INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS Some retired racing greyhounds may exhibit behaviors typical of puppies. The Greyhound Project notes that, thanks to their early training, retired racing greyhounds have never been without the company of other greyhounds. As a result, when spending time alone for the first time in their lives, retired greyhounds may make up for lost time as a puppy by exhibiting puppy-like behaviors such as chewing. This need not cause alarm in new greyhound parents, as the dogs typically outgrow the behavior very quickly.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Explore poaching, broiling and grilling. Poaching, broiling and grilling are three healthy alternatives to frying. Broiling and grilling expose food to direct heat, so it is a fast method of cooking and may not be appropriate for foods that require longer cooking times to tenderize. Poaching is the process of simmering foods in water or another flavorful liquid.

HOMETOWN TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

1.

At-Home Allergy Shots? The Risk Is Too High --DEAR DR. ROACH: After giving myself allergy shots at home for years, my allergy doctor’s group has decided that it’s too dangerous for patients to do this anymore. The allergy practice will no longer send a vial unless you can prove the shot will be given in a medical facility. Even if you are a nurse or doctor yourself, you still must prove that the shot will be given in a medical facility! Of course, there is a charge per shot if you drive across town to have the allergy practice’s nurse give it. Not long after getting this notice, I read an article about a local child who has improved an insulin injection device. After the alteration, several more doses could be extracted. The article also mentioned children being able to give themselves insulin shots at school! This is such an obvious money grab. How can it be safe for children to give themselves insulin at school but too dangerous for adults to give themselves shots at home? Do you know any reason for this change of policy for giving shots other than docs who can’t get more patients, so they bleed the ones they have dry? -- P.S. ANSWER: Insulin therapy is very different from allergy shots. Insulin is routinely given at home, work and school, and is very safe. The difference with an allergy shot is that you are getting a substance you are known to be allergic to. Comparatively, there is a significant risk of an allergic reaction. Only 3% to 5% of people getting allergy immunotherapy will have a systemic reaction, and only 1 out of 5,000 shots or so will require epinephrine. That might not sound like a high risk, but for a busy allergy clinic, that means about one person per month. The epinephrine is used to both treat and prevent life-threatening reactions. The guidelines from allergy experts clearly state that injections must be given under qualified medical supervision. Your doctor’s group was not following the standard of care before. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you mentioned that your smartwatch warns you every hour to stand up. Is this a good idea? What else is it good for? -- D.K. ANSWER: The evidence that standing periodically has health benefits is fair. One study showed that when people did lightintensity activity (such as walking) for two minutes a day instead of sitting, premature death rates were reduced. Prolonged sitting is associated with heart disease, diabetes and overall cancer rates. The evidence isn’t definitive, but it’s suggestive enough that I do get up and walk around (when I can) when my watch reminds me that I’ve been sitting for a long time. It’s not 100% clear that exercise trackers like pedometers and more advanced devices, such as a smartwatch, increase activity for everyone. It clearly does motivate me. I think it’s a personal decision that needs to be made based on whether you need more exercise (nearly everyone would benefit) and whether it would be motivating. I will say that, for many people, the social aspects of it do get some people to exercise more than they would have otherwise. Some devices let you see your friends’ activity and engage in friendly competition and support. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. By reading the scriptures I am so renewed that all nature seems renewed around me and with me. The sky seems to be a pure, a cooler blue, the trees a deeper green. The whole world is charged with the glory of God and I feel fire and music under my feet. ~Thomas Merton

by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

WHO DECIDES If a person dies without having made their funeral and burial preferences legally known, the decision rests with the nearest relative. If the next-of-kin is unavailable or unable to make the decision, the next of kin hierarchy is followed, until someone is found. This line of individuals, who must be 18 years old or older, proceeds downward from spouse/domestic partner, to children, parents, siblings, authorized guardian, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, grandparents, aunts and uncles, first cousins, great-grandchildren of grandparents, second cousins, and lastly, a fiduciary (a legally appointed trustee). Some states allow a close friend who is acquainted with the deceasedís wishes to qualify as next of kin if no one else is able or available.

Roger D. Trescott June 11, 2020 Palm Coast, FL/Livonia, NY: Roger D. Trescott, 68, died suddenly on June 11, 2020, at his home in Palm Coast, FL. Roger was born on January 9, 1952 in Rochester, NY, to Donald and Eleanor (Wood) Trescott. He graduated from Livonia Central High School with the class of 1970 and shortly thereafter entered the U.S. Navy. After serving his country for 22 years he retired as an Aviation Fire Control Technician Senior Chief. He then went on to complete his working career as a Logistics Specialist with a government contractor. Roger enjoyed playing golf, and was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan watching every game they played, he also was a big fan of the Washington Capitals. He and his wife and their dog Olive enjoyed traveling the country in their motor home visiting family and friends but most of all Roger enjoyed spending time with ‘his girls.’ Roger is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kathy; and his daughters, Alyson and Adrienne both of Jacksonville, FL; his mother, Eleanor of Livonia and two sisters and four brothers, Jane (Greg) Safran, Avon, Judy (Bob) Kelly, Livonia, Glen, Livonia, James (Elaine), Rush, Gary (Christine), Scottsville, and Scott (Delana), Prattsburg, and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Trescott, his paternal grandparents, Harry and Ruth Trescott, his maternal grandparents, William and Marion Wood, and aunts and uncles. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Please sign the family’s online guestbook at www.broadusraines.com Arrangements are under the care of BROADUS-RAINES FUNERAL HOME, 501 Spring St., Green Cove Springs, FL 32043. (904) 284-4000

If a loved one is seriously ill and expected to die in a matter of days or weeks, consider making funeral arrangements in advance. Preparing ahead of time puts you in control and allows you to explore all your options. It will make your meeting with a funeral director more productive. Please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401 to learn more about our funeral and memorial services. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Do not seek death. Each year we read new stories about victims who have been duped by confidence men. The same old crooked schemes work on people who should know better but who put an almost childlike trust in total strangers. Johnson speculates that we tend to believe stangers becuase they have no record of deceit. The people close to us may have “fibbed” to us or misrepresented facts, perhaps only to tease. The stranger’s record is unblemished until we learn to our sorrow that he, too, might lie to us for gain. There are definite advantages in making funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Let us review these with you…no cost or obligation.

Hurricane Technologies Residential Support Since August of 2002, Hurricane has been providing computer and technology support to residential and commercial customers. Over the past 10 years, our business has been shifting toward serving mostly commercial customers in the region. The COVID-19 quarantine had forced us to stop serving the needs of our residential customers, and we have made the difficult decision to keep that portion of our business closed indefinitely. We have been proud to support the residents of our community over the years and look forward to a new chapter of focusing on supporting the businesses that serve our residents. Many thanks to our loyal residential customers for the continued support over the years! Tom Vonglis, President Hurricane Technologies, Inc.

A few weeks ago, I was at Walmart in Batavia going through the checkout line, and my card would not register. The kind women behind me just inserted her card and paid for my groceries. I just want to thank her for her generosity and kindness. Thank you! I would like to thank Carrie DiCarlo from Perry Pet in Livonia Center for her graciousness during the loss of my pet dog, Abby. She was very kind and thoughtful during the whole process. She also sent a very nice card with a very nice sentiment. It is truly appreciated and touched my heart. It meant a lot to me. Many thanks, Cheri I would like to thank the person who turned in my debit card at the Dollar General in Livonia.

Last evening, our neighbor had eleven cars lined up along his driveway. We watched as unmasked guests walked into his home. Our Governor has put COVID-19 restrictions in place. It seems that this neighbor and his guests have other ideas. I wonder what the majority of people would think of this behavior. At the grocery store this morning, 5/14, thank you so much for stopping to point me in the right direction whilst I was pushing a stroller with one hand, the wheels turned the wrong way, and it began to move towards the

“enter” side. I had stopped and was attempting to convince the thing to go in the right direction, when you so kindly assumed that I could not read the “exit” sign or see the big orange road cones. Whatever would I do without people like you to take time out of their busy day to point their judgmental finger in the same direction as the arrow on the “exit” sign that’s right in front of my face so that I know which way to go? You can now rest easy knowing you saved lives today. Thank you, social distance warrior. You’re a hero. In my town, nearly everyone is taking COVID-19 precautions, and I’m fine with people wearing masks everywhere they go. However, there is a social network platform, and the people on there are in tinfoil hat mode. At one point, someone illegally took an illegal picture of some minors hanging at a park. They

It was truly appreciated and very honest of you. Many thanks and well wishes to you. A grateful citizen Thank you, Ontario County ARC, for bringing your clients out into nature and leaving painted kindness rocks along trails in powder Mills Park. The artwork and messages are beautiful. I want to thank the angel of a lady who was able to catch my dog on Boughton Rd in Bloomfield on Sunday morning June 21st. My car wouldn’t start, and I was trying to get my dog into a friend’s car as it was hot out. He got scared and bolted from the Boughton Park parking lot and started running down the street. I ran after him, but he was paying no attention to me. She stopped and was able to grab him. What an angel she was! I can’t thank you enough!

proceeded to post it and make such a fuss over them that the town decided to close all the parks. This is a whole new level of stupid, as no one would have gone to the park any ways. To the paranoid people who took and posted the picture, taking pictures of minors without consent by their legal guardian, let alone posting that picture on the internet, is illegal. For future reference, please refrain from criminal activity during bouts of stircraze. I am so sick of seeing how many terrified people are complaining about others not wearing masks. I served my country. I made sacrifices for your liberty and opportunity. Seeing how you discard that liberty without a thought makes me sick. I am free to choose mask or no mask, test or no test, vaccine, or no vaccine. My freedom is not bound by your fear. Dying is not too high a price to pay for the liberty and prosperity that will be my children’s

I would like to thank the LeRoy Village Police Department. We appreciate all that you’ve done. I cannot express how amazing you have been to our community! From stopping by a lemonade stand to showing up with snacks for a drivein movie, to turning on the sirens for a kid passing by, we thank you! A shoutout to the small businesses who have made this time a little more fun for our kids. Paint kits, doughnut and cookie frosting kits, wood flower projects, pizza making kits and more were a huge hit with so many! Thank you for thinking out of the box. We love supporting you! Thank you to our community for making our Graduating Seniors feel special during this crazy year! The banners, yard signs, parades, and adopt-a-senior programs have made them feel so honored. Congratulations Graduates!

inheritance. If you don’t like it, you stay home! The COVID-19 lock down has found many of us struggling financially. Perhaps when this is over, we should all take the time to look at our household budgets. Did you have 60 or even 30 days of cash set aside for a rainy day? Ask yourself do you really need the newest cell phone, the largest flat screen TV, a satellite antenna with those extra pay-per-view channels? Did the local car dealer make you feel so happy and proud to buy the biggest SUV they sold for an extra $49 per month for another 365 days? Maybe the next time the government tells you to sit home for eight weeks with a mask on your face, you can afford to pay for the necessities of life. In the meantime, hide behind your stash of toilet paper when the landlord comes looking for the rent. In God We Trust; the rest pay Cash. Stop complaining.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Someone late for dinner? To keep potatoes warm without drying them out (as would happen in an oven), set their serving dish in a larger pan of hot water and cover. * “I use a small plastic bowl as a scoop in my big bag of potting mix. It’s a good amount to pot a small plant, and I can hold my pot over the bowl to save the soil.” -R.F. in Oregon * Give your buttons a boost! Use clear nail polish to strengthen the strings holding your buttons in place. Just a drop on the face of each button, and let dry. You’ll never know it’s there, but it definitely helps. * “Remember this old trick when camping: Use salt to keep ice cold and slow the melt. In fact, I salt the ice in the cooler whenever we use it, camping or not!” -- G.L. in South Carolina * Challenge your school-age kids or grandkids to a “word scavenger hunt” in the daily newspaper. You can have them search for words relating to a particular subject, or have a contest to see who can find the most unusual or complex words. It gets them reading and looking! Preschool-age kids can use a magazine to do a scavenger hunt for certain items, like colors, animals, kitchen items, etc.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

* Mark a reusable water bottle with time measurements so you’ll know if you are drinking enough during the day. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY (NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills. “Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says. With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken.

Perkinsville Fire Department Chicken BBQ

an Overwhelming Success! BY AMANDA DUDEK

I

n recent months, “cancelled” has become an all too familiar word. Events of all kinds have been postponed and cancelled during our ongoing fight with COVID-19. For the Perkinsville Fire Department, however, serving the community cannot be put on hold. “When the coronavirus hit, we still had our Easter and Mother’s Day breakfasts planned as well as our Ham and Beef Raffle, but we couldn’t hold any of them,” explained Fire Chief Walt Drum, Jr. “Our Fearless Hook and Ladder #1 of Perkinsville helps support our fire district with funds to aid in the purchase of fire equipment. Our donations to the fire district help to keep the taxes down low.” This volunteer fire department has been serving the community for a long time. Established in 1892, the Fearless Hook & Ladder #1 of Perkinsville has been looking out for area residents for 128 years. Raising money for the needs of the fire department, such as a fire hall, has been a priority since its inception. In 1971, the Ladies Auxiliary was founded and participates in supporting the fire department, as well. After many years of hard work and sacrifice, the Perkinsville Fire District was established in 2012 to include the Loon Lake area as well as Perkinsville, and its average number of calls has risen from 42 to 75 a year. “We cover an area from County Line 63 to the Fremont Townline,” said Drum. “We also contract with South Dansville to cover a sliver of their area, and we participate in mutual aid calls in nearby areas such as Wayland, Dansville, Sparta, West Sparta, Cohocton, and Fremont.” The fire department responds to calls regarding fires, motor vehicle accidents, medical calls requiring EMS and could be called upon to assist with water emergencies due to their coverage of Loon Lake. “It is so important to keep taxes down in the Loon Lake area which is taxed more heavily,” explained Drum. “We work well with the Loon Lake Association, providing fire and EMS support during their fireworks displays. They have been very good to us over the years.” When this worthy local institution decided to hold a Father’s Day drive thru chicken BBQ at the Perkinsville Rod and Gun Club to raise support, the community showed up in droves. “We sold 572 heads of chicken and had them all cooked in a little over two hours,” shared Drum. “We are grateful to Seneca Foods for donating vegetables for these meals.” Orders were placed online and through call-in ordering. “It was our first time, so of course, there were some bumps, but we now, we are better prepared for next time,” Drum added. “Retired, active and junior members all pitched in, and it went very well!”

This 1940s photo of Perkinsville Fire Department volunteers still graces the walls of the Perkinsville Fire Hall!

“She bought two dinner and gave us a donation, as well. She has been very supportive of local fire service and things like that, which is wonderful to see from someone in her position.” Assemblywoman Byrnes had previously awarded Perkinsville firefighter Gerry Kiesl with an award for his many years of service. “I think it is important to support our local fire departments at their chicken barbecues because they do so much for our communities on a volunteer basis,” said Assemblywoman Byrnes. To Drum, events like these allow the Perkinsville fire department to continue serving a deserving community. “We are purchasing a new engine which is replacing one that has seen 27 years of service,” he explained. “Our commissioners, who live all over our community, are very good. I cannot say enough about them. They are the best group and so supportive, helping us get what we need.” “We have been here since 1892,” he continued. “Now, our town essentially has two churches, a post office and our fire hall, but we are still here to serve, protect, and help in anyways we can. We have a good membership, great vehicles and a find bunch of officers. Our juniors also truly help out and do a phenomenal job. It isn’t easy. It requires a lot of training and hands-on work, but if we can keep even half of them, we are doing pretty well.”

The BBQ even attracted the attention of New York State Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes who stopped by. “I saw Assemblywoman Byrnes as she was pulling away,” recalled Drum. Enjoy this article? DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers.

Guaranteed Used Auto & Truck Parts

The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall.

Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. palermosautoworks.com A key is used in scripture as a symbol of the power of revealing, or interpreting, secret things; also for power in general. As a key is to a lock, so is power to things intellectual, moral, and political. The scriptures say of Messiah, “the key shall be upon his shoulder,” i.e. “the government shall be possessed by him.” And again, “I have,” says Jesus, “the key of the unseen and of death;” which is to say, that Jesus hath the power to open the abode, or chamber, of the dead, and to restore them to life. In these instances, a key is the symbol of political, and physical, power; but it also represents scientific, or knowledge-imparting, power, Thus, under the law of Moses, it was divinely appointed that “the priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and Israel should seek the law at his mouth: for he was the messenger of the Lord of Hosts.”

M aintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride Balancing tires involves equalizing the w eight of the combined tire and w heel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the w heel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise w eight distribution is nearly impossible w ithout a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires w obble, causing noticeable vibrations. Morris Ridge Solar Energy Center • Livingston County, New York

NOTICE OF SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION Morris Ridge Solar Energy Center, LLC, an indirect subsidiary of EDF Renewables, Inc. (“MRSEC” or “Applicant”) is proposing to construct a major solar electric generating facility up to 177 Megawatts (MW) in capacity in the Town of Mount Morris, Livingston County, New York. To construct the facility, the Applicant must obtain a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (“Certificate”) from the New York State Board on Electric Generating Siting and the Environment (“Siting Board”) pursuant to Article 10 of the Public Service Law and the Siting Board’s rules (16 NYCRR Part 1000). This notice announces that on or about June 30, 2020, the Applicant will file an Article 10 Application seeking a Certificate from the Siting Board. The Morris Ridge Solar Energy Center is a proposed zero-emission solar energy facility that will assist the State in meeting the goals of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (“CLCPA”), which include obtaining 70% of the State’s energy generation from renewable sources by 2030 and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Facility is proposed to include the installation of rows of photovoltaic (“PV”) panels, no more than 12 feet in height and arranged in discrete subarrays dispersed throughout the Facility Site, as well as associated electrical collection lines, inverters, up to 83 MW of energy storage capacity, fencing and access roads. The Facility would deliver electricity to the New York State power grid via a point of interconnection substation along the South Perry-Meyers 230-kV electrical transmission line, which bisects the Facility Site and which is currently owned by the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation. More information on the proposed Facility can be found on the Siting Board’s website under Case 18-F-0440, on the project’s dedicated website (https://www.edf-re.com/project/morris-ridgesolar-project/), and at the local document repositories listed below. Positive impacts of the Facility include diversification of the State’s energy supplies, new employment opportunities (both temporary construction employment and fulltime jobs), and increased revenues to county and local tax bases, payments to the local hospitality industry, and purchase of local supplies and goods. The Applicant has attempted to minimize impacts to land associated with the Facility by limiting the disturbance to forested lands and wetlands to the maximum extent practicable. The construction and operation of the Facility may result in minor environmental impacts as more fully described in the Application, including, but not limited to: impacts on terrestrial ecology; impacts to forested land, wetlands and agricultural lands; and impacts to people, including noise, traffic and visual impacts. The State’s Article 10 process requires that a prospective Applicant complete several steps prior to submission of GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

an Application and dictates the materials which must be included in an Article 10 Application. These regulations can be found at 16 NYCRR 1001.1 et seq. Prior to submission of the forthcoming Application, MRSEC filed a Preliminary Scoping Statement on April 1, 2019 with the Siting Board and, following a public comment period, prepared a response to material comments submitted May 13, 2019. On May 15, 2019, a pre-application procedural conference to consider intervenor funding requests was held and the scoping stipulation process was ordered to commence. Stipulations were negotiated with parties, filed for public comment, and executed by the parties. The Applicant is now ready to file an Application. The forthcoming Application includes, among other things: studies and analysis of the environmental setting of the Facility; maps and visual simulations of the proposed Facility, including preliminary design drawings and related information; copies of reports, studies and plans submitted in support of the Application; and an assessment of impacts of construction and/or operation of the Facility relating to land use; consistency with State energy planning objectives, including climate change and renewable energy goals; public health and safety; terrestrial ecology, water resources and aquatic ecology, including avian habitat and wetlands; communications, transportation and utilities; cultural, historical and recreational resources; visual and noise impacts; electric magnetic fields; and impacts on the statewide electrical system. A copy of the Application will be served on the Chief Executive Officer of each municipality in which any portion of the Facility is located, as well as those persons and agencies enumerated in 16 NYCRR 1000.6. The record of this proceeding, including the Application, may be examined during normal business hours at the Offices of the New York State Department of Public Service (DPS) at 3 Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY 12223, and may also be viewed at the following public repositories: Mount Morris Town Office, 103 Main Street, Mount Morris, NY 14510; Mount Morris Public Library, 121 Main Street, Mount Morris, NY 14510; Nunda Town Hall, 4 Massachusetts Street, Nunda, NY 14517; and Bell Memorial Library, 16 East Street, Nunda, NY 14517.

Examiner as needed. After hearings, the stakeholders may brief their positions and the Hearing Examiner will issue a recommended decision upon which the Siting Board will base its decision. Article 10 requires that all proceedings on the Application, including a final decision by the Siting Board, must be completed within 12 months of when the Application is determined to be complete. Upon filing the Application, the Applicant will provide funding in the amount of $177,000 to be disbursed by the Hearing Examiners to municipalities and other local parties to help pay expenses, including attorneys and consultants, associated with participating in the Article 10 process during the application review phase. By law, fifty percent (50%) of these intervenor funds are reserved for municipalities. Following the filing of an Application, the Hearing Examiner or the Secretary will issue a notice of availability of application intervenor funds that provides a schedule and related information describing how interested members of the public may apply for application funds. Requests for application funds must be submitted to the Hearing Examiner within thirty (30) days after the issuance of the notice of the availability of application intervenor funds. Following the submittal of any intervenor funding requests, the Hearing Examiner may schedule a pre-hearing conference to consider fund requests. HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

WHY MEDIATION? Divorce and separation are emotionally draining. PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta DEAR PAW’S CORNER: In a private Facebook group I belong to, someone is offering a pet for adoption, saying it belonged to their recently deceased mother-in-law. They want a $650 fee for “rehoming” the pet, because they say it has AKC registration. Is this a legitimate fee? It seems awfully steep. -- James in Burlington, Vermont DEAR JAMES: Rehoming fees are a fact of life for private pet placements, but $650 to simply adopt a pet is unreasonably steep. That isn’t to say that rehoming fees are a bad thing. A reasonable rehoming fee can prevent a pet from being adopted by people with bad intentions, who can’t financially care for a pet, or who are impulsively adopting a cute little dog that they might abandon at the first hiccup in behavior. The flip side is someone abusing the rehoming fee for personal profit. That person may claim that the fee offsets their costs of caring for the pet, but when the rehoming fee far outstrips the cost of adopting from a shelter, it’s time to proceed with caution. Find out what the local shelter charges to adopt a pet and ask online what average rehoming fees are for your area. If you’re interested in the dog, contact the offerer and find out as many details as possible about its breed, temperament, health and the environment it lives in. Do not send any money beforehand. You need to meet both them and the dog in person, and no money should change hands until both sides agree (in writing, ideally) to the rehoming. Further, if they are truly concerned for the dog’s welfare, they will have questions for you -- maybe even an application -- to make sure you are genuinely adopting the dog and will be a good owner. There are so many decisions to be made regarding the division of property and debts. Who gets the house? What about retirement funds? What about the kids? Where do they live? How will college bills be paid? Mediation helps you and your spouse make those decisions by guiding you through the decision making process. The final decisions are made by you and your spouse; not a judge. Mediation is: non-adversarial, private, less expensive, faster. If you are considering divorce or separation, consider mediation. MCT Mediation has offices at Spot Cowork in Victor and Henrietta. Appointments by Zoom are available. Check out www.MCTMediation.com

It marked the 100th human space mission in American history. (The History Channel) Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

Fireworks Safety Tips from The Village of Avon 1. Be extra careful with sparklers: please make sure sparklers are used outside, and away from clothes, hair, and face. 2. Keep fireworks a safe distance from homes and vehicles: a minimum of 20 feet is recommended. 3. Have a hose or bucket of water ready for accidents in and around any dry areas. 4. Children under the age of 18 need to be supervised by an adult. Do not allow children to pick up pieces of fireworks that may still ignite. 5. Do not point fireworks at other people. 6. Keep pets inside.

***Please remember the use of illegal or out of state fireworks is strictly prohibited and may cause you to incur a ticket and/or fine. In an emergency, call 911. Have a safe and happy fourth of July! Brian Strozewski- Fire Chief • Andy Anderson- Fire Marshal

GENERAL CONTRACTING

DID YOU KNOW? Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.

HOW TO MAKE EXISTING WINDOWS MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT

Butler

Caulk or add weatherstripping. Small cracks and gaps around windows, which are most often found around windows in older buildings, might not seem like a big deal, but such breaches can lead to considerable energy loss. The DOE recommends using caulk to seal cracks that are less than 1/4-inch wide on the parts of the window that do not move (i.e., frames and where the trim meets the wall). Caulk might be less effective at fixing leaks larger than 1/4 inch in width. Employ weatherstripping to address leaks on movable parts of the window. HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR Establish a bar setup Home bars can range from rolling carts to built-in wet bars to a single tray of items. Space in a home will dictate the kind of bar homeowners can have. Rolling bar carts are popular and versatile, and they can be kept stationary or rolled in and out of a room as needed. If a bar cart is open, organization is key, as you don’t want it to look unkempt. A full-blown wet bar will require more construction, including plumbing and electricity if you need outlets for plugging in appliances. Wet bars are ideal in dens, renovated garages and finished basements.

PROTECT YOUR FLOORS A way to prolong the life of flooring is to protect it from wear and tear. Removing shoes before walking indoors can help. Avoid high heels and athletic cleats, which can create divots in hardwood and some other types of flooring. Place indoor and outdoor mats at the entrances of the home to catch any dirt that would be ground into the flooring. Furniture protectors will help prevent scratches from furniture feet while moving pieces around a room. Remember to wipe up spills when they occur to prevent the formation of stains. Page 39

BRING MORE NATURAL LIGHT INTO A HOME Assess the situation before renovating. Walk around the house and determine which rooms get the most light and which conditions may be contributing to the problem in other areas. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Nothing can be more frustrating than wanting to begin a project only to spend precious time looking for tools. Almost as important as the investment in tools is the investment in tool storage. Hardwood or metal tool chests feature various drawers and cabinets that can house tools of different sizes. By keeping tools in a chest, they’re easy to find and more likely to stay sharp and in good condition. Metal tools should be stored in a cool, dry area, as dust and moisture can cause rusting issues on metal tools. One way to alleviate rust is to spray metal tools with a product like WD-40 to serve as a moisture barrier, then store them in closed drawers or containers. All tools do not necessarily have to be stored in a garage or work shed. Many homeowners like to keep smaller tools in the house so that frequently used items are within reach. A hammer, wrench, pliers, and a few screwdrivers are handy tools to have around inside the house.

Laundry/Housekeeping GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
