WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER

Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs.

Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot.

Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.

WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* Make children’s pills easier to swallow by crushing them and putting them in a bit of jelly or applesauce. Make sure, especially if it’s a prescription medicine, that it can be crushed. -- U.L. in Minnesota

* To keep kids from running into a closed sliding-glass door, cut out a small picture of something that’s brightly colored, “laminate” it by taping it across both sides, then tape it to the door at children’s eye level. -- E.R. in New York

* Painting season is in full swing at my house, and here are my two favorite painting tips: One is to lightly soap the windows (glass only) and let it dry. Any paint splatters will land on the soap, which can be easily wiped away when the paint is all dry. The other is to give locks, hinges and doorknobs a light coat of petroleum jelly. It works the same way, and when polished away, it leaves a nice shine to hardware.

* Here’s a great spring facial: Split an avocado, mash half of it and use it as a mask. Let sit for up to five minutes, then rinse away with warm water.

* Cleaning windows? Use a nylon net scrubbie from the kitchen to get rid of bugs from screens. It also works really well to scrub bugs off the car grille or car window.

* Here’s a great tip you can use when parallel parking in front of a storefront. Check the reflection to see if it looks like there’s room when backing in or pulling forward. -- O.W. in California

DID YOU KNOW?

Oxygen is essential for the roots of grass to breathe and grow strong enough to support healthy lawns. But according to the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, compacted soil can produce a decrease in oxygen content that can make it hard for roots to thrive. Soil compaction can result from a number of activities, including walking on grass or driving or parking vehicles on grass. When soil is compacted, it breaks into small particles that reduce the amount of pore space in the soil. That makes it hard for water, oxygen and nutrients to get through, threatening the strength of the roots and putting the grass in jeopardy. Aerating a lawn can help homeowners foster strong root growth and healthy grass. When to aerate may be contingent upon local climate, so homeowners who suspect the soil in their yards is compact should consult with a local landscaping professional to determine the best time to aerate their lawns.

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS

Leaf spot

The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of MassachusettsAmherstnotesthatleafspotdiseasesaffectbothcool-and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungi is causing the problem. For example, bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungi that causes leafspot, anditalsoproducesdarkpurpletoblackspots. However, ittends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such situations, professional landscapers can be invaluable resources as well.

Fence

There are certain things you must do and should do if you plan to erect a fence. Most people find neighbors appreciate being informed of any decisions you are thinking of making to the property that can affect their views or their adjoining property. Before drawing up fence plans with a contractor, talk to the neighbors on either side of your home and gauge their receptiveness to a fence. At this point, you may want to consider offering to make the fencing project a joint deal to save money should the neighbors decide to install a fence as well. Contractors will often discount if they have several customers doing an installation at the same time. Property owners can save by splitting the costs of the shared walls of the fence where their property lines meet.

KEEP CRITTERS OUT OF YOUR HOUSE

Human beings are not the only creatures looking for warm and cozy spots to ride out autumn and winter. Very often wild animals see homes as the perfect spots to nest and survive the cold. Fall is a great time to inspect your home top to bottom and make sure there are no points of entry for unwanted guests. The Humane Society notes that deteriorated trim and fascia boards can make great entry points for animals like squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and possums. Other animals may bed down under porches or decks or even inside chimneys. Seal any holes or repair points that are penetrable by cold animals. Just be sure to inspect the home prior to sealing or capping any potential entry points to be certain there aren’t any animals already living inside. Otherwise you can trap unwanted animals in your home. Test possible entry points by sealing them loosely with a paper towel or insulation and see if the material gets pushed out.

WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOBILE PHONE ETIQUETTE

Always use appropriate language. When using a mobile phone in public, refrain from peppering conversations with expletives or graphic language. Children may be nearby without your knowledge, but even if there are no young people in the immediate vicinity, your fellow adults likely don’t want to hear foul or graphic language.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

By Lucie Winborne

* Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Goycochea would crouch down and covertly urinate on the field before every penalty shootout for good luck. He started the ritual during the 1990 World Cup quarterfinals and continued it for the rest of his career.

beside his bowl and howls -- making it impossible for me to work at my desk. What can I do to calm him down and help him lose weight? --

Dear Jim: It’s di cult to help overweight pets lose those extra pounds, and it’s clear that Seeker has no qualms about complaining about it!

Since you’re working from home, one way to mitigate the howling is to implement a divert-and-reward system to take his mind o his empty bowl. In essence, keep Seeker away from the kitchen and as busy as your schedule allows.

Immediately a er his breakfast, close o the kitchen. Use a baby gate or shut the door, and hide the food bowl out of sight. Take Seeker outside for a short walk to burn o extra energy and a few calories. If you’re in a high-rise apartment or another situation where going outside frequently is more di cult, opt for a ve-minute training and play session instead.

While you’re working, Seeker should be separated from the kitchen -- either in a closed-o room or with you in your o ce (but in his own corner) -- and given plenty of toys to chew on. Spend time with Seeker on each break from work. Play, work on basic obedience, or just hang out. Once you’re nished with work for the day, take Seeker out for a long walk before giving him dinner.

Stick with the diet prescribed by the vet. Be patient but consistent with Seeker to change his behavior. He can and will lose the weight, because you care about him!

MOMENTS IN TIME

On May 2, 1972, after nearly five decades as director of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover dies. By 1969 the media, the public and Congress had grown suspicious that the FBI might be abusing its authority. Congress passed laws requiring Senate confirmation of future FBI directors and limiting their tenure to 10 years. (The History Channel)

Q&A Master Gardeners with the

When should I prune raspberries to ensure a good harvest this year? Did I miss that timing? What other plants should be tended to in spring to ensure successful production this season?

Raspberries should be pruned in late winter or early spring (February - April).

We recommend leaving 4 - 6 canes per square foot at this time. For the ease of picking, a raspberry patch will be between 1 - 3 feet wide; if the patch is wider, consider cutting back or pulling out canes that widen the patch too much. When pruning out canes, cut them at the base. First, remove canes that have bulges in them-- these are usually caused

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

by cane borers, and the internal damage causes the canes to collapse once they become heavy with fruit. Second, remove all canes that have pale, dried-out looking bark, as those have fruited and will not yield fruit again. Next, remove the thinnest canes. Ideally you will be left with 4-6 thick, sturdy canes. If those canes have little remnants of fruit on their tips, you may cut the tips back to encourage more branching.

Elderberry is another berry crop that can be pruned in the same time period. Cut out canes that are 3 years old and over. Inspect the bark on the remaining canes,

removing areas with cankers (sunken, discolored lesions) and canes that have holes in them. When cutting back diseased canes such as these, look into the cross-section of the pruning cut. If you observe browning or uneven tissue in the pruning cut, continue cutting back until it is uniform.

Berry plants that should be pruned before their leaves emerge include: blueberry, currant and gooseberry, seaberry, and pawpaw.

Patient With Risk of Breast Cancer Questions Safety of Yearly MRI

DEAR DR. ROACH: Due to a slight genetic risk of breast cancer (my Tyrer-Cuzick Model score was 20.6%), my doctor wants me to get breast MRIs with contrast annually. I am concerned about long-term exposure to the gadolinium-based contrast dye. I’ve learned that this heavy metal is considered safe, but traces of it can be stored in the brain and other body tissues.

I am 49 and in very good health. I also get mammograms annually. I consulted my doctor about spacing out my MRIs every two to three years, but he said I should have an MRI every year. So I could be getting these MRIs for the next 35 or so years. Do the benefits of contrast dye outweigh the harm in a person with my health profile? -- S.A.

ANSWER: I’m afraid I don’t have a good answer for you. It is true that most authorities recommend an intensive breast cancer surveillance program for women at a high risk of breast cancer, in the range of a 20% to 25% lifetime risk. (The average risk for developing breast cancer for a woman born today is estimated to be about 13%.)

The Tyrer-Cuzick model of estimating breast cancer risk tends to give higher estimates than the other commonly used models, such as the BRCAPRO. Other models may not put you over the threshold for intensive screening with MRIs, which is usually combined with mammograms. The question about gadolinium (the chemical element used in the contrast dye for MRIs) is important because some people do store gadolinium in various tissues, including the brain, but the clinical significance of this is unknown. (People with kidney disease can develop a skin disease due to gadolinium, so they aren’t recommended to have MRIs with gadolinium.)

Although gadolinium can stay in the body for months or years, there has been no evidence of harm from gadolinium in brain tissue, despite these agents having been used for many years. Some agents have less retention than others. The U.S. FDA has mandated patient guides for these contrast agents, which relay the information above.

Given that there is a probable benefit to intensive screening for breast cancer in your case due to your high genetic risk, and no more than a theoretical risk from gadolinium, I believe that the benefits outweigh the risks, but I can’t say that with complete certainty.

TYPES OF TISSUE YOU CAN DONATE

Cornea: The cornea is the clear covering of the eye. The National Eye Institute notes that, unlike most other tissues in the body, the cornea does not contain blood vessels to provide nourishment or protection against infection. By donating their corneas, donors can help restore sight to people who lost theirs due to disease or injury.

SAFE WAYS TO DEAL WITH SINUS PRESSURE

Sinuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull. They are located in the low-center of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses.

When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration, and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difficult. This is when problems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur.

In order to combat sinus congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep the sinuses healthy.

Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drug-free alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba.

The key to preventing infection is to only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections.

Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use pre-packaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion. However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe.

Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages.

Avoid “final sale” items. It can be tempting to peruse the deep-discount rack at Mom’s favorite store when retailers cut prices on items in anticipation of a new season. However, these sales may come with restrictions on returns or exchanges. Unless you know Mom will like what you pick out, avoid the “final sale” racks in favor of items that can be returned or exchanged.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, which is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during which the heart can beat too fast, too slow or with an irregular rhythm. Atrial fibrillation, or AF, occurs when rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the atria, which consists of the heart’s two upper chambers, to contract very fast and irregularly. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, when a person is suffering from AF, blood begins to pool in his or her atria. While that blood pools in the atria, it is not being pumped completely into the heart’s two lower chambers, and this prevents the lower and upper chambers from working together effectively. Though AF does not always produce noticeable symptoms, some people with AF experience chest pain or heart failure, especially when the heart rhythm is rapid. AF can increase a person’s risk of stroke, and it may surface periodically or become an ongoing problem that lasts for years.

SENIOR NEWS

Why Are Seniors Targeted for Scams?

In one year alone, seniors lost over $3 billion to scammers, and it’s gotten worse every year. e 60-69 age group was bad enough, but the dollar losses rose even more a er age 70, and much more a er age 80.

Why are we targeted?

e thieves believe two things about us: We’re all rich and have great credit, having worked our whole lives, and, worst of all, that we won’t tell anyone if we lose money to them. ose two things alone make us constant targets.

All scammers have to do to turn us into victims, according to a study by Stanford and AARP, is raise our emotions. Whether happiness or anger, it doesn’t matter, because either will push us to hand over our information or our money.

For example, scammers will say we’ve won a big prize, like the lottery, but to claim that prize we need to send them processing fees in advance. We think about that prize and our good sense goes out the window.

Emotions come into play when a scammer calls pretending to be a grandchild in trouble. We’re asked to send money right away. We’re upset, and we do. But the emotional pleas for money don’t end there. Romance scams are huge, and too many lonely seniors send cash to their new love without questioning it.

Scammers who pretend to be from the government, such as the IRS, who frighten us into paying money, raise our emotions as well.

e list of scams directed at the elderly is nearly endless: investments, lottery wins, IRS tax bills, low-cost prescriptions, charities, tech repair, cemetery debts, romance, reverse mortgage, help signing up for Medicare, auto warranties ...

Beware. If you allow yourself to be scammed once, they will be back, because you’ll be on a list of people who can be fooled.

Poetry Helps Turn O My Editor Brain and Figure Out the World

I’ve been writing since I was very young. I used to ll pages with meaningless loops and squiggles before I actually knew how to read or write. In the second grade, I wrote a story about a haunted house and read it aloud for the class. A er that, I was hooked. My mom might still have that rst story somewhere.

My love of poetry didn’t come until college. I remember sitting in a little café at SUNY Brockport and writing my rst poems for one of my English classes. I think I tried to use a certain rhyme scheme and they sounded like greeting cards (read: they were awful). When I was introduced to free verse poetry, I fell in love. I found a way to express myself the way I wanted to with no rules I had to follow. On a whim, I submitted a poem to Jigsaw, the literary publication of SUNY Brockport, and won rst place. A er that, I was in love with poetry and excited about it.

In 2002, I tagged along with a friend to a Valentine’s Day open mic at e Hungerford Gallery in Rochester. at was my rst experience reading my poetry for other people. It was scary and wonderful at the same time. I started attending Pure Kona open mic regularly. It’s either the oldest or one of the oldest continuously running open mic nights in Rochester. Norm Davis started it in 1993, and it’s taken place in lots of places over the years. When I started going, it was at Daily Perks on Gregory Street; today it’s found a home at Equal Grounds on South Ave (Wednesday nights at 7pm). Poetry is a powerful tool for me. It was my therapy before I had an actual therapist. It lets me get those troubling or torturous or confusing thoughts out of my head and onto the page. Poetry lets me share my human experience with the world. It helps me gure things out. Sometimes it helps me simply express love, passion, or humor in more intimate ways. Where words o en get stuck on my tongue, I nd they ow out freely on a blank page or screen.

I frequently get “writer’s block” when writing ction, but that’s rarely the case when journaling or writing poetry. I’m also an editor, so I’m always looking for new ways to turn o my editor brain and just get the words out. Poetry is a great way to do that.

In 2011, I started a ction and poetry blog on WordPress called By Julie Blue. I still post poetry there when the mood strikes. Sometimes I go months without writing at all. I tend to write poetry about whatever is on my mind, or stuck in there, whatever that may be (love, my children, relationships, politics, death, nature, fear, alcoholism, complex emotions, joy).

Over the years, since that rst publication in Jigsaw, I’ve been published in a number of poetry anthologies. One day I hope to publish or self-publish my own collection or chapbook - if I can ever stop editing myself and call it “done.” For now, some of my poetry lives online and even more of it sleeps in my collection of pretty notebooks, paper scraps, and old envelopes I grab when nothing else is around. I nd my favorite time to write is in the early morning when the rest of my household is still asleep and the world outside is just waking up.

I nd that writing also helps me learn more about myself, my past, and what I want out of life. It’s a form of meditation. Julie Blue lives in Canandaigua, NY with her two children, Piper and Jack. She blogs at byjulieblue.com.

RAVES

Firemen’s Auxiliary

A very special thank you to the Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary. Saturday, they had a fundraiser at the firehouse. The chicken and biscuit dinner they served was absolutely delicious. Next year I think I will order two dinners for myself. Thank you to all who made this a special meal.

Kindness of strangers

To the very special father and daughter from Sand Hill Rd, who helped us unload our truck load of branches at the West Bloomfield drop off area, we are eternally grateful to you. Many sincere thanks, we couldn’t have done it without you. Your kindness is rare!!

Does anyone else notice the obscene and loud music in many stores? I hope store managers see this post. Most people over the age of 40 are the ones that actually go out to shop, the rest buy online and never set foot in a store. Sometimes I would like to stay and look around but the background noise/music forces me to make my purchase and get out ASAP. Maybe the cashiers have the freedom to play music they like. Maybe it gets piped in. We don’t want to hear loud, trashy, pounding and screaming when we enter a store; it’s not conducive to shopping. How about trying different music? Please.

Neighborhood trash

We live in the [local road] area of [local town]. We have complained for a long time about disgusting neighbors who shouldn’t be allowed to live in those conditions. [Code enforcement officer] nothing. The place recently burned and now it is even worse. Now there are rats and all kinds of creatures. What do we have to do to get it cleaned up? Maybe my next move will be to the state health department. I have had enough.

Price gouging

Ever do your math and realize how much we’re overcharged and gouged for products? A bottle of water costs X amount. Multiply that by the cost to buy a case. Drinks in restaurants and food prices, just to name a few. Unbelievable profits. Inflation is 5% over the past 3 years down from 8% when costs skyrocketed. Price of gas for delivery? Inflation? Inflation has gone down slightly. Why haven’t costs down? They were quick to go up. Why do we accept this?

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET

CURTAINS: Curtains also may have absorbed substantial amounts of dust, dirt and debris over the winter. This might be more visible near the end of winter when more sunlight begins to shine through. Clean the curtains in adherence to the manufacturer instructions before you open windows for the season so any wind that blows in does not spread debris onto nearby furniture. Once the curtains have been washed, opening windows may help them dry more quickly.

TIPS FOR TAKING STUNNING NATURE PHOTOS

Take the foreground into consideration. When you find an inspiring landscape to photograph, skip the empty landscapes and think about zeroing in on something interesting in the foreground. This can be a particularly attractive flower in front of a vast field, or even a rusty watering can left out in a row of crops. Items in the foreground impart interest in the photo.

THE GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR

According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry.
