MAKE FALL CLEAN-UP ECO-FRIENDLY Rake leaves sensibly Power blowers and mulchers make fast work of leaves, but at the expense of the environment. Gas-powered devices discharge fuel exhaust into the air, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, reap the benefits of peace and quiet as well as exercise from manual raking. While raking, do not feel the need to remove every leaf. A certain amount of organic matter can be beneficial to the soil and even insulate the lawn somewhat. A leftover leaf here or there also may provide protection for insects and small animals. For example, many native bees spend the winter in tunnels in the ground, cracks in mortar, holes in dead wood, or within hollow stems, and they need lawn and garden litter to survive.
LAWN & LANDSCAPING
FALL IS FOR PLANTING A lot of people ask why fall is for planting. Fall has distinct planting benefits. Autumn’s cooler air temperatures are easier on both plants and gardeners. The soil is still warm, allowing roots to grow until the ground freezes. Fall has more good days for planting than spring does, when rain and other unpredictable weather can make working the soil impossible. Furthermore, our nurseries that we select our quality perennial, annual, ornamental, and tree products from would rather sell their remaining product than store their stock over winter. With that in mind, our nurseries that we work with pass along a discount on their stock to us, and we like to pass that along to our exsiting and new customers. With that being said, don’t hesitate. Call our office today or e-mail us at the link below to start rejuvinating and/or building a new landscape with some beautiful spectacular plantings to your home or business!
Now Offering 15% OFF All landscape plantings, mulch, and topsoil for jobs booked in the month of September.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing.

* On Sept. 21, 1780, during the American Revolution, American Gen. Benedict Arnold meets with British Major John Andre to discuss handing over West Point to the British, in return for money and a position in the British army. The plot was foiled and Arnold became synonymous with the word “traitor.”

SAFELY REMOVING FALLEN LEAVES Use a secure ladder. When removing leaves from gutters, be sure the ladder is sturdy and secure. Consider having a friend serve as a spotter, holding on to the ladder to offer greater security. Do not overextend to stretch for leaves.

I do this when I am transporting dip to a potluck. Vegetable oil has no flavor, really, and it’s just enough to let the lid come off without taking the top layer with it.” -- J.A. in Florida GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An offer to help with a stalled project should reassure you that you have a workable plan in spite of the problems in getting it up and running. The week’s end brings more positive news. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A past problem about a workplace situation re-emerges early in the week. Talking things out helps ease tensions by midweek, but some hurt feelings could linger a few more days. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Optimistic aspects dominate your efforts. However, expect to confront some criticism, some of which might be valid, so keep an open mind. But overall, it’s your views that will count. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Social interaction with new people, especially on the job, could be a bit strained in the early part of the week. But the awkwardness passes as you get to know each other better. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Expect news about a follow-up to a workplace change that could make a difference in your career path. Meanwhile, new friends widen the circle for all you Social Lions who love to party. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Enjoy your well-earned plaudits for a job well done. But be aware that some people might not share your colleagues’ admiration, and you might have to work harder to win them over. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good week to recheck your probably already overlong “to do” list and decide what to keep and what to discard. Lose the clutter and focus your energy on what’s really important. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to take a new perspective on what you’ve been offered. Expanding your view could help to uncover any plusses or minuses that weren’t apparent at first. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Applying the usual methods to this week’s unique challenges might not work too well. Instead, use your creativity to find a way to resolve any impasse that develops. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) So what if fate throws some obstacles in your path this week? Just keep in mind that the sure-footed and resolute Goat can get past any barrier by focusing on the goals up ahead. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This week calls for better communication with people in both your private life and the workplace. Start by asking questions, and then pay close attention to the answers. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Potentially beneficial workplace changes could be closer than you realize. Make sure you know what’s going on so that you’re not left high and dry when the good things happen. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re not timid about pushing to have your aims realized once you’ve set your mind to accomplishing your goals. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

MEMORIAL CELEBRATIONS Just as destination weddings and gender reveal parties have changed the way people are choosing to celebrate marriage and birth, the rituals surrounding death are also changing. Particularly in cases where cremation is chosen over body burial, memorial services (where the body is not present) are increasingly replacing funerals (where the body is present). These celebratory events tend to be more life-centered than mournful, and often revolve around the deceased’s personality and interests. It seems people are finding it more important than ever to plan a funeral or memorial ceremony that is most appropriate to the deceased’s and well-wishers’ desires. The final ritual surrounding one’s demise should be as unique and personal as the person it honors. A funeral can and should be as unique as the life that is being celebrated. We want to help you make the arrangements that you want. Personalizing a funeral or memorial service can be very therapeutic--it gives you and your family something to concentrate on as you relive memories. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME accommodates all families. It is a commitment to our ethics, our morals, our standards, and to our community that has helped our funeral home become the pillar for so many families during the most difficult of times. To learn about our funeral services, please call (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “I believe there are two sides to the phenomenon known as death, this side where we live, and the other side where we shall continue to live. Eternity does not start with death. We are in eternity now.” Norman Vincent Peale

“The truly great person is the one who makes every person feel great…” ~ G.K. Chesterton Chesterton has given us the key to success and popularity. It is so simple…perhaps too simple…yet few people ever apply it to daily situations. Every human wants recognition. Even criminals may be motivated by a desire to be noted, we are told. We all want to be recognized and respected. So, we tend to try to impress others by telling what we have done, what we think. Obviously, we could make others feel great by taking a sincere interest in what THEY say, in what THEY think. In that way, we achieve a measure of greatness for ourselves. We provide an essential service to the families of this community, and we are proud of our find reputation among those we have served.

Pick your destination Anywhere with deciduous trees provides the opportunity to witness blazing autumn color. During leaf-peeping season, travelers can go coast to coast and see awesome vistas. Some regions are particularly known for their leaf displays. New York’s Catskill and Adirondack regions are prime spots for visitors in the autumn. Those who live further north will find that leaves in Vermont are such an attraction that routes are published indicating where to enjoy the best views. Further south, Central and Eastern Virginia peak in late October. And don’t forget the shores of the Great Lakes, which are awash in reds, oranges and yellows by mid-September. The travel resource Frommer’s offers more leaf-peeping locales to visit. ●

Leaves cascading dow n from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. How ever, colorful and aw e-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from grow ing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But w et leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the law n through the w inter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons w hy so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Around and around the house the leaves fall thick—but never fast, for they come circling down with a dead lightness that is sombre and slow. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Sept. 25, 1970, ABC premieres “The Partridge Family,” which would become a smash hit. The group’s songs were not actually recorded by the five siblings and their mom in a garage, but were mostly the work professional musicians in Los Angeles. * On Sept. 26, 1957, “West Side Story,” composed by Leonard Bernstein, opens on Broadway. The show went on to an impressive maiden run of 732 performances. In 1961, a film version was an enormous hit and took home 10 Academy Awards. * On Sept. 28, 1066, claiming his right to the English throne, William, duke of Normandy, invades England. On Christmas Day, William the Conqueror was crowned the first Norman king of England. William I also is known for his “Domesday Book,” a great census of the lands and people of England.

Questions older drivers can ask themselves to see if it’s still safe to drive Men and women know that adjustments must be made as they get older. Athletes nearing their golden years may not be able to push themselves as hard at the gym as they once did. Professionals nearing retirement age might not be able to pull long hours at the office like they used to. But aging affects more than just work and play. As men and women age, their ability to perform everyday tasks, including driving, may diminish as well. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that, as people age, certain changes they experience can affect their ability to safely operate an automobile. Changes in eyesight, physical fitness and reflexes may require aging drivers to reassess their skills behind the wheel. The NHTSA notes that drivers can ask themselves the following questions as they try to assess their driving abilities. How is my eyesight? The American Optometric Association notes that vision changes naturally occur as a person ages. Such changes do not necessarily mean drivers have to give up the keys to their vehicles. In fact, they may just require more routine eye examinations. The NHTSA says having trouble reading signs easily, recognizing someone from across the street, seeing streets signs and pedestrians, and handling headlight glare are common signs of age-related eye problems. Can I control my vehicle? Age-related loss of strength, coordination and flexibility can make it hard for aging men and women to control their vehicles. Some signs that drivers might be having trouble controlling their vehicles include trouble looking over shoulders to change lanes, difficulty moving foot from the gas pedal to the brake pedal and difficulty turning the steering wheel. Pain in the knees, legs or ankles also can make it difficult for drivers to control their vehicles. Does driving make me nervous, scared or overwhelmed? Drivers who feel confused by traffic signs and traffic (including pedestrian traffic) should stop driving until they can discuss the issue with their physicians. Medication can sometimes make drivers feel sleepy or confused, and some aging drivers even find themselves overwhelmed in otherwise normal driving situations. Are my loved ones concerned about my driving? Aging drivers may feel offended when family members question their ability to drive. However, the NHTSA notes that sometimes other people notice things about a person’s driving that the person does not. The concern expressed by loved ones should not be taken lightly. Do I drive with passengers? Drivers who routinely drive with passengers, especially young children, carry extra responsibility. As a result, such drivers owe it to themselves and their passengers to honestly assess their driving abilities. Various remedies can address age-related driving issues, and drivers should discuss them with their doctors the moment they feel as though their skills behind the wheel are starting to diminish. Springwater-Wayland EMS: Putting the Unity Back in Community By Amanda Dudek
I
n 2013, both the Wayland and the Springwater ambulance services launched from their respective fire departments and merged to become the Springwater-Wayland Emergency Medical Services Corp (SWEMS), an independent 501c3 nonprofit agency. The intent of those involved was to improve services without adding an appreciable cost to the taxpayers. Six years later, they have done that and so much more. "We currently provide EMS services and EMT basic, to the Wayland Community," said Eric Williams II, a SWEMS board member. "We also provide mutual aid calls into Springwater. While Springwater is currently served by the Livingston County EMS (LCEMS), we have provided coverage there before. Our original goal was, and still is, to regularly provide EMS service to Springwater; however, the agency will have to raise a significant amount of money before that can take place." While continuing to move towards that goal, the SWEMS nonprofit–consisting of a board of directors, line officers and members–has found several ways of serving the community. "We have responded to 251 calls so far this year, which is up from last year," explained Williams. "If paramedic services are needed, we are supported by AMR from Hornell and Cohocton or by LCEMS. We also offer CPR training from our five certified CPR instructors, and we have already held upwards of 20 classes this year."
Area residents have taken notice. "The community has been super supportive," Williams shared. "At the beginning of this year, we started a fundraiser, sending out donation letters. We received an incredible amount close to, if not more than, $2,000." Continued support will certainly make all the difference moving forward. "Although the Wayland Fire Department has been gracious enough to let us rent space from them, we plan to be in a new building of our own by 2020, so that we can be a completely independent agency," explained Williams. "Also, we replaced one of our two ambulances last year because they were both older, and this year, we hope to replace the second so that we will have two ambulances in good repair and available to serve the community at all times." The SWEMS also continues to seek volunteers. Membership is open to anybody 18 years or older without a felony record. Members will receive training for either being an EMT or being a driver, and all members must maintain CPR certifications. SWEMS will sponsor any member for Emergency Medical Technician training, and all members who wish to drive will receive extensive classroom and hands-on driver training. Perhaps most importantly, the SWEMS will continue its efforts in bringing emergency services together across several areas, providing the best possible service to local communities. "We want to put the unity back in community," said Williams."We want to become one big family, working together to meet the needs of those who rely on us." SWEMS already partners strongly with other emergency services providers such as Dansville EMS, and Williams hopes this camaraderie is contagious.
"We want to be one big family." -Eric Williams II
Volunteers with the Springwater-Wayland EMS selflessly serve area families.
This year, the SWEMS also celebrated the one-year anniversary of their Junior EMS. This exciting program allows anyone in 8th grade or above to be a part of the agency. "We do drills and community events with our Junior EMS members," said Williams. "They are permitted to participate in certain calls, as well." The Springwater-Wayland EMS continues to serve without burdening taxpayers. "We do not receive any tax money," Williams said. "We are completely supported by donations, ambulance bills and fundraisers." The SWEMS also currently serves its communities with a 100% volunteer staff. As if their selfless service wasn't enough, the SWEMS recently found another heartwarming way to support the families in their community. "Last year, we started Wayland Fun Days for the families in our community to come out and have a good time," Williams shared. "Although we didn't have the number of vendors we expected, we did have a great turn out. This year, we had triple the vendors, and an amazing number of people came out, some from as far away as Geneseo, Rochester and Brockport." Williams explained that this year's Wayland Fun Days were especially incredible because all activities were free. "We were able to make it all free," said Williams. "The bounce houses, the pony rides, the petting zoo… it was all free thanks to a generous donation from a local, Wayland business."

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY Mental side effects Stress can have an adverse effect on mood and has even been linked to depression, which the World Health Organization reports is the leading cause of disability across the globe. People suffering from stress also may experience anxiety, restlessness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, stress can compromise a person’s ability to focus, adversely affecting a person’s ability to complete their work-related tasks. That’s not insignificant, as 61 percent of respondents in the 2017 “Stress in America” survey reported that work was a significant source of their stress.
Heart Attack Symptoms Not Always Painful ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My very healthy husband collapsed and died on the way to the hospital. They worked on him for a long time but could not revive him. They didn’t do an autopsy, and they declared his death as “atherosclerotic vascular disease.” He was 79 years old and had no health problems. He came into the house and said that something was in his throat and he couldn’t swallow. He tried to cough it up, but nothing came up. He then collapsed. He had no pain. I am still puzzled by that symptom of a heart attack. Have you ever heard of that? I am really curious and still in shock. I hope you can explain. -- T.S. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear about your husband. I think he likely did have a heart attack, which is the leading cause of death in the industrialized world. Although many people have symptoms of heart disease that they ignore, some people have no symptoms until sudden death. Atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries due to cholesterol plaque and calcium in the blood vessels of the heart, almost always is present in people with a heart attack. The initial symptom of a heart attack varies widely. Throat discomfort is not rare. Cough is a common symptom, as the heart becomes damaged and the pressure in the lungs increases. The classic symptom of chest pain certainly does happen, but there are many variations. Both men and women can have atypical presentations. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has Parkinson’s disease. He also has a stent in his heart. We have been to many doctors to address a breathing problem: fast breathing. He experiences this daily, and we are told that it is anxiety. It is difficult to watch him go through this. It sometimes happens before he is due for his Sinemet, but other times right after taking it. He has been prescribed Xanax, clonidine, cannabidiol-infused gummies and a few others. One doctor says it is from Parkinson’s, but the rest say it is anxiety. -- E.W. ANSWER: Shortness of breath can have many causes, but someone with Parkinson’s disease has an unusual possibility, called “respiratory dyskinesia” (which just means “abnormal movement of the muscles of breathing”). This is an involuntary rapid breathing that causes distress, and it usually happens an hour after taking a medication like Sinemet. Changing the dose can help with diagnosis, and working with a neurologist to adjust the dose of the Sinemet (which comes in fast-acting and slowrelease formulations) can solve the problem. I would start with an expert on Parkinson’s. Keeping a diary of when he takes his medication and when the breathing trouble starts and stops will be helpful, as would a video of what it looks like when happening. Having Parkinson’s doesn’t make someone less likely to have other causes of shortness of breath, and anyone with a stent in the heart (meaning a history of blockages of at least one heart artery) is at risk of developing further blockages. Poor blood flow to the heart is another potential cause. Get the Parkinson’s evaluation first. I would not recommend anti-anxiety medications unless there is clear evidence of benefit. Ascribing a physical symptom like shortness of breath to anxiety without a thorough workup is unwise.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

Mr. & Mrs. Jared Collins and children. Thank you so much for your generosity and paying for our meal at the Olive Garden a few weeks ago. Your kind words and prayers for our brother William Coffey will never be forgotten. Patty, Julie & Joanne
On Wednesday afternoon, August 21, I dropped a portfolio of legal papers in Routes 5 & 20 between Parrish St Ext and Route 21 in Canandaigua. By the time I realized what happened, papers were strewn about on both shoulders of this busy highway. While picking up papers from one side of the road, I noticed a woman had stopped on the opposite side to get the papers which had blown there. In my state of panic, I didn’t think to ask for her name, but she definitely saved the day for me and restored my faith in the kindness of others.
Our six-month-old great granddaughter’s bunny rabbit was inadvertently left at Egypt Park a couple of weeks ago. When Great Grandpa returned later that night, the bunny rabbit was sitting and waiting on one of the picnic tables. Thank you to whoever rescued him. You saved the day (and night). Thank you, thank you!
Many thanks to the kind person who took my lost handicap parking card to the Brighton Town Hall. God Bless. M.G.
The [local transportation] service has gotten so bad this summer that I must call them first to ask if a bus is running that day. The excuse is always the same: “not enough drivers.” This is clearly a management problem, and in all my working life, any business manager who used this excuse over an extended period of time would be looking for another job.

I was at Exit 9 Dunkin Donuts drive thru on September 5th in the morning. When I got to the window, they said the person in front of me paid for me. That was a Livingston County Sheriff. Then I was there on September the 9th, the same thing happened. This time, it was someone from a local trucking company: Mat Trucking. Thank you to both! I mistakenly left $120.00 at the ESL drive up ATM in Brockport. The next person in line took the money in the bank and then deposited it into my account. Thank you, ATM Angel!

Bicyclists in [local town] seem to think stop signs and red lights don’t apply to them. They ride in the middle of the street, against traffic in the oncoming lane, and swerve back and forth or side to side. This makes it difficult for car drivers at an intersection to see you if you’re riding in the wrong lane or if switching puts you at an angle in my A-pillar blind spot. Stop being foolish. It is dangerous.

“I’m dreading fall. It is a terrifying season,” he says... “Everything shriveling up and dying.” I don’t know how to answer. Fall has always been my favorite season. Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.
A strong professional network can help professionals advance their careers and help others looking to do the same.

Tips to Rake Safely • Warm up by short walks around the yard, stretching arm circles, forward side bend & standing trunk rotation. • Check height & strength of your rake, making sure the handle is tall enough so you aren’t bending too forward, straining your back, stressing your neck & shoulders. • Raking with proper body mechanics & posture, positioning one hand on the handle & the other slightly below, making sure your elbows are still bent using the strength of your arms & legs rather than your back.
EXCEPTIONAL THERAPISTS • DEVOTED CLINICIANS • CHANGING LIVES.
WWW.LATTIMOREDEPT.COM We have advanced spine training. If you or anyone you know is experiencing back pain, consult a licensed physical therapist.
• Bagging Leaves: Avoid bending at the waist. Kneel or sit down to help reduce stress on the lower back. • Lifting Bags: Lift with your legs- bend the knees, tighten your stomach muscles & keep your back straight.
