Elegant Buffet at Leisure’s for Apple Butter Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp Servings: 10 3/4 cup Apple Butter 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika 10 pieces bacon 10 extra-large shrimp, cleaned and deveined chopped cilantro, for garnish (optional) Heat oven to 400 F. Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In medium-sized skillet over medium heat, add apple butter, maple syrup, red pepper flakes, salt and paprika. Whisk until mixture is thick and cooked down by half, about 10 minutes. Set aside. In large skillet over medium heat, add bacon slices and cook until browned but still flexible. Remove from pan and drain on paper towel-lined plate. Wrap one bacon slice around each shrimp, secure with toothpick and place onto prepared baking sheet. Once all shrimp have been wrapped, baste tops with apple butter mixture. Bake 5 minutes then flip and baste other side of shrimp. Bake another 5 minutes. Continue to flip and baste shrimp (2 minutes each time) until shrimp is fully cooked. Do not overcook as glaze can burn. Sprinkle with cilantro, if desired.

Local Educator and Advocate Dr. Ralph N. Spezio Named 2018 Graduate of Distinction VICTOR - On Thursday, May 10th at 7:15 pm at a special ceremony during the Board of Education’s regular monthly meeting, a well-respected local educator and leader in the fight against childhood lead poisoning, Dr. Ralph Spezio (VCS Class of 1965) will be recognized as Victor Central Schools’ 2018 Graduate of Distinction. The Graduates of Distinction program was initiated in 2002 as a way to recognize VCS alumni who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and made significant contributions to society. Ralph Neil Spezio, Ed.D. served for 33 years in the Rochester City School District as teacher, curriculum specialist, vice principal, and principal. As principal of Enrico Fermi School No. 17, a large urban elementary school in the heart of Rochester’s ‘poverty crescent,’ Dr. Spezio initiated wide-ranging partnerships and ground-breaking programs to improve the health and well-being of students and the entire community. For example, in partnership with St. Mary’s Hospital, he raised $1.2 million in private money, and built the only school/community medical center of its kind in New York State. Building on this success, Dr. Spezio raised another $1 million and doubled the size of the health center to include a full-service dental facility operated by Strong’s Eastman Dental Center. This health/dental center is open to the entire community with a full sliding-scale system so no one is turned away. Because there was no pre-kindergarten program at School No. 17, Dr. Spezio formed a partnership with Kodak, and using Edison Tech students, built a facility that now houses a Montessori pre-school. This program was the first in Rochester to be located in a public school and was the only public school at that time to have received accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Dr. Spezio created an authentic neighborhood/community school and with it, a vibrant Parent/Teacher PTA was formed and sustained during his tenure as principal. Dr. Spezio has received numerous awards for entrepreneurial leadership and community service, including citations from parent and community groups, professional associations, business associations, and local and state government leaders. While principal of School No.17, Dr. Spezio was a founding member of the Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning in Monroe County, New York. The work of this coalition recently earned the EPA’s Environmental Justice Achievement Award and the

Dr. Ralph N. Spezio Rochester Area Community Foundation’s AmesAmzalak Award for Nonprofit Excellence. Upon retiring as principal, Dr. Spezio served eight years as Senior Associate/Community Liaison in the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Department of Community and Preventive Medicine. In May 2011, he received his doctoral degree in educational leadership from the University of Rochester, Warner School. In 2013, Dr. Spezio was asked to come out of retirement to lead School 17 again as Principal in order to remove the State Priority School Status currently held by that school. He recently was awarded the EPA’s National Environmental Quality Award for his groundbreaking work to eliminate childhood lead poisoning. VCS alumnae and former classmate, Anita Owens-Boulger, said she nominated Dr. Spezio for this esteemed award because his life has been filled with so many extraordinary achievements. “Ralph put himself through college to reach the level of doctorate in education. He was a demonstration teacher, curriculum specialist, vice principal and principal in one of the most challenged and highest poverty-stricken schools in the City of Rochester. I have known Ralph since grade school in the Victor Schools and can say that he has been consistent in his passion to help children to achieve a healthy and successful future. He is a powerful inspiration and a credit to all the values that the Victor Central School District holds dear.” For more information, please contact the Victor Office of School and Community Relations at 9243252, ext. 1407.

INSURED • FREE QUOTES • (585) 447-3169 DID YOU KNOW? According to a survey of its users, the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor found that the average kitchen remodeling project took six weeks to complete. While some homeowners might be turned off by the prospect of having little or no access to their kitchens for more than a month, HomeAdvisor warns that the length of time it takes to complete a kitchen remodeling project depends on a host of factors, including the scope of the project. Some homeowners reported to HomeAdvisor that their projects lasted for several months, though those projects required extensive work, including moving walls and rearranging plumbing. Others who only replaced the flooring and countertops in their kitchens were back in business in just three weeks. Homeowners should always receive a projected completion date when soliciting estimates from contractors. But it’s also important that homeowners plan for unforeseen problems that may arise during the project, thereby extending the length of time necessary to complete it.

WOOD STAINING TIPS Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

Home Services DIRECTORY LAWN & LANDSCAPING CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

THE BENEFITS OF BACKYARD KOI PONDS Koi ponds can make for beautiful additions to backyards or home gardens. While many people are drawn to koi ponds because of their aesthetic appeal, there are many additional reasons for homeowners to consider installing koi ponds in their backyards. Ponds and water gardens can transform yards rather quickly. Ponds can add appeal to otherwise mundane yards and provide eye-catching, relaxing spots to sit and enjoy the scenery. Koi ponds have recently fallen into a favor with homeowners in North America, but these popular water features date back several centuries to Asia. Centuries ago, Chinese rice farmers began keeping carp in their rice paddies, and that practice eventually caught on in Japan. The fish started to breed and form slight color variations. Koi, often referred to as “Nishikigoi,” are actually descendants of the common carp, though the koi of today are more brightly hued and ornamental fish than carp. Koi can become a lowmaintenance family pet. These fish tend to grow accustomed to having people around, and will often interact with visitors at the surface of the water. It’s not unusual to have koi beg for food or take food from a person’s hand. They also may tolerate some light handling. Koi ponds also provide some psychological benefits. The sound of the water can be soothing and relaxing. Sitting by the pond may help alleviate stress, as unwinding next to a pond and watching the fish swim by can help individuals decompress.

In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day.

BEE SAFE W HILE GARDENING TO PROTECT POLLINATORS Stinging insects such as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and w asps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should alw ays be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact w ith a stinging insect, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slow ly w alk in one direction until the insect loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elcome oasis for w ild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great w ay to protect pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location w here the bees can be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as w ell as attract pests to the property.

OTHER DID YOU KNOW? If you think that the only way to exercise and burn calories involves gym equipment, think again. Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motorized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. Try to vary positions and alternate which hands you use to reduce strain and get an even workout. Fitness experts say that gardening can improve strength, increase endurance and assist with flexibility. According to a report in the UK publication The Telegraph, clearing a pond or weeding can burn some 300 calories in an hour. Forty-five minutes worth of gardening can burn as many calories as 30 minutes of aerobics.

IN THE FINAL HOURS Those of us who choose to stay by the sides of those who are dying should be alert for signs that death is approaching. In the weeks and days leading up to death, terminally ill patients are likely to sleep more, eat less, lose strength, become less social, become more confused, experience more pain, and exhibit dropping body temperature and other changes in their vital signs. During the final hours, it will become increasingly more evident that their heart rate will decrease, as their heart and other organs begin to shut down. At this time, it is important that the dying be made to feel as comfortable as possible. Conversation should be kept up until the last possible moment. It’s important to take the time to acknowledge the uniqueness of the deceased. Not just for them, but for you. It affirms the relationship and leads to healing after loss. Honoring a life is truly an act of love, for the both of you. To learn more, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL at (585) 346-5401. Our Livonia and Honeoye, NY facilities provide a spacious and comfortable atmosphere to share memories of your loved ones. CROSSWORD

“Our fathers teach us what we should become; our mothers teach us what we are…” ~ Peter Davidson

Lucky is the child who has two devoted parents. Guidance from both mother and father may be equally important, but it’s apt to come from slightly different viewpoints. It’s perhaps natural that a father wants to help us amount to something and avoid the troubles that could damage our lives. Mothers want that for us, too, but they’re more likely to be realistic. They are better at helping us to recognize our strengths and weaknesses… to understand our potential in terms of what we really are. You may call on us for advice and guidance such as you would expect from your closest friends. Our goal is to be worthy of your trust. A Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, from our staff.

Annual Drinking Water Quality Report for 2017 Village and Town of Avon Public Water Supply 74 Genesee St. Avon, N.Y. 14414 (Village of Avon Public Water Supply ID# 2501012) (Town of Avon Public Water Supply ID# 2501016) (South Avon Water District ID# 2530017) (Caledonia Water District #3 ID# 2500701) INTRODUCTION To comply with State regulations, the Village and Town of Avon water supply systems and their purchase systems listed above, will be annually issuing a report describing the quality of your drinking water. The purpose of this report is to raise your understanding of drinking water and awareness of the need to protect our drinking water sources. This report provides an overview of last year’s water quality. Included are details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to State standards. If you have any questions about this report or concerning your drinking water, please contact Kirk Vanderbilt, Lead Water Operator for the Village of Avon, at 585-226-8118. We want you to be informed about your drinking water. If you want to learn more, please attend any of our regularly scheduled village board meetings. The meetings are held the first and third Monday of each month at the Avon Village Hall. WHERE DOES OUR WATER COME FROM? In general, the sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activities. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: microbial contaminants; inorganic contaminants; pesticides and herbicides; organic chemical contaminants; and radioactive contaminants. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, the State and the EPA prescribe regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. The State Health Department’s and the FDA’s regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health. Our water source for the Village and Town of Avon and their purchase systems is Conesus Lake. The water is pumped from our pumping facility in Lakeville. The water is then filtered, chlorinated, fluoridated and corrosion control treatment is added prior to distribution. Our distribution system includes a two million gallon tank. The Town of Avon distribution system includes two water storage tanks. During 2017, our system did not experience any restriction of our water source. The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) has evaluated this Public Water System’s (PWS) susceptibility to contamination under the Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP), and their findings are summarized in the paragraph below. It is important to stress that these assessments were created using available information and only estimate the potential for source water contamination. Elevated susceptibility ratings do not mean that source water contamination has or will occur for this PWS. This PWS provides treatment and regular monitoring to ensure the water delivered to consumers meets all applicable standards. The NYSDOH has found a moderate susceptibility to contamination for Conesus Lake. The amount of row crops within the assessment area results in a medium susceptibility to pesticides. There are no noteworthy contamination threats associated with other discrete contaminant sources. While lakes are not generally considered to have a high natural sensitivity to phosphorus in SWAP, this lake already has algae problems. Therefore, additional phosphorus contribution would likely result in further water quality degradation. At the end of 2003, an Intermunicipal Agreement was signed creating the Conesus Lake Watershed Council. The Council consists of officials from all the towns within the watershed, Livingston County, and the Villages of Avon and Geneseo. The purpose of the Council is to implement the Conesus Lake Watershed Management Plan, a comprehensive plan to protect and improve the Lake. In 2004 the Council contracted a Watershed Manager to help them move forward on the 34 recommendations put forth in the Conesus Lake Watershed Management Plan (CLWMP). You may contact the Livingston County Planning Dept. at 243-7550 (or visit the Livingston County Planning Department’s website at: http://www.co.livingston.state.ny.us/index.aspx?NID=391) for additional information or to obtain copies of the Conesus Lake Watershed Characterization Report or the Watershed Management Plan. FACTS AND FIGURES The Village of Avon supplies water to approximately 1200 customers within the Village with a total population of approximately 3,000. The system also supplies water to the Town of Avon, which has approximately 653 service connections serving a population of approximately 3,000, the South Avon Water District which has 24 service connections serving approximately 60, and the Caledonia District #3 has 12 service connections serving approximately 160. The Total water produced in 2017 was 270 million gallons. The average daily production was 740,000 gallons, with a peak one-day production of 977,000 gallons, which occurred on January 17th. The amount of water that was billed to customers or otherwise accounted for was 231 million gallons. This leaves 39 million gallons (14% of the total) unaccounted for. This unaccounted water was due to flushing water mains, construction and maintenance, fighting fires, leakage, faulty meters, unmetered water, etc. Village of Avon customers were charged a $66.00 minimum for the first 800 cubic feet and $4.09 for each 100 cubic feet after the minimum. The Town of Avon water customers were charged a $50.00 minimum on the first 8,000 gallons used and $6.08 for each 1,000 gallons used after the minimum. For information regarding the South Avon Water District or the Caledonia #3 Water District, please contact the Livingston County Water and Sewer Authority at 346-3523. SECURITY In cooperation with State and Federal Agencies, the Village of Avon is making a concerted effort to insure the safety and security of our water system. We consider our water customers and neighbors to be an important part of that effort. We encourage people to take note of problems with their water and/or any suspicious activity within the water system and report those problems immediately to the appropriate authorities, i.e., 911 or the Village Office. ARE THERE CONTAMINANTS IN OUR DRINKING WATER? As the State regulations require, we routinely test your drinking water for numerous contaminants. These contaminants include: total coliform bacteria, turbidity, inorganic compounds, nitrate, lead and copper, radionuclides, volatile organic compounds, total trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, and synthetic organic compounds. The table presented depicts which compounds were detected in your drinking water. The State allows us to test for some contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these contaminants do not change frequently, therefore some data may be more than a year old. It should be noted that all drinking water, including bottled drinking water, might be reasonably expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-4264791) or the Livingston County Health Department at 585-243-7280.

1 - Turbidity is a measure of the cloudiness of the water. We test it because it is a good indicator of the effectiveness of our filtration system. Our highest single turbidity measurement (0.255NTU) for the year occurred on 07/06/17. State regulations require that turbidity must always be below 1.0 NTU. The regulations require that 95% of the turbidity samples collected have measurements below 0.3 NTU. Five distribution turbidity samples are required at five different locations each week. Turbidity values in the distribution system may not exceed 5 NTU. 2 - The level presented represents the 90th percentile of the 20 sites tested for lead and copper. A percentile is a value on a scale of 100 that indicates the percent of a distribution that is equal to or below it. The 90th percentile is equal to or greater than 90% of the copper values detected at your water system. The action level for copper was not exceeded at any of the sites tested. 3 - Similar to above, this level presented represents the 90th percentile of the 20 samples collected. The action level for lead was exceeded at one location, later to be determined to be a non-representative sample. 4 - Water containing more than 20 mg/L of sodium should not be used for drinking by people on very restricted sodium diets. 5 - This represents the highest running annual quarterly average calculated from data collected. DEFINITIONS: Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible. Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL): The highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level Goal (MRDLG): The level of a drinking water disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MRDLGs do not reflect the benefits of the use of disinfectants to control microbial contamination. Action Level (AL): The concentration of a contaminant, which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements, which a water system must follow. Treatment Technique (TT): A required process intended to reduce the level of a contaminant in drinking water. Non-Detects (ND): Laboratory analysis indicates that the constituent is not present. Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU): A measure of the clarity of water. Turbidity in excess of 5 NTU is just noticeable to the average person. Milligrams per liter (mg/l): Corresponds to one part of liquid in one million parts of liquid (parts per million - ppm). Micrograms per liter (ug/l): Corresponds to one part of liquid in one billion parts of liquid (parts per billion - ppb).

WHAT DOES THIS INFORMATION MEAN? As you can see by the table, the Village of Avon and its purchase systems had no MCL violations. We have learned through our testing that some other contaminants have been detected; however, these contaminants were detected below the level allowed by the State. You can obtain copies of the original test results by stopping at the Village Office and requesting them. ADDITIONAL SAMPLING CONDUCTED E. coli is a bacteria present in varying concentrations in many surface waters and is removed/inactivated through a combination of filtration and disinfection. From October, 2017 - October 2018, samples are required to be collected every two weeks as part of a special sampling plan. Samples are collected from pretreated (raw) water from the system’s water source. The samples are part of the Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR), whose purpose is to improve control of cryptosporidium in source water. These samples represent E. coli levels in the raw water and not water that has been filtered and treated at our water treatment plant. Results will be reported after the completion of the study in the 2018 Annual Water Quality Report. IS OUR WATER SYSTEM MEETING OTHER RULES THAT GOVERN OPERATIONS? During 2017, The Village of Avon and Livingston County were in compliance with applicable State drinking water operating, monitoring and reporting requirements. The Town of Avon received a monitoring violation for not completing a set of trihalomethane and haloacetic acid samples during the last quarter of 2017. Therefore we cannot be sure of the quality of the drinking water in the Town of Avon water system during those times with respect to trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids. The required samples have since been collected during the 1st quarter of 2018. For more information regarding the Town of Avon Public Water Supply, please contact the Town of Avon at 226-2425. DO I NEED TO TAKE SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS? Although our drinking water met or exceeded state and federal regulations, some people may be more vulnerable to disease causing microorganisms or pathogens in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice from their health care provider about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other microbial pathogens are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). INFORMATION ON FLUORIDATION Our system is one of the many drinking water systems in New York State that provides drinking water with a controlled, low level of fluoride for consumer dental health protection. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, fluoride is very effective in preventing cavities when present in drinking water at a properly controlled level. To ensure that the fluoride supplement in your water provides optimal dental protection, we monitor fluoride levels on a daily basis to make sure fluoride is maintained at a target level of 0.7 mg/l. During 2017 monitoring showed that fluoride levels in your water were within 0.1 mg/l of the target level for 99% of the time. None of the monitoring results showed fluoride at levels that approach the 2.2 mg/l MCL for fluoride. INFORMATION ON LEAD IN DRINKING WATER It is possible for water to pick up lead from home plumbing solder or fixtures if it sits in the pipes for a long time but our testing indicates this is not a problem for our customers. However, due to problems some water suppliers have had with drinking water lead levels, the USEPA is requiring all water suppliers to include the following educational text in their annual water quality reports: If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. It is possible that lead levels at your home may be higher than at other homes in the community as a result of materials used in your home’s plumbing. The Village of Avon is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead. WHY SAVE WATER AND HOW TO AVOID WASTING IT? Although our system has an adequate amount of water to meet present and future demands, there are a number of reasons why it is important to conserve water: • Saving water saves energy and some of the costs associated with both of these necessities of life; • Saving water reduces the cost of energy required to pump water and the need to construct costly new wells, pumping systems and water towers; and • Saving water lessens the strain on the water system during a dry spell or drought, helping to avoid severe water use restrictions so that essential fire fighting needs are met. You can play a role in conserving water by becoming conscious of the amount of water your household is using, and by looking for ways to use less whenever you can. It is not hard to conserve water. Conservation tips include: • Automatic dishwashers use 15 gallons for every cycle, regardless of how many dishes are loaded. So get a run for your money and load it to capacity. • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. • Check every faucet in your home for leaks. Just a slow drip can waste 15 to 20 gallons a day. Fix it up and you can save almost 6,000 gallons per year. • Check your toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank, watch for a few minutes to see if the color shows up in the bowl. It is not uncommon to lose up to 100 gallons a day from one of these otherwise invisible toilet leaks. Fix it and you save more than 30,000 gallons a year. • Use your water meter to detect hidden leaks. Simply turn off all taps and water using appliances, then check the meter after 15 minutes, if it moved, you have a leak. SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS The Village of Avon made improvements to both the Filtration Plant and the distribution system during the year. Some highlights include: • A comprehensive long-term engineering study for future improvements, investment in the water system • Continued progress in the upgrade of meter-reading technology • Comprehensive inspections of our finished water storage tanks CLOSING We at the Village of Avon are doing our very best to provide high quality water to our customers, and are happy to answer any questions. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the quality or treatment of your water, feel free to call us at 226-8118. Questions regarding the Town of Avon Water District should go to 226-2425, and Questions about the South Avon Water District or the Caledonia Water District #3 should go to 346-3523.

70th Anniversary Series- Volume 10 The Genesee Valley Penny Saver Creative Department … . . . imaginative, innovative and artistic! What would our Penny Savers be without these talented people who can take a few words scribbled on a piece of paper and turn it into a work of art suitable for printing! Our Creative Department consists of 16 talented graphic designers including our Creative Director Cristie Leone who has been with our company for 33 years, and has supervised this department for the last 12. The evolution of technology in printing is no more apparent than in our Creative Department. In 1948 composing ads was an arduous task. As mentioned in previous series, the varityper and headliner were crucial for the production of weekly ads. These gave way to the compugraphic typesetter, and in 1985, the introduction of the Macintosh computer in our Creative department was a wonder to behold. With a screen that was 9”, the Macintosh (128k) was the first relatively inexpensive computer to use a graphical user interface, and true WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) picture, all of which are taken for granted today. This computer allowed the designer to actually see their layout on the screen instead of strips of text that needed to be printed out, waxed and adhered to a layout sheet. Artwork could be scanned in and placed in the ad. This technology also hastened the departure of the dark room. Around this time, the Genesee Valley Penny Saver took an increased interest in what it takes to create effective advertising. True principles of advertising and design became a focus. A job that was once considered strictly typesetting had evolved into a graphic design position. In the past two decades we’ve embraced all things digital, from ad creation, to page creation and output, and finally to plates ready for the press. Programs that log and track ads from billing, through sales and into the creative department have made for a streamlined process. Today the Creative Department consists of talented graphic designers, paginators, and an outstanding proofing department headed up by Carole Bennett. Along with ads for our weekly Penny Saver, all work for Penny Lane Printing and Penny Lane Promotional Products flows through this department.

The recognition that we receive from the Free Community Papers of New York (FCPNY) and the Association of Free Community Papers (AFCP) each year confirms our belief that we have one of the best papers around. The award for General Excellence graces our office each and every year and is something that our Creative department strives for annually. Recently the task that the Creative Department has undertaken is the transformation of our logo and masthead and can be seen here, with a few examples of our Penny Saver, then and now.

Family owned and operated since 1948 …stay tuned for volume 11 next month

Your Tips to improve memory Forgetfulness can affect anyone. For example, few, if any, adults can say they have not experienced moments when they could not find their keys. And once the keys are found, people move on without giving much thought to why they did not immediately remember where they left their keys. Isolated incidents where people cannot recall where they placed their car keys or other minor bouts with forgetfulness do not occur by accident. In fact, the Harvard Medical School notes that they are likely byproducts of age-related changes in thinking skills. When people reach their 50s, chemical and structural changes in the brain may begin to occur, and these changes can affect a person’s ability to process memories. Father Time may be a formidable foe, but people can take steps to give their memories a boost as they get older. • Embrace recognition instead of trusting recall. fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish and little alcohol and red meat Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist who specializes in behavioral may be less likely to experience declines in their memory and neurology and neuropsychiatry at Massachusetts General thinking skills. Authored by Andrew Smyth of McMaster Hospital, notes that human beings are better at recognition than University in Ontario and the National University of Ireland in recall. That means people are more likely to remember Galway, the study following more than 27,000 people in 40 something they read, such as a note or a list, than something countries for an average of roughly five years. Breaking things down into small chunks loud because repetition increases the likelihood that the brain also can help improve memory. If tasked with remembering will record the information and be capable of retrieving it later. something extensive, such as a speech, focus on a single When studying for exams, many students repeat important sentence at a time, only moving on to the next sentence when points to themselves time and again, and that same approach you’re confident you have successfully committed the preceding can be applied by adults who are trying to improve their sentence to memory. memories. Periodic memory lapses are often nothing to worry about. But • Eat a healthy diet. A study published in 2015 in the journal men and women concerned about maintaining their memories Neurology found that people who eat healthy diets with lots of can employ various strategies to do just that.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES

Choose smart fats. All oils are loaded in calories, but healthy oils can still be used without sacrificing flavor. Olive oil is an unsaturated fat that is a much healthier choice than butter or saturated fats. When cooking with oil, do so in moderation.

Dark circles may result from pigmentation changes that occur after exposure to the sun or some other type of UV light. Individuals who apply sunscreen on their faces, including around their eyes, may be able to reduce or prevent pigment changes.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Taking advice isn’t always easy for self-assured Rams and Ewes who think they know what’s best. But it wouldn’t hurt to listen to what close colleagues have to say. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You know how to balance life’s practical aspects with the poetic. This gives you a special edge this week in both your professional endeavors and your personal life. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Focus on keeping a balance between your home-related activities and your workplace responsibilities. Be mindful of both without obsessing over one or the other. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A change in plans is likely as you discover more facts about a possible commitment. Continue to ask questions and, if you’re not sure about the answers, demand proof. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Be careful not to let that Leonine pride keep you from seeking wise, experienced counsel before making an important decision. A family member once again seeks your help. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) That surge of Virgo energy drives you to take on more work assignments. Be careful you don’t overdo it, or you might find yourself overdone: i.e., burned out. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your decision to be upfront with colleagues on a touchy matter causes some consternation at first. But in the end, your honesty wins their trust and admiration. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) As in the past, someone again wants to share a secret with you, knowing it will be safe. But do you really want to be this person’s confidante? Think about it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) As one of nature’s straight shooters, you seek to correct misconceptions about a project. Do so, of course, but without giving away too much too soon. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Creative pursuits continue to be strong in the gifted Goat’s aspect. New friendships can come from sharing these experiences with like-minded art aficionados. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Resolve lingering grumblings over your way of doing things by keeping your mind open to suggestions while continuing to show how your plans will work. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The perceptive Piscean might find that changing course in midstream isn’t as workable as it would seem. Explore this option carefully before making a decision. BORN THIS WEEK: Your willingness to share your love of life’s good things brings joy to many, including, of course, yourself. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

The much-anticipated caravan of people from Central America seeking asylum in the United States recently reached the U.S.Mexico border at San Diego only to be met by Border Patrol authorities saying that they are unable to process them due to space constraints. How do you feel about this potential influx of immigrants into the U.S.? • We are a diverse country comprised of people from many cultures and they should be welcomed as immigrants have been throughout our history. • These immigrants will create an undue burden on our economy. They should be sent back to their native country. • If they are truly in danger, they should be allowed to enter the country if standard immigration policies are followed. Poll Ends: 05/08/18

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Jerking Legs That Shake the Bed --DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband will be 82 in July. About three years ago, I became aware of his sudden movements during the night. We were renting in Florida, and the bed was smaller than our bed at home. His body would jerk, sometimes strongly. These movements would not wake him; he just seemed asleep. He does not remember anything about it in the morning. We went to see his doctor at home, who said that he is in very good shape. He did not know what caused the movements. We are once again staying in Florida, and his body movements are the same, sometimes strong enough to shake the bed. I find it hard to believe that this is normal. Do you have any advice? -- B.N.S. ANSWER: This is a classic description of a condition called periodic limb movements of sleep. These usually involve the legs, and typically involve pointing the toe while flexing the ankle, knee and sometimes the hip. Each movement lasts a few seconds and repeats every 30 seconds or so. Your story that he doesn’t remember them is very typical: It’s usually the sleeping partner who notices them. PLMS is more common in older adults. PLMS by itself is not a disease and does not need treatment; however, it is often associated with other conditions, especially restless leg syndrome (Willis-Ekbom disease), rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (which includes sometimes violent movements) and narcolepsy. Since your husband apparently has no symptoms, he does not need treatment. However, he should be specifically asked about symptoms like an urge to move the legs while awake, abnormal feelings in the legs, difficulty falling asleep and sleepiness during the day. These would be likely to indicate RLS or its close relative, periodic limb movement disorder. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What can an 80-year-old woman expect to have checked as part of an annual physical examination? -- H.M. ANSWER: The annual physical exam has gotten some bad press lately. Some of it is well-deserved: The actual physical exam occasionally finds some unsuspected problems, but this is quite uncommon and there is no proof that the annual physical saves lives. This argument misses the point, in my opinion. The “annual physical” is a scheduled time for important conversations about screening and prevention. These include checking blood pressure and considering cholesterol screening (cholesterol is a lessimportant risk factor in 80-year-old women than it is in men or in younger adults). Similarly, it’s time to come to a mutual decision on whether a mammogram should be done (again, the evidence at age 80 is unclear). Most importantly, your doctor or provider should be doing a depression screen, thinking about ways to reduce fall risk, assessing osteoporosis and giving good advice on diet and exercise. People at high risk may need other labs checked or advice given (for example, people with high blood pressure should be screened for diabetes). It’s a long list, and that’s why a dedicated visit for health promotion makes sense to me. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Commuting is a part of daily life for many working professionals. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2011 American Community Survey, the average American spends 25 minutes commuting to work each day. However, Citi’s 2015 ThankYou Premier Commuter Index says the average commute time in the United States is 45 minutes. The reasons for that disparity are unknown, though if one accepts the latter statistic as more accurate than the yearsold Census Bureau data, it’s fair to say Americans spend far more time getting to work than their neighbors to the north. But commutes in Canada also can be lengthy, as Canada’s National Household Survey found that, in 2011, commuters in Canada spent an average of roughly 25 minutes traveling to work each day. While many people enjoy their daily commutes, feeling it’s a time to prepare for the day ahead and, if using public transportation, to relax and let someone else do the work, it’s fair to say the majority of commuters would like to spend less time getting to and from work. Many would also like to spend less money getting to and from their offices, and finding ways to conserve fuel is an effective way to do just that.

Thank mom, a mother figure or wife for all that she does -- from giving you style advice to motivating you when you needed it most -- celebrate your unique bond with a gift she will celebrate for many years to come.

14HE1.EW19ORK13TATE1 1'OOD13AMARITAN1,AW The New York State 911 Good Samaritan Law allows people to call 911 without fear of arrest if they are having a drug or alcohol overdose that requires emergency medical care or if they witness someone overdosing. The following are signs of an overdose. Call 911 if the person: •␣Is passed out and cannot be woken up; •␣Is not breathing, breathing very slowly, or making gurgling sounds; •␣Has lips that are blue or grayish color.

Why should you care about the 911 Good Samaritan Law? •␣The law empowers you to save a person’s life. vThe law encourages anyone to call 911 when they see or experience a drug or alcohol overdose.

Who is protected by the 911 Good Samaritan Law? •␣Everyone - regardless of age - who seeks medical help for themselves or someone else during an overdose. •␣The person who has overdosed.

The law protects YOU from charges and prosecutions for: •␣Possessing controlled substances up to and including A2 felony offenses (anything under 8 ounces); •␣Possessing alcohol, where underage drinking is involved; •␣Possessing marijuana (any quantity); •␣Possessing drug paraphernalia; and •␣Sharing drugs␣

The law DOES NOT protect you from the following: •␣A1 felony possession of a controlled substance (8 ounces or more); •␣Sale or intent to sell controlled substances; •␣Open warrants for your arrest; and •␣Violation of probation or parole.

What if I am accused of selling drugs? •␣Calling 911 can be used in your defense when the charge is less than an A2 felony - as long as you don’t have a prior conviction for an A1, A2 or B drug felony sales or attempted sales offense. •␣Calling 911 can be a factor in reducing the length of a prison sentence for A1 and A2 felony convictions.

What if I am under the age of 21 years? Will this law protect me? Yes. Nothing should stop you from calling 911 in a life-or-death situation.

I am hoping business owners put this in their workplace and that schools discuss this with their students. You can save your friends life. Please don’t be afraid to call 911. Thank you, Amy McFadden ~ Avon, NY

… I know you believe it’s your choice that you aren’t hurting anyone but you’re wrong. Here is how your life will unfold. At first you will lie to your family. They know something has changed but they can’t figure out what it is. You will have bouts of depression and anxiety. You will start to do anything you can to get the next fix. You may start out taking money from them little by little so they won’t notice but you will soon realize that that isn’t enough money and you need more to keep you from getting sick. Maybe the drug dealer will ask you to do things. Terrible things. You will most likely get fired from your job because you will always be sick. By now your family is well aware of what is going on. Your family will be ripped apart piece by piece. They can’t grasp what went wrong and what they did to raise you to need the drugs. Maybe it started out that you were with friends and you wanted to fit in. Maybe it started because you were sad and you thought that the drug would be your savior. Your family will start lying as well to their friends and family members. Like a dirty secret. This secret will consume them. They will keep close to home. Their friends will start to stop inviting them to things because they are always telling them no. Their friends will start telling them that they have changed, that they aren’t the same person. They don’t care. The only thing that consumes them now is YOU. That is all they know now. Your parents will never be able to sleep again. They will always be worried if they are about to get “that phone call.” Can you grasp what “that phone call” is? It will be the call that will change your family forever. FOREVER! Family and friends will start to call to give their condolences. Your family will have the daunting task of planning your funeral. Picking out just the right pictures to have at the viewing. When the service ends they will have to attend an end of life celebration for you. Most likely your aunts, uncles and cousins have helped to make food for this celebration. Your parents and your siblings will be in a daze during this. After this ends they will go home to silence. SILENCE. There will be no more holiday parties they will want to attend. They will have reminders at every turn so it’s best just to avoid them all together. The light in their eyes will diminish and may never return. So….if you think that you are only hurting yourself and not anyone else, YOU ARE WRONG.

I know you believe it’s the addicts choice to buy from you and that they are only hurting themselves. You’re wrong. Here is what will happen from that packet that you are about to sell them. Their parents are probably sitting at home not worried because they taught their children to know right from wrong. They don’t realize that later they will be getting a knock on their door from the police to identify their child. NO, NOT THEIR CHILD! Their beautiful child that they taught to ride a bike and keep the helmet on so they don’t get hurt. The beautiful child that they stayed up with at night when they were sick with a fever. The beautiful child that they watched get on the bus for the first time to go to school with no fear. You won’t see the aftereffects. You won’t see their mom going into their room to sit on their bed and wonder how their beautiful child will never walk through the door again. Their beautiful child will never come and raid the refrigerator and ask you to do their laundry. You won’t see their dad hugging his wife and trying to console her knowing she is inconsolable. You believe it’s just a job. Will you care when you don’t see that addict coming to you anymore? Will you ever think of them again and hope that the reason you haven’t seen them is that they are clean or will you check to see if they have become another statistic? WILL YOU CARE AT ALL? You’re a thief. You stole their future. You stole their life. When your judgment day comes and you sit before your creator and watch the video of your life play back, you will see the damage you have caused. The families that you have ruined. You see you didn’t just ruin the addict, you ruined the whole family. Written by Amy McFadden~ Avon, NY

Just a note of appreciation to the wonderful folks who spend hours volunteering their time to take care of donations on behalf of libraries. Few understand what backbreaking work is involved and the level of expertise necessary to evaluate items properly. Some libraries use the items to supply their shelves; others hold book sales to raise money for materials and programs. Others collect for global destinations in dire need or little pop up libraries their home towns. Books are a precious commodity and we are all lucky to have devoted volunteers willing to spend their time evaluating items that still have usefulness and worth. Thanks to all the Friends of Libraries! Many small town libraries no longer accept any donations,

The weekly food giveaway in a local town is disgraceful. The director allows patrons to have one item per person (even when the organization has an overabundance of food) yet volunteers take three or four of the same item for themselves. The volunteers are downright rude to the patrons, refusing to answer when asked a question or say "You're welcome"

or host book sales due to lack of volunteers, storage space and other considerations. Here in Avon we are especially blessed to be able to continue our annual book sale tradition with the support of our local Rotary's Corn Festival. The library has first dibs on gently used, current donations. Any donated book added directly to the collection saves money, and ensures everyone gets to enjoy it. After that, The Friends of the Avon Free Library take over. We sort/ clean/store the books that come in year round. Anything that is ripped/dirty/moldy/out of date or unsaleable is recycled though our friends at the Genesee Valley Penny Saver. We work hard to maintain a zero waste philosophy. Between the sale and our outreach programs we move over

What makes you think that you are so special that you can eat for FREE? Plus, you got a free dessert because it was your birthday. You make it bad for others when prices have to soar to compensate for people such as yourself who think that they can just go into a restaurant and have someone serve them and then just waltz out of there without any regard.
