Harvest your garden frequently to remove opportunities for groundhogs to prey on produce. They’re particularly attracted to cantaloupes, cabbage, green beans, cucumbers, zucchini, and corn. They also like the tender greens from lettuce. Consider using raised garden beds so groundhogs will not have easy access.

The time of the falling leaves has come again. Once more in our morning walk we tread upon carpets of gold and crimson, of brown and bronze, woven by the winds or the rains out of these delicate textures while we slept. How beautifully the leaves grow old! How full of light and color are their last days! There are exceptions, of course. The leaves of most of the fruit-trees fade and wither and fall ingloriously. They bequeath their heritage of color to their fruit. Upon it they lavish the hues which other trees lavish upon their leaves....

But in October what a feast to the eye our woods and groves present! The whole body of the air seems enriched by their calm, slow radiance. They are giving back the light they have been absorbing from the sun all summer.

DID YOU KNOW?

Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup® , grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matterinthesoil.Anothersignofa possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.

While many homeowners, and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

A Man of Many Instruments, Ben Hockenberry Harmonizes in the Rochester Music Scene

In the bustling halls of St. John Fisher University, Ben Hockenberry wears many hats. As the Head of Library Systems and Subscriptions, he navigates the world of academia with precision and expertise. He recently published a study on the effects on institutional database subscriptions when articles are published outside of a ‘journal issue.’ He is an expert at his day job, but what makes him particularly admirable is his variety of self-taught musical prowess. Ben is deeply embedded in the vibrant Rochester music scene.

Within Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, the Irish Musicians Association, Ben served as the past Rochester Chapter Chairperson and Public Relations Officer, and currently fills the crucial role of Youth Protection Officer. He coordinates and plays in demonstration bands for the Comhaltas chapter, and performs for Irish, Contra, and English dances in various combinations. His band Rós Gorm, with Ben Goehring, Peri Malone, and Ella Powers, most recently played at the Niagara Celtic Festival.

For Ben, the heart of his musical passion lies in the intimate setting of Irish sessions. e last Sunday of each month finds him at Johnny’s in Rochester, where musicians gather to share melodies and create magic. It’s in these informal gatherings that Ben finds a special kind of musical communion. He says he “loves the community of players, being able to communicate with other musicians without words.” He also likes to play for dancers. And for him, solo practice is a sort of meditation against the stresses of life.

Ben plays an incredibly wide array of instruments. While he modestly claims to play “too many instruments” (tin whistle, button accordion, bodhrán [the Irish drum], bouzouki, ukelele, guitar, and bass), his primary focus lies on the tenor (4-string) banjo and the mandolin, which share the same tuning as a fiddle, allowing Ben to play melodies in any key and easily facilitate playing chords.

Ben says he can get creative and improvise more with the tenor banjo and mandolin because he’s more experienced with them, but he enjoys the sound of the accordion (though he must work harder to get the button accordion to play what’s in his head, he says).

inking about his musical journey, Ben admits that he only dabbled in music as a kid (trombone for a month, drums for a few lessons, a little piano here and there), but nothing stuck. In high school, he sang in a few musicals. en in college, he hung out with folks from the Geneseo String Band, who took him to an Irish session in Rochester, where he says, “I caught the bug. From there, I picked up bass, mandolin, and banjo, and the rest is history.”

Around 2014, Ben started teaching an Association-led mixedinstrument melody workshop in an annual series Comhaltas ran at Nazareth College. He started teaching private lessons over the next couple of years, expanding his network and spreading music. Now, Ben teaches a class at Fisher that leads students through Irish history and culture while teaching them some tin whistle and dance along the way.

Even without childhood musical roots, Ben has been writing notation, tablature, and ABCs for tunes and technical exercises for

students for a while now. He says, “I’m a fan of ear learning methods, but want to provide materials to learners in whatever ways they find most manageable.” So, he started adding staff notation to his audio tracks for Learners Sessions about five years ago, and about a year or two ago added mandolin/tenor banjo tablature to his YouTube videos in response to requests from one of his social media communities.

Ben says his most notable musical moment may be the first time Lynn Pilaroscia, patriarch of the local Irish ceili band, invited Ben to play in the band. “It was a huge honor,” Ben says. Ben stepped in to coordinate the band when Lynn stepped back, and Ben has enjoyed inviting other young musicians to experience the joy of playing for

To budding musicians, Ben says, “Find music you love, don’t be afraid to make a fool of yourself, and play out with others whenever

He looks forward to bringing back the annual free music/dance workshop day this fall, tentatively scheduled for November 5 at East Rochester High School, partnering with ERSD’s Roisin Dubh

Check out Ben’s Irish set dancing group at Irondequoit Recreation Center at 6:30 every Monday night; Johnny’s session every Last Sunday of the Month; and mark your calendars for his next Contra Dance with Ben Goehring and Barb Seppeler at e Well on Empire Blvd on October 20 at 6pm.

• Two tips for sewing buttons: First, for pants buttons, use unwaxed dental floss. It’s incredibly strong and can take a lot of abuse. Second, slip a pin between the button and the fabric before sewing on. When you’re finished, remove the pin. e button has some room behind it, and it will last longer.

• is is a tip for us singletons. I love whipped topping on my hot chocolate, but it doesn’t always last in my fridge. I buy a tub of it, and spoon it into mug-size dollops on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. I live in a small community that is 62 and over and disabled. Recently our community has been taken over by a new company which no one within our facility has seen, met, or even heard about. We only know of the name, and yet that doesn’t even to seem to be the truth! Everyone here is a little scared because we don’t know what’s going on and from inside information everyone’s checks have not been cashed for rent. We have no one in the office and no maintenance! There are three communities that this supposed company bought and they too are in arms about the situation. Our grass is getting a little out of hand, and being a disabled community, people are a bit scared, and no one has any answers for us. Please help us!

Commuting to and from work may notseemlikethemosteco-friendly daily ritual. But there are ways to commute and conserve fuel at the same time.

Why a clean air filter is important in your vehicle

Motorists routinely check their tires for proper inflation, top off engine fluid levels and maintain oil change schedules. But some drivers do not understand the importance of keeping engine air filtersclean.

Engine air filters are a relatively inexpensive vehicle part, but they perform a very important job.For every gallon of gas a car burns, it uses the equivalent of 12,000 gallons of air, and that air must be filtered to help keep an engine clean.

Air filters catch all of the dust, grime, insects, sap, leaves, and any other debris that may get sucked up past the air intake of the vehicle’s grill and into the engine itself.Without the air filter, those contaminants may compromise the engine, causing corrosion and abrasion. If the air filter in the engine becomes too dirtyandisnotchangedregularly, theengineisstarvedofair. Clean air filters allow just the right ratio of air to fuel to enable the engine to function properly. Engines need adequate air for the combustion process to take place. Without the proper combustion levels, vehicles cannot perform properly or efficiently and the engine may burn more gas or get fewer miles to the gallon. A dirty filter also can rob an engine of power. Drivers may notice sluggish acceleration.

Air filters also can get so dirty that the engine stalls completely. But such a problem only develops after considerableneglect. Air filters may not need to be replaced at each and every oil change service call. Many technicians advise replacing the filter every 8,000 miles. However, driverswho live in particularlydry and dusty regions may need to replacefiltersmorefrequently. Mechanics can often detect when an air filter needs to be replaced. If he or she notices the air filter is particularly dirty, then it’s probably time to replace it. Replacing the filter is a relatively inexpensive repair for the amount of performance and peace of mindanew filter provides.

We are putting a healthy and yummy spin on caramel sauce for dipping your apples! We are using dates in this SUPER EASY recipe. Ask an adult to help you make this.

What are dates?

Dates are the fruit of the date palm tree, which is grown in many tropical regions of the world. They are chewy with a sweet flavor and are a good source of fiber, potassium, iron, and antioxidants. Eating dates can help improve digestive health, lower cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation, and support healthy brain function.

Fun Facts recipe

The first cookbook written in English was “The Forme Of Cury,” compiled by chefs of King Richard II in 1390.

1950s: Invention of the caramel apple A Kraft Foods employee, Dan Walker, was credited with this delicious caramel dunked apple treat.

16 Medjool Dates, pitted

¾ cup unsweetened plant-based milk

1 tsp sea salt

1 tsp vanilla extract

Add all ingredients (starting with the milk) into a high powered blender or food processor and blend until mixture is smooth and no date chunks are detectable. Add more milk, 1–2 tablespoons at a time, if needed to help the blending process or to thin the caramel to your liking. Use immediately or store in the fridge for later.

The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale. I’ve never thought to be frightened of it.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

What Prompted the Discontinuation of Fen-Phen?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 71-year-old healthy female who has struggled with my weight all my life. In the ‘90s, I thought I had finally found the solution in fen-phen. It was like a miracle! It took all the nagging thoughts of food out of my brain. My question is, with all the drug ads on TV every day blithely showing the many side effects leading up to -- and including -death, why can’t we use fen-phen? I worked in a hospital where a very large number of employees were taking it with great results. I never heard a hint about anything that could affect someone’s health.

Also, I talked to many of the other patients at the doctor’s office where I was receiving it. Everyone was overjoyed with the results. I had no temptations and no constant yammering in my brain to eat something. As I said, it was a miracle. I felt like a normal person. So, why are all of these drug companies allowed to advertise their products, but one drug that truly worked had to get snatched away from us? -- M.H.

ANSWER: Fen-phen was a combination of fenfluramine and phentermine, which was approved for use in 1986. Approximately 18 million prescriptions were written for this medicine until 1987, when an association was made between the use of fen-phen and valve diseases of the heart. These cases were reported with fenfluramine or with the related dexfenfluramine alone, but never with phentermine alone. (Phentermine remains on the market.) Approximately 150 cases were reported.

Subsequent studies estimated that seven out of 10,000 people who took fenfluramine or fen-phen for less than four months developed valve disease, while 35 in 10,000 people who took fenfluramine or fen-phen for more than four months developed valve disease. They were compared to people who either took phentermine alone or did not use a weight-loss medicine.

The U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration determined that the risk of valve disease (some being severe enough to prompt valve replacement surgery) was too high, so the FDA asked manufacturers to remove these drugs from the market. I fully understand your perspective. Some people are willing to take the risk of a side effect because the benefit of the medicine is so great. In my opinion, people should have the option of making their own decision, but in this case, the FDA felt that the risk was too high.

I have not seen a medicine for weight loss as effective as fenphen until recently, when semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, not yet approved for weight loss) became available. Just as you say, many of my patients report that they were able to easily control their eating while on these medicines, and as of the time I am writing, there have not been any serious adverse effects of taking these drugs, although there are plenty of milder effects.

However, these medicines only work when you continue to take them, and stopping them generally results in rapid regain of the weight that was lost. It’s important to realize that if you take a weight-loss drug, you’re making a commitment to a long-term treatment.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

Quality Sleep

To help you feel your best and sleep more soundly, try the following tips: Take a shower – About 90 minutes before bedtime, take a hot bath or shower. This will help to reduce muscle tension & accelerate sleep onset. Create an electronics curfew – The blue light from your favorite electronic devices interrupts your ability to relax and fall asleep. Don’t use your smartphone, tablet and other digital devices for one hour before bed.

Stretch to relax – Stretching for 10-15 minutes before bed will help reduce muscle tension. Turn down noises and do some gentle stretches to relax the muscles and mind.

Set a wake-up schedule – Try to wake up at the same time each morning, even on the weekends. This will help keep your internal clock ticking correctly so you can fall asleep more quickly and sleep deeply.

Embrace natural light – About 15 minutes of sunlight each morning will help reset your circadian rhythm so you can rise more naturally and then sleep better in the evenings.

Brighten your family smiles!

WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION?

Although the cause of depression remains a mystery, certain distinguishing factors are common among those who have the condition. People with clinical depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. In addition, naturally occurring brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters likely play a role in depression. The Mayo Clinic states changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment.

In addition to biological factors in the brain, hormones can impact rates of depression or even trigger it. These hormone shifts may be a leading reason why women have higher incidence rates of depression than men. Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have the condition. Therefore, those with a family history of depression may be more likely to get it than those without such a connection.

PAW’S CORNER

Cats get allergies too!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat, Tushy, sneezes several times a day, and her eyes water almost nonstop. is has been happening for a couple of weeks. She didn’t seem to have this issue before. My local veterinarian’s office is booked up for another two months, so I’m not sure what I can do in the meantime. Can you help? -- Harriet

DEAR HARRIET: It sounds like your cat is suffering from an allergy to something in her environment. at could be airborne irritants like pollen, dust or molds. Or, it could be a reaction to something in her food.

You can try to figure out what’s causing her reaction in a couple of ways. First, dust and clean your home thoroughly, and consider adding an air purifier with a HEPA filter in the room that Tushy spends the most time in.

Next, try a different brand of pet food for a couple of weeks to see if that makes any difference. Some cats are sensitive to certain ingredients in pet foods, and because those ingredients vary from brand to brand, it’s difficult to figure out which one is causing the allergy.

When Tushy is able to see the veterinarian, bring along your notes about her symptoms and what effect, if any, the environmental and dietary changes above had on improving her condition. e vet can offer additional treatment and support, such as adding essential fatty acids to her diet or prescribing a steroid to help with her symptoms.

In the meantime, monitor Tushy’s symptoms closely. If they suddenly get much worse, or if she becomes lethargic, vomits frequently or shows other signs of serious illness, take her to an emergency vet immediately.

GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR

According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.
