--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 71. I’m overweight at 300 pounds and have had Type 2 diabetes for 15 years. I haven’t had any chest pain or heart problems, but a recent nuclear stress test led my doctor to suspect buildup in one of my arteries, and he wants to do a cardiac catheterization. I do not want to do this, partly because I feel that once you let doctors start messing with your body, you will only experience more problems (like a stent or something) and your life will never be the same. I don’t want to offend the cardiologist, but I really do not want to do this. Am I completely wrong? -- P.R. ANSWER: Making a decision after knowing all the pertinent information isn’t wrong, even if it isn’t the decision the doctor recommends. I’d like to be sure you have all the right information. A nuclear stress test uses a radioactive dye to look at blood flow to the heart. Although they are very accurate, like almost every test, they can be mistaken. This is why your cardiologist ordered the cardiac catheterization -- the best test we have to look for blockages in the arteries. The risk in a cardiac catheterization, also called an angiogram, is low. If there are no blockages, that information is helpful and might allow your cardiologist to have you stop some medications. If you do have blockages, you have a choice of medical treatment (such as a statin, beta blocker and aspirin), catheter treatment (such as angioplasty with or without a stent) and surgical treatment. Knowing more about the location and severity of any blockage can allow you to make a more informed decision about what treatment is better. Stents and surgery would be less commonly used in someone without symptoms, unless the blockage were very severe or in a critical artery. It’s not unreasonable, given your medical history, to assume that there is a blockage that might need medical treatment. In addition to the medications I mentioned, taking excellent care of your diabetes, losing some weight, making sure your diet is proper for someone with suspected heart disease, and participating in a monitored exercise program all can reduce your risk of a heart attack. In fact, these are important even if you do get a stent or surgery. I don’t think your cardiologist will be offended if you can give him your reasons for declining an angiogram, even though he and I are recommending it in order to provide the best information to decide whether further intervention is necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Since turmeric is said to be a powerful anti-inflammatory, would it be beneficial to drink a cup of tea made with it? Especially for something like ulcerative colitis? -- J.B. ANSWER: Curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric, releases two compounds (TNF-alpha and nitric oxide) that can reduce inflammation. In ulcerative colitis, one study showed that there were fewer exacerbations in people who took curcumin along with their usual medications for U.C., compared with those taking a placebo. It holds some promise but is by no means a cure. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Seniors’ senses of smell and taste change with age Aging comes with several sensory changes, many of which people expect. Loss of hearing or diminishing vision are widely associated with aging. But one’s senses of smell and taste may diminish with aging as well. The senses of taste and smell work in concert. The sense of smell is vital to personal health, not only because inhaling pleasant aromas can provide comfort and stress relief through aromatherapy and help trigger important memories, but also because smell enables a person to detect the dangers of smoke, gas, spoiled food, and more. The National Institute on Aging says that, as a person gets older, his or her sense of smell may fade, and that will also affect taste. The Mayo Clinic says some loss of taste and smell is natural and can begin as early as age 60. Adults have about 9,000 taste buds sensing sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami flavors, or those corresponding to the flavor of glutamates. Many tastes are linked to odors that begin at the nerve endings in the lining of the nose. Medline says the number of taste buds decreases as one ages, and that remaining taste buds may begin to shrink. Sensitivity to the five tastes also begins to decline. This can make it more difficult to distinguish between flavors. Similarly, especially after age 70, smell can diminish due to a loss of nerve endings and less mucus in the nose. With the combination of the reduction of these important sensory nerves in the nose and on the tongue, loss of smell and taste can greatly affect daily life. Changes in these senses can contribute to feelings of depression, diminish one’s enjoyment of food and cause harmful conditions, such as extreme weight loss from disinterest in food to problems associated with overusing salt or sugar.
Although aging is often to blame, loss of smell and taste also may be tied to early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Cancer treatments, medications, lack of saliva, colds, flu, and other factors may contribute to sensory loss. Changing medications or treatments may help. It’s important to bring up diminished flavors or smells with a doctor to rule out something more serious and to determine what might help restore pleasure from smells and flavors. An otolaryngologist, or a doctor who specializes in diseases of the ears, nose and throat, may be able to help fix the problem, though some people may be referred to a neurologist or another specialist. Continuing to use one’s sense of smell and taste by cooking, gardening, trying new flavors, and experimenting with different aromas may help slow down the decline these senses. Although age-related loss of taste and smell cannot be reversed, some such cases may be treatable.

STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER Take frequent breaks indoors or in shady areas. Limit marathon gardening sessions to spring and fall when the weather permits. When gardening in harsh summertime heat, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises gardeners to take frequent breaks. Head inside to air conditioned rooms, if necessary, or find shady areas to sit, relax and drink some water. Sitting in the shade will give the body’s thermostat a chance to recover from exposure to extreme heat.

WATERING 101: HELP YOUR LAWN THRIVE THROUGH THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER Strategically locate sprinklers. Sprinklers should be located so no water is ending up on the driveway or sidewalks around your property. Watering the concrete or asphalt is wasteful, and that’s water that could be going toward your plants. When watering by hand, be sure all of the water is finding its way to plants and not on any walkways.

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Use a travel agent. Using a travel agent to plan your vacation can remove any stress and anxiety you may feel when planning a trip and juggling the responsibilities of everyday life. Many people choose to book their own trips as a cost-cutting measure. What they don’t realize is that travel agents may be privy to special deals and perks they can pass on to customers. These agents also know the ins and outs of certain resorts and locales. Leaving the legwork in their accomplished hands means all you have to do is show up with your reservations instead of pouring over the minutiae of planning.

We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
CAN WE CHOOSE A TIME TO DIE? Many wonder whether a person could either consciously or subconsciously choose a particular time to die. According to anecdotal reports, some individuals have declared they only intended to live long enough to be alive for a certain event (such as the marriage of a child) before dying, and they did just that. One documented case in a respected medical journal told of a 40-yearold woman with chest pains, who told her nurses and clergyman that she intended to die exactly one week later, on the second anniversary of her mother’s death. She did. And one study showed that elderly Chinese-American women postpone death until after the Harvest Moon Festival. Perhaps we have more control over our deaths than we might think. Honoring the life of your loved one means you value the relationship you shared. We look forward to helping you decide how to celebrate that bond, and honor the unique person you’ve lost. To learn more about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Our Livonia and Honeoye, NY, facilities provide a spacious and comfortable atmosphere to share memories of your loved ones. QUOTE: “Life is a journey from cradle to coffin.” Shakespeare

Gibney Monument Works, Inc. Rector-Hicks 135 N. Center St., Perry, NY 14530 Funeral Home 585-237-2750 Scott Hicks ~ 243-0995 UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.
“We do not free ourselves from something by avoiding it, but only by living through it....” ~ Cesare Pavese
Life for each of us is certain to consist of both pleasant and unpleasant things. We wish we were free of all the unpleasantness which could be anything from an unfortunate physical characteristic to our economic circumstances or other attribute over which we have no control. We could go through life in bondage to this situation, avoiding it as much as possible. Or, we can free ourselves by facing up to the facts and recognizing that we must simply live through it.... and then refuse to worry about it! By making all their own funeral arrangements themselves, well in advance of need, many people achieve peace of mind. There are other advantages, too. Ask our staff to explain... no obligation.

Backyard Maintenance Tips For Summer (NAPS)—Summer is here and it’s time for backyard barbecues! Before your guests arrive, check these four backyard maintenance tasks off your to-do list to ensure your yard is looking good. Clean Your Barbecue To prevent food from sticking to your barbecue grills, rub cooking oil on the grates before you start. After you’re done barbecuing, use warm, soapy water to clean the grates with a wire brush. Give Outdoor Furniture a Pick-Me-Up With all furniture, check for wear and tear that may have occurred during winter. Clean plastic furniture and chair or couch cushions simply with a cloth or soft scrub brush dipped in a mix of water and dish detergent. Some outdoor cushions can be thrown in the washer so check the tags. Check Power Equipment Since power equipment most likely hasn’t been used in months, turn it on to make sure it’s working properly. Some equipment may need to be lubricated to run smoothly again. Easily lubricate the moving parts of a lawn mower with WD-40 EZ-REACHTM. It has an 8-inch, flexible straw that bends and keeps its shape to get WD-40® Multi-Use Product into hard-to-reach places, like in and around the blade. Tidy Up Your Lawn Trim large plants, hedges and bushes that had a growth spurt during the spring, and remove dead limbs from trees. Remove leaves and other debris from the gutters around your home, and remove weeds from the lawn and garden. You may need to reseed some areas of your lawn as well. With the completion of these four tasks, guests will be enjoying your backyard barbecues all summer long. To see how WD-40 EZ-REACH can help you tackle other outdoor maintenance projects, visit WD40.com.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You need to pay close attention to the details before making a commitment. Don’t accept anything that seems questionable, unless you get an answer that can be backed up. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Congratulations on getting that project up and running. But as exciting as it is, don’t let it carry you away. Make sure you set aside time to spend with family and friends. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Be sure you are part of the discussion involving your suggestions. Your presence ensures that you can defend your work, if necessary. It also helps gain your colleagues’ support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding needs to be dealt with, or it can grow and cause more problems later on. Be the bigger person and take the first step to clear the air. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Set some strict guidelines for yourself so your heavier-than-usual work schedule doesn’t overwhelm the time you need to spend relaxing with loved ones. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might feel a little uncomfortable being among people you hardly know. But remember that today’s strangers can become tomorrow’s valuable contacts. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Reward yourself for all that you’ve accomplished despite some annoying situations that got in your way. Enjoy a well-earned getaway with someone special. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Realizing that someone else is taking credit for what you did is bound to get anyone’s goat, but especially yours. Be patient. The truth soon comes out. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Forget about opposites attracting. What you need is to find someone who thinks like you and will support your ideas, even if others say they’re too radical. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Workplace problems can affect your financial plans. Be prudent and avoid running up bills or making commitments until things begin to ease up by the 27th. BORN THIS WEEK: Your intuition helps you communicate easily with people and understand their needs. (c) 2018 King Features Syndicate

A shout out to Edgar at Cameron Community Ministries!! This organization is an urban outreach community center in the Lyell-Otis Neighborhood of Rochester, NY where 98% of residents in the neighborhood live in poverty. My husband and I had bicycles that we no longer rode and wanted to donate. We contacted Edgar who indicated that he knew of people who could use them. We set up a drop off time and were met by two guys who unloaded them from our vehicle. Within an hour after we dropped them off Edgar sent us an email indicating that the bicycles had already been spoken for. We appreciate Edgar’s willingness to help us give our
Mind your language!! I recently attended a local festival at a park. I'll get straight to the point. There were about 20+ teens playing basketball on a court at the park, and they were swearing like sailors! Using every cuss word available! From the F word to the N word. Let me remind you that there were families at the park that day, with 4 and 7 yr olds! Can we please mind our
bicycles directly to individuals who needed them. Thank you to the staff at Genesee Valley Penny Saver! You folks are wonderful! Love my Penny Saver! Thank you to Jim and Julie for letting us use your pool. You guys are wonderful neighbors and we’re so lucky to have you - year ‘round! The B Family Thank you to Maria’s Sunshine and Dreams Fund, your organization is a beautiful representation of everything Maria was passionate about in
language out in public?? Not only do the words imprint in little ones’ minds, it also makes a very bad first impression for you. It makes you look like disrespectful, immature teens. What happened to teaching your kids manners?? Hey....landlords who own property on 'the hill'...your rentals need TLC! PLEASE take the time to clean and spruce them up! They could definitely use some paint and the windows and porches are in desperate need of repair. Take some pride in the way they look. You reside at an upscale apartment complex, but apparently lack the common sense & decency, or of just being a good neighbor when you walk your dog to do his business, and then after bagging it, instead of taking it with you, you walk over to a nearby restaurant, and toss it
life. The foundation has truly blessed us and our family beyond what we could have imagined. We are grateful for the many people involved in the foundation who selflessly give their time and energy to help kids and their families who have fallen into times of unexpected medical struggles. A Sunshine Recipient Thank you to Miguel at the Hook and Spoon for his exceptional customer service. He ran out to the docks to help us safely dock our boat, then went out of his way to serve this pregnant lady a delicious frozen

We have notified management, and they are now aware of your little scheme. You should be ashamed. Response to vent about married women's last name. Why is it anyone else's business what last name a married woman chooses? I never changed my name when I married 35 years ago, and neither did my husband. Women are not men's property. Marriage is a partnership of equals. Believe me, you can file your income tax jointly using both names, and sometimes the woman is the primary wage earner too! Live and let live. I just moved here & can't believe [local] Street. I can count at least 30 vehicles per hour racing past without a muffler! We
mocktail - what a treat! Thank you for your genuine kindness. K&G I don't know whether it was town, county or state highway departments, but thanks to whichever fixed the intersection of Asbury Rd. & Rt. 20 East of LeRoy!
can't hear ourselves talk inside our own house. I do hope the police start doing something about this, IT IS PART OF EVERYONE'S INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS. Then there are 30 to 50 vehicles every 15 minutes that don't stop at [local] St. I even called the gas company about one of their trucks going right through, only because there was a school bus that had the rightof-way but luckily stopped & waited. If police would just monitor that intersection, [town] could be RICH...! Response to vent about riding with your kids on tractors. It is none of your business if I want to take a child on the tractor, I will. If you feel that you are not steady enough to do so, then don't. Don't spy on people just to make sure they are up to your standards. We just had a fence put up to protect ourselves from people like you. Have a nice day!!!!!!!
