DENTAL IMPLANTS
Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to learn how to solve your endless dental problems today with Teeth Tomorrow™ dental implants!
Visit www. I Vsmiles.com for more details. Treatment of gum disease, root canal therapy, and restorative services such as fillings, crowns and bridges can help patients towards better dental health. We provide these services at Lakeview Dental. There are times, however, when it might make more sense from a long term solution standpoint to replace teeth with a poor prognosis with dental implants. This determination can only be made after a comprehensive consultation where the risks and benefits of implant treatment are reviewed and all possible treatment options are discussed. Call us for a complimentary consultation to determine what is best for you.

Call or 586-6206 for appointment “Genesee River 9044” by Pollinator at the English language Wikipedia. Licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0 via Commons Ever since we moved to Mount Morris, my significant other and I have very much enjoyed fishing and walking and finding unique pieces of driftwood down by the Genesee River in town. Unfortunately, over the past couple of years, the river bank, sand and even the rocks in the water are getting covered with trash, glass, even an old 10 speed bike. My last trip down to the river ended up being very disheartening. The bike was absently tossed into the river, again! I once again pulled it out. Then as I walked further, there was a deceased deer floating in the water. I just want to know why this keeps happening. If you fish down there, please, take your garbage with you. It’s really not
that hard to do. All the kids and teenagers who also go down there, walking and sometimes swimming, and all the dogs that are there once in a while, drinking the water, also do not need to worry about getting cut on the glass. Or worse, getting hung up on fishing line that always seems to be left there. The bottles that are broken, the graffiti on the rocks and woods, and all the cans and liquor bottles are making the river so ugly. My point, if you bring it with you, take it with you. I, for one, would love to keep going to my place of solitude without worrying about, or seeing all the garbage and destruction, that a lot of people are putting that poor river through.

Preparing for hospice care Sometimes patients succumb to a disease, in spite of the best treatments and support. When the time comes for a family to confront a loved one’s declining health, hospice care can be a dignified way to make that person’s final days as comforting as possible. Hospice is a type of care designed to make the final moments of a person’s life as pain-free and manageable as possible. It can take place in a medical facility, but very often hospice care occurs at home or wherever the ill person feels most comfortable. Hospice care is usually the last step when all other options have been exhausted. Making the decision to move a loved one to hospice care can be an emotionally wrenching time. Decisions such as these may be better made at a time in a person’s life when he or she is not sick. That is why living wills that spell out details for end-of-life care can be quite valuable. Decisions are made with a level head and not wrought with emotions. Such living wills also can take the pressure off of family members who may not feel comfortable making such decisions on their own or in concert with relatives. Hospice is a type of care and a philosophy that focuses on the palliative care of terminally ill patients. Rather than providing medication to try to treat the illness, medicine is offered to make a person more comfortable and remove any pain. Psychological therapy may also be offered to help the person come to terms with the end of life. Although hospice is a concept that has gradually evolved since the 11th century, the principles of modern hospice care can trace their roots to the 1950s and Dame Cicely Saunders, a nurse and social worker who is known as the creator of the hospice movement. If hospice care is outlined in a dying person’s living will or expressed wishes, there are some guidelines that can be followed by the sick individual. • Visit various medical care centers to see if away-fromhome options provide the care and environment you desire. Be sure to establish what type of hospice care you prefer. This may

include care within a nursing home or hospital, or in the comfort of your own home. • Sign a medical durable power of attorney. This signed document gives authority to an adult age 18 or older, who then has the right to make necessary medical and healthcare decisions for you in the event you become incapacitated. • Clearly indicate your wishes regarding resuscitation. A signed document may alert emergency healthcare personnel or others of your wishes not to be resuscitated. This document must be signed by you and a doctor and witnessed by others. • Decide on the duration of care. Hospice care generally lasts six months. This enables a long stretch of palliative care. Should you live beyond the time period, hospice care can continue. Studies have shown that patients who receive hospice care for at least 30 to 60 days gain greater benefit than those who are placed in hospice only in their final days. • Investigate financial options for hospice. Medicare and Medicaid provide hospice coverage in 44 states. Many private insurance plans have a hospice benefit as well. Understand how payment is made to figure out if private funding will be necessary. Not all hospice programs are the same. Certain core models of care are followed by many hospice facilities, but options vary. Hospice can provide comfort in a person’s final days and help sufferers better enjoy life and time spent with loved ones in these last days.

A N o te O fTha n ks from Tom Taylor For 34 years of amazingly blessed ministry I thank the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church and the community of Avon. I am also grateful for all the gracious gifts, cards and well wishes on the occasion of my retirement. I am humbled and honored that my efforts to serve have been so well received. The people of First Presbyterian are wonderful, down to earth, devoted brothers and sisters in the faith. And our community is filled with talented, engaged, committed citizens who truly do make our town and village a delightful place in which to live, raise a family, work, play and serve. Our service organizations are a tremendous asset to our community with all they do and all they inspire others to do. We have families of faith who live their commitment and witness to their understandings of the divine. Their ministries enrich our community in countless, often unseen, ways. I have been so blessed and am so grateful that God brought me to this place. I treasure our community, the church I have served and the many people with whom I have worked over the years. My family and I thank all of you, and especially our dear church family. I know that God has plans for us all, and I am excited to see how those plans will unfold. Again, thank you, and thank God for all of you. - Tom

47th Annual Gun & Hunting Show I want to say thank you for allowing me to serve our town as the Highway Superintendent for the past 13 years. I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed my job. I worked alongside four great guys: Darrell, Danny, Keith, and Jerry, and I want to thank them for all of their hard work over the years and for making the supervisor part of my job easy. To all of the town residents who always had my back: coming out to caucuses, town hall meetings, and voting, I sincerely thank you for your support. A huge thank you goes to Don Higgins and Livingston County for throwing Mike Derrenbacher and me one heck of a surprise retirement party. Thank you to all of those folks who came out Saturday night. It was incredibly gratifying to find out that so many people appreciated my work and please know that I am truly grateful for your kindness, thoughtfulness, and your support. I will sincerely miss being the West Sparta Highway Superintendent, but it is time for me to move on and for someone else to have the hot seat. I wish Cory Mahany all the best. Again, thank you West Sparta for giving me the opportunity to keep your roads safe.

Thinking about dental implants? Did you know that dental implants are frequently the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth? Rather than resting on the gum line like removable dentures, or using adjacent teeth as anchors like fixed bridges, dental implants are long-term replacements.

NEW REASON BEHIND CHILDHOOD TOOTH DECAY? Despite the gains provided by fluoridated water, tooth decay is the leading chronic childhood illness in the United States. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research reports that 42% of U.S. children aged 2-11 have primary-tooth decay, and 21 % of children aged 6-11 have tooth decay in their permanent teeth. While this high incidence of tooth decay among young children can partially be explained by poor dental hygiene and high consumption of sugary foods and drinks, new research suggests that chronic stress during pregnancy may raise the risk of tooth decay in a woman’s children. While a direct relationship has not been found, improving a pregnant woman’s quality of life may lead to improved health of her children’s teeth. All children need early and regular dental care. During well-child visits the doctor will check your child’s dental health. A visit to a dentist is recommended within 6 months of when your child’s first tooth comes in but no later than your child’s first birthday. We’re currently accepting new patients and welcome your call to schedule an appointment for superior dental care. P.S. The research mentioned above, which involved an analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, also found that children who were not breast-fed were also more likely to have tooth decay.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Can Heart Surgery Cause Hot Flashes? DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had hot flashes, similar to those experienced by post-menopausal women, ever since my coronary bypass in 1990. I can be sitting quietly in a chair reading or at my computer, and suddenly I find myself dripping with perspiration. I also have had panic attacks, with increased heart rate and other physical symptoms. A few years ago, a 24-hour EKG showed heartrhythm irregularities and that my heart stopped briefly while asleep. If these idiosyncrasies of my autonomic nervous system are a consequence of my time on the heart-lung machine for the bypass, I’m not complaining -- just curious. You said that studies have been done on almost everything. Is this one? -- W.S.B. ANSWER: I found that a lot of people complain of similar symptoms. I also found that indeed, the autonomic nervous system (the part of the nervous system that regulates temperature, sweat, blood pressure and many other critical aspects of body function without our being consciously aware of it) can be adversely affected by cardiac surgery. Some authors have suggested that the autonomic nervous system changes are one mechanism by which people are more likely to have depression after cardiac surgery. I found several possible explanations why the ANS changes with bypass surgery, but no clear consensus. I would want to be sure that there are no other causes of these symptoms. It sounds like you have had an extensive evaluation, but I certainly would be concerned about a sudden fast heart rhythm, such as atrial fibrillation. The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heart rhythm disturbances in greater detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered a long time with GERD. I was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous disease. My doctor recommended a procedure called a Nissen fundoplication. Since the procedure, I have not had heartburn again. I would do it again, after what I went through. I get an endoscopy every two years to keep an eye on my disease. -- G.D.B. ANSWER: Barrett’s esophagus is a complication of longstanding reflux. It is diagnosed when the lining of the esophagus starts to look like the lining of the stomach. Barrett’s esophagus can progress to cancer of the esophagus. About 0.2 percent of those with Barrett’s per year will develop cancer, which sounds low, but if you live with the condition for 25 years, that’s about a 5 percent risk. Surgery for reflux disease is done only rarely. However, it is very effective (85 percent to 90 percent). The most common reason to consider surgery is inadequate relief from medications and lifestyle changes. However, severe erosions from acid in the esophagus, inability to take medications, a stricture (partial closure) of the esophagus and Barrett’s esophagus are all reasons to consider surgery. Surgery appears to reduce the risk of cancer more than other treatments.

Did You Know? While many in North America are aware of home price, some might be surprised to learn just how expensive the continent’s most expensive homes are. According to Forbes.com, the most expensive home in North America is in the ritzy resort town of Bridgehampton, NY, which is home to a 25,000 square-foot home valued at $75 million. The property includes 60 acres of waterfront farmland as well as a U.S. Golf Association-rated golf course. To get to the second most expensive home in North America, one need not travel very far from No. 1. The $70 million triplex penthouse at the Pierre in NYC encompasses the hotel’s top three floors and boasts double reception rooms and a paneled library. For those who can’t afford the whole thing, the property is also available in two parts, at $11 million and $59 million. The third most expensive property is on the West Coast. Located in Malibu, Calif., No. 3 on the list is a $65 million gated compound on a private bluff that covers 7 acres ofland. Lake Tahoe is home to the fourth most expensive North American property. Valued at $60 million, Sierra Star in Nevada’s Incline Village is only 10 years old but includes an 11,000 square-foot main home and two large guesthouses, for a total of 18 bedrooms. FH109845

D id you k now ? M any home improvement projects involve hanging decorative items, such as photo frames or shelving. Homeow ners frequently w restle w ith nails, screw s and hanging hardw are, perhaps creating more holes in their w alls than is necessary to get items level and in the right spots. Instead of playing a guessing game of figuring out w here the hanging holes or hooks are located on the back of items, use your office equipment to make life easier. M ake a copy of the back of the item you’re trying to hang w ith a printer/scanner or a copy machine, making sure to copy the item to full scale. Print the copy at full size and use it to drill the hanging holes. If you don’t have access to a copy machine or scanner, use a piece of tape to measure the distance betw een the hanging holes on the back of the frame. Stick the tape to the w all and then put your nails or screw s at the ends of the tape.

You know you’re supposed to do it tw ice a year. Well, as it turns out, w hile even a quic k, eyeball roof-c hec k is recommended this time of year, there’s a fallback option. You could just check your attic instead. “ Roofs ac tually c reate an insulated barrier that helps trap heat inside, and most attic spaces are located right below them,” explains Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for the Advanc ement of Roofing Excellence. “ That makes them perfect for spotting potential problem areas and damage w ithout w orrying about falling.”

The Memorial Day Detachment # 468 of the Marine Corps League would like to thank everyone who participated in the Toys For Tots campaign for 2015. We appreciate the organizations and businesses who participated as drop off points and the generosity of everyone in Ontario and Livingston Counties who donated toys. We were able to collect and distribute 4,000 toys through our participating agencies. A lot of children had a great Christmas because of all of you. Thank you and we look forward to 2016. On Monday, December 29th I was in Denny’s in Batavia alone having breakfast. I am a widow of 20 years plus and dine alone quite often, and across from
me a beautiful family were also having breakfast. A husband and wife and I assume their daughter who had 2 beautiful well behaved twin daughters. They left before I did; they glanced over and gave me a nice smile. After they left the waitress came over and told me they had paid for my breakfast. I don’t know if they are local or just passing through. I just want to say Thank You to them. I will pass it on. A Grateful Senior Citizen The residents of Lakeville Estates want to give a huge THANK YOU to all the local merchants who were so generous with their donations of gift cards and merchandise to use as door prizes at our Community Christmas Party. Gratefully Yours, Residents of Lakeville Estates Hats off to Caledonia Mayor Debbie Davis for securing a third grant for the culverts on Mill Street. As a tax payer it’s encouraging to see our federal & state tax dollars put back into our community & not always others. Keep up the good work!!!
Cat overpopulation is not a cat problem, it’s a people problem. People caused it, people can fix it. All cats deserve a home and love; they should not be living wild outside. Please do not get a cat or kitten if you cannot have it spayed or neutered or keep it in at all times, and give it a lifetime home. Aid financially or help if you can those trying to trap, neuter & release feral cats. If you can, give a shelter cat or two a good home.
our home, even on the opposite side of the house. My wife even wears ear plugs to bed and she can STILL hear it. If it keeps up I will contact the authorities. We are up early for work and we need to sleep!
Just a reminder from Driver’s Education class, when vehicles turn right at an intersection onto a 4lane road, stay in the right lane, then put on your turning signal to merge to the Left lane. Those turning left onto a 4-lane road, stay Veterinarians, please make in the left lane, and then put your turning signal on the cost to euthanize an to merge to the right lane. animal as low as you As a quick reminder, when possibly can. Many animals turning, stay in the closest suffer needlessly as their lane, then merge into the owners cannot afford the other lane making sure lane high cost. Do it for the is clear & your turning animals. signal is on. Driver’s Ed While driving yesterday, I should NEVER have been cut from school budgets. If had two cars pull out in you drive, learn the rules of front of me! When I looked in my rear view mirror both the road & law enforcement of the rules as well. times there were no cars behind me. Yes, you “made it” but only because I braked. I could understand if I had 4 or more cars behind me but to wait an extra 30 seconds or so to be safe, why not? A neighbor up the hill from us lets their stupid dog bark incessantly, even late into the evening (10/ 11pm). If you are not going to take care of a pet properly, then DON’T HAVE ONE! Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger.

Age-Appropriate Volunteer Ideas 5 to 8: Children of this age tend to like doing things with their hands. Activities that foster this enjoyment are beneficial to all. Ideas for kids to consider include working at a soup kitchen or helping parents deliver food to needy individuals. They can also be an asset at a senior center, playing board games with the elderly who may not have grandchildren of their own. 9 to 13: Adolescents can partake in volunteer work that enables them to be a bit more independent. A good idea is for kids to volunteer to do work around the neighborhood for different neighbors. Perhaps someone needs help maintaining the front lawn. Someone else may appreciate snow shoveling services. Older children can help shop for groceries for housebound individuals. 14 and up: Teenagers can do activities that fit with their ideals. Maybe they want to help clean up a beach or a park. Others can help renovate an abandoned lot into a skateboard park or kids play area. Kids may want to volunteer at school by being mentors to younger students. There are so many opportunities.

“Children are educated by what the grown-up is, rather than by his talk…”
~ Carl Gustav Jung It is all too easy to send children off to school and feel we are doing all we can by simply seeing to it that the kids are not tardy. Jung, a Swiss psychologist of the early 20th century, reminds us that a good example is worth more than great quantities of conversation. Parents, as well as teachers, should be aware that their attitudes and actions toward life and toward learning, are the most powerful influence on young lives, and be guided accordingly. We are keenly aware of our responsibility to serve families in immediate need. We also assist those who desire to pre-arrange their own services, well in advance of need. Feel free to ask for our advice and counsel…without any obligation.

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

CARVED IN STONE As you walk through older cemeteries in particular, you will likely notice that the headstones are largely a mix of marble and granite. Because marble lends itself to elegant carvings and design that often mimic classical sculpture, it was the material of choice for gravestones throughout much of the 19th century. However, because it is composed of dense crystalline or granular metamorphic limestone, marble is a relatively soft stone that is prone to erosion. Because of this, there was a widespread switch to granite during the following century and up to today. This igneous rock composed primarily of quartz, feldspar, and some mica forms as magma cools, making it more likely to endure the test of time in the cemetery. KEVIN W.
