In addition, injuries and deaths from fireworks increased by 50 percent between 2019 and 2020. Forty-four percent of those injuries were burns, 30 percent involved the hands and fingers and 22 percent affected the head, face and ears. USCPSC data also indicated that 15 percent of injuries affected the eyes.The majority of injuries (66 percent) occurred around the July 4th holiday, but it’s important that individuals exercise caution whenever they celebrate with fireworks.And those precautionary measures should remain in place when using sparklers, which the USCPSC indicates caused 900 injuries in 2020.

Medicines Usually Maintain Efficacy Past Their Expiration Dates
DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently tested positive for COVID using an expired home test, and I selfisolated for five days. I also realized every Tylenol, antihistamine, DayQuil, NyQuil and allergy pill that I had was past its expiration date. Some were only expired by a few months, but most were expired by two to four years. I guess I don’t get sick often. My question is: Before I dispose of these, how effective are they, and are any of them dangerous to use? -- K.L.
ANSWER: Drug manufacturers are required to make expiration dates, and they guarantee that the drugs are what they say they are and are effective until a certain date (at least if they are properly stored in a cool and dark area). This does not necessarily mean that they become ineffective or dangerous after expiring, and many drugs have been proven to maintain efficacy for years or decades after the printed expiration date.
A military study found that 90% of drugs are still effective 15 years after expiration. It is rare for a drug to become dangerous; however, the tetracycline class of antibiotics is one where toxicity has been found. In general, if a drug is a few months to a year past its expiration date, it is probably OK. (Liquid drugs, nitroglycerin and insulin are notable exceptions.)
But at some point, you have to ask yourself whether it is worth the small risk of the medicine being less effective, especially for inexpensive over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.

A couple of motorcyclers went out of their way to make a man, who was sitting alone, comfortable and happy by simply insisting on sitting with him to have conversation and a meal together. (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes.
Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.
While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating,the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material.This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim.
Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust.
In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials.

Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation
One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.
Hot weather tips to keep your pets safe
• Don’t leave your pet in a hot vehicle, even for a few minutes. e inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees even with the windows cracked open.
• Keep all unscreened windows or doors closed so pets don’t fall out of them.
• Trim longer hair, but never shave your dog.
• Brush cats more o en than usual to help prevent problems caused by excessive heat.
• Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool. Don’t let your pets drink from the pool, ocean or lake.
• Introduce your pets to water gradually and make sure they wear flotation devices when on boats.
• Rinse your dog off a er swimming to remove chlorine or salt from their fur.
• Avoid hot surfaces, such as asphalt, that can burn your pet’s paws.
• Don’t walk, run or hike with a dog during the hottest parts of the day or on particularly warm days.
• Make sure your garden plants are safe for pets.

Nestled in Bloomfield, the AWA Communication Technologies Museum (formerly the Antique Wireless Museum) stands as a beacon of communication history, preserving the legacy of innovators and their groundbreaking devices. President and Chair of the Board of the Antique Wireless Association is Robert (Bob) Hobday, a man whose passion for amateur radio and historical preservation has driven him to dedicate countless hours to the museum and its mission.
Hobday has been a pivotal figure in the world of amateur radio and communication history for decades. His journey with the Antique Wireless Association (AWA) began in 1984 when he became a member and served as a Museum Historian and Museum Staff volunteer. His involvement deepened in 2007 upon retiring from a distinguished career at Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E), where he served in various roles, including Pricing Manager and Marketing Manager. His expertise and leadership skills were further honed as Managing Director at Energetix, a subsidiary of RG&E/Energy East.
Hobday’s fascination with communication technology isn’t merely a professional interest; it’s a lifelong passion. His amateur radio call sign, N2EVG, is well-known in the amateur radio community. Bob is a member of the Radio Club of America, ARRL, a life member and past President of the Rochester Amateur Radio Association, and a Fellow in the Antique Wireless Association. His accolades include the AWA Director’s Award, Museum Award, and the prestigious Jack Poppele and Ralph Batcher Awards from the Radio Club of America.
In 2009, Bob joined the AWA Board of Trustees, quickly rising to the position of Deputy Director, now known as Vice President. By 2018, he was elected Director and, in 2021, became President and Chair of the Board. Under his leadership, the museum has flourished, cementing its reputation as a premier steward of electrical communication history.
Bob’s vision for the museum is clear and unwavering: “Our job at the Museum is to be a great steward of communications history. at thought inspires me every day.” is dedication is reflected in the museum’s mission to educate the public and preserve the stories and innovations that have shaped modern communication.
Bob emphasizes the importance of community involvement in the museum’s continued success. One of the museum’s most significant recent achievements is the introduction of STEM classes for students aged 8 to 16. Since 2017, over 90 students have participated in these classes, gaining hands-on experience and knowledge about the evolution of communication technology. Bob finds inspiration in these young minds: “ e kids inspire me when they take our STEM classes or just visit.”
e museum’s goals are ambitious but achievable, thanks to the unwavering support of its volunteers and members. With 1,500 members worldwide, including individuals from all 50 states and 16 countries, the AWA community is robust and dedicated. On any given Tuesday, 40 to 50 volunteers gather at the Bloomfield museum, contributing their time and expertise. “We have a great time together. ey are my inspiration and have created wonderful memories,” Bob says.
Rebranded in June 2024 as the AWA Communication Technologies Museum to better reflect and honor its roots while preserving the legacy of wireless communication pioneers, this museum is a treasure trove of firsts in history and one-of-a-kind artifacts spanning over two hundred years. From early telegraph machines to modern-day communication devices, the museum offers a comprehensive look at how technology has evolved and shaped our world. Bob is keen to share this valuable resource with the community, encouraging everyone to visit and discover the rich history housed within its walls.
While the museum’s virtual tour offers a glimpse into its vast collection, Bob takes pride in providing personal tours, sharing his deep knowledge and passion for the artifacts. His favorite memories are intertwined with the volunteers and visitors who bring the museum to life each day.

Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation.
Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.
FINDING WORK AFTER 50
Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work.
Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent.
Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updatedtheirrésuméstoreflecttheirmostrecentprofessionalexperience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories.
Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather.
Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity.
Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates.
Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce.
