PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Keeping a car waxed and sealed can help maintain a durable exterior finish. This includes not only the paint, but the rubber and vinyl parts of the car’s exterior. Winter is a good time to switch to a heavy-duty synthetic wax that can shield against water and road salts. High-quality sealants can be used on bumpers, trim and rubber door seals as added protection. Speak with an automotive retailer or even the car dealership if you are unsure which products will make your car’s parts most durable for winter weather. Do not stop washing your car just because the weather is cold. Slushy, wet roads and snow-melting salts can speed up the formation of rust or other decay on the undercarriage of the vehicle. These materials will need to be periodically cleaned off. Flush the underside of the vehicle whenever possible, taking advantage of any dry, slightly warmer days.

Having breast tissue that is dense on a mammogram is a factor in breast cancer risk. The level of risk depends on how dense the breast tissue is. Women with very dense breasts have a higher risk of breast cancer than women with low breast density. Increased breast density is often an inherited trait, but it may also occur in women who have not had children, have a first pregnancy late in life, take postmenopausal hormones, or drink alcohol.

DID YOU KNOW ? Before saying “ so long” to yard w ork at the end of autumn, homeow ners should remove thatch from their law ns. Thatch is dead grass that’s often identifiable by its yellow ish tint, and this dead grass, if left to loom in the law n over the w inter, can block air and moisture from making its w ay into the soil. That can make it difficult for a law n to recover come the spring and may even c ost homeow ners a substantial amount of money to address w hen w inter finally skips tow n. W hen removing thatch, resist the temptation to rake w ith lots of physical force, as raking too hard can harm the law n. Instead, commit to three or four easy passes w ith the rake, as this w ill collect the thatch w ithout damaging the law n. M any people rent a dethatcher from a nearby law n and garden supply store, and suc h a devic e c an make the process of removing thatch much easier. How ever, be sure to clean the machine before using it on your law n, as there is no w ay of telling w hat c ondition the previous renter’s law n w as in w hen heor she used the device. Failing to clean the dethatcher can spread disease from a previous renter’s law n onto your ow n, and that can prove another costly mistake come the spring w hen your law n is looking to rebound. If seeding the law n in early fall, w hich can be a great time to reseed, remove the thatch before laying dow n any new seed. If you w ait to remove thatch until after you have laid dow n new seed, then the law n likely w on’t benefit from the seed and you w ill likely just rake the new seed aw ay w hen it comes time to remove thatch.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Owner: Let Cats Roam Freely Outdoors DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Your point about cats being at grave risk outdoors is just silly. Are there some dangers? Sure, there are. Small dogs are subject to the same dangers, as well as all the other animals that live outdoors. Are you suggesting that we should keep all snakes, hedgehogs, frogs, mice and turtles inside at all times because it’s a dangerous world outside? I dare say not! There is always going to be a bigger animal outside. All animals are free. It is us, as humans, who put the boundaries on animals and cage them in. Do you think that cats didn’t exist centuries ago? Of course, they did! How do you think they survived? They learned how to survive. Is it important to help those animals in need of a comforting shelter, good food and lots of love? Yes! But please don’t cage in the freedom they need in order to survive for centuries to come. -Ellen I., via email DEAR ELLEN: Those are ... interesting points. You’re right, I do harp on the importance of keeping cats inside. And for that matter, small and large dogs. And, if they are being kept as pets, snakes, hedgehogs, frogs, mice and turtles. Why? Because it keeps them exponentially safer and healthier. Staying inside reduces the chance of getting ticks and fleas. It keeps them safe from attacks by other domestic animals, coyotes, as well as (in my neck of the woods, New England) packs of wild turkeys. Keeping cats inside protects other wildlife -- cats are hunters, and they love catching songbirds, hedgehogs, snakes, frogs, mice and turtles. Readers, what are your thoughts on this issue? * Now’s the time to install weatherstripping or caulk for fall and winter. To find drafts, try this trick: Light a taper candle and run it very slowly along the cracks of your windows. When you see the flame flicker, that’s where you have a draft leak. * A great use for those old knee-high stockings (no runs!): Stuff with a mix of crystalized kitty litter and scent-boosting beads you can find in the laundry aisle. Stuff these in stinky shoes to freshen and deodorize. The litter wicks away moisture from sweaty feet and deodorizes, and the scent boosters last for a good long while. * “Here is a sewing tip for your column: I prewash fabrics that tend to shrink before I use them to make clothing items. That way, the fit is more accurate.” -- G.V. in Indiana

Canandaigua Nonprofit Gives Back on Holidays and Every Day! B Y K I M B E R LY L O N G
Finger Lakes Treasure Trove (FLTT), located at 222 South Main St. in Canandaigua NY, is a non-for-profit organization and donation center created to support founders’ Joanne Moon and Jean Lansberry’s community. FLTT has been in operation for a little over five years and has had the opportunity to expand its store throughout the years until it is now nearly double its original size! The nonprofit works in conjunction with several local programs and charities to provide help to those in need. In fact, for several years, FLTT has worked with Colony Caregivers, an organization which focuses on trapping, spaying/neutering, and finding homes for feral cats. They frequently collect donations for this nonprofit and spread PSAs on their Facebook page about what to do if you find feral cats. CareNet Pregnancy Center and the Friendship House are among other local programs supported by Finger Lakes Treasure Trove. FLTT was birthed in 2016 thanks to the dedication and generosity of Joanne Moon and Jean Lansberry, two members of a local The Yellow Ribbon Program chapter. The Yellow Ribbon Program supports United States Veterans. Moon and Lansberry began by holding yard sales to raise funds for this program, and their yard sales continued to grow. After years of hard work and persistence, their efforts eventually turned into their dream come true when they were able to open the store we see today. Santa’s Helpers is by far the biggest event in which FLTT participates in each year. Last year, the nonprofit was happily able to assist over 100 families with presents. During this year’s event, the organization hopes to surpass that number by a long haul with its goal of assisting 250 families or more. This program is primarily run by the employees at the FLTT and the volunteers that are ready and willing to help as much as they can. At this time, donations of wrapping paper, tape, new or slightly used toys and pajamas, and any new volunteers are strongly encouraged and enthusiastically welcomed. The primary goal in this yearly event is to provide Christmas joy to those who may be struggling economically due to the many factors we see day to day. FLTT is also accepting family information and requests to be a part of this program. As Chelsea Terziani described this event, she mentioned, “It is often overlooked how these acts of kindness can impact someone, and we are grateful to be able to do this on such a large scale.” This is not the only way in which the nonprofit provides for its neighbors. At the FLTT store, there is a bin of various free items

Finger Lakes Treasure Trove owes much of its success to dedicated volunteers! (l-r) Jean Lansberry, Joanne Moon, Alexys Pentycofe including coats, hats, clothing, and other necessities that are available to those in need. The nonprofit also runs a food cupboard in the rear of their shop, which provides free food to anyone in need. Vouchers may be found at the Salvation Army that assist with finding specific items families may need, and these vouchers are honored at Finger Lakes Treasure Trove. This store does so much for their community, and those involved love every moment of it. FLTT is always looking for compassionate volunteers and slightly used items that donors no longer need. The FLTT Santa’s Helpers program will be accepting gift materials and item donations, as well as cash donations, until December 4th. More information may be found on the FLTT Facebook page or by calling the store. Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com:

Bacteria Are to Blame for Stinky Shoes, Feet
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

---
20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: My nephew has foot odor. Even after showering, his feet have a bad odor. His shoes smell bad and have to be replaced often. What is the remedy for this problem? -- B.C. ANSWER: Foot odor is caused mostly by bacteria living on your feet. Bacteria thrive in warm and moist environments, so people who sweat a lot from their feet are at high risk. Some people are also colonized with particularly bad bacteria, such as Kytococcus (formerly Micrococcus), Corynebacterium or Dermatophilus. These bacteria do not cause disease, but they break down dead skin cells into unpleasantly smelly chemicals. A careful look at the skin on his feet may reveal small pits in the skin, especially around the heel, after a long day in socks and shoes. Treatment may include disinfecting skin solutions (such as chlorhexidine), antibiotics (topical erythromycin or clindamycin) and keeping the feet as dry as possible. This may require application of antiperspirants to the feet, either regular over-the-counter or prescription varieties. He also should wear lighter, more breathable footwear. Washing (and then drying) the feet several times daily and putting on new socks each time may also help during the treatment phase. Although ultraviolet-light shoe sanitizers exist, I’d recommend getting new footwear while trying to get rid of as much of the bacteria as possible.

BREAST CANCER IS THE SECOND MOST COMMON TYPE OF CANCER IN AMERICAN WOMEN. Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except skin cancer. Breast cancer is second to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in American women. However, deaths from breast cancer have decreased a little bit every year between 2003 and 2012. Breast cancer also occurs in men, but the number of new cases is small.

Rake leaves sensibly Power blowers and mulchers make fast work of leaves, but at the expense of the environment. Gas-powered devices discharge fuel exhaust into the air, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, reap the benefits of peace and quiet as well as exercise from manual raking. While raking, do not feel the need to remove every leaf. A certain amount of organic matter can be beneficial to the soil and even insulate the lawn somewhat. A leftover leaf here or there also may provide protection for insects and small animals. For example, many native bees spend the winter in tunnels in the ground, cracks in mortar, holes in dead wood, or within hollow stems, and they need lawn and garden litter to survive. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Just Hang Up! It’s time for us to be rude on the phone. There, I’ve said it. “Seniors are often targeted because they tend to be trusting and polite.” So says the FBI’s website page describing scams aimed at seniors. I’ve thought this for a long time, having done informal polls among friends, but now it’s official. Additionally, says the FBI, we’re targeted because we have savings, own a home and have good credit, which makes us attractive to scammers. We have the money -- they want it. But scammers are tricky. On that FBI page is a video of a former FBI director who, along with his wife, was targeted in a scam. Of all people who should have instantly realized what was going on, he was one. It was his wife, listening in the background, who made the connections. In the end, even after multiple ugly physical threats, the director didn’t cave in. The scammer went to jail, of course. But it points out how vulnerable we often are, especially when faced with sweet-talking scammers who are offering us a lot of money ... and who then switch over to threats if we don’t immediately do as they say and either send them money or give them access to our accounts. Whether it’s a tech support scam (“Your computer has a virus and we can fix it”) or a grandparent scam (“Your grandson is in jail and needs money for bail”) or a lottery scam (“You’ve just won $5 million”), it’s all the same -- a scam. To protect ourselves, we need to hang up the phone instantly when there is a likely scammer on the other end. Yes, when we were growing up, this kind of behavior would have been considered rude. But this is a whole new world, and it’s full of bad people who think we are trusting. We’re not, right? (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW?
When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Wren lesson You learn something new every day! Anyway, I did have fun watching the nest-building, even though the wrens never did occupy the nest in the Penny Saver tube. Now, I guess I can take down the note I posted and remove the twigs. I’m an incidental bird watcher, and I appreciate the info. By the way, thanks to all the carriers who avoided the Penny Saver tube!
S E V RA Hurrah for vaccinated healthcare workers! Thank you for getting vaccinated! It means so much to people, and it makes us more comfortable around our doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers. You did the right thing for your community. Kindness does matter I was so sad to hear about the child’s experience with some other children at the park. It’s possible it’s because of the Covid issues, but it’s sad that this happened. Our granddaughter only has one sibling who is much too old to play, so she’s mostly by herself and longs for children around her age with whom to play. Covid has found so many ways to destroy our lives. All this sadness just breaks my heart. I’m sure she will find friends soon as I believe most who live here are quite friendly. Our granddaughter is four, and she doesn’t give up on finding friends. She continues to seek friends when she’s at the parks, so they may meet sometime. Tell your granddaughter that she will make friends and may find a friend or two for life. Happy days are ahead. God Bless!

Awesome Doctor & Techs Words aren’t enough to express thanks and awesome job to the York Animal Hospital. My Doxie,Symon, went paralyzed in the hind quarters. I called the clinic, and we took him on an emergency call. When we arrived, they were ready for him. We had Dr. King. Awesome job, Dr. King! We know it was serious. With her help, advice, and therapy by her and by Symon’s mom, Symon has recovered a lot. He’s now walking and running. This all happened three months ago. What a great job Dr. King and staff--including registration and the check-in lady-did! This could have come out as a sad ending, but it is a happy ending. A huge thanks; you are all so awesome! God bless you all! - Symon’s Mom Good Samaritan On September 20th, I fell outside the Christmas Tree Shop in Henrietta. I would like to thank Dave who got me up and made sure I was all right. Thank you, My Good Samaritan, and may God always be with you. Thank you!
No dogs here! I have lived here for a very short time. I must say that this complex is a very good place to be. Everyone helps each other. There are a few complainers, but thankfully, there aren’t many. The complex manager is very efficient and very helpful. I’m sorry for the people who feel this place is “going to the dogs.” I like that we can meet each other, and we get to go to lunches thanks to the manager. I know that whatever problem I have or anything I may need has always been very quickly taken care of. So keep your complaining to yourself, and let’s all enjoy what we have. Zero, not hero You took yourselves from hero to zero! You aren’t an enemy; you just show you do not care. Any good healthcare worker would not want to hurt a patient in any way. By not getting vaccinated, you are possibly passing Covid on to them. What if you pass Covid to a child, and that child passes away? Are you ok with this? We aren’t! A good healthcare worker would not want this. Perhaps this job isn’t the one for you. Retire or quit please. I do not want unvaccinated people near me at any time!

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

BREAST CANCER TREATMENT Hormone therapy is a cancer treatment that removes hormones or blocks their action and stops cancer cells from growing. Hormones are substances made by glands in the body and circulated in the bloodstream. Some hormones can cause certain cancers to grow. If tests show that the cancer cells have places where hormones can attach (receptors), drugs, surgery, or radiation therapy is used to reduce the production of hormones or block them from working. The hormone estrogen, which makes some breast cancers grow, is made mainly by the ovaries. Treatment to stop the ovaries from making estrogen is called ovarian ablation. Hormone therapy with tamoxifen is often given to patients with early localized breast cancer that can be removed by surgery and those with metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread to other parts of the body). Hormone therapy with tamoxifen or estrogens can act on cells all over the body and may increase the chance of developing endometrial cancer. Women taking tamoxifen should have a pelvic exam every year to look for any signs of cancer. Any vaginal bleeding, other than menstrual bleeding, should be reported to a doctor as soon as possible. Hormone therapy with a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonist is given to some premenopausal women who have just been diagnosed with hormone receptor positive breast cancer. LHRH agonists decrease the body’s estrogen and progesterone. Hormone therapy with an aromatase inhibitor is given to some postmenopausal women who have hormone receptor positive breast cancer. Aromatase inhibitors decrease the body’s estrogen by blocking an enzyme called aromatase from turning androgen into estrogen. Anastrozole, letrozole, and exemestane are types of aromatase inhibitors. For the treatment of early localized breast cancer that can be removed by surgery, certain aromatase inhibitors may be used as adjuvant therapy instead of tamoxifen or after 2 to 3 years of tamoxifen use. For the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, aromatase inhibitors are being tested in clinical trials to compare them to hormone therapy with tamoxifen. Other types of hormone therapy include megestrol acetate or antiestrogen therapy such as fulvestrant. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
