Leaves cascading dow n from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. How ever, colorful and aw e-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from grow ing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But w et leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the law n through the w inter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons w hy so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall.

NORMAN ROCKWELL CHRISTMAS Certain holiday images have been ingrained in the minds of the public. Coca-Cola’s smiling bearded Santa Claus, in his now universally recognized red coat, helped create a model from which all other Santas evolved. And an early 20th century artist and illustrator helped to establish the feelings of the Christmas season for millions with portraits featured on the covers of The Saturday Evening Post. Norman Rockwell was born in New York City in 1894 and dreamt of becoming an artist when he was young. Rockwell received his first commission at age 17 and illustrated for Boy’s Life, the monthly magazine of the Boy Scouts of America. In 1916, Rockwell was hired by The Saturday Evening Post. When Rockwell began working for the Post, his humorous and deadpan depictions of American life tugged at the heartstrings of the public - even if they weren’t so adored by art critics.

Rockwell spent 47 years working for this iconic magazine. Rockwell produced paintings for the Post and other publications that depicted key images in American history, including Charles Lindbergh’s crossing of the Atlantic, the Moon Landing and World War II. However, some of Rockwell’s most beloved work pertains to his holiday scenes. Rockwell used real people as his models, and every detail in his reproduction paintings of photographs was fastidiously planned, say biographers. Over time, Rockwell’s paintings helped define an idealized vision of American life and Christmas celebrations. Even now people seek to emulate the merriment and magic exemplified in Rockwell’s imagery - from tired toy store clerks to a boy discovering Santa kissing his mom to the great holiday dinner. Rockwell produced 29 Christmas covers as well as greeting cards and other holiday scenes. The holiday season would not be the same without the work of artist Norman Rockwell. His influential images helped reflect a glorified version of American life and have helped to make the holiday season even more special for millions of people.

HANDYMEN/WOMEN FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency.

One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. Page 7

DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapes can save homeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertime but drop considerably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs. The term “ apple” comes from the Olde English w ord, “ aeppel.”

Empire Roofing & Siding 585-248-4949 HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources. When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, w hich is a problem w ith the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during w hich the heart can beat too fast, too slow or w ith an irregular rhythm. Atrial fibrillation, or AF, occurs w hen rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the atria, w hich consists of the heart’s tw o upper chambers, to contract very fast and irregularly. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, w hen a person is suffering from AF, blood begins to pool in his or her atria. W hile that blood pools in the atria, it is not being pumped completely into the heart’s tw o low er chambers, and this prevents the low er and upper chambers from w orking together effectively. Though AF does not alw ays produce noticeable symptoms, some people w ith AF experience chest pain or heart failure, especially w hen the heart rhythm is rapid. AF can increase a person’s risk of stroke, and it may surface periodically or become an ongoing problem that lasts for years.

Hyaluronic Acid Can Improve Joint Pain, but Isn’t Recommended

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Accepting New Patients.

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: A friend recommended hyaluronic acid for joint pain in my wrist and hand. I have been taking 180 mg once a day for a couple months now and have experienced notable success. I also feel that my neck pain and range of motion in my neck have improved. My question is, what exactly is hyaluronic acid? Is it safe, and are there any side effects I should be aware of? -- T.E. ANSWER: Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance composed of long strings of sugar. Because of this structure, it carries a great deal of water, so it acts as a shock absorber and lubricant for several places in the body, including the joints. Hyaluronic supplements are usually purified from chicken cartilage, but can also be produced by bacterial fermentation. The body makes about 5,000 mg of hyaluronic acid daily. Multiple studies on injections of hyaluronic acid have shown that it is only slightly better than a placebo at treating arthritis, especially of the knee. I have stopped recommending injection treatments to my patients with knee arthritis, as they are quite expensive. Oral hyaluronic acid, however, is inexpensive. There have been several small studies showing benefit (again, mostly for the knee rather than the neck), but I couldn’t find any well-done large studies that were convincing. There is very little harm from hyaluronic acid. None of the studies I’ve read found any serious side effects; however, that doesn’t mean it is completely safe, since supplements aren’t regulated the way prescription medicines are. But I can conclude that oral hyaluronic acid is possibly effective and probably safe for treatment of osteoarthritis. The studies have mostly used doses in the 100-200 mg range, but I have seen supplements for sale that have 20 mg or less of hyaluronic acid. I’m glad you are taking a similar dosage to what is shown to be effective.

KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

He loves company, especially if they come with toys or big tools. He likes watermelon, rye toast, Ritz crackers and going to McDonalds for French fries. Behaving well around service animals DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you kindly remind your readers that service animals and companion animals are not there for other people’s amusement? Too often, people who see a service dog in public will rush up and try to pet the dog or even hug them. Please educate them on the proper etiquette when they see a service pet. -- Janine D. in Syracuse, New York DEAR JANINE: Thank you for this timely reminder. Service animals are highly trained to provide assistance to their owners for specific health or mobility issues. Companion animals provide crucial emotional support to owners as well. With any pet, it’s not just good manners to ask before approaching or trying to touch them. It’s also a safe way to interact with pets and their owners. This is especially important with service and companion animals. They’re doing a job when out in public. For example, seizure alert dogs are trained to detect an approaching seizure and will gently warn their owners to get to a safe place. Mobility assistance dogs help owners maintain their balance, or with tasks like pressing buttons and opening doors. It isn’t always evident that they’re working, either. For example, you may see an autism support dog sitting or lying next to their owner. They’re not off duty; they’re helping their person stay calmer in a social setting. Some good behaviors around service animals include: -- Speak to the owner/handler, not to the animal. -- Don’t touch, talk to, feed or handle the service animal. -- Guide/service dogs have the right of way. DID YOU KNOW ? The origins of Veterans Day can be traced to the ending of World War I nearly a century ago. Know n at the time as “ The Great War,” World War I officially ended on June 28, 1919 w ith the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in France. But the fighting had actually ended seven months earlier w hen an armistice betw een the Allies and Germany w ent into effect on November 11, 1918. The follow ing November United States President Woodrow W ilson declared November 11 “ Armistice Day” in honor of the cessation of the hostilities, and the day became a federal holiday in 1938. That act w as amended in 1954 after veterans service organizations, in recognition of the efforts of soldiers w ho fought in World War II, asked that the day be renamed “ Veterans Day” so it honored all soldiers and not just those w ho fought in World War I.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE Space: Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

How to show your support for veterans

S

upporting veterans is a worthy endeavor at any time of year, though such efforts tend to be more prominent in November. Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11 in honor of the millions of individuals across the United States who are military veterans. The day coincides with holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other countries and also honor military veterans. There’s no denying that veterans need the support of the people whose freedoms they protect. According to a 2021 study from researchers at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, the percentage of veterans with disabilities is significantly higher among post-9/11 veterans (40 percent) than it was with veterans from previous eras (25 percent for Gulf War I veterans and 13 percent for veterans of previous wars). Veterans can benefit from support legislated by elected officials in Washington, D.C., but there’s also many things ordinary citizens can do to show how much they appreciate the sacrifices veterans and their families have made and will make in the years to come. • Visit wounded veterans. The United States Census Bureau reports that more than one-third of the nearly 3.8 million men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces since September 2001 have a service-connected disability. Many of these individuals are fighting to overcome physical injuries sustained while on active duty. Individuals who want to show their support for veterans can contact their local Veterans Affairs (VA) facility to arrange a visit to wounded veterans. Such visits can lift veterans’ spirits and reassure them that their sacrifices are both acknowledged and appreciated. • Support legislation that supports veterans. Though it might seem like a no-brainer, legislation to support veterans often faces an uphill battle to get passed. By supporting legislation that ensures veterans get the support they need, individuals can send a message to veterans that they haven’t been forgotten and that the very democratic principles they fought to protect are alive and well. Citizens can write letters to their elected

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

officials, urging them to support veteran-friendly legislation, and raise awareness of bills and laws through social media. • Help raise awareness about homeless veterans. Data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates that approximately 40,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. But that figure doesn’t tell the whole story, as the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans notes that, over the course of a year, roughly twice that many veterans experience homelessness. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) believes that programs to assist homeless veterans should focus on helping them reach a point where they can obtain and sustain gainful employment. In addition, the NCHV feels that the most effective programs are community-based, nonprofit, “veterans helping veterans” groups. Individuals can offer their support to such groups through financial donations or other means so they can continue to ensure no veteran sleeps on the street. Veterans Day is a time to show veterans that their service and sacrifices are not taken for granted. Visiting wounded veterans and supporting efforts to ensure veterans get what they need to live full, healthy and happy lives is a great way to send the message that veterans are appreciated.

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS Make things easy for customers: Cash was once king at community festivals and marketplaces, but the convenience of plastic and even touch-less payments has long since replaced hard currency as consumers’ preferred method of payment. In fact, a recent study from Visa found that contact-less payment usage in the United States grew by 150 percent between March 2019 and March 2020. Card readers are inexpensive and easy to use. Businesses can still accept cash payments, as accepting both cash and card increases the chances of making more money.

Lorraine Slomovic: A Trailblazing Nurse Anesthetist’s Journey Through Service BY SUZIE WELLS

D

aughter of a Marine, Lieutenant Colonel Lorraine Slomovic is a local legend known for her dedication, service, and her profound commitment to others. Her illustrious career as a retired US Army nurse anesthetist (known as a 66 Foxtrot) spans two decades, leaving an indelible mark in the field. Lorraine joined the reserves to fund her anesthetist education, but stayed on through five deployments over twenty years, supporting her team along the way, often on a moment’s notice, despite four children at home. Lorraine served with the 1982nd Fast Forward Surgical Team (FFST), embedded with a special forces team, offering medical backup for the frontline, providing timely access to surgery for wounded soldiers. The concept arose after the Persian Gulf War, recognizing the need to expedite life-saving procedures. Lorraine, along with her team, operated in a mobile capacity, carrying essential equipment on their backs and setting up in a variety of facilities wherever they were needed. The team’s impact was profound, resulting in a substantial decrease in fatality rates. Lorraine’s story also sheds light on the unique challenges faced by reservists. Despite the support on a regular / full-time / career military base, reservists face a variety of emotional challenges. Being away from family was hard, especially with small children in a time before cell phones, when satellite phone calls provided disappointingly sparse communication with her loved ones. And Lorraine says activation on a moment’s notice once meant she scrambled in the four days’ notice to receive urgent dental care before deployment. Military families make sacrifices for the sake of the missions, and Lorraine’s was no exception.

Lorraine’s deployments such as in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom were a blend of duty and cultural exchange. Her favorite moments were the interactions with the Iraqi people. Beyond the headlines and news reports, she and her teammates relished time interacting with the women and children of the area. They for instance provided medical supplies to women and children’s hospitals, reinforcing the shared humanity that transcends borders, that people everywhere have dreams, goals, family, friends, the same sort of life that we have. She says learning a bit of the language and interacting with the people was such a joy after the trauma of treating the wounded warriors. The relentless nature of Lorraine’s deployments took a toll on her mental well-being. Living day after day in constant danger and the need for self-defense left a mark. The experiences she faced in Iraq were traumatic, underscoring the importance of mental health

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

support for veterans. She says Bloomfield and Canandaigua have great programs such as Wounded Warriors for veterans and military families, but she has suffered PTSD since deployment. After her full retirement, Lorraine remained active in endeavors close to her heart. She initially got involved with an online women’s veterans group, but found her greater purpose with her family and Mission Mustang, a program in which Army veterans collaborate with wild mustangs rescued from the Department of Land Management, now operated out of the Equicenter in Mendon. She also volunteers in anesthetist missions in countries such as Guatemala and Venezuela, offering her services for the greater good. In retirement, Lorraine cherishes moments with her grandchildren, but humbly reflects on the value of her career in the reserves. Though she relishes her career with Rochester General and Thompson Hospitals, she appreciates her experience helping around the world with the Army Reserves. She encourages prospective reservists to engage with recruiters from all branches to fully understand options and opportunities available. She says the military is a great way to get an incredible education and see the world. She says, “I never thought I’d be in Cairo, Baghdad, Italy. Join the Army and see the world, as they say.” She tells of her nephew who joined as an infantryman after 9/11, learning how to make and run generators, and in civilian life, he is now an integral part of a lucrative civilian company. In the military, you learn very useful tools and trades, she says. Lorraine Slomovic’s story is a testament to the power of service, resilience, and the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many. Her legacy serves as an inspiration for generations to come, reminding us all of the potential we hold to make a difference in the world. Love to write? Kudos to Honeoye Central PTA On Friday, October 27th, the Honeoye Central PTA hosted a Trunk n Treat in the parking lot in front of the school. Weather was ideal and so, so many turned out with their children to trick n treat. Thank you to the PTA, the parents that had their vehicles decorated, Richmond Recreation Department, and to the Richmond Fire Department, who all were passing out treats to the many, many children that came. The Honeoye Community should be proud of themselves for making that night perfect from start to finish. Looking forward to next year.

Taunting Neighbors I clean up the leaves by our property line. The neighbors come through after I clean and push their leaves into the area I just cleaned, on my side of the property line. They do this repeatedly every single year, sometimes several times a week. Every time I clean they purposely push their leaves into my yard. They do it solely to taunt me. Guess what, ladies? I’m not stooping to your level. Blow all your leaves into my yard. I don’t care. The joke is on you. Your behavior reflects on you. Not me. Speeders To all the drivers that speed down [local road] with their loud vehicles, get a life. We have walkers and bicyclists who walk and ride all day on this road and you are endangering them along with other drivers who obey the law. You think your loud vehicles are cool, but guess what, they are not. So why don’t you go hang out in the kiddie park where you all belong because none of you should have a license. Hopefully the police will read this and start handing out tickets on [local road] and stop you morons from injuring someone or god forgive KILLING THEM.
