FACTORS THAT IMPACT AUTO INSURANCE PREMIUMS Auto insurance rates vary from person to person, even though it may seem like the offerings are the same. But no two drivers are the same, and certain factors may be affecting drivers’ auto insurance premiums without the motorists even realizing it. Recognizing which situations can increase or lower costs can help drivers get the best rates and coverage needed. Although it can be tempting to reduce the price of insurance by choosing lower amounts of coverage, there are other ways to make insurance more affordable. • Move. Insurers typically look at where a person lives when calculating rates. Those people who live in highly populated, urban areas likely will have higher premiums than others who live in more rural towns. That’s because greater population density often translates into more people on the road - and a greater chance for insurance claims due to fender benders or theft. By moving, a person may be able to cut rates. • Gender and age are factors. One can’t step into a time machine, but it’s helpful to know that growing a little older can lower insurance premiums. The financial advice source Money Crashers say that young men usually incur higher rates than young women because statistically men get into more accidents. However, as a person moves into his or her senior years, the roles reverse. Older women may see higher rates than men the same age. • Keep make and model in mind. The type of vehicle driven can affect insurance premiums. Certain insurance carriers will increase premiums on vehicles that are more susceptible to damage. Flashy sports cars or those that do not score as highly on vehicle safety ratings calculated by industry experts may result in high premiums. Vehicles that are desirable to car thieves also may cost more to insure. Researching vehicles prior to purchase and checking the rates for those cars or trucks with insurance companies can help keep costs low. • Commuters may pay more. Individuals who use a car for business or frequent commuting may pay more than people who drive less because statistically there is a greater risk for an accident, says State Farm. Reducing commute times can lower premiums. • Tie the knot. Insure.com says married couples have been found to be less of a risk to insurance providers statistically than those who are single. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that single drivers were twice as likely to be in an auto accident as married drivers. Combining policies also can help married people save. • Follow the rules of the road. Drivers who have moving violations, drink and drive or engage in otherwise risky behavior behind the wheel may see their rates soar. Insurance companies weigh factors such as driving record, age, locality, and more when assessing premium costs. Drivers have some room to get lower rates by knowing the factors that determine their premiums. GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
Page 4
SIGNS OF UNSAFE DRIVING IN OLDER DRIVERS • Delayed response to unexpected situations: Frequent close calls and narrowly avoiding collisions when other drivers stop suddenly indicate reduced response time. • Becoming easily distracted while driving: Aging drivers who are easily distracted pose a safety risk to themselves and other motorists. • Decrease in confidence while driving: Only drivers will know if they feel confident enough to drive safely, and it’s vital that aging drivers be honest with themselves. • Having difficulty moving into or maintaining the correct lane of traffic: Lane-assist technology can help drivers recognize how often they’re staying in the correct lane of traffic. • Hitting curbs when making right turns or backing up: Hitting curbs when turning or backing up indicates drivers may be having difficulty controlling their vehicles and/or seeing the road • Getting scrapes or dents on car, garage or mailbox: These signs also indicate drivers are having trouble controlling their vehicles. • Driving too fast or too slow for road conditions: This indicates drivers are not as alert to their surroundings as they need to be to stay safe on the road.

RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Confirm vehicle maintenance and inspections. Private individuals and some smaller ridesharing services drive fewer hours per week than many taxi companies. That means personal vehicles may be in better shape than taxis. Drivers must maintain their vehicles and have them inspected according to local regulations. Passengers can ask to see service records and should only accept rides in vehicles that appear to be in good repair.

Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

Fence Etiquette Prevents Disputes: There are certain things you must do and should do if you plan to erect a fence. Most people find neighbors appreciate being informed of any decisions you are thinking of making to the property that can affect their views or their adjoining property. Before drawing up fence plans with a contractor, talk to the neighbors on either side of your home and gauge their receptiveness to a fence. At this point, you may want to consider offering to make the fencing project a joint deal to save money should the neighbors decide to install a fence as well. Contractors will often discount if they have several customers doing an installation at the same time. Property owners can save by splitting the costs of the shared walls of the fence where their property lines meet.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Waiting Out COVID
An unscientific poll of senior friends and neighbors revealed just what we’ve accomplished during the past two years of this pandemic. The answer: not much. Mostly, it seems, we’ve been waiting. Waiting for it to be safe to shop in person. Waiting for our clubs and meetings to start up again. Waiting for a visit from family across the country that has feared bringing COVID to our door. Waiting for all the vaccines and boosters to do what they were supposed to do. Waiting to be unafraid again. In the beginning we were all for following the rules. We seniors are a tough bunch, and we know a lot. We have coping skills that got us through any number of crises life has thrown at us. But this pandemic has brought many of us to our knees. Each person in my humble survey could, when queried, point to the exact time when the tide turned in their mental health. It was the omicron variant and the additional vaccine booster, when it became apparent that COVID wasn’t going away soon. For me, a daily to-do list has come in handy. On a sheet of paper I have two columns: one work, one play. In the work column there are household tasks such as doing one load of laundry. In the play column are things like wiping the dust off the piano and learning a new song each week. On the back of the page are two more columns. One is a list of names, and somebody gets called every day. In the other column is an ever-lengthening list of things that are going right. This one is sometimes hard to fill out, but it gets done, even if it’s only notes like: Completed a crossword puzzle in seven minutes. Try it. Make your lists, especially if you’ve felt yourself sinking under the weight of this never-ending pandemic. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

DID YOU KNOW?
According to the ASPCA, the number of dogs and cats euthanized in United States animal shelters has declined significantly since 2011. The ASPCA reports that approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. That number is high, but it marks an improvement over 2011, when roughly 2.6 million dogs and cats were euthanized. The ASPCA credits part of this decline in euthanizations to an increase in animal adoptions and greater success at returning stray animals to their owners. Recent data indicates that roughly 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year, with a 50/50 split between dogs and cats. A greater emphasis on adoption can help reduce euthanization statistics even further.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Don’t Forget to Provide for Pets in Your Will DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As an attorney who helps clients prepare wills, I’d like to urge your readers to review their end-of-life plans and make sure that their pets are provided for. It’s so important to designate a new caregiver for their pets so that they are quickly rehomed to a person who will love and care for them. I own a lovable German Shepherd, and each year, I review my own life plan and adjust it if needed -- usually an adjustment in the amount I’ll give to his future caregiver to help with the financial aspects of taking in a pet, which can be substantial. -- Darren H., Philadelphia DEAR DARREN: Thank you for this reminder. None of us likes to think about the possibility of dying, but as people who love and care for our pets, we need to do it for them, and make sure they will be loved and cared for. You can read more about how to include a pet clause in your will at this link: https://tinyurl. com/3yjbzmdx. What if you’re not in a position to make or update your will at this time? Put it on your to-do list, and in the meantime, make a list of trusted relatives and friends who you think would be good caregivers for your pet. Contact each of them to ask if they’d be willing to take in your pet if something should happen to you. This type of informal arrangement will give you some peace of mind. As soon as you’re able to do so, create a written will or review your existing will. This helps ensure that your pet will go to a loving home and minimize their stress and grief. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Angry Recently, it seems many are hung up over the price of gas. Hey folks, there are harmless people dying and families forever being torn apart, and you are complaining about having to pay a bit more for fuel? We are one of the richest nations on earth with the lowest gas prices. I certainly don’t like it, but it is a tiny price to pay compared to the horrible situation befalling many others! I’m angry.
S E V RA It’s spring! Just a friendly reminder that it is spring, and soon the animals out there will be having babies. Many will be out looking for food to feed their babies. Watch out for them because, if they are killed, you will be killing the babies, too, since they will starve to death. Also, with the deer, if a deer crosses in front of you, stop and watch for a baby. Many times the baby is lagging behind mom. I even do this when more than one deer are up ahead of me because you never know how many more are coming. I watch the sides of the road for any animal. By doing all of this, I have never hit or killed a animal. Have a great spring!
Hair? They spent our tax money on hair style discrimination? We can’t afford food, gas, or utilities, yet our lovely government spent weeks – and our money – discussing hair? I guess they want us middle class folks weak and dependent upon our government. Thank God I still have my right arm to work...and vote.
Bags for you! To the person who wrote a few weeks ago about paper versus plastic bags: Why not use a reusable fabric bag? They are not a new idea, and I would be happy to pass on any number of the reusable bags I’ve collected. I collect, wash, and dry them, and they’re ready for a new home. I’d even be happy to sew you your very own reusable fabric bag and created an email account just for you: isewbagsforyou@gmail.com. Drop me a note and I’ll happily sew you a bag. Just promise me that you’ll actually use it (more than once)!
Kudos, Avon Lions Club! Rain or shine (or snow!), the Avon Lions Club puts on a chicken barbecue every spring, and our family looks forward to it each time. Club members are always there in good spirits and with smiling faces, even when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Thanks for the great meal and your commitment to the community!

How thoughtful! To the kind lady at Eastview Mall with her grandkids: it was so nice of you to purchase a carousel ride for the little girl who looked to be all of three years old. You can only ride the carousel if you have dollar bills, and her mother only had a credit card. Kudos!

Canandaigua Couple Embarks on Jiu-Jitsu Journey Together BY ELIJAH ROBINSON
C
anandaigua couple Breanne Reith and Sam Gutzmer recently traveled together to Harrisburg, PA, for their first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition on March 13th. Gutzmer took gold in men’s middle weight division and fourth in men’s absolute open weight division. Meanwhile, Reith took gold in women’s middle heavyweight division and bronze in women’s absolute open weight division. The couple trains at Synthesis Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Henrietta under Black Belt Casey Lamb. “He’s a fantastic coach; he breaks things down in a way you can understand very quickly, and he’s willing to teach people at their pace,” Gutzmer said. Speaking of Reith, Gutzmer said, “We started doing Brazilian jiu-jitsu together…nine months ago,” Gutzmer and Reith met at SUNY Oswego. Martial arts has long been an interest for Gutzmer whose prior experience prepared him for this moment. “When I was 13, I was kind of a chubby kid, and I took it on myself to start boxing with the heavy bag that was hung up in my barn just to get in shape,” Gutzmer recalled. “I learned a lot about the training and discipline it takes. I lived about 40 minutes from the gym, so I was only able to go there about three times a week. The rest of the days, I was training myself.”
To get exposure to jiu-jitsu before competing, they went to a competition to see what it was like. “We actually went to watch a local tournament in Syracuse, just to see kind of what it was like, and then we made the decision to sign up and go down to Harrisburg to compete,” Reith Initially, [jiu-jitsu] was said. Jiu-jistu has just something we taught the couple skills that can be wanted to learn together, incorporated into and as we got more and real life situations, more into it, we became as well.
more dedicated and more “Learning how to stay calm and passionate about it. regulate your - Breanne Reith breathing when you’re in those bad positions is really vital,” Gutzmer said. Reith agreed, adding, “It gives you a lot of control over your body, but also over your mind. So, when you’re in a difficult situation, you kind of can go back to your training and just say, ‘“we’re going to be calm. We’re going to work through this. We’re going to see what the next steps are.’”
Canandaigua couple (l-r) Breanne Reith and Sam Gutzmer took their decision to stay fit on to jiu-jitsu victory!
For Reith, lifelong experience in hockey instilled the skills and discipline necessary for jiu-jitsu. “I think I really learned a lot regarding strength, conditioning, training, and nutrition. I really think I’ve been able to continue through that with my life in general, but now when it comes to jiu-jitsu, I have those skills that I’ve had and have been working on and have been implementing since my hockey career,” Reith explained. The couple started jiu-jitsu with the intention of doing a fitness activity together. “Initially, it was just something we wanted to learn together, and as we got more and more into it, we became more dedicated and more passionate about it,” Reith said. Once they became seriously involved in jiu-jitsu, they found an inviting

community that welcomed them with open arms. “From the gym, all the way to competing, it’s a very, very welcoming community that you feel a part of,” Gutzmer said.

The couple intends on continuing this journey further to higher belt levels. “I want to keep competing, every two months, maybe every month, and to stay in shape the entire time like we’ve been doing,” Gutzmer said. “Eventually, once we get to higher belt levels, I want to be a world champion.” Their next tournament will be in Saratoga Springs through Grappling Industries on May 28th. “We’re really confident,” Gutzmer said, “For us both to be able to win, not just our first match, but the medal as well, was really a great confidence boost.” Enjoy this article? TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Yellow Lenses to Rescue for Macular Degeneration ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have an elderly friend who’s becoming blind from macular degeneration. After hearing of a particularly frustrating event she experienced due to vision loss, I remembered the great clarity that the yellow-lens (to reduce glare) glasses gave me, not just at night, but daytime also. So, I sent her a pair to see if it would help, as a lastditch effort. She called me crying, it had made such a difference! She has now had her prescription eyeglasses done with the yellow (blue-canceling?) lenses. Of course, we understand that this is just a temporary help, and won’t prevent the blindness from taking its course, but it has given her much better vision for a time. -- I.L.B. ANSWER: Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in industrialized countries. It is a degeneration of the central part of the retina, called the macula, which is responsible for fine detail central vision. The underlying cause is not precisely known, and the course is progressive. I was able to find a 2002 study that confirmed that yellow or orange lenses improved contrast sensitivity in people with early age-related macular degeneration, whereas red and gray lenses worsened it. Another study suggested that the perceived benefit (the subjective experience by the person) was enhanced, but that objective improvement in vision was not actually improved much at all. In my opinion, perceived benefit is still worth a great deal, and since there is little effective treatment for the more common “dry” form of ARMD beyond vitamins and smoking cessation, I am publishing your letter in hopes that some people will get improvements in their vision, as your friend did, from this low-cost treatment with essentially no risk of side effects.
KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Overdo it on the garlic or onions and need to freshen your breath? Try roasted coffee beans instead of gum or mints. Israeli scientists have found that coffee can inhibit the bacteria that leads to bad breath, but if you prefer drinking it to chewing, you’ll do best to take it black.
DID YOU KNOW? Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.
