THE HISTORY OF BLACK FRIDAY
Downtown Clifton Springs
“Black Friday” The term “black Friday” was originally associated with gold prices and manipulation on the part of speculators Jay Gould and James Fisk. This scandal occurred in September 1869. Commodity prices plummeted 50 percent as a result, and the term “black Friday” was coined to refer to that drop.
Just off Route 96 November 27: Small Business Saturday Enter Nov. 27th at various businesses to win $250 in Clifton Springs Gift Certificates Redeem at 20+ Locally Owned Businesses ~ Great Variety!
The phrase “black Friday” also became famous for all the wrong reasons in 1966. Philadelphia police used it to refer to the Friday traffic jams and crowding in downtown stores from tourists and shoppers who flooded into the city in advance of the Army-Navy football game held the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. Bigger crowds and rowdiness contributed to long hours and stressful shifts for local police.

Sprinkle evenly over the blackberry filling. Bake until the streusel is browned and the fruit is bubbling, about 25 minutes. Let the tart cool until it can be handled, then remove the pan sides and place on a platter. Serve warm or at room temperature, with chantilly cream on the side. Chantilly Cream 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon granulated sugar Put the cream, vanilla and sugar in a bowl and whip by hand with a whisk or with an electric mixer on medium speed until soft peaks begin to form. The cream should hold its shape but still be very smooth. Tis the Season

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY Shopping local is more important than ever this year! Unique, local goods await in deliberately uncrowded shops, which give you the space and time you need to browse. Shoppers can also choose the convenience of curbside pick-up for their community-friendly purchases, often with a “touchless” option. So, move over, Amazon! Local business owners, our friends and neighbors, are once again open and more convenient than ever.
community, compared to the zero to $0.01 returned with an online retailer.
Need a little more convincing? Check out these stats!
• Finally, local businesses are much more likely to be customers of local service providers, including accountants, wholesalers, farmers, lawyers, contractors, grocers, printers, plumbers, welders, electricians, and more!
• Each dollar you spend purchasing from a local, independent business returns at least $0.65 to your local
• Online big-box retailers sometimes force local companies out of business. In return, with fewer businesses to offset community costs, local tax burdens fall increasingly on community residents. • Displaced corporate businesses donate less than half as much per sales dollar to local non-profits, events and teams compared to small businesses.
Get in on the Cyber Monday action and keep your dollars local when you visit us at GVPennySaver.com! Local businesses have just the gifts, services, and goods you are looking for this holiday season! The term “ apple” comes from the Olde English w ord, “ aeppel.” DID YOU KNOW? Designed to serve as the unofficial kickoff to the holiday charitable giving season, Giving Tuesday is celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving in the United States. While events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become incredibly popular among holiday shoppers looking for great deals on gifts for their loved ones, Giving Tuesday aims to capitalize on the holiday spirit of giving by celebrating philanthropy and promoting charitable giving. Giving Tuesday began in 2012 and was the brainchild of the team at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at New York City’s 92nd Street Y, which has brought people together around the values of service and giving since 1874. Nonprofits, civic organizations, for-profit businesses and corporations, individuals, and families have participated in Giving Tuesday since its inception. In 2015, with the cooperation of donors, volunteers and organizations in 71 countries, the Giving Tuesday movement raised nearly $117 million. More information about Giving Tuesday is available at www.GivingTuesday.org.

(585)226-6285 5888 Marshall Road, Avon STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Had Georgie Fletcher of Australia never signed on to play the mobile game “Words With Friends,” her husband, Simon, might be dead. Georgie struck up a friendship via the game’s chat feature with frequent opponent Beth Legler from Missouri. One day, Georgie told Beth that Simon hadn’t been feeling well. Beth relayed his symptoms to her husband Larry, a doctor, who insisted that the Fletchers go to the hospital immediately. A 99% blockage was discovered near his heart, which, left untreated, would have certainly been fatal. * The process of things being stretched out and torn apart as they enter a black hole is called spaghettification. * Our senses of taste and smell are cut by 50% and 20%, respectively, during flights, which is why airplane food has never tasted so hot. THE PERFECT TREE! Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition as we now know it in the 16th century when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree. Walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles.

After freshly cutting the trunk, pour in the warm sugar water. Continue to add fresh, cool, plain water to the tree stand afterward.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Realizing that surgical antiseptics were marketable to just a small group of professionals, the makers of Listerine began to market the product as a floor cleaner -- as well as a cure for gonorrhea. While we won’t necessarily vouch for the latter, in a pinch, just add a capful for every gallon of water and mop away. Other uses include dandruff elimination, deodorant, a numbing agent for toothache pain and tick removal. * A 1938 issue of “Mademoiselle” magazine had a handy bit of advice for college gals seeking suitors: have your mom send you some flowers to trick all the boys into thinking they have competition. No word on whether it worked. * Ferdinand Demara, aka “The Great Impostor,” posed as a surgeon aboard a Navy destroyer in the Korean War, where he was forced to operate on 16 people. He proceeded to speed-read a textbook on general surgery and was able to successfully perform all the operations without losing a single patient. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire.

585-377-3222 EASY ‘GREEN’ THANKSGIVING IDEAS Thanksgiving is a holiday to give thanks and share special moments with family and friends. While the original Thanksgiving might have taken place during a time when food was sparse, nowadays Thanksgiving often involves excessive amounts of food, with more food ending up in the garbage than in celebrants’ bellies. The United States Department of Agriculture projects that Americans will throw away more than 200 million pounds of edible turkey meat this Thanksgiving holiday. And Thanksgiving typically ushers in a period of wastefulness, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says American households produce roughly 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than during the rest of the year. Reducing waste is a worthy goal year-round, but especially so during the holiday season. And accomplishing that goal can be done without sacrificing holiday traditions. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

When temperatures get especially low, pipes with water still in them can freeze and burst, potentially leading to significant water damage. When you no longer need to water the lawn and when temperatures get too cold to wash your car in the driveway, be sure to shut off the water supply to outdoor spigots and sprinkler systems. Once you do that, drain them so no water is sitting in the pipes when temperatures dip.

Whether homeowners have a handful of tools or an entire collection of equipment, proper storage of these items means the difference between staying organized and safe or having to waste time looking for tools and running the risk of injury. Tools often gravitate to other rooms of the house or become misplaced. When they’re brought out for use, tools may not be returned to the toolbox or shed, taking up residence in drawers or closets or just being left out in the open. Improper storage of tools also may create safety risks for the persons doing the renovation and other members of the household. The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that hundreds of thousands of injuries treated at emergency rooms are related to power tools and workshop equipment. While the majority of these injuries occur while using the tools, improper tool storage can still cause injury. By taking care of tools and keeping them orderly, homeowners can lengthen the life expectancy of their tools and reduce the likelihood of tool-related injury. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Thanksgiving Tip: “Let one person be responsible for putting prep dishes, pots and pans in the dishwasher while another prepares the bird and side dishes for the table. You will be halfway done with dishes by the time the meal is over.” -- M.A. in Washington * “Bake stuffing in muffin tins for individual servings. Also, if your family is anything like mine, we love the crispy parts, and everyone will get some this way!” -- W.G. in Mississippi * “If you host a large family holiday gathering and serve a lot of side dishes, try this trick to them hot while waiting for other items to finish in the oven. Simply cover the bottom of a clean ice chest with a few trivets or a couple kitchen towels, and set casseroles and oven-cooked meats inside. Most people use a cooler to keep things cold, but the insulation works just as well to keep hot things hot ... at least for a little while.” -- M.E. in West Virginia * “An oldie but a goodie, and certainly considerate of dear old Mom: In my family, you come to Thanksgiving dinner with your own plastic containers for leftovers. If you don’t bring your own, you don’t go home with tomorrow’s lunch. Mom instituted this rule after the first Thanksgiving when all the kids had moved out. We practically cleaned her out of Tupperware!” -- E.Y. in New Mexico * Recipe substitution: If you need 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice, use 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ginger, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
New Dog Has Appetite for Doggie Door Flap DEAR PAWS CORNER: Help! Our recently adopted dog “Mollie,” a medium-sized mixed breed, thinks the doggie door flap leading outside to the backyard is delicious. Rather than using it to go in and out, she grabs the edge, chews and tugs on it. She growls when she does this. And she insists that we open the back door for her to go out. How do we fix this? -- Mary T., San Antonio DEAR MARY: You’ll need to address this in two steps. First, you need to figure out if Mollie is chewing due to boredom or attention-seeking, or if she has separation anxiety due to trauma in her past. If she’s only chewing on the door flap and nothing else in the house, maybe there’s an old memory surfacing. Second, you’ll need to repair or replace the damaged flap and train Mollie to go in and out of it confidently. Here are a few methods: 1. Divert and distract: As soon as Mollie starts trying to chew the door, call her name to stop her and then distract her away from the door with something else that interests her, like a favorite toy or a treat. 2. Behavior training at the same time each day: Note when Mollie is most likely to start chewing on the door. Then, conduct 10 minutes of behavior training in basic commands. 3. Train Mollie to use the flap correctly: Once she’s responding well to basic commands, add “going thru the flap” to her training. The AKC has a great tutorial here: www. akc.org/expert-advice/training/ dog-not-using-dog-door/ and this trainer’s video shows the clicker-treat method: www.youtube. com/watch?v=-R_k4_UHDeA If these methods don’t work, consider a professional trainer to help identify and work through Mollie’s fears or bad habits. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Certain foods are synonymous with the holiday season. Thanksgiving turkey. Holiday cookies. Fruitcake. While those first two make mouths water. fruitcake rarely inspires stomachs to rumble in anticipation. But fruitcake is more than just something to go ignored on holiday serving tables. Fruitcake can be chewy, crunchy and wholesomely rich, making it something holiday hosts will be proud to serve to their holiday guests, who might just come away with a whole new appreciation for fruitcake.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
The Problem With Playing Pharmacist ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife has been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Doctors tried an electrical cardioversion, but it came back after a few days. She is taking metoprolol and Eliquis. We have read about the supplements red clover, turmeric, omega-3 and hawthorn. Should she discontinue the pharmaceuticals and take supplements instead? -- J.C. ANSWER: Please don’t do that, and let me explain why. Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal heart rhythm. The goal of treating it is first to relieve symptoms, such as fast heart rate and dizziness, and second, to reduce the risk of stroke. Blood clots can form inside the heart when the atria are fibrillating (a chaotic, non-coordinated muscle movement). Those clots can break off and go into the blood vessels of the brain, causing cell death and loss of function in that part of the brain. That’s a stroke. Your wife is taking metoprolol to slow the heart rate. Atrial fibrillation causes the ventricles to go too fast, causing a sensation of fast heart rate and palpitations. Metoprolol, a beta blocker, protects the heart from damage from a too-fast heart rate, in addition to relieving symptoms. Apixaban (Eliquis) is a powerful anticoagulant, reducing the risk of clot formation. Red clover is usually used in herbal medicine for its estrogen-like activities. Unfortunately, estrogens INCREASE clot risk, so this herbal medicine absolutely should not be used by someone at risk for clots. Sweet clover hay is the source of warfarin (Coumadin), another often-used anticoagulant in people with atrial fibrillation: This may be the source of confusion. However, warfarin needs to be dosed precisely, with frequent blood-level checks. Turmeric is an antioxidant that does have some mild anticoagulant properties. However, it is not remotely powerful enough to do the job of protecting your wife adequately from stroke. Omega-3 fish oils were once thought to reduce risk of atrial fibrillation; unfortunately, a 2013 study showed no benefit. Hawthorn has two potential benefits: To a slight extent, it acts as a beta blocker (like metoprolol) as well as an anticoagulant. However, no trials have proven its effectiveness. It may interfere with both her medicines. The metoprolol and Eliquis have much more safety data.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Think about baking foods. Baking is handy for more than breads and desserts. Baking is one method of cooking that may not require the addition of fat. Meats that are baked can be placed on top of a rack, so that excess fat drips off and is contained in the bottom of the pan.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Foreign Radio Stations and Language Lessons Here we are, still stuck mostly at home for another winter. Looking for ways to get out, even if it’s only mentally, I’ve discovered internet radio. It’s easy to get started. I went to Radio.net (with 33,000 stations around the world) and on a whim I typed in Ireland for a search function. That got me 15 stations in Ireland. I tried Canada, and that netted me 44 stations. Searching for France, I found 798 stations. I went with a French talk show aimed at seniors and have been able to test the free French lessons I’ve been taking online with Duolingo. If you get hooked on listening to the radio on your computer, you might consider investing in a good pair of speakers. I prefer the wired speakers, as opposed to struggling with Bluetooth connections, and a decent set can be had for less than $25. I’m still using a pair of 3-inch cube speakers with a very handy volume button that I purchased seven years ago. As for the free French lessons on Duolingo (duolingo.com), I’ve decided to start again at the beginning. There are four goal levels: casual, regular, serious and intense, meaning 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes per day of instruction. Now that I’ve found that French talk show, not to mention all the other 797 French stations, I’m going to get more serious about learning French. On Radio.net there was an offer to get a free phone app at the App store or on Google Play, but you can just click the green arrow for connection. One thing to keep in mind about radio apps for phones or tablets -- they do use data. If you’re on a cellphone plan, make sure you are using Wi-Fi, or be aware of how much data you are using. You can always listen on the computer. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY
HOW TO M AKE THANKSGIVING DINNER HEALTHIER Focus on fruit for dessert. Thanksgiving dinner is usually follow ed w ith a decadent spread of desserts. These pies and cakes can be delicious but laden w ith calories. In lieu of traditional fare, serve poached fruits sprinkled w ith a little brow n sugar and oatmeal for a tasty and healthy dessert. Low -fat sherbet, fresh fruit salad and rice pudding also make for healthier desserts.
Tricia Solt
Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

RESILIENCE: A TIMELY THANKSGIVING TRADITION BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
he days have grown shorter. Browning leaves of red, orange, an gold rustle as they are and bl blown by breezes that bite, an the palest of frosts and appear overnight only to ap melt away at sunrise. me Throughout the country, families are preparing to fa gather over tables full of turkey, squash and stuffing, carrots and cranberry jelly, mashed potatoes and marshmallowed yams, plump biscuits, and pumpkin pies. Thanksgiving Day has arrived, wafting in on mouthwatering [turkey] wings. Amid an ongoing pandemic, it is time to find gratitude once again. This Thanksgiving, after “two weeks to flatten the curve” became nearly two years of riding the rollercoaster, there is a strain which can be felt. Almost two years of pandemic pressures, economic challenges, political conflicts, and semi-isolation have left their mark. Pandemic realities continue to shape our everyday lives; whether long-term or short-term remains to be seen. As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, perhaps it is time to expand our focus from simple survival to include how we will survive. Thanksgiving Day itself is a holiday born and baptized in adversity. Its inception took place among those Pilgrims who survived their first year upon New England shores: only 51 of the Mayflower’s 102 passengers and about half the crew. It was proclaimed and celebrated on the heels of the American Revolution, when President George Washington declared Thursday, November 26th, 1789, to be “a Day of Publick Thanksgivin.” It rang out over the fierce battles of the American Civil War in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln issued a declaration asking that all citizens observe “a day for National thanksgiving, praise, and prayer.” Finally, in 1941 as World War II raged on, Thanksgiving Day was established by the Congress of the United States as a national holiday to take place each year on the fourth Thursday of November.
During the Spanish Flu pandemic, New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Royal S. Copeland was faced with many difficult—and at times controversial—decisions while working in the interests of public health. In one of his letters, he wrote, “When the history of the influenza in America is written, you will not be ashamed of the care afforded to this metropolis.” Dr. Copeland’s ability to imagine a point after the pandemic in which the pandemic itself was in the past is both striking and key. Dr. Copeland understood that the Spanish Flu pandemic would become a chapter in American history…and it has. One day, whether one month, one year, or five years into the future, the Covid-19 pandemic will be a chapter in American history. Will we be able to look back and say that we are not ashamed of how we cared for each other, of how we treated others in restaurants and grocery stores, on “It is time to social media and within our families? The fact that this pandemic, which now expand our focus touches every aspect of our lives, will from simple ultimately be a part of our nation’s past survival to include can put so much into perspective.
how we will survive.”
Meanwhile, how can one “vaccinate” the spirit against current stresses? Gratitude. Giving thanks for the many blessings we still enjoy redirects our focus from the negative to the positive. A gratitude lifestyle has been found to reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure and blood cortisol levels, increase feelings of well-being, and strengthen one’s ability to cope with challenging situations. This Thanksgiving season, consider taking some extra time to reflect on those blessings which mean the most to you. As you gather with family and friends, whether in person or virtually, share these blessings with each other and experience resilience through gratitude. After all, it’s a Thanksgiving tradition.
A common thread even more meaningful in the light of our present pandemic is the human resilience at each of these points in time as well as the decision to give thanks. Merriam-Webster has defined “resilience” as “the ability to become strong, healthy, or successful again after something bad happens.” If that doesn’t sound like a post-pandemic prescription, I don’t know what does! Merriam-Webster also defines “resilience” as “the ability of something to return to its original shape after it has been pulled, stretched, pressed, bent, etc.” For many, the last two years have left us feeling all of the above! Yet, it is this elasticity we so desperately need right now. It is one’s ability to endure extraordinary difficulties and challenges and yet remain the same sort of person they were before. Surviving this pandemic has been our necessary focus for so long; however, what can we do to ensure the “us” that survives is who we want to be?

HOMETOWN Thank you to all my supporters throughout Monroe County Legislative District 5 for your encouragement this election season. Through hard work, positive dialogue and inclusiveness, our vision for a strong victory became reality. As stated prior, promises made will be promises kept. I will work hard for all the residents of Legislative District 5 and for all of Monroe County. We have work to do, and I’ll begin as quickly as possible to understand the needs and set up an action register to begin prioritizing projects and subject matter. Our communities have similarities but are very different at the same time. I’ll do my best to learn about both the similarities and the differences to have the most positive impact I can. Thank you again for your confidence in me and let’s work together to move Monroe County forward. Rick Milne, Mayor – Honeoye Falls Monroe County District 5 Legislator – Elect Paid for by Friends of Rick Milne for Legislator.

S E V RA Farmers Farmers are dealing with muddy conditions this year. That may mean more grain wagons and trucks being loaded on the road. Farmers try hard to work quickly and keep traffic moving but please, be patient and safe around farm equipment! Thank a farmer today. Good news! In response to “Where are we headed” here is some good news. The unemployment rate dropped to 4.6% and 531,000 jobs were added in October! The infrastructure bill passed by both Democrats and Republicans last week will be adding millions of new jobs, and we will all benefit from repaired roads and bridges, lead free water lines, increased broadband and improved train travel. All those new jobs are certainly good news! I’m not sure where you shop, but I’ve found everything I need at all the main grocery stores in our area, both national chains and local grocers. If you’re finding bare shelves, perhaps you should try a different store or try purchasing online. There is little anyone can do about gas prices which fluctuate up and down based on the price of crude oil which is controlled by the global market. We all received help from our federal government during the COVID-19 shutdown, and we are still receiving it. I see much to celebrate! Also, it’s 61 degrees with sunshine in mid-November! Smile! Kindness I would like to thank the lady who left money for my groceries at the Batavia Aldi on November 8th. Bless you for your kindness.
Our government; our republic A recent 60 Minutes interview with an Andrew Sullivan spotlighted a terrible trend that is so prevalent in our politics today. Absolutely no dialogue, no discussion, no discourse, just “You’re wrong because you don’t think like me (or worse, my party).” Republican leader Mitch McConnell vowed that everything the Democrats do, his party would be against. Wow! That is not what our democracy or this country was built on. We had one of the greatest nations on earth because of our republic and the open exchange of ideas and ideologies, but we should all be extremely concerned as to where our United States of America is heading. Our politicians could use a vaccine that would cure their cruel and bitter criticism! Tipping your server To the table of six that went out to eat last Wednesday after a day of fishing at [local spot]: Nice of you to eat, drink and have excellent service and leave nothing for a tip. Servers do not make minimum wage and depend on their tips. Times are tough, and often establishments can’t find enough help, so the servers are working their tails off to give their customers a good dining experience. Please remember that when you are going out to eat. If you can’t afford to leave a tip, then eat at home! Holding the country hostage To “What An Idiot:” Actually, it’s not Joe Manchin holding our country hostage. It’s those who want to bankrupt the USA who are holding us hostage. If you’re so worried about the children, let’s not leave generations to pay for this legislation which is full of “pork.” As I recall, Joe Biden took naps during the all-important COP26 meeting. As for which Joe should be impeached, look no further than the top dog.
What a blessing! Thank to the gentleman who paid for my oil change at the Monroe Muffler in Geneseo. I don't know your name, but your act of generosity brightened a tough day. I will be sure to pay it forward when I can!

WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.
Calibration Technician
Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify.
Caltronix Inc. (www.caltronixinc.com) is seeking a physical/dimensional calibration technician to join our East Avon team. Caltronix Inc. offers competitive wages, three weeks’ vacation & holidays. Excellus health insurance and 401k plans are available.
Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits.
Please send or email resume to:
235 Middle Rd, Suite 100, Henrietta, NY 14467 pdulmage@caltronixinc.com
Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment.
FULL-TIME WAREHOUSE ASSOCIATES
For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working.
Anderson-DuBose has full-time employment opportunities for Warehouse Associates
“It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.”
Job entails order picking with electric pallet jacks as the primary tool, pallet stacking, and loading trucks. Must be capable of performing physical labor, lifting up to 50lbs. Must be able to work early mornings or late nights and a weekend day. The schedule is a 4-day work week with overtime during the season. Pay is $20.00/hour to start. EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE (NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities.
It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.” Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts. “I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.” To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www.choosework.ssa.gov.
