Rockin’ Red Velvet Trifle Makes 8 servings 1 packet hot cocoa mix with 20 to 25 calories 2 tablespoons mini semi-sweet chocolate chips 1⁄2 cup moist-style devil’s food cake mix 1⁄2 cup moist-style yellow cake mix 1⁄4 cup fat-free liquid egg substitute 1⁄2 tablespoon red food coloring Dash of salt 4 ounces fat-free cream cheese 2 tablespoons Jell-O Sugar-Free Fat-Free Vanilla Instant pudding mix 2 tablespoons Splenda No Calorie Sweetener (granulated) 1⁄4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 8-ounce container Cool Whip (thawed) 4 cups chopped strawberries Preheat oven to 350ºF. Spray an 8-inch by 8-inch baking pan with nonstick spray. Place the cocoa mix and 1 tablespoon chocolate chips in a glass. Add 1⁄4 cup very hot water, and stir until mostly dissolved. Add 1⁄3 cup cold water. In a large bowl, combine the cake mixes, egg substitute, food coloring, and salt. Add cocoa mixture, and whisk until smooth. Pour batter into the baking pan, and sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon chocolate chips. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean, 26 to 28 minutes. Let cool completely, about 30 minutes in the pan and 30 minutes out of the pan on a cooling rack. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, stir cream cheese until smooth. In another medium bowl, combine pudding mix with Splenda. Add vanilla extract and 1⁄4 cup cold water, and vigorously stir until mostly smooth and slightly thickened. Add cream cheese and 1 cup Cool Whip, and stir until uniform. Cover and refrigerate. Cut cake into 1-inch cubes. In a large glass bowl or trifle dish, evenly layer half of the cubed cake. Spread all of the pudding mixture over the cake layer. Evenly top with half of the strawberries. Continue layering with remaining cubed cake, Cool Whip and strawberries.

Trevor Coleman as our 2020 Chuck McFadden Student Service Award winner! We had another great turnout of applicants for the $1,000. This award is made possible through the generosity of Avon area businesses. Our thanks to them. Also, the sacrifices that our youth are making on behalf of our

GREAT WEDDING GIFT IDEAS Experience: Many people have embraced gifting an experience instead of an item to their loved ones. Some companies even facilitate such gifts to newlyweds. Websites like Traveler’s Joy allow couples to establish honeymoon registries, building them with activities and experiences they hope to enjoy on their trips. Loved ones can then gift money toward those activities, providing a win-win situation for people who would prefer to gift an experience and ensuring couples’ honeymoons will be that much more memorable.

Congratulations to all graduating Seniors from Avon!

DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS (NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road. 1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents. 2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror.

• I-Car Certified Don’t let insurance companies • Lifetime Warranty steer you toward large corporate • Owners Repair chains. We work with all insurance companies and will Your Vehicle fight for you. Call to ask us why. Personally • Free Estimates • We Use Only OEM Parts • Rust Repair • Fiberglass • Framework • Collision • Paintless Dent Repairs by Appointment • Rental Accomodations • Towing Reimbursements available*

4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags.

“The highest standard in collision repair”

5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. advantages of eating nuts because they are a good fat. I often have wondered if it matters whether the nuts are raw or roasted. Would you please explain the difference and the impact on one’s health? -- D.O. ANSWER: Scientists believe that nuts are healthy for us based on three different types of evidence. One is called “epidemiological”: People who eat nuts live longer and have less heart disease than people who don’t eat nuts. This suggests nuts are good for you, but it’s not definitive. People who eat nuts may do other healthy things, which could be the real reason they live longer (this is called “confounding”). A second line of evidence comes from watching what happens to factors that we believe are related to disease. People who add a reasonable amount of nuts to their diet often have improvements in their cholesterol levels. They also help some people lose a few pounds, possibly because the fat and protein in nuts makes them more filling than the (often processed) starches many people eat. This is also not definitive, because there are treatments that lower cholesterol but don’t make people live longer or improve health. The third is evidence from a large, interventional study on diet. A group of people were randomly assigned to either add more nuts to their diet, or to make no change (or some other change) in their diet. At least one study showed that when people changed their diet to include more nuts and seeds (but also more fruits and vegetables, more healthy oils, like olive oil, and less meat), they had less heart attacks than the group that did not change their diet. This evidence is strong, but it’s not clear whether it’s one change in the diet (just nuts) or all the changes in the diet that are responsible for the observed benefit. In none of these kinds of studies were raw nuts compared against roasted. However, the composition of the fats does not change in nuts and seeds when roasted, and most experts believe it does not make a difference. So, I recommend partaking in nuts however you like them best. Just one serving a day (30 grams or an ounce) makes a difference. They are quite high in calories, so it’s wise not to overdo it. If you don’t like nuts (and obviously for those allergic), not eating them is not a major risk for developing heart disease. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: You have mentioned diseases of the blood marrow before, but what does the bone marrow actually do? -- T.S.B. ANSWER: The main job of the bone marrow is to produce the different blood cells: red blood cells to carry oxygen; white blood cells to fight infection and cancers; and platelets to stop bleeding. Diseases of the bone marrow can cause problems by making something abnormal (such as leukemia cells), but also by failing at its job and not making what it is supposed to. Low red cell counts lead to anemia; low white cell counts increase risk of infection; and low platelet counts contribute to abnormal bleeding. Bone marrow diseases sometimes can be treated directly, but often treatment involves replacing blood products, and possibly using growth factors to make the bone marrow work better. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Items in the freezer are more likely to get freezer burn if there’s water present, so make sure you pat down or otherwise carefully drain meats, fruits and veggies before popping them in the freezer.

HELPING HEROES (NAPSI)—The Department of Defense reports that 1.3 million Americans serve in the military. If you or someone you care about is ever among them and sent overseas, you may be glad to learn about an organization that’s been assisting members of the U.S. armed forces, veterans and their families since the early 1900s: the American Red Cross. It provides emergency communication services, resiliency programs and morale activities.

* “Nothing is more soothing -- and delicious -- than plain yogurt on a sunburn. Slather it on thickly to sunburned skin, wait for about 15 minutes, and rinse off in roomtemperature water. It feels much better afterward, and it gives immediate relief when it goes on cold.” -- C.L. in Texas * Save your tuna cans. You can use them to cook an egg over a campfire, or you can put one under the legs of your camp table and add water. Ants won’t be able to climb up the legs of the table to get to your food. * “If you’ve never used Skin-So-Soft to repel mosquitoes, you should. It does an excellent job at that task and smells so good my whole family uses it. I also use it to wipe down the outside of my door to keep bugs from buzzing all over the entrance.” -- A.A. in Florida * If barbecue is on the menu, try putting out a few small bowls of water with a lemon slice. You can use it to rinse off your fingers as you eat or when you are done eating. It leaves hands with a nice smell, not a sticky smoky mess! * “I love to spice up a simple dip by serving it in a green pepper. I just wash it and cut off the top. Then, I core it and spoon in the dip. The top can be set next to it and filled with extra dip, or just used as a garnish. It’s fun and makes an attractive presentation.” -- J.L. in New Mexico GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

“We are committed to delivering critical services with a caring touch wherever and whenever they’re needed—24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year—for military members and their families at home and around the world,” said Koby Langley, senior vice president for Service to the Armed Forces at the Red Cross. Now, the organization is expanding support for U.S. military personnel in Eastern Europe with a new office in Romania.

GENERAL CONTRACTING

DID YOU KNOW? Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.

HOW TO CLEAN AND PREPARE OUTDOOR FURNITURE FOR THE SEASON Commercial cleansers may be too harsh to use on plastic resin furniture. Before risking discoloration or scratching, try some ingredients that are may be lying around the house. For example, use a wet sponge dipped in baking soda as a mild abrasive to clean resin. Just be sure to thoroughly rinse off the powdery residue afterward. Automatic dishwasher detergent mixed with a gallon of warm water also may do the trick. The detergent contains a mild bleaching agent that will not cause damage like straight bleach.

PITCH IN AND SAVE MONEY Demolition: Demolition involves more than picking up a sledgehammer and swinging away. Some demolition projects are best left to the pros. For example, any projects that involve exposure to hazardous materials are risky and therefore best left to experienced laborers. However, many homeowners are capable of safely and effectively pulling cabinets from walls, removing flooring or knocking down drywall. Homeowners unsure of how to approach demolition tasks can ask their contractors to demonstrate the proper technique so the demolition is done right and on time.

STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Homeowners should not assume they know how to use all of the tools necessary to maintain lush lawns and bountiful gardens. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of manual and motorized equipment by reading the owner’s manual thoroughly, making special note of recommended safety guidelines. Take some time to locate the power buttons and other parts by comparing them to illustrations in the guide. Once you feel comfortable handling the equipment, then you can begin to use it.

BOLD COLORS ADD VITALITY TO HOMES Colors on opposite ends of the color wheel will always complement each other. Green paired with pink (a lighter shade of green’s opposite, red) calls to mind the great outdoors. These hues can add a touch of floral spring sunshine even when that season has long since passed. Opt for a deep green and a carnation pink for maximum impact. And don’t forget a vase full of fresh blooms as the finishing factor.

• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling. • A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past. W ith an emergency kit on hand and the right backup pow er source available, the frustration of w eathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

I’m running out of pots for my herb garden on my for 4-6 plants. Thyme and oregano back deck. Can I combine herbs could share a large pot. like rosemary, basil, and parsley What are the best plants for in the same pot so they can grow, attracting hummingbirds? and I don’t have to buy more pots Hummingbirds are truly one of the to clutter my deck? joys of summer - tiny and feisty and You can grow two herbs with similar beautiful. They like lots of concentrated size and needs in the same pot, but nectar, preferably sucrose. Tubular the pot will need to be twice as big flowers are best since they hold the if you want good growth. Rosemary most nectar. They are attracted to and sage can grow into small shrubs bright colors, with red being their within a season, so each needs its favorite, but also yellow, orange, pink, own pot. Basil is a small plant that and purple. There are many lists needs a lot more water than other you can find online, but at the top of herbs, a separate pot would be best to almost every list is Bee Balm. Others hold 4-6 plants. Parsley is also a small on the lists include Cardinal Flower plant, so one pot would be needed (Lobelia Cardinalis), Columbine,

Daylilies, Salvia (the blue or purple ones), Foxglove, Butterfly Bush, Trumpet Vine, and Bleeding Heart. Also, some easy to grow annuals like Zinnias and Petunias attract them. Although not on any list I saw, at my house I have seen the hummingbirds visit the Guara, Crocosmia Lucifer, and Angelonia. Some trees preferred (according to one online list) are Crabapple, Tulip Tree, Horse Chestnut, Hawthorn, and Eastern Redbud. In my yard, they hang out in the Katsura

Tree and go back and forth from the tree to the feeders and flowers all day long. I recently purchased a flat feeder and have found that the hummers love it as well as the upright feeder. They sit on the flat surface for several minutes at a time with their wings still, enjoying the sugar water. A combination of feeders and flowers can make your yard a favorite spot for these remarkable little creatures.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Local vendors will be familiar with the area and possibly even the location where the wedding will be held. That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with non-local vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have preexisting relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding day operations go smoothly.

by John Thomas The Lord Jesus came to restore to Israel the key of knowledge. The gospel invites men to enter into the kingdom of God. The way of entering is made exceedingly plain in the bible. There is now no hidden mystery concerning it as there was before the sufferings of Christ were manifested. The mystery of the kingdom has been unlocked. The key of knowledge has been given.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Our Routines Are Out of Sync

The new ways we shop for groceries is only the tip of the iceberg this year. Thanks to the coronavirus, there are a number of other things we will likely end up doing in a different way. Many of us have put aside one item on our annual to-do list: filing our taxes. The tax due date was pushed back to July 15, and that date is coming up quickly. If you’ll owe taxes and generally send in a cashier’s check with your return, you’ll need to get that in advance if you don’t want to stand in line in your bank. Many banks are providing services through the drive-up window. Call to ask if you can arrange for a cashier’s check to be waiting for you at the drive-up. Then, to keep from standing in line at the post office to send it certified mail, check with your UPS store. Many of them can do the full array of post office services, and they’re likely to be less busy. Something else to consider: When it’s time to vote this year, consider whether you’d rather vote by absentee ballot than stand in line. Call your town office and find out how early you need to send in your request for a ballot, as well as return the ballot itself. Ask, too, whether you should return your ballot by mail or if it must be hand delivered to election officials. A number of election offices have secured drop boxes (they look like mail boxes) outside the building. Many states also have in-person early voting during a designated pre-election day period. If you typically shop the Amazon Prime Day in July, internet rumors say that it likely won’t take place until August or September. Keep an eye on Amazon for news about this.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT (NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys. COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs. In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage. “A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.” Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis. If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive. Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in. Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19. More poll results The poll also found:

WE ARE OPEN FOR BUSINESS AS USUAL!

• Only 17 percent Americans are aware of acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19; • Only 46 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 will likely increase the number of Americans with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure; • 58 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory failure;

• 54 percent know it can cause pneumonia; • 52 percent of those surveyed know COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome. Learn More: Additional information about COVID-19 and how it affects kidneys can be found at www.kidney.org/coronavirus.

The American Revolution:

Landmarks in the Finger Lakes BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

he Battle at Lexington and Concord, the midnight ride of Paul Revere, Washington crossing the Delaware... these iconic events jump to mind at the mention of the 4th of July and the American Revolutionary War. But did you know that nearly one third of all Revolutionary War battles were fought in New York State? These battles were not just fought in areas like the Hudson, Tioga, and Albany. The Finger Lakes, ever the fertile “bread basket” of New York State, saw its share of action, as well, resulting in these local landmarks. • Newtown Battlefield State Park and Monument - Why: A battle between advancing American troops and countering British troops - When: August 29, 1779 - Where: Newtown in Chemung Valley, near Elmira The Story: After crossing from Pennsylvania into New York, American troops soon met with resistance. British troops established themselves along a ridge to in defense of their stronghold at Newtown. Their intent was to ambush the American troops advancing over the small wooded mountain towards the village. However, Continental troops did not move across the mountain as expected. Aware that their enemy lay atop the mountain ahead, American forces divided their ranks with two brigades circling in a northwesterly direction to surround the mountain while others charged to the top and fired, the rest remaining below with the artillery in an attempt to prevent a retreat. The bold maneuver worked. British lookouts on the ridge were scattered, and the British troops began to retreat. As British troops on the mountain fled to avoid being encircled by American troops, they ran into one of the Colonial brigades. A battle ensued. Chasing the British for over a mile along the mountain as they fought, American troops suffered 11 casualties and gained the victory at the Battle of Newtown. • Groveland Ambuscade Park and Monument - Why: A British ambush of an American scouting party - When: September 13, 1779 - Where: Groveland near Conesus Lake The Story: Following Newtown, American troops and allies moved north then west across the Finger Lakes. British troops and allies were desperate to stop them. Observing the lay of the land and likely travel routes, the British prepared to attack American troops on the wooded hill sloping down to the western shores of Conesus Lake. Neither the American nor the British troops knew exactly where the other was. The Colonials sent a scouting party of 26 men on ahead. Spotting enemy soldiers, the scouts gave chase and were led directly into the British ambush intended for the American troops. On that hill, at what is now Ambuscade Park in Groveland, the westernmost Revolutionary War battle in New York State was fought. The American scouts had pulled the tripwire on the British trap. “A fierce deadly battle ensued inflicting over twice the patriot casualties that had occurred at the better-known battle of Newtown [a Colonial victory],” according to Larry Turner and Bill Koschara with the Town of Groveland. Some of the scouts escaped and reported what they had encountered; the exposed British retreated. Approximately 16 American troops lost their lives in the ambush, but these men may actually have saved many more. Almost 1,000 British soldiers had been lying in wait for approximately 3,000 American soldiers. An ambush and battle between these much larger forces would surely have resulted in more than 16 casualties, particularly for Colonial troops caught by surprise.

The Ambuscade Monument sits atop a hill along a trail just past the pavilion at Groveland Ambuscade Monument and Park.

• Fort Ontario State Park and Fort Ontario - Why: Destroyed by American troops after it was abandoned by the British - When: 1778 - Where: Oswego, east of Sodus Point on the shores of Lake Ontario The Story: Sitting at the mouth of the Oswego River and on the shores of Lake Ontario, this fort was first constructed by the British in 1755 before it was destroyed the following year by French forces. The British rebuilt Fort Ontario, called “The Fort of the Six Nations,” for the first time in 1759 as a larger and more “modern” structure. During the American Revolution, Fort Ontario became strategic for British forces. However, after defeat and a loss of troops and allies, the British abandoned the fort which was destroyed in 1778 by American forces from nearby Fort Stanwix, located in present-day, Rome, New York. However, the fort’s history was far from over. In 1782, the British rebuilt Fort Ontario for the third time and held it despite a 1783 attempt by American forces to retake the fort. In 1796, the British at last turned it over to the United States, only to capture and destroy it about sixteen years later during the War of 1812. The fort remained destroyed for over 25 years. Present day Fort Ontario’s construction began in 1839 and has received upgrades throughout the years. It has served in World Wars I and II for training and hospital purposes as well as operating as the nation’s only emergency refugee shelter during World War II, housing approximately 982 refugees, according to the Fort Ontario Study Act. The fort is now on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2020, we battle COVID-19 on American soil. Many of us cannot gather, have firework displays and celebrate our Independence Day as we usually would. Nevertheless, we can still appreciate our region’s role in forming this great nation as evidenced all around us.

Her Cat Eats Fast and Then Vomits

DEAR CHERYL: Regurgitation is soooo not fun! I’m sure Robbie doesn’t like it, and you don’t like having to clean up. Because Robbie was a shelter cat, he may have been in a situation in the past where he had to compete for food with other cats -- not in the shelter, but perhaps in a bad home environment. So now he eats fast, so the food doesn’t disappear on him, and he probably eats all of it right away. His overfull stomach is triggered to regurgitate some of that food. First, make sure that no underlying health conditions are contributing to Robbie’s food gulping and regurgitation. Have the veterinarian examine him and discuss the behavior, as you will get some great, targeted advice about ways to reduce the problem. Once that’s done, implement some new suppertime habits to slow down Robbie’s pace: -- Try a slow feeder bowl, which uses a maze or puzzle to force a cat to work for each morsel of dry food. -- Space out feedings through the day if possible, splitting Robbie’s total daily intake up into several smaller amounts. -- Try a different type of cat food, or a different way of feeding, such as mixing dry and wet foods together. -- Switch in some fresh foods like steamed chicken and rice (unseasoned). Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

POINTERS ON MOVING TO A NEW HOME BY RENTAL TRUCK

(NAPSI)—Moving yourself to a new home by renting a truck can be easier than you may realize, if you heed these five facts and tips.

HOME SWEET HOME Let me make that wish come true

• Know when to go. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. • Be up on your truck. Make sure you can find and understand all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, so you have to be extra vigilant. • Understand the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. • Know the “No-Zone.” Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. • Look into insurance. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: You can find further moving facts and tips at www.PenskeTruckRental.com and (800) GO-PENSKE.

WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees. Hurricane Technologies Residential Support Since August of 2002, Hurricane has been providing computer and technology support to residential and commercial customers. Over the past 10 years, our business has been shifting toward serving mostly commercial customers in the region. The COVID-19 quarantine had forced us to stop serving the needs of our residential customers, and we have made the difficult decision to keep that portion of our business closed indefinitely. We have been proud to support the residents of our community over the years and look forward to a new chapter of focusing on supporting the businesses that serve our residents. Many thanks to our loyal residential customers for the continued support over the years! Tom Vonglis, President Hurricane Technologies, Inc.

Wild spaces and lawns The person was not talking about trails and “wild spaces,”, as you put it, being mowed: There is a difference in maintaining one’s property and yard. I, for one, do indeed enjoy wild life and the birds, squirrels, chipmunks, etc. I also enjoy looking at not only my beautiful lawn and garden that is taken care of but those of others in the community. It speaks volumes about the people who live in the home, if when you go by their house you see an unkept lawn. You seem to have missed the point of the previous comments about lawns. A Big Thank You! The Cal-Mum Council of Churches would like to give a big shout out and thank you to all the wonderful people who pulled together during the quarantine of Covid by donating food, diapers, toilet paper, and gift cards to our emergency food pantry. Your response was overwhelming. We couldn’t have helped those in need in our great community without all of you generous people and organizations. Also a huge thank you to the many people who immediately reached out us to donate their time by delivering food. We had so many volunteers that we didn’t get to everyone, but we want you to know we will keep you on our list for anything upcoming that we will need volunteers for. Thanks again! Please stay safe and healthy, and God Bless all of you.

Special thanks! What a wonderful business gesture Jeff from Twisters Ice Cream of Livonia gave us for The 12th Annual Livingston County Baseball/Softball Camp. Despite these tough economic times for small business owners, Twisters of Livonia continues to support local camps. Twisters donated over 100 ice cream tokens for all the participants in the 2020 Livingston County Baseball/Softball Camp. Thanks Jeff at Twisters!

Baseball/Softball Camp The 2020 Livingston County Baseball/Softball Camp would like to sincerely thank all our 2020 sponsors for your generosity to the youth of Livingston County. Special thanks to Livingston County Eye Care, Wegmans of Geneseo, McDonalds of Lakeville, Finger Lakes Tees, Minnehans Go Karts, Dougherty Funeral Homes, Twisters of Livonia, and Community Bank!

Death of your cat My heart goes out to the person whose cat was run over. The comment made by someone who more or less said it was your fault was so horrible. As an animal lover and previous cat owner, I feel terrible about your loss. If I may, I do agree that when cats are out of the house, it is increasing the possibility that something terrible will happen to them. I have experienced that for myself. However, this does not mean that as drivers we should not be careful especially if we should see an animal on or near the road. I have been driving for more years than I care to admit, and except for one turtle, I have not killed any animals while I was driving. I have heard people brag about killing a dog on purpose, and it was sickening. Sorry for your loss.

Thoughtless Litterbug Drivers During Earth Week my family and I picked up five bags of garbage, litter, cans and bottles along our rural road and a nearby seasonal dirt road in the neighborhood. Today, I walked my dog down this wooded, seasonal road and found several more fresh, scattered and randomly tossed-out beer bottles and cans. This road is not a main thoroughfare, yet the few people who use this dirt road to apparently party or drink and drive, carelessly continue to toss their garbage and used cans and bottles along it. I’m disgusted!

Hear the life! Mowing seems overrated, or at least, overdone. It’s a sensible practice to do around structures and driveways, and it’s nice to have pathways. Otherwise, we really enjoy seeing the succession of wildflowers and grasses that spontaneously blossom and mature over the course of the growing season. Forget about buttercups. We have dandelions, trefoils, plantains, knapweeds, clovers, goldenrods, asters and more in our “wild spaces.” Truly, we have more birds with their singing, more bees with their industrious humming, more experienced vibrancy of life, because we leave areas un-mowed. All this we enjoy as we stroll daily on our walking paths. Everyday brings something new to see. If the property value is decreased because we don’t drive around the lawn in circles twice a week, it’s news to us.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.

Anne’s family would like to offer a special thanks to all of the caregivers at Glenmere Assisted Living, the UR Medicine Hospice Care, along with the staff at Highland Geriatrics.

Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

WHAT IS A TRUST? A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust. There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them. THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.
