MAKE HIS FIRST FATHER’S DAY SPECIAL Let Dad sleep in. Chances are Dad is enamored with his little bundle of joy, but it’s well-known that being a new father often means sacrificing sleep time - especially for the first several months to a year of that child’s life. Enlist the help of a family member who can be on baby watch while Dad gets to sleep in on the weekend of his big day. With some extra sleep, Dad can enjoy Father’s Day that much more.

M aintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride Balancing tires involves equalizing the w eight of the combined tire and w heel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the w heel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise w eight distribution is nearly impossible w ithout a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires w obble, causing noticeable vibrations. M echanics w ill test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine w ill spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting w eights w ill be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of w eight. Lead w eights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead. Tires that are not balanced w ill not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven w ear.

Hurricane Technologies Residential Support Since August of 2002, Hurricane has been providing computer and technology support to residential and commercial customers. Over the past 10 years, our business has been shifting toward serving mostly commercial customers in the region. The COVID-19 quarantine had forced us to stop serving the needs of our residential customers, and we have made the difficult decision to keep that portion of our business closed indefinitely. We have been proud to support the residents of our community over the years and look forward to a new chapter of focusing on supporting the businesses that serve our residents. Many thanks to our loyal residential customers for the continued support over the years! Tom Vonglis, President Hurricane Technologies, Inc.

I have family members basically in every field as essential workers, (nurse, officer, co, fabric store for masks, etc.) ,but the person I’d like to give extra love to is my mother who works every day to make sure you get your groceries. The amount of stress grocery store workers face is harrowing, and I commend you. I pray you don’t catch it from one of the people from the public. Keep hanging in there. You’re part of the strong and resilient. Continue to do your good so others can feed their families. Peggy at Top’s pharmacy in Hamlin is so nice to bring my prescription out to the car when I am unable to go in. Thank you for your kindness! Also, a shout out to Anthony, one of the pharmacist’s at Top’s. He is more than just someone who fills your prescription for you. He listens
Even I have to feed my family and get groceries every three weeks when we run out. Not all of us have internet to place the pickup orders, and I take every precaution: wearing gloves and my n95 mask when going out as well as disposing of the used gloves in a plastic bag in my car. I do not stay. I do not linger. I do not buy and browse. I write my list, get what I need, stay 6 feet away from people who still don’t do this. I check out. I heard her brag, and then I went home, shut in to do house projects. So yes, I need food to live. Hope that clarifies your confusion.

I went to [local store] over the weekend and was so proud to see young and old wearing masks. What a sharp contrast to those who are fighting for rights and do not see the need to wear masks! As one psychologist put it, “Some people just don’t like being told what to do.” I think he hit the nail on the head. So, in actuality, it really has nothing to do with liberty, but it is an attitude problem. It was a pleasure to see people doing the right thing, even if wearing a mask could be a challenge for some. It renewed my faith in society that there are those who will do the moral and ethical thing in such unsettling times. To the man in the grey hooded sweatshirt and white tennis shoes: Please kindly refrain from stealing the flowers that I and others work so diligently to plant. Your mother would not be amused nor your wife fooled by

if you have questions, and offers sound, practical advice. The other day, he even went the extra mile to come out from the pharmacy area, to show me something that perhaps my son should take. I had a choice to make, and I told him to pick, because I trust his insight. Usually pharmacists can be clinical, counting pills behind the glass partitions without having much if any interaction with the customers who come in to pick up their prescriptions. This is not the case with Anthony! Thanks! I want to thank the mechanics for still working through this pandemic, for keeping doctors, nurses, truckers, and personal vehicles going. I am so appreciative of it. If it were not for them working on my car, I would not have been able to still work and get groceries for my family. I also want to thank their families to whom they go your cheap and thieving behavior for their Mother’s Day gift. Please go to a store and get a beautiful bouquet of flowers and possibly a card. It will be worth it when they see you actually put in the effort. Petty complaints do not deserve the space they take up. Look for the good in every situation! I also am tired of picking up others trash, but at least I can do so! Yes, it would be great if people picked up after themselves or better still, did not throw stuff along roads, but who do we have to blame? Were they ever taught to pick up after themselves? I detest people who use rat poison. Not only is it a horrible way to die, but it can have a ripple effect. I’ve seen it with my own eyes working for a vet for several years, like the cat who ate a mouse that had eaten poison. The vet did all he could do but the cat didn’t make it. Then there were the eagles I watch on the internet whose first

home after being in contact with our vehicles, putting their own families at risk. Just know you are appreciated during this time. I live on North Street and walk my dog on my property. To my surprise during the month of March, I was fascinated in finding beautifully painted, small rocks at the base of my trees, first one, then others. I had spoken of it to my family members, wondering if it might have been them. No one admitted, so I am assuming it was a kind, loving person, maybe even a family trying to spread love and sunshine during these uncertain days. I want you to know, whoever you are, I loved this gesture and looked forward to seeing these beautiful treasures. Thank you, thank you, thank you,
baby died because the dead rat its parent brought to the nest to feed it had died of rat poison; the baby eagle got some of the poison, which killed it. How do we know this? Wildlife people got the dead baby and did a necropsy (autopsy) on it. This was a symbol of our country, of our freedom, and man destroyed it. There are other ways to deal with mice and rats, humane ways, too. Try using traps or smelly things. They don’t like strong smelling stuff like ammonia or bleach or even Irish Spring hand soap, peppermint oil, tea bags, etc. Remember, if you live with woods all around you, learn to live with the creatures in those woods. God put every creature on this earth for a reason. Humans are destroying this earth. I read that millions of birds are gone now. After they go, we will have more insects to contend with. It all has a ripple effect.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

INSURED • FREE QUOTES • FAMILY OWNED CONTROL CRABGRASS BEFORE IT APPEARS Apply a pre-emergent herbicide. Pre-emergent herbicides kill crabgrass seedlings as they germinate. While these herbicides are highly effective, they must be applied at precisely the right time. The right time to apply them depends on weather patterns. For example, Lowes notes that homeowners who live in regions that might have experienced warmer than usual winters will probably need to apply the herbicides earlier than usual. While the manufacturer instructions should always be followed when applying herbicides, it’s essential that homeowners take weather patterns into consideration as well.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Window frames can be tricky to clean. And they are a magnet for dust and dirt, or worse -condensation that can lead to mold. To get into the crevices, employ a toothbrush sprayed with a tiny spritz of furniture polish. It works! * “Firing up the grill? Don’t get hasty. Preheat. Cooking times are based on an even cooking temperature, and you’ll get that good sear on your steaks or chicken. Use a grill thermometer and you’ll know when just the right time is to put dinner on the grill!” -- T.E. in South Carolina * Ever wonder how long your peanut butter will last? On the pantry shelf, you can expect it to hold for 7-12 months if stored in a cool dark place. After opening, it will last 3-4 months in the fridge.
Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.
* Smudged mascara? Remove it on the fly with a little bit of lip balm. Simply run your finger over the lip balm, then carefully remove the smudge. You also can put a bit of the lip balm on a tissue and use that instead. * “I dropped a glass in the kitchen, and there were a ton of small pieces. After I swept up, I wiped the area with a piece of bread, which picked up all the small shards.” -- W.C. in Kentucky * Stick-down carpet tiles are great for making a path from where you park your car in the garage to the door. It makes a nice nonslip surface.” -- R.T. in Florida

DRAFTY WINDOWS ARE AN ISSUE Drafty windows make homes less comfortable by allowing cold air in during the winter and warm air in when temperatures rise. But comfort is not the only concern associated with leaky windows, as such fixtures also can have a negative impact on the environment. Leaky windows require heating and cooling systems to work harder to keep home interiors comfortable during times of the year when temperatures can be extreme. In the dead of winter, a leaky window will force a home’s inhabitants to turn up the thermostat, which only increases energy consumption and energy bills. The same scenario plays out in summer, when leaky windows allow hot air in, leading homeowners to lower the temperature of air conditioning units so everyone inside is cool and comfortable. ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all. While large homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help owners save money, require less maintenance, have smaller environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate “stuff.” Owners of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

Dansville’s Your Center Founder, Tina Markle, Continues Serving Seniors By Amanda Dudek
S
enior citizens are one of our most beloved and vulnerable populations. Tina Markle was so moved to care for our elderly friends, family and neighbors that she established Your Center, a senior center, in Dansville. A health care worker for the past 15 years, Markle understands just how important it is to provide for the social needs as well as the physical needs of seniors. “I have always wanted to open up a soup kitchen, and I joke with the seniors that the Center is our soup kitchen,” chuckled Markle. “When Your Center is open, it is free to everyone, and the less fortunate people who are in need come to enjoy our dining area with its TV, breakfast, lunch, free clothing, haircuts, crafts, games like Bingo... everything is done for free.” While the work she does has not yet become a 501(c)3, Markle provides funds for the Center, food and services for the elderly herself, along with some donations she receives, all of which, she emphatically stated, are used to provide for seniors in need. “We are not for profit at all,” she said. “When people tell me they have a need, I do my best to meet it. I get joy out of what I do.” Enter COVID-19. People were no longer able to gather, and social distancing had become especially important in protecting the health of our senior populations. Markle could no longer hold meals and activities at her center. “When this horrible virus hit, I still wanted to be able to help people,” she explained. “I decided to make free weekly meals for the community, even for essential workers at first, too. My family pitched in with my husband and daughters helping to put together and deliver meals on Wednesdays and my mother making the desserts and cookies the day before.” Markle and her husband deliver to seniors in the Dansville, Springwater, and Wayland areas, about 185 meals in total. “I had, and still have, people reaching out to me through word of mouth,” recalled Markle. “Even some younger families who have lost their jobs and are struggling have reached out to me. There are many seniors in Dansville who usually do their own grocery shopping, but now, they have called me and asked if I could help them get their groceries and their prescriptions. Seniors are very delicate, and sometimes, they don’t know to whom they should reach out.” Helping so many people certainly keeps Markle very busy. “Some days, I leave my house at 6 AM, and I don’t get home until 10 o’clock at night,” she stated. “I am looking forward to this virus ending and this craziness stopping.” While she wishes there Tina Markle (right) with one were more people willing to help, of her clients (left)! Markle carries on because it is “her energy.” “I was born and raised in Dansville,” she shared. “My dad, who sadly passed away ten years ago, was the Postmaster in Dansville. It is definitely overwhelming at times, but you have to be 100% dedicated to helping people.” The senior community has been very grateful. “My gosh, some of the thank you letters I have gotten from people since this started!” she exclaimed. “One senior lady wrote, ‘You are definitely my angel.’ I always say that this is why I do this when I get those letters. They are really written from the heart.”

Enjoying games at Your Center in Dansville before COVID-19!
“People don’t realize how much of a difference a little act of kindness can make in someone’s life,” she continued. “Others may think our elderly are fine, but they are lonely and sad right now. Just to have someone to talk to, a phone number to call, is so important.” As long as there is need, Tina Markle plans to continue. “I am going to continue to provide free meals every Wednesday for as long as I can,” she said. “Any donations we receive are going into this effort. When we are able to reopen Your Center, seniors can come in again and enjoy a family-style meal and meet with others.” The pandemic has also been eye-opening for Markle. “I knew there was a need, but I didn’t know how big the need was,” she explained. “I have really realized how many people come to me, how many seniors are in need, and how many didn’t know about me. I am not a millionaire, but I set a budget for giving, and I do what I can.” Markle encourages others to reach out to their elderly friends, family and neighbors, especially now. “See if they need help, leave them a note with your number, just be there to listen,” she suggested. “Just doing these things does so much.” For more information, call Tina Markle at (585) 204-4272 or email yourcenter54@gmail.com. BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH ANIMAL TRAINERS
hslclivny1987@gmail.com
Animal trainers can address any type of behavior. According to the Animal Behavior Institute, trainers who work with dogs, cats, parrots, or other companion animals must have a thorough and detailed knowledge of animal behavior. Pet owners who have successfully housebroken puppies in the past may think they can do it again with relative ease, but no two puppies are the same. Techniques that worked with one dog will not necessarily work with another. Trainers recognize this and have an array of techniques within their arsenal, making them capable of addressing and correcting any type of behavior.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

When a Loose Dog Approaches DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This weekend while hiking with my daughter on a public trail, a big dog ran straight up to us and started barking fiercely. We were frightened and didn’t know what to do, so we stood still until the dog ran off. What should we have done instead? -- Paul in Lynn, Massachusetts DEAR PAUL: You and your daughter did the right thing by standing still when the dog approached. Running away or waving your arms may further excite a dog and incite an attack. Preventive Vet has an excellent post detailing what to do when approached by a strange dog, including common body language that can help you interpret whether the dog is relaxed, alert or feeling threatened (go to www.preventivevet.com and search for “off-leash dog”). Here are additional steps to take when approached: 1. Stay calm and observe the dog’s body language and behavior as it approaches. 2. Place your walking stick in front of you, between you and the dog. 3. If it comes close, put out a hand and say “Go home!” or “Sit!” 4. Startle a dog that doesn’t leave: Bang your stick against the ground (don’t wave or swing it) and yell “Go home!” Another recommendation is to carry dog treats on walks. If a loose dog approaches and won’t leave, toss a treat away from you (but in their line of sight) and when they go to eat it, calmly depart the area. Some owners will take issue with the idea of strangers tossing treats at their dog. But letting their dogs run off leash and out of view is risky to the dog and to other people, and just plain irresponsible. Ideally, dogs should be trained to stay within sight of their owners and well socialized to other humans; otherwise, they need to be on a leash.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Finding Fresh Food Many of us haven't been eating right lately. Sometimes the stores are out of what we want; sometimes we can't get an available pickup time. But there are a few other safe options for getting what we need. Community Supported Agriculture: Farmers near you like to know in advance if their crops will have a market once it's time to harvest, and they sell "subscriptions" that allow you, as a shareholder, to pick up fresh food once a week. Do an internet search for "community supported agriculture" in your area. Look for ones that sell more than just vegetables. Some also have eggs, butter, bread, jams, flowers and meat. Farm Stands: You'll see these along the road -- a small farmer or gardener who sells his produce at the end of the driveway out of a small stand. Stop and take a look, and ask questions. Most of them will have a limited variety, but it will all be fresh, probably picked just that morning. You might have to point to the items you want so they don't have people touching the food. That's a safety point you'll appreciate. Ask about other foods that will be available, and make it a point to stop by. And remember, no matter where you go, look for marks on the ground for places to stand six feet apart. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
Celebrating Father’s Day while social distancing To say that COVID-19 changed life as we know it would be an understatement. Many people likely never imagined how much their daily routines would be affected when this novel coronavirus was just a blip on the radar at the end of 2019. Social distancing may have become the new normal, but it doesn’t mean that holidays like Father’s Day have to be a washout. As evidenced by holidays that have already taken place amidst social distancing guidelines, people are finding creative ways to celebrate special occasions. Here are some ways to make Father’s Day special even while social distancing. · Turn to social apps. Virtual meeting applications, like Zoom, Skype and FaceTime provide invaluable opportunities to speak and connect face-to-face when in-person gatherings are not possible. They also can be used to break bread together or to play games or relay stories. · Deliver gifts. Take a few cues from the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus and plan to drop gifts and run. Seniors and people who have compromised immune systems are at a higher risk of contracting contagious illnesses. While it may be tempting to visit your father or grandfather in person, even a short visit could put his health at risk. Instead, leave gifts outside the house. For added fun, hide the gifts and provide scavenger hunt clues. · Dine out at home. If dining out was something you typically do on Father’s Day, replicate the experience at home. Try to recreate Dad’s favorite meal from the restaurant he loves or see if that restaurant offers curbside pickup. Transform the dining table into a restaurant table, or take the meal outdoors for some al fresco fun. Let kids serve as the wait staff. · Spend time together. One of the silver linings of social distancing is the opportunity for family members who reside under one roof to have more uninterrupted time together. Chances are having the kids nearby and sharing some stories and laughs together will be a perfect way for Dad to enjoy Father’s Day. With some creative thinking, dads across the county can still enjoy the special day they deserve. TF206039

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Native Southerners might well be surprised to learn that the word “y’all” dates to 1631! It was first used by the English scholar William Lisle in the sentence, “The captive men of strength I gave to you, the weaker sold; and this y’all know is true.”

GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Walk, run or ride to the gym. Many people get the bulk, if not the entirety, of their exercise at a gym. For those who live outside of major cities, that likely involves driving to and from a gym before and after workouts. Instead of driving, consider walking, running or riding to the gym. Each option provides great cardiovascular exercise that can reduce or replace the time people spend on treadmills or elliptical machines. And cutting back on driving reduces fuel consumption and auto emissions, greatly benefitting the planet.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Morning Stiffness Is Sign of Osteoarthritis --DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 67-year-old black female who’s been diagnosed with “a little arthritis” in my right hip. Now retired from a desk job, I unfortunately still am not getting enough exercise. My issue is that after sitting for a length of time, I’m in excruciating pain and can’t stand up at all. Once I straighten up and get moving, the pain subsides. I’ve been told “you’re getting old,” but I’m not old! I’m about 30 pounds overweight. Also, when I stand for any length of time, my lower back aches. Would taking a morning walk and a yoga class alleviate this problem? I’m so embarrassed when I get out of my car or get up from the dinner table. -- S.H. ANSWER: There are many types of arthritis, and the answer to your question varies a bit depending on type. I think you probably have the most common form, osteoarthritis, so I’m going to answer you assuming that’s the case. Stiffness in the morning, quickly relieved by exercise, is a hallmark of osteoarthritis. It’s common, treatable and not something to be embarrassed about. Exercise is an effective treatment for osteoarthritis. It can be difficult to get started, but the more people exercise, the more they are able to do. Walking and yoga both are excellent ideas, but the best exercise is the one you will want to keep doing. Osteoarthritis affects a fair number of 67-year-olds, but it’s important to remember that it’s not your age that is causing the pain: It’s the arthritis. Although we know of no treatments that can reverse the course of osteoarthritis, medications (including a few supplements), exercise and physical therapy all can ease symptoms and improve function. Losing weight takes stress off the joints and is recommended, but is not easy. Finally, severe arthritis can be treated surgically, with a joint replacement. That’s not a procedure to take lightly or have done too early. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m 85 years old. I have numbness in my hands -- sometimes the right, sometimes the left; sometimes both hands or not at all. It lasts only a while. My doctor feels that it’s a pinched nerve in my neck. Can you give me any advice? -- J.B. ANSWER: A pinched nerve in the neck becomes more prevalent as people age. The nerve can be compressed by bony structures in people with osteoarthritis in the neck (this is spinal stenosis), or by disk material in someone with a herniated disk. Having symptoms on both sides is less common than having symptoms consistently on one side only. A careful physical exam can give clues that this is the case, but an MRI or other imaging study is the best way to be sure of the diagnosis. Hand numbness also may be caused by the nerve being “pinched” in other locations: in the carpal tunnel in the wrist or in the cubital tunnel in the elbow. An EMG test can help sort out where this is coming from. It’s certainly possible to have carpal tunnel syndrome on both sides. My best advice is not to rush into surgery at any age, but especially not at age 85. Physical therapy can prevent many people from needing surgery. However, if numbness progresses to weakness, it’s time to reconsider. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Use proper form when exercising. Improper form can lead to injury and/or muscle fatigue. Men and women who cannot adhere to proper form when working out may need to reduce the amount of weight they’re lifting. As activities are performed using proper form, people may find they’re building muscle without growing fatigued. As workouts progress, weight can be added.

MEDICAL AUTHORITIES SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT PREDIABETES (NAPSI)—One in three American adults now has prediabetes—a serious condition that often leads to type 2 diabetes. Yet 90 percent of them don’t know it. The good news is that with early diagnosis, prediabetes can be reversed through healthy lifestyle changes. Learning your risk is simple: visit DoIHavePrediabetes.org and take the one-minute risk test. What Is Prediabetes? Prediabetes is when your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough yet to be considered type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes can also lead to other health issues like heart attack and stroke. The key risk factors for prediabetes include being overweight, being physically inactive, having a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes, or being over 40 years old. An Urgent Message More than 84 million Americans have prediabetes, and the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than tripled over the past 20 years. Type 2 diabetes prevention is such an urgent need for our nation that two leading health organizations, the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have partnered with the Ad Council to raise national awareness. Together, they have built resources that help people know their risk and learn how to reverse prediabetes. Do You Have Prediabetes? Go to DoIHavePrediabetes.org and take a simple one-minute risk test to know where you stand. If you receive a high score, the next step is to confirm the diagnosis with your doctor and ask how to enroll in CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program. CDC Programs Can Help With early diagnosis, prediabetes can be reversed—and the best thing people can do is to join the CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program. This scientifically proven program is available in person or online across the United States to help people make healthy changes. Trained professionals share ongoing support and tips to help stay on track with healthy eating, physical activity, stress reduction and more. Research shows that through the program, you can lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by as much as 58 percent (71 percent if you’re over age 60). Learn More: Learn more about prediabetes and find lifestyle tips and links to CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program at www.DoIHavePrediabetes.org.

1. How do I get rid of spiny sow thistle and Canada thistle? Anne B. Spiny sowthistle is a winter annual that is actually in the sunflower family and not a true thistle. Spiny sowthistle spreads by seed. It flowers from late spring through the summer, depending on the location. The flower is yellow, resembling a dandelion, but forms in a corymbiform cluster. The root of spiny sowthistle is a taproot. It is found in waste areas and other open areas such as roadsides and thin turf. It can be controlled by mowing which prevents the stem and
flowers from forming and eliminates seed formation. The plant can also be cut out. A postemergent herbicide application is effective when spiny sowthistle is young and actively growing but should not be needed if the location will be mowed. For best results, treat prior to bolting.
the first time by early June. Mowing or repeated cutting may be used to help prevent the production of seeds and starving the plant. Persistent removal of the shoots before they attain several leaves will exhaust the storage roots within two years and eliminate the weed. One study found a 21 day weeding schedule was optimal. Postemergent applications of a systemic herbicide may be used. Fall is typically the best time for these treatments when the plant is translocating
food reserves to the rooting structures. Other good times are during the early bolting stage when plants are 6-10” tall and during the bud to flowering stage. Some of the common lawn weed control materials are effective. Spot treatments are good for limited stands. Glyphosate products labeled for the use are effective. Lawns should be properly maintained to promote a healthy, dense turf that with managed mowing will compete well with weeds.
Canada Thistle is a rhizomatous perennial. Since Canada thistle has a deep root system, the only mechanical approach for controlling this weed is to exhaust the storage roots (exhaust perennial roots). Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

THE FLORIDA KEYS DELIVER EXPERIENCES UNLIKE ANYWHERE ELSE (NAPSI)—The most significant worldwide travel trend today is individuals’ desire for experiential travel. Gone is the era of ticking destinations off a “bucket list”; today’s traveler seeks personally transformative encounters with people and places that bring deeper meaning and lifelong memories to a vacation. The Florida Keys & Key West abound in unique experiences that can be found “Only in the Keys” throughout the 125-mile-long island chain. On a drive down the famed Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West you’ll enjoy the distinctive character of individual islands.
Magic Maze WORDS NAMED FOR PEOPLE
In Key Largo, take a 90-minute canal cruise on the African Queen, the original vessel from the 1951 film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. A registered national historic site, the boat looks much as it did on the silver screen. For a “hook and cook” experience in Islamorada, book a charter in the Sportfishing Capital of the World for exhilarating offshore, reef or backcountry fishing—then take your catch to a local restaurant to be prepared according to a signature local recipe. Encounter rescued sea turtles during a behind-the-scenes tour of the planet’s first licensed veterinary hospital for turtles. Located in Marathon, The Turtle Hospital rescues and rehabilitates sick and injured turtles and, whenever possible, releases them back into the ocean. West of Marathon, you’ll drive across the landmark Seven Mile Bridge, one of the world’s longest segmental bridges and the centerpiece of the iconic Florida Keys Overseas Highway. Discover tiny Key deer on Big Pine Key. Endangered Key deer live only in the Lower Keys and can be spotted grazing during early morning and at dusk. The 9,000-acre National Key Deer Refuge was established in 1957 to protect the diminutive deer and other indigenous wildlife. In Key West, explore history with former President Harry Truman and author Ernest Hemingway. The Harry S. Truman Little White House Museum is Florida’s only presidential museum. The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is where the writer lived and wrote masterpieces in the 1930s. Be sure to pet a descendant of Hemingway’s six-toed cat. Finally, take a selfie just 90 miles from Cuba at Key West’s red, black and yellow Southernmost Point marker that denotes the southernmost land mass in the continental United States. Excerpt from
Elpis Israel by John Thomas
WORDS NAMED FOR PEOPLE
When the “point of time” drew nigh for “the finishing of the transgression, the making an end of sin-offerings, the making reconciliation for iniquity, and the bringing in of everlasting righteousness” (Dan. 9:24), Jesus, who had been anointed the Most Holy, the sealed prophet of the Father, and fully confirmed as Messiah the Prince, selected one man of the twelve (who had the least reason to exalt himself above his brethren as “the prince of the apostles,”) as the depository of the keys of the Mysteries of the Kingdom of God. This highly honored individual was Simon Peter, son of Jonas, who denied his master with oaths and curses. But being converted, and restored to favor by his gracious Lord, he was prepared to be the unaspiring “servant of the least;” and to strengthen his brethren in all the trials and afflictions they were called upon to endure for the truth’s sake. “I will give unto thee, Simon Bar-jona,” said the king, “the keys of the kingdom of God; and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Matt. 16:19). Here was an appointment of Peter in a special sense to the particular function of binding and loosing men on earth.

Remote learning requires the cooperation of school staff and also parents and guardians. Patience is necessary, and parents and educators may need to completely transform their daily schedules.
The following tips can be an asset as students continue to navigate remote learning. KEEP A SCHEDULE. It’s easy to begin to sleep late and fall out of routine when not required to go to a school building. Families should make scheduling a priority, which can help students stay on top of lessons and complete their assignments on time.

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.
“Economy is the art of making the most of life. The love of economy is the root of all virtue...” ~ George Bernard Shaw Maybe you never thought of “economy” as anything except scrimping and doing without. Actually, as Shaw tells us, we economize in order to conserve our assets. Thus we are able to derive even greater pleasure at some future time. We can practice economy in the use of our time as well as with our money. We expend our time and money where benefits are the greatest, which gives us the most out of life. Being economical does not have to mean being unhappy, as we learn when we practice it. Many people find comfort in pre-arranging their own funeral service. This relieves loved ones of the need to make painful decisions under emotional stress. Let our staff explain other advantages, too.

In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).
