HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

Having worked with his father, James Barefoot, who owned a water pump business since 1946, Jon decided to start an excavation business. He found his niche in digging trenches for water lines and excavating for septic tank installations. In 1971 Jon bought a septic pumping business from his Caledonia neighbor, Seth Powell, and the rest is history. Jon managed to create a business that combined his love of working with the dirt with his passion for problem solving and helping people. Jon Barefoot considers it an honor to have had the opportunity to wake up and go to work for the last 21,900 days (and counting) to serve his friends, his community, and his customers.

HI! This is

Delta! Delta is a German Shepherd and English Shepherd mix that was adopted. She has an older brother who doesn’t know if he likes her yet. But she’s starting to win him over with her amazing personality! She loves to play with her toys and is learning basic commands quite fast. She is so thankful her humans adopted her.

A BELOVED DOG, A STOLEN CAR AND... A HAPPY ENDING (NAPSI)—It started out as a normal day for Mary Harrison—until she briefly left her car running outside of her home with her shih tzu Molly in the backseat and went inside for just a second. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

“When Mary called in, I was taken aback with her car and dog being stolen,” said the tech expert who answered the call. “I really felt for her. I work at home and my two dogs are at my feet all day.” They pulled up Harrison’s account and saw that she had a Hum by Verizon device in her car. Hum is a vehicle diagnostic system from Verizon Connect. It takes the guesswork out of driving with connected car technology, so you can stay in touch with emergency services and your loved ones on the road.

For instance, if Hum detects a crash, it can notify emergency services and send help your way. With Hum’s vehicle diagnostics feature you can check your car’s health from your phone and detect issues before you go. You can also schedule maintenance reminders and Hum will text or e-mail you when it’s time for a tune-up or an oil change. And if your car is stolen, as in Mary’s case, Hum can send your car’s location to local law enforcement. “I knew with Hum there was a lot we could do to help her. I pulled up the step-by-step troubleshooting guide to reset her password and bring up the vehicle’s location on her phone. As soon as she saw the car on her phone, she started to cry.”

When she came back outside, however, her car—and Molly—were gone. She called Verizon to see if her phone could help track her car, and a Verizon customer service representative saved the day.

The car was not far from Harrison’s home. She could have walked there, but the customer service representative advised her to stay safe, call the police, and recover the car together. When Harrison got to the car, her dog was still there, safe inside. “It made me feel great to be able to help her,” the customer service representative said. “I know that if it were my dog in the car, that would be my biggest concern, too. I wouldn’t even care about my car or my stuff, just getting my dog back safely. I was so impressed by how quickly and accurately Hum found her car. It’s awesome that we have this great technology available.” Learn More: For further facts about how helpful Hum can be, go to www. Hum.com.

Valley Fuel makes generous donation in support of area Veterans! (l-r) Lynn Reagle, Bill LaVallee, Bob Banfield, and Kevin Mark

Valley Fuel Gives Generously to Support Local Veterans BY AMANDA DUDEK

W

hen Bill LaVallee became the owner of Valley Propane & Fuels in 2013, he also inherited a legacy of patriotic giving, something he is only too happy to continue. For approximately 12 years, Valley Propane & Fuels has donated funds to Veterans through the American Legion. This year, LaVallee spread the funds even further. On July 15th, Bill LaVallee gathered in front of its Warrior Truck with Lynn Reagle, Commander of the Dansville American Legion; Kevin Mark, Commander of the Wayland American Legion; and Veteran employee, Bob Banfield, U. S. Coast Guard (1969-1973), to present each Legion with a check for $1,000 respectively. LaVallee also donated $1,000 this year to the Bath VA Rehabilitation and Addiction Program at the Bath Veterans Hospital. For Mark and Reagle, their appreciation cannot be overstated, particularly in light of the increased need they saw during the pandemic. “It is hard to express in words the caring and support Valley Fuel gives to the Veterans,” stated Reagle. “They are not afraid to put their name behind supporting our Veterans, and to someone like myself whose entire family is military, that means so much.” “Valley Fuel has continued to donate for years, and we have been able to do so much for our Veterans with those funds,” said Mark. “Continuing this legacy shows their commitment to our communities,” adding he hopes area neighbors will see the company’s generosity. “This is 100% patriotism and Americanism right here.”

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Mark confirmed seeing an increased need and a resolve to help. “Quite a few years ago, we started our own Veterans Aid chapter,” he explained. “We keep funds available here for local Veterans in need, whether that need arises from tragedy such as a housefire or the pressures of life like an overwhelming bill.” “Valley Fuel does an awesome job for us, and they give a discount to Veterans, so we try to keep their donated funds local for our men and women right here” Mark continued. “That is why I brought the flag today because that is what we are here for: to make certain this money goes to our Veterans where they really need it.”

Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com:

“We will baby our Warrior Truck and keep it running as long as we can,” said LaVallee. “Our employees take pride in it, painting it and touching it up as needed.” It is clear the truck, which frequently participates in events and parades, is not retiring any time soon.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Reagle also added his intention to fund Project Christmas, another cause to which Valley Fuel frequently donates. “We served 104 local children last year,” he said. “During COVID, we supported a lot of people who needed assistance.”

LaVallee, also a Legion member, says Valley Fuel will continue to donate to Veterans through the American Legion, commending Commander Kevin Mark for his efforts. “The hard work, dedication, and everything he puts into the Wayland post is very impressive to me,” said LaVallee while also recognizing the outstanding work of Commander Lynn Reagle. “This is a noble cause, and we are going to continue to give back to our Veterans.”

Banfield concurred. “This is important. It shows patriotism, concern for our country, and appreciation for our Veterans and the sacrifices they made, big or small,” he added, standing against the well-known Valley Fuel Warrior Truck. When asked if there are any plans to replace the vehicle which has become a symbol of the company’s patriotism and support of Veterans, he replied, “We just put a new engine in it!”

Meanwhile, both Legion Commanders have worthy goals for the donation funds. Reagle plans to continue some of the Dansville Legion’s current projects. “We have an immortal fund which takes care of the park down by the football field, which honors everyone who has joined,” he shared. “We also just finished our Immortal

Wall inside our Legion which lists all of the members who died in active duty from WWI to the present.” The Immortal Wall can be viewed whenever the Legion is open.

STAY SAFE IN BRIGHT DRIVING CONDITIONS Weather often contributes to motor vehicle accidents. Snow, rain and other factors that compromise drivers’ vision can make driving hazardous, but there’s a dark side to sunny skies as well.

AUTO SECTION

Glare from the sun can compromise drivers’ vision and lead to driving mishaps, regardless of drivers’ experience or skill level. The sun can pack a powerful punch any time during the day, but can be especially hazardous in the early morning sunrise and late-afternoon sunset.

Div. Of Upland Enterprises Inc.

A 2017 study published in the journal Medicine titled, “Life-threatening motor vehicle crashes in bright sunlight” looked at the risks posed by bright sunlight. Researchers found that the risk of a life-threatening crash was 16 percent higher during bright sunlight than during normal weather. Researchers concluded that bright sunlight may create visual illusions that lead to driver error, including poor distance judgement.

Plentiful sunlight is often a hallmark of spring and summer, but sun-blindness is a real concern for drivers. As anyone who has turned into blazing sun only to discover their windshield has been rendered opaque by sun glare can attest, driving on sunny days can be challenging. Unfortunately, the sun might create substantial glare during rush hour, making driving during these times more dangerous and accidents more likely.

Boredom is certainly one of the worst of afflictions. Try to imagine how the dreary hours must drag when one is totally bored! Happily, there is no reason why anyone should ever be bored. In this wonderful world there are so many wonders we can explore… so many more delightful things to know about than we can possibly investigate. It starts with childhood. The curious child is happy as he inquires and learns. There is no reason why we should ever lose this childlike thirst for knowledge, especially since curiosity leads to happiness. We are pleased that most of the families that come to us do so because of the recommendation of friends whom we have been privileged to serve. Ask your friends about us.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

No, Life Has Not Returned to Normal A recent survey concluded that we seniors are ready to go back out into the world, to resume our former pre-COVID activities. I suspect the poll questions weren’t asked of seniors in my part of New England. We are not, for the most part, ready to get back to what we were doing before. We learned to talk to family and friends on internet conferences and managed the software quite well. We explored new hobbies with materials that arrived by mail since we weren’t going into stores. We mastered complicated recipes (with ingredients picked up curbside at the grocery), and we renewed our interest in chess and other games, playing online. We explored parts of our state we hadn’t seen before because we could safely drive around -- as long as we didn’t get out of the car. Our senior center is still holding the men’s Monday lunch in the parking lot, socially distanced, of course. The French language class still isn’t meeting because it didn’t work out well trying to hear and speak French while spaced out across the parking lot with cars going by. The art classes are still done remotely because it’s difficult to do watercolor painting outside with the breeze blowing, and no one is ready to go inside the building. A few fast phone calls revealed that, no, the American Legion hall still isn’t open. The auto dealership is trying to restrict potential buyers to test driving only three cars because each one has to be sanitized after customers take one out for a spin. The deli on Main Street is still taking orders only at the front window and doesn’t know when it will open for indoor eating. If a poll were done here, I suspect it would conclude that, no, we’re not ready to come out yet. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Honestly assess whether or not you can finish the job. Do-it-yourselfers may have the abilities to complete a project, but they should not let their pride get in the way of their ultimate goal, which is the completion of the project. In addition to money, time or lack thereof, is often the culprit behind stalled projects. Homeowners with full-time jobs, families or both may not be able to find the time to complete a job in a timely fashion. If the project has been stuck in neutral and no sudden windfall of free time is on the horizon, start contacting contractors to finish the job for you.

Lean on mulch to retain moisture. Mulch is often considered an aesthetically appealing addition to a landscape, but it serves a practical purpose as well. Mulch retains moisture during the hot summer months, reducing the need to water -- a valuable benefit during a drought restriction. Mulch also makes it difficult for weeds to grow, which can keep homeowners from spending hot summer afternoons pulling weeds out of their gardens and flower beds.

Smart watering conserves water and saves money Let well-fed lawns go dormant during drought. Lengthy droughts tend to be accompanied by water restrictions, and such restrictions can frustrate homeowners who don’t want to see all of the hard work they’ve put in to this point go to waste. But grass that has thus far been well cared for can withstand drought and still recover when rains once again fall and temperatures cool come autumn. If you plan to let the lawn go dormant, keep kids, pets and visitors off the grass, as dormant lawns are highly susceptible to damage.

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work.

We do driveways and parking lots. Locally Owned Servicing All Counties ~ Fully Insured

Servicing Livingston County for 10 years!

For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job.

Service guaranteed for 1 year.

585-245-3566

Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees. To learn more about Carhartt’s latest pants and knee pads, visit www.Carhartt.com. To watch the brand’s latest video, “61 Workers, One Mission,” visit the Carhartt channel on YouTube. TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said. Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively. Learn More: For more information, go to www.vendini.com.

Help plants survive sizzling summer heat Move plants when possible. Plant location can affect their chances of surviving summer heat. Driveways lined with flowers or other plants may look nice, but driveways exposed to the sun can radiate heat at temperatures that exceed the temperatures noted on the thermometer. If possible, move plants to locations on your property that are less exposed to the heat and/or less likely to be affected by the heat. Move container plants beneath trees on hot days, and consider summer heat waves before planting new flower beds.

HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Do not set air conditioner thermostats at lower than normal temperatures when turning them on. The DOE notes that setting thermostats at lower than normal temperatures when turning air conditioners on will not cool homes any faster than setting them at typical temperatures. Such a strategy will only lead to excessive energy consumption and higher energy bills.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.

CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Energy bills tend to be high in summertime, when many people crank up their air conditioners in an attempt to combat the heat. For some households, higher energy bills might be stretching their budgets, while others might be looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprints. Conserving energy can help homeowners save money and help the planet at the same time. And reducing energy consumption in the summer does not require men and women to sacrifice comfort in the name of conservation. In fact, various strategies can help homeowners and apartment dwellers reduce their summertime energy consumption.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 28TH

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Keep a pretty basket by your front door for anything you need to take along when you leave. This can be store returns, backpacks, exercise gear for the gym, your sunglasses, whatever. When you leave the house, check the basket!

There will be a townwide parade starting at 5:30pm on Wednesday, July 28th. Forming at 5:30pm & stepping off at 6:00pm.

* “Necklaces can be stored together without tangling if you thread each one through a straw. You can cut the straw to a shorter length for choker-length necklaces or bracelets. No knots!” -- I.A. in Arizona

Parade Route: Starting on Garden St. in South Lima to South Lima Rd. to Poplar Hill Rd. to Woodruff Rd., North on 15A through the Village to Corby Rd. to Bragg St. to Martin Rd. to York St., south to 5&20 then west through the Village to Michigan Ave. to Rainbow Lane, to Meadowview, back to 5&20 to Dalton Rd. and end in the Elim Gospel Church Parking lot. This is a driving parade. No walkers as this is a long route.

* If you have a little bit of touchup paint left in your gallon can, transfer it to a mason jar. Write the exact color and brand on the lid, and it will be much easier to store.

All Lima Town and Village businesses and organizations are encouraged to have a vehicle in the parade. For info, visit limafest.org

* “Our basement was dark and a little claustrophobic. My husband painted it a lovely sunny yellow and that helped, but it needed something else. I took a photo of the spectacular view at our son’s house in Montana, and had the photo blown up. We mounted it on the wall with some dummy curtains! It’s perfect, and it reminds me of him.” -- R.W. in New York * Need to chill a bottle of wine quickly? Wet a kitchen towel, then wrap it around the wine. Twist the ends to secure, and put the whole thing in the freezer for 30 minutes. * Great ways to remove stuck labels: nail polish remover (NOT for use on plastics), WD-40 oil, soaking in hot water, rubbing alcohol.

UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES (NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task. Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money.

“We Don’t Just List, We Sell!

How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment. You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also: • Easily cut • Noncombustible • Excellent for sound absorbency • Not likely to rot or promote growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product.

Sunlight is needed to engage vitamin D production in the body, but too much sun exposure can do more harm than good. Ultraviolet, or UV, rays from the sun and other sources, such as tanning beds, are the primary cause of skin cancer. Exposure also can lead to sunburns, premature aging/wrinkling and eye damage.

Summer health and beauty guidelines Try tinted moisturizer. A carefree, breezy look often means not being weighed down by a lot of makeup. It may be possible to skip foundation and rely only on concealer to cover up small blemishes or alleviate dark circles under the eyes. Another option to try is tinted moisturizer, which can keep skin supple and offer a light amount of color to even out pigment. BB creams also can provide you with an all-in-one beauty product, as such creams frequently contain sunscreen, color tinting and anti-aging ingredients.

DID YOU KNOW? Keeping newborn babies safe is a priority for mothers, fathers and other caregivers. Various ailments can afflict newborns, and one many new parents may be unfamiliar with is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. According to Hackensack Meridian Health, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV produces symptoms similar to the common cold or the flu and can include runny nose, cough and trouble breathing. In severe cases, particularly in infants, a baby may need to be hospitalized if his or her breathing is greatly compromised. Examples of severe infections include bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia. RSV also can affect adults, but healthy adults are usually only affected by mild symptoms, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In such instances, recovery can take between one and two weeks. Researchers are looking into immunizing pregnant women against RSV as a way to help protect babies from the virus. ATTENTION Town of York Consolidated Water Customers

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Paraplegic Battles UTIs ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a paraplegic due to a spinal cord injury back in 1979. I battle one UTI after another, and I am becoming immune to most antibiotics. Why the constant infections? My urologist just ordered a CT scan, but seems uninterested in me as a patient. I am sick of being sick. I straight catheterize four times a day usually. It’s getting very hard for them to match the antibiotic to the culture. At times the infections are so bad I get “foggy headed.” These times I am in misery. The last time I went to the ER hoping it wasn’t sepsis. They gave me antibiotics. I can’t keep running to the ER. My copays are too much. Maybe I need a doctor who specializes in working with people who have a spinal cord injury. -- Anon. ANSWER: Regular drainage of the bladder with a “straight catheter” is the most effective way to reduce the risk of urine infections in a person with a spinal cord injury, but it is not perfect. People may still get bacteria in the bladder. Although it may be worthwhile to review your catheterization technique with an expert, it’s possible to get infections even with perfect technique. You haven’t become immune to antibiotics, but the frequent use of powerful antibiotics will make you colonized with resistant bacteria, so that if you do get an infection, it’s likely to be with a difficult-totreat organism. The CT scan is a good idea to see whether there is an anatomic reason for recurrent (or persistent) infections. I am disappointed to hear your urologist does not seem to be doing his or her best for you. Recurrent infections are dangerous. Becoming foggy headed is a sign of serious systemic infection, and sepsis (a dysfunctional body response to infection) is life-threatening. Some people take antibiotics to prevent infection. Often, these are rotated to reduce resistance. A urologist experienced in spinal cord injury, perhaps in consultation with an infectious disease doctor, would be ideal.

The Town of York Water Department will be flushing the municipal water main and hydrants beginning Monday, August 2nd through Friday, August 13th. Flushing will take place during the hours of 7:30 a.m.3:30 p.m. The work involves little or no interruption of service, although a slight discoloration of the water and potential drop in water pressure may occur in areas where flushing is underway. Cloudiness will not affect the drinking quality of the water. Thank you for your cooperation and patience during this process. Dated: July 1, 2021 York Water Department

PREVENT CO POISONING (NAPSI)—Each year, more than 400 people die from unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and more than 20,000 visit the emergency room. CO poisoning can be prevented with a few precautions: What To Do • Never use portable electric generators, charcoal grills or other similar devices inside your home, garage or in any confined area that can let carbon monoxide collect.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Why the U.S. Ban on Dog Imports? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been working for months to purchase a purebred dog located in Ukraine. Today, the transaction was put on hold by the breeder, who said that dog imports are being banned by the U.S. What is going on? -- Nadiya in NYC DEAR NADIYA: What happened is that dogs are being imported into the U.S. with rabies certificates that are fraudulent. After at least 450 imported dogs were found to have fake certificates, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention took action in June and temporarily banned the import of dogs from more than 100 countries* with a high rabies risk, including Ukraine, for at least one year. According to the CDC’s official notice, in 2020 it identified a significant increase in the number of imported dogs that were denied entry into the U.S. from high-risk countries. Due to reduced flight schedules, dogs denied entry are facing longer wait times to be returned to their country of departure, leading to illness and even death. Why did the number of fraudulent rabies certificates rise so quickly? In a word, the pandemic. During lockdown, demand for dogs (and cats) soared. Worried about the risk of animals being abandoned when their owners went back to the office, many shelters drastically raised fees and other requirements for adoption. Demand for imported dogs rose. Unfortunately, there are no options for those who intend to purchase or adopt a dog from one of these countries. If you try to import the dog anyway, or even hand-carry it across the border, it will be denied entry and shipped back home at your expense. It’s a bummer, but necessary to reduce the risk of rabies spreading in the U.S. *For a map showing banned countries, go to www.statista.com and search for “CDC bans dog imports.” To read the official notice, go to www.cdc.gov and search for “high-risk dog ban.”

IT & NETWORKING SOLUTIONS

• Have your chimney, fireplace and woodstoves inspected before every heating season. • Turn off space heaters before leaving a room or going to sleep. • Never run your car engine for more than a few moments in a garage, even if the door to the outside is open. Fumes can build up quickly and can spread to the living area of your home.

CALL MORGAN: 585-447-2232

• Look for clues that home appliances may be malfunctioning. Common indicators include decreased hot water supply, soot on appliances, moisture inside windows, and furnaces not heating properly. • Install at least one carbon monoxide detector, connected to a monitoring center that operates 24/7, on every level of your home. Real protection comes from ADT—keeping your family safe from poisonous CO gas that can cause dizziness, unconsciousness and possibly death if undetected.

Bravo, Teachers! I would like to recognize Alexander CSD teachers, essential staffing and all employees for the amazing job done during a challenging and uncertain school year resulting from COVID. Without your dedication and flexibility, our children would have suffered. Your efforts do not go unrecognized by the community. Thank you for all you do for the children! E. W.

Regarding a recently published article regarding proper display of the flag— I have some additional information to add to that. The flag should not be displayed at night unless lighted, nor should it be displayed during “inclement weather.” The flag should be properly disposed of when damaged or worn out (contact your Legion for details). The entire code is available on the American Legion website. Also, no drawings should be done on the US flag. This, to me, includes the superimposing of various images, animals, sports insignia, human portraits, etc. Also, personally, the use of the flag as a political statement and changing the colors on the flag is disrespectful. This is not the flag for which millions have made the ultimate sacrifice. If one wishes to show support for another organization, all of them have insignia that could be displayed on a plain banner.

Petty Rant Shame on you for your rant against our law enforcement officers. Those parking laws are in place in case of a fire or terrorism incident, and it doesn’t matter if the building is vacant. Do you think our police officers can choose which laws to enforce and when to enforce them? It’s all about public safety. Be a good citizen and follow the rules.

Neighbor’s Noisy Truck In the [local] area we have a neighbor with his very large truck that he revs out loudly on purpose and goes down the road all hours of the day and night. It’s extremely loud, and we are all afraid someone will get hit eventually. Everyone complains, but it just goes on and on. Please be considerate of your neighbors. The village is not the place for the noise or speeding, especially when you are by a school.

Hamlin Post Office I want to say that I appreciate the attention and service I get from the employees when I go in for my stamps. Sherry was kind enough to put my stamps in a large plastic sleeve to keep my five books of stamps together. It really came in handy with the large number of stamps that I purchased. With all that is going on in the world we live in, it is always nice to be treated kindly. Hamlin Post Office is the best!

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Embrace relaxation methods. The APA recommends professionals coping with workplace stress embrace techniques that can effectively alleviate stress. Such techniques include meditation and deep-breathing exercises and can help workers develop their ability to focus purposefully on a single activity. That improved focus may help workers better navigate hectic working environments without succumbing to the stress such environments can produce.

NOW HIRING

(NAPSI)—“Today, nearly 4 million Americans have a service-connected disability. At a time when many employers are struggling to fill positions, hiring veterans with disabilities can boost diversity and inclusion efforts,” explained Jeff Hall, national employment director for DAV (Disabled American Veterans). For example, Dave Ellis found it difficult to get a job after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army. “I had a severe back injury, but I also carried mental scars from active duty,” he said. After six months of searching, he was able to find a supportive company that understands and values the traits that come from military training, including job-ready skills, tested leadership abilities and a mission-focused work ethic.

Dietary Aides (Days) Afternoon Cook FT and PT Nurses and Aides

For others, however, it can be a struggle. In fact, a survey in The Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation found that 57 percent of veterans with disabilities transitioning to the civilian workforce feared hiring discrimination due to their disability. “The reality is that many of America’s businesses, big and small alike, recognize the importance of hiring veterans with disabilities, but often don’t know where to begin,” added Hall.

To inquire about positions, please call or email James Donofrio, 226-2225 or jdonofrio@avonnursinghome.com

To address this need, DAV has published “The Veteran Advantage: DAV Guide to Hiring and Retaining Veterans with Disabilities.” This free, comprehensive guide is the result of more than four years of study about what the veteran community contributes to the workforce and how hiring veterans, especially disabled ones, can improve a company’s bottom line. The 36-page publication, which can be downloaded at http://dav.la/jobs, offers best practices and helpful tools for employers. But it goes further, helping to correct misperceptions and inspire more organizations to hire from this talent pool. Content includes statistics about veterans with disabilities, in-depth onboarding and retention strategies, a practical checklist for employers, and explanations of financial incentives, tax credits and other support.

WHY IT’S WISE TO HIRE VETERANS WITH DISABILITIES

The Guide also highlights powerful testimonials of veterans thriving in successful careers, and case studies from employers who benefit from having disabled veterans in their workplace. Nationally respected companies such as First Data and USAA apply the findings within their own internal human resources departments and hiring teams. There are also free and helpful resources that veterans themselves can take advantage of to help with the transition into a civilian career. For example, DAV holds free career fairs throughout the country for veterans and their spouses. Details are available at http://dav.la/jobs. “While our nation’s veterans, particularly those who have been injured in service, are faced with unique challenges, they also offer the skill sets, loyalty and dedication needed to help successfully power America’s economy,” said Hall.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

(NAPSI)—The global pandemic brought home to many people just how interconnected the world has become. This is true about the need to protect the environment, as well. According to the National Institutes of Health, the way to preserve human health is by maintaining the environment because polluted air, water and land encourages such sicknesses as asthma and lead poisoning, while global warming fosters the spread of disease. Fortunately, throughout the country, efforts large and small are helping to resolve this.

What’s Being Done For example, one major American corporation with a long, proud history of environmental sustainability and a strong track record of action and success has raised the bar on its environmental commitments and accelerated the progress of short- and long-term goals that meet or exceed environmental regulations. As Marc Bitzer, Chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corporation put it. “As we continue to navigate the impact of COVID-19, the health and safety of our employees and communities remain our priority. We strongly believe that our sustainability efforts are as important now as ever. These efforts are guided by a clear mission to earn trust and create demand while in constant pursuit of improving life at home.” To that end, the company has: • Reduced its absolute plant emissions by 18% by investing in efficiency and renewable energy; • Achieved zero waste to landfill in eight plants across three regions; • Accomplished a global waste-torecycling rate of 96%; and • Developed an innovative solution to reuse water from an existing chiller that saves 31 million gallons of water each year. What You Can Do For your part, you can help the environment these four ways: 1.Get your car a tune-up. Properly maintained vehicles get better gas mileage and emit fewer pollutants. 2.Plant a tree. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. 3.Run the dishwasher and clothes washer only when you have full loads. 4.Don’t let the water run while you shave or brush your teeth.
