a tiny guinea pig, and now I’ve grown into a football-sized piggy. I’m currently 5.5 years old, and Vince hopes I live as long as he does.” Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

BECOMING MORE ATTRACTIVE TO AUTO LENDERS It is common for consumers to spend months researching and saving for new vehicles. But many auto buyers do not put the same amount of effort into finding auto loans. That’s unfortunate, as Consumer Reports notes that those who do not have financing arranged before visiting a dealership may not get the best loan terms. Prior to buying a vehicle, drivers should give consideration to how they appear in the eyes of creditors. Few if any people pay for cars or trucks in full at the time of purchase. As a result, it’s key for buyers to make themselves as attractive as possible in lenders’ eyes. Improving credit score: Lenders use consumers’ credit scores to determine how likely they will be to honor the terms of a potential loan. Consumers’ FICO® scores are the type of credit score most often used to make lending decisions. FICO scores range between 300 and 850. The higher the score, the lower the risk to lenders. However, lenders do not necessarily use the same formula to assess risk. The first step potential borrowers should take is figuring out what their credit score is, and what information is on their credit report. For those who haven’t done so already, they can request a free copy of their credit reports from the three major credit monitoring bureaus. Once credit reports are obtained, consumers can work to correct any mistakes or inconsistencies. Some of these may be simple fixes, while others may take some effort. A 2012 study from the Federal Trade Commission found that one in five consumers had an error on at least one of their credit reports. Consumers also can improve their credit scores by doing the following: • Make payments on time, as payment history can have the greatest effect on a bad credit score, according to Credit.com. • Reduce debt by paying off balances on credit cards or other loans. • Obtain a mix of different credit sources, such as those in the form of credit cards, furniture financing, home ownership, and auto loans. This, too, can raise credit scores and make borrowers appear less risky. • Keep old credit accounts open, as they establish a strong credit history. Try not to open too many new accounts in a short period of time. Borrowers with strong credit will be attractive to lenders and will have more loan options at their disposal. AUTOMOTIVE

PICKUP TRUCKS REMAIN POPULAR Pickup trucks have long been among the most popular vehicles sold, and Statistica states the number of new pickup trucks sold in the United States continues to grow. Between 2015 and 2016, 2.7 million pickups were sold, and some 2.24 million of those were full-sized pickups. A recent study from the Automotive News Data Center found the big three pickup manufacturers, which include Ford, GM and Dodge, sell an average of 6,500 trucks every day in North America. While the popularity of pickup trucks may be evident to today’s motorists, just who is behind the wheels of those trucks may come as a surprise. According to a recent study from MaritzCX, covering the 2016 model year, more people from affluent families are opting for pickup trucks than economy cars. Other factors also may be contributing to the popularity of pickup trucks. A survey from Insure.com asked 2,000 licensed drivers ages 18 and up to rank the kinds of vehicles driven by the most attractive members of the opposite sex. The survey found that women prefer drivers of black pickups. Motorists who have never before driven pickup trucks but are mulling whether or not to join the truck-loving masses can consider a host of factors as they begin looking for trucks. Size: Pickups are larger than many other vehicles and tend to be heavier. As a result, when driving a pickup, leave more space for braking and do not tailgate. Blind spots: Because pickup trucks are longer than cars, they may have larger blind spots. Drivers should adjust the mirrors to diminish as much of their blind spots as possible. Also, give ample notice when changing lanes or making turns. Reverse: Upon purchasing a pickup, first-time truck owners may benefit from practicing driving in reverse so they can grow accustomed to doing so in a truck. Hauling gear: Be sure to properly restrain items that are hauled in the pickup truck bed, or invest in a bed cover so nothing is lost and safety is not compromised. Inclement weather driving: Pickup trucks have very little weight in the back when their beds are empty. This can cause trucks to fishtail on wet or snowy roads. Alleviate this by placing some sandbags in truck beds before driving in poor weather. AUTOMOTIVE

GVPENNYSAVER.COM/heroes Published May 8th • Deadline May 4th MEN CAN GET MANICURES FOR THEIR WEDDING DAYS, TOO A variety of wedding day cosmetic preparations are geared toward the brideto-be. Gentlemen generally limit their wedding pampering to a haircut and possibly a self-tanning product to have a golden glow in their wedding photos. As social norms continue to relax and guys grow more comfortable and confident taking care of their skin, hair and bodies, the list of services men undergo in advance of special occasions may widen. One service that many men have already embraced is the manicure. Manicures neaten the fingernails and treat the skin and cuticles of the fingers and can be just as beneficial for men as women. In fact, male-geared hand and foot grooming have already sprouted a niche market, including the Hammer & Nails Grooming for Guys franchise that was featured on the popular show “Shark Tank.” Nail technicians can help guys achieve a clean look and alert men to possible underlying health issues present on their hands and feet. According to Dr. David E. Bank, a clinical professor of dermatology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, technicians are trained to recognize possible fungus and other infections within the nails. Depending on his profession, a man’s hands may be on display and the appearance of those hands can help close deals or present a more professional look. Manicures can help men achieve that. They’re also ideal for special occasions like weddings, when guys want to be groomed to perfection. GQ magazine advises that the occasional professional manicure can offer nice, even nails without out-of-control cuticles - no polish or gel tips necessary. First-timers may be hesitant to give manicures a try. While salon services can differ, here’s what a typical manicure will entail. • Nails are cut and filed. • Hands will be soaked in warm water and/or oil to soften skin and cuticles. • Cuticles are pushed back or trimmed. • Moisturizer may be applied, and hands are given a brief massage. • Clear polish can be used if desired. However, a thorough buffing also can create a healthy shine to the nail. Men may want to visit nail salons during off-peak times if they are shy about requesting services. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Ascochyta leaf blight Lawns suffering from ascochyta leaf blight will become straw-colored. According to the lawn care and pesticide experts at Ortho®, when a lawn is affected by ascochyta leaf blight, its healthy grass blades will be mixed in with diseased grass blades. Most prevalent in the spring, this disease can affect grass at any time during the growing season. That’s because the ascochyta fungi invade leaf blades through wounds, such as those that can result from mowing. Ortho® notes that dull lawn mowers can contribute to the disease, which might disappear on its own and can even return after it’s seemingly been cured.

• Black walnut tree leaves or twigs: Leaves or twigs from black walnut release substances that might prove harmful to plants. • Coal or charcoal ash: Coal or ash from charcoal, such as the ash that builds up in the bottom of charcoal grills, may contain substances that are harmful. • Dairy products: When added to compost piles, dairy products, including butter, milk, sour cream, yogurt and eggs, can be malodorous and may attract pests, including rodents and flies. • Diseased or insect-ridden plants: The diseases and insects that plague plants may survive being transferred to compost piles. When the compost is ultimately distributed, these diseases and insects might then plague other plants. • Fats, grease, lard, or oils: Fats, grease, lard or oils also may attract rodents and flies, and that might be due to the unpleasant odors such substances can produce when added to compost piles. • Meat or fish bones and scraps: Like fats, grease, lard or oils, scraps from meat and fish and fish bones can smell unpleasant, potentially attracting rodents and flies. • Pet waste: Pet waste, including soiled cat litter, may contain parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens, and viruses that can be harmful. • Grass trimmings treated with chemical pesticides: Trimmings from grass that was treated with chemical pesticides can negate the effects of composting by killing beneficial organisms produced within compost piles or bins. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Trip to Supermarket Brings New Challenges It occurred to me the other day that I haven’t been eating right. It’s been difficult to find food in my stores, and it’s been difficult to work up the courage to go out, fearing I might get too close to someone who is sick. It also occurred to me that not eating right was bad for my immune system, should I need to fight off an illness. I began going out just before my nearest store closed at night, dashing in for one or two items, using the self-checkout, and fleeing out the door with my haul. That’s assuming my two items were actually on the shelves. But now, in the nick of time, two stores have restarted pickup service, after having cancelled it for over a month. I place the pickup order online, select a time slot two days in advance, and drive there to have my groceries put in the car. It works, even if there are a lot of substitutions of items and a few items out of stock. Here’s a thought: Do you have a supplemental Medicare policy or Medicare Advantage? Does it cover meal delivery service, perhaps Meals on Wheels? Some do. Coverage might only apply at certain times (if you’ve just had surgery or have a medical condition), but a lot of rules are changing now. It wouldn’t hurt to check your policy. Easy ways to volunteer… and give back to your community Millions of people across the globe volunteer every day. Without the selfless efforts of volunteers, many charities would be forced to cease operations. In fact, a 2017 study from the charitable community membership organization Independent Sector estimated that the labor provided by volunteers is worth roughly $193 billion per year in the United States alone. But volunteering can be as beneficial for volunteers as it can for the organizations they help. For example, the Mayo Clinic Health System notes that research has indicated volunteering leads to lower rates of depression while providing individuals with a sense of purpose. Volunteering can be especially beneficial for adults over age 60, with the MCHS noting that older volunteers experience greater increases in life satisfaction and greater positive changes in their perceived health as a result of volunteering. With so much to gain from volunteering, it’s no wonder that so many people across the globe volunteer. According to the United Nations Volunteers program, global estimates place the number of worldwide volunteers at 970 million. That’s nearly three times the population of the United States and more than 26 times the population of Canada in 2018. It’s never been easier to volunteer and begin helping your community. Adults and children who want to join the nearly one billion strong global volunteering community need not look far to get involved. The Corporation for National Community Service notes that the following are some easy ways to volunteer in your community. · Serve meals at a local shelter or community kitchen. · Sign up to work as a tutor or mentor with a local afterschool program. · Help adults find the right professional opportunities by hosting a résumé writing/review workshop and conducting practice interview sessions. · Work in conjuction with a local food pantry to organize a food donation drive. · Volunteer to help the environment by working with local, state, or national park services to beautify parks and/or a local community garden. · Work with a local emergency response organization to produce and distribute disaster-preparedness kits. · Help fellow community members save money by collecting and sharing information about free tax-preparation services. · Read to students or seniors- contact a local community or senior center. · Volunteer at an animal shelter.
When it comes to volunteering, the opportunities are as endless as the benefits of giving back to your community. GB19B381 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

2019 ANNUAL WATER QUALITY REPORT FOR THE VILLAGE OF LIMA AND WATER DISTRICTS ONE AND TWO (TOWN OF LIMA) New York State Water Supplier ID#: Village NY2501021 • Town NY2525000 Each year, water suppliers in New York State are required under New York State Department of Health regulations to distribute a report to their customers that summarizes water quality data for the previous calendar year. Since the Village and Town of Lima water districts purchase their water from the City of Rochester, it is our practice to meet this requirement through the distribution of the City of Rochester annual report. Due to additional treatment (disinfection) and other conditions associated with our system, it is expected that the results of regulated components will differ/vary from those recorded from the Cities of Rochester report. As a result, this report acts as a supplement to the report provided by the City of Rochester. Both Annual Water Quality Reports can be found online at https://villageoflima.us/water-quality-reports/
ARE THERE CONTAMINANTS IN OUR DRINKING WATER As the State regulations require, we routinely test your drinking water for numerous contaminants. These contaminants include: total coliform bacteria, lead and copper, and disinfection by-products. The table presented below depicts which compounds were detected in your drinking water. It should be noted that all drinking water, including bottled drinking water, might be reasonably expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791) or the Livingston County Department of Health (LCDOH) at 585-243-7280.
This report is intended to inform you (our customers) about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to standards set by local, state, and federal agencies. Our constant goal for the Village and Town of Lima is to provide our customers with an abundant supply of safe drinking water. We would like you to be aware of our continuing efforts to improve the quality and quantity of this valuable natural resource, which we supply to each and every customer. In 2019, the Village and Town of Lima did not violate a maximum contaminant level or any other water quality standard.
COLIFORM BACTERIA Coliform bacteria is a group of bacteria that are commonly used as a measure of the sanitary quality of drinking water. The presence of a specific type of coliform known as E.coli is considered to be a potentially serious compromise to the sanitary quality. Bacteria in drinking water not only originate at the source, but also can be introduced through a variety of local distribution conditions. For this reason, we are required to test a minimum of three times per month in the Village water system, and at least once per month in the Town water system. These samples are sent out to a New York State certified laboratory for analysis.
Where does our water come from? The Village of Lima began purchasing water from the City of Rochester in the fall of 1989. This water primarily comes from Hemlock Lake, although we do receive some Lake Ontario water mixed in on rare occasions. This is probably the result of the City closing valves due to a water main break or performing maintenance on their mains. We receive the City’s water from their system north of the Livingston County line on Route 15A. From there we pump the water south along Route 15A through the Town of Lima supplying the customers of Water District One along the way. At the time of pumping we add a small amount of disinfectant (sodium hypochlorite solution), and a phosphate (Calciquest) to combat rust deposits and build ups in the mains and valves. The chlorine and Calciquest residuals are monitored every day to insure proper dosage. Bacteria testing is performed monthly in the Town and the Village water supplies. In 2019, disinfection by-products were sampled quarterly in both the Village of Lima and in the Town of Lima water supply. FACTS AND FIGURES When pumping, water flows to the Village distribution system and replenishes the water tower located on Seneca Ave. This is done automatically to keep the tower as full as possible at all times. The purpose of the water tower, which holds 500,000 gallons, is (1) to have a two day supply in case there is a problem with our pumping system, (2) to keep a constant water pressure throughout the distribution system, and (3) to act as a reserve for fire protection. In 2019, we pumped on average about 176,000 gallons per day to meet our daily demand. The total amount of water produced in 2019 was 64,422,000 gallons. The amount of water delivered to Village customers was approximately 53.5 million gallons and the Town customers received approximately 10.5 million gallons. Of the 53.5 million gallons produced for the Village, we had an unaccounted total of approximately 8.5 million gallons (around 15.9% of the total amount produced). This water was used to flush mains, fight fires, as well as leakage and supply Village-owned properties. Our highest one-day total of water pumped into the distribution system was 349,000 gallons. The Village of Lima serves approximately 2,900 people through about 650 service connections. In 2019, water customers were charged on the average $72.00 for the first 10,000 gallons and $6.10 per additional 1,000 gallons of water. The City of Rochester’s conduit in North Bloomfield supplies the Town of Lima Water District One and Three. District Two is supplied by the City conduit at the county line on Route 15A where the chlorine residual is monitored monthly. The Town of Lima serves roughly 220 people through 117 service connections. As you will notice the City of Rochester has completed the bulk of this report (PAMPHLET) because they are our supplier. The City of Rochester is required to perform testing for contaminants in the water before it is delivered to Lima. Detected contaminants are listed in the enclosed City of Rochester report. A treatment technique trigger (TTT) occurs if two or more samples are positive for total coliform. An MCL violation occurs if E. coli is confirmed to be present. DISINFECTION BY-PRODUCTS Disinfection by-products (DBP’s) are organic chemical compounds that form when disinfectants (in our case, chlorine) react with certain types of organic compounds that are found naturally in the source water. DBP’s are regulated because at high levels they have been shown to cause adverse health effects over long periods of time. It is important to note that to insure sanitary quality; we are required to maintain a minimum level of chlorine residual throughout the distribution system. Since chlorine dissipates with time and distance, we must add additional chlorine to the water we purchase from the City of Rochester water supply in order to meet this requirement. The two main categories of regulated DBP’s are TOTAL TRIHALOMETHANES (TTHM) and five HALOACETIC ACIDS (HAA-5). Levels of these compounds in our water were below the established regulatory limits, also known as the maximum contaminant level (MCL).

Notes: 1. This represents the highest locational running annual average calculated from data collected. Although one TTHM sample exceeded 80 ug/l in the Village of Lima water supply, compliance is calculated based on the highest locational running annual average, which was below the MCL. 2. The level presented is the range of results for the samples collected in 2018 -2019 used to determine the running annual quarterly averages for 2019. 3. During 2018 the City of Rochester collected and analyzed 63 samples for lead and copper. The level included in the table represents the 90th percentile of the levels detected. Definitions: Action Level (AL): The concentration of copper or lead that when exceeded triggers actions to be taken by a water system. Micrograms per liter (ug/l): Corresponds to one part of liquid in one billion parts of liquid (parts per billion - ppb). Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible. Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL): The highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contamination. WHAT DOES THIS INFORMATION MEAN? As you can see by the table, our system had no violations. We have learned through our testing that some contaminants have been detected; however, these contaminants were detected below the level allowed by the State. LEAD We are required to present the following information on lead in drinking water. If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women, infants, and young children. It is possible that lead levels at your home may be higher than at other homes in the community as a result of materials used in your home’s plumbing. The Village and the Town of Lima are responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using it for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your drinking water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791) or at http://www.epa.gov/ safewater/lead. INFORMATION ON FLUORIDE ADDITION Fluoride is added to your water by the City of Rochester water treatment plant before it is delivered to us. The City of Rochester is one of the many New York water utilities providing drinking water with a controlled low level of fluoride for consumer dental health protection. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, fluoride is very effective in preventing cavities when present in drinking water at an optimal level of 0.7 mg/L. To ensure optimal dental protection, the State Department of Health requires that we monitor fluoride levels on a daily basis. In 2019, the fluoride levels in your water were within 0.1 mg/L of the CDC’s recommended optimal level greater than 99% of the time.
by Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other microbial pathogens are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). WHY SAVE WATER AND HOW TO AVOID WASTING IT? Although our system has an adequate amount of water to meet present and future demands, there are a number of reasons why it is important to conserve water: • Saving water saves energy and some of the costs associated with both of these necessities of life; • Saving water reduces the cost of energy required to pump water and the need to construct costly new wells, pumping systems and water towers; and • Saving water lessens the strain on the water system during a dry spell or drought, helping to avoid severe water use restrictions so that essential firefighting needs are met. You can play a role in conserving water by becoming conscious of the amount of water your household is using, and by looking for ways to use less whenever you can. It is not hard to conserve water. Conservation tips include: • Automatic dishwashers use 15 gallons for every cycle, regardless of how many dishes are loaded. So get a run for your money and load it to capacity. • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. • Check every faucet in your home for leaks. Just a slow drip can waste 15 to 20 gallons a day. Fix it and you can save almost 6,000 gallons per year. • Check your toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank, watch for a few minutes to see if the color shows up in the bowl. It is not uncommon to lose up to 100 gallons a day from one of these otherwise invisible toilet leaks. Fix it and you save more than 30,000 gallons a year. • Use your water meter to detect hidden leaks. Simply turn off all taps and water using appliances, then check the meter after 15 minutes. If it moved, you have a leak. SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS In 2020 we will be installing an interconnection waterline with the Town of Avon as a backup supply of Water to our water tower. In addition, we will also be beginning work on rehabbing our water tower. This will include painting and bringing it up to current code. CLOSING If you feel that there might be a problem with your water please call the Village office and we will arrange for a sample to be taken and tested. We regularly send our employees to State certified courses to educate them about managing our water system and how to provide you with the safest drinking water possible. Thank you for allowing us to continue to provide your family with quality drinking water this year. In order to maintain a safe and dependable water supply we sometimes need to make improvements that will benefit all of our customers. The costs of these improvements may be reflected in the rate structure. Rate adjustments may be necessary in order to address these improvements. If you should have any questions about this report or any water related topics please feel free to call Benjamin Luft, Village Superintendent of Public Works at (585) 624-4525 or Keith Arner, Town Superintendent of Public Works (585) 582-1443. IS WATER SYSTEM MEETING OTHER RULES THAT GOVERN OPERATIONS? Yes, the Village of Lima meets or exceeds all other rules that govern operations. DO I NEED TO TAKE SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS? Some people may be more vulnerable to disease causing microorganisms or pathogens in drinking water than the general population. Immunocompromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice from their health care provider about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection

Excerpt from
Elpis Israel by John Thomas Thus, the same gospel that was preached to Abraham, was preached also to Jews and Gentiles by the apostles after the ascension of Jesus to the right hand of power. There was, however, this difference; when it was preached to Abraham, and to the generation which perished in the Wilderness, it was altogether a matter of promise; but when preached by the apostles to the Roman nations some things connected with the promise were fulfilled; so that, the gospel of the kingdom as they preached it, was partly a matter of promise, partly a matter of history, and partly doctrinal. It was thus presented to mankind in a threefold point of view, which may be stated in this form: 1. Promises to be fulfilled; or things concerning the kingdom of God: 2. Promises fulfilled already; or, things concerning Jesus: 3. The doctrinal import of the fulfilled promises; or, things concerning his Name.

Grace Baptist of Dansville Offers Neighbors a Helping Hand and a Listening Ear BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
he COVID-19 pandemic and the social distancing and restrictions which have resulted from it have been difficult on nearly everyone. Many have felt isolated. Some have struggled to get their groceries and other necessities. Still others are struggling with the anxiety and stress of these uncertain times. With kids at home, some adults out of work, seniors and others living alone and other challenging situations, the congregation of Grace Baptist Church in Dansville has reached out to offer support. The idea started with member Dr. Jason Elwell, a pediatrician at Stony Brook Pediatrics. “For some time now, we have wanted to be a part of the community and reach out to our neighbors,”said Elwell. “We want folks to know we are here for them, and they are not going through this alone.” He approached Pastor David Theobald about leaving doorhangers in the Dansville and Wayland Villages to simply offer extra support, and the idea was wholeheartedly embraced. “We have a lot of members who just jumped at this opportunity to give their time and be of service,” added Elwell. These door hangers let neighbors know that Grace Baptist is offering to help by picking up groceries, lending a listening ear and simply being ready, willing and able to help in whatever capacity they can to alleviate the stress this pandemic is bringing to local seniors, individuals and families. “These are geared toward those who may feel the most isolated, the most shut in by this virus,” explained Elwell. “We are primarily offering two services to those who call: grocery and supplies pick up and pastors and counselors who are available to listen, advise and help.” “There are a lot of people who are very stressed and anxious right now,” shared Elwell. “Folks are just in the pressure cooker right now, so to speak, and there are certainly mental health outlets available. Using telemedicine has been a blessing and just shows the need that is out there. It is wonderful to know we have our people at Grace Baptist to help give them an outlet for stress, as well.”
which we check multiple times a day, and they will hear back from us within 24 hours.” While everything is someone’s idea, Elwell is clear that this outreach is the result of an active team looking for ways to help. Members like Rob Wilson, Matt and Stacy Gibson, Christa Barrows, Terry Fitzsimmons, Roberta McLean and Blair Powley are all eager to serve the families and individuals in these communities they love. “The whole church, like any church, was turned on its head in order Erin & Natalie E. with their mother, Darcey, to honor the restrictions on ready to hit the streets! meeting. This answered our question, which was, ‘We can’t do church like normal, but serving the Lord and being a follower of Christ isn’t about doing church, so how do we do that through all of this?’” Their answer may be hanging on your door handle. While offering support through door hangers is certainly the church’s most recent outreach, it is certainly not its only one. “We are hosting a family picnic and free chicken BBQ on June 24,” said Pastor David Theobald. “If the picnic can’t be held due to ban on public gatherings, it will be offered as drivethrough.” Other offerings include the Grace Baptist Youth Group for young people in 7th to 12th Grade to explore the Christian faith and is currently meeting via Zoom; summer programs for kids and teens with free supper and street hockey, basketball, soccer and beach volleyball; Biblical counseling for marriage, individuals and families; the Clean & Free program which offers Christ-centered hope and freedom for those struggling with addictions of any kind; a women’s ministry and a men’s ministry. “If you’re feeling like there is no hope and don’t know where to turn, know that you are not alone,” said Pastor Theobald. “One of our counselors or Pastors is available to help. Call the church: 585-335-6190 or email secretary@gracebcdansville.org.” For now, sermons are available on the church website: www.gracebcdansville.org and their Facebook page
Nathan, Emma and Maddie G. with their mother, Stacie who is also a counselor at Grace Baptist!
“People have had their world turned upside down, and if they simply need someone to speak with, we have people who are trained to do that,” said Elwell. “COVID-19 has been emotionally, psychologically and spiritually stressful. The members of Grace Baptist have been looking for a way to serve and are hoping to show the community that they love and care about them.” Of course, Grace Baptist had to receive permission from the town first. “We definitely cleared passing out door hangers with the town,” stated Elwell. “The town seemed very supportive and pleased that we are offering this support. We are not soliciting, simply offering a service and leaving that offer on people’s doors and following health guidelines with masks and gloves. If they would like to call and engage, it is entirely up to them. If they do call, they would be leaving a message on the church’s voicemail

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You still might have to deal with some lingering confusion that marked a recent workplace situation. But for the most part, you should now be well on your way to your next project. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new commitment might demand more time than you’d expected to have to give it. But rely on that special Bovine gift for patience, and stick with it. You’ll be glad you did. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re earning the admiration of a lot of people who like the way you handle yourself when your views are on the line. Even one or two of your detractors are being won over. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking your responsibilities seriously is what you do. But ease up on the pressure gauge, and make time for much needed R & R. Start by making this weekend a “just for fun” time zone. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some recently uncovered information might make a change of plans inevitable. If so, deal with it as quickly as possible, and then find out what went wrong and why. What you learn might surprise you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Aspects favor moving carefully and deliberately when making any significant changes. Could be there are more facts you need to know, which you might overlook if you rush things. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A problem neighbor might be looking to goad you into an action you don’t want to take. Ask someone you both respect if he or she would act as an impartial arbitrator for both of you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A recent workplace accomplishment hasn’t been overlooked by those who watch these things. Meanwhile, start making travel plans for that much-too-long-deferred trip with someone special. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Those money matters continue to move in your favor. Now would be a good time to start putting some money back into the house, both for esthetic as well as economic reasons. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A changing workplace environment can create job pressures. But, once again, follow the example of your birth sign and take things a step at a time, like the sure-footed Goat you are. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Cheer up. You could soon have the funds you need for your worthy project. Your generous gifts of time and effort are well known, and someone might decide it’s time to join with you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your inner scam-catcher is right on target, and you’re absolutely right to reject that “too good to be true” offer. Meanwhile, something positive should be making its way to you. BORN THIS WEEK: You are generous, and also sympathetic to people who find they need the help of others. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Researchers Working on Cure for Herpes --DEAR DR. ROACH: If a person has been exposed (verified by blood test) to herpes 1 and 2, can that person be a blood donor? Could a person catch herpes by sitting on a toilet seat that has been used by an infected person? Are scientists working on a cure for herpes? -- Anon. ANSWER: There remains a stigma against people with genital herpes, which is almost always caused by herpes simplex virus type 2. However, most people with genital herpes will not have major disruptions to their lives provided they take some precautions. First off, a person with herpes simplex virus type 1 (about half of the population between ages 18-49, higher in older people) or HSV-2 (about 12% of the same population) certainly can donate blood. Second, being exposed doesn’t guarantee infection. Third, blood testing is not perfect. Fourth, getting any kind of sexually transmitted infection from a toilet seat is very unlikely. Herpes viruses have a very difficult time getting through intact skin, which is why most exposures come through mucus membranes, especially of the genitals and mouth. There is a type of herpes (usually HSV-1, occasionally HSV-2) in wrestlers, called herpes gladiatorum or “mat herpes,” and it can be transmitted from person to person through skin-to-skin contact, especially if the skin is raw or chafed. Once a person has herpes of either variety, there is no cure. The virus stays in the nerve cells. There is extensive work being done both on preventing transmission and curing existing infections, but herpes viruses are very good at escaping the immune system. This makes herpes difficult to treat. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Should a person be concerned about serious side effects from long-term use of Claritin-D? My son has been using the medication continuously for about nine years. He has had allergy shots, which were minimally helpful. He cannot use nasal rinses or sprays because they cause nosebleeds. He does have some sleeping problems, but since he’s been taking Claritin-D for so long, it’s hard to tell if that medication is the cause. -- M.S. ANSWER: Claritin-D is a combination of the antihistamine loratadine and the decongestant pseudoephedrine. Loratadine is considered safe in most people. Pseudoephedrine is safe for younger people, but it can raise blood pressure and pulse, and in older men, can cause urinary symptoms. He might try plain Claritin, which is just the loratadine, and save the Claritin-D for his worst days. Less pseudoephedrine is probably better. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your comments to I.T. with interest, as I had my gallbladder removed way back in 1968. I feel you left out a side effect that follows the procedure for many patients: the “dump” syndrome, or diarrhea. This result has plagued me and several others for years. I found some relief by taking cholestyramine before eating. -- J.C. ANSWER: That’s a very good point, and one I did not highlight. “Dumping syndrome” refers to bile being delivered to the intestine suddenly, causing diarrhea. It isn’t common, fortunately, and I, too, have found that cholestyramine can be very effective, in addition to eating smaller, more-frequent meals. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Local vendors will be familiar with the area and possibly even the location where the wedding will be held. That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with non-local vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have preexisting relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding day operations go smoothly.

LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME
Calm
(NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise. Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased. Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world.
Remain calm and clearheaded whether you are managing your portfolio or purchasing groceries. The stock market always recovers, and our country’s supply of vital goods is strong. Panic selling and panic buying are not in the best interests of you or your community.
Support Local businesses need your support more than ever to keep local communities strong. Order takeout from local restaurants, buy goods from local businesses online or purchase gift cards to them and don’t forget to pay your gym membership.
The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s:
There is no better time to put “We local business” into action! Share this message and spread some hope!
• Easily cut • Noncombustible, with a melting point of approximately 2,150° F • Fire resistant • Not likely to rot or promote the growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. For great soundproofing results, you can install the stone wool insulation in your home theater, basement, home office, laundry room, furnace room and even the washrooms. Its high-density and unique fiber structure reduces noise traveling from one room to another. Learn More: For further facts, visit www.rockwool.com/products/safensound. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

By JoAnn Derson * “I use curbside pickup for my groceries these days. I keep two large laundry baskets in the hatchback of my vehicle. Any bags go in the baskets, so it’s easy to transport them into the house and keep contact to a minimum. When I’m done unloading and wiping down, I can spray out the laundry baskets and let them dry in the sun for next time. Can’t be too careful.” -- T.E. in Virginia * “Stay ahead of the drain: Pour a tea kettle of boiling water down the drain once a month, or if you notice the drain slowing. The hot water can break up material collecting inside the drain. Half a cup of baking soda added to the water will absorb any odors that are building.” -- Colepepper Plumbing in California * “I color code my plants by their light needs. The closer the pot color is to red, the more light it needs. For instance, my lavender is in a red pot -full sun. I have a nice potted citronella that likes part sun, so it’s in a lime-colored pot (yellow-green) and my indoor pots are plum. I have a lovely rainbow of plants!” -- Y.S. in Arizona * A hanging shoe rack is a handy place to keep office supplies and school supplies for the whole family. Pencils, markers, assignment cards, and even papers. You can give each person a row, or label the pockets. * There’s a lot of decluttering going on across the country right now. Here’s a pro tip: For seasonal items, if you didn’t wear it last season, consider selling or donating. Same applies if it’s a specialty item (skiwear, hiking boots, formalwear) that hasn’t been used for more than two years. Many people keep items that are on the expensive side, even though season after season goes by without the item being used. If you rationalize keeping the scuba suit, plan a scuba trip!

I would like to thank my neighbors, the Henslers, for making a beautiful mask for me to wear. I appreciate your kindness and thoughtfulness. - JM Harris Kudos to the wonderful staff at the Teresa House for keeping the Comfort Home opened during this pandemic. The 2 residents are very fortunate to have such a caring group of Volunteers and Nurses who continue to shower them with love and attention. Thank you for your kindness. It shows in everything you do. Stay safe, stay well, and stay hopeful.
I would like to know why people who are nonessential workers are still going to work and possibly exposing their family members and other people? I understand people must work, but if we do not do our part, we will never get out from under this. Please let us do our part stay home, so I do not lose a family member. Thank you. I do not understand why some people must sit in their apartments and watch the coming and going of their neighbors or take it upon themselves to play parking lot police. I think that there are some people who are not meant for complex living. Just because they are a frustrated, miserably old woman. Please do not take it out on your neighbors. I am sad that our Village DPW does not fill potholes. They are not plowing snow nor working in parks nor tree trimming. The least they could do is fill the potholes. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

This is to the police officers who read the paper. I understand you need to concentrate resources in larger areas like the cities, but on the country roads, people are literally (and I am not exaggerating) going 100 mph down the roads. I was driving going 60 mph and got passed by two people going over 80 mph at least. This happens every day now because they think they will not get caught, and I, for one, am sick of hearing the rev of engines going up and down my road and the main road.
GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
With a son in a group home and other relatives in rehab and senior facilities, we so appreciate those who care for our dear ones, keeping them safe and healthy. We thank those who go above and beyond normal duties to keep our son in a Heritage Christian Home, actively engaged in jobs and artwork to keep him stimulated in an at-home environment, along with photos and reports on his well-being. A million thanks to our direct care pros who are on the front lines like other essential services such as groceries, pharmacies, and transportation as well as to our older son who, among millions, deliver tons of stuff to our homes and businesses.
A big and grateful thank you to the man who was in front of me at the Tim Hortons in Batavia on Lewiston Rd. on April 11th, 2020. He paid for my bill. I was there picking up gift certificates for my family for Easter. Little did he know he not only paid for me but for my family. So altogether you paid for eight grateful people. I know that God will bless you for your kindness, and I cannot say thank you enough. Stay safe and healthy and thank you again.
This needs to be addressed. To all the people ignoring the rules and going out, what are you trying to prove? Good for you; you are risking others catching the virus. People pack into the markets and ignore the six-foot rule as well. I am disgusted that you who still go out to gatherings publicly brag in line for others to hear how ‘cool and defiant’ you are being. I literally heard a woman scoff and say, “Well, I’m not staying home.” Guess what? You and the people like you are the reason we need alerts to our phone telling us to stay in. Thanks for lessening the chances of spreading it. Stay home. As the ad says, “Be apart now so we can be together later.”
Responding to Mind your Business: I agree with your post. It does not matter where some live, whether it be in a condo, or a complex apartment, or in a house. Some people are just a piece of work. They think they own the neighborhood. They monitor everything...and everyone. It is truly sad that they do not have a life that they resort to being like they are. They become the town criers as it were. Since they have no friends or family that really want anything to do with them, they take on the job of poking their noses in everybody else’s business. That makes them think that they are important, when in actuality, no one wants to be around them, nor do they respect them. Every neighborhood has someone like that, I guess. As hard as it may be, do not let it bother you. They love it when it does. Stay well.
Regarding Painted Rocks. I saw one of them the other day, and it was so adorable! But from more than 10 feet away, it does look like another piece of trash. I agree that, at the park while enjoying nature, it is nice to see nature and not what looks like trash on the ground, even if it is cute close up.

Thank You Bruce McFadden April 13, 2020
Dixie L. LaPoma February 24, 1943 – April 7, 2020
The family of Dixie LaPoma would like to express our thanks for all of the cards, food and flowers after the passing of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother.
AVON: April 13, 2020, unexpectedly at the age of 65. Bruce is survived by his wife of 42 years, Terrie (Slocume); children, Tracy (Stephanie) Decker of Avon, Chad (Brianne) McFadden of Victor, Krystal (Stephen) Vukosic of Avon, Alan (Heather) McFadden of N. Chili, and Travis (Stephanie) McFadden of Avon; grandchildren, Kyler (Corey), Payton (Zach), Trey, Jayden, Allison, Mikayla, Dylan, Timothy, Katelynn, Landon, and soon to arrive great-grandchild, Levi; brothers, Michael (Eileen), Rick (Eileen); sisters, Kathy (Pete), Trish (Mart), Meg (Matt), Heather (Bob); sister-inlaw, Sue; many nieces, nephews, loving family members and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Chuck and Bea, and brothers Don and Charlie. Those who knew Bruce knew him with a smile on his face and as being the life of the party. Throwing of rolls, mooning people and laughter was the norm at any gathering he was at. Bruce had an ability to make people feel welcomed and part of the family, even if he had only known you for minutes. His love for his grandchildren was apparent by the way he talked about them to anyone and everyone. Bruce was a hard worker from a young age into retirement. He was a natural people person which made him the perfect “president” of the neighborhood watch, which was just him sitting on his porch, in his chair, and knowing the comings and goings of the street. He didn’t brag about much, with the exception of how clean his vehicles were, even after he helped you clean yours. Boating became an addiction to him later in life and he always looked forward to getting out on the lake. He was always the first one in the water regardless of how cold it was.
Special thanks to Mary Rizzo and Pat Dillon for all the meals, love and support during Dixie’s illness. We don’t know what we would have done without you. It meant so much. Heartfelt gratitude also to Father Michael Fowler of St. Agnes Church and Jim Murray at Stephenson-Dougherty Funeral Home for handling the arrangements and to Livingston County Hospice for all the care given to Dixie in her final days. And finally to Tops of Avon for providing a delicious meal complete with Mom’s favorite cookies! She definitely would have approved. She will be deeply missed and always in our hearts.
The family of Dixie LaPoma
By reading the scriptures I am so renewed that all nature seems renewed around me and with me. The sky seems to be a pure, a cooler blue, the trees a deeper green. The whole world is charged with the glory of God and I feel fire and music under my feet. ~Thomas Merton
Bruce’s unexpected passing is felt by many people and to say he will be missed is a gross understatement. Due to the current state of restrictions, A “McFadden Party” will be scheduled at a later time. Please share your memories of Bruce with us below. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Chuck McFadden Student Service Award. INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.

Call 585-591-1624 BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.
