A 2017 study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention found that about one-third of women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in the United States live at least five years after diagnosis. Also known as stage IV breast cancer, metastatic breast cancer is the most advanced stage of the disease. Metastatic breast cancer refers to breast cancer that has spread beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to other parts of the body. Patients diagnosed with breast cancer also should know that improved treatments may further their chances of surviving a diagnosis, even a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer. In fact, the American Cancer Society notes that survival rates are based on women who were diagnosed and treated at least five years earlier. In the time since those survival rates were documented, treatments could have advanced even further, potentially improving the five-year survival rates for metastatic breast cancer.

DID YOU KNOW? Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.

Stump Grinding and Tree Service

TREE SERVICES GUIDE TO PROPER TREE PRUNING Trees may require pruning for a variety reasons. Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape. Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year.

It is impossible to identify the first Halloween costume and which masks the earliest celebrants donned in efforts to keep away the evil spirits during Samhain, which historians believe is the Celtic precursor to Halloween. According to Lesley Bannatyne, an author who has written extensively about the history of Halloween, masks and coverups were designed to symbolize ghosts and the souls of the dead, first for Samhain and later for the custom of “souling,” which was intended to cut back on pagan influences. Costumes of saints and evil spirits also were popular during this time. When immigrants brought Halloween customs to North America, early 20th century costumes featured much of the same - ghosts and ghouls. It wasn’t until the 1920s and 1930s that pop culture began to infiltrate costumes. In fact, one of the first costume companies, J. Halpern Company, began licensing pop culture images like Mickey Mouse and Popeye around this time. By the 1960s, costumes were largely store-bought, spurring entire industries. Many 1980s kids recall buying boxed costumes that consisted of rigid plastic masks with eye holes (and very small holes by the mouth and nose) that stayed in place with thin elastic straps, and a plastic sheeting costume that went over clothes. Modern costumes have evolved into outfits that are far more complex. Page 8

Here’s a tip • If you have trouble opening the lid on glass jars, try using a pair of standard dishwashing gloves. They work to grip both the lid and the jar. They work especially well if your hands are the least bit moist. -- D.Y. in Pennsylvania • Save your old tissue boxes. They can be used to store plastic grocery store bags for easy use. They can then be stacked up and stored orderly. I use mine for garbage bags. • If you start now purchasing or making a gift or two each week, you could have more than a dozen Christmas presents taken care of before December even begins. It’s a good way to ease the pressure on your time and your wallet. -- L.S. in Indiana Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Serving Our Community for over 20 years.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 69-year-old who used to walk up 75 to 90 flights of steps several days a week as exercise. After a steering wheel airbag went off and damaged my heart, I am afraid my ability to do that stopped. After years of medication, I am now on a pacemaker, which definitely helps. Could the exercise have weakened my heart to such a degree that it could be viewed as overdoing it, therefore exacerbating my condition? -- Anon. ANSWER: In general, exercise does not harm the heart. On the contrary, exercise is almost always good for the heart. However, there are exceptions. In healthy people, there is an optimal amount of exercise, and extreme levels of exercise (on the order of running more than 10 miles a day every day) begin to decrease the benefit that a person gets from exercise. (This remains controversial, but I am convinced from the data.) In people with severe heart disease (the kind with blockages in the arteries), overdoing exercise can lead to a heart attack, but this is an exception. For every person who gets harmed by overexercising, there must be a hundred who don’t get adequate exercise. The fact that you have improved a lot on the pacemaker suggests that at least part of your problem wasn’t with the pump function of your heart, nor with the arteries leading to your heart. The problem lies with the electrical supply. Once a pacemaker is in, that problem is immediately alleviated, but the heart may still be deconditioned (“out of shape”). Regular exercise will help the problem. Your cardiologist can better answer the question for you and also give you advice on how to build up your exercise tolerance over time. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. BREAST CANCER TREATMENT Hormone therapy is a cancer treatment that removes hormones or blocks their action and stops cancer cells from growing. Hormones are substances made by glands in the body and circulated in the bloodstream. Some hormones can cause certain cancers to grow. If tests show that the cancer cells have places where hormones can attach (receptors), drugs, surgery, or radiation therapy is used to reduce the production of hormones or block them from working. The hormone estrogen, which makes some breast cancers grow, is made mainly by the ovaries. Treatment to stop the ovaries from making estrogen is called ovarian ablation. Hormone therapy with tamoxifen is often given to patients with early localized breast cancer that can be removed by surgery and those with metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread to other parts of the body). Hormone therapy with tamoxifen or estrogens can act on cells all over the body and may increase the chance of developing endometrial cancer. Women taking tamoxifen should have a pelvic exam every year to look for any signs of cancer. Any vaginal bleeding, other than menstrual bleeding, should be reported to a doctor as soon as possible. Hormone therapy with a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonist is given to some premenopausal women who have just been diagnosed with hormone receptor positive breast cancer. LHRH agonists decrease the body’s estrogen and progesterone. Hormone therapy with an aromatase inhibitor is given to some postmenopausal women who have hormone receptor positive breast cancer. Aromatase inhibitors decrease the body’s estrogen by blocking an enzyme called aromatase from turning androgen into estrogen. Anastrozole, letrozole, and exemestane are types of aromatase inhibitors. For the treatment of early localized breast cancer that can be removed by surgery, certain aromatase inhibitors may be used as adjuvant therapy instead of tamoxifen or after 2 to 3 years of tamoxifen use. For the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, aromatase inhibitors are being tested in clinical trials to compare them to hormone therapy with tamoxifen. Other types of hormone therapy include megestrol acetate or antiestrogen therapy such as fulvestrant. Page 14

Breast Cancer

FAQ The World Health Organization reports that roughly 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. By the end of that year, there were nearly eight million women alive who had been diagnosed with the disease in the previous half decade. A breast cancer diagnosis inevitably leads to questions about the disease. The bulk of those questions undoubtedly are asked by the millions of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. But millions more individuals, including friends and family members of recently diagnosed women, may have their own questions. Women can discuss the specifics of their diagnosis with their physicians. In the meantime, the following are some frequently asked questions and answers that can help anyone better understand this potentially deadly disease.

What is breast cancer? Cancer is a disease marked by the abnormal growth of cells that invade healthy cells in the body. Breast cancer is a form of the disease that begins in the cells of the breast. The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) notes that the cancer can then invade surrounding tissues or spread to other areas of the body.

Can exercise help to reduce my breast cancer risk? The NBCF notes that exercise strengthens the immune system and women who commit to as little as three hours of physical activity per week can begin to reduce their risk for breast cancer. However, even routine exercise does not completely eliminate a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.

Is there a link between diet and breast cancer?

Is there a link between oral contraceptives and breast cancer? The NBCF reports that women who have been using birth control pills for more than five years are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer. However, the organization notes that risk is very small because modern birth control pills contain low amounts of hormones.

Can breastfeeding reduce breast cancer risk? Breastfeeding and breast cancer are linked, though the NBCF notes that the role breastfeeding plays in lowering cancer risk depends on how long a woman breastfeeds. The World Cancer Research Fund International notes that evidence indicates that the greater number of months women continue breastfeeding, the greater the protection they have against breast cancer.

Is there a connection between stress & breast cancer? The NBCF notes that researchers have found that traumatic events and losses can alter how the immune system functions, which can provide an opportunity for cancer cells to establish themselves within a person’s body. The NBCF urges women to identify ways to keep their stress levels in check. Breast cancer education can be a valuable asset as women seek to reduce their risk for the disease.

The organization Susan G. Komen®, a nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer, reports that studies have shown eating fruits and vegetables may be linked to a lower risk for breast cancer, while consuming alcohol is linked to an increased risk for the disease. In addition, the NBCF reports that a high-fat diet increases breast cancer risk because fat triggers estrogen production that can fuel tumor growth.

October is Anti-Bullying Month

Educate Yourself and Your Children

P

arents go to great lengths to protect their children. Keeping a watchful eye is a great way to protect kids when they're around the house, but parents may need to look for more subtle signs to determine if their children are being mistreated when they leave home. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that roughly 20 percent of students between the ages of 12 and 18 experience bullying nationwide. Parents might once have written off bullying as part of growing up, but research has long since indicated that bullying can be very harmful to youngsters. The DHHS notes that research indicates that persistent bullying can lead to or exacerbate feelings of isolation, rejection, exclusion, and despair. Children who are persistently bullied also may experience new or worsening feelings of anxiety and depression. Parents can play a vital role in preventing bullying. Much of that role involves parents educating themselves about bullying, including what it is and what it's not and what are some warning signs that a child is involved in bullying.

What is bullying? The DHHS website Stopbullying.gov defines bullying as unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived imbalance of power. Bullying behavior is repeated or has the potential to be repeated over time. The imbalance of power associated with bullying involves the children who bully using some semblance of power they have over the children they're bullying to harm or control those youngsters. Their power may be physical strength, access to embarrassing information or popularity.

What isn't bullying? Various types of aggressive behavior have the potential to be harmful, but they do not fall under the umbrella of bullying. For example, Stopbullying.gov notes that children between the ages of three and five are learning how to coexist with one another, including how to share and cooperate. Children in these age groups may be aggressive if they don't get what they want, but their actions in such instances do not constitute bullying. More information about potentially harmful, non-bullying behaviors is available at Stopbullying.gov. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

What are some signs a child is being bullied? The DHHS notes that not all children who are being bullied exhibit warning signs. In addition, some signs might be more subtle than others. But some potential indicators that a child is being bullied include: • Unexplainable injuries • Lost or destroyed clothing, books, electronics, or jewelry • Frequent headaches or stomach aches, feeling sick or faking illness • Changes in eating habits, like suddenly skipping meals or binge eating. For example, children who are being bullied may come home from school hungry because they did not eat lunch. • Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares • Declining grades, loss of interest in schoolwork, or not wanting to go to school • Sudden loss of friends or avoidance of social situations • Feelings of helplessness or decreased self esteem • Self-destructive behaviors such as running away from home, harming themselves, or talking about suicide What are some signs a child is bullying other children? Parents also should be on the lookout for signs their children are bullying other youngsters. Such signs include: • Kids get into physical or verbal altercations • Children have friends who bully others • Increasingly aggressive behavior • Frequent trips to the principal's office or to detention • Kids have extra money or new belongings but cannot explain how they got the cash or items • Kids blame others for their problems • An unwillingness to accept responsibility for their actions • Kids are competitive and worry about their reputation or popularity Parents have a vital role to play in preventing bullying so all youngsters feel safe and sound inside and outside of school. BREAST CANCER SCREENING Screening is looking for cancer before a person has any symptoms. This can help find cancer at an early stage. When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat. By the time symptoms appear, cancer may have begun to spread. Scientists are trying to better understand which people are more likely to get certain types of cancer. They also study the things we do and the things around us to see if they cause cancer. This information helps doctors recommend who should be screened for cancer, which screening tests should be used, and how often the tests should be done. It is important to remember that your doctor does not necessarily think you have cancer if he or she suggests a screening test. Screening tests are given when you have no cancer symptoms. If a screening test result is abnormal, you may need to have more tests done to find out if you have cancer. These are called diagnostic tests.

Hallow een is certainly know n for the spooky decorations that adorn homes and for the creative costumes children put on to canvas the neighborhood. But for many youngsters, Hallow een is all about the candy. In just a few hours, trick-or-treaters can accumulate a substantial amount of assorted chocolates, confections and other sw eet treats. Once everyone has had their fill of their favorite items, candy often gets relegated to a giant bow l on the kitchen table, w here it beckons each resident w ho passes by. Rather than submitting to the call of the candy and sacrificing your dental health as a result, enterprising individuals can repurpose that leftover Hallow een candy. PAW’S CORNER Diesel was my first dog and he changed my life. I suffered from depression and having him by my side has been my motivation to keep me going. He is my best friend.

SEND US A PHOTO! and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Submit online at gvpennysaver.com • Share With Us or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Acid Reflux May be the Culprit in Cat’s Digestive Issues DEAR PAW’S CORNER: In regard to your recent article on a cat’s constant vomiting: I had the same issue with my cat. Stella was vomiting once or twice a day for several weeks. I couldn’t figure out why; there was no issue with new rugs or furniture. When they sprayed the lawns in our complex, I made sure not to track anything into the house. And Stella was an indoor cat, so she wasn’t being exposed to other cats. I got her in to see her vet, who ran tests and blood work and found nothing seriously wrong. The vet said that Stella might have GERD (acid reflux), and to give her one-quarter of a 10 mg famotidine pill each day. I cut each pill into fourths and give it to her in the morning with a little treat. It works perfectly; Stella no longer vomits repeatedly and has been doing well for the past two years. She gets a check-up every year at the vet and comes through with flying colors. Perhaps the owner could run this possibility by her vet and see what they think! -- Sande G., Webster, New York DEAR SANDE: That is certainly a possibility! Readers, be sure to check in with the veterinarian if your cat suffers from symptoms such as vomiting frequently or signs of distress after eating like excessive meowing or howling. Acid reflux is one possibility, but as Sande noted, it’s important to rule out more serious conditions. Be sure to ask plenty of questions at the vet’s office. Over-the-counter medications are a possibility, but keep in mind that formulations for humans contain larger dosages than a cat needs and may contain ingredients that are not great for your pets. The vet can advise you best. Does your cat take over-the-counter instead of prescription medications? Tell us about it at ask@pawscorner.com.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

HOW TO KEEP KIDS SAFE ON HALLOWEEN Keep weekdays in mind: Halloween falls on a Monday in 2022 and that could be more dangerous than if it fell on a weekend. According to Autoinsurance.com, which conducted a study that analyzed 24 years’ worth of data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), injuries to children and pedestrians in general were higher on weeknight than weekend holidays, with most accidents occurring between 6 p.m. and 7 pm - prime commuter time. Exercise extreme caution walking around this year.

Rochester’s Finest Class of 2023 Recognized B Y PAT T Y S C H W A R Z W E L L E R

The WNY Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation recognized the CFF Rochester’s Finest Class of 2023 at a Celebration Dinner on October 19th. This year’s honorees (with employer) are: Cullen Baker, FTS, Inc Jenelle Baker, KeyBank Austin Barkley, Bankers Life John Bennett, Worldwide Electric Sarah Fitzgerald, The Aragon Company Amanda Harvat, KAFL Lauren Henry, Pinnacle Hill Chiropractic Ashley Hill, Borg & Ide Imaging Jessica Kouzan, Keller Williams Realty Greater Rochester Michael Lawless, Villager Construction Nicole Liberatore, Innovative Solutions Alyson Mancuso, SWBR John Nucci, Woods Oviatt Gilman Bonnie Parrotta, Midtown Athletic Club Sean Phillips, Arctic Wolf CaTyra Polland, City of Rochester Ryan Proud, LeChase Construction Alexa Segrue, URMC Gina Trippe, Good Apple Ke’Shara Webb Fields, CPL Dustin Welch, Passero The Rochester’s Finest are honored for their career success, commitment to the community, and dedication to raising funds and awareness to help support CF research, patient services, and other mission-based initiatives of the CF Foundation. The program runs for 12 weeks and culminates in a celebration of their accomplishments. Included in the program are opportunities for professional development, networking, and developing skills as a leadership volunteer. In 2022, the CF Foundation funded $265 million in research and care for people with the disease. Money raised by Rochester’s Finest and hundreds of events nationwide support the Foundation’s mission to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with CF the opportunity to lead long, fulfilling lives by funding research and drug development, partnering with the CF community, and advancing high-quality, specialized care. “Together with our community we are transforming cystic fibrosis from a deadly childhood disease to the best story in medicine,” said Heather McKeever, Executive Director of the WNY Chapter. “When the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was first founded, children with CF typically did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, people with CF are achieving milestones like going to college and starting families of their own. We are making incredible progress, but

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

we can’t do it alone. We invite everyone in the Rochester community to help us make ‘CF’ stand not for cystic fibrosis, but for ‘Cure Found.’” Cullen Baker of FTS, Inc. says he grew up around Cystic Fibrosis, with two close cousins living with the disease. Baker has been involved with CF fundraising for decades and felt honored and excited to be part of the program this year. Baker says, “After seeing the advancements in medicine and technology over 30 years, I can see the immediate value the CFF has, and what this has done to address the horrible disease. I am confident that their drive will continue to advance beyond the day there is a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. CaTyra Polland of the City of Rochester says CFF has provided the participants with incredible professional development opportunities, networking and learning more about the disease and its impact on individuals, families, and the community. Pollard says, “The most meaningful experience has been meeting with Dr. Shaun Nelms to discuss his debut book … to learn about his experience in the education system and how he transformed East High School.” Pollard says CFF conducts essential research to improve the lives of those living with CF. I attended a celebration in Buffalo, NY where she witnessed the impact of CFF. She applauds the board members and staff, who “are so passionate about the agency’s mission and vision. I’m honored to help raise awareness.”

About the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Foundation funds more CF research than any other organization, and nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of Foundation support. Based in Bethesda, MD, the Foundation also supports and accredits a national care center network that has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a model of care for a chronic disease. The CF Foundation is a donor-supported non-profit organization. For more information, visit cff.org. Love to write? You could earn CASH when you share your original story, personal experience, community happening or school event with us!
