HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Free up space on your smartphone by setting text messages to auto delete after a certain amount of time, like 30 or 60 days. If you have a friend who loves to send you gifs or endless bitmojis, you might want to have your chuckle, then delete. These image files take up much more space than a text message. * “Baking soda can have a whitening effect on some fabrics and is a good alternative for items that might be sensitive to the harshness of bleach in the washing machine. It’s fantastic for musty items as well. Add a cup of baking soda to a load of towels, then add a cup of vinegar to the rinse water.” -- T.H. in Kansas * Periodically take down curtains and run them through the clothes dryer to dust. If they are not delicate, you can add a couple wool dryer balls to help loosen the dust. Rehang as soon as they are finished to avoid unsightly wrinkles. * “Drop a small item in a hard to reach place? Slip a sock over the end of a vacuum hose attachment and hold to secure. Turn on the vacuum and “suck up” the small item. The suction will hold it in place, but it will not go into the vacuum. Rather, it will be held captive in the sock, which you can simply slip off for retrieval.” -- A.F. in New York * Pet treats for fish? Sure! If you have lettuce in your vegetable crisper, most varieties of fish would enjoy a nibble on a floating piece. Just make sure that you remove any uneaten bits after a day.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

“Have You Ever Smoked?” ---

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question that I’d love to see answered in your column sometime. My husband recently had major surgery. Before the surgery, they asked if he has ever smoked. (Husband is 77.) He answered that when he was 9, he smoked a cigarette. He is now in the computer as an ex-smoker, and the nurse told us she is “required by law” to provide him with information on quitting. When physicians ask, “Have you ever smoked?” do they really want to hear about one cigarette, smoked almost 70 years ago? Is this meaningful information, in medical terms? -- S.S. ANSWER: There are very important reasons to know a person’s smoking history, especially when someone is about to undergo surgery. Current smokers should know that quitting well before surgery can reduce risks of surgical complications. The anesthesiologist can be extra-vigilant for breathing issues. Some of these points are valid for ex-smokers who have recently quit or who were very heavy smokers. Of course, one cigarette at age 9 is meaningless, and anytime I hear “required by law” I wonder if it’s really true. In this case, I doubt it: Why give ex-smokers information on quitting? It makes no sense. Primary care providers like me ask about smoking because a significant history of smoking increases heart disease risk, so I might be more likely to recommend treatment to reduce that risk (for example, in a person with elevated blood pressure or cholesterol who otherwise doesn’t quite meet criteria for drug treatment). Also, people who smoked more than 1 pack per day for 30 years, or the equivalent, should have a discussion about whether screening for lung cancer is appropriate. Finally, it’s easier to answer if you have never been a smoker. Some people who smoke socially don’t consider themselves smokers but would still benefit from advice to stop. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I took a sleep study and slept on my back all night because I was wired up and couldn’t sleep on my side. After a couple of hours, I was told that I have moderate sleep apnea. I snore when I’m on my back, but not when I’m on my side. Do you think I really have sleep apnea? -- T.M. ANSWER: Obstructive sleep apnea very often goes unrecognized. It is caused by the soft tissue in the neck obstructing the airway; the muscles relax while you are asleep, closing the airway. This is indeed much more likely to happen when lying on the back (we use the anatomical term “supine”), and generations of spouses have learned that turning a snorer on the side is a good way to get him or her to quit snoring. Snoring is caused by the very same process that leads to sleep apnea; in fact, snoring is a significant risk factor, with up to a third of snorers having the condition. I believe the sleep study. While I am sure you would have demonstrated less obstruction if you could sleep on your side, you still are likely to have some obstruction during the night, especially since we frequently change position while sleeping without knowing it. However, there are many different treatments for sleep apnea, and you should talk with your doctor about which is right for you. You need not jump to the most aggressive treatments. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. TREATING DEPRESSION Depression is a very treatable condition. Psychotherapy (talk therapy), medications or a combination thereof can be very effective in managing symptoms. Mental health professionals can work with individuals to find the right therapy based on symptoms and severity of the depression. Also, it may take some time to find the right medication or treatment; therefore, people are urged to remain patient and hopeful. The National Institute of Mental Health says people who suspect they may be suffering from depression should make an appointment to see a doctor or health care provider. The sooner action is taken, the more quickly the condition can be addressed.

Cooped Up Toddlers Keep Tormenting Pets

In-Kennel Webcams!

Howlywood Kennels

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My toddlers will not stop tormenting our pets! They chase the cat and pull his tail; they dive-bomb the dog and scare her every time she lays down for a nap. I’m tired of chasing after them and trying to stop them. What else can I do? Lock the pets in another room? -– Susanna Y., Ogden, Utah DEAR SUSANNA: Let me ask you this: Why should the pets be punished every time your toddlers misbehave? Your dog should be able to nap peacefully in her own doggie bed, and the cat should be able to sit quietly at the window. That’s the ideal, anyway. I know it’s difficult, especially since all of us are cooped up right now. But, consider that toddlers tend to react just as well to a punishment/reward system as most dogs (and some cats) do, if not more so. Make it clear that your kids are not to torment the pets -- and that if they do, there will be consequences. As to the consequences: What are their favorite things to do? Play with specific toys? Watch certain Netflix Kids cartoons? Eat candy? They may be very young, but threatening to (temporarily) remove one of their favorite activities or snacks can be effective. And of course, there’s always the tried-and-true time out. I wish I had more advice to give you. Chasing around toddlers is truly exhausting. Just try to be firm and make it clear that it’s wrong for them to torment the pets. We’ll all be able to get out of the house soon.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.” -- Albert Einstein

Excerpt from

Village of Lima CLEAN UP DAYS

Elpis Israel by John Thomas

Friday & Saturday, June 26-27, 2020 THURSDAY, June 25th for Seniors Only (65+)

On the other hand, a man may believe that Jesus is the Son of God; that he was sent of God as a messenger to Israel; that there is remission of sins through the shedding of his blood; that he is the savior; and that he rose from the dead: if he believe these things, but be ignorant, and consequently faithless, of “the things of the kingdom,” he cannot obtain glory, honor, incorruptibility, and life in that kingdom. The condition of salvation is the belief of the whole gospel and obedience to it. It is not, “he that believes in Jesus Christ, and is immersed shall be saved;” but “he who shall believe THE GOSPEL, and is immersed” (Mk. 16:15-16), Simply to believe in Jesus is to believe no more than in “the MESSENGER;” but, he was sent to preach the gospel to the poor; to show the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: this was his MESSAGE, the message of God to the Jew first, and afterwards to the Greek. Let it be remembered then, that salvation is predicated upon belief in the MESSENGER and in the MESSAGE he brings from God. “I came to preach the kingdom of God,” says Jesus.

8am – 12pm drop-off at Village Garage, 7336 Dublin Ave., Lima, NY SENIORS should call the Village Office (624-2210) by Tuesday, June 23rd to make an appointment. Only two pickup loads per household. Lima Physical Therapist, Walt Fritz, Encourages Local Hiking BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

aking walks has become one of the new national pastimes since COVID-19 restrictions were put into place. People are seeking ways to get out of their houses and enjoy nature while continuing to social distance. Walt Fritz, physical therapist and founder of The Pain Relief Center in Lima, has found a way to help those in area communities do just that. An avid hiker himself, Fritz started making short videos of his hikes along local trails, sharing these “Get Outa the House Hike” videos on social media as well as his own self-titled YouTube channel. He hopes to keep people moving while they continue social distancing. “This seemed logical because I am a walker and hiker,” explained Fritz, whose manual therapy seminars as well as much of his physical therapy practice are currently on hold. “I now have some time on my hands, and this seemed like a good way to give back and give people some places to go that are safe as far as keeping distance and are helpful for keeping active and keeping their kids occupied.” Fritz, who moved with his wife to Lima ten years ago, was thrilled to establish his Lima location in January of this year, unfortunately not long before the advent of COVID-19 in the United States and the restrictions that came along with it. Like many professionals, he decided one of the best ways to continue serving area communities was through social media. “I have been posting my hiking videos on Facebook groups as well as on my YouTube channel which does keep me visible,” said Fritz of his over a dozen hike videos. “But its purpose is to give back and get people out of the house, help them not to feel stuck. It has been fun for me.” Fritz hikes locally, choosing places he feels are lesser known, and his hikes vary in level of difficulty. “There are easy and challenging ones,” he said. “I have posted a lot on regular walking and pushing yourself harder with walks. Some of my hikes are more village walks, but if you want to get out there and challenge yourself, you can.”

walk faster. They found that morbidity diminished, people lived longer and had better cardio health.” The implications of these findings are significant. “You do not have to commit to a longer period of walking, just walk faster,” said Fritz. “There are many studies on the physical health benefits of walking. People can get out there, get themselves healthier and more fit, avoid the ‘COVID waistline’ and Walt Fritz, PT, encourages staying active! putting on pounds. Walking is also excellent for your mental health.” In relationship to coronavirus concerns, Fritz insists walks and hikes are safe and important. “From the beginning until now, getting outside and getting exercise have always been recommended so long as you can keep social distance,” he said. “Walking is an easy access activity, so get out there and if you feel it necessary, wear your mask. There are many places you can find. I just posted one yesterday, and it was a hard hike for me up the side of Bristol Mountain, but you don’t have to feel like it has to be too difficult.” As for future hike videos, Fritz plans to keep doing them. “I just did the Stid Hill one,” he said. “There is so much in this area that is so easily accessible and within a 30 minute drive. We have a lot to live for in this area, and I would hope to keep sharing my hike videos and photos. I am not sure what is next, so stay tuned!” For more information, check out Walt Fritz’ videos on YouTube.com.

“As a physical therapist, my whole mantra is to keep moving and getting exercise,” continued Fritz. “It isn’t rigid, and I love finding articles on the benefits of walking for cardiovascular health, mental health and more. My personal motivator for walking and hiking is to stay fit and healthy. These videos allow me to share walking and hiking as part of physical therapy and social interest habits.” Importantly, Walt Fritz explained the benefits of walking. He specifically cited a 2018 study originating in Scotland entitled, “Selfrated walking pace and all-cause, cardiovascular disease and cancer mortality: individual participant pooled analysis of 50, 225 walkers from 11 population British cohorts.” Fritz explained, “In this study, they simply asked people to continue taking their normal walk but to

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

Communication becomes difficult… Trouble communicating with others can be a symptom of various disorders. Difficulty conveying words or emotions can be a condition of autism spectrum disorder, but quite frequently it occurs when a neurological injury affects the portion of the brain responsible for language. The National Aphasia Association states that aphasia is an impairment of language that affects the comprehension or the production of speech as well as the ability to read and write. Aphasia results from an injury to the brain, including head trauma, brain tumors, infections, and stroke. The Cleveland Clinic notes a person with aphasia may experience difficulty speaking, writing, reading, and understanding language. Impairments can range from mild to very severe (nearly impossible to communicate). While aphasia may only affect one area of communication, usually limitations occur across many areas. One of the more common symptoms of aphasia is word-finding issues. This can be characterized by challenges remembering the names of people, events or things. Sometimes an individual may not be able to think of the word he or she wants to say. In other instances, that person may say the wrong word entirely, such as using “rope” for the word “ball.” The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association also states that it is common for someone with aphasia to switch sounds in words, like “wishdasher” for “dishwasher.” Often sentences are difficult to come by, and single words may be easier.

Being bored isn’t good, especially for seniors. We need to keep our brain cells active, even if we can’t get out of the house for any mental stimulation due to the coronavirus. And we need to find ways to move each day, even if it’s just for 10 minutes at a time, to keep our muscles strong. Look at YouTube.com for mild in-place exercises for seniors. Go online to find a kids’ basketball hoop and soft ball you can hang over the door. Look for a dartboard with magnetic darts. If you have an old Nintendo Wii console, hook it up and get some exercise with the bowling and tennis. If you have an indoor hobby, call your closest store and ask if they have curbside pickup or can mail supplies to you. Put “online craft tutorials” in your internet browser for new ideas. Tune up your guitar and order new strings. Find your old piano books if you have a piano. To keep your brain stretched, if you get a newspaper, do the puzzles, even the ones you normally don’t try. Go online for other puzzles you can print out or complete online. Go to puzzles.usatoday.com for a wide variety of online games. With the crossword puzzles you can choose your skill level (hints versus no hints). Use your keyboard to type in each letter. Try jigsaw puzzles, spelling games, backgammon (play against an opponent or the computer) or mahjong. Also look at Boatload Puzzles (www.boatloadpuzzles.com) for 40,000 crossword puzzles. For real brain stretchers look to Merriam-Webster (www.merriam-webster. com/word-games) or AARP (games.aarp.org). For short-term memory games, look at BrainCurls.com. Meanwhile, here’s a puzzle for you. What is the next letter in this sequence? O T T F F S S __ The answer will be at the end of my next column.

Trouble communicating also extends to a person with aphasia having challenges understanding what others are saying, particularly when they speak fast or in long sentences. The situation may be exacerbated when it is noisy or a person is in a group setting. Aphasia can affect anyone. However, it is more common in those who are middle-aged and older. The NAA says roughly 180,000 people are diagnosed with aphasia each year. Even though brain injury is a primary cause of aphasia, it also can create other language-related issues, such as weakness in the muscles that control the face or mouth or an inability to move the lips or tongue in the right way to make sounds. People with aphasia can benefit from working with a speech-language pathologist as early as possible. This professional can present many strategies to help manage deficits or potentially return some measure of communication. Augmentative and alternative communication, such as using images or a computer to tell what a person wants, may be options in more severe cases of aphasia. Aphasia affects many people and can rob them of the ability to communicate effectively without intervention. TF206030 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The Lamb is usually excited about taking on a new challenge. But if that’s a touch of doubt you’re feeling, maybe it’s you telling yourself to go slow on this until you learn more about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Accepting new commitments when you haven’t yet finished the batch on hand could be a bit rash. Better to ease up on the new ones until you get further along with your current lot. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Try to be more open-minded in working toward a resolution of that standoff between yourself and a colleague or family member. A little flexibility now could work to your advantage later. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Some people might be anxious about your plans. So you need to take time to explain what you expect to do and how you expect do it. And don’t forget to ask for suggestions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Dealing with an unfamiliar problem can be difficult. The wisest course you can take is to ask for advice from those who have been where you are and have come through it. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Tackle a frustrating job problem by considering possibilities you might have ignored before. This reassures colleagues you’re serious about finding a solution, even if it’s not totally yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your balanced approach to life proves to be helpful this week when someone you care for needs your spiritual comfort, while someone else benefits from your toughlove practicality. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Once again, you’re likely to be asked to keep a secret for someone. But do you really want to do so? Be honest with yourself and with your needs before you make any such commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Taking a more direct approach from the more diplomatic one you’ve used before could make a difference in finally resolving a too-long-held disagreement. Try it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Being asked for advice is flattering to the Sea Goat, who has a habit of saying the right thing. This time, expect someone to be especially impressed and to act on that sentiment. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) With a number of pressures easing, your project could be making a lot more progress than you expected by this time. That’s great news. But don’t let yourself be distracted; stay with it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An interesting challenge looms that could be exactly what you’ve been looking for. Discuss this with colleagues who could have much to contribute and who might want to join with you. BORN THIS WEEK: Your heart is always open to offer loving concern for others. And they, in turn, reach out to complete the circle. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Anna M. Schunk “Ann” May 1, 2020 Lima: At age 83, Anna passed away peacefully on Friday, May 1, 2020 at Highland Hospital in Rochester. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

Jan H. Lesterhuis December 7, 2019 Livonia: Jan passed peacefully on December 7, 2019 at age 71. Predeceased by his parents Heiko and Klasiena Lesterhuis. A few being his love for vintage sleds, especially Yamahas, competitive shooting, hunting, racing slot cars with family and friends, and most importantly his time with his grandchildren. Those who knew Jan knew he was never one to mince words. His straightforward personality made him so easy to love. You never had to question what was on his mind. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at the Cohocton Pavilion, 15 S. Main Street, Cohocton, NY on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at 1:00pm. We ask those in attendance to bring a dish to pass, your beverage of preference, and a story to tell! CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Create a scholarship fund. What better way to honor a loved one’s memory than to create an avenue to help others in his or her name? Scholarship funds are an ideal way to honor a deceased loved one. Work with the deceased person’s alma mater to establish a scholarship at that school.

The MacDonald family have made beautiful masks for our family and many other home school families like us! A big shout out and lots of prayers for them! Let us hope this ends soon! I want to thank my neighbors in the Hillsboro Cove area in Webster. My husband and I take our nightly walk and recently came across the most awesome window decorations. The neon lights & positive message was just what the doctor ordered! What a great idea! You have made us look forward to our walks! I am so grateful for the dedicated work of school employees and am thoroughly satisfied with how my tax dollars have been spent during the building closure.

I agree with the person who wrote how there are those who defiantly disobey and go out and who do not do the social distancing to boot. How about when and if they get the coronavirus, they waive their right to a ventilator so that some other poor soul can have use of it. They put all the first responders and those in the medical profession at risk. Some people would not care about others and just want to do what they want to do, unless it bit them in the you know where. They would be the first one to boohoo if they were to get sick. Too late then! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

That is indeed great advice. I must admit that sometimes I am guilty of picking up items, and then not buying them. I usually must do that to look at the expiration dates on an item. If the date is not good, it has to go back on the shelf, but in the times we are living in, I wholeheartedly agree that we need to be careful about such things, and I will make a conservative effort to think twice before doing so, although I don’t want to buy food that has already expired. I, for one, wonder why more than one person goes out shopping. I go out by myself and do the grocery shopping for my family. At least, I have that right. I also wonder why some have their adult children drop by while the rest of us obey the restrictions. Just want to reiterate in the post of 4-3-20: if you see someone begging for money for food, yes, they are drug addicts. My son was one

Thank you to every school employee, in every district, for providing the outstanding effort and creativity required to make distance learning work. Teachers are providing instruction in a new format, administrators working tirelessly to provide resources, counselors checking in and sharing information, coaches developing workouts, Secretaries getting work to kids and back to teachers, tech departments sharing resources, custodians thoroughly cleaning, food service and transportation getting meals out, and students for continuing to value education. School buildings are closed, but everyone continues to work overtime. Thank you all!

Yet in the midst of it, I have seen much love and kindness being spread around. I want to thank local businesses, community groups, county boards, and individuals who have reached out to essential workers during this time to encourage us. Thank you for the meals, cards, yard signs, gifts, and much more that you have done to support and encourage me and my coworkers. As a healthcare worker, it has been my privilege to serve the families in our communities as I care for their elderly loved ones during this uncertain time. May the Lord bless you all with the peace that passes all understanding, which comes through Jesus Christ. - Anna Kranz, Livonia, NY

These past few weeks have brought our communities concern, anxiety, and hardship. of them and has told us this. The money is for drugs. There are many food kitchens in Rochester. If you feel the need to help, bring them a meal from McDonald’s, buy them a bus pass to get to a food kitchen, give them some warm clothes (even though they might sell them). Never give them money.

not pack them well in those little bins, and on windy days all their recyclable garbage blows all over into the streets and people’s lawns for others to have to clean up . Please be respectable and pack your trash in tightly. With the virus going on, others should not have to pick up your trash. Keep our country clean!

During our daily walks on [local road] in [local town], it’s amazing to see the amount of garbage that is thrown out of vehicles as they drive down our road in and around the area, including cans, bottles, restaurant trash, etc. Someone is throwing empty single shot bottles of whiskey out their car window. Every day, there seems to be a new one the road. Can you please stop throwing your garbage out the car window? Thank you.

I am curious how the writer who was upset that people are still going out, going to markets knows this? The writer even overheard a woman who said she was not staying home. How did you hear this if you are staying home?

Do the recyclables really get recycled? I was informed they do not. Problem with them is people who put their recyclables out do

Picture the Possibilities For Your Home! INSPECT YOUR CHIMNEY FOR SAFETY Start with the chimney. Begin by having your chimney thoroughly cleaned and inspected. Creosote can build up inside of the chimney. Creosote is highly flammable and becomes more difficult and expensive to clean the longer it builds up inside your flue lining. In addition, animals may have created nest inside of the chimney since the last time the fireplace was used. A professional chimney sweep should be hired in this situation. He or she will be able to effectively clean the chimney in a manner that is the least messy and disruptive to residents.

DID YOU KNOW? Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.

The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME Testing can determine if radon is present in a home. Homeowners can rely on professional companies or purchase self-testing kits at home improvement retailers. If a test comes back positive for high levels, conduct a follow-up test before taking any measures to fix the problem. Unusual weather can increase radon levels. If repeat testing yields the same results, efforts to reduce radon levels are necessary. Homeowners must keep in mind that no two situations are the same and various techniques may be necessary to reduce radon levels in a home. Simply opening the windows in a home may not be enough, and many radon remedies require the skilled services of professional contractors who are experienced in radon reduction procedures. Homes can be fixed, but some instances may be best left to the professionals. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

KEEP CRITTERS OUT OF YOUR HOUSE Human beings are not the only creatures looking for warm and cozy spots to ride out autumn and winter. Very often wild animals see homes as the perfect spots to nest and survive the cold. Fall is a great time to inspect your home top to bottom and make sure there are no points of entry for unwanted guests. The Humane Society notes that deteriorated trim and fascia boards can make great entry points for animals like squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and possums. Other animals may bed down under porches or decks or even inside chimneys. Seal any holes or repair points that are penetrable by cold animals. Just be sure to inspect the home prior to sealing or capping any potential entry points to be certain there aren’t any animals already living inside. Otherwise you can trap unwanted animals in your home. Test possible entry points by sealing them loosely with a paper towel or insulation and see if the material gets pushed out. ●

KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN Fight intruders with odor. Stray cats may mistake gardens for litter boxes and enter them to relieve themselves. Preventing such intrusions can be as simple as placing items around the garden to reduce the likelihood that gardens will be mistaken for litter boxes. Peels from oranges and lemons or coffee grounds can be placed in the garden and can emit odors strong enough to deter cats.

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Local vendors will be familiar with the area and possibly even the location where the wedding will be held. That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with non-local vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have preexisting relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding day operations go smoothly.
