DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise.Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death.

Livonia Autumn in the Village Leaps to New Heights of Family Fun
BY AMANDA DUDEK
Congratulations to the Autumn in the Village
On Saturday, September 10th, Autumn in the Village returned to Livonia a er a two-year Covid hiatus. is festival is held every year on the second Saturday of September by the Village of Livonia and is organized by a volunteer committee. In 2001, Autumn in the Village began as a way to recognize village businesses and to thank them for the patience they had shown during extensive Routes 15 & 20A renovations.
“During the rst festival, people were having a good time, and we thought, ‘We need to do this again!’” said Mayor Lathan.
Since then, the festival has grown tremendously to include children’s activities, arts and cra s, food, live music, what the Mayor calls “the biggest parade we have all year long,” and, this year, the rst annual cornhole tournament, and much more! According to Mayor Lathan, the focus of the festival is on activities for children. Admission and these activities are all free of charge. e festival also o en includes a fundraising element.
“ is year, we were so lucky to have A&R Beauty Bar put together a haircut-a-thon to help a Livonia teenage boy who is battling leukemia. ey are the unsung heroes, our shining star,” shared festival committee member Jo Ann Weber.
Beautiful, awardwinning scarecrow designed by Kate Chesbro!
- Jo Ann Weber
“Autumn in the Village is always a success when kids and families come out,” Weber said. “ at is what makes the ten months that we put into planning all worth it. It is a community working together.”

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE
(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:
Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.
Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.
Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS
New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible.
First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.
DAY TRIPS SENIORS CAN ENJOY
Zoos and aquariums: Interacting with wildlife is on the itinerary when visiting zoos and aquariums, and such establishments typically offer discounted admissions to seniors. From the famed San Diego Zoo to the Georgia Aquarium, it’s possible to get up close and personal with many species.

SHADE-TOLERANT PLANTS COMPLETE LANDSCAPES
Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees.
Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight.
While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight.
Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive.
Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs.
Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS
Start off on solid financial footing. It’s important that homeowners who want to upgrade their homes enter the home improvement process with a realistic grasp of their finances. Many home improvement projects stall when homeowners run out of money. Homeowners can avoid such unfortunate situations by only beginning a project they know they can afford. Whether funding a project with a loan or savings or a combination of both, homeowners should make an honest assessment of what they can afford to commit to a given project. If the amount of money available does not add up to the estimated cost of the project, delay the project now or you might be facing a stalled project down the road.

When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-ityourself type of job since it requires specialized training.
Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.

Thank you, Livonia!
Thank you to the wonderful businesses in Livonia NY for sponsoring Autumn in the Village. My grandchildren from Syracuse look forward to this wonderful festival as do I. This family friendly event is making memories for this Grandma and Papa!
Deepest Thanks
On August 13th at about 12:45pm, there was a horrible car accident on Route 19, just north of LeRoy. Many people stopped to help. The man in the car behind me came immediately to see if I was “all right.” The neighbor across the street came, bandaged my hand, let me use her cell phone to call my daughter, and put my frozen foods in her own freezer to preserve them. A wonderful friend who happened to be passing by, stayed with me until the ambulance arrived. Many passersby stopped to give the police an accurate report of what had happened. Most of all, I am deeply grateful to all the police, including the State Troopers who showed me great concern and protection. They were superb. Thank you to all who helped in so many ways. - Rosemary F.
Thank you, Teachers!
Thank you to teachers and staff for making the start to this school year so fun for the students. It’s nice to see everyone’s smiling faces again!
Thanks, Coach!
Thank you to girls’ soccer coaches for all your hard work and positivity! Go Braves!
Grape Fest Praise
Kudos to the Naples Grape Festival for once again providing a wonderful festival with something for everyone! With the weather cooperating as it did, it turned out to be the perfect day indeed! I hope that you had fun if you attended; I know that I did!
Vulgar Signs on Property
I have noticed in our town as well as other towns that people displaying signs on their property with vulgar words on them. Please think about others before you display foul language for the world to see. Are you helping make the world a better place, or are you adding to the abundant filth that permeates our culture? There are so many children who travel by your homes every day and have to see these awful words that they should not even know...but now do because of you. Please remove these offensive signs and show some respect to others. Help make the world kinder instead of adding more turmoil to it.
No Trash because of "Rotten Apples"
Some public areas don’t have bins because cheap [people] use those receptacles to avoid their weekly household trash disposal fee. The result is a double whammy: abused opportunity means “no public bins,” then ground litter accumulates for lack of handy receptacles! I live near a rural park without any bins, just a sign declaring a “carry in, carry out” policy. This policy is often ignored, so on my walks, I pick up the resulting roadway trash and pay for its proper disposal since others won’t accept responsibility.
Poor Service!
We certainly enjoy supporting all of our local businesses, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. On a Saturday a few months ago, we received in our mail a coupon to [a local establishment]. When [we went to use it and] the clerk rang up my order, it was full price. When I had this new coupon, our [clerk said we couldn't] use our coupon. I requested the manager to void one [item]. She said there was nothing she could do. I asked for the owner's name, and the manager said, "I don't know. Look it up on Google." How unprofessional and rude! When businesses are struggling all over this country, [this establishment] won't even honor their own coupon. It's a sad day. We are very disappointed in this local business!

GET KIDS EXCITED ABOUT VOLUNTEERING
Volunteering benefits people of all ages, but can be especially beneficial to children. Studies have indicated that teenagers who volunteer are less likely to become pregnant or use drugs. In addition, in a review of 60 studies on child engagement, Child Trends found that children who participate in civic engagement programs are likely to be more involved in school, to graduate from high school and to hold more positive civic attitudes than those who do not get involved in such programs.
Getting kids to volunteer as they progress through adolescence may not be so difficult. In its 2014 analysis of volunteering trends, Child Trends found that 39 percent of twelfth grade students volunteered at least once a month in 2014 compared to just 27 percent of eighth graders.
Older students might feel compelled to volunteer to improve their college admissions applications, but parents can take steps to get their younger children excited at the prospect of volunteering.
Set a positive example. Young children want to emulate their parents, so moms and dads who volunteer may find ready and willing partners in their children. Parents can inform their children when they volunteer and why they do so before bringing kids along to join them.
Don’tforgetfun.Youngchildrenmaybemorelikelytoembracevolunteering if the activity is fun. Kids might not find it too fun to sit next to their parents while mom and dad balance a soup kitchen’s books, but a beach cleanup excursion or a trip to refurbish an inner city park may inspire kids to spend a lifetime giving back to their communities and helping the less fortunate. Keep it simple. Kids may not enjoy volunteering activities that consume too much time or make them feel exhausted. As kids grow older, parents can encourage them to embrace more challenging activities and/or commit more time to volunteering. But keep things simple with especially young children or older children who have never before volunteered.
Try and try again. It might take some trial and error before parents find volunteering opportunities their children truly enjoy. When volunteering with children for the first time, be careful not to commit to more than one day. If children enjoy themselves, then parents can commit more time. If kids do not seem excited by an activity, parents won’t feel guilty or let the charity down by not returning.
Children can benefit greatly by volunteering, and parents can get their youngsters involved at an early age.
DID YOU KNOW? Statistics from the United States Coast Guard indicate that, in 2019, 86 percent of drowning victims in recreational boating accidents where cause of death was known were not wearing life jackets. The National Park Service reports that drowning is the top cause of visitor deaths in national parks and that nearly all of those deaths are preventable. One of the simplest ways to prevent drowning is to follow the advice of the NPS and wear a life jacket at all times when near or in the water. This includes when wading, swimming, fishing, boating, and engaging in watersports or other water-related activities. The NPS notes that there are three types of life jackets, but only two come in child and infant sizes. Inherently buoyant (primarily foam) life jackets and hybrid (foam and inflation) life jackets are available in child and infant sizes. The NPS recommends both types of life jackets for swimmers and non-swimmers. People who intend to engage in water sports should know that some hybrid life jackets are designed specifically for such activities. The third type of life jacket is inflatable life jackets, which are only available in adult sizes and should never be worn by poor or non-swimmers.

Fully Insured While many people visit yard sales looking for antiques or other unique items that likely can’t be found at traditional retailers, yard sale shoppers should know that their efforts can be great for the environment. Shoppers can browse through gently used items that no longer serve utility for the seller but may be just what buyers are looking for. Rather than throwing out belongings that get little use, people who organize a sale are reducing their contributions to nearby landfills.

SENIOR NEWS
By Matilda Charles
Free College Courses
In an attempt to keep brain cells active this winter, I have signed up for a college course. e good news is that it’s all online and it’s free. e other good news is that it’s sponsored by a major university.
It’s called Open Courseware, and I found my class on the internet. Yale, Harvard, MIT, Stanford and many others have “massive open online courses,” also known as MOOCs, and their main purpose is to provide learning opportunities. You have to appreciate MIT especially. ey make course material for their 2,600 classes “available on the web, free of charge, to any user anywhere in the world.”
Most of these open courseware classes are self-paced (do them when you want a er downloading the lecture). Most don’t get you a certi cate or a degree, but then most don’t cost anything either. Beware, of course, scammers who’d like to take your personal information and charge you for a class that’s actually free and doesn’t require you to sign up. Your best bet, until you’re familiar with open courseware, is to stick to the big-name universities.
For a three-minute video showing an explanation of MIT’s open courseware, see www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICa_4xUr8BA.
Read the ne print on the website as you hunt for a class. Read the syllabus (description of the course) and the list of texts to be used. If you’re required to read books, see if they’re free to download online. (Some of the material downloads are huge.) Pay attention to the estimated time commitment for the course you want to take.
If you de nitely want to attend in-person college but need nancial help, see www.aseniorcitizenguideforcollege.com. Click on “Find Your State Tuition Waivers” and see if any in your state are covered. Some colleges will have a link to an application for a tuition waiver for seniors; some will just have a website and phone number to call for information.
Note: e Great Courses (www.thegreatcourses.com) are not open courseware and will cost money. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

UNIQUE WAYS TO REDUCE CANCER RISK EVERY DAY
Drink more fluids. Drinking more fluids is one of the easier things people can do every day to reduce their cancer risk. The American Cancer Society recommends individuals consume eight cups of water per day, but millions likely fall far short of that amount. That’s unfortunate, as research presented at the American Association for Cancer Research International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research in 2011 found that high fluid intake was associated with a 24 percent reduced bladder cancer risk among men. In addition, a separate study funded by the Strauss Institute and published in 2020 in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that women with breast cancer consumed less water and total fluids than women who did not have breast cancer. The researchers concluded more investigation into the link between drinking more water and reducing breast cancer risk is necessary, but noted that drinking water is harmless, convenient and beneficial to many aspects of health.

INFLAMMATION
Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms.
While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day
In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include:
• Taking the stairs
• Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work
• Getting off the bus or subway one stop early
• Parking in the farthest space from the door
• Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings
to Care for Animals
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We can’t have pets in our apartment, but I want to teach my children about responsibility and compassion for animals. Are there volunteer opportunities for kids out there? -- Jessica in Seattle
DEAR JESSICA: ere certainly are volunteer opportunities for kids in most communities. e hard part can be nding one that will work for your kids, t in with school schedules and provide the kind of rewarding experience you want them to have. PAWS.org, for example, has several volunteer opportunities in the Lynnwood, Washington, area. e shelter doesn’t allow kids under 18 to work directly with animals, but it hosts a special Day of Service for those 10 or older to help spruce up its dog trail, and hosts a PAWSwalk each summer. Kids also can choose to “donate their day” -- ask for donations to the organization in lieu of birthday presents, for example. at’s just one organization in one area. Kids and parents should search for local shelters and animal-rescue organizations to see what volunteer or fundraising opportunities are available. Another, more immediate opportunity may be right in your neighborhood. Do you have friends or neighbors with pets? Are they willing to let your kids visit and play with their dog or cat? Is there an elderly relative or friend who needs help walking their dog or taking their cat to the veterinarian? Remember that, as the parent, you’ll need to supervise your kids for many of these events or pet-care opportunities. But you’ll be giving them key tools to be awesome pet owners of the future.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Herbal Product Can Help Soothe
Gastro-intestinal Symptoms
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had gastroparesis for many years. About two years ago, it led to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (which I once read about in your column). I worked with a dietician for several months. One of the treatments she suggested was an herbal product called Iberogast. The combination of herbs helps the stomach to empty quicker. I use it each night before bed (as part of a 12-hour fast), or whenever I have overeaten and feel bad. It has been most helpful for me. Iberogast is available online. -- L.E. ANSWER: Iberogast is a combination of nine medicinal plant extracts. Studies in Germany and Austria, where it is most commonly used, have shown the medication to be more effective than the placebo (and about as effective as one common prescription medication) in the treatment of functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel disease. The medication has generally been regarded as safe, but there are rare cases of liver injury associated with this medication, with at least one of which eventually requiring a liver transplantation.
All medications -- whether prescription or overthe-counter, natural or synthetic -- have the potential for harm. Iberogast is pretty safe, with just a handful of bad outcomes in its 50 years of use, involving millions of doses, but it can still cause rare and severe adverse effects. Iberogast is worth considering in people whose symptoms have not been successfully treated with other therapies.

DID YOU KNOW?
Instances of early-onset dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in individuals under the age of 65 are on the rise. According to the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Health IndexSM, roughly 131,000 commercially insured Americans between the ages of 30 and 64 were diagnosed with early-onset dementia or Alzheimer’s disease in 2017. That marks a 200 percent increase since 2013. Diagnosis rates among individuals between the ages of 45 and 54 were especially high in 2017 compared to 2013. Within that age group in 2013, 2.7 out of every 100,000 people were diagnosed with early-onset dementia orAlzheimer’s disease. That number rose to 10.9 out of every 100,000 people in 2017, marking a 311 percent increase in just four years.

BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS
Balance engagement with patience. NFIB® recommends that business owners tone down their sales efforts without coming off as disengaged. Warmly welcome visitors to the booth or stall and express a willingness to discuss products customers appear interested in. But keep in mind that many people attend festivals and marketplaces to browse, so give them space after welcoming them to the booth.

SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
(NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up.
What You Can Do
1. Spend time with your children.
2. Be a positive role model.
3. Send a text to stay connected when far away.
4. Read to your children.
5. Remember #DadJokesRule!
There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2
What Dads are Already Doing
Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved:
• 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3
• 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4
• 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5
• Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6
• Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7
Eventhoughfathersarelargelymoreinvolvedthaninpreviousgenerations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8
To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign.
“All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated.
The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. It only takes a moment to make a moment.

POISON PREVENTION TIPS
Use original containers. It’s tempting to transfer certain cleaning products or chemicals to other bottles or jars for ease of use, but this can be dangerous. People in the home may mistakenly ingest something if it is transferred to a beverage container or something typically used for food storage. Plus, should ingestion occur, you will no longer have the safety label in place. That means you won’t have immediate access to safety protocols that can save lives.

LIVONIA COMMUNITY CHURCH
God Is On The Move – And So Are We!
Our INAUGURATION SERVICE will be on October 9, 2022 at 10:30am with Dr. Fred Antonelli, President of Elim Bible Institute & College as our special speaker.
We have moved just a few blocks from our previous High Street location to 41 Spring Street, the former St. Joseph Catholic School, where we are now totally handicap accessible and have adequate parking.
If you are looking for a home church whose authority is based on the Bible as the inerrant Word of God, Livonia Community Church may be the fellowship with which you would identify. We endeavor to function as much as possible in line with Kingdom of God values, to accept people as they are and disciple them into their unique God-given purpose in life.
You can learn more about us by going to our website www.LivoniaCC.org and we invite you to visit us soon.

It is probably true that very few saintly people got that way entirely as a matter of their own choice. They wanted the approval of their peers (don’t we all?) and so they conducted their lives in a way such as to win approval. They were “flattered” into virtue.
On the other hand, few people have ever been persuaded to give up bad habits by threats..... “bullied” out of vice. The moral here, if one may be drawn, is that most of us do what is expected of us. We can best inspire others by having high expectations.
Every adult, who might some day be required to make funeral arrangements, should be fully informed before the need arises. We are here to answer your questions and to offer advice, without obligation.

But recent grads can get a head start on their competition by beginning their searches immediately after earning their degrees. Create a list of a few target companies you have your eye on, and then tap into your network to find a contact at each company and reach out to that contact directly.
