GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

FALL IS FOR PLANTING A lot of people ask why fall is for planting. Fall has distinct planting benefits. Autumn’s cooler air temperatures are easier on both plants and gardeners. The soil is still warm, allowing roots to grow until the ground freezes. Fall has more good days for planting than spring does, when rain and other unpredictable weather can make working the soil impossible. Furthermore, our nurseries that we select our quality perennial, annual, ornamental, and tree products from would rather sell their remaining product than store their stock over winter. With that in mind, our nurseries that we work with pass along a discount on their stock to us, and we like to pass that along to our exsiting and new customers. With that being said, don’t hesitate. Call our office today or e-mail us at the link below to start rejuvinating and/or building a new landscape with some beautiful spectacular plantings to your home or business!

Don’t hesitate, our schedule is filling up fast!

MAKE FALL CLEAN-UP ECO-FRIENDLY Rake leaves sensibly Power blowers and mulchers make fast work of leaves, but at the expense of the environment. While raking, do not feel the need to remove every leaf. A certain amount of organic matter can be beneficial to the soil and even insulate the lawn somewhat. A leftover leaf here or there also may provide protection for insects and small animals. For example, many native bees spend the winter in tunnels in the ground, cracks in mortar, holes in dead wood, or within hollow stems, and they need lawn and garden litter to survive.

PITCH IN AND SAVE MONEY Home improvement projects can be expensive. While the size and complexity of a project will affect how expensive the project is, homeowners can expect to shell out a pretty penny when they renovate or remodel areas of their home. According to HomeAdvisor, an online resource for homeowners looking to connect with home improvement, maintenance and repair professionals, the average bathroom remodeling project costs $9,348, while the average home addition costs slightly less than $41,000. But renovation-minded homeowners need not reconsider their commitment to remodeling, as there are various ways to cut the costs associated with home improvement projects. One such way is for homeowners to pitch in and do some of the work themselves. Calculating labor costs can be difficult, as such costs can vary greatly depending on the project, the contractor and the amount of hired help that contractor intends to employ. However, some estimates suggest labor will account for anywhere from 25 to 50 percent of the overall cost of the project. So it’s no surprise that homeowners can save themselves substantial amounts of money by doing some of the work themselves. Homeowners who intend to do some of the labor themselves should discuss this plan with contractors during the vetting process. Before hiring a contractor, make sure homeowners’ expected labor contributions are clearly defined in the contract. It’s best to leave the most complicated parts of a project to the professionals.

A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

Caledonia Dinner Theatre Serves Up Laughs, Twists and Mayhem By Amanda Dudek

D

eath of a Hot Sauce Salesman, a humorous mystery, entertained guests in Caledonia last Saturday. The Big Springs dinner and theatrical production was hosted by Oak Knolls Manor and performed to a full house. Guests worked to unravel the mystery of Prescott Knight’s untimely demise while chuckling over the antics of the lively cast. The event was held to benefit the Big Springs Museum’s new exhibit, Shaping a Community.

Upon entering, guests were treated to a selection of drinks before mingling across the Manor’s open floor and two patios, refreshing on the warm, end-of-summer evening. Once everyone was seated, a buffet-style dinner was served. Such favorites as redskinned mashed potatoes, herb chicken and sliced roast beef were well complemented by creamy macaroni and cheese, seasonal vegetables and a garden salad. Multiple serving lines moved quickly, and guests were soon enjoying their meals.

names like Caledonia, Geneseo, Canandaigua and the Oatka region into the show delighted the audience. At the end of Act One, Judge Titus A. Drumm, played with high energy by Samantha Rychlicki, entered the play and captivated the audience, announcing that Prescott Knight had been found dead under suspicious circumstances. Judge Drumm was upstage and downstage, addressed the audience and even recruited a secretary. Next, each table of guests received a clue packet along with their dessert tray during the Intermission. Once guests were properly stumped, Judge Drumm started Act Two. As audience members raised their hands to describe a cast member’s motive and holes in his or her alibi, the coinciding cast member tried unsuccessfully to “intimidate” them into silence. Clearly unmoved, guests answered anyway, and Judge Drumm awarded them silly prizes, later to be followed up with more valuable ones. At last, not one had a valid alibi, and each one had a possible motive.

The Big Springs cast gathers to take a bow!

The show then began. Immediately setting the tone, the cast interacted with audience members without breaking character. The humorous effect of dismissing the fourth wall resulted in a highly engaged audience. Flirtatious gold digger Pepper Devine, hilariously played by the lovely Sara Brunner, was among the first to make the guests’ acquaintance, suggestively stopping by several men in the audience to ask if they were wealthy. Additional cast members soon made their appearances, as well, and the stage was set–to use a fitting pun–for murder as the audience was presented with rich, elderly Prescott Knight, his greedy family and unscrupulous acquaintances. Sassy the maid, played by Sue Hayes, had guests chortling many times with her understated, sarcastic quips and well-timed eyerolls. Paul Meloon also tipped his hat to audience titters as the somewhat licentious lawyer Fester N. Boyle. The boisterous Helen Knight, played by Janice Grattan, lit up the stage with her vivacious personality. In short, all cast members turned in excellent and entertaining performances with Jessica Laursen as Shiloh Devereaux, Jacob Rychlicki as Brick Tarmac, Kyra Brunner as Magnolia DuKane, Jenifer Milliman as Sue Rae (Momma) DuKane, Sam Urriza as W.C. (Daddy) DuKane and Jill Formella as Juan. The play was directed by Robin Finley whose choice to incorporate local place

Guests were then instructed to open the remaining envelope in their clue packet which directed their attention elsewhere. In fairly short order, the mystery was solved as the culprit was identified. Applause welled up to fill the Manor as the evening’s talented cast The fabulous Janice Grattan members bowed in turn. (Helen Knight) stands to applause! Big Springs Museum thanked Dan and Julie Welch for hosting the evening’s event in their historic beautifully-restored Wells Barn. Quitting Smoking Better Than Any Cough Syrup

Jeffrey A. Goldstein, M.D., F.A.C.G.

Office Open in Batavia Now seeing patients & doing procedures at:

190 Washington Ave., Batavia, NY

DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter smokes. She doesn’t have COPD now, but last spring she had bronchitis and was off work for a week. When she went back to work, she didn’t feel good, and her doctor told her that she had pneumonia in both lungs and wondered why she went back to work. She still takes cough syrup under her doctor’s orders. -- N.P. ANSWER: Getting someone to quit smoking is a challenge, but perhaps some advice I can give your daughter might help. The first piece of advice is that a cough necessitating cough syrup on a routine basis indeed might be a sign of COPD. There are two major forms of COPD: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The definition of “chronic bronchitis” is a productive cough for three months in each of two successive years. The second piece of advice is that quitting before there are serious symptoms is the best time to quit. Although the body has some ability to recover from the effects of chronic cigarette smoke, there is a degree of permanent damage in long-term smokers. Quitting greatly slows down the rate of ongoing damage to the lungs and reduces the risk of having lifelong symptoms of shortness of breath and cough. Quitting smoking will do more good than any cough syrup can.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Does taking Norvasc or any calcium channel blocker reduce or destroy the calcium in the bones, eventually causing osteoporosis? -- E.G. ANSWER: No. Calcium channel blockers, like amlodipine (Norvasc), work on cells in the heart and blood vessels, controlling the flow of calcium into the cell. Calcium in the cell is one of the regulators of smooth muscle cells, and for Norvasc in particular, that means its major effect is on blood vessels, causing them to open up and reduce blood pressure, and thus the amount of work the heart needs to do. Calcium in bone is used structurally, where it combines with other ions to form hydroxyapatite, the mineral that keeps bones hard and strong. The mechanism for calcium entry into bone cells is very different. Calcium channel blockers do not affect mineralization of the bone, nor do they increase the risk for osteoporosis. One group found that people on calcium channel blockers may have a slightly higher risk of fractures; however, that was thought to be due to an increased number of falls, especially in the elderly. Physicians need to take care not to use too much medication, especially ones that dilate blood vessels, as they can increase risk of dizziness and falls.

Caring for you and the community since 2001.

DR. ROACH WRITES: Many readers kindly shared their recommendations about preventing underarm odor, and the most commonly mentioned, by far, was crystal mineral salt deodorants, of which there are several brands. Several people made their own deodorants by mixing baking powder, cornstarch and olive or coconut oil. Other people noted using antibacterial soaps or cleansing products containing the same products we use in the operating room, such as chlorhexidine and hexachlorophene. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Oct. 1, 1890, an act of Congress creates Yosemite National Park, paving the way for generations of nature lovers. Yosemite’s natural beauty is immortalized in the stark black-and-white landscape photographs of Ansel Adams (1902-1984).

Games that can challenge the brain Games are as popular as ever. For evidence of that, one need look no further than his or her own smartphone. The number of hours people spend playing games on their smartphones might surprise even the most ardent players. According to the mobile research firm Apptopia, between May and July of 2018, mobile users spent a whopping 3.38 billion hours playing the wildly popular strategy game “Clash of Clans,” making it the most popular smartphone game in the world during that time period. Games might be seen as a way to unwind, but some games can potentially do more than merely provide a way to escape the daily grind. Brain teasers, riddles and crossword puzzles are just some of the types of games that can help people engage and challenge their brains while still providing a bit of escapism. A Healthier Michigan, which is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield Michigan and aims to help locals adopt healthier lifestyles, notes that the following exercises, games and platforms can help men and women challenge their brains in unique ways.

On Oct. 2, 1780, British Major John Andre is hanged as a spy by U.S. military forces in New York. Andre, an accomplice of Benedict Arnold, was captured with incriminating papers in his boot. The papers revealed Arnold’s offer to surrender West Point to the British for a bribe of 20,000 pounds. On Oct. 3, 1863, expressing gratitude for a Union Army victory at Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln announces that the nation will celebrate an official Thanksgiving holiday on Nov. 26, and on the fourth Thursday of every November thereafter.

• BrainHQ: According to Posit Science, which created the system, BrainHQ (www.aarp.brainhq.com) is a system of training the brain that was developed by neuroscientists and other brain experts. The BrainHQ platform includes various brain training exercises with hundreds of levels that can help people improve their brain function, including memory and retention. • Writing in the Stars: Similar to a crossword puzzle, this game provides a list of nine words to users, who must then find the six words that connect to from a six-point star before they can move on the next level. Available at www.happy-neuron.com, Writing in the Stars aims to help users improve their logical reasoning. • Private Eye: With a goal of helping users improve their focused attention and concentration, Private Eye (www.happy-neuron.com) asks players to peruse a grid full of intricate layers and symbols in an effort to find the item that does not belong. • Braingle: With more than 200,000 members, Braingle (www. braingle.com) is a popular online community where users can go to access brain teasers, trivia quizzes, IQ tests, and more. Users even rank the games, allowing novices to find games that might help them hone certain skills or ease their way into challenging their brains with games. Millions of people across the globe play games every day. Though players often play games to have fun, they might be helping their brains without even knowing it. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Veterans previously ineligible are now eligible. The American Legion sought the Declaration as a way to honor approximately 1,600 U.S. service members who were killed or wounded in hostile operations during periods that were not previously recognized as times of war by the federal government. Today’s passage of the Legion Act is a victory for veterans who until now have not had their service to our nation fully recognized.

It is curious but true that most of us have a natural reluctance to ask for clarification or for more explanation when we fail to understand something. Perhaps it is because asking is an admission that we do not know. No one can be expected to know everything. Even the wisest of people have areas of ignorance. But, being wise, they recognize that there is no shame in ignorance. They ask, they learn and thereby become even wiser. Only the fool merely wonders while pretending to know. There are many advantages in making one’s own funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Let us explain, without any obligation, why more and more people are taking this step.

On Oct. 4, 1918, German Chancellor Max von Baden sends a telegraph message to President Woodrow Wilson requesting an armistice between Germany and the Allied powers in World War I. After a difficult month of negotiations, World War I came to an end on Nov. 11, 1918. On the whole I take it that middle age is a happier period than youth. In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air. ~Alexander Smith (1829–1867), “An Essay on an Old Subject”

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver It was American poet and playwright Edna St. Vincent Millay -- the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for poetry, by the way -- who made the following sage observation: “A person who publishes a book appears willfully in public with his pants down.”

AUTO SECTION

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An upcoming trip could create some problems with your schedule unless you tie up as many loose ends as possible before you head out the door. Ask a friend or colleague to help you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Being eager to start a new project is fine. However, moving ahead without knowing what actually will be expected of you could cause a problem down the line. Ask some questions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting through some recent challenges in good shape might give you a false sense of security. Don’t relax your guard. You need to be prepared for what else could happen. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Caution is still advised, even though you think you’re as prepared as you need to be. Keep in mind that change is in your aspect, and you should expect the unexpected. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Lion’s gift of persuasion helps you get your points across, even to some of your most negative naysayers. An old friend might seek you out for some advice. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Being sure of your convictions is fine. But leave some room for dissenting opinions. You might learn something that could help you avoid a possible problem later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting good legal advice on what your rights actually are is the first step toward resolving that pesky problem so that it doesn’t re-emerge at a later date. Good luck. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Longtime relationships work well this week, whether they’re personal or professional. It’s a good time to invite new friends and colleagues into your life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good week to do the research that will help you uncover those irrefutable facts that can back you up on your new venture when you most need it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Change is an important factor in your aspect this week and could affect something you might have thought was immune to any sort of adjustment or “alteration.” AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Being asked to share someone’s deeply personal confidence might be flattering, but accepting could be unwise. Decline gracefully but firmly. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) As wise as you are, you could still be misled by someone who seems to be sincere but might not be. Take more time to assess the situation before making any commitments. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to face challenges that others might try to avoid, and by so doing, you set an example of courage for all.

A big Thank You to everyone who answered my notice in the Free Stuff Needed section of the GVPS. Your kindness is unbelievable and I hope you receive a blessing in return. Thanks to the GVPS for providing the space for this service. A lot of needs are met, and good stuff gets We went to the Arts Festival this weekend in our beautiful Victorian town, and there were more dogs there than vendors. Why is it that even though all the ads for the festival requested (not suggested) you leave Fido at home, people decided it didn’t mean them? No dogs mean no dogs. Most of the dogs were panting and looked hot and the hot pavement couldn’t have been good for their feet. Please people, for their safety leave them home. On 8/14, I had items to purchase or on which to make an offer. I left to get gas, and when I returned, a large dog cage was taken with no payment left. To those who were fired from our local store for not following the rules: you both were quick to judge all other employees, but when it came to you, you could do no wrong. don’t have to clean up after you. You may think this is a free service for our town but we pay our town taxes. Take care of your own garbage and recycling, please. We are one of two houses left that have no access to city water and have a failing well. The town keeps brushing our concerns and complaints off! We have also paid for the service fees related to said water that we don’t have! I am a retired scientist and engineer, environmentalist, and solar energy proponent. When I put out yard signs in support of a project, they were stolen within days. Apparently, the rabid opposition, besides being opinionated and misinformed, also has an uncivil aspect.

Should I be scared, or just disappointed in their shameful behavior? To that entitled person who patronizes every store: we service workers do not care that you are running late and must have said item right now, right away. You overbooked your own schedule. That is not our problem. Keep yourself on time. We are paid minimum wage, meaning if they could pay us less, they would. By the way, it’s not our fault that the store is out of a product you need. Deal with it like an adult. Thanks.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB

FULL TIME

Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.

Person to receive, deliver furniture and perform miscellaneous tasks. Clean driver’s license, good communication and people skills a must. References requested! Apply in person!
