HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. For more information on NaturVet products, please visit www.NaturVet.com or call (888) 628-8783.

Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation. We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Test results taken on February 20, 2019 show that our system exceeded the standard or maximum contaminant level (MCL), for Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM). The standard for TTHM is 80 micrograms per liter (mg/I). The average level of TTHM over the last year was 86.00 mg/I. To the party who left 2 bags of garbage at the end of my driveway on 1/15/19: You left it after the collector stopped at my house. I went through your garbage: Cheesecake factory, McDonald’s, Subway, Marketplace food take out, canned cat food, Powerade bottles, purple colored Friendly’s ice cream, dryer lint. And you left a piece of paper that identifies who you are. If you are having difficulty with the disposal of your garbage, there are resources to help you. Assuming you can just leave your trash at a random house, however, is not the answer. Please ask for help if you are in need. It is all around you, but you have to ask. Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Makeup can help counter the look of dark shadows and pigmentation around the eyes. Use a shade that is opposite the color of the circles to camouflage them. For example, use orange-yellow tones to combat blue-purple shading under the eyes. Makeup artists also advise applying concealer in the shape of a triangle. That way a person is creating a light arrow that draws attention to the bright part of her eyes.

585-243-9150 REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE (NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have.
Elderly People in your area need your help.
The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications.
• Doctor Appointments • Errands • Companionship • Meals
“AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack. “If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness. Page 18

SALOME’S STARS ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes isn’t easy for you. But if you do it, you’ll gain a better perspective of what you need to do to achieve your goals. Be open to new ideas. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) There are still some problems you might have to deal with before moving on to your next project. It’s a good idea to accept help from those who share your objectives. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It’s time to recognize the difference between those who are truly concerned for you and those who simply plan to use your good nature to their advantage. New ideas become increasingly attractive. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Depending on a promise made becoming a promise kept could be more than a mite unwise at this time. It’s best to proceed on your own rather than wait for aid that might never arrive. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A recently revitalized relationship might not be quite what the Big Cat expected. But give yourself more time to deal with the changes. A little flexibility can go a long way. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A major change could prompt more adjustments. Some of them might be difficult to deal with at first. But hang in there, and before you know it, you’ll be coasting to your next goal. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your sense of justice prompts you to speak out against an unfair situation, even if you seem to be the only one who feels that way. But you soon learn that many others agree with you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Creating a fuss is not usually your style. But that doesn’t mean you should tolerate an illmannered attitude. Speak up for yourself, and you’ll earn the respect of others. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might have a few loose ends to tie up before you can stamp your project as complete. But once that’s done, you might want to celebrate with someone special in your life. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Disappointment darkens the Goat’s mood. But close friends rally to pull you through with words of encouragement. Use their confidence in you to rebuild your own selfesteem. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An upcoming decision might be more difficult with inaccurate information. Best to recheck the data you have at hand right now to be sure it won’t mislead you later. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An offer you previously turned down might no longer be available. But if you do some checking around, you could find something else that would suit you just fine. BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in helping those who cannot help themselves. Although it embarrasses you, the fact is, people like you and tell you so.

Stomach “Flu” Is Not Actually Flu

DEAR DR. ROACH: With the flu season coming on, would
Doctors of Audiology Caring for you and the community since 2001.
Delivering The Freedom Of Choice THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY Behavioral side effects Behavior also can be affected by stress, which may cause some people to abuse drugs or alcohol. Some may even turn to tobacco, either becoming a smoker or smoking more if they’re already smokers. Smoking has been linked to a host of negative physical side effects, including an increased risk of developing cancer. Angry outbursts, social withdrawal and overeating or undereating are some additional potential side effects of stress on the body.
you please discuss the difference between what people call the “stomach flu” and what the flu really is? I have two friends who said they weren’t getting the flu shot anymore because despite having it, they got the flu. They each described several hours of throwing up, but feeling better the next day. I suggested that they probably had a gastrointestinal episode and not influenza, which is a respiratory disease. They insisted that they had the flu, and they’d always learned that the stomach flu is influenza and the flu shot is meant to prevent it. Since then I’ve spoken to two others who believe the same thing. -- G.C. ANSWER: You are right that there is much confusion about what influenza is. Influenza typically begins with sudden onset of fever, headache, fatigue and severe body and muscle aches. Influenza occurs about two days after exposure. There also often are symptoms of cough, sore throat and nasal discharge, just as there are with the common cold, but the sudden onset, fever (commonly 100 to 104 degrees) and muscle aches help distinguish cold from flu. Gastrointestinal symptoms -- such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea -- are less common in influenza, and these symptoms in absence of the major manifestations listed above makes the diagnosis of flu very unlikely. In late fall through early spring, some diarrheal illnesses (mostly viral) are common, but you are correct that these are NOT influenza. The flu shot contains viral proteins, not live influenza, and it is incapable of causing the flu. Many people will have a sore arm and sometimes mild fever and body aches after a flu shot. This is just part of the body’s reaction, and it goes away by itself within 24 hours. There is a live influenza vaccine given by nasal spray, which also generally has mild side effects. This may be given to adults under 50. The flu shot is not perfect: You still can get the flu after receiving the shot. However, the flu shot is effective at reducing the most serious cases of flu, such as influenza pneumonia, which can be life-threatening or fatal. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a healthy 50-year-old woman, and I recently had my gallbladder removed. What are the effects of not having this organ? -- I.T. ANSWER: The gallbladder stores bile and release it when necessary after a meal. Bile is made by the liver and is needed for proper digestion, especially of fats. After gallbladder removal, usually because of gallstones, the liver takes over the job by storing bile in bile ducts, and releasing it at the right time, under the influence of hormones, such as cholecystokinin. After surgery, most people have no problems with digestion, as their body gets used to the new status quo after a few weeks. Rarely, people who have had their gallbladder removed can develop postcholecystectomy syndrome, which manifests as upper abdominal pain. There are several possible causes. Discovering it requires expert evaluation, usually by the surgeon, and it often involves CT scans and a special kind of MRI (MRCP) to evaluate the biliary tract. Retained stones in the bile ducts, leakage of bile and strictures (narrowings) in the bile ducts are the most common causes of PCS.

Notre Dame Student Plans Benefit for Autism Nature Trail Story Courtesy of Notre Dame High School sensory perception and integration through spatial orientation, pattern recognition, balance, and materials manipulation. Guides for increasing communication skills, language development, and body movement utilizing the Trail are in development by researchers. Staffing and programming will be coordinated by Camp Puzzle Peace/Family Autism Center of Rochester. Faith’s fundraiser on Saturday, March 23 in the Notre Dame High School gym features a family-friendly cornhole tournament, raffles and auctions. Local radio personality and Notre Dame alumnus Jimi Jamm has volunteered his time as MC for the event which runs from 4:00-6:30 PM.
Senior Faith Falkowski and Principal Wade Bianco kicked off Inclusion Month at Notre Dame High School in Batavia. (Photo used with permission)
Faith Falkowski of Batavia first heard about a nature trail designed for persons with autism spectrum disorder when she was a freshman at Notre Dame High School. Now, as a senior who is headed to D’Youville College in the fall to study occupational therapy, she has become a strong advocate for the planned Autism Nature Trail (The ANT) at Letchworth State Park - so strong that she is spearheading a fundraiser for the project at her school. The event has sparked a month-long set of activities at Notre Dame to promote inclusion in the school and community-at-large. Students will be encouraged to sign an inclusion pledge to accept people of all abilities, respect others and act with kindness and compassion, and include people with special needs in every aspect of their lives. Living with a family member who has special needs can limit the entire family when it comes to recreation and social activities. Most services are offered in urban centers, putting rural residents at an even greater disadvantage. “To have this first-of-its-kind trail so close to where I live and go to school is really exciting,” says Faith. The ANT is a 1.25 mile loop to be located in the state park voted #1 in the country in 2015. While this experience in nature has been designed (Photo used with permission) by experts specifically for those with autism and related disorders, it will be a popular destination for all who want to take advantage of a stunning natural environment in a safe and inclusive setting.
Faith and members of her family are sewing dozens of bean bags for the event with duck cloth donated by JoAnn Fabrics in Batavia and feed corn donated by Tractor Supply in Warsaw. Students in Jared Radesi and Scott Henahan’s Building Trades program at Genesee Valley Educational Partnership in Batavia are designing and building cornhole boards that can be used by other ANT volunteers for future fundraising tournaments. All the materials needed for the boards were donated by the Batavia Home Depot. Winners in each of 3 age brackets will receive trophies, compliments of Joe’s Pro Shop in Batavia. Raffle items come from far and wide and include gift cards for local goods and services, themed baskets, oneof-a-kind wood and metal items, and highly collectible pieces, such as a photo and ball cap autographed by actor Joe Mantegna (who is honorary chair for The ANT) and a celebrity package from the TV show “Modern Family.” The appeal of being involved with The ANT, according to Faith, is the ability to tie her future career interest to her current role as a student, to demonstrate that she and her Notre Dame classmates want all individuals to be able to access the jewel that is Letchworth State Park, and to help build a unique experience in nature that will be available for generations of special needs visitors. For more information about the event at Notre Dame on March 23, call (585) 201-8066 or email letchworthsensorytrail@gmail.com. Much like adults can benefit from participating in hobbies, children can reap rewards from engaging in hobbies. According to the Child Development Institute, hobbies give children a chance to express themselves. The CDI also notes that hobbies can play an important role in children’s self-discovery and boost their self-esteem. Some children may discover hobbies on their own, requiring little if any assistance on the part of their parents. For example, some kids may display an interest in music that parents, even those with no such musical inclination, can foster by purchasing certain instruments. But some children may need a little more prompting, and parents of such boys and girls can take certain steps to help their youngsters find rewarding hobbies. Involve kids in your own hobbies. Kids look up to their parents and often want to emulate what their mothers and fathers do. If possible, involve children in your own hobbies. Gardeners can teach their youngsters how to grow and tend to a garden, while painters can host family painting nights where everyone is encouraged to create their own masterpiece. Parents whose hobbies are more adult-oriented, like woodworking, can still involve their children. For example, work with children to design a new item, then show them how the item goes from paper to finished product; just avoid allowing them to use any unsafe tools or machines. Let kids choose an activity. While some children might take to hobbies their parents favor, others might need to be given some freedom to find their own activities. Afford youngsters this chance, recognizing that it might take some time before kids find an activity that genuinely sparks their passion. Be a source of encouragement. Some hobbies may prove more difficult than kids first imagined, requiring some perseverance before they can be enjoyed fully. In such instances, observe youngsters while they engage in the activity. If they appear to be enjoying themselves but are periodically frustrated, encourage them to keep trying. If kids appear to be disinterested in overcoming any struggles, then they might benefit by pursuing another hobby. Don’t hesitate to focus on fun. Hobbies can teach kids valuable lessons and provide a sense of fulfillment, but it’s important that parents not overlook the importance of fun in regard to their children’s hobbies. Hobbies can provide children with the same respite from busy schedules that they do adults, and that break should be as fun as possible.

Extend the life of your vehicle: Scale back on short trips. The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicle’s exhaust system. On longer trips, that condensation will gradually evaporate. However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler. Short trips also can negatively affect gas mileage. When possible, leave your car at home on trips into town when you can just as easily walk or ride a bicycle. Over time, reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and improve your fuel efficiency as well. AUTOMOTIVE

Today’s auto manufac turers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instanc es, roof rac ks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

Four Ways To Remain Mentally Sharp In Retirement
\(NAPS)—Many retirees share a fear of gradually losing their ability to think as clearly as they used to or remember simple information such as other people’s names. And while everyone has the occasional “senior moment,” medical research indicates that aging by itself is generally not a cause of cognitive decline. “Studies have shown that you can help prevent cognitive decline and reduce the risk of dementia with some basic good health habits,” according to Harvard Medical School’s Healthbeat newsletter. Here are four simple steps to keep your mind sharp at any age: 1. Exercise: It’s important to stay physically active. Simple routines such as taking exercise classes at your health club or taking walks in your neighborhood every day can do wonders for your mental health. Just get moving. “The cognitive benefits of exercise have been understood for so long,” notes the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. 2. Serve: Research published by the American Psychological Association found that volunteering in later life “is associated with significant psychosocial, physical, cognitive and functional benefits for healthy older adults.” Science is now confirming what many have learned by experience: People often feel better after they have served others and enjoyed the time spent helping someone else. 3. Learn: Experts think that ongoing education and learning new things may help keep you mentally sharp simply by getting you in the habit of staying mentally active. Take a class from a senior center or community college, make it a habit to visit the library and pick up a new book each week. “Challenging your brain with mental exercise is believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them,” according to Harvard Medical School. 4. Finances: A study published by The Journals of Gerontology found that “financial strain was a strong and robust predictor of worsening mental health” among older adults, including anxiety and depression symptoms. Another way to help keep yourself mentally healthy in retirement is to make sure you have ample cash on hand to help pay off unexpected health care bills or fund any renovations that might need to be made to your home. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property and—as such—you have the right to sell that policy anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy in a “life settlement” transaction, the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments—then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. To learn more about life settlements, visit www.LISA.org or call the LISA office at (888) 672-3917.

Thank You! On Saturday, March 9, 2019, Lakelands Concrete Products Inc., in Lima, experienced a fire that could have been extremely devastating. Fortunately, due to the quick response of the Lima Fire Department and other surrounding town fire departments, Lakelands was spared catastrophic damages. Tim VanDeVelt, the Lima Fire Chief, came upon the fire by chance, and it is because of his actions that Lakelands Concrete Products manufacturing was able to continue production with minimal down time. Lakelands cannot thank the local fire departments and ambulance organizations enough for their exceptional response and efforts containing the fire. The outpouring of support and concern from the community has been amazing! Thank you all for your assistance and encouragement during this difficult time.

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

“You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your head…but you can prevent them from nesting in your hair.” ~ Chinese adage
There is no one who hasn’t experienced misfortune… illness, the loss of a loved one, businness reverses… yet we see some people who have overcome their sorrows and others whose sorrows have overcome them. There is no way to shield ourselves from unhappiness and disappointments, life is full of them. We must try to develop the ability to accept them with a sense of proportion. So, let us not pray for uninterrupted good fortune, but rather ask for the strength to meet whatever the day brings. Some people are unaware that complete funeral arrangements, including financing, can be made well in advance of need. Our plan provides peace of mind and will spare loved ones the task of making painful decisions under stress. Ask us for details.

THE FACTS OF DEATH
36
Death is an uncomfortable subject for many people. Just as parents take the responsibility of revealing “the facts of life” to their young children, adult children find it necessary to discuss the facts of death with their aging parents. While such conversations can be difficult, children may be surprised to find how willing their aging parents are to finally discuss matters surrounding their death, funeral, and burial/ cremation. In fact, many older adults find the topic difficult to approach and are simply looking for an opportunity to do so. In some cases, parents may let it be known “that everything is taken care of,” in which case, children need only familiarize themselves with the arrangements. The subject of funerals is never easy to discuss. For the same reasons you write a will or buy life insurance, people feel that it is a good idea to prepare for the future and make their own, personal plans. At the time of an actual funeral, most decisions need to be made within a few hours. But, by preplanning the service options, you can take your time and make the decisions in an unhurried and thoughtful way. To learn more about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY.

JPMCMANUS4@GMAIL.COM EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHEN RENOVATING Dirt and noise: Homeowners can count on dust, debris and noise throughout the renovation process. Dust appears when walls come down or go up, and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place.

PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.

WAYS TO REPURPOSE DRESSERS One of the benefits to becoming a skilled do-it-yourselfer is the chance to embrace projects that can breathe new life into objects that others might designate for the trash or donation pile. Renovating such items can save money and provide an entirely different purpose for the object. After upgrading design styles or moving, there’s a good chance the average homeowner has a spare dresser or chest of drawers he or she may no longer use. Repurposing such furniture can make for an enjoyable weekend DIY project. With a change of color, removal of drawers or a few minor modifications, dressers can be transformed in many different ways. Before discarding an old dresser, think of all the ways it can be transformed into another useful piece of furniture.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
