Sunny Mike Foundation Gives Back to Local Veterans B Y K I M B E R LY L O N G
M
ichael David Conrad was a United States Navy Marine in the Vietnam War. His sister, Beth Bigley, and his daughter, Debra Lubberts have started The Sunny Mike Foundation in honor of Mike to provide the help for Veterans they feel is strongly needed in their community. As a father to Deb, a brother to Beth, and a beloved friend to many, Mike made a difference. His cheerful spirit, humor, and eagerness to help everyone around him would have made it difficult to know that he was suffering through a list of painful complications involving his health. According to Mike’s family, for the last fifteen years of his life, he was unable to get the help he needed. Mike often complained about the lack of support that was present for his fellow Veterans. According to those close to Mike, he was always “paying it forward.” This year, Deb and Beth began their journey in creating a community to support Mike’s fellow Veterans. On August 9th, 2021, Mike’s daughter, Deb, came up with the idea of having a golf outing in honor of her late father. This idea very quickly turned into something much bigger. Deb and Beth decided to fill out a 501(3)(c) form to start a foundation in honor of Mike and the endless other Veterans who do not get the help they need. On August 17th, 2021, The Sunny Mike Foundation was born. While there are organizations that focus on aiding Veterans, sometimes it’s just not enough. This is, of course, no fault of those organizations. There is simply a lack of urgency in our communities to support our Veterans in ways they need and more than deserve. In Mike’s case, he had to wait months at a time just for tests and doctor appointments. We can honor everything current Veterans and Veterans of many years gone by have done for us by making sure local Veterans receive all the help and support they need.
Veterans can apply for aid and support through this foundation. This support could be financial help with medical bills, “Sunny Mike” D. Conrad having a blast! lowering cabinets in a Veteran’s home to make them more accessible, making a desired trip with Honor Flight Buffalo to Washington, D.C. to see the memorials, and more possible. Applications are welcomed and can be found on the Sunny Mike Foundation website.

Foundation does plan to help Veterans get the necessities to live happy, healthy lives, it also looks to better their lives by acknowledging their strengths as individuals and by putting those skills to use. Any family, business, or individual who is interested in supporting a Veteran could, therefore, be supported by that Veteran in return. “A community that gives back is what we need,” says Deb Lubberts. Having skills or strengths that others in the community may find helpful can provide Veterans with meaningful jobs that spark connections with other members of their community. These givebacks aren’t limited to job skills. For example, a Veteran may be great at organization or meal planning and want to share that with others in the community who struggle in those areas. Five volunteer members have made The Sunny Mike Foundation a reality: Cass Lubberts (film editor, creator of SunnyMike.org), Megan Radtke, Scott and Beth Bigley, and Debra Lubberts. Cass is Debra’s son, and Scott and Beth have been married for over three decades. This tight-knit group has decided that there will be a yearly golf fundraiser in honor of Mike D. Conrad on or around his birthday of September 19th. Their goal is to reach as many Veterans through this program as they can, so they are sending out a call to all Veterans and those interested in donating their time and skills to support the Veterans in their community. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.
BREAST CANCER SCREENING A clinical breast exam is an exam of the breast by a doctor or other health professional. The doctor will carefully feel the breasts and under the arms for lumps or anything else that seems unusual. It is not known if having clinical breast exams decreases the chance of dying from breast cancer. Breast self-exams may be done by women or men to check their breasts for lumps or other changes. It is important to know how your breasts usually look and feel. If you feel any lumps or notice any other changes, talk to your doctor. Shirley A. De John October 5, 2021 Shirley A. De John (Gleason, Carris) of Melbourne, Florida, formally of Rochester, New York passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at the age of 86. Born in Rochester, New York to Samuel P. De John and Anna Citro. Shirley moved to Melbourne in 1979 where she resided until November of 2020. The remainder of her time she spent in Eustis, Florida until her passing on October 5, 2021. Shirley worked for Harris/RF Communications in Rochester, New York, then, upon moving to Melbourne, Florida, made the transition over to Real Estate, becoming a Broker/Owner of her own real estate franchise. Shirley retired at the age of 70, enjoying her time with her family and friends. Dancing, tending to her orchids, fishing and being a part of the Moose Club in Melbourne were all part of Shirley’s enjoyment. Shirley is survived by her daughters, Lynne Messana (Mark) of Piffard, New York, Holly Weston of Melbourne, Florida, and Leslie LoVoy (Wayne) of Eustis, Florida; Grandchildren, Stephen Rose, Joseph Messana, Anthony Messana, Victor Messana, Erika Bessell, Robert Weston, and Noah LoVoy; as well as 7 great-grandchildren.
Tips on planning a memorial service • Set the date and time. Memorial services should be planned in consideration of any family members who have traveled from out of town. Set a date close enough to the funeral or anniversary event that visiting friends and family can attend. •␣Choose a location. Make the memorial service a reflection of the person whose memory you’re honoring by choosing decorations and music the individual would have liked. Use floral arrangements with the person’s favorite flowers or colors and compile a play list of favorite songs or types of music to be played throughout the service. •␣Get input from loved ones. Ask friends and family members of the deceased individual for input about special touches that will best help remember their loved one. •␣Arrange for guest speakers. A key component of many memorial services is having a series of guest speakers who can provide their personal perspective on the deceased person’s life and the legacy being left behind.

You don’t need a certificate from an organization like the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters, but having a certificate helps prospective clients feel more confident that you know your job and take it seriously. Here’s a few steps to take before starting a pet sitting business. -- Talk to your parents about what you want to do. Because you’re under 18, it’s important to involve them in this decision. -- Do some trial pet-sitting. With your parents’ permission and supervision, pet sit for family friends or relatives. You’ll get valuable experience and learn if you really like doing this. -- Join pet sitting groups on social media. You can glean lots of useful advice from experienced pet sitters. -- Learn about starting and running a small business. DEAR DR. ROACH: Is acupuncture a possible therapy to relieve back pain and stiffness associated with Parkinson’s disease? -- R.G. ANSWER: There have been many trials that show acupuncture is superior to no treatment for various symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. This is true especially for fatigue, but also in a composite score that includes stiffness. A systematic review of published studies found that “acupuncture has significant positive effects.” Other studies have shown that sham acupuncture, where random areas of the body were needled, was also effective in treating symptoms. This has led some skeptical authors to conclude that acupuncture is a placebo effect: The treatment convinces people that they are getting better, so they do feel better. However, if acupuncture were completely harmless and improved symptoms, I would recommend it to people who were interested. Acupuncture is mostly, but not entirely, harmless. Adverse events are not common with acupuncture, but they do happen. Minor adverse effects happen in about 9% of cases. Serious adverse events such as pneumothorax (sometimes called a collapsed lung) and nerve damage are occasionally reported. ***

BREAST CANCER TREATMENT Most patients with breast cancer have surgery to remove the cancer. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is the removal of the sentinel lymph node during surgery. The sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node to receive lymphatic drainage from a tumor. It is the first lymph node where the cancer is likely to spread. A radioactive substance and/or blue dye is injected near the tumor. The substance or dye flows through the lymph ducts to the lymph nodes. The first lymph node to receive the substance or dye is removed. A pathologist views the tissue under a microscope to look for cancer cells. After the sentinel lymph node biopsy, the surgeon removes the tumor using breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy. If cancer cells were not found in the sentinel lymph node, it may not be necessary to remove more lymph nodes. If cancer cells were found, more lymph nodes will be removed through a separate incision. This is called a lymph node dissection. Types of surgery include the following: • Breast-conserving surgery is an operation to remove the cancer and some normal tissue around it, but not the breast itself. Part of the chest wall lining may also be removed if the cancer is near it. This type of surgery may also be called lumpectomy, partial mastectomy, segmental mastectomy, quadrantectomy, or breast-sparing surgery. • Total mastectomy: Surgery to remove the whole breast that has cancer. This procedure is also called a simple mastectomy. Some of the lymph nodes under the arm may be removed and checked for cancer. This may be done at the same time as the breast surgery or after. This is done through a separate incision. • Modified radical mastectomy: Surgery to remove the whole breast that has cancer, many of the lymph nodes under the arm, the lining over the chest muscles, and sometimes, part of the chest wall muscles. Chemotherapy may be given before surgery to remove the tumor. When given before surgery, chemotherapy will shrink the tumor and reduce the amount of tissue that needs to be removed during surgery. Treatment given before surgery is called preoperative therapy or neoadjuvant therapy. Even if the doctor removes all the cancer that can be seen at the time of the surgery, some patients may be given radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy after surgery, to kill any cancer cells that are left. Treatment given after the surgery, to lower the risk that the cancer will come back, is called postoperative therapy or adjuvant therapy. If a patient is going to have a mastectomy, breast reconstruction (surgery to rebuild a breast’s shape after a mastectomy) may be considered. Breast reconstruction may be done at the time of the mastectomy or at some time after. The reconstructed breast may be made with the patient’s own (nonbreast) tissue or by using implants filled with saline or silicone gel. Page 17

Camber, or the inw ard or outw ard angle of the tire w hen view ed from the front of the vehicle, w ill be adjusted. In addition, “ toe,” or the extent to w hich the tires turn inw ard or outw ard w hen view ed from above, w ill be adjusted. Caster angle also helps balance steering, stability and cornering. Caster is the angle of your steering axis w hen view ed from the side of your vehicle. W hen tires are balanced correctly and aligned, vehicles w ill offer a smooth ride w ith little to no vibrations. Having tires serviced can maximize their performance and lifespan.

According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. Fill a large pot several inches deep with water. Seal all but an inch or so of the bag. As you lower the bag into the water (zipper top up) the air will escape through the unsealed portion. When no air remains, seal the bag and then remove from the water. * “Have you tried this single-serving blender hack using a mason jar? Many standard-size blender blades can be screwed on to a pint Mason jar. Rec Center Almost Opened Again My local recreation center almost opened again. A month ago, the center opened for indoor walking with strict rules. One week later, during a heated board meeting, mostly about masks versus no masks, the rec center supervisor said he was shutting it down for the foreseeable future. Since then there’s been a hue and cry, mostly between the mask police and the anti-mask folks. The center supervisor, ever accommodating but safety minded, declared that there would be certain days for people who wanted masks and days for those who didn’t want to wear masks. Walking on the track, he said, would be the only center activity. “Not fair,” cried those (mostly teen boys) who also wanted basketball, and no, they didn’t want to wear masks. Fine, he replied, there could be oneon-one basketball in three of the center’s courts. But, said others, if teen basketball was allowed, why couldn’t there be adult classes as well? So, the supervisor adjusted the schedule, did measurements on the floor, and outlined space on a basketball court where a no-mask yoga class could be held in the mornings with participants 8 feet apart. You know what happened next, right? The aerobics people wanted a class as well. The spin class wanted space and time (and the bikes). Then those from the still-closed senior center line-dance group wanted to use rec center space. It was right about that time that the supervisor quietly quit. I wasn’t there, but I have it on good authority that he handed the center’s keys to the loudest anti-mask person, saying, “You’re in charge. When the COVID rates go higher in this town, it’s all on you.” The next day, the town changed the locks on the rec center doors. The supervisor, as I heard it, packed a bag and retreated to his cabin in the woods, where he plans to stay until everyone comes to their senses. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Getting vaccinated does not reduce your risk of transmitting Covid. It reduces your risk of becoming severely ill and taking up a coveted bed in the hospital. Unfortunately, the mandate did not allow for those healthcare workers who put their lives on the line, got Covid, are fully recovered, and have natural immunity. Natural immunity has been found to be stronger than vaccinated immunity. Please look this up yourself in studies that have come out of Israel. I believe most of the healthcare workers who chose not to get vaccinated did so because they had Covid and recovered. Some suggest it may cause harmful health effects to be vaccinated when you have already recovered and have natural immunity, especially in younger people. It is all just so sad how divisive this has become, and it shouldn’t be.

Now firing So the threats to fire employees for not getting something that was never required of them before now is currently being carried out. If these companies want to fire perfectly good employees willing to work, why do those companies hang banners on the fronts of their buildings that say, “Now Hiring?” It would stand to reason if companies need workers, they should not be firing them. Would it not be more accurate for the company to hang a banner that said, “Now Firing?”

Mary Anne initially had to void the entire order because some items apparently were not covered by our insurance plan (even though they had been before).
