REVIEWS HAVE ON BUSINESSES.

Search Engine Land, which covers digital advertising technology, reports 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. Unfortunately for businesses, Inc. magazine and entrepreneur Andrew Thomas found that a customer who has a negative business experience is highly likely to share that experience by leaving a bad review. On the other hand, someone who has had a positive experience is unlikely to leave a good review. Roughly 10 percent of happy customers say they were pleased by a product or service. Furthermore, Thomas indicates it takes roughly 40 positive customer experiences to undo the damage from a single negative review.

Customer happiness should be the goal of businesses, with the added benefit of helping to generate more positive reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. While that is happening, customers can think twice about online reviews.

Speak to product quality, especially when you have a very good experience with an item. Many retailers request feedback via email. Take advantage of this opportunity to offer positive feedback. Companies gather personal information from customers so they can follow up in many cases. Great customer service helps prevent bad reviews and defines companies’ brands. If you are asked for a phone number or email address, provide it. Doing so helps companies improve their products or services. Happy customers can reach out to friends and family members to share their experiences with certain companies. Posting your own review on social media also can drum up business for a company you respect. Customers should weigh their words heavily and think before posting a review. The marketing and consulting resource The Chat Shop says 31 percent of customers are interested in grocery store reviews, 60 percent are likely to read restaurant reviews and 70 percent rely on technology product reviews. Make an effort to discuss issues with a company before leaving a negative review. You may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There’s no need to hesitate when leaving positive reviews. Simply explain why you were pleased. Reviews can make or break a company. Both business owners and customers have a role to play in making online reviews a valuable way to learn about a company.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Penny Saver
Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Color Penfield Green: Leading the Way with Climate Conscious Initiatives BY AMANDA DUDEK
A
s 2022 begins, the environment and climate change continue to concern many. At least 15 of New York State’s Finger Lakes Region communities have partnered with an organization called the Climate Solutions Accelerator to begin taking action. Penfield is one such community, thanks in part to resident organization, Color Penfield Green. Color Penfield Green (CPG) is part of the greater Color your Community Green movement and the Climate Solutions Accelerator (CSA). CPG is a grassroots effort dedicated to educating individuals and working to move town officials to make environmentally friendly changes. “Color Brighton Green inspired us with the whole idea of a community group,” said CPG leader, Katie Rygg. “We are all volunteers and include a junior effort called Color your School Green.” Rygg acts as the liaison between the adult CPG and the student CSG. A prime example of one of CPG’s successes are Penfield’s Community Choice Aggregation. “This is my passion project, started by my fellow CPG volunteer, Al Hibner, before CPG started,” shared Rygg. “About three years ago, he formed a residents committee to see if we could implement a Community Choice Aggregation (CCA). Now, we are implementing Penfield’s new program with more eco-friendly options, including 50% and 100% renewable electricity.” Rygg also credits Penfield residents for lobbying the Town Board to make these “green” options a reality and praised the Town Board for offering these options. Color Penfield Green has seen other successes, as well. It’s clean energy classes have been gaining momentum. “45 people took our NYS Clean Energy Communities: Community Campaign for Electric Vehicles course with us through the Penfield Recreation Department,” stated Rygg. CPG plans to offer this course again and will be partnering with Heat Smart Monroe to offer a second class under the Climate Solutions Accelerator umbrella in the spring. “It is Penfield residents teaching Penfield residents,” explained Hibner. “If 10 people purchase or lease electric vehicles, our town would receive $5,000 for sustainability projects. We are also starting a process for clean heating and cooling. We can earn up to $10,000 for these two campaigns. Why not use renewable energy?”
Joe Gersitz and Katie Rygg (l-r) tabling at the Greater Rochester Clean Cities EV Car Show!
Yet, even with these “green” victories, there is much work to do. “I have two small children, and I would love to see them riding electric school buses,” said Rygg. “I know this is the direction we are going.” She explained that current diesel buses only get about 4-10 miles to the gallon of fuel. “Electric school buses are coming,” Rygg continued. “The community support is there, and we can make things happen. We have already presented on this to parent organizations and our town, and there has been a lot of positive response there. We are hoping Penfield’s new busing
●
facility can be ready to roll with electric school busses.” CPG’s outlook is hopeful as the town considers the feasibility of such an undertaking. “We realize there is more to do; that we have to stand up with Color Penfield Green and do more,” said Hibner. “These local groups are a sweet spot for creating change. State and national changes are good, but they can be challenging. When working with local municipalities, you can organize quickly in your home community and meet with your officials quickly. It just flows naturally. These are your friends and neighbors with whom you are working and whom you are helping. We can help others find likeminded people in their communities, or, if there is not a group already, we can help them start one.” Hibner and Rygg both added that they appreciate Penfield’s historic support. “Penfield built a 5-acre solar farm to supply up to 80% of the energy needed to power their government buildings,” they said. “We want to compliment them and to support them in doing even more.”
We realize there is more to do… that we have to stand up with Color Penfield Green and do more.
Interested in learning more? Check out Color Penfield Green’s blog. You’ll find information on everything from electric cars to renewable energy. Visit the Finger Lakes Region’s Color your Community Green website at climatefl. org/color-your-community-green.
Another CPG campaign that has been wildly successful is its Healthy Yards initiative through Healthy Yards Monroe County. “We met with the Penfield Parks Department,” said Rygg. “We want to make sure our parks have more native pollinator plants, use best practices for healthy soil, and reduce pesticide use.” Rygg credited fellow volunteer Megan Meyer for her hard work on this campaign.

Confused Why are we even talking about paying off college debts? They signed for the loan, then they should pay off their loan. Here’s a better idea: how about paying off medical debts instead, especially for cancer patients? School loans are a choice, cancer is not. If this administration wants to patronize and buy votes here’s a better way to earn them.

The best present Instead of spending all your time running around, looking for the toy your child wants, why not give them the best present ever: your time? With all the problems out in the world today such as the shortages of supplies, Covid-19 and its mutations, and all of the environmental disasters, we could better use this time to remember what the season is all about and put Christ back into Christmas.
Hometown People are Awesome We at the Livonia Historical Society would like to express our sincere appreciation to Wanda’s Restaurant, Valarie Singleton, and all of the ladies and gentlemen who baked goods, purchased baked goods and supported us during our Holiday Bake Sale. Thank you, Tammy! Thank you to Tammy at Gourmet Goodies in Victor for always welcoming me and my little ones with a big smile when we swing by after school for a croissant! When we stopped in for our Christmas cookies, you even had a present for my toddler. He is still talking to everyone about the trucks Tammy gave him! We can’t wait to stop by the new location this spring, but we will miss you until then!
Memories I thought of this year, 2021,a lot; the loss of people you love that are not here, and the appreciation of others who are here. – The Mother
Road work Again, [local road] is closed in the same location by the same dip with no word when--if ever--it will be repaired. Why am I paying taxes in this town? It has been 35+ years that I have been here. I curse the day that I bought this property. It seems like the only solution is to move out of [local town] and New York State. Death of a senator The death of former Senator from Kansas, Robert Dole, was a sad day for the United States. It’s a shame that all politicians aren’t like Senator Dole in that he loved his country and put it ahead of his political party. He knew how to work together with his opponents to come up with a solution that would best serve the country as a whole. It may be too late for most of us to say thank you to him, but all politicians can still say thanks by following his lead in putting the welfare of our country ahead of their political party. Drink, Drive & Toss I’m so disgusted with my neighbors or the users of my rural, partially-seasonal and dead-end road. As I walk my dogs and constantly pick up your garbage, “the beer can bandit” and “the tea tosser,” among others, are weekly and randomly tossing beer cans, tea containers, and other containers out of their vehicles’ windows. They apparently continue to drink and toss while driving down this road. It is so disheartening that these selfish people have no regard for the environment or for others.

HOW TO ACCOUNT FOR A RISING COST OF LIVING
HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE
Consider relocating. The pandemic forced many companies to transition from in office working to remote working overnight. That trial by fire could have lasting results. A 2020 survey of 317 Chief Financial Officers and leaders in the finance industry found that 74 percent will move at least 5 percent of their previously on-site workforce to permanently remote positions after the pandemic ends. The survey, conducted by Gartner, Inc., also found that nearly one-quarter of respondents will move at least 20 percent of their onsite workers to permanently remote positions. That could make it possible for millions of working professionals to relocate to regions with a lower cost of living than their current towns or cities.
Market: The real estate market is another factor to consider when deciding if the time is right to downsize. A seller’s market can help seniors get the biggest return on their real estate investment, potentially helping them make up for meager retirement savings. For example, home prices skyrocketed across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, making that a great time for sellers to put their homes on the market. Seniors selling to downsize may capitalize on such spikes since they won’t be looking to turn around and buy larger, equally expensive homes once they sell their current place. If the market is down and seniors can withstand the work and cost a little longer, it may be best to wait until things bounce back in sellers’ favor.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all the care, kindness and understanding you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again.” -- Og Mandino
KITCHEN DESIGN WITH HEALTH AND ERGONOMICS IN MIND (NAPSI)—Whether you’re among the 50 million Americans over 65 (90 percent of whom hope to continue to age at home), the 60 percent of families with children at home, have other ability issues or safety concerns or think you could someday, incorporating ergonomic elements that promote a seamless experience in the kitchen can make it a more comfortable place for everyone for many years to come. Smart Sinks Given the amount of time spent in front of the sink, selecting one that considers your lifestyle and how you cook should be a priority. Details such as the durability and hygienic qualities of a sink’s material along with its style and size can impact efficiency and comfort. For example, the latest sink from BLANCO, a manufacturer of finely crafted sinks, is designed to enhance workflow and accommodate all users. A first of its kind, the IKON® 33” Apron 1 3/4 Bowl with Low Divide sink is made with the brand’s exclusive SILGRANIT granite composite material. Easy to clean and scratch resistant, patented SILGRANIT material is a repellent, nonporous surface that eliminates the need to use harsh chemicals when cleaning. The IKON sink also has a convenient low divide that sits just 5 1/2” from the sink bottom, making it easier to handle large pots and baking sheets while still dividing the sink into cleaning and prepping bowls. The apron front or farmhouse design, minimizes the need to lean over as much and so helps reduce strain. Optional accessories further enhance comfort and workflow. A floating grid provides an extra level within the sink so handling hot and heavy pots can be safer and easier. A Floating Cutting Board that fits right on top of the sink instantly creates another workspace beyond the countertop. Faucets Semi-professional and pull-down faucet models help make clean-up more efficient with their easy-to-maneuver design and powerful dual spray features. To make washing hands, food and dishes easier, consider a faucet with sensor technology such as the BLANCO SOLENTA™ Senso Semi-Professional Kitchen Faucet that lets you turn on the water with a wave of your hand. You don’t have to touch the faucet with your hands to get them clean—or if they’re full. Other ways to enhance the ergonomics in your kitchen include: • Use drawers instead of cabinets for storage so there’s less reaching • Install different countertop heights to accommodate various users • Raise the height of the dishwasher and oven if you can • Select nonporous counter materials like quartz that are easy to keep clean • Use LED lights for more brightness from less energy and that are cool to the touch • Consider an easy-to-clean induction cooking surface—it can reduce energy costs, too

Bipolar Disease Takes 4 Different Forms

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES
DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible for a person to reach the age of 70 and just now be diagnosed with bipolar disorder? Are there degrees of impairment, like with autism -- some worse than others? -- C.S. ANSWER: The hallmark of bipolar disease is mania. “Mania” has a specific meaning in psychiatry: It’s a very elevated mood, associated with high amounts of energy and an inability to think clearly, especially to see the consequences of one’s actions. Some common features of people in a manic episode include an inflated sense of self-worth, distractibility and racing ideas. People can be very talkative and feel little need to sleep. Dangerously, people in a manic phase can spend large amounts of money and have many sexual indiscretions. All diseases have a spectrum of severity, and some are quite wide. With bipolar disease in particular, however, there are four distinct forms of the disease. Bipolar I is the classic form, once called “manic depressive illness,” where people have episodes of mania, alternating with periods of normal behavior or depression. People with Bipolar II have depressive episodes and some “hypomanic” episodes: periods of high energy (and sometimes profound productivity), usually without the negative aspects of the “full” manic episode. Cyclothymia is a rapid cycling between hypomania and mild depression. There is a fourth type, “unspecified,” where people have abnormal mood elevations but don’t meet criteria for the other types. Bipolar disease usually has its onset in early adulthood, but sometimes in teens or even childhood. However, I have rarely seen bipolar disease diagnosed in someone as old as 70. It isn’t always clear whether the disease is just manifesting that late, or whether it has been around for many years, but compensated for by the person. Some people don’t interact with a lot of family or friends, and manic or hypomanic episodes might be missed. It’s possible the 70-year-old in question has a quite mild form. Treatment for bipolar disorder can dramatically improve the quality of life of the person and of the family and friends affected by the illness. ***

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS

Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores. Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry.
We Listen More... To Help You Hear Better!

Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.
Dr. Christine Stein Au D.
HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.
Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key. Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

DID YOU KNOW? Parents who want to encourage their children to volunteer may find their efforts at doing so are more convincing if they volunteer themselves. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Adolescence examined the effects that parents who volunteer and talk about volunteering have on children. Researchers found that the children of volunteers were 27 percent more likely to volunteer than children whose parents did not volunteer. In addition, adolescents were 47 percent more likely to volunteer when their parents volunteered and talked about volunteering with their children.

POLL As a new year begins, the wellbeing of our planet continues to be a top concern for many. What do you feel is the most effective way to positively impact the environment?
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
GREEN WAYS TO CLEAN UP SNOW
Dog Balks at Wheelchair DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 9-yearold Shih Tzu “Mitzi” developed a hip problem due to an injury she suffered when much younger (she was a rescue). It’s become almost impossible for her to walk, and her veterinarian recommended she start using a “wheelie” harness to get around. The problem: Mitzi will not use the harness. It’s a struggle to get her into it, and then she just kind of lays there and whimpers once she’s in it. How can I get her to adjust to the harness? -- Claude C., Atlanta DEAR CLAUDE: You’ll need to try a couple of things: check the fit of the harness, and use some gentle encouragement (ahem, treats) to help Mitzi. According to Eddie’s Wheels, which designs wheelchairs and support devices for pets, dogs that still have feeling or some mobility in their hind legs sometimes have more trouble adjusting to wheelchairs than dogs whose hind legs are paralyzed. Also, a poorly fitted wheelchair can cause a dog to feel uncomfortable in the harness. So, check the fit of the wheelchair based on the manufacturer’s recommendations. If Mitzi’s wheelie allows her back legs to touch the ground, make sure that she can do so. This may alleviate her anxiety. If her back seems hunched, make sure the straps are at the correct length so she’s comfortable. If her back sags in the harness, she may need more support. And make sure her backside isn’t lifted into the air; this can cause strain on her front legs. Once the fit is OK, give Mitzi lots of encouragement as you help her into the harness each day. Then, as she progresses, give her a reward at each step: when she first stands up in the harness, when she takes her first step, and so on. Always make it a positive experience, until she gets the hang of her new wheels.

DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.

Age should not have its face lifted, but it should rather teach the world to admire wrinkles as the etchings of experience and the firm line of character. ~ Ralph B. Perry
WHAT’S YOUR ADVANCE CARE PLAN? (NAPSI) — No matter your stage of life, it’s always a good idea to have a long-range care plan in place. A good way to begin is to talk candidly with your family and friends. By starting the conversation, you can express your views on treatment, relay your care preferences and communicate who will make decisions on your behalf. This process of advance-care planning can help ensure your wishes are carried out and bring peace of mind to those you love. Build your advance care plan • Durable financial power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make legal or financial decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated. • Durable healthcare power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make healthcare decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. • Advance-care directive: This document specifies how you receive care in the event you are unable to make those decisions on your own. • Long-term care insurance: This is an insurance product that pays for long-term care services in a variety of settings. Documents and requirements may differ by state. Please consult a legal or financial advisor to ensure use of the correct forms. Make the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) part of your plan As you make plans for the future, consider the potential need for long-term care and the effect it could have on you and your family. Long-term care is the ongoing aid you need if you can no longer perform everyday tasks by yourself due to chronic illness, injury, disability, or the aging process. This type of care is expensive but there’s a way to get help paying for it. Applying for long-term care insurance coverage under the FLTCIP may be a smart choice for you. The FLTCIP is designed to reimburse for qualified long-term care services and can help lessen or eliminate your reliance on a loved one to provide hands-on care. The FLTCIP offers you a choice of caregivers. Informal care provided by friends and family members is covered, as long as the caregiver isn’t your spouse or domestic partner and doesn’t live in your home at the time you become eligible for benefits. (Benefits for care provided by family members is limited to 500 days.) Care provided in an assisted-living facility, an adult daycare, or a nursing home is also covered. If home care is your preference, the stay-at-home benefit includes a range of services that support care in your home, helping you maintain your quality of life in familiar surroundings. This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Looking Out for No. 1
Depending on where you live, you might be required to delay surgery because the hospital is full of COVID patients. That’s the news that’s spreading around the country. It gets worse. If you have an emergency, the ambulance might be a long time in coming because they don’t have enough EMTs, or they might have to come from an adjacent town. Once you get to the hospital, you might be treated in a hallway because no exam rooms are open. The biggest issues to keep us from needing medical attention are physical safety and health. I’ve gone around my house to look at every inch of floor space to be sure there’s nothing that I could possibly trip on. I moved the laundry basket to the closet instead of leaving it near a path where I walk. In the living room I changed one frequently used lamp from a 50-75-100 watt bulb to one that brightens things up with 75-100-150 watts. I removed two small throw rugs ... just got rid of them. Other things might seem small, but really aren’t. I found a balance class on YouTube and I’m following along every other day. I also found several videos on improving flexibility and stretching. When it comes to diet, I made a quick call to my doctor’s office and inquired about vitamins. I was told that a low-dose vitamin C would be appropriate three times a week, and to add an orange to my diet the other days. Ask your doctor before you do this. As much as I hate not being able to select my own items, I’ve gone back to picking up grocery orders at curbside to stay out of stores. It’s up to us to take care of ourselves. That’s the bottom line when it comes to our health and safety. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

SAFELY AVOID POTENTIAL WINTER HAZARDS Removing snow from a roof can be a dangerous prospect. Always use the appropriate equipment, which includes telescoping poles, rather than climbing on slippery roofs. This may be a job best left for a professional, who will have fall-arrest systems and nonslip safety boots.

In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day.

By JoAnn Derson * Generally, for every degree you lower your thermostat during heating season, you reduce your energy costs by 3%. * Just in time for soup season (and my new year’s resolutions), here’s a great fat swap: Drain and rinse 2 cups of white beans and puree with a cup of no-sodium vegetable broth. You can use this as a thickener in place of heavy cream for soups and stews. -- JoAnn * To keep snow off your windshield, use a flannel-backed tablecloth stretched to cover both windshield and wipers. Put it flannel-side to the glass. Then you’ll be able to lift it (and the snow) off your windshield to drive. * Wondering what winter fruits and vegetables are in season? Here’s a sampling: apples, dates and pears, as well as citrus, like grapefruit, oranges and tangerines. For vegetables, consider endive, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, kale, leeks, mushrooms, parsnips, radicchio, rutabagas, sweet potatoes, turnips, yams and winter squash. * “Want to keep your pants from creasing on the hanger? Grab an empty paper-towel tube and slit it down the side. When you slip it over the bottom of the hanger, it creates a wide curve for the pants to lie across, and no more crease!” -- M.U. in Colorado * Remember that as temperatures drop and layers of clothing increase, children in a car seat need special consideration. Remove heavy coats before strapping in a small child or baby. Winter wear can compress during an accident, and it interferes with the straps.

HOMETOWN
Patricia Ann Philipson (Russo) January 1, 2022 Ionia/Fairport: Patricia Ann Philipson, August 27, 1935 – January 1, 2022. Patricia passed away peacefully on January 1, 2022, at Conesus Lake Nursing Home. She was 86 years old. She is survived by her children, Michael Anthony Philipson, Judith Ann Philipson Green (Scott), and Thomas William Philipson, who were by her bedside, and by Lewis and Thomas Stess Johnston, and Jesse Sutterlin, who are all “honorary sons,” and many dear friends. Her daughter, Chrisann Philipson, welcomed her into heaven. She was born in Rochester, NY, into an Italian family and was predeceased by her siblings, Mary Jane and Anthony Russo and her parents, Theresa Cimo Russo and Dominick Russo. Patty lived in Rochester, Ionia, Perinton, and Honeoye, NY. She loved going out on the boat and jet-ski, played elaborate practical jokes on her family, and created many happy memories at her beloved Harvard Cottage on Honeoye Lake. She worked a hard factory job at Crosman Arms in East Bloomfield, making BBs and BB guns. She was a consummate Euchre player, winning many championship games at the Senior Center in Perinton, and took great delight in “euchre-ing” all of her children whenever possible. She traveled the world with cruises to Barbados and the Bahamas, trips to San Francisco and Paris, and even visited Hawaii and Australia. Above all, she had a wicked dry sense of humor which could have you rolling on the floor in laughter, or, alternately, cursing at her under your breath. Life threw challenge after challenge at her, but she carried on through all of it with great dignity and an incredible sense of style. She even earned the nickname “Hollywood” at Conesus Lake Nursing Home, where she received excellent care and true compassion by the entire staff. She loved clothes that sparkled and had a shoe collection which once seemed to rival that of Imelda Marcos. She loved to decorate her home (orange was her favorite color!) and moved the furniture around about once a month just to “freshen things up.”
1. Baja coastline 2. "I just flew the coop. Yay!" Diane McCullough 3. "Is football season over yet?" ask Paisley Rae and Daisy Mae of Warsaw. 4. "If I sit still enough, you won't think I'm real!"
But most of all she was a Mom. She worked hard to put a roof over our heads and food in our stomachs. While sometimes too exhausted to do much else, she rubbed our bellies when sick, put butter on our burned fingers, and taught us about the consequences of our actions. Above all, she set a great example about how to rise above all life’s challenges with grace and laughter. Her presence will be sorely missed. A graveside service will be held in the summer at Miller’s Corners Cemetery, Ionia, NY. The date and time will be announced in the future and a Celebration of Life Gathering will be held following the service. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Embrace Your Sisters, PO Box 322, Canandaigua, NY 14424 or online at www.embraceyoursisters.org.
