HOW TO COMBAT FOUR PET PEEVES AROUND THE HOUSE

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

1. Never Enough Outlets: The average family charges up to 12 devices a day. With connectivity more prevalent than ever, the demand for convenient charging options is at an all-time high. The adorne Pop-Out Outlet from Legrand features three standard receptacles for added power and can disappear into the wall when not in use. Plus, its tamper-resistant plugs will keep children safe. Now you can simultaneously charge phones, tablets and laptops with an outlet made to maximize charging needs. 2. Lights Carelessly Being Left On: Constantly reminding people to turn off the bedroom lights? You can install motion sensors that automatically turn lights on when someone enters the room and shut lights off when the room is no longer occupied. 3. Phone Charger Mysteriously Disappearing: Scouring your home for a phone charger can be a thing of the past when you replace standard outlets with an instant, cord- and clutter-free way to charge phones, such as the new-to-market Wireless Charger from the radiant Collection. 4. Lack of Light at Night: Make the walk to the bathroom or the nursery at night a little brighter by installing night lights in hallways, kitchens and children’s rooms. Some night lights even offer adjustable light levels or can convert to flashlights. Two attractive solutions can be found in the radiant and adorne Collections by Legrand. For a home with more traditional aesthetics, the radiant Collection offers a Night Light with Two Tamper-Resistant Outlets. It features five adjustable light levels and an optional louver for additional light-level control. For a more modern and design-savvy look, there’s the one from the adorne Collection. It provides a soft glow and with ambient light level sensors, so it’s visible only in dark spaces. A few simple switches around the house can help you have more control over your home’s lights and electronics. While you’re improving your place, you may care to consider adorne appbased lighting control options, designed to provide solutions that offer whole-house control with the touch of a button. Homeowners who have both Legrand smart lighting systems and Voice Control−enabled devices from Google or Amazon can now power and dim lights simply by saying phrases like “OK, Google, turn on the porch lights” and “Alexa, dim the living room to 50 percent” without needing to reach for a phone, tablet, or light switch. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The maddening but addictive Rubik’s Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.

It was an honor to be named the

2020 FARM OF THE YEAR!

Peter, then had to be prepared for the work. The narrative of his preparation is contained in the tenth chapter of Acts. A direct attack was made upon his prejudices. He became very hungry about 12 o’clock in the day. While waiting for something to eat on the housetop, an amazement came over him. In this state, he saw a great sheet full of all sorts of unclean creatures, fit and appropriate emblems of the moral condition of the Gentiles. At this crisis, the Spirit said, “Rise, Peter, kill and eat!” But Peter preferred hunger to defilement; and would not consent, until it was repeated for the third time, that the legal distinction between clean and unclean was done away: “what God hath cleansed call not thou it common,” or unclean.

GARDENING IN AUTUMN Autumn is gardening season. That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully. A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.

MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER Maintaining the proper chemical balance of pool water will help keep it clean and protect system components from damage. The pH level of pool water measures its acidity or alkalinity. The pH level should be between 7.4 and 7.6 for best results. Latham Pool Products says water that is too acidic can cause eye and skin irritation and damage liners or equipment with corrosion. High pH may cause cloudy water and make chlorine less active. Again, frequent testing helps pool owners understand their water chemistry better and make adjustments. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

COVID Plays Havoc With Puppy's Vaccines --DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My Labrador puppy, "Charlie," is six months old. He received his first and second round of vaccines, but then our state went into lockdown. Can I hold off on getting the rest of his shots for now, until restrictions ease? -- Blake F., Sacramento DEAR BLAKE: Contact Charlie's veterinarian first to find out if they are allowing non-urgent visits. The first year of vaccinations is extremely important for your dog's development and long-term health. Lockdown mandates are making it difficult for everyone to figure out if and when they should visit the vet for their pet's checkups. But veterinarians know how important it is to keep to the vaccine schedule (to learn more, go to akc.org and search for "puppy shots schedule"). By this point they should have some guidelines and a plan for scheduling routine appointments. That also goes for maintaining adult pets' vaccinations and keeping their licenses current. Contact the veterinarian to find out if they're booking routine appointments. What if you aren't able to get an appointment to get Charlie's third round of shots? For now, limit his exposure to other dogs, as he still has some risk of contracting serious illnesses like parvovirus. That means no dog park visits or play dates (unless you know the other dog's vaccine status). Let him run in the backyard or go to a state park or other large outdoor area that allows pets and doesn't have many people or animals around. Spend more time training him on basic obedience commands -- if you're both stuck at home, now is the perfect time. As soon as a vet appointment opens up, take Charlie in and get him up to date on his shots. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

Make the most of mulching Lawns and gardens can often benefit from the laying of mulch. Mulch serves various purposes in lawns and gardens, and many experienced lawn and garden enthusiasts lay mulch to ensure their properties make it through spring, summer and fall unscathed. First-time homeowners with little or no landscaping experience may not understand the benefits of mulch, which can be used to strengthen soil and protect properties from the elements.

callancontracting.com REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE (NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions.

$18 per yard Picked Up

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications. “AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Topsoil Locations: Victor - Avon Visit our website for details.

Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack. “If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Hand tools and gardening tools usually can be cleaned with rags. If these tools are especially dirty, give them a wash with soap and water. Just be sure to dry the tools thoroughly after washing them. LifeHacker advises wiping down wooden handles on tools with linseed oil to keep them in good repair. Power tools may benefit from compressed air being blown into smaller crevices to dislodge sawdust and other debris. Lubricate any moving parts with a product recommended by the manufacturer. Keeping tools clean and in good repair goes a long way toward safer, more efficient home improvement projects.

REPLACE ENERGY-HUNGRY APPLIANCES The United States Department of Energy says the average American family spends about $2,200 each year for energy costs, and large, inefficient appliances no doubt contribute heavily to those expenditures. Appliances that are several years old, including refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, and even ovens, may no longer meet the stringent energy-saving specifications required of new items. That means such appliances are negatively affecting the environment and their owners’ bottom lines.

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

MILLWORK CAN ADD APPEAL & A CLASSIC FEEL Between the 15th and 18th centuries, ornate millwork was largely reserved for royalty or the very wealthy. Skilled carpenters would hand carve each piece, taking weeks to finish most projects. Eventually, millwork became more commonplace. Distinguishing one property from another today could mean turning back to the more distinctive designs of the past.

Rake leaves as they start to fall more heavily. Once leaves begin to fall more heavily, rake them up and add them to compost piles. The resource GardeningKnowHow.com notes composting leaves creates a dark, rich and organic matter that can add nutrients to garden soil and loosen compacted earth. Leaving leaves on the lawn once they start to fall in great numbers makes it hard for grass blades to breathe, and the leaves can block moisture from reaching the soil, which needs water to maintain strong roots. In addition, potentially harmful pathogens can breed on damp leaves left on a lawn, and such bacteria can cause significant damage to the turf over time.

REDUCE YOUR ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT

surrounding ecosystem. As such, they deserve our careful consideration when making landscaping choices. Patty Love, Founder and Program Director of the Rochester Permaculture Center, believes our choices must go beyond the “how many and where” approach to restore— and even improve—our slice of nature.

“People typically choose plants based on creating an attractive display,” explained Love, a consultant and researcher, and Certified permaculture designer and teacher based in the Genesee River Valley. “A Permaculture design approach brings in plants which fill those same functions of beauty but also feed wildlife, pollinators, people, or all three.” Permaculture is a design system that harmoniously integrates people and landscape to meet the human needs while cultivating natural ecosystems which are diverse, stable, resilient, and regenerative. Put simply, it can be applied to landscaping to create beauty while living in beneficial harmony with the animals and natural environments around us. First, we must identify our natural environment. “We live in a humid temperate forest biome,” said Love. “That is the 4th most productive environment in the world in terms of converting sunlight into biomass. Since our own native climate is already so productive, why not recreate it as we landscape to take advantage of that potential? You can create your ideal look with edible plants which create a safer environment for your children while teaching them about nutrition, food origins and positive relationships between plants, animals, beneficial insects and other wildlife.”

Make your yard an environmentally friendly oasis.

TRY SOME OF PATTY LOVE’S TOP 10 TIPS Find natural alternatives to pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Our properties and waterways are all connected. What we put on our lawns typically finds its way into Lake Ontario, where nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers contributes to algal bloom. Other lawn chemicals can damage the water quality and disrupt food chains.

Think in layers. Natural environments consist of 8 layers: overstory (or canopy), understory, shrub, herbaceous, ground covers, roots, vines, and fungi. Select plants from more than one layer when planning an area. Using this pattern from nature allows for a tremendous amount of diversity while creating successful ecosystems for plants and animals.

Set the goals for your natural space; then select a design that works. If one of your goals is added privacy, for example, choose shrubs or trees that provide that. The Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District offers many affordable varieties at its annual plant sale.

Build better lawns. Get the look of a short, green lawn beyond the monocrop that is grass. Dutch White Clover, thyme and chamomile are all low growing green plants that will fill out your lawn, add edible elements, and reduce the need for mowing.

Swap out favorite colorful landscaping plants, like the “burning bush” shrub, with beneficial native plants such as the blueberry bush. Its leaves also turn bright red in the fall, and meanwhile, it provides flowers for pollinators and berries for humans and animals. Plant it with beautiful nodding wild onions whose scent can deter deer and larval pests of blueberry plants. Keep author Dave Jacke’s 7 F’s in mind: Plants should provide at least some of these benefits: Food, Fiber, Fun, “Farmaceuticals” (plants with medicinal properties), Fuel, Fertilizer, and Fodder. Make sure the plants you choose are filling at least three of these functions!

“An environmentally responsible landscape is a way we can give back to nature while lowering the environmental impact of development,” Love encouraged. “It can improve our quality of life and restore our environment.”

Let the dandelions grow. Dandelions are one of the earliest and most important food sources for pollinators, and every part of the dandelion is edible. They are even medicinal! Choose a fruitful hedge. Rather than using an invasive shrub like Japanese barberry to create a hedge, go with a bountiful fruit producer like currant bushes. Raspberry and blackberry bushes also create a bramble border while producing many delicious berries. Aronia, a flowering shrub, are very easy to care for and produce a beautiful, edible black fruit which is high in antioxidants. Elderberries are also phenomenal because they are so versatile, growing nearly anywhere. Think of the bees! Bee Balm is an excellent option as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial pollinators are very attracted to it, and you can eat the petals and leaves! For vegetables, consider perennial Sea Kale or Turkish rocket, a perennial broccoli-like plant. Start small. Outline a designated space, even a square yard, and select a small community of plants for that environment. Let it be natural and see what happens!

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars.

“The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.

KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

Vitamin D Deficit After Gastric Bypass --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 72-year-old woman in fair health. I had strong bones until I had gastric bypass surgery. Within two years, I developed osteoporosis. In 2016 my parathyroid hormone level was found to be elevated. However, it has come down over the past year or two from 97.76 to 68.95 pg/mL. The endocrinologist now has me on 8,000 IU of vitamin D-3 per day. My calcium was 9.3 and ionized calcium was 5.0. Meanwhile, the rheumatologist treating my osteoporosis has prescribed Reclast infusions once per year. I just received my second one this month. This summer I broke a toe on my right foot with no known trauma. In October I sustained a stress fracture of my left heel bone, again without any known trauma. I am very worried about what all this means to my future bone health. -- L.M.J. ANSWER: I suspect you had vitamin D deficiency due to the gastric bypass surgery, which prevents your body from absorbing it efficiently. Without vitamin D, your bones cannot take up calcium as effectively. The parathyroid hormone often will increase in this situation, and this is called “secondary hyperparathyroidism.” It’s important to note that both your total and ionized calcium levels are normal. Ionized calcium is the active form -- some calcium binds to albumin, a major protein in blood. In secondary hyperparathyroidism, the calcium is never high. A high calcium and high parathyroid level always means primary hyperparathyroidism, which almost always comes from a tumor of the parathyroid gland. Unfortunately, I have seen people whose doctors have confused this point and missed the diagnosis. With replacement of your vitamin D (at a high-enough dose, you can absorb enough), the PTH level is settling back down to normal, and it would be expected that your bone strength would start going up as well. I would expect your endocrinologist or rheumatologist to follow your bone density through a DEXA scan. The Reclast (zoledronic acid) is an intravenous bisphosphonate, and it slows down reabsorption of your bone. Between the higher vitamin D and the Reclast, your bones should get better and your risk of fracture will decrease, but it will take time. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you discussed the effect of ibuprofen on men with an enlarged prostate. I am a 78-year-old who runs 15-20 miles per week, with benign prostatic hyperplasia and who also has reduced urinary frequency with occasional use of Advil. As a runner, I have been reluctant to make it a daily regimen because I have read that inflammation is part of the body’s response to tissue damage, which is crucial to the healing process and is important for muscle growth. When ibuprofen’s anti-inflammatory effect reduces symptoms, does it affect the healing process also? Can you comment on the pros and cons for runners? -- B.M. ANSWER: High-dose ibuprofen was shown to inhibit muscle protein synthesis following weightlifting exercise. This led to a suspicion that it might impair the gains in muscle strength that are made with exercise. However, a Canadian study showed that moderate doses of ibuprofen (400 mg after exercise) did not impair muscle growth or gains in strength. Using ibuprofen for occasional muscle soreness or for the purpose of reducing prostate inflammation should not adversely affect your performance in running. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Here’s a budget stretcher: “Credit goes to my friend for this great butter extender. Whip 1 pound of softened butter and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Slowly add 1 cup of olive oil. Beat up to 5 minutes to add air and increase volume. Pour into two 1-pint containers and refrigerate. Economical, spreads like soft margarine, tastes great and you get the benefits of olive oil in a natural product.” -- S.B., British Colombia, Canada * Mix a quarter cup of salt in with two tablespoons of bath wash for a sudsy, refreshing, skin-soothing salt scrub. * “Before I go to the beach, I freeze an ice-cube tray full of lemonade. Then, we use the cubes in our travel cups. It keeps the lemonade cool, and as it melts (which tends to be quickly), it doesn’t water down the drink.” -- K.H. in Myrtle Beach, S.C. * Some tips for middle or high-school kids going back to school virtually: Have a designated workspace. This can be as simple as a large tray turned upside down and placed on the end of the bed with a storage ottoman to sit on. It will be better than trying to lay in bed and work. * Mold on baked goods goes beyond what you can see. The mold puts out “feelers” that are invisible to the naked eye, so if you see mold on your muffin or bread, don’t think that you can cut that part off and be done with it. To be safe, throw the whole thing away. * “I needed an outlet on my porch, so I ran a long extension cord along the edge of the patio and fed it up into a piece of PVC pipe that was left over from a plumbing job. It holds the end of the cord at about outlet height. Whatever works!” -- V.L. in Arizona GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Hurricane Technologies Residential Support Since August of 2002, Hurricane has been providing computer and technology support to residential and commercial customers. Over the past 10 years, our business has been shifting toward serving mostly commercial customers in the region. The COVID-19 quarantine had forced us to stop serving the needs of our residential customers, and we have made the difficult decision to keep that portion of our business closed indefinitely. We have been proud to support the residents of our community over the years and look forward to a new chapter of focusing on supporting the businesses that serve our residents. Many thanks to our loyal residential customers for the continued support over the years! Tom Vonglis, President Hurricane Technologies, Inc.

GRASS ISSUE I agree with not mowing grass into the road. Near our hamlet, on the next road over, there was a long stretch-and I mean a long stretchof grass over one half of the road last week. It was not some little patch. Next time, I will take a picture. It is not compliable with NYS law. It was cleaned up, but the point is you can’t be putting tons of grass in the road. NO GRIPE WITH PAINTED ROCKS! If somebody is posting a positivity, I do not think that is trash or anything to gripe about. Smile and move on. PROPERTY AND PRIVACY My wife and I settled down in (local town), desiring a quiet and private setting. For some reason, one of the neighbors decided it’s okay to walk through our property with GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

their two dogs. We are animal lovers and not concerned about the dogs or their poop. What is problematic is we no longer have our privacy - we actually feel like moving. We don’t want to upset our neighbor, as they may take it personally. I just can’t understand why someone would do this. They have a large piece of property, as well, and a quiet road to walk down. It’s startling sometimes since it’s so private and quiet where we are. It took all our life savings to purchase our home, and it doesn’t even feel like “ours,” Please everyone, respect property lines and move if you need more room to walk. LOUD MUSIC My neighbor plays loud music outside for up to eight hours a day. If indeed you need help coping with these stressful times, see a therapist. If you have

A FIELD OF SUNSHINE To all the farmers who plant fields of sunflowers, thank you! It brings happiness to so many who pass by, stop for a quick photo or purchase a few stems. May we all take advice from a sunflower: Be bright, sunny and positive. Spread seeds of happiness. Rise, shine and hold your head high.

id. trouble hearing, get a hearing aid. s. The loud music is simply ridiculous. If you want to play it, fine, but the ot entire neighborhood should not have to listen to it. A good rule of o thumb is to follow social cues. If no c, one else in the area is blaring music, you shouldn’t do it either. KEEP CATS INDOORS I’m unpleasantly surprised to see so many outdoor cats in my neighborhood. In addition to being less safe when left to roam outside, outdoor cats also cause problems for humans and other animal species. Outdoor cats are vulnerable to attacks by wild animals like foxes. Cruel humans can harm them, kill them, or steal them to sell to laboratories. Outdoor cats can be hit by cars. It’s dangerous for them to be out in extreme weather conditions, both hot and cold. Cats are an invasive species due to human carelessness, and outdoor cats wreak havoc on

wildlife and the ecosystem. Not all neighbors like your cat on their property, using their flower beds as litter boxes, for example. Be a responsible cat owner and keep your feline friends in the safety of your home. A LOT OF NERVE Neighbor, who do you think you are, offering my property to your friends? What I do or don’t do with my possessions is my business, not yours. My property does not belong to you, and it is not a toy chest for your prying eyes. Stay off my land, and if you see something you want, buy your own!

‘BREATHE EASIER’ HEALTHCARE DONATION PROGRAM (NAPSI)—Healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic are in desperate need of creative solutions to the lack of personal protective gear and supplies that help block harmful airborne pathogens. But civic-minded companies can help.

Livingston County Office for the Aging

Provides funds to assist the home-delivered meals program and legal services aid for the elderly who choose to remain living independently in their homes. The Livingston County Office for the Aging offers programs and services to individuals ages 60 and over.

For example, NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker, an electrostatic topical nasal gel that prevents airborne particles from entering the nose, created the “Breathe Easier Healthcare Workers Donation Program.” The firm offers free nasal gel to any healthcare professional who’d like to try it. Requests can be sent via www.NasalGuard.com. “NasalGuard is drug-free and safe for children, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, and those concerned about potential drug interactions with other medications,” says Kanika Wahi, a biomedical engineer and co-inventor of the micriofiltration technology. “As people take protective measures to help themselves during this time, NasalGuard is another tool in their arsenal of prevention. We at NasalGuard are proud to support the frontline healthcare workers as well as anyone else in need of preventative products.” The company has long believed in giving back and has donated thousands of units of NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker nationally and internationally through a number of well-known charitable organizations.

Fig and Walnut Fruit Cake

Looking for a Customized Workout in a Safe Environment?

Makes 12 servings 1 1 3⁄4 1⁄2 1⁄2 1 3 1 1⁄2 1⁄4

Vegetable oil spray lb. walnut halves & pieces lb. dried figs, stems removed, quartered cup all-purpose flour teaspoon baking powder teaspoon fine sea salt cup sugar large eggs, lightly beaten teaspoon vanilla extract cup diced candied orange peel cup walnut brandy

10 sessions | 4 weeks | $12/session

Preheat the oven to 225 F. Coat the inside of a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with the vegetable oil spray; set aside. Toss the walnuts and figs in a large mixing bowl; set aside. Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a medium bowl. Toss 3 tablespoons of the dry ingredients with the nuts and fruit to coat. Adds the eggs and vanilla to the remaining dry ingredients and mix with a wooden spoon to form a smooth batter. Mix in the candied orange peel. Scrape into the nuts and fruit and toss with a rubber spatula until everything is evenly coated. Scrape the batter-coated nuts and fruit into the prepared pan, wet your hands with cold water, and pack the nuts and fruit firmly into the pan. Set in the oven and bake for 8 hours, until the top is golden brown and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. (An instantread thermometer inserted in the center of the cake should register 215 to 225 F.) Remove the pan from the oven and spoon the brandy over the top. Cool on a rack for 30 minutes. Run a knife around the edge to loosen, invert onto a rack, remove the pan, turn right-side up, and cool to room temperature. Variation: You can “bake” this in a slow cooker; you will need a 11⁄2-quarter soufflé dish and a 6-quart or larger slow cooker. Once the batter is in the soufflé dish, put it in the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Social Media Holds Hidden Dangers Even before the lockdowns brought on by the coronavirus, too many seniors felt isolated. Now it's even worse for many of us with the lack of face-to-face interactions ... and we've turned to social media for connections to others. There, on Facebook and Twitter, in chat rooms and email lists, we've found friends to talk to and pass the hours of this lockdown. We feel happy to have these people at the other end of the keyboard. It's good for us. Or maybe not. The big problem with social media is that we really don't know who is on the other end. The new friend who seems so interested in us might actually be a scammer, just waiting for the right moment to spring the trap and ask for money. How can you refuse, you'll wonder, if someone you've come to know so well asks for help? Or maybe we've shared too much information, such as our location or our real name. Or how about the new friend who sends funny cartoons, one of which might contain a virus that leaves our computer open to hackers? Add in an election year, and it's all too easy to talk online with people who supposedly share our views. Quite commonly they ask for money or contact info. Some things to think about: If you really want to connect with others on social media, create a fake name for it. Learn how to block people and don't add just anybody to your network or list. Don't give out your real name or location, no matter how friendly other people seem. Focus on an area of social media with a narrow, safe focus such as pets, cooking or gardening. Better yet, call up a few people you already know and ask if they'd like to meet for online games, such as chess, or just chatting. They might feel just as isolated as you do and welcome your overture.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Consider design Design your résumé so it will look good whether it’s viewed on a screen or a mobile phone or printed on paper. Classic serif style fonts can make a résumé seem dated, so select modern fonts that are crisp. The idea is for the résumé to look balanced and clear, without being overdone with modifications, like italics and bold lettering. However, a spot of color could provide much-needed attention.

AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS

Assess your budget carefully. You naturally will have to make concessions that impact finances, particularly as it pertains to spending. Cut back on non-necessities like dining out, gym memberships, streaming subscriptions, and other luxuries. Avoid adding other new debt.

Contact your credit card company. Many companies have programs designed to help customers facing financial hardships. Reach out promptly to let them know you may be anticipating missed payments. It is better if you initiate contact rather than going into default. The same tactic can be used for mortgage or rent payments.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Meditate. When stressed out, men and women should not discount the potential benefits of meditation. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University examined more than 19,000 meditation studies, ultimately concluding that mindful meditation can ease stresses like anxiety, depression and pain. The APA notes that such meditation has been found to reap immediate benefits, potentially helping people who can find time to meditate during the day to prevent their stress from accumulating throughout a hectic workday.
