STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A 7-year-old boy had long complained about his swollen and aching jaw, and small wonder: Surgeons at the Saveetha Dental College and Hospital in Chennai, India, found 526 teeth crammed inside his mouth! After removing a seven-ounce, “well-defined bag-like mass” from his jaw containing hundreds of miniature teeth, it took the team five hours to carefully search for and count all of them. The hospital asserted that it was “the first ever case to be documented worldwide, where so many minute teeth were found in a single individual.”

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Roll scarves around cardboard tubes to store flat. You’ll skip the wrinkles and be able to find the scarf you want without much fuss. * On a home improvement kick? You’re not alone. Here’s a wallpapering tip from way back: If your wallpaper is applied with adhesive, add a few drops of food coloring to the paste. It will give it a slight tint that will not be visible when dried. Now you can be sure that the adhesive makes it all the way to the edge of the paper for best results! * “Ironing intricate sleeves or other difficult shapes can be made easier with the use of an oven mitt. Slip the mitt over your hand, put your hand on one side of a fabric to create a flat area to iron. Use care and go slowly, and you’ll get a good press.” -- E.R. in Missouri * Bright strips of tape can be a great safety addition to the edges of stairs. Even better is bright, textured, reflective tape for low-light areas, like basements or porch steps. The bright color makes the edges visible in daylight; the reflection does the same at night. A bit of texture makes sure they’re not slippery. * “Here’s a great sewing tip from my grandma: When you are attaching buttons, hooks, snaps, etc., tape them to the fabric with transparent tape. You can sew right through it, and it will help keep the item from slipping around while you get it secured.” -- A.J. in Pennsylvania * “Now that my baby is entering her messy eating phase, I cut up several burp cloths to make wipe up cloths for the high chair. They are soft enough for a full face wipe and sturdy enough to sop up baby food and go right in the washer.” -- P.W. in Texas GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

Master

Gardeners

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

I just started a vegetable garden and a few of my lettuces are growing so tall that they started flowering. Should I take them out, cut them in half or leave them? Bolting lettuce - You have some choices here that you can make. Lettuce is one of the cool-season crops, not a good summer season crop. When the weather gets warm and the days get long, lettuce is inclined to bolt or “go to seed”. When this happens, the leaves get very bitter. You can cut them back to the ground, leaving the roots intact, and they should re-sprout when the weather cools a bit if they have

consistent moisture. You can donate the tops to someone who has rabbits, guinea pigs or chickens. They will eat them readily. You can let them go to seed and collect the seed for next year’s crop. This also helps pollinating insects as they visit the flowers for nectar and pollen. Leaving them there, if you have the room. can also serve to act as an insect trap crop to help protect other crops such as broccoli and cabbage. You can, of course, pull them up SEND YOUR QUESTIONS TO OUR EXPERTS! Your question(s) will be answered directly and start over, but some of the other options, I think, are more fun. I would & may be featured in our column! not cut them in half. Ask them today at: GVPENNYSAVER.COM/GARDEN

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Moving Won't Solve Social Isolation Our experiences with the coronavirus have changed many of us. We've been locked down, scared to shop, startled at the number of people who refuse to wear a mask in public, and worse, we've been socially isolated. Now we want something new. My email confirms it: Many of us believe we want to live in a different place, one that will surely be better, and retirement communities are the top choice. We have various reasons for feeling this way. Many of us have been hit with serious lockdown depression and believe that it's from being so isolated. Maybe the grandchildren want us closer than the other end of a Zoom conference call, and we certainly can't fly there to visit. Maybe we want to live somewhere we perceive is safer. However, as enticing as that idea is, before packing up, be sure what's on the other end: Check the health stats in your new chosen location. No need to go from one area with a few cases of the virus into a major hotspot. In many places the numbers are just now starting to climb. Check the rules in the new location. Some areas are still locked down more than others. In some places a move doesn't qualify as essential travel.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

Livingston Eye Care

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Blood in the Urine Won’t Just Go Away ---

Dr. Jennifer J. Dotterweich Optometrist

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 92-year-old man in better-thanaverage health. I have had two episodes of blood in my urine in the past two months. I know this isn’t normal. At my age, I’d just like to make believe it didn’t happen. What’s my future like? -- Anon. ANSWER: Your future will shortly include, I hope, a visit to your regular doctor. Blood in the urine often is due to a urine infection or a kidney stone, but in older men, there is always a concern about a tumor, whether of the kidney, bladder or prostate. Pretending it didn’t happen is not a good solution, and your doctors will certainly take your age into account when looking at diagnostic possibilities and treatments. Most cases will turn out to be not much to worry about, so the sooner you get in, the sooner you can find out what’s going on and see what steps may be necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Recently, my acupuncturist suggested that I try hyaluronic acid capsules for the arthritis in my hands, feet, back, neck and hips. I had heard of hyaluronic acid years ago and checked it out. Since it promotes cell growth, I assume it can’t differentiate from good cells or cancer cells, so I avoided trying it. Is this really safe to take? -- C.F. ANSWER: Hyaluronic acid is indicated for use via injection, especially into the knee for arthritis symptoms, but is also used for other purposes, such as a filler in cosmetic surgery. For knee injection, it appears safe and moderately effective. It isn’t thought to work by promoting cell growth but rather by replacing synovial fluid, a fluid that acts as a kind of shock absorber, protecting the cartilage, bone and nerves of the knee. There have been studies evaluating oral hyaluronic acid, and one from Japan in 2012 showed a very modest improvement compared with a placebo. I wouldn’t recommend oral hyaluronic acid based on the studies done so far. There are many reports in basic cancer research on the ability of cancer cells to grow in conditions of high hyaluronic acid; however, this does NOT mean that taking oral hyaluronic acid promotes growth of cancer cells. As far as I can tell, there is no evidence that links oral hyaluronic acid to increased cancer risk. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from constipation for years, and after consulting with a gastrointestinal specialist, I was prescribed MiraLAX. I take it every morning and have added fiber to my diet. The program has been successful. How wise is it to continue MiraLAX indefinitely? Should I worry about side effects? It has been quite pleasant to be free of constipation worries. -- Anon. ANSWER: MiraLAX is a non-absorbable chemical called polyethylene glycol. It passes through your system, bringing water with it, which makes stool less hard and easier to pass. It is very safe for short-term use. If used excessively, it can pull sodium and potassium out of a person’s system. If you are taking in enough fiber, it should be possible to decrease the MiraLAX without worrying about constipation again, but it’s OK to use MiraLAX as needed. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Periostitis: Periostitis is commonly known as “shin splints.” This is an overuse injury that occurs in athletes who are engaged in activities that involve rapid deceleration. Periostitis causes inflammation of the band of tissue that surrounds bones known as the periosteum, and typically affects people who repetitively jump, run or lift heavy weights. To head off potential pain in the shins, young athletes can gradually build up their tolerance for physical activity. Supportive shoes or orthotic inserts may also help. Incorporating cross-training into a regimen also can work.

Habitat for Humanity: Helping Livingston County Families

Achieve Homeownership Dreams BY AMANDA DUDEK

S

ubstandard housing is a reality for many lower income families in Livingston County. Unstable housing due to inadequate space for the number of occupants, properties in significant disrepair, high rental costs, temporary housing and homelessness all challenge the stability of today’s hardworking but less financially well-off families. There are no simple answers, but one organization works hard, together with these families, each year to bring homeownership within reach: Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County. Established in 1998, Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County believes every family deserves a better place to live, and in fact its stated mission is to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope. “Everyone should have a home,” said local Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors President, David Wallace. “It is so important that children have a stable home in which to grow up. If they do not, it can affect them for generations.” The benefits can be equally long lasting and extend beyond the families involved. “Having a home that is safe and secure does wonders,” said Wallace. “We have already seen how much of an impact that has, on the kids especially. It is also good for the community as it helps to grow the tax base.” Of course, volunteers do not simply build and give away houses. Families in need must meet certain eligibility criteria for Habitat’s homeownership program based on three requirements, including need, willingness to partner, and ability to pay an affordable mortgage. Practically, this also means having steady income, a certain minimum credit score and contributing 200-300 sweat equity hours with the help of their family and friends. “A lot of people believe we give houses away; we do not,” stated Wallace. “We give a hand up, not a handout. You have to qualify for a mortgage, have decent credit, put in sweat equity–there is a process.” He further noted the misconception that Habitat for Humanity was started by Jimmy Carter. It was not, although he did popularize it. Once families have been approved by a selection committee, they are able to partner with their local Habitat for Humanity to build safe, decent, affordable housing. These partnering families are involved in every step of this process, and it is their labor alongside other volunteers which makes their secure housing dream into a homeownership reality. Since its founding, Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County has partnered with 20 such families, and it has just broken ground on its 21st home in Piffard. It is also rehabilitating its 22nd home in Springwater. “I have seen our partner families receive their homes,” shared Wallace. “In one family, their four children were so excited about having bedrooms. Another child was thrilled about no longer needing to share a bedroom. It has a fairly big impact on them! You can certainly see it in the children’s faces and in the new homeowner’s faces when you hand them the key and say, “This is your house; you own it. It’s a big celebration!” Grants and donations also provide much needed support for Habitat for Humanity homes and families. “We have several faithful donors,” Wallace shared. “We also receive gifts in kind. Many national and local companies donate resources such as a stove and a refrigerator, tools, roof shingles and other necessary materials while others give us sizable discounts and still others donate their time and expertise as needed. Several masons also donate their time laying the foundations and working on the cellar. Volunteers are our heart and backbone. We could not do this without them!”

Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County thanks the many generous volunteers who make their mission a reality!

The pursuit of homeownership is not without its struggles. Often families at the lower end of the income guidelines cannot afford the mortgage and taxes on a new home. Enter rehabilitated homes. “The last thing we want to do is to set families up for failure,” explained Wallace. “Rehabilitated homes sell for less than brand-new houses, resulting in lower mortgage payments. We are in a relationship with the Livingston County Land Bank, which allows up to purchase properties at a minimal cost. The home we are working on in Springwater is the first one we have done working with them.” Even as we make our way through COVID-19, Habitat for Humanity looks to a future where they can help even more people find housing stability through homeownership. “We hope to continue on forever,” Wallace stated. “We would like to find ways to serve those on the lower end of our income brackets because everyone should have a home to call their own.” “We definitely need volunteers,” he continued. “We would like to encourage our next generations to join us and help. We not only build houses, but we host “Brush with Kindness, fixing minor things, like a broken window, for those who cannot. We would like to expand and help even more families, and it takes volunteers to make that happen.” If you are interested in volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County or if you would like to apply for their Homeownership Program, visit their website at www.livingstoncountyhabitat.org. “Every hand makes a difference. Every gift builds strength and stability. Every home is a foundation for a better life.”

MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT While new homes are being built to be more energy efficient than ever before, thanks to a growing green building movement and increasingly strict building codes, the age of existing dwellings continues to present challenges. More than 40 percent of the housing stock in the United States was built before 1969 and simply wouldn’t stand up to today’s standards. Yet, much can be done to help homeowners improve their building envelope to reduce energy use and increase efficiency.

A lot of people ask why fall is for planting. Fall has distinct planting benefits. Autumn’s cooler air temperatures are easier on both plants and gardeners. The soil is still warm, allowing roots to grow until the ground freezes. Fall has more good days for planting than spring does, when rain and other unpredictable weather can make working the soil impossible. Furthermore, our nurseries that we select our quality perennial, annual, ornamental, and tree products from would rather sell their remaining product than store their stock over winter. With that in mind, our nurseries that we work with pass along a discount on their stock to us, and we like to pass that along to our exsiting and new customers. With that being said, don’t hesitate. Call our office today or e-mail us at the link below to start rejuvinating and/or building a new landscape with some beautiful spectacular plantings to your home or business!

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Start off on solid financial footing. It’s important that homeowners who want to upgrade their homes enter the home improvement process with a realistic grasp of their finances. Many home improvement projects stall when homeowners run out of money. Homeowners can avoid such unfortunate situations by only beginning a project they know they can afford. Whether funding a project with a loan or savings or a combination of both, homeowners should make an honest assessment of what they can afford to commit to a given project. If the amount of money available does not add up to the estimated cost of the project, delay the project now or you might be facing a stalled project down the road. Page 22

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME Family Owned & Operated. Est. 1978

(NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time.

FREE ESTIMATES

1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.

2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE.

ROOFING, SIDING, GUTTERS Control mold when using air conditioning Clean up the mold. Homeowners may be able to clean up a minor mold problem, but larger issues are best left to a professional. Exposure to mold can put a person and the entire household at risk, especially if mold spores are disrupted. Air conditioning repair companies and mold-removal specialists are better equipped to clean and contain mold. If you clean a window unit, make sure that all components are completely dry before reassembling the parts. Damp conditions can lead to more mold.

Take note of your physical condition. Many people garden alone, so it’s important that gardeners learn the symptoms of heat-related illnesses. The CDC notes that elevated body temperatures, headache, rapid pulse, dizziness, nausea, and/or confusion are some common symptoms of heat-related illnesses. Gardeners should go indoors the moment any such symptoms appear.

Some retired racing greyhounds may exhibit behaviors typical of puppies. The Greyhound Project notes that, thanks to their early training, retired racing greyhounds have never been without the company of other greyhounds. As a result, when spending time alone for the first time in their lives, retired greyhounds may make up for lost time as a puppy by exhibiting puppy-like behaviors such as chewing. This need not cause alarm in new greyhound parents, as the dogs typically outgrow the behavior very quickly.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments. “A ship in the harbor is safe… but that is not what ships are for…” ~ John A. Shedd

Raymond S. Simzer Sr. July 17, 2020

A turtle is most safe when all of him is tucked into his shell, but he makes no progress until he sticks his neck out. There is always some hazard in everything we do. If we get up in the morning, we may slip in the shower and break a leg. If we never get out of bed, we may develop bedsores. Life is a constant succession of risk-taking activities. We should not let this dismay us. We should do everything possible to minimize the risks, then go ahead, if we expect to make any progress. Let us explain the advantages of making one’s own funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Phone for an appointment in our office or in the privacy of your own home, if you prefer.

The result of the apostles’ reasoning was their conviction that Jesus was indeed the King of Israel, even the Shiloh that had been promised them for so many ages. They acknowledged him to be the “son whose name should be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Founder of the Future Age, the Prince of Peace” (Isa. 9:6) “The keys of knowledge, or, the power to reveal the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, were committed to Peter; therefore the new doctrine concerning righteousness, or justification to life, was to be revealed through him.” This is also true; but the “devout Jews” were ignorant of this arrangement; therefore, instead of addressing Peter alone, they inquired of all the apostles, saying, “men and brethren, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37). Mark, reader, though the question was put to all, only one of them, and that one, Peter, replied to the inquiry. He was the spokesman of the twelve, by whose mouth God had chosen that Israel should hear the word of the gospel, and believe; or, as Paul writes, “the gospel of the circumcision was committed to Peter, in whom God wrought effectually for the purpose.”

Hurricane Technologies Residential Support Since August of 2002, Hurricane has been providing computer and technology support to residential and commercial customers. Over the past 10 years, our business has been shifting toward serving mostly commercial customers in the region. The COVID-19 quarantine had forced us to stop serving the needs of our residential customers, and we have made the difficult decision to keep that portion of our business closed indefinitely. We have been proud to support the residents of our community over the years and look forward to a new chapter of focusing on supporting the businesses that serve our residents. Many thanks to our loyal residential customers for the continued support over the years! Tom Vonglis, President Hurricane Technologies, Inc.

Always end the day with a positive thought. no matter how hard things were, tomorrow’s a fresh opportunity to make it better.

WAY TO GO, BUSINESSES! We’re not quite to phase 4, but I wanted to give a shout out to all those businesses that have worked so hard to keep their customer’s safe. Cleaning, disinfecting, and wearing masks is certainly a departure of business as usual. However, for those of us who are now once again, venturing out, it is most appreciated!

LOVE PETS The loss of a beloved pet accidentally killed by a car is beyond heartbreaking. But your pet’s death is not the responsibility of the driver. It’s the responsibility of the person in your household who deliberately or inadvertently let your pet out. Trying to shift blame to the driver is wrong, whether it’s for the death of your pet or for leaving your pet on the side of the road. You don’t know the reason the driver didn’t contact you, so stop assuming they’re a bad person. Can you imagine how heartbroken the GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SORRY! I just wanted to apologize to the person that I cut off at the red light. I should have been paying attention. It was very rude and inconsiderate, and I promise I will try not to do it to another person again. I could tell all the people in the vehicle were angry, and I wish I could have apologized in real life. LOCAL MARKET It’s good to see our local market will open soon. Finally, we will have a place where all our old and new friends can meet, a place where thousands of people can get together from all over the country and just hang out and share a close space. STEALING FLOWERS FROM A GRAVE SITE A couple weeks ago on a nice Saturday morning I took my family to visit my parents’ grave site in Rush, NY. My wife & I visit throughout the year and have taken care of my parent’s plot since my parents passed away around 2000. This year my oldest (17-year-old) daughter & I cleaned up and planted beautiful flowers around my parent’s headstone. It was a touching memorable moment. We visited their plot today just before Memorial Day to see how the flowers were doing and because my father was a veteran officer in the US Navy. We were shocked to discover someone had stolen the flowers we planted. Honestly, who steals $10 worth of flowers from someone’s grave site? It was awkward trying to explain the circumstance to my 3 young children. How incredibly disappointing, upsetting, and repugnant.

a pleasure to go camping this past weekend, to enjoy nature, breathe the fresh air, have campfires, roast marshmallows, make s’mores, and watch the stars. We have been cooped up for quite a while, so this was a welcome change of pace! PAY IT FORWARD Thank you to the person at Dunkin’ Donuts who paid for my coffee. It was a nice treat and I paid it forward!

PLEASE CALM DOWN! I agree with the post about people not respecting the cashiers, etc., who are supplying us with a service we really need. What is it with people? As the Governor put it so concisely weeks ago, “You don’t have the right to infect me or my loved ones.” Get over it already with the masks. You wear seat belts, don’t you? Do you think that isn’t necessary? It is the same with following a simple rule of wearing a mask. How simple can it be? No one is asking you for a kidney. Calm down and smell the flowers! LEARN HOW TO COUGH Cleanliness is the best prevention. I agree with that wholeheartedly. That’s why wearing a mask is so vital. I see people cough, into the open air or into their hands. Yet, we’ve been told time and again that if you cough, do so into your elbow. That is one reason why masks are beneficial!

EXPERT ADVICE FOR COLLEGE-BOUND GRADS “The students who make the most of their college experience aren’t necessarily the smartest ones. It’s often the average kids who know how to utilize the system, connect with the professors, take advantage of extracurricular activities, and manage their time well who reap the rewards,” Tyler says. “Been There, Should’ve Done That” can help students get all they can out of the next four years.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados may help fight depression. Avocados are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which benefit the body in myriad ways. One of those ways is by helping to reduce the symptoms of depression. Polyunsaturated fats such as omega-3 fatty acids are thought to antagonize inflammatory cytokines that can contribute to feelings of depression.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I don’t own a dog, but I have a minor problem with one. My neighbor has a Staffordshire terrier named “Hazel.” Almost every day, Hazel is let out into the neighbor’s backyard, and she quickly escapes by jumping over the short gate at the side of the house. Then she walks into my yard to visit me as I work in the garden. Hazel is very nice, so I don’t feel threatened at all. I’ll give her a few pats and then lead her back over to her house. But I worry about her running around the neighborhood, off-leash and unsupervised. How should I approach my neighbor about her roaming? -- Greg in Albany, New York DEAR GREG: You’re right to be concerned. Hazel could be hit by a car; she could be attacked by another dog; or she could frighten other residents who might injure her. If police or animal control officers see her, she will likely be picked up and taken to the local pound. The next time Hazel comes over to visit, head next door and knock on your neighbor’s door. Talk to them calmly about raising the height of the gate so that she can’t leap over it. You’re a good neighbor to bring Hazel back each time, but ultimately it is the responsibility of her owner to make sure she stays in her yard. Remind your neighbor that having a dog off a leash can result in steep fines from the city or county. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com. Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19 (NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers. They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time. The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent). There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them. These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker. is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice. RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.
