Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

LAWNS BENEFIT FROM AERATION

585-317-5281

Compacted soil can have a dramatic effect on grass. Compacted soil blocks oxygen, water and nutrients from reaching the root systems of the turf. That creates a lawn with weak roots, which make grass more vulnerable to disease and compromising its ability to withstand harsh weather, such as summer heat. The buildup of thatch, which is a matted layer of grass clippings and other organic debris that collects on the top of the soil, is one indicator that a lawn could benefit from aeration, a process in which the surface of the lawn is perforated to break up compacted soil and allow oxygen, water and nutrients to reach root systems. Other signs that aeration may be necessary include patches of thin grass, brown spots and a high concentration of clay in the soil. Aerators can be operated manually, though professionals tend to use motorized aerators. The machines are often heavy, so homeowners should consider their health and physical ability before deciding to aerate on their own. Hiring a professional landscaper who has experience aerating may the quickest and most effective way to restore a lawn to full health.

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Fleas Spark Cat Spat DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I visited my friend’s house with my cat back in March. Now, my friend says my cat, “Chuckles,” gave her cat fleas. She wants me to pay for flea treatment. I say my cat doesn’t have fleas and I don’t owe her a thing. What do you say? -- Sierra in Modesto, California DEAR SIERRA: This is one of those spats that sometimes end up being resolved on a TV court show. While entertaining for the audience, it can be heartbreaking for both parties and can end the friendship. There is, of course, no proof that will convince your friend that Chuckles didn’t have fleas back in March. She may not even accept the fact that it’s possible to pick up fleas or flea eggs while walking outdoors and bring them into the house, where they can hatch and then hop on board a pet’s fur. And now that flea and tick season is in full swing, what may have started out as a few fleas is now a full-blown infestation. I’m not a relationship therapist, but if you value the friendship, offer to compromise somehow. You might pay for half the cost of the flea treatment -- topical treatments can be pricey. You could purchase flea prevention products and offer to help apply them in and around her home -- with the promise that you’ll apply them to your home, too, as a preventative measure. In the meantime, doublecheck that Chuckles is flea-free. Comb through his hair and look for dark speckles or visible fleas near his skin. If there are certain spots that he scratches frequently, pay special attention. Even the most diligent cat mamas may deal with fleas at the height of the season. Learn more about flea prevention in my ebook, Fighting Fleas, available on Amazon. com. And send your flea prevention tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

My name is

Savanna Mae. I turn 13 on July 19th this summer and live with my mom and Grammy. I’m their precious baby girl. I was first featured in “Pet of the Week” on Nov. 6th, 2011. I like to jump up on my 92-year-old grammy’s recliner and lay with her. She then has to climb over the arm of the chair to get out because she doesn’t want to disturb me. My Grammy also doesn’t get to read any more at night lately because I use my own personal set of stairs to climb up into her bed where I get up right next to her and get 15 min belly rubs both evening and morning. I’m spoiled beyond belief and am my mom and Grammys world, as they are mine. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Aries selfesteem level is high, as is your impatience to see more action come your way in the workplace. Good news, Lamb: It could start to happen sooner than you think. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Changing things now could upset a lot of people. But if you feel you’re acting because you believe it’s the right thing to do, others will understand and even come to support you. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A change of mind might not necessarily be a change of heart. You still want to go ahead with your plans, but you might see a better way to make them happen. So go for it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An old business dispute could re-emerge and possibly affect upcoming negotiations. Consider opening up the situation to include suggestions from others on both sides of the issue. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some Leos and Leonas might find it somewhat difficult to get their ideas accepted or even considered. But that’s only for a while. Things will soon return to the way you like them. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The pace seems to be slowing down from the hectic on-the-job run you recently enjoyed. But be assured that you’re still in the race to pick up new workplace-related goodies. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Seasonal changes create opportunities for busy Librans. However, be sure to balance your workload with your personal life so that you don’t overdo it on one end or the other. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A former critic could make a surprise turnaround and become a supporter. But if your Scorpion sense suspects a questionable motive, who are the rest of us to doubt it? SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Data on a new project seems less than dependable. But it might turn out to be just the opposite. Consult with someone who knows how you might best be able to check it out. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Capricorneans face many decisions this week, with the Sea Goat’s kids rating high on the consideration scale, especially regarding vacations and upcoming school matters. Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods.

Topics include domestic violence and other related issues. • Mondays: 1-2:30pm Mt. Morris

Nighttime Visions and Vivid Dreams --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an extremely healthy 76-year-old woman. Almost every night, I am startled awake by visions of people standing over my bed. It’s usually once, but can happen up to three times in a night. It’s often after being asleep for an hour and a half. They’re not dreams. Something wakes me up, and that is when I see a man or a couple or a child standing around my bed or attempting to jump onto the bed. Though it lasts only seconds, my heart hammers and I jump out of bed to chase “them” away, and even checking the door locks. Then I sort of come around and pretty much laugh at myself. As it’s quite frightening, I believe I shout out, and it takes me a bit to calm back down. I take NO prescription drugs nor sleep-inducing medicine. Why am I experiencing this? What actually wakes me up to see these visions? Otherwise, I sleep very well. I would greatly appreciate your insight or any advice as to who I might talk with about it. -- Anon. ANSWER: I hesitate to tell you, but what I am concerned about most is a condition called dementia with Lewy bodies. This is not Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, the earliest symptoms are usually visual hallucinations. If you read this account (https://bit.ly/2Sk1Jzo), I think you may find some characteristics that sound familiar. What makes me doubt this diagnosis is that you report no confusion or memory problems. Although some people may have the hallucinations well before any thinking problems come up, they are in a minority. Wobbliness may go along with Lewy body dementia. Parkinson’s disease may develop visual hallucinations, but that is usually late in the course of the disease. This information can be shocking or depressing, but it is still important information for you to have. There is treatment for LBD. More importantly, there are medications that can make it MUCH worse. I would recommend you visit a neurologist and specifically find someone with expertise in dementia, as that is who is unlikely to miss this diagnosis. Unfortunately, it is not always recognized early. Here is some additional information to read about this condition: https://bit.ly/2BSdmYW. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been on hydrochlorothiazide for the past three weeks. Have you heard of vivid dreams associated with this medicine? I am having difficulty with it. -- L.G. ANSWER: Vivid dreams are not typically associated with hydrochlorothiazide. HCTZ does not cross the blood-brain barrier, so it wouldn’t be expected to have this effect. However, HCTZ often is given along with other medications that can have this effect, especially beta blockers, such as propranolol. If you are taking it as part of a combination drug, I would look at the other drug. Some medications are particularly well known for causing vivid dreams, and it is wise to tell people that before prescribing them. The HIV drug efavirenz can cause such vivid, and sometimes unpleasant, dreams that some people can’t take it. Statins, steroids, antihistamines and SSRI anti-depression drugs all are known to cause dream problems in some people. When I was given the antimalarial drug mefloquine, I had no idea that it was known to cause vivid dreams until I woke up the morning after taking it wondering what had happened. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. More and more gyms are taking steps to reduce their carbon footprints, and eco-friendly fitness enthusiasts can look for such facilities before purchasing or renewing their gym memberships. Some efforts gym owners make to reduce the carbon footprint of their facilities include using only ecofriendly, biodegradable cleaning products; installing low-flow toilets, faucets and shower heads in facility restrooms and bathing areas; and installing user-powered cardiovascular machinery that consume considerably less energy than traditional machines. Yields 11 servings For pork: 2 teaspoons expeller-pressed grapeseed or canola oil 3.15 pounds Boston butt, cut into 3 pieces along natural muscle separation, trimmed of surface fat 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup vermouth, rice wine or dry sherry 2 1/2 cups thinly sliced red cabbage 1 small onion, sliced (about 1 cup) 3 tablespoons molasses (or honey) 2 tablespoons reduced sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons minced garlic 2 tablespoons minced ginger 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds For cucumbers: 1 tablespoon honey 1/8 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons rice vinegar 2 large cucumbers, peeled, cut in half lengthwise, seeded with a spoon, thinly sliced 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper To assemble: 11 soft whole-wheat hamburger buns 2 3/4 cups mungbean sprouts To make the pork: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the oil. Season the pork on all sides with salt and pepper. When oil begins to shimmer, add pork and brown on all sides, about 4 minutes per side. Add browned pork to a slow cooker. Off of the heat, add the vermouth and then place on low heat, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom of the skillet with a wooden spoon. Add contents of the skillet to the slow cooker, along with cabbage, onion, molasses, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and sesame seeds. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour; then reduce heat to low and cook for 4 hours (alternatively, cook the pork on low for the entire duration, 6 to 7 hours). To make the cucumbers: One hour before serving, in a medium bowl, stir and dissolve the honey and salt into the rice vinegar and then add the cucumbers and pepper. Chill. To assemble: Toast the buns cut side up under a broiler or in a toaster oven. Fill the buns with pork, drained cucumbers and bean sprouts. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

St. Agnes School Saved by Community Generosity By Amanda Dudek

I

t was an unprecedented situation. After 145 years of serving Avon and surrounding communities, St. Agnes School, the “little school on the circle” in Avon, was facing closure. The shutdown across all New York schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic had prevented St. Agnes from holding three of its major fundraisers as the 2019-2020 school year was coming to a close. On April 27th in the face of a budget deficit, it seemed likely the recommendation going forward on May 8th would be for the school’s closure. “We were at risk of Father Michael making a recommendation for the schools to close for the 2020-2021 school year due primarily to a budget deficit,” shared Elizabeth Jensen, principal of St. Agnes School. “The Parishes that support St. Agnes School will reduce support as well since the pandemic has created an unknown and tenuous financial situation, and collections are down.” Jensen asked what could be done, and the answer was nothing short of a miracle: raise $100,000 in just over ten days. In spite of this seemingly impossible task, those at St. Agnes School pressed on. “The next day, we formed a task force, and on April 29th, we put up a GoFundMe,” she explained. “Within three days, we had raised $100,000 thanks to community members, alumni, current and former parents of students, teachers, and even students, which was so sweet.” According to Jensen, this modern-day miracle was the answer to their prayers. Community members united in many ways to save this local gem. “One of our parents raised over $3,000 in a matter of a few days with a can and bottle drive,” she recalled. “Everyone came together to make this happen. The most powerful thing about this miracle isn’t the money, it’s the people!” Other community members, like Dipper Dan’s, made the case for St. Agnes School to remain open, sharing passionate and positive testimonies on the school’s GoFundMe page. “The Mayor of Avon sent a letter on the effect losing the school would have on the community,” she shared. “Veterans expressed their support of our school and the way we teach patriotism. Medical professionals cited the impact the school’s closing would have on mental health. We shared our test scores compared to surrounding areas.” The task force also put together a package, which included plans to increase the upcoming year’s enrollment, to convince Father Michael and others in the Diocese of all the other reasons St. Agnes School should remain open. On May 6th, just ten short days after the St. Agnes School stood on the brink of closure, Father Michael presented the Bishop with a letter recommending that Avon’s St. Agnes School remain open. “He was able to share all the ways we had solved this problem,” explained Jensen. “The community rallied around our school. It was amazing St. Agnes School student, Cole, how many of them see our school encourages others to be a as part of our parish and part of light in the dark! our community. They were bothered that they didn’t know sooner, and I think this has taught us that, when we see trouble coming, we should reach out sooner and not just for financial help, but for all kinds of support.” “At first, we thought we were only fighting for our students,” she continued. “But it turned out we were fighting for so many more people. It is all worth it when you realize the hundreds of people you have fighting with you in your corner. The community sees us as part of what makes them who they are, and they don’t want to lose us. That is why the Mayor and our Veterans were so willing to write letters. We are a part of the community, and this incredible support, love and generosity means so much, especially when so many people are struggling through this pandemic. This is our 145th year, and I am so thankful it didn’t stop.”

St. Agnes School student, Evangeline, stands by her school sign!

“Our drive encouraged others to be “a light in the darkness,” said Jensen. “When they donated, they were a light in our dark time. They lit up our sky!” Jensen feels it is also important to share this incredible experience with others. “Already, another struggling school will be following in our footsteps,” she shared. “We want to tell our story because, if we can do this in the community of Avon, why can’t other schools which are struggling do the same? I am certain there are other schools in similar situations right now, and we cannot let these faith-based schools close. They are so much more than centers for learning; they educate the whole child, earning the praise of parents and students, both past and present.” Now, St. Agnes School’s big mission is to carry this momentum and move forward. “We want to make sure we increase enrollment, close the deficit and create a reserve,” stated Jensen. “We are working on a five-year plan, partnering with our foundation on development. We plan to build stronger relationships with our parishes, providing them more support and having a greater presence there. We are looking at fundraising avenues while being mindful not to overtax our parents. We are doing everything we can to be here another 145 years!” Enjoy this article? TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

It is with a heavy heart that the Avon Rotary Corn Festival Committee has made the difficult decision to cancel the 34th Annual Avon Rotary Corn Festival scheduled for Aug. 8, 2020. Much consideration was given to every aspect of the Corn Fest. With many months of planning already for the event, it was decided that the festival could not commence this year because of all the uncertainties with the COVID-19 pandemic. The committee feels it can not effectively stage the festival and comply with all state, county and local social distancing requirements due to the unpredictability of the ever changing criteria associated with the pandemic. The health and safety of our patrons are of the utmost importance to our Rotary Club, as well as of our volunteers, sponsors, vendors and club members. The Corn Festival has been Avon Rotary's premier fundraiser since 1987, and canceling it for the first time ever is going to affect our ability to give back to our local and world community, which is a very large part of Avon Rotary's mission. However, missing Avon's premier community event will perhaps hurt worse, and for that, we are truly disappointed. Our thoughts go out to the many dedicated volunteers, organizations, businesses, and patrons that benefit financially from the festival. The Corn Festival has always been held on the second Saturday of August, and so we are looking into a more social-distancing friendly fundraiser, perhaps this summer or fall. We will try to put together another fun and safer way for the community to come together and for Avon Rotary to raise some money to further our mission. Let's hope 2021 brings us better times. The date for the 2021 Corn Festival is Saturday, Aug. 14. We hope to see you all then for our biggest and best Corn Festival ever! Regretfully, Avon Rotary GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY

Now Open for the Season

Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Create a scholarship fund. What better way to honor a loved one’s memory than to create an avenue to help others in his or her name? Scholarship funds are an ideal way to honor a deceased loved one. Work with the deceased person’s alma mater to establish a scholarship at that school.

Thank You

On May 13, 2020 we lost our dear wife, mother, sister, and friend to many. Carroll Jones battled depression for a number of years and ultimately she lost that battle. We would like to send a heartfelt thank you to everyone that has reached out. The love and support we have received from the community has been incredible and for that we are eternally grateful. Thank you for your continued thoughts and prayers.

Esther Rose Fay May 9, 2020 Dansville- Esther Rose Fay age 84, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at home early Saturday evening May 9, 2020, after a lengthy battle with ALS. Esther was born in the Town of Ossian on May 7, 1936, the daughter of Lewis Vincent and Clara Mae (Berry) Hinds and sibling to ten brothers and sisters. She was the middle child of a very close knit family, growing up in Dansville, NY. Esther was very loving and adventurous by nature. She began waitressing at age 14 at the Bernarr McFadden Health Spa. At 17, she moved to Buffalo with her sister Greta where she later met and married her first husband, William Duffy Jr. of Glasgow, Scotland who had just enlisted in the USAF. During his basic training, Esther worked as a welder for Westinghouse in Binghamton, NY. The newlyweds were first stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming and later in Sacramento, California. They eventually settled in the bay area to raise their 3 daughters. Esther enjoyed working as a telephone switchboard operator for Bell Telephone.

Herb Jones and Family May 31, 2015 It’s been 5 years since you left. In life I loved you dearly. In death I love you still. In my heart you hold a place That NO ONE else can fill. It broke my heart to lose you, But you didn’t go alone. The best of me went with you, The day God took you home.

The untimely deaths of her youngest brother Jack and her mother brought her and the girls back to Dansville. Esther began working at Gunlockes constructing furniture and later took a position with Livingston County Cooperative Extension teaching life skills to local families, fulfilling her passion for helping people. She was always very involved in church. While attending the Dansville Assembly of God Church, she was instrumental in establishing the bus ministry which provided transportation for children to attend church and enjoyed her position as the bus leader for many years.

Your loving wife, Barbara Jane

Richard R. Sales “Dick” May 23, 2020 Geneseo: Dick passed peacefully at his home on May 23, 2020 at age 80. He was born on January 1, 1940 in Boston, Mass to the late Robert and Dorothy (Olney) Sales. Predeceased by his brother Joe Sales. Survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara (Perry) Sales and sons, David Sales and Josh Sales both of Geneseo; grandchildren, Zachary and Lily Sales; sister Sue (Randy) Thomas; and many other loving family and friends. Dick and Barb were married on July 1, 1967 and they celebrated 53 years of marriage. He loved to travel and they visited many places over the years. They went on many cruises and snorkeled in many interesting places. For the past ten years Dick and Barb traveled to New Mexico during the winter months. He and Barb liked the climate, the beauty of the landscape, and learning all the history held there. Dick worked at Rochester Products for over 25 years, retiring in 2000. He loved the water and spending time on Conesus Lake. He enjoyed boating, sailing, motorcycling, reading, and having a good time. He was a proud friend of Bill W. for the last 35 years. The couple were married on November 17, 1976, sharing 42 happy years together. Family was most important to Esther. She assumed the role of family reunion coordinator from older brother George to carry on the annual Hinds Family Reunion. She also became the family historian and photographer. Esther loved photography and she always carried a camera in her purse, ever ready to capture every important moment. She was extremely proud of her legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but she also had numerous extended family who considered her their “mom.” She “adopted” everyone she met, which included many missionary families they met and sponsored ministering throughout the world. Esther retired in 1996 at age 60. Very active all her life, she had a Silver Sneakers membership. Her fitness tracker was routinely tracking 10K steps daily until she began experiencing health issues in 2018. She moved to Dansville to be close to family and attended Dansville Free Methodist Church. Esther was diagnosed with ALS in July 2019. She is survived by her daughters, Bonnie Black of Groveland, Donna Welch of Geneseo, Isabella (Dan) Lowrey of Ossian, Norman’s children, Marilyn (Aaron) Blumer of WI, Michelle (Mark) Bleakley of LA, Dale (Cindy) Beeman IL; nineteen grandchildren, twenty one great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mom will be laid to rest next to Norman at Westview Cemetery in Ossian following a private ceremony with immediate family. Arrangements are by the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc., 271 Main St. Dansville. Online remembrances may be left at HindleFuneralHome.com Memorials may be made to ALS, Free Methodist Church Addiction Recovery

“People are usually more convinced by reasons they discovered themselves than by those found by others.....” ~ B. Pascal A French philosopher, Pascal wrote today’s truism about 1650, but it is just as valid today, some 350 years later, as it was then. We all have a tendency to resist having others tell us why we should do anything. There is an implication that we are unable to decide things for ourselves. There is a moral in this for us all. If we want to be convincing, present facts in such a way that others can easily understand. Then, they may convince themselves to agree with us. When you pre-plan your own funeral arrangements, well in advance of need, financial aspects can be specified. Let us explain other advantages, without any obligation. Just call us.

Hurricane Technologies Residential Support Since August of 2002, Hurricane has been providing computer and technology support to residential and commercial customers. Over the past 10 years, our business has been shifting toward serving mostly commercial customers in the region. The COVID-19 quarantine had forced us to stop serving the needs of our residential customers, and we have made the difficult decision to keep that portion of our business closed indefinitely. We have been proud to support the residents of our community over the years and look forward to a new chapter of focusing on supporting the businesses that serve our residents. Many thanks to our loyal residential customers for the continued support over the years! Tom Vonglis, President Hurricane Technologies, Inc.

and tries to meet everyone’s needs. Staff call families, so each one is contacted three times a week to offer support, attend online meetings, and provide learning for their students. The school hands out lunches and is working diligently on new ways to keep the students engaged.

This is my first year working at the school as an aide, and I have a child in middle school, so I have firsthand experience with what is happening. The middle school teacher has online meetings with the students on Mondays and Fridays. She posts lessons online and follows up with the students and parents when the work isn’t returned. She reviews the work, writes comments and requires the work to be fixed and returned. She accepts phone calls on her personal line throughout the day

This goes out to all the management and staff at Trader Joe’s in Pittsford. They are doing an exceptional job in keeping their customers safe. They have a wonderful system of keeping customers separated outside, checking that all are wearing masks, keeping few customers in the store at one time, giving the customer a completely sanitized cart (not just a quick wipe), wiping down the credit card machine regularly, not allowing cloth bags for groceries and providing free paper bags instead, and just generally being helpful to the customers and keeping a positive with the yard? It’s their property! They might not have as much free time on their hands. If you’re worried about the property value, maybe you should offer to help them with their yard. Thank you.

The recommendations also said get in and out quickly as possible in the stores, so two people splitting up and getting the groceries gets the job done faster. That’s less time in the grocery store. I have seen big box store parking lots crammed with cars, and I have seen families shopping in there. Leave your family at home. Bring just one or two from the family, too. I don’t see many people doing the 6-foot social distancing rule, and some are without masks. Why does it really matter that your neighbor doesn’t keep up

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

While some of us follow the social distancing, stay at home, wear the mask orders, others do not. What a disregard for the wellbeing of others! Shame, shame, shame. We know of someone who is sick with a cough, and yet they have company come over their house. The guest was even hugged! They did not wear masks. They also have been driving around and gone out and not for essential things. So, they put everyone at risk. Do they have a death wish? Are they that ignorant, or possibly just defiant? Beware when you go out! If this sick person was there before you,

attitude. All other stores could take a lesson from them to keep our community safe. I will continue to be a loyal customer there. Thank you! Lima Food Pantry certainly takes care Lima’s hungry during this hard time! One example is they work together with Fanatics Restaurant every Tuesday by freely giving Fanatics’ cooked MEALS to Lima’s hungry! Those are free delicious meals, folks! Fanatics Restaurant should be gratefully acknowledged as well as The Lima Food Pantry staff for their well-meaning, freely given efforts! How kind! Thank you! - A Lima resident I want to thank Steve for trimming around my light post. In a world where some, who call themselves neighbors, would not even cut or trim a blade of grass if it were on their neighbor’s lawn, it is refreshing to have a neighbor who knows the value of treating then you could be possibly infected with whatever it is that they have. Meanwhile, for those who do care to follow the guidelines and recommendations, thank you, and may you stay well. In a world turned topsy turvy by the virus, I find it delightful someone having pink rocks. and if they want to leave some at the park, go for it. For the person complaining, lighten up; it is not hurting anything. I have a pink car, and people like looking at it. Most people like it and take pictures of it and think it is nice. Just because you don’t enjoy the pink rocks doesn’t mean you have to take the smile off someone else’s face. Life has become too serious in the light of things, and spreading some happiness is much appreciated. You can just ignore them and scroll on by in your thoughts, like you would on Facebook, for something you don’t like there.

someone the way they would want to be treated - a good principle to live by. It may seem like a small act of kindness, but it was greatly appreciated. Once again, thank you for being such a good neighbor. I went to the drive thru of Five Star in Brockport. I was nervous about how it would turn out since I haven’t done any banking at a drive thru in years. I had deposits to make and asked for a deposit slip, so I could fill it out, and was pleasantly surprised when Jorayn (hope I spelled it correctly) told me that she could just do it for me. Not only did she do that for me, but she also printed up additional deposit slips for me as well. She also told me that when I use them all up to tell them at the bank, and they will print some more up. It is such a pleasure to bank with Five Star. Thanks for being so kind Jorayn and extending such kindness.

In response to the post entitled “Protect Liberty:” How about do the right thing and follow the guidelines and protect others from what could be a death-dealing illness? That is why we are in the situation we are in: people who feel like you do. It’s called common decency, and it’s the ethical and moral thing to do. Like an official said, how difficult can it be to wear a mask? Really! Have a good day, and make sure to stay well. Will you give up your ventilator should you need one? Food for thought. Regarding those who defiantly disobey social distancing, wearing of masks or protest in order to go back to work too soon during this coronavirus pandemic: I feel authorities should collect their social security numbers, and they shouldn’t be allowed to go to the hospital and go on ventilators because they are bringing harm to others.

by John Thomas From these writings, we learn that the gospel of the kingdom of God is a phrase which embraces the whole subject; and that the mystery of the kingdom, and the fellowship of the mystery, are things pertaining to the gospel of the kingdom in a special sense, but unknown until revealed to the apostles. The mysteries of the kingdom were placed on record in the sacred writings; but their signification was hidden from the prophets themselves; until “THE KEYS” thereof were vouchsafed to the apostles. Hence, says Peter, “of the salvation of souls the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: searching into certain things, also what point of time the spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Spirit sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.” (1Pet. 1:1-12). Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

SENIOR NEWS LINE

Safety first before mixing medications

By Matilda Charles

Staying Informed Has your Meals on Wheels expanded their service? In a number of areas, the program has taken on more volunteers or widened the area they cover, having received grants and other funding, giving more seniors the opportunity to have meals delivered. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, those meals might be covered, if you meet the qualifications. Some areas are establishing meal delivery from restaurants for seniors who shouldn't go out. If you have a town council, they will know about any kind of changes in your area. Some towns have an online list of restaurants with details about whether they're closed or are providing service (curbside, limited inside seating or delivery). Other areas have free senior pickup meals for those who can drive to the location. Call your local senior center or check their website for more information. If you're not certain what programs are available in your area to help you, go online to 211.org and put your ZIP code in the search box. That will take you to the 211 for your state. You can either call them or click on their online directory of information. They list food (delivery and pantry), substance use, utility assistance, transportation and much more. Each agency lists the programs it offers, such as personal support services and family caregiver. Stay healthy.

The American Heart Association notes that mixing drugs can produce unexpected side effects. This can make it dangerous for people already on prescription medications to use over-the-counter drugs for issues like headache or seasonal allergies. Understanding the potential interactions between their prescriptions and common prescription and over-the-counter medications can help people stay safe. · Antihistamines: Antihistamines are widely used to alleviate symptoms of the common cold or seasonal allergies, such as runny nose, itchy eyes and sneezing. The AHA notes that, when taken along with blood pressure medication, antihistamines can contribute to an accelerated heart rate and cause blood pressure to spike. The AHA also cautions people taking sedatives, tranquilizers or prescriptions to treat high blood pressure or depression to consult their physicians before taking antihistamines. · Bronchodilators: Bronchodilators relax and open the airways in the lungs and are used to treat various lung conditions, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. These drugs make it easier to breathe and are available via prescriptions. But patients with heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, and/or diabetes should discuss the potential interactions between bronchodilators and other medications they may be taking with their physicians. · Cordarone: According to Drugs.com, Cordarone is used to treat potentially deadly abnormal heartbeats. Cordarone can cause severe problems that affect the lungs, thyroid or liver, and can be dangerous when combined with other drugs. For example, the AHA notes that patients who take more than 20 milligrams of Zocor, a drug used to lower “bad” cholesterol and potentially to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack and other conditions, while also taking Cordarone are at risk of developing rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition marked by the breakdown of muscle tissue that can lead to kidney failure or death. The AHA also says that Cordarone can inhibit or reduce the effects of the blood thinner Coumadin. · Nicotine replacement products: People taking prescriptions for depression or asthma should consult their physicians before taking any nicotine replacement products. The Federal Drug Administration notes that doctors may want to change dosages of patients’ current medications before recommending they take any nicotine replacement products. The FDA also advises people to speak with their physicians before trying these products if they have diabetes, heart disease, asthma or stomach ulcers; have had a recent heart attack; have high blood pressure but do not take any medication for it; or have a history of irregular heartbeat. Drug interactions can complicate treatment of various conditions. People currently on medication are urged to speak with their physicians before taking any new medicines, including over-the-counter drugs. TF207100

www.focuschild.org

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Need a twist tie in an emergency? Check your coffee bag. Many bean bags sold these days -- from the grocery store and specialty roasters alike -- come in a bag with a twist tie built in, so you can fold the bag down and retain freshness. If you really need one, you can pull the twist tie off and seal your grounds in a tin or a zipper-top baggie. * Get to know your frozen veggies. There’s been a lot of emphasis in the past about fresh vegetables. While they’re great, it’s not always possible to get to the grocer’s or farmer’s market regularly. Frozen veggies often have the most vitamins because most are flash frozen right after harvest. You can find many varieties, and they’re easy to use in most recipes. * New use for a favorite mug: “My friend gave me a coffee mug that’s adorable, but it’s not very nice in the microwave -- it just gets too hot! I drink hot tea, and my mug is constantly in and out of the microwave. So, I use my gift mug to hold tea bags! It sits on my counter and holds enough packaged bags for a full week. And I can look at it and think of my friend.” -- T.W. in South Carolina * “To get the rubber tops of my son’s sneakers clean, and keep them that way, I use the melamine cleaning sponges, like the Magic Eraser. Just get it damp, rub off (most) grass stains and keep it handy.” -- P.E. in Kentucky * Gotta paint a door? Put a lag bolt into the top and bottom of the door, on the narrow. This way, the lag bolt rests on your sawhorses, and you can flip the door over to paint each side. No longer do you have to paint one side, let it dry ALL THE WAY and then flip it over, risking paint getting pulled off the edges. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK Write things down. A to-do list floating around in your head can become overwhelming. The physical task of writing things down and crossing items off the list one-by-one can help you sail through tasks effectively. If you’re a mobile person, jot the list down on the notes function of a smartphone or use a task app that syncs with calendar functions.
