When it comes to effortless pool care, BioGuard’s comprehensive pool care systems are simply the best. That’s because each system is broken down into three easy-to-follow steps - starting with Step 1: adding a sanitizer (our best products feature patented SilkGuard® Technology) to quickly kill bacteria followed by Step 2: using the recommended shock to destroy contaminants and Step 3: adding an algicide to stop algae before it starts. Simple, huh? Visit us today to learn more on the simplicity of following a BioGuard system.

Spray an 8-inch by 8-inch baking pan with nonstick spray. Place the cocoa mix and 1 tablespoon chocolate chips in a glass. Add 1⁄4 cup very hot water, and stir until mostly dissolved. Add 1⁄3 cup cold water. In a large bowl, combine the cake mixes, egg substitute, food coloring, and salt. Add cocoa mixture, and whisk until smooth. Pour batter into the baking pan, and sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon chocolate chips. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean, 26 to 28 minutes. In another medium bowl, combine pudding mix with Splenda. Add vanilla extract and 1⁄4 cup cold water, and vigorously stir until mostly smooth and slightly thickened. Add cream cheese and 1 cup Cool Whip, and stir until uniform. Cover and refrigerate. Cut cake into 1-inch cubes. In a large glass bowl or trifle dish, evenly layer half of the cubed cake. Spread all of the pudding mixture over the cake layer. Evenly top with half of the strawberries. Continue layering with remaining cubed cake, Cool Whip and strawberries.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “I found a small waste basket that fits right between the wall and my dryer. There’s a gap that’s about 8 inches wide. The lip of the basket keeps it from sliding down to the floor, so it’s easy to clean out the lint trap and put the waste in the basket. Also, I used a strip of hook-and-loop tape to attach a tissue holder box vertically to the wall. I stick a box of fabric softener sheets in it, and they, too, are right where I need them.” -- T.K. in Nevada * “To keep the kitchen garbage can from smelling, I put spoiled food items in a bread bag, and then put it in the freezer until it’s time for the garbage collector. I also have a friend with a compost bin, and I am doing the same with vegetables, fruit and peelings. I plan to bring the whole mess when I get to visit. The compost bin won’t care if it’s been defrosted!” -- E.L. in Virginia * “Place recipes inside of a plastic bag so that they can be handled while cooking, but not dirtied. This is especially necessary with heirloom recipes. For myself, I have made photocopies of recipes handed down from my grandmother, so the originals are safe in the cookbook. I like handwritten recipe cards because it’s like the writer is there with you.” -- T. in Ohio

* Clogged drain? Don’t use chemicals. “If you do encounter a full clog, try hot water and baking soda first. If that doesn’t work, try a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Avoid plumbing snakes, which can scratch the interior of your pipes, and commercial chemical cleaners, which are caustic and a health hazard, even when used according to instructions.” -- Colepepper Plumbing in California * To keep dirt from sticking to your dustpan, spray it lightly with furniture polish. Buff with a cloth so that it’s not wet. Floor dirt will slide right off. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BENEFITS OF CHOOSING SOLAR ENERGY Property value: Whether they plan to do so in the near or distant future, homeowners with an eye on selling their homes may be interested to learn that a recent study from the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab found that solar panels can significantly increase property value. The study analyzed the sales of more than 20,000 homes in California, Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, New York and Pennsylvania, suggesting the desire for solar energy among prospective buyers is not exclusive to a particular region of the country. 533-1396 I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

However, the U.S. Geological Survey estimates that a single home with three leaky faucets that each produce one drip per minute will waste 104 gallons of water per year from these faucets alone. This waste is easily prevented by simply fixing leaky faucets the moment drips are noticed.

www.valleyasphaltandsealinginc.com DRAFTY WINDOWS ARE AN ISSUE Drafty windows make homes less comfortable by allowing cold air in during the winter and warm air in when temperatures rise. But comfort is not the only concern associated with leaky windows, as such fixtures also can have a negative impact on the environment. Leaky windows require heating and cooling systems to work harder to keep home interiors comfortable during times of the year when temperatures can be extreme. In the dead of winter, a leaky window will force a home’s inhabitants to turn up the thermostat, which only increases energy consumption and energy bills. The same scenario plays out in summer, when leaky windows allow hot air in, leading homeowners to lower the temperature of air conditioning units so everyone inside is cool and comfortable.

After a long season of use, fireplaces need to be cleaned. Many homeowners think this is a job that can be put off until the fall, but spring is an ideal season to have the chimney and flue cleaned and inspected. One reason to include scrubbing the chimney as part of spring cleaning is to cut down on odor. After using a fireplace, a buildup of creosote forms in the chimney. As the weather gets warmer, creosote deposits can start to smell sour and that odor will seep into the home. In addition, moisture can mix with the creosote and start to degrade the flue liner, necessitating costly repairs. The sooner a chimney and flue are cleaned the better. A chimney sweep can do a thorough job of scrubbing down the chimney and fireplace and ensuring that everything will be in working order come next season.

PROTECT YOUR FLOORS A way to prolong the life of flooring is to protect it from wear and tear. Removing shoes before walking indoors can help. Avoid high heels and athletic cleats, which can create divots in hardwood and some other types of flooring. Place indoor and outdoor mats at the entrances of the home to catch any dirt that would be ground into the flooring. Furniture protectors will help prevent scratches from furniture feet while moving pieces around a room. Remember to wipe up spills when they occur to prevent the formation of stains.

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.
Gerald Edward Meade “Jerry” May 4, 2020 Rochester, NY: Gerald Edward Meade, “Jerry” (Lt. Col US Army, retired) departed this life on May 4, 2020. Born 1929 in Rochester, NY. Sendel of Geneseo; sisters, Margaret “Peggy” Stegg, Marlene Miller; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Roy was predeceased by his brother, Robert Englert; sister, Jean Blaschek. Roy was a career military veteran who served in the Army, Marines, and retired out of the Air Force at the rank of Master Sergeant. Roy served in the post-World War II Era and fought in the Korean War. After his military career Roy went to work for Baush and Lomb in management for 18 years. Roy enjoyed every day of his retirement which involved many hobbies, such as charter fishing trips and hunting with his sons Roy Jr, Cliff and David; Visiting his princess and only daughter Sandy; Running of a campground with his wife; Seasonal trips to the “Berry Patch” from Riverview campground, road trips with his grandchildren to Florida and back; Watching every Space Shuttle launch, and traveling up and down the east coast to countless Air Shows with his grandson. Love you, Jean and all of your Children & Grandchildren THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning ensures your wishes are honored. Men and women who formalize their funeral plans will ensure their wishes are honored. That can give men and women peace of mind and will provide peace of mind to the loved ones they leave behind, who can attend funeral services knowing those services are being conducted in adherence to their loved one’s wishes. Even men and women who discuss their wishes for their funerals with loved ones may not have those wishes honored if they are not put in writing.

A SENSE OF PERMANENCE Cremation may reduce a body to ashes, but the place where those ashes are stored need not be any less physically enduring that a gravesite with a tombstone. While some people may assume that “cremains” are scattered to the wind or deposited in an urn for safekeeping at home, they may treated in the same ways that a body can. Not only can cremains be buried in a cemetery, but they can also be committed to a “cremation niche.” Whether it is located outdoors or as part of an indoor mausoleum, a “columbarium” has small spaces, called “niches,” for placing cremated remains in urns or other approved containers. Most cremation niches are made of marble or premium granite. These days, many people live far from their family roots and cremation provides more flexibility. Cremated remains can be stored in an urn and displayed on a shelf or mantle at home, scattered on land, floated on water, placed in a columbarium, buried in a plot, or entombed in a crypt. You can carry cremated remains with you if you are moving elsewhere but this is not possible in case of burial. If you would like to learn more about the funeral services KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME offers, please call us today at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Death doesn’t exist. SUNY Geneseo’s President Battles Reflects on Campus Life BY AMANDA DUDEK
C
hanges swept across the nation when COVID-19 struck earlier this year, leaving virtually no institution or individual untouched and sending nearly all of them virtual. Nowhere were these changes felt more than in our education system, including our colleges. At our own SUNY Geneseo, President Denise Battles, Ph.D. has led faculty, staff and students as they have met each new challenge. “At SUNY Geneseo, we have prioritized the health and safety of our campus community,” said Battles. “We announced a shift to remote learning on March 11, prior to the start of our campus’s spring break, and continued remote learning through the rest of our academic year, with most of our students, faculty and staff continuing their studies or work off-campus.” The change from in-person classes to remote learning had arisen very quickly and with little warning, but both students and educators rose to this challenge. “I have been extremely proud of the dedication and resilience of the members of our campus community who have worked hard to ensure that we continue to deliver an exceptional educational experience to our students,” Battles praised. “I am no less proud of our students, who have been remarkably flexible in adapting to our changed circumstances.” Even in these difficult circumstances, the college has adapted to support its students. “Not all of our residents could readily return to their homes mid-semester for a variety of valid reasons,” Battles explained, referring to those students who remained in its residence halls through the end of the academic year. “The large majority of students are now learning at a distance. While there are too many wonderful adaptation examples to list, some of them include the creation of ‘lab packs’ for science students, our annual Relay for Life fundraiser which raised nearly $100,000 for the American Cancer Society through its virtual event and Virtual GREAT Day, our annual celebration of student research, scholarship and creative activity.”
SUNY Geneseo students being greeted by the SUNY Geneseo mascot: Victor E. Knight! Some events, however, did not go digital. One of them was commencement. “While we have organized a virtual Senior Send-Off for our graduates and their loved ones, we postponed the in-person commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2020,” said Battles. “Following student consultation and considering the best approach for the health and safety of all, we have announced that we will hold our in-person celebration in May 2021, coinciding with Geneseo’s sesquicentennial year. That 150th anniversary of our College’s founding should make that event all the more meaningful.” SUNY Geneseo has not forgotten its community during this time either. As one of the top-ranked institutions across the nation for contributions to the public good, the college has found ways to continue its public service and community engagement, even while operating remotely. “Our Office of Student Volunteerism and Community Engagement has provided continuing opportunities for civic engagement,” shared Battles. “We continued our Geneseo Cares Day of Service and our Adopt-ABusiness program, for example, which has found an even greater purpose as merchants who have traditionally relied on in-person sales and services

have had to shift swiftly to technology-focused efforts.” The college also donated PPE to the surrounding county early in the crisis. Local communities, friends and family, which have always been extraordinarily supportive of SUNY Geneseo and its students, now have another opportunity to support students affected by this crisis. “The pandemic’s impacts are broad, and many of our students are dealing with uncertainties associated with lost employment or health Dr. Denise A. Battles, issues, whether personal or President of SUNY Geneseo among their families,” affirmed Battles. “Our campus, like many others, has established a new fund to which anyone can contribute to support these students. Referencing our College’s mascot, it’s called the “One Knight Student Aid Fund” and it is easily located on our website: https://www.geneseo. edu/support/geneseo-foundation.” As the pandemic progresses, what classes will look like at SUNY Geneseo this fall remains unclear. “We will, of course, operate according to federal and state directives that are in place at that time,” assured Battles. “While reconvening on our beautiful campus is our goal and intention, we will continue to prioritize health and safety and are planning for a variety of contingencies in case we need to pivot.” Meanwhile, SUNY Geneseo will continue to provide meaningful learning opportunities. “The college has recently launched an exciting opportunity for engagement with the broader community, taking advantage of technology to support remote learning,” Battles shared. “We are offering continuing education opportunities through three online courses this summer: Programming in R for Data Analysis, Equity-Minded Search Practices, and Dante for Now. I encourage interested readers to check them out at https://www.geneseo.edu/continuing-education.” Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com: •

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Getting Around Canceled Events Life might be slowly getting back to normal, but a number of things we anticipated won’t be happening now. The expired prescription-drug drop off: Once a year in my area, the drug store turns its parking lot over to an organization that collects and destroys old drugs. Not this year; it’s already been canceled. A thought: Some local police departments have a collection bin in their facility, usually in the lobby. Call to inquire if your police department has one, or if they’re planning a drug event of their own. The shredding events: Twice a year the bank and the senior center hire a company to bring in their shredding truck and accept all paper items to be shredded: old tax records, bills, documents with personal information on them. This is a very valuable service, and unfortunately, around here those have been canceled. One way to get around this is to have your own shredder. They can be ordered online, typically for less than $40. Learn the difference between strip cut, cross cut and confetti cut. Pictures can be deceptive, so read the specs for the machine. Some will only shred small receipts. Plays and dinners: Once you hear that an event you’d paid for is being canceled, start right away to get your money back. The group might ask that you let them keep your money for their expenses, saying you can claim it as a donation on your taxes. You might consider it, but don’t assume you can get a credit for the same event next year. Better to get your money in hand now. There are so many other events -- senior games and fitness clinics, summer banquet and dance, the legal help event, monthly tech help -- all likely canceled for the foreseeable future. Tip: Call the organization anyway. They might have found a way to safely hold their events.

Build an effective (and budget-friendly)
home gym
Physical fitness is important. Exercise guidelines depend on the individual, but the American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week. That amount may need to be increased to meet specific goals, such as weight loss. In order to meet their fitness goals, many people invest in home gyms. Home gyms can be a convenient way to maximize physical activity and help people maintain muscle mass. According to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, a Harvard-affiliated medical center, staying fit can improve physical strength, reduce seniors' fear of falls, increase confidence, and improve sleep. When setting up a home gym, people may be tempted to invest a fortune into their equipment. But such investments aren't entirely necessary. Here are some ways to have a functional, budget-friendly workout space in your home. · Invest in elastic resistance bands. Invest in lightweight elasticbands. According to a study published in 2018 in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine, such bands can improve strength just as effectively as many weight machines commonly found in gyms. Resistance bands don't take up much space and can be tucked out of sight when not in use. · Dedicate a workout space. Many people find that areas away from the bustle of the household are great spaces to devote to home gyms. Include a full-length mirror that lets you make sure you're performing exercises correctly and invest in a stereo to pump in inspirational music. The fewer the distractions, the more likely you will commit to your exercise regimen. · Invest in a set of dumbbells. Adjustable dumbbells or a few of various weights are a good investment. Dumbbells are compact and can be used to perform a variety of strength-training exercises. Begin with light weights and work your way up to reduce your risk of injury. · Try stability balls. Stability balls are used to perform various core exercises, according to Harvard Medical School. The body's core can be strengthened to improve balance, reduce back pain and more. Stability balls also can be used to perform abdominal crunches, squats, hamstring curls, and body bridges. Balls also can double as a bench when working with dumbbells. · Don't forget about cardio. Elliptical machines, stationary bikes and treadmills are effective, but there are other ways to get your daily dose of cardiovascular exercise. Lateral shuffles between two points on a gym floor, or setting up a circuit of jumping jacks or skipping rope can keep your heart rate up and improve health.

Excerpt from
Elpis Israel by John Thomas To understand the relations of things, it must be known that the gospel stands related to Abraham’s descendants before the preaching of John the Baptist; to Israel from John to the day of Pentecost; from this epoch until the calling of the Gentiles; and then to the Gentiles at large. “The law and the prophets were until John, then the kingdom of God was proclaimed” to Israel by John, Jesus, the seventy, and the twelve. There was “a mystery,” however, connected with the gospel which was not manifested in the proclamation of it before the day of Pentecost. The people were taught in parables, but the apostles were favored with an interpretation of them in private: for; said Jesus to them, “to you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God, but to them it is not given” (Mk. 4:2; Matt. 13:11). Referring to this, Paul says, “my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began. But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets made known to all nations for the obedience of faith” (Rom. 16:25-26). “Pray for me,” says he, “that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in bonds” (Eph. 6:19). Again, ”by revelation God hath made known unto me, Paul, the mystery, which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto the holy apostles and prophets by the spirit; that the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ by the gospel. To me was given to make all men see what is the FELLOWSHIP of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world (from the beginning of the ages) hath been hid in God, by whom all things were created for Jesus Christ. To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in the high places might be made known through the church the multifarious wisdom of God” (Eph. 3:3-10). months, my ear canals have been very itchy. Also, my wife was constantly cleaning earwax out of my ears. Now for some reason I no longer produce earwax, but my ears itch a lot. Do you have any idea what may be causing this? How do I stop the itching? I have tried olive oil. It seems to work but not really that well. A doctor looked in my ear and said the ear canals look fine. -- R.K. ANSWER: Itching in the ear canals is common, but usually an exam is able to lead the examiner to at least suspect a diagnosis. An incipient ear infection is one common reason, but your issue has been going on for months. Skin conditions that itch, such as eczema, is another common one. The doctor might have seen this, but sometimes the findings are subtle. Just having dry skin is a common cause, especially in winter, and olive oil is one treatment, but if it isn’t working it’s time to stop. I often see people make their problem worse by using inappropriate therapies, especially peroxide, and also by putting objects in the ear to scratch it. This can lead to abrasions, lacerations and worse that I won’t horrify you with. I would get the ear looked at again, and if there still is nothing to see, one treatment is a mild prescription steroid drop for a period of time. Your regular doctor or an ear/nose/throat specialist would be a good choice. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Are net carbs really a thing? I understand low impact on blood sugar, but not measuring net carbs. -- H.C. ANSWER: The “net carbs” number is normally calculated by taking the grams of total carbohydrates and subtracting the grams of fiber and sugar alcohols. It’s an attempt to look at the effect on blood sugar, and it has modest informational benefit. It can be misleading, because some sugar alcohols (ending in “-ol,” like maltitol and xylitol) do increase blood sugar somewhat, though not as much as sugars (which end in “-ose,” like glucose and sucrose). I don’t recommend using the term “net carbs.” I think it’s more important to look at ingredients. Avoid large amounts of added sugar and processed starches. Make sure the carbohydrates you take in come mostly from vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains. These are the foundations of a healthy diet, and you don’t need to count numbers. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently was diagnosed with kidney disease and was advised to drink eight glasses of water daily. I can only get down three glasses. Is it OK to drink tea instead? Would vitamins help? -- E.K. ANSWER: From the standpoint of your kidneys, tea and coffee count as water. Having adequate fluid intake is important for your kidneys, but most people who aren’t exercising or living in hot or dry environments don’t need eight full glasses a day. Vitamins are not necessary for kidney health; however, people with very advanced kidney disease often need a special form of vitamin D called calcitriol. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might not like some people’s idea of a surprise. But you could be in for a pleasant shock when someone finally sends a reply to a request you made so long ago that you almost forgot about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a time to expect the unexpected. So don’t be surprised if a decision that just recently seemed final suddenly opens up and leaves you with another chance to make an important choice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking a different tack on a work project might rankle some colleagues. But the positive results of your innovative course soon speak for themselves. Celebrate by doing something fun this weekend. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Meeting new associates can be awkward, even if you’re in a high positive phase right now. Best advice: Make them feel comfortable, and you’ll soon forget your own discomfort. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s a good time for you social Lions to blow-dry your manes, polish your claws and look like the Fabulous Felines you are as you make new friends and influence the influential. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Expectations run especially high this week, and you should feel confident in your abilities to take advantage of what might be offered. A colleague has some advice you might find helpful. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A recent flurry of activity leaves you in need of a little breathing space, and you’d be wise to take it. Close family members should have an explanation about an emergency situation that just passed. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An insensitive act makes a difficult situation more so. But try not to waste either your physical or emotional energies in anger. Move on and let others fill the clod in on the facts of life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It’s a good time to look into that training program or college course you’ve been considering. You might have a good place to use those sharpened skills sooner rather than later. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Education dominates much of your aspect during this week. You might want to start checking out those summer session courses that could help advance your career plans. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Progress often comes in fits and starts. But at least you’re moving straight ahead with no backsliding. You should soon be able to pick up the pace and reach your goals in due time. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be wary of a deal that gives confusing answers to your questions. Remember: It’s always risky swimming in unknown waters, so you need all the help you can get to stay on course. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of bringing people together and creating close friendships wherever you go. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I spend quite a bit of money each year on my two Corgis: veterinary care, grooming, toys and a pet sitter. They’re also registered as therapy pets -- so they earn their keep! With all that I spend, why can’t I write off pet care on my taxes? -Harold in Palo Alto, California DEAR HAROLD: I hear you! Americans spent almost $96 billion on their pets in 2019, over $5 billion more than they did in 2018. But almost none of that can be deducted from federal taxes. Here’s what you can’t deduct: medical expenses, training or maintenance (like grooming and pet sitters). Companion or comfort animals and many therapy pets aren’t eligible for tax deductions. Here are the few deductions that are possible: * If you have a service animal -- one that is trained to assist those with specific medical conditions, such as a guide dog for the blind or a service dog that assists those with mobility or neurological issues -- the costs of buying, training and maintaining that service animal may be deductible. * If an animal is employed at your business -- such as a guard dog or the star of your Instagram empire -- you may be able to take a deduction on your business taxes. But be prepared to explain how the pet is essential to your business. * If you donate money or goods to a registered nonprofit animal shelter or animal advocacy group, this counts as a charitable deduction. Make sure to get a receipt. * Finally, you can set up a trust fund to care for your pets should they outlive you. Talk to an estate attorney about this option and any potential tax benefits.

I had two boxes to mail out. The post office clerk said one package was going to cost me $28 to mail. I told the clerk I cannot afford it. Out from the line of people waiting, a beautiful young girl said, “I will pay for that.” I am 78 years old and so surprised that a stranger would do this for me. The clerk rechecked the package weight, and it only came to $10 plus change. So, this girl, who worked at Wendy’s a few doors down, paid for my package. Thank you, young lady. You made my day! Thanks for your kindness to an old lady.

How refreshing to hear that someone has the same sentiments as I do. I enjoyed the post entitled, “Rippled Affect.” Poison is a terrible way to kill a rodent, or anything else for that matter. And yes, it does have a rippling affect. Do not get me wrong; I do not like mice, but when one makes it into my house, we trap them alive and then release them. I have also used natural remedies as well. Mint is something mice do not like. I went walking on Saturday, May 2, 2020 around noon. There were many people on bikes and walking or running. It was a beautiful day. Many of those people were not wearing masks. I know that every person is required to wear a mask now. Please be considerate of your fellow humans and wear your masks. I would like to comment on the person who wrote in about the nosy, old lady parking lot police. I think every place has one or two. I don’t know what they get over trying to make others as miserable as they are. They should just try to mind their own business and get along with people. I think they would be much happier women.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB
GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.
Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
