--DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Even though stay-at-home orders have been lifted in my state, we still have to social distance when out in public. Where can I take my dog, “Blake,” that isn’t too crowded? The beaches are already filled with people. -- Staying Safe on the East Coast

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Just like humans, pets need a combination of physical activity and caloric moderation to maintain healthy weights. Daily caloric needs for indoor cats range from 180 to 200 calories per day. The larger a dog is, the more calories it needs.

During This Time We Are Offering: Telemedicine appointments and sterile office appointments in Mt. Morris. No walk-in appointments will be accepted. Spay and neuter clinics are open.

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

DEAR SAFE: After so many weeks stuck indoors, it’s natural that people are rushing to get outside into parks or next to the water. That not only is a safety concern when trying to keep the spread of the new coronavirus under control, but also for dogs who may be stressed by so many people or feel threatened by other dogs. If the beach is Blake’s favorite spot, the best way to maintain social distance (and give him more room to romp around) is to go at times when few people are there. That means going as early in the morning as possible, if you can, hitting the beach at sunrise, and heading home before too many people start arriving. The same strategy applies to dog parks and outdoor recreation spots. Even trails in my area that I thought of as remote, or not very popular, are crowded with day hikers struggling to pass each other on the narrow paths. You may need to do what I did, and switch to an early morning weekday schedule when fewer people frequent these public areas. Once the outdoor play time or hike is complete, and before you hop back into the car, wipe down Blake’s outer coat and paws with a clean cloth, checking for scratches or ticks. That way you won’t bring home any other potential pathogens. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com.

Type of carpeting There are m any different types of carpeting, som e of w hich are best suited to certain situations. For exam ple, plush and saxony carpets are better in low -traffic areas. These carpets m ay show footprints and also vacuum tracks and dirt, but they’re higher on the com fort spectrum than other types of carpet. Berber, w hich is m ore flat and dense, helps m ask stains and tracks. It is durable in high-traffic areas. Textured carpets like frieze are cut from fibers of different heights, so they m ask stains and are also softer on the feet than berber. Padding It isn’t alw ays necessary to purchase the m ost expensive or thickest padding. How ever, it is w ise to pick a pad that m atches the type of carpeting you’re selecting and one that aligns w ith how you plan to use the room . You m ay be able to go w ith a thinner pad in low -traffic room s and beneath dense carpeting like berber. In high-traffic room s, choose a thicker, m ore durable padding. Padding prevents carpet backing and fibers from com ing apart over tim e. It pays to invest in a padding that w ill last as w ell. Installation Select a reliable carpet retailer and installer for your business. Com petent installers w ill lay the carpeting in the correct m anner so that it w ill look beautiful and m aintain its durability for the life of the product.

GENERAL CONTRACTING

DID YOU KNOW? Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.

Space in a home will dictate the kind of bar homeowners can have. Rolling bar carts are popular and versatile, and they can be kept stationary or rolled in and out of a room as needed. If a bar cart is open, organization is key, as you don’t want it to look unkempt. A full-blown wet bar will require more construction, including plumbing and electricity if you need outlets for plugging in appliances. Wet bars are ideal in dens, renovated garages and finished basements.

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS

Texture & Drop Ceilings

Leaf spot The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that leaf spot diseases affect both cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungi is causing the problem. For example, bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungi that causes leaf spot, and it also produces dark purple to black spots. However, it tends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such situations, professional landscapers can be invaluable resources as well.

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal. The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.

CONTROL CRABGRASS BEFORE IT APPEARS Apply a pre-emergent herbicide. Pre-emergent herbicides kill crabgrass seedlings as they germinate. While these herbicides are highly effective, they must be applied at precisely the right time. The right time to apply them depends on weather patterns. For example, Lowes notes that homeowners who live in regions that might have experienced warmer than usual winters will probably need to apply the herbicides earlier than usual. While the manufacturer instructions should always be followed when applying herbicides, it’s essential that homeowners take weather patterns into consideration as well.

When it com es tim e to update the electrical system , it is alw ays best to w ork w ith licensed and bonded electricians w ho have the expertise to w ork w ith electrical w iring w ithout getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely w ill recom m end upgrading the electrical panel to bring m ore pow er from the utility poles into the hom e. This can include replacing the existing m eter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle m ore pow er or replacing item s that are obsolete or dangerous. M any older hom es are only capable of handling a m inim um num ber of am ps, utilizing just a few circuits. But now adays, w hen hom eow ners have far m ore electronics in their hom es than they once did, increased dem and on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety m easure to prevent the w ire from becom ing overheated and causing a fire. How ever, in som e old system s, the circuit breaker w ill not trip, and this can be problem atic. Rew iring a hom e is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over tim e, and new w ires m ay be needed. This can be m essy and tim e-consum ing, but it’s a sm all price to pay for safety. When rew iring an electrician also m ay suggest new outlets. M any hom e building codes now require outlets w ith ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathroom s and other room s exposed to m oisture. Som e older hom es m ay not even have three-pronged outlets, so this w ill necessitate an update as w ell.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

Athletes can pursue a host of potential hobbies or activities that will foster their love of sports. Men and women who still have a hop in their step can sign up to compete in adult sports leagues. Depending on the sport, leagues might be available to adults of various ages and skill levels, and some may even be more focused on fun than competition. For athletes who can no longer lace up their cleats, coaching youth sports or volunteering to coach at a nearby school provides a chance to stay involved even if competing is no longer possible.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On June 8, 1949, George Orwell’s novel of a dystopian future, “1984,” is published. Games that can

By Matilda Charles

challenge the brain

Meals on Wheels If you're having trouble accessing food, Meals on Wheels has received new temporary guidance from the government, and the qualifications have changed. At this point if you're over age 60 and staying home to avoid the virus, or if you're under age 60, have a disability and live with someone who receives Meals on Wheels, you may qualify for help. One of the requirements is being at nutritional risk. If you can't get what you need from a store or can't afford the additional costs, you may qualify. If you're staying home to avoid the virus and can't afford food delivery, you may qualify. It's worth asking about, surely. At this point Meals on Wheels groups across the country are receiving cash donations, grants and federal funding, and volunteers are flooding in. So if you ask for help, you won't be taking away from others who might also need it. To find the Meals on Wheels in your area, call the senior center, Agency on Aging or look online for Meals on Wheels in your state.

Games are as popular as ever. For evidence of that, one need look no further than his or her own smartphone. The number of hours people spend playing games on their smartphones might surprise even the most ardent players. According to the mobile research firm Apptopia, between May and July of 2018, mobile users spent a whopping 3.38 billion hours playing the wildly popular strategy game "Clash of Clans," making it the most popular smartphone game in the world during that time period. Games might be seen as a way to unwind, but some games can potentially do more than merely provide a way to escape the daily grind. Brain teasers, riddles and crossword puzzles are just some of the types of games that can help people engage and challenge their brains while still providing a bit of escapism. A Healthier Michigan, which is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield Michigan and aims to help locals adopt healthier lifestyles, notes that the following exercises, games and platforms can help men and women challenge their brains in unique ways. · BrainHQ: According to Posit Science, which created the system, BrainHQ (www.aarp.brainhq.com) is a system of training the brain that was developed by neuroscientists and other brain experts. The BrainHQ platform includes various brain training exercises with hundreds of levels that can help people improve their brain function, including memory and retention. · Writing in the Stars: Similar to a crossword puzzle, this game provides a list of nine words to users, who must then find the six words that connect to from a six-point star before they can move on the next level. Available at www. happy-neuron.com, Writing in the Stars aims to help users improve their logical reasoning. · Private Eye: With a goal of helping users improve their focused attention and concentration, Private Eye (www.happy-neuron.com) asks players to peruse a grid full of intricate layers and symbols in an effort to find the item that does not belong. · Braingle: With more than 200,000 members, Braingle (www.braingle.com) is a popular online community where users can go to access brain teasers, trivia quizzes, IQ tests, and more. Users even rank the games, allowing novices to find games that might help them hone certain skills or ease their way into challenging their brains with games. Millions of people across the globe play games every day. Though players often play games to have fun, they might be helping their brains without even knowing it. TF197047

BECOMING MORE ATTRACTIVE TO AUTO LENDERS It is common for consumers to spend months researching and saving for new vehicles. But many auto buyers do not put the same amount of effort into finding auto loans. That’s unfortunate, as Consumer Reports notes that those who do not have financing arranged before visiting a dealership may not get the best loan terms. Prior to buying a vehicle, drivers should give consideration to how they appear in the eyes of creditors. Few if any people pay for cars or trucks in full at the time of purchase. As a result, it’s key for buyers to make themselves as attractive as possible in lenders’ eyes. Improving credit score: Lenders use consumers’ credit scores to determine how likely they will be to honor the terms of a potential loan. Consumers’ FICO® scores are the type of credit score most often used to make lending decisions. FICO scores range between 300 and 850. The higher the score, the lower the risk to lenders. However, lenders do not necessarily use the same formula to assess risk. The first step potential borrowers should take is figuring out what their credit score is, and what information is on their credit report. For those who haven’t done so already, they can request a free copy of their credit reports from the three major credit monitoring bureaus. Once credit reports are obtained, consumers can work to correct any mistakes or inconsistencies. Some of these may be simple fixes, while others may take some effort. A 2012 study from the Federal Trade Commission found that one in five consumers had an error on at least one of their credit reports. Consumers also can improve their credit scores by doing the following: • Make payments on time, as payment history can have the greatest effect on a bad credit score, according to Credit.com. • Reduce debt by paying off balances on credit cards or other loans. • Obtain a mix of different credit sources, such as those in the form of credit cards, furniture financing, home ownership, and auto loans. This, too, can raise credit scores and make borrowers appear less risky. • Keep old credit accounts open, as they establish a strong credit history. Try not to open too many new accounts in a short period of time. Borrowers with strong credit will be attractive to lenders and will have more loan options at their disposal. AUTOMOTIVE

* If you love a good BOGO deal, you’re not alone. Oftentimes, for items like condiments or staples, this means you need a place to put it until it’s time to use. For items that are safe to store at room temperature, find a place that it out of direct light, and is cool and dark. But avoid lower cabinets that are close to the stove or dishwasher, as these can get quite warm. * Tackle the nitty gritty around knobs and crevices of your kitchen appliances with a toothbrush! Just dampen it, add a bit of baking soda for a gritty scrub that won’t scratch, and then dip it in dish soap to cut through grease and grime.

* Never scrub a cast iron skillet. It needs the patina in order to heat food evenly. Here’s how to keep yours operational: Clean with a stiff brush and regular dish soap. Rinse clean, and dry immediately, preferably by placing it on a warm to hot burner for a few minutes. When dry, rub with a light coating of oil. ●

You can attach a keychain ring to a fabric pouch and hang that from a lanyard worn around your neck if you want to keep them on you. Reading glasses bump into many things and can get scratched easily, so protect them.” -- F.J. in Florida * Maybe you’re not putting miles on your vehicle like you used to, but don’t neglect your car! Take some time to get your car’s interior looking great so she’ll be ready when you get back on the road. Give the upholstery a good cleaning. Bust out the detail brushes on your vacuum or shop vac, and give leather and plastic surfaces a wipe down with a protectant.

Excerpt from

Elpis Israel by John Thomas The mystery of the kingdom, then, has been made known, and we find that it had relation to the sufferings of the Christ; and repentance, remission of sins, and eternal life in his name, to the Jews first and afterwards to the Gentiles. The prophets, who foretold these things, were not able to penetrate the mystery of them; and the angels themselves, who brought the word to them, desired to understand them. But this was not permitted; and it was preserved as a secret until after the sufferings of Christ, which were to be the foundation of the manifestation.

RELEASE, REFRESH, RESET

Galbraith

(NAPSI)—You don’t have to let a busy schedule break your healthy stride or keep you from crushing your goals. You can regroup on your approach instead. By incorporating these three ways to release, refresh and reset, you can still make health a priority. 1. Release Your Mind by Escaping into Nature. Getting out into nature gives you the space and peace to release the things that bog you down. Escape the rush. Try camping in the wilderness or taking a scenic hike. Studies show that surrounding yourself with nature can have positive effects on mental health. Ditch the office and try working outdoors at a picnic table or on a blanket in the grass. Wherever you go, whatever you do, sit back and breathe in the fresh air.

Tree & Shrub • Tree Removal • Pruning • Land Clearing • Stump Grinding • Brush Chipping

3. Reset Your Soul with Time for Yourself. In addition to carving out time for fitness, you need to make time for yourself. Creating positive energy in a chaotic world can be challenging but it’s important for overall health and well-being. You don’t have to be a yogi to meditate. Experts say to start small—try focusing for 10 minutes a day in a quiet place and don’t get frustrated if your mind wanders. It takes practice but the benefits are worth the investment. You may find you’re more calm and productive and you sleep better. Whatever helps you reset, create time in your schedule and act on it. You owe it to yourself.

The best service at the best price

2. Refresh Your Exercise Routine with New Moves. Inspiration derives from new experiences, which is why exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor Tom Holland recommends mixing up your daily workout routine. “Give yourself the opportunity to explore and challenge yourself in new ways,” suggests Holland. Try a new workout program, or an exercise machine that moves you in new ways, such as the breakthrough Bowflex LateralX (www.bowflex.com/lateralx) cardio machine. It strengthens and activates muscles with side-to-side, pushand-pull and stand-and-squat motions that target the arms, back, hips and core, as well as common trouble spots including glutes, hamstrings and quads. By moving in all directions, you mimic everyday activities such as yard work, housecleaning or chasing after your kids. It’s a new and exciting workout that can keep you motivated.

Does a CPAP Machine Need Special Cleaning? ---

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea in the early 1990s and have been using a CPAP machine ever since. I’ve just recently begun seeing advertisements on television for a product that cleans the inside of your CPAP machine. It is common knowledge that we must clean the facial mask, hoses and other external parts of the machine on a regular basis, as well as changing the filters, but I have no recollection of ever having been informed by any of my sleep specialist doctors that the inside of the CPAP machine requires regular cleaning. I also do not recall ever seeing any instructions regarding this in any CPAP manual. I notice that this new CPAP cleaning machine costs approximately $250-$300, and I have already read a few reviews posted by people who have had lots of problems with it functioning properly. Is it really necessary to clean the inside of your CPAP machine? I’ve never been informed of this in all the years I’ve had sleep apnea, and I have gone through several machines. -- C.P. ANSWER: A CPAP machine is a pressurized device used mostly for people with obstructive sleep apnea. I also have seen these advertisements, but a review of the literature suggests that there’s a very low risk of infection or allergic reaction due to a dirty machine, mask or hose. Although the cleaning devices do work, I could find no evidence that they are necessary or offer any benefit beyond regular cleaning with soap and water. This should be done regularly. Filters should be changed every two to four weeks. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: If you have had hepatitis B, are you able to donate anything (e.g., blood or organs)? I was never diagnosed with the disease, but I tested positive for the antibodies during a blood donation over 30 years ago. Someone recently told me that I can still donate plasma. Is this true? I signed up on my driver’s license to be an organ donor. Should I uncheck that box? I don’t want to endanger anybody unknowingly. -- J.S. ANSWER: Antibodies to hepatitis B may be developed during natural infection or through vaccination. A doctor can tell which kind from a blood test, by determining whether the hepatitis B core antibody is positive. People who have had natural infection (a positive core antibody) may not donate blood or plasma. People who have been vaccinated (the surface antibody is positive, but the core antibody is negative) may safely donate blood and plasma. As far as transplants go, before considering using a person’s organs for transplant, the transplant team checks for the presence of active virus with sophisticated DNA testing. The likelihood of your endangering someone is low. There is such an organ shortage that organs often are accepted from people with a history of viral hepatitis. For example, the medical team taking care of a person who is likely to die imminently without a heart transplant may accept the heart of a person with a history of hepatitis B infection. The person receiving the transplant likely would need antiviral treatment after surgery. Don’t uncheck the box. Your organs may help extend the life and sight of many people. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

Men and women who cannot adhere to proper form when working out may need to reduce the amount of weight they’re lifting. As activities are performed using proper form, people may find they’re building muscle without growing fatigued. As workouts progress, weight can be added.

Hurricane Technologies Residential Support Since August of 2002, Hurricane has been providing computer and technology support to residential and commercial customers. Over the past 10 years, our business has been shifting toward serving mostly commercial customers in the region. The COVID-19 quarantine had forced us to stop serving the needs of our residential customers, and we have made the difficult decision to keep that portion of our business closed indefinitely. We have been proud to support the residents of our community over the years and look forward to a new chapter of focusing on supporting the businesses that serve our residents. Many thanks to our loyal residential customers for the continued support over the years! Tom Vonglis, President Hurricane Technologies, Inc.

They gave the full measure of devotion. They are honored each Memorial Day in the month of May. Veterans are honored on Veterans Day, November 11th each year. November 11th was formerly called Armistice Day.

I retired after 40 years in the Graphic Arts. I look forward to your publication and appreciate the work you produce. Thank you and stay safe. - Tom The definition of “Veterans” is “One who has grown old in service; one who has served in a war. A Veteran is one who has serviced his (her) term of service - hence the term Veteran.” The service men and women who are honored on Memorial Day are those who did not survive.

During Earth Week, my family and I picked up five bags of garbage, litter, cans and bottles along our rural road and a nearby seasonal dirt road in the neighborhood. Today, I walked my dog down this wooded, seasonal road and found several fresher, scattered and randomly tossed-out beer bottles and cans. This road is not a main thoroughfare, yet the few people who use this dirt road to apparently party or drink and drive, carelessly continue to toss their garbage and used cans and bottles along it. I’m disgusted!

A very special thank you to Elizabeth from Aaron Manor Nursing Home in Fairport. Elizabeth goes above and beyond in the kindness that she gives to the residents of Aaron Manor and their families. She is always kind and upbeat and willing to help anyone no matter what the circumstances. I have not been able to see my mom for the last two months because of this horrible pandemic which makes us as a family very stressed along with my mom who cannot understand why we cannot see her. Elizabeth keeps us updated every day. No matter how many times we call she is always willing “Give me liberty or give me death.” If you don’t practice social distancing, stay at home except for necessary things, like grocery shopping, etc., or wear a mask, then one day those words may end up having a literal meaning. You may very well succumb to the coronavirus and find yourself or someone you really love fighting for their lives. Do you balk at having to wear a seat belt? We are fighting a dreadful disease the likes of which many of us have never dealt with. Practical advice, such as wearing a mask when you may be in contact with someone else, is necessary to avoid the spread of this virus. Safety is a must, just like putting a seat belt on when you are in a vehicle. While shopping at [local store], I was pleased to see all the shoppers wearing masks. Most were also following the arrows and distancing guidelines. As I was about to leave, a couple came in with their two beautiful young school-age daughters. None of them had masks. What

I enjoy the GVPS and look forward to receiving it. Nicely designed, printed and informative. Good Job! - Thanks, Joe I’d like to take the time to thank the mask makers, the food will this mean to the girls? I’m sure they were met with unkind stares, if not words. How would their parents explain this to their children? How sad for the girls to not be taught common courtesy, respect nor personal hygiene. How sad to think that it will be the responsibility of their teachers to have to do this when schools reopen! Doctors and nurses are risking illness and death to treat the sick. Are these parents minimizing this, as well, by teaching their children indifference and callousness to others? With the heart-wrenching reports about young children dying from the coronavirus, it is truly disgusting that some only care about their socalled rights. Some people just don’t have common sense and only care about their rights, that is, until it’s their grandchild that gets sick from this deadly virus. “Give me liberty or give me death.” Watch out what you ask for. I guess you don’t believe in washing your hands more often and not touching your face. I guess that goes against the grain of your precious liberty. It is so stupid. I wouldn’t advertise how

deliverers for others, the nursing home staff, the firemen who drop off gloves and masks, the grocery store workers, the people in the neighborhood doing good things for others, the rock painters, the creative posters for stressed out mommies who can do fun activities with her kids because of you, the news broadcasters showing high school graduations, the bank tellers, the take out restaurants, the crisis hotline, the therapists, the professors, and so many other heroes out there. Thank you. I see you, and I appreciate what you do to help us keep calm and sane during a time of chaos. Our thanks to the two bag pipers who were at the village cemetery in Churchville on Memorial Day. You played the hymns of the military services along with Amazing Grace. Your music carried throughout the entire cemetery.

you fought for others’ liberties with the way you rant. It’s just common sense. Look at the unselfish acts of kindness many have shown, and learn a lesson in compassion, something I’m not hearing from your comments. I can’t believe all the comments about wearing masks and how it interferes with your rights and liberty. Others also have rights not to be contaminated or infected by people who refuse to do the right thing. What a laugh! Never mind your liberties, treat people the way you would want to be treated. What a shame for all those who have worked relentlessly to save the lives of others infected with the virus! A person can have the virus without any symptoms. It’s just the right thing to do unless you have some medical condition that prevents you from wearing one. The more people rant about their liberty and rights, the more sickening it gets. Hopefully, you never get the coronavirus, but better yet, that you don’t spread it to anyone else.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging. REAL ESTATE

Christine White of the Genesee Valley Penny Saver to be Recognized as One of Rochester’s Finest BY AMANDA DUDEK

O

n Monday, May 25th, Christine White, ad consultant for the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, received word she had been nominated for and is to be recognized as one of Rochester’s Finest. Each year, the Rochester’s Finest initiative – a program of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – honors an exceptional group of young professionals for their leadership, success, and commitment to positive community impact. Christine, who grew up in Bloomfield, earned her BA at Empire State College before she and her husband settled in Honeoye Falls. Passionate in her desire to help others achieve success, White quickly excelled in her position with the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, advancing from assisting advertising consultants to becoming one herself in less than a year. She currently works out of our Batavia office. “Throughout my education and career, I have always enjoyed helping people, being there for them, and supporting their success,” says Christine. “When I first started as an assistant, I quickly realized how much I enjoy developing relationships with people in our communities. Creating effective marketing campaigns and using our paper’s incomparable local presence to help business owners reach their goals is very satisfying.” Advertising not only gives her the opportunity to advance local businesses, but it also provides many opportunities for community involvement. “I enjoy attending local events, being involved with area businesses and being a part of the community,” Christine explains. “It’s not uncommon for local fire departments, the YWCA, agricultural societies and other businesses and organizations integral to our communities to visit the Genesee Valley Penny Saver offices for their advertising and printing needs. Working here makes me feel like a part of the local environment.” She continues: “When I am helping a not-for-profit, I am supporting a cause, and when I am assisting a company, I am helping a local business owner have the tools they need to be successful,” she continues. With her attention focused on her work, Christine was caught completely off guard when she was nominated for Rochester’s Finest. “When I found out, I was completely shocked,” she recalls. “I was nominated by this company just as I am about to celebrate my one-year anniversary with them this June. I was not seeking recognition, but I am so pleased to know that the company sees how hard I am working and how focused I am on my customers.” Christine looks forward to the support and professional development she will receive as she makes a difference in area communities with Rochester’s Finest. “I am excited to be a part of the seminars and activities as well as meeting new people and strengthening existing relationships,” she says. “The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is an incredible organization, and I look forward to working with them.” Since 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) has been working hard to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives. CFF

funds research and drug development, advocates treatment tailored to the individual, and works to guarantee access to specialized care based on ever-developing best practices. A rare, genetic disease, cystic fibrosis (CF) affects every organ and produces breathing difficulty. In those with CF, the defective gene Christine White, ad consultant at the causes a thick buildup of Genesee Valley Penny Saver and nominee mucus in the lungs, for CFF’s Rochester’s Finest pancreas, and other organs. Trapped bacteria in the lungs due to mucus clogs subsequently lead to life-threatening lung infections and just over 60 years ago, a much shorter life expectancy. World leaders in the search for a cure, CFF was founded by parents whose children have CF. At a time when the life expectancy for a child with CF was around six years old, these parents brought passionate determination to the fight for their children’s lives. Their relentless determination has resulted in tremendous advances in treatment, care, and advocacy. Rochester’s Finest works with CFF in their mission to find a cure for all people living with CF. Thanks to the cystic fibrosis drug therapies now available, and thanks to the Foundation and its supporters, many people with CF are living into their 40’s and beyond!
