NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “It’s easy to get the stains out of coffee mugs without using a harsh cleaner. Try a little bit of baking soda on a sponge for scrubbing, then rinse with a little bit of vinegar to foam out the smell. I have been able to bring back mugs that looked terrible!” -- Y.S. in California * Use a lint roller to remove dust from a lampshade with fabric that is flat but textured. If your lampshade has pleats, your best bet is a clean soft paintbrush. * “I have perfectly timed the fabric softener cycle on my washing machine. I set a timer for 23 minutes, and it’s just the right time to add liquid softener. Just saying that this has greatly enhanced the quality of my life, because my clothes feel softer and smell nice.” -- L.B. in Georgia * Here’s another laundry tip: “Can you believe I miss washing my daughter’s white softball pants because spring season was canceled? If you have a kid playing sports in white pants -- why? -- get a bar of Fels Naptha soap. You just rub it into the stained spots, and launder. It takes out grass and clay. It should be issued with the uniform for turf sports.” -- M. * A work from home, or work anywhere tip: If you are having trouble focusing, it might be because you are avoiding a difficult task. If there’s a dreaded task on your to-do list, tackle it first. Even if you can’t get it completed, you’ll make progress and it will make everything else seem easy by comparison. Hurricane Technologies Residential Support Since August of 2002, Hurricane has been providing computer and technology support to residential and commercial customers. Over the past 10 years, our business has been shifting toward serving mostly commercial customers in the region. The COVID-19 quarantine had forced us to stop serving the needs of our residential customers, and we have made the difficult decision to keep that portion of our business closed indefinitely. We have been proud to support the residents of our community over the years and look forward to a new chapter of focusing on supporting the businesses that serve our residents. Many thanks to our loyal residential customers for the continued support over the years! Tom Vonglis, President Hurricane Technologies, Inc.

53 Genesee Street, Avon • 226-2526 • www.hurritech.com

I would like to thank Tom who noticed my ad for a nice Small Business opportunity, who gave me a heads up, of laws in NYS (sinkers). Thanks again, R. Dupuis Every year, I get my lawn rolled. I want to thank both Nate and his father Kevin Harding. They not only do a good job, but they are also very nice. In this world, where it has become increasingly harder and harder to meet people who are considerate and personable,

In response to the person who wrote that they felt like they lived next to the Addams Family because their neighbors’ yard was overcome with buttercups and the grass is not cut the way they thought it should be: Really? Really? People are dying with the coronavirus daily, unable to breathe, and you are complaining about your neighbors’ grass? I pray you wake up soon to what really matters such as the Bible states--to love your neighbor as yourself--and pray for suffering neighbors all over the world. In response to Not Ego. The governor made it plain as

it is a delight to know Kevin and Nate. It is a plus when you find someone who not only does a job well done, but who also has a very nice disposition to go along with it. In all the years that Kevin and Nate have rolled my lawn, they have always been so kind to me, as well. Every spring I can rest assured that they will be by to do my lawn. That is how dependable they are. Thank you both so much! I really appreciate the both of you! Thank you to Green Renewable in Manchester. They donated thousands of bags of mulch, potting soil, and fertilizer to local residents. The donation of these items has helped to beautify our communities and was certainly very much appreciated. Thank you, Green Renewable, for your generosity!

could be today while he was in Rochester. It’s shear foolishness not to wear a mask when there is a strong possibility that you will be near someone. If you are walking alone in the woods, fine, no mask required. However, if you get where you may be in contact with someone, then by all means, you should be wearing a mask. How disrespectful to all the hard-working people in the medical field to be so unwilling to do so. They risk their own lives to save others. There were people in a parking lot the other day, in close proximity to one another. No masks! The governor was asked if people should be fined if not wearing a mask. He said, “Yes.” So, the person who wrote the original Rant did get the facts right. I suggest you do the same! In our town a family has moved out and left their cats. They come to my house and get my cat all upset. I know who you are. Also,

I was excited when I saw that I can now subscribe to have the Penny Saver mailed to me each week with my mail. I have been running out to the store first thing on Friday morning to make sure I pick up a copy of the Penny Saver before they are all taken. It is great to know I will not need to do that any longer, especially when the weather in the winter is bad. Thank you so much for starting this subscription service! Thank you to all the state, county, and town and village policemen and women. We appreciate the risks you take every day to keep us all safe. Protest is one of the most American acts in which a citizen can engage. The “freedom to assemble” and “redress of grievances” is right there in the First

you do not feed them. They are feral by now. Cannot get near them. The one grey tiger is now limping on three legs. Do I have to call Animal Control and give your name? This is abandonment, animal cruelty! I feel so sorry for them. I cannot take them in. As I did one time with one of your cats which was a grey tiger. I even saw another one of your so-called pets get hit right in front of me and killed. Please take care of these animals. Their your responsibility! At least take the one to the vet. As I cannot catch them! This is cruel. They are God’s creatures too! This has been going on too long. I was told you were trying to catch them but see they are still around. Take care of them. This is in response to the post Messy Lawns. I suggest you read the post in its entirety. It was in response to another post. It was encouraging them to keep up with their yard no matter what, because that is the right thing to do even if

Amendment. Of course, we should condemn any violence, but 99% of the protesters are completely peaceful. When the protest is for something as universally beneficial as racial justice, then those who stand up for what’s right should be regarded as heroes, just like the Abolitionists, Suffragettes, and Civil Rights activists of the past. Heck, the American Revolution was one big protest against injustice! Of the few hundred people at a protest in [local town], everyone was respectful, peaceful, and wore masks. Let’s take hold of this opportunity to improve our society together! I always enjoy driving around the Avon circle in the summertime. Again, this year, the Avon Garden Club has done a beautiful job in making our park and surrounding islands a masterpiece of color and beauty! Thank you!

others don’t. It was also showing, how others, like myself, have to contend with neighbor’s who just don’t take care of their lawns and yard. So, read the post again to get the true meaning before firing off on someone. The Governor said it loud and clear; when a person wears a mask, they are saying that they respect the other person. They respect the first responders, physicians, nurses, etc., who have been killing themselves to help others. It was said short but sweet, without any room for opinions. Medical professionals are not superheroes. They take care of those with COVID-19, yet they, for the most part, stay well. The Governor said it’s because of the masks and gowns. A mask is a necessary precaution. There is so much posted about liberty. Respect others! That’s what it should be about.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring. AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Maintain good posture. Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens. When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries. Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture. Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist.

By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

CONTROL CRABGRASS BEFORE IT APPEARS Emphasize uniform application. If a herbicide is not applied uniformly across the lawn, crabgrass can establish itself and ultimately spread to the rest of the lawn.

Even though chimneys do not require daily upkeep, regular maintenance efforts help chimneys operate safely and prevent deaths and injuries while protecting homes from fire. Various problems can arise when chimneys are not well maintained. Such problems include chimney fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and early failure of the chimney and heating sources that the chimney vents. Carbon monoxide can be scary, as it is virtually invisible without a proper detector. The National Vital Statistics System says that, in 2015, 393 deaths resulted from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning in the United States. When carbon monoxide is breathed in, it builds up quickly and combines with the blood, reducing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. The Canada Safety Council says that body tissue and cells can’t function without oxygen. Chimney fires are another potential byproduct of poor chimney maintenance. The Chimney Safety Institute of America notes that chimneys expel the byproducts of combustion, including smoke, water vapor, gases, unburned wood particles, hydrocarbon, tar fog, and assorted minerals, which can condense on the inside of the chimney flue. The residue, called creosote, is highly combustible. With the right conditions, a chimney fire can occur.

Men and women who still have a hop in their step can sign up to compete in adult sports leagues. Depending on the sport, leagues might be available to adults of various ages and skill levels, and some may even be more focused on fun than competition. SENIOR NEWS LINE

Cancer and COVID-19

By Matilda Charles

Keep Your Spirits Up Depending where we live, many of us are still in lockdown. Still, there are ways to keep our spirits up. Plants can make all the difference in how we feel in our environment. Check your local nursery's website for small plants you can either have delivered or pick up at the curb. Some of the easiest to grow are pothos, spider plant and philodendron. Beware, however, if you have pets. Be sure you can either hang up your plant or put it up on a bookcase where the pet can't reach it. Books we enjoyed a long time ago can take us back to a time and place that was calm and safe. Look on your own bookshelves or consider getting an e-reader if you don't want to take a chance going into your own library, assuming it's open. Baking can fill the house with lovely smells. Since finding flour is impossible in many parts of the country, look online for hundreds of recipes that don't require flour. No-flour banana bread, flourless chocolate cake ... you can even make oatmeal muffins. Just be certain you can acquire all the ingredients before you set your heart on making a recipe. Zoom is the online conference program that so many companies are using for business meetings. We can learn Zoom, too, and stay in touch with family and friends if we have a computer or device with a camera. Explore the basic free version of Zoom. You'll be limited to 40 minutes in group meetings, with no limit on one-toone meetings. Your first step will be to read online instructions and get comfortable with the steps to set up a connection. Your second step will be to tell family and friends you're ready to start Zooming! (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

The COVID-19 outbreak of 2020 caught many people, particularly those in the western hemisphere, off guard. As the virus spread, the lives of hundreds of millions of people throughout North America and Europe changed dramatically and seemingly overnight, prompting many to wonder if they or their loved ones were going to get sick. No one was thought to be immune to COVID-19, though many people were unfortunately believed to be more vulnerable to the disease than others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults and people with serious chronic medical conditions are at the greatest risk of getting sick from COVID-19. The American Cancer Society notes that cancer patients, like groups with an elevated risk of getting sick from COVID-19, must do all they can to avoid being exposed to the virus. That’s because the immune systems of cancer patients, particularly those in active chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant patients, can be severely weakened. In fact, in March 2020 officials with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center warned that early data from China and Italy, two countries which experienced early and widespread outbreaks of the disease, indicated that cancer patients would be at increased risk of getting the virus. Are all cancer patients at risk? Dr. Steve Pergram, the medical director of infection prevention at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, said that patients with blood malignancies are most at risk for COVID-19. Blood malignancies include non-Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and multiple myeloma. While people with these forms of cancer may be most at risk of getting COVID-19, it’s important to note that all cancer patients, including those who recently concluded treatment, are vulnerable. Those who concluded treatment should know that the aftereffects of treatment can linger long after treatment programs have ended, and those aftereffects may continue to compromise patients’ immune systems. What can cancer patients do to protect themselves from COVID-19? Cancer patients should embrace the safety protocols recommended by the CDC, including social distancing measures and limiting direct contact with other people. Seniors in cancer treatment should take advantages of opportunities to limit their exposure to COVID-19, such as visiting grocery stores during seniors-only hours and opting to participate in digital religious services instead of in-person services. In addition, patients can work with their cancer care teams to devise ways to continue receiving treatment without elevating their risk of exposure to COVID-19.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Alcatraz was the only prison to offer its inmates hot showers, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that had anything to do with showing kindness to the prisoners. Rather, the assumption was that if they were used to hot shower water, they’d be unable to cope with the frigid waters of the San Francisco Bay and deterred from an escape attempt.

Livingston County Economic Development Director, Bill Bacon, Sees Hopeful Future BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

Dansville public school teacher, was started to help restaurants during COVID-19, giving them a space to post about their menus.

“COVID-19 has caused business owners to rethink the way they do business,” stated Bill Bacon, Director of the Livingston County Economic Development, also referred to as the Livingston County Development Corporation (LCDC). The LCDC aims to encourage “transformative growth” within the local economy. According to Bacon, this isn’t just about the shutdown.

“Within two to three weeks, the page had over 5,000 followers,” Bacon continued. “The comments were unbelievably positive and supportive. People began seeing what is offered throughout the county and where, and others started asking for recommendations. It became engaging and interactive and took off like wildfire.”

here is little doubt that COVID-19 created one of the most challenging economic upheavals our country has experienced in well over half a century, and New York State has felt its effects, perhaps more than most. Several businesses, caught by surprise, scrambled to find ways to continue operating beyond their physical locations. Many of them have adapted and survived with plans to reopen stronger than ever.

“This is about figuring out how to serve customers if they cannot be inside your business,” he explained. “This is about figuring out how to reach customers, how to stay in contact with existing customers, and how to do business online and create a digital presence.” Admittedly, this is also about being prepared if a shutdown were to happen again. “Business owners are rethinking the financial aspects of businesses,” said Bacon. “They are thinking about the amount of capital they should have to weather downturns and crises. Struggles struck them on many fronts, from laying off employees and dealing with product spoilage to being unable to socialize with their customers. For some, this has been a nightmare realized.” Even so, Bacon believes Livingston County businesses can recover quickly, bouncing back even stronger. “I believe many people are ready to get out again, to shop and dine out,” he said. “People are understandably more cautious and safety conscious, and the LCDC urges business owners to show their customers that they have considered their safety during the reopening process.” The LCDC will continue to provide guidance and support throughout the reopening phases, yet it, too, is evolving. “At first, our goal was about information, conveying what we were able to gain from the state and making sure people knew where to go,” Bacon recalled. “We were providing guidance with the financial assistance coming out, what was essential and nonessential, and on into Phase I. Information was constantly changing.” As businesses began reopening in Phase I and Phase II, the LCDC’s focus shifted. “We needed to get short term capital to businesses in need of emergency funds,” Bacon continued. “So, we created small loans for them through our company, which we are still offering. As a county, our metrics are in good shape, and we are managing this crisis well. We are moving into higher phases, and we want local businesses to be ready.” If community support throughout this pandemic is an indication, area businesses have little to worry about. “We have seen incredible support for local eateries through the Livingston County Menus Facebook page,” Bacon shared. Livingston County Menus, a social media page created by a

As the county continues reopening, Bacon and the LCDC encourage everyone to support local businesses. “The best thing we can do to promote Livingston County Economic economic recovery is to think local first in any instance whatsoever,” he said. Development Director, Bill Bacon “Before you shop, ask yourself if you can make your purchases at independent businesses. These mom-and-pop places were the ones which had to close. It is worth an extra dollar or two to support them, keeping our Main Streets beautiful and our neighborhood economies strong.” Encouraging people to engage in downtown areas, the LCDC plans to implement its Inspirations Trail starting on July 1st. “The trail will have 70+ works of art in our communities, painted by local artists,” explained Bacon. “These are planned to be highly visible, displayed in retail stores, in storefront windows, restaurants and other businesses in Livingston County. Each has an accompanying quote, and our hope is to inspire while you admire.” Learn more at www.inspirationstrail.com. “I can’t see the future, but I do believe that as we come out of this crisis, Livingston County will be in a strong position for growth,” stated Bacon. “More people may now have the option to work from home, and they may be looking to leave urban atmospheres for cleaner air and great vistas. As many seek a happier, more fulfilling life, our county remains well positioned to provide one.” Enjoy this article? HORSESHOE SOLAR ENERGY LLC Livingston and Monroe Counties, New York NOTICE OF FILING OF APPLICATION Horseshoe Solar Energy LLC (Applicant or HSS), an affiliate of Invenergy Renewables LLC, is proposing to construct a solar photovoltaic electric generating facility (Facility) which will require a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (CECPN) issued pursuant to Article 10 of the New York Public Service Law (PSL). On or about June 24, 2020, HSS will file an Application pursuant to PSL Section 164 and 16 NYCRR 1000.6 for a CECPN with the New York State Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Environment (Siting Board) authorizing the construction and operation of the Facility. The Application will be filed in Siting Board Case 18-F-0633.

Corporation (d/b/a National Grid) (National Grid). The POI is planned to be at National Grid’s 115-kV Golah Substation. As a contingency, HSS has acquired property rights along National Grid’s 115-kV Golah-Mumford transmission line, approximately two miles west of Golah Substation, to locate the POI. The physical configuration of the alternative POI would be a new 3-breaker ring bus (the “alternate POI Switchyard”) adjacent to the existing transmission line, which HSS would construct and transfer to National Grid upon completion of testing. The Collection Substation would be constructed adjacent to the alternate POI Switchyard. In the event the alternative POI is selected, the Facility Site will be adjusted accordingly to include the required interconnection facilities.

avian species; impacts to forested land and wetlands. Other potential impacts commonly attributed to utility-scale solar energy facilities include visual impacts and traffic during construction. The Applicant has designed the Facility layout to meet applicable standards in these areas and to minimize environmental impacts to the maximum extent practicable.

as needed. After hearings, the parties may brief their positions and the Hearing Examiner will issue a recommended decision upon which the Siting Board will base its decision. Article 10 requires that all proceedings on the Application, including a final decision by the Siting Board, be completed within 12 months of the date the Application is determined to be complete.

The Applicant will also submit a request for a Water Quality Certification (WQC) under Section 401 of the federal Clean Water Act, a prerequisite to obtaining a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the minor disturbance to federally regulated wetlands required to construct the Facility.

The record of this proceeding, including the Application, may be examined during normal business hours at the Offices of the New York State Department of Public Service (DPS) at 3 Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY 12223, and may also be viewed at the following public repositories:

Pursuant to the Article 10 process, the Applicant filed a Preliminary Scoping Statement (PSS) with the Siting Board on March 13, 2019. Thereafter, the public had an opportunity to submit comments on the PSS. Following the comment period, the Applicant prepared a summary of the material comments and submitted its reply on May 7, 2019. On May 9, 2019, a pre-application conference to consider intervenor funding requests was held. On June 6, 2019, HSS provided notice of consultations to discuss the contents of the Application to a broad list of potential stakeholders. Updated PSS Figures were filed on October 10, 2019. HSS hosted several telephone conferences between July 15, 2019 and November 6, 2019, to solicit input from stakeholders concerning the content of the Application. HSS is now ready to file an Application. The Application includes, among other things: an analysis of the environmental setting of the Facility; a description of the Facility including preliminary design drawings and related information; an assessment of potential land use, environmental and health impacts from construction and operation of the Facility; descriptions of the environmental, economic and other benefits of the Facility; results of studies conducted to prepare the Application, including preconstruction studies to assess potential impacts to avian and bat species; proposed measures to minimize environmental impacts; and a consideration of potential alternatives to the Facility. The Application also addresses consistency with State energy planning objectives, including climate change and renewable energy goals and potential concerns about public health and safety; terrestrial ecology, water resources and aquatic ecology; communications, transportation and utilities; cultural, historical and recreational resources; visual impacts, sound impacts; electric magnetic fields; and impacts on the statewide electrical system. The Article 10 regulations outlining the required contents of the Application can be found at 16 NYCRR 1001.1 et seq. This notice is being provided in accordance with 16 NYCRR 1000.7 and will be published at least three (3) days prior to the filing of the Application. A copy of the Application will be served on the Chief Executive Officer of each municipality in which any portion of the Facility is located, as well as those persons and agencies enumerated in 16 NYCRR 1000.6.

The Facility will generate electricity from solar energy, a renewable energy source, reducing air emissions and the use of water resources associated with electricity generation. The Facility will assist the State in meeting the goals of the State Energy Plan, which include obtaining 70% of electricity consumed in the State from renewable sources by 2030 and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Other positive impacts include diversification of energy supplies, new employment opportunities (both temporary construction employment and full-time jobs), increased revenues to county and municipal governments, revenue to the local hospitality industry, and purchase of local supplies and goods. The construction and operation of the Facility may result in minor environmental impacts, including impacts to terrestrial ecology; water resources and aquatic ecology; agricultural resources; transportation and utilities; cultural, historical, and recreational resources; impacts to

With the Application, HSS will deposit $180,000.00 to be disbursed by the Siting Board to municipalities and other local parties to help pay expenses, including attorney and consultant fees, associated with participating in the Application review process. Fifty percent (50%) of these intervenor funds are reserved for municipalities. Once the Application is filed and determined by the Siting Board to be complete, the Siting Board will schedule a public hearing on the Application. The Siting Board will also issue a notice of availability of intervenor funds to be used by municipalities and local parties to participate in formal review of the Application. Requests for funds must be submitted to the Hearing Examiner within thirty (30) days after the issuance of the notice of the availability of intervenor funds. A pre-hearing conference will be scheduled by the Hearing Examiner to identify intervenors, award intervenor funds, identify issues for the hearing, and establish a case schedule. Additional hearings regarding the Application and project impact assessments will be scheduled by the Hearing Examiner

Any interested member of the public may file a request with the DPS Secretary to receive copies of all notices concerning the Facility. Written requests should be sent to the DPS Secretary at secretary@dps.ny.gov or sent by mail to the following address: Honorable Michelle L. When we come to see what the keys of the Mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven are, we shall see at once, that the very use of them for the first time operates upon Peter’s own possession of them, as the telling of a secret to all the world does upon his power over it afterwards by whom it was told. Had Peter, instead of using the keys, hid them till his death-hour, and then imparted them to a single person, this individual might truly be said to have “succeeded to the keys.” But this he did not, dared not, do. He communicated them to such multitudes of Jews and Gentiles, that they became the common property of the world.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada. COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT

Look No Further For Reliable Appliance Service!

(NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys.

Call Joe Appliance Sales & Service

COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs.

10 Main Street, Bloomfield 585-394-1880 • 585-657-4470 Sales/Service/Parts Servicing most brands for 43 years.

In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage. “A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.” Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis. If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive. Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19. More poll results The poll also found:

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Rare Disease Causes Hard-to-Diagnose Rash --DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter was diagnosed with lymphomatoid papulosis. It’s not a bad case, but it’s enough to make me worry. I know it’s rare for this to turn into cancer, but there is always a chance. Doctors often misdiagnose it, but thankfully I have the best pathologist in the world. My daughter is being treated with UVB light, which worked in the past, but now is not helping. I don’t want to do methotrexate. I worry about every dot that pops up on her, and if it doesn’t go away, I think the worst. -- M.W.M. ANSWER: Lymphomatoid papulosis is a rare disease, most common in people in their 40s, but can happen in children and older adults as well. The cause is unknown, and although a virus is suspected, it hasn’t been found. It is not contagious. The rash of LyP is not specific and needs to be confirmed through biopsy. Spots are relatively large (but less than an inch), and usually red but with a white center that can turn black. The rash comes and goes. A skilled pathologist in combination with an experienced dermatologist is necessary to make the diagnosis. Adults are treated with methotrexate if the lesions are in a cosmetically important area, especially the face. UVA light is better studied than UVB light, especially in children, but an expert would be the most appropriate to recommend the best treatment. Your concern about cancer is understandable. Rates of associated cancer -- specifically, lymphoma, a blood and bone marrow cancer -- have been reported in 5% to 50% of people with LyP. Unfortunately, apart from people with a specific gene rearrangement, there’s no way yet known to predict who is likely to get lymphoma nor any way of preventing it. She will need to be vigilant. Fortunately, the lymphomas, if they do develop, are usually effectively treated. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently opened up some stored tuna

that my son had saved for me. He loves to hunt his own food. When I ate it, I realized that when he had gone to Alaska, he had not only hunted tuna but also black bear. He had used the black bear grease to cure the tuna. I was mortified that he had used a protected animal to preserve his tuna. I reluctantly ate it anyway. Now, I am worried about my health. Will anything happen to me health-wise because I have eaten the grease from a black bear from Alaska? The bear was wild, so could it have had a disease, like rabies? I’m sure it has never been vaccinated. -- Anon. ANSWER: Black bears are hunted in many states, and although it is regulated (you need a license) in Alaska, they are not a protected species under the Endangered Species Act. Black bears are hunted for both sport and meat. The major health risk from consuming bear meat is trichinella, a muscle parasite. The meat must be heated to a high temperature to be sure of killing the parasite. Grease from the bear should not have trichinella risk. Another concern is rabies. Rabies is possible but rare in bears. I doubt it could be transmitted from grease, though, as rabies virus lives in nervous tissue, not fat. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

DID YOU KNOW? Testicular cancer is not common, but it does affect about one out of every 250 males at some point in their lifetimes, states the American Cancer Society. The average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33. Unfortunately, the rate of testicular cancer, at least in the United States, increased over the last several decades, particularly in seminomas. It is important to note that testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully, so the risk of dying from the disease is very low. Still, it is important to discuss risk factors with one’s doctor, alerting physicians to any abnormalities in the testes or during urination, which may indicate a problem.

Happy Father’s Day! Guys, you’re great at teaching life lessons and taking care of others. It’s important to take care of yourself by getting the appropriate cancer screenings so you’re around for other special teachable moments.

Will lavender grow in and around small stones if it has some soil under it? Lavender is a sun worshiper, loves heat, and grows best in infertile, welldrained and slightly alkaline soil. Of course, lavender plants need soil, but will do just fine in an area where there are many small stones. Avoid heavy clay soil that does not drain well. Plant in the spring when danger of frost has passed, mixing some compost into the soil to get your plants off to a good start. Some lavender growers recommend putting a layer of crushed oyster shells or limestone

in the bottom of the planting hole to improve drainage and to increase the alkalinity of the soil. Also, some suggest mulching around lavender plants with pea sized gravel. The theme, good drainage is essential. Fertilize sparingly or you will get leaves at the expense of flowers. Lavender thrives in dry conditions so be careful not to overwater to prevent root rot. Also, dry heat helps to release lavender’s strong and wonderful fragrance and because of that aroma, deer generally stay away.

Garden stores generally stock two cultivars, ‘Hidcote’ with silvery foliage and deep purple flowers and ‘Munstead’ with green foliage and a violet or blue-purple flower. In the past few years, one called ‘SuperBlue’ has become more popular and is one that I find does very well here. It is a little shorter and heavier blooming cultivar than the two mentioned above. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

Because We Care

Richard B. Hensler June 6, 2020

by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

Canandaigua/Bloomfield- Richard B. Hensler, age 79, passed away on June 6, 2020.

MAKE YOUR WISHES KNOWN

Richard was born in Rochester to Bernard and Mary and predeceased by his brother, Gerald. He grew up in Irondequoit and attended St. Thomas the Apostle, Aquinas High School and Alfred State College. He worked at Onondaga Litho and Southco.

Many individuals think that “advance directives” are a good idea, but are not urgently needed, and their family or physician will somehow know their wishes. Unfortunately, this line of thinking often leads to unnecessary stress and complications. The directive known as a “living will” clearly points out the kind of life-sustaining medical treatment(s) that a person would or would not want if he or she could not speak for him- or herself. Documents of this type should be on file with an attorney or trusted family member or friend. Another directive, known as a “medical power of attorney,” allows a select person to be an agent of the non-responsive person and make decisions about his or her care.

Richard enjoyed walks along Canandaigua Lake, birdwatching, his daily visits to Wegmans and McDonald’s and playing the Lotto. He watched the Yankees and NASCAR. He loved car shows, music, sailing, and spending time at Marble Lake, but most of all spending time with his family. He had a gentle spirt and a big heart with a great sense of humor and enjoyed being around people. He taught us you may not be able to control every situation in life, but you can control your attitude and how you deal with it. Richard believed in always being humble and kind.

Death is inevitable, and the more we can prepare for it, the easier it is for those we leave behind. Pre-need funeral plans can be made at any time and offer many advantages. Funeral homes can help you preplan a funeral for yourself, your spouse, or a parent. If you would like to learn more about the funeral services KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME offers, please call us today at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY.

Richard was a wonderful and special father and grandfather. He is survived by his three children, Timothy (Penny), Carol (Michael) Dotterweich, and Christine; six grandchildren, Morgan and Courtney Lyon, Ryan Dotterweich, Noelle, Clarissa, and Owen Hensler. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen (Max) Albertson and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Contributions can be made to Golisano Children’s Hospital and Foodlinkny.org in memory of Richard Hensler. Private burial at the convenience of family. Plans for a celebration of life will be determined at a future date.

Angelo James “Chico” Vattimo June 10, 2020 Angelo James “Chico” Vattimo passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 10, 2020 surrounded by his family with his favorite music playing to keep him comfortable. He leaves his beloved wife of 63 years behind, Mary LoVerde Vattimo, as well as his three children, Michele (Rick) Cassada, sons, John Vattimo and Rick Vattimo. He is also survived by his last living sibling, Minnie Fusco of Avon. He was the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren: Jake and Casey Vattimo, Erin, Jessie, Ryan and Sean Vattimo, Brandon, Damon and Nicholas Cassada, Sarah, Cheyenne, Holly and Heidi. He was predeceased by his second child, Angelo James Vattimo in 1959 as well as eight siblings, Joseph “Hipper,” Mary “My Sister Mary,” Josephine, Frank “Ruff,” Patsy, Mark “Monk,” James and Sam. He was fiercely proud of his family and took pride in every one of them, devoting his life to taking care of them and the memories of his parents and siblings. Born in Little Italy in Retsof on September 5th, 1931, he was a graduate of York Central School as well an US Air Force Veteran of the Korean War. He spent over 40 years working at Specialized Printed Forms in Caledonia, rarely missing a day. He played the harmonica and handicapped horses like no other and was a master storyteller sharing old memories of family and friends. His favorite pastime was simply sitting and enjoying time and conversation with his family and friends. Family gathered for his Funeral Mass Monday, June 15, 2020 at St. Lucy’s Church in Retsof, where he served as an altar boy in the 1930’s. He was laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Geneseo. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest family and friends donate in Chico’s name to Little Italy Nature Preserve, 2428 Peoria Rd., Leicester, NY 14481, dedicated to preserving the area in Retsof where the Vattimo’s and other Italian immigrant families settled in the early 1900’s. His other favorite charity was St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, PO Box 1000, Memphis, TN 38101.

Fostering a Pet vs. Adopting DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is the difference between pet adoption and fostering? -- Jess in Knoxville DEAR JESS: An adopted pet is going to his or her forever home, a successful story every animal shelter wants to see replay again and again. But many pets aren’t quite ready to be adopted. They may be too young. They may be recovering from abuse and injuries. They may need to be observed to figure out what home environment is best for them. Sometimes, a shelter runs out of space. And some rescue organizations don’t have shelter facilities at all. In all these circumstances, this is where foster families come into play. A foster is a temporary arrangement, either for a predetermined amount of time or until a pet is adopted. Rather than being stuck in a chilly kennel with little interaction, a foster pet stays in a warm, loving home -- an arrangement that vastly reduces their stress and helps them heal. Some pets are never ready for adoption and remain a foster for the rest of their life. Others are adopted by the foster family if approved by the rescue organization. Caring for a foster pet takes dedication, and it helps to have experience caring for pets. If you’re interested in being a foster parent to a pet, check with the local shelter or rescue group. They will have an application for you to fill out, and then will evaluate you and your living space to determine if you are a good fit for the foster program and which pets would do best in your care.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress. The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers. Page 51
