DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is

Body & Mind ____________________19

33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

HOW TO SUCCEED WITH YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION Be as specific as possible. In addition to being patient, being specific when deciding on a resolution can increase the likelihood that the successful pursuit of that resolution will have as positive an impact on your life as possible. For example, a nonspecific resolution to lose weight may be successful if you only shed a single pound. But men and women who resolve to lose weight typically want to lose more than one pound. By resolving to lose a predetermined and specific number of pounds, you might be more likely to commit to your goal, and more encouraged the closer you get to achieving that goal.

IT’S A NEW YEAR!

And a chance to let all of you know how much we appreciate your loyal support. We’re so inspired by the strength, compassion, and resilience we’ve seen all around us through a challenging year, and we’re proud to be a part of this caring community. As we begin anew in 2022,

Response to Foreign Aid I’m curious as to why you selected Israel to complain about when the U.S. sends 13.4 million dollars per day to Afghanistan, and this year announced that we would be sending Afghanistan an additional 64 million. Foreign Aid missing facts The aid sent to Israel is less than Afghanistan receives, yet a recent rant singled out Israel. 74% of aid to Israel is spent with USA companies. Therefore, the money is being given back to towns in the USA, which was the writer’s complaint. We also benefit every day from Israel’s technological innovations. Attacking Israel without sharing other relevant details is [wrong]. Rants should stick to local issues, like garbage cans and road maintenance. Turn signals The number of people using their turn signals while dropping off their little ones at the local elementary school is appalling. Zero. Zero parents signaled to other drivers their intent on where to drive while carrying their precious children in the car. If a parent were to pull out and cause an accident, that parent is going to come out of that car screaming at the other car because their 7 year old is in it and how dare they hit them, despite the parent being the one to pull out in front of the oncoming car without a warning of any kind. Turn signals exist for a reason. Please use them.

I love LeRoy I came from [local town] and moved to Leroy in 1994, and the rest is history!

Stolen American Flag I’m 85, a Navy Veteran and a worker in public service my entire life. I am a proud American and have always had an American flag flying from the front of my house. A few days ago, the flag was, for the first time in my life, stolen. Presumably whoever took it thinks of themselves as an upstanding patriot. It’s not the monetary value that counts, but the idea that stealing a flag that stands for the principles of honesty and honor is okay. It’s all very sad.

Left lane drivers Who’s never heard the saying, “Slower traffic stay to the right?” Obviously some drivers haven’t. I passed a pickup on the right because he was slower. Passed through a couple intersections and moved over into the left lane when my turn came up. I moved into the turn lane and turned. As he passed, he blew his horn. No, I didn’t cut him off. There was plenty of distance between us. He shouldn’t have been there in the first place let alone getting upset when I did have to slow to turn. A little hint for the pickup: If you’re going to be an idiot, don’t be one while driving your truck with your business name all over it. Christmas trees Another year, another price increase on Christmas trees. $54 for a tree? No thanks. I visited a tree farm on [local road] this year, and one of the owners admitted to me when one tree farm raises their prices they all do. Let me translate that for you. They don’t want competition, because competition drives prices down not up. The tree farms have been raising their prices at a year after year rate of $3.20. At that rate, given the current prices, you can expect to pay about $100 for your tree in 15 years. How much is too much for you? Getting your Christmas tree should be an enjoyable experience that doesn’t have to break the bank.

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR Get support or talk it out. Speaking about what you are going through and getting reassurance from other people can work wonders to strengthen resilience. When the desire to quit sneaks up, you can consult with a friend or consider a support group. For example, taking a group class at the gym may be a more effective motivational tool than working out solo.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

People who welcome cats into their homes can expect a companion for a long time, as cats can live up to 20 years or more. Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

DID YOU KNOW? Many people consider the Times Square section of midtown Manhattan the epicenter of North American New Year’s Eve celebrations. While there are plenty of places throughout North America to ring in the new year, few, if any, can compare to Times Square, where revelers have been celebrating the dawn of a new year for well over a century. According to the Times Square Alliance, New Year’s Eve was first celebrated in Times Square in 1904. But the New Year’s Eve ball, an iconic symbol of the holiday across the globe, did not make an appearance until 1907, when it descended from a flagpole atop One Times Square. Made of iron and wood, that first ball weighed 700 pounds and was outfitted with 100 25-watt light bulbs. One hundred light bulbs might have seemed like a lot back in 1907, but a century later the special ball made to mark the centennial celebration was illuminated with more than 32,000 Philips Luxeon LED bulbs, which organizers felt greatly increased the brightness and color capabilities of the ball. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Cat Voices Displeasure With Zoom Meeting Ban DEAR PAW’S CORNER: During the pandemic, my cat “Rusty” would jump into my lap or roam across my keyboard during Zoom meetings with the rest of my team. Everyone thought it was funny. Last month I was hired to work remotely for a new company. My supervisor told me the cat cannot appear on screen. If I put Rusty into the bathroom during video calls (I have a studio apartment), he yowls loudly until I let him out. What can I do? I need to keep this job. -- Jake V., Alexandria, Virginia

DEAR JAKE: Pets can be a lot of fun to introduce in casual business meetings, but they can’t always be present, especially if your boss has forbidden it. Here are some things you can try: -- Create a “go to work” routine. We tend to follow the same format every morning (wake up, drink coffee, get dressed, sit at our computer), so add two things to the routine: attention time with Rusty, and leaving for work. Give Rusty 10-15 minutes of undivided attention somewhere between coffee and getting dressed. Once you’re dressed, say “I’m going to work!” loudly, and ignore Rusty for several minutes. -- Make Rusty more comfortable when separated from you. Put his favorite cat bed, toys and drinking water into the bathroom when he’s sequestered. -- Teach “go away” signals. Make a hissing noise or snap your fingers when Rusty tries to jump up. -- Set up physical barriers around the desk, like sticky-side-up duct tape. -- Wear headphones during calls if Rusty continues to meow. -- Incorporate “attention breaks” during the day where Rusty gets your undivided attention, away from the desk. The more structure you can build into a remote workday, the better. If Rusty can count on a comfortable, sequestered space during meetings, plus regular attention breaks from you, he may settle down -- and save your job.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Lending a Helping Hand I’ve been looking at 2022, hoping to find some value in my time and money in this chaotic world we find ourselves in, a chaos that doesn’t show any sign of ending soon. Two new activities have found their way to my to-do list. For several months I’ve been buying a food donation card each time I shop at a certain grocery store. It’s not much, but I believe I can continue to do this. My goal is to make it through the year without missing one time. These cards are given to the local food bank, which can then use that money to buy food at a discounted rate. This has more financial benefit than if I purchased food at the regular store rate and delivered it to them. I know the food banks around here have been scrambling to keep supplies available, especially since they’re serving more families than ever before. Maybe my humble donation will help just a little bit. The other item on my new to-do list is probably the more valuable. I’ll be collecting groceries weekly for three very elderly people in the neighborhood. I learned that two of them had been ordering groceries for curbside pickup -- and taking taxis to go get them because they don’t drive. The third ordered her groceries for curbside, but has had them delivered. So, instead of the extra expense of taxi or delivery, I’ll pick up their orders myself. I did a test run with one to be certain there was no problem with me using someone else’s credit card to pay for the curbside pickup. The bonus is that these three neighbors, who had never met, now know each other and talk frequently. I understand that there has already been a bit of coupon swapping and recipe sharing. Maybe 2022 will be a good year after all. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

The first New Year’s celebration dates back 4,000 years. Julius Caesar the emperor of Rome, was the first to declare Jan. 1 a national holiday. He named the month after Janus, the Roman god of doors and gates. Janus had two faces, one looking forward and one looking back.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Less Mercury in Flu Shot Than in Can of Tuna

GLOBAL NEW YEAR’S TRADITIONS

---

Filipinos embrace round fruits for the new year. The custom includes gathering 12 different round fruits for each month of the year. The round shape symbolizes wealth and prosperity.

DEAR DR. ROACH: How much mercury is safe? -A.C.

ANSWER: The chemical element mercury exists in three forms: elemental mercury, which is the kind in thermometers; inorganic mercury, especially mercuric chloride; and organic mercury, including methyl and ethyl mercury. All of these have toxicities, but the types of toxicities are different for each, and the safe level depends on which type it is. Elemental mercury is dangerous primarily when it is inhaled, which occurs mainly in occupational settings. Accidental swallowing of the small amount of mercury in a thermometer has very low toxicity, but I still don’t recommend it. Inorganic mercury is seldom a problem, as it is almost never used these days in the U.S. and Canada. Most products containing this form of mercury have been banned. Methyl mercury is the major concern for consumers, as this is found in fish. It accumulates in the environment, and tends to be worst in larger fish, which eat the smaller fish and over their lifetime accumulate the methyl mercury, which was formerly used as a fungicide. The Environmental Protection Agency warns an average-size person not to exceed 70 mcg per day of methyl mercury: Below this dose, toxicity is unlikely. This translates to two to three servings of fish per week, but no more than one serving of highest-risk fish for methyl mercury per week. High-risk sources include most tuna, halibut and snapper. Ethyl mercury is significantly less toxic than methyl mercury, as it is removed from the body more quickly. There is no EPA recommendation for ethyl mercury levels. Ethyl mercury has been used as a preservative in vaccines, but it has been removed from all childhood and most adult vaccines. It is still used in some flu vaccines -- the ones in multidose vials: Singleuse vials do not need a preservative. The amount of ethyl mercury in a flu shot is less than the more dangerous methyl mercury found in a can of tuna. ***

DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR Practice self-control in all aspects of life. Some researchers believe that the self-control necessary to help people maintain their resolutions is like a muscle that needs to be exercised. When selfcontrol is revved up across many different activities, it’s easy to realize one particular resolution. For example, in an experiment at the University of Albany, researchers asked 122 smokers who were trying to quit to practice extra self-control for two weeks, either by avoiding sweets or by squeezing on a grip strengthener for as long as they could twice a day. Twenty-seven percent of those who were diligent about practicing their self-control exercise successfully kicked their cigarette habit in the following month, compared with just 12 percent of volunteers who didn’t maximize self-control.

HEAT THERAPY According to the Merck Manual, a reference book for physicians and patients alike, heat works against inflammation by increasing blood flow and making connective tissues more flexible. Heat also can be used to combat edema, a condition characterized by an excess of fluid in the tissues of the body. Upon application, heat can temporarily reduce pain and alleviate stiffness in the joints. Heat also may temporarily relieve muscles spasms. The Cleveland Clinic notes that heat can be effective at relieving pain associated with worn-away cartilage in the joints because it eases chronically stiff joints and relaxes tight muscles. In addition, moist heat can relax painful neck spasms linked to nerves or blood vessels in the head or pain emanating from muscles in the neck. Heat can be applied via hot packs, infrared heat, paraffin baths, and hydrotherapy.

CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE Arrange for transportation. If you need a car to get around on New Year’s Eve and plan to drink alcohol, arrange for someone else to do your driving for you. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * To save a pot of burning soup, remove from the burner and DO NOT stir. Pour the unburned contents into a new pot, while trying not to disturb the burnedon bottom of the pot. * Experts say that those who keep track of their nutrition and exercise are more likely to keep it up. This can be as simple as a pencil and notebook paired with a calorie guidebook, or one of the many great apps for your smartphone. In any case, set yourself up for success this year. You deserve it!

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

* After-Christmas sales are a great time to buy not only gift wrap (look for solid colors that you can use all year long), holiday cards and decorations, but also next season’s winter wear. Things like scarves and gloves can be great bargains. And even coats can go on sale. Take advantage -- especially if you have kids -- and buy up. -- A.K. in Tennessee * Want to include more produce in your diet? Sources say prep is the step that makes it work. Clean, chop, slice and otherwise prepare all your produce choices for the week on the day you shop. When it’s ready and waiting, you’re less likely to skip it in favor of something more convenient (and likely less nutritious). * “A pinch of salt tossed in the coffee grounds will cut the bitterness in lower-quality coffee. This is especially useful if you get a good deal on a can of coffee that’s not your normal brand.” -- P.L. in New Jersey

Happy New Year! Moving Forward in 2022 BY AMANDA DUDEK

A

fter nearly two pandemic years, it can be challenging to look forward to 2022 with a sense of hope and optimism. Pandemic protocols are constantly in flux. New and often seemingly conflicting information continues to stream across all forms of media. This continuing pandemic landscape can feel as unstable as shifting sands or ocean waves during a storm.

Family: We may not always agree with or get along with all our family members. However, the bonds of family are some of the strongest and most enduring ones we experience. With family, we find the shared experiences that help shape our identity as well as ongoing comfort and support.

Future: No matter the challenges of the present, there is always something new up ahead, always a bend in the road around which we cannot see. Another adage encourages us, “Nothing endures but change.” Reaching this future can be as simple as putting one foot in front of the other; that is, it is continuing on each day. Eventually, one day at a time, we will walk out of this together.

Like a storm, no pandemic lasts forever. Everything has its time. All the struggles of the present are temporary. No one knows when the pandemic roar will quiet into a seasonal growl, it is not eternal. Studies will continue. Understanding will increase, and vaccines and treatments will only continue to improve. Time, as the adage promises, will heal all “wounds.”

As we enter 2022, always remember that everything is temporary. Find your stars, your constants, and step boldly into the new year. All it takes is one step at a time.

But how does one navigate in the meanwhile? Since time immemorial, sailors have been navigating by the stars. With no land in sight on a changeable and trackless expanse, the stars remained a constant by which to find one’s way home again. In some ways, these pandemic years are like an ocean, and we have been swept out to sea. If we wish to find our way “home,” we must navigate by our “stars.” Although these stars are not always the same, some are true for many.

Faith: What we believe is central to who we are. These beliefs help us to make sense of the world around us as well as our experiences in it. They can help put even challenging experiences like a pandemic into perspective while offering hope, comfort, and guidance. Love to write? You could earn CASH when you share your original story, personal experience, community happening or school event with us! It may be featured on our popular website for all to see and even selected for print! NEW YEAR’S CELEBRATIONS ACROSS THE GLOBE London, England New Year’s waterfront celebrations are not exclusive to Sydney, as London also hosts celebratory fireworks displays along the River Thames. When the fireworks are finished exploding from the tower around Big Ben, one of the world’s most recognizable tourist attractions, the magic then continues at another of London’s famous landmarks, the London Eye. Fireworks explode from the famed ferris wheel as Londoners ring in the new year in style.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING TYPES OF FIREPITS FOR YOUR BACKYARD OASIS Wood firepit: As their name suggests, wood firepits burn wood, which may appeal to homeowners who already have wood-burning fireplaces inside their homes. Because they don’t require homeowners to tap into gas lines, wood firepits are generally easy to set up and install, and many homeowners prefer the aesthetic appeal of crackling wood and flames that’s synonymous with wood firepits.

Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all. While large homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help owners save money, require less maintenance, have smaller environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate “stuff.” Owners of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty. ●
