(NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes with the chance of severe weather and an increase in fire risks. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season.
HOMETOWN
“Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.” Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks: • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Test monthly to ensure they work.
President

• Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month.
Vice President

• Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them.

• Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and living room, and make sure all household members know how to use them.

• Keep portable generators outside and away from the home.

• Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home.

• Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned every year.

• Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, or other heat source. • Never leave lit candles unattended, and keep them out of the reach of children and pets. • If using a live Christmas tree, keep it adequately watered and get rid of it after Christmas or when it gets dry. Residents can also take an active role in protecting their communities from hazards such as fires, medical emergencies, and much more. Fire departments across the country are looking for volunteers to serve as firefighters, EMS providers, and auxiliary members.

We were blessed with such a sweet, loyal pup when we added
Harper Mae to our family almost four years ago. She adores our children and has proven to be quite the protector of our home. Walks and fetch are her main hobbies, but she does occasionally enjoy jumping in the swamp of the canal or chasing the family chickens against Mom’s wishes. Thanks for letting us love on you Harper!
MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Many people feel the dawn of a new year provides an opportunity to clean the slate and begin anew. That notion can be applied in various ways, including around the house. Cleaning the slate at home may involve reducing clutter around the house. Clutter can gradually overtake a home’s interior, turning a once pristine home into one overwhelmed with nonessential items. As intimidating as clutter can seem, discarding it is easier than it may appear.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

The dawn of a new year represents a chance to start anew and set goals for the months ahead. New Year’s resolutions are often made to provide the motivation people need to improve their lives and make a new year as productive and happy as possible. While people who make New Year’s resolutions fully intend to realize those goals, few actually stick to the game plan. According to researchers at the University of Scranton, just 8 percent of people who make their New Year’s resolutions actually achieve those resolutions. While that might make it seem like the odds are against men and women who have resolved to improve their lives in the year ahead, adults can realize their goals for the new year and beyond.

S T N RA S E V RA Thank you, emergency responders! Hidden Meadows in Bergen, NY, is a quiet retirement community. Most of the residents are retired, so the pace of life is gentle, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. This peace was shattered on Thursday, 12/30/21 just before 8:00 p.m. when a house exploded into flames. Neighbors, with the help of firemen, forced the door open, pulled the owner of the home out, and put her on oxygen. Almost certainly, they saved her life. The residents of Hidden Meadows Senior Community want to say, “Thank you!” to the Firefighters, EMTs and other related Emergency Response personnel. We are proud of your work and grateful for your service. May God bless you and watch over you! Wonderful neighbors! I am very blessed to live next door to the Hensler family. Words cannot adequately express how much their acts of kindness mean to me. Thank you. - JMH Rescued I have to thank a special person who took the time to help my runaway pup. This was in the afternoon on 1/10/22. My pup had got out of her collar and ran to a busy complex road. By the time I got back to the road, this person had my pup in her vehicle and then handed her to me. My thanks also to those who took the time to stop their vehicles and were patient. My pup survived the ordeal without harm. She means the world to me. I can’t express my gratitude enough for the helpfulness. God Bless!

No Jingle Bells? It seems like every day an old tradition or piece of history gets trashed or destroyed in our country by some so-called, well-meaning group. [Local school] recently banned playing or singing Jingle Bells. What's next, telling the students there's no Santa Claus or Easter Bunny? I think they should have to specify their reasons to the taxpayers of their school district. Side street speeding I live on the east side of [local town], and I can't believe how many people fly down my street. A lot of the streets don't have sidewalks, so I keep my dog on the grass, but sometimes I'm scared for myself because when there's a car coming from each direction, neither one will slow down. These are residential areas, not the expressway. Reasonable tree prices To the person complaining about Christmas tree prices: it is the one time of year that those families make the bulk of their income (especially local). It costs money, time, and energy to grow those trees and keep them healthy for you and your families to enjoy. If your tree cost you $54, that means it cost $4.50 a month. Then you have to count all those years they kept that tree. It really isn’t that expensive. They are farmers! They have to raise prices just as everyone else in the economy has. They need to make a living, too. Honestly, if you’re not happy about it, be a Scrooge and don’t get a tree at all.
Animal cruelty I have been made aware of a very sad, and possibly cruel, situation. On a local country road, there are three horses standing in a small corral that is all mud. They are very close to the road, and although I saw some hay spread on top of the mud, the horses look scrawny and sick. They look like they huddle together for warmth. I saw no shelter they could go into in this bitter weather. My question is this: why do people keep pets if they don’t take care of them? I worry for them on these frigid days and nights, but apparently there are no laws preventing this type of abuse.

Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Is Telehealth All It’s Cracked Up to Be
Medicare started paying for telehealth medical visits last year and will continue through the end of 2023. With telehealth, we sit in our homes and talk to our doctor on a screen, and Medicare pays for it. In the beginning, the number of telehealth visits skyrocketed -- and then fell dramatically. Is that because we learned the hard way just what the limitations of telehealth really are? There are people on both sides of the “should seniors use telehealth” debate. They both say they offer solid evidence for their opinion. Those who claim it’s a great thing for us to consult with our doctors via a little screen say it’s helpful because it keeps us out of the doctor’s office. We don’t have to go in among all the germs, and we don’t need to worry about transportation. On the other hand, those who are against telehealth appointments for seniors argue that many of us can’t even afford the very devices we would need for telehealth. Even if we have a cellphone, the screen is so small as to be worthless, especially if we have a vision or hearing problem. Then there are the plan fees needed for that device. And what of privacy when we need someone at hand to help navigate the software for us? Do we really want our grandchildren sitting there when we discuss a personal issue with our doctor? Even if we have a computer, one with a large monitor, how is that going to work when we need the doctor to look at a rash on our back? Or if we really ought to have a stethoscope pressed to our chest because of that ragged cough we’ve had for days? Note: If you have original Medicare, you’ll pay the same amount for the telehealth appointment as you would if you got the services in person. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

By Lucie Winborne * A high-school principal once disciplined a student by making him sit in the basement while reading the U.S. Constitution. The punishment must have taken effect, because said student (who also memorized parts of the document) was Thurgood Marshall, who grew up to become the first Black Supreme Court justice.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Freshen stuffed animals by securing a few in a pillowcase and adding a fabric softener sheet. Put in the dryer on low heat for 20 minutes, then remove and brush out the fur, if necessary, while still warm. * “Keep a quart container in the freezer and whenever you have a small amount of leftovers, chop them up and add it to your container. When it’s full, thaw it. Add some of your favorite soup beans, pizza sauce, milk and cheese, and you have a unique and delicious soup.” -- M. from Pennsylvania * If you’ve been decluttering as a part of your New Year’s resolutions, and you came across old pairs of eyeglasses, know that you can donate them to any Lion’s Club in your area. They redistribute the glasses to those who cannot afford them. You don’t have to know the prescription, and they take reading glasses, too! * How can you keep snow and ice off your windshield? Some say a solution of three parts vinegar to one-part water sprayed on the windshield each night can cut your ice-scraping time in half or better. (Use caution to avoid your paint job.) Also, try covering your wipers with an old pair of long socks so they don’t freeze to the glass! * “For pastry cooking, try grating frozen butter into the flour. It cuts in better and will stay cool longer. This helps when I’m making shortbread, as the flour and butter need to be combined. I don’t end up having to put it in the fridge to cool it back down.” -- C.S. in South Carolina

CCE-MONROE RECEIVES FUNDING FOR WORKSHOPS
Promote the Use of Battery-Powered Landscape Tools by Marci Muller
C
CE-Monroe has received funding through the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute to offer a series of workshops promoting the advantages of using battery-powered landscape tools in place of traditional gas-powered equipment.
Local suppliers of battery-powered tools will be invited to each workshop to share with attendees the tool lines that they sell and any sales-incentives they might have to offer. For information on the upcoming workshops, please contact Marci Muller, 585-753-2557 or mem545@cornell.edu
The goal of our project is to have a positive impact on the purchasing decisions made by property managers, landscape companies and the general public in regard to landscape equipment. Through educational workshops and literature distribution we will share information and personal testimonies to encourage purchasers to replace old landscape tools with battery-powered ones. The long-range impact from the success of these efforts will be cleaner air and less noise for the people using the equipment and the people who live and/or work in areas where landscape maintenance is being done. Gas-powered tools spew Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides and particulate matter, polluting the air and endangering the individuals who operate the equipment. In addition, the noise pollution from gas-powered tools exceeds the limits issued by OSHA by a substantial increase. CCE-Monroe will provide six workshops between April and November 2022 to share information with individuals who make purchasing decisions for their landscape/ property maintenance business. We will also create flyers with similar information that can be distributed to the general public through City of Rochester Recreation Centers, Monroe County Parks and local garden centers. CCE-Monroe will create a video highlighting Cornell University Grounds Department, which has been transitioning to battery-powered equipment over the past several years. The video will be featured at the six workshops, along with other research that supports the environmentalfriendly nature of battery-powered tools and their ability to perform as well as gas-powered equipment.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Spleen Screens Bacteria and Spent Blood Cells From Body
Explore poaching, broiling and grilling. Poaching, broiling and grilling are three healthy alternatives to frying. Broiling and grilling expose food to direct heat, so it is a fast method of cooking and may not be appropriate for foods that require longer cooking times to tenderize. Poaching is the process of simmering foods in water or another flavorful liquid.

Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I had an abdominal X-ray to check on my gallstones, and was surprised to find an enlarged spleen. I was told it might be leukemia or lymphoma! I was sent to an oncologist, who reassured me that I did not have cancer and recommended I get checked again in six months. My doctor checked it after three, and my spleen had gone back down! What is all this with the spleen? People have it removed after injuries, like accidents. It seems to be insignificant, but can it be an omen for cancer? -- M.K. ANSWER: The spleen is an underappreciated abdominal organ. Its major job is to filter and remove old or damaged red blood cells, but it also removes bacteria. In addition, the spleen acts as a very large lymph node, allowing infection-fighting white blood cells to gather and activate. Removal of the spleen leaves people at a higher risk of some kinds of bacterial infections. Enlargement of the spleen has many potential causes. Both liver and heart disease can cause passive congestion of the spleen with blood. Cancer, especially lymphoma, is a common cause, but infection is one cause to consider in a person in whom the spleen enlarges and then returns to normal. There are many less-common causes as well. If the spleen is removed or is nonfunctional (this is almost universal in adults with sickle cell disease, for example), then infections are common, and vaccinations have a different and more intensive schedule, ideally given when the spleen is still in place and working. It is probably worth it for your doctor to continue to keep an eye on. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

NEW TRANSPLANTS ARE CHANGING LIVES (NAPSI)—Organ transplants have been saving lives for many years. You may even know someone who has received a kidney or a heart transplant, and what a difference that gift of life has made. Another type of transplant has been changing lives in incredible new ways—the transplantation of hands and faces. More than 100 people worldwide have received these types of transplants: a veteran who lost his limbs in war, a woman whose face was devastated in an attack, a child who lost his hands to severe infection. All have had their lives transformed. These procedures are called “Vascularized Composite Allograft” organ transplants, or VCA transplants. They are composed of multiple types of tissue. With a hand transplant, for example, bones, blood vessels, nerves and skin must all be attached to the remaining arm. So many tissues, however, make VCA transplants extremely complex. The surgery requires the involvement of dozens of surgeons and other medical professionals and can take 16 hours or more. Recovery is also demanding for patients; rehabilitation can be a full-time job for one to two years. Yet, the results are life changing. VCA transplants can restore abilities and independence in ways that artificial limbs and reconstructive surgery cannot. Just consider the difference a working hand with moving fingers and a sense of touch could make. It can mean the ability to take care of oneself, work, drive and play. Face transplants enable recipients to rejoin society, often ending isolation and depression. VCA and traditional organ transplants are the same in some respects. Criteria for matching donors and recipients include the need for compatible blood and tissue types. However, VCA requires matching for additional features such as skin tone, body size and hair color. Gender may also be taken into consideration. A commonly asked question about face transplants is whether the recipient will look like the donor. The answer is yes and no. Yes, skin characteristics such as moles, freckles and scars will transfer to the recipient. However, because the recipient’s underlying bone structure is apt to be different from the donor’s, resemblance will likely be minimal. Like with kidneys, livers and other organs, there is a national waiting list for VCA transplants that matches donors with potential recipients. However, enrolling as an organ donor on a state or national registry does not mean you’re authorizing VCA donation. Your family would make the decision about VCA donation after your death. You can learn more at www.organdonor.gov, a website of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. Page 19

Off-Leash Dogs Bane of His Walks in Woods
CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Hatch” and I frequently walk the trails of a state park near my house. A leash is required in the park, but many dog owners ignore this rule and allow their dogs to bound ahead. Not all of these dogs are well-socialized, and we’ve faced aggressive, unleashed dogs on the trails. I carry a walking stick in case I need to fend off an attacking dog -- something that hasn’t happened yet, though it’s come close once or twice. Please help me make other dog owners aware that off-leash dogs can make other dogs, and humans, quite nervous. Keeping dogs on leash will help avoid a confrontation, fight or injury. -- Doug S., Stoneham, Massachusetts DEAR DOUG: You’re absolutely right! Dog owners, always review the rules regarding pets on park lands. Even though forested trails seem remote and safer for dogs to run free without a leash, you never know if another dog is just around the bend. Further, even a leashed dog needs to follow basic commands like sit, stay and heel, and to come back immediately when called if the leash is accidentally dropped. Rules are typically posted at trailheads, as well as on park websites. There’s no reason to not be familiar with leash rules before going for a hike. If you encounter an off-leash dog while on a trail, remain calm. Shorten your dog’s leash so that he walks next to you. Stay calm and relaxed with the owner when they finally appear, too. Ask if they’re aware that there’s a leash rule on the trail, but don’t start a confrontation. The more awareness you can build of your park’s rules, the fewer offleash meetings you’ll face. Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry. EMPLOYMENT
