EXPERT ADVICE FOR COLLEGE-BOUND GRADS

HOW TO KEEP GRILLED FOODS WARM

“Gather all the syllabi during the first week of classes and write down the due date for every single paper, project, test or whatever. You’ll see instantly which weeks are potential killers.” - Junior, Wake Forest

Create a tin foil tent and place foods inside. The tent can then be placed on a less hot area of the grill or placed into an oven that’s not on. Avoid tenting foods that are meant to have crispy skins, as tenting can moisten the skin.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Don’t Drink Wine for Health Reasons ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: As a winemaker, I get my daily (small) dose of resveratrol through red wine. I drink about a half bottle daily. But I also take resveratrol supplements. What is the latest evidence as to the health benefits of this natural polyphenol? Am I ingesting too much? -- G.G. ANSWER: Resveratrol is a substance found in red wine, coming from grape skins. One study in rats showed that it improved lifespan, and many people were interested in it. However, the dose of red wine needed to duplicate the study would be about 1,000 liters daily for a human; worse, a trial of resveratrol (in people with multiple myeloma) showed no benefit, and five of the 24 subjects developed kidney failure (it was not clear whether the myeloma or the resveratrol was responsible for the kidney damage. Also, the dose used was 5 grams, which is 10 to 20 times the size of the usual supplement). A trial in Alzheimer’s disease patients was too short to prove benefit but did seem to show increased brain volume. A 2016 review shows that at high doses, it lowers blood pressure (which often is raised by alcohol) and cholesterol. For that reason, resveratrol still holds promise, but it’s too early to recommend as a supplement. It’s not the resveratrol I’m worried about your getting too much of; it’s alcohol. A half a bottle of wine (assuming average alcohol content, which varies a little) for an average-size man is two and a half glasses, which contains alcohol that is over the level of most recommendations (one glass for women, two for men, with food). For some people, wine enhances pleasure in life when taken moderately, and that’s the only reason it should be consumed. Alcohol should not be taken for health reasons.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I think I may have herpes, but I’m not sure. What are the symptoms of the virus? When I go to the doctor, what do I say? When I was there last time, I was given a urine test for STDs, which was negative, but now I urinate a lot and have a bump on my penis. -- M.G. ANSWER: When we are discussing herpes as a sexually transmitted disease, we usually refer to herpes simplex virus type 2. Even though other herpes viruses can be transmitted sexually, HSV-2 is the most prevalent, with approximately 50 million people in the U.S. infected. HSV-2 usually is asymptomatic, but in both men and women it can be associated with periodic outbreaks of blisters, classically filled with clear fluid and painful. During this time, the virus can be accurately identified by a laboratory. However, it is often not a classic appearance, and it’s wise to consider the diagnosis of HSV for any genital lesion. The quality of the herpes blood test has improved in recent years, and it is a good way to make the diagnosis in someone who doesn’t have a lesion at the time they see the doctor. Two other STDs -- gonorrhea and chlamydia -- can be diagnosed using a urine test, but not HSV. When you go to the doctor, ask for a blood test to rule out herpes definitively. Urinating a lot is not a usual symptom for STDs, but painful or uncomfortable urination is. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. INFLAMMATION Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

“There are no hopeless situations; there are only people who have grown hopeless about them…” ~ Clare Boothe Luce Children face countless “hopeless” situations. Tying a shoelace, for example, seems totally impossible to the tiny tot who has not yet mastered the art. Adults, who have gone through this stage themselves, will smile and realize that soon the solution will be found and the “hopeless” situation resolved. The frightening situations that we all must face from time to time may seem to be utterly hopeless. If we despair and stop trying, there is no hope. If we persist, hoping for an answer, our problems will prove to be far from hopeless. You can be sure that your wishes will be followed by making arrangements for your funeral service in advance of need. All details will be handled exactly as you specify. Ask our staff about this.

Make Health A Family Reunion Affair: Talk With Your Family About Kidney Health (NAPS)—Family reunions are a great way to reconnect with loved ones, celebrate your family’s heritage and make new memories. Family reunions are also an opportunity to talk about family health history. You may have family members who have diabetes, high blood pressure or both. These are conditions that often run in families and are risk factors for kidney disease. Kidney disease affects African Americans more than other groups. That’s why it’s important to talk to your family about risk factors for kidney disease, how to get tested and how kidney disease can be treated. Kidney disease is a serious and common health problem, affecting an estimated 30 million adults in the United States. Kidney disease means your kidneys are damaged and can’t filter blood the way they should. Kidney disease can often get worse over time and may lead to kidney failure. If your kidneys fail, you will need dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain your health. The sooner you know about your family history of kidney disease, the sooner you can make changes to help protect your kidneys. To get you started talking with your family about kidney health, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), a part of the National Institutes of Health, created the Family Reunion Health Guide. This guide offers basic information about kidney disease and suggests approaches you can take to connect with your family about kidney health. You can use this guide to help make kidney health a family reunion affair. Information in the guide includes materials and tips to help you: Talk With Your Family About the Risk Factors for Kidney Disease Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of kidney disease. You are also at risk if you have a family history of kidney failure or have heart disease. The Family Reunion Health Guide can help you talk with your family about kidney disease and its connection to diabetes, high blood pressure and other risk factors. Encourage Family Members at Risk for Kidney Disease to Get Tested Many people with kidney disease don’t know they have the disease until their kidneys begin to fail. This is because you can have kidney disease without any symptoms. The good news is that when kidney disease is found early, there are ways to protect your kidneys by managing your blood pressure, eating a healthy diet and being active. There is no cure for kidney failure, but dialysis or a kidney transplant can help you live longer and feel better. The sooner you find out you have kidney disease, the sooner you can take steps to prevent more serious health problems. This is why it’s important to talk with your family about the need to get tested. Make a Family Commitment to Kidney Health You can reduce your risk for developing kidney disease by taking steps to live a healthy lifestyle. Diagnosing and treating the disease early can slow or prevent the progression of kidney disease. The Family Reunion Health Guide shares ideas for how you can encourage family members to take steps to protect their kidney health. By being your family’s kidney health champion, you can help ensure that your family enjoys many more reunions to come. Learn More For more information about kidney disease, kidney failure, diabetes, high blood pressure and more, or to access the Family Reunion Health Guide, visit the NIDDK website at www.niddk.nih.gov. Talking to your family about health issues can help you all live longer, better lives. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Don’t be surprised if, in spite of your well-made plans, something goes awry. But don’t worry. Your knowledge of the facts plus your Arian charm will help you work it out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A personal relationship seems to be demanding more than you feel you’re able to give. Best advice: Confront the issue. You could find the situation surprisingly easy to work through. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Resist being pressured into meeting your self-imposed deadline. This is important if you really feel that taking more time to finish a project could save time in the long run. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A vacation choice seems less interesting than when you first made it. Could it be a matter of the place or the people going with you? Find out before you consider a change of plans. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Someone might be overriding your Leonine logic to get you to agree to “favors” that you would normally avoid. Take a new look at what you’ve been asked to do and see if you’ve been misled. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Try to keep that emerging “judgmental” aspect in check this week. Too many critiques on relatively unimportant issues could create a lot of negative bounce-back reactions. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Facing unpleasant facts about an associate isn’t easy. But ignoring them isn’t wise. Ask a trusted (and neutral) friend to help guide you on what to do and how you might do it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A shift in opinion regarding a workplace situation could go a long way in vindicating the stand you’ve taken. But be aware that a satisfactory resolution could still be a long way off. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It’s not like you to choose the easy way rather than the right way to do things. So, follow your instincts and feel assured they will lead you to the right decision. Good luck. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Hold off on making a personal commitment until you find out what it really entails and whose interests are actually involved. There could be hidden facts you need to know. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new friend offers an unexpected opportunity that could lead to a career change. Check it out carefully and consider getting an assessment from someone familiar with this field. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A surprising discovery leads to mixed reactions from those involved in the “revelation.” But as you come to appreciate the truth, you’ll be able to come to terms with your feelings. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of travel helps you appreciate the wonders of the world. You would find a satisfying career in any travelrelated industry.

Great Gatsby Themed Party to Raise Funds for Little Yellow Hearts By Amanda Dudek

“I

sell, like the candles and coffee mugs, we put back into LYH.”

“It was very hard for us to watch,” Nina shared. “You constantly hear that pediatric cancer is so rare, a rare form of brain cancer or lung cancer, but really it is not all that rare, especially when you see it in all these kids.” Brewer and her two friends knew they had to do more for these children, so in February 2019, they formed LYH. Now each month, LYH selects families in which children are battling pediatric cancer and uses the proceeds of its Little Yellow Hearts subscription boxes to support them.

Little Yellow Hearts has big plans for its future. “Eventually, we would like to contribute towards research for treatment, as well,” Nina shared. “Right now, only 4% of the funding goes towards treatments. There are currently only a handful of treatments that children are able to have, so many children receive adult doses of radiation and chemotherapy. Several children die from these treatments because their bodies can’t handle it.”

honestly went my whole life without thinking about childhood cancer,” said Nina Brewer, cofounder of Little Yellow Hearts. Things changed suddenly for Nina Brewer in New York, Meghan Williams in Colorado and Christine Park in Georgia when their mutual friend’s 9-month-old baby girl lost her battle with brain cancer. In response to this devastating loss, these friends formed Little Yellow Hearts (LYH), a nonprofit which sponsors families whose children are fighting pediatric cancer.

“A lot of parents in these families wind up quitting their jobs to be with and care for their children, but the bills don’t stop,” Nina observed. “We currently support families from all over the United States. For example, one family for the month of June lives in Washington State.”

Little Yellow Hearts supports Braylon Nina is currently working with Trisda Marshall, who as she battles pediatric cancer.

Brewer explained that many families are nominated through the LYH website; they can even nominate themselves. “We find a lot of them on social media,” said Nina. “Some families have a lot of support on social media, setting up GoFundMe pages and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars, and other simply do not. We are looking for those families who do not have the means to make that happen so that we can help them if they want us to.”

was brought onboard to coordinate Fundraisers and who Nina says is doing an incredible job, to host LYH’s first in-person event: a Great Gatsby Themed Party. “Inperson events are so important,” Nina said. “This is our first one, so I am really, really excited about it! I would like to have others and raise awareness so that people know who we are and so that they can find us. It is hard when you are just starting out!”

Although LYH has only been in operation for fewer than five months, it has already supported 7 or 8 families. “Our original plan was to sponsor one family each month, but that was not practical,” Nina said. “We are supporting three families this month alone.”

The Great Gatsby Themed Party will be held on Sunday, June 30th at CB’s Bar & Grill, located in Dansville. “The party will include a Bachelor/Bachelorette Auction, live DJ, best costume prize and raffles for several items including baskets from various local businesses,” explained Nina. “I am going to be putting together a whole bunch of items to create a LYH basket, as well.” Those interested in supporting Little Yellow hearts can also donate directly through their website or purchase items to go into packages.

LYH sells subscription boxes filled with special, homemade items. “We try to tailor the packages to the specific interests of the children we are supporting,” shared Nina. “One little girl, Braylon, has lung cancer, and she loves Trolls. So, we tailored her box to that. We included Trolls activity packs, hair ties, stickers, whatever we thought would capture the personality of the child. One lady even donated Troll-themed wax melts for the parents!” Nina and LYH are willing to go the extra mile to ensure that their packages are special and uniquely qu y representative pr of these children. “We are supporting a 6-month-old baby, and he has this specific pacifier, the WubbaNub, that we were trying to track down. They are little pricey, but it is worth it because it reminds those who receive our boxes of this particular child.” “We make a lot of things on our own to cut down on costs,” said Nina. “We make coffee mugs, and we have vinyl stickers, candles and things like that which we sell. The proceeds of any packages we sell during that month are set aside for the families we are sponsoring that month. The proceeds from anything else we

“My whole life changed the day my friend lost her baby girl,” Nina said. “What really broke my heart was that my friend’s baby girl was the same age as my daughter at that time. Like me, you may not think two seconds about it until it becomes part of your life. These are our kids. We are supposed to look out for them and keep them safe from whatever we can. Our cause is a good cause, a worthy cause, and it’s worth five minutes of your time.

My whole life changed that day.

PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic. “On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.” He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year. Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard. If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price. Learn More: For further facts and advice, go to www.windownation.com.

PITCH IN AND SAVE MONEY Demolition: Demolition involves more than picking up a sledgehammer and swinging away. Some demolition projects are best left to the pros. For example, any projects that involve exposure to hazardous materials are risky and therefore best left to experienced laborers. However, many homeowners are capable of safely and effectively pulling cabinets from walls, removing flooring or knocking down drywall. Homeowners unsure of how to approach demolition tasks can ask their contractors to demonstrate the proper technique so the demolition is done right and on time.

RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

When renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
