HOLY THURSDAY Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Covenant Thursday,” “Maundy Thursday” or “Thursday of Mysteries.” Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the apostles. According to Catholic News Agency, Holy Thursday might be one of the most important, complex and profound days of celebration in the Catholic Church. Holy Thursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist as the true body and blood of Jesus Christ and the institution of the sacrament of the priesthood.

Establish a bar setup Home bars can range from rolling carts to built-in wet bars to a single tray of items. Space in a home will dictate the kind of bar homeowners can have. Rolling bar carts are popular and versatile, and they can be kept stationary or rolled in and out of a room as needed. If a bar cart is open, organization is key, as you don’t want it to look unkempt. A full-blown wet bar will require more construction, including plumbing and electricity if you need outlets for plugging in appliances. Wet bars are ideal in dens, renovated garages and finished basements.

TYPES OF FIREPITS FOR YOUR BACKYARD OASIS Gas firepit: Gas firepits are touted for their convenience, as they don’t require homeowners to carry wood and build fires. Upon being connected to a gas source, gas firepits provide fire at the click of a switch. Gas firepits are also appreciated for their safety, as there is little or no risk that flames from gas firepits will grow too large and become difficult to control.
We have a complete landscape design and installation service available. In addition to plantings, we install walks, walls and patios, and perform Spring and Fall cleanup and mulching. Roof Leaks?
DID YOU KNOW? If the 1927 song “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream” by Howard Johnson, Billy Moll and Robert A. King is correct, then the world has been a noisy place for quite some time. Though the exact origins of ice cream are unknown, historians agree this popular treat has been around for a very, very long time. The International Dairy Foods Association says the origins of ice cream may reach as far back as the second century B.C. Though he wasn’t around back then, the fifth Roman Emperor Nero, who ruled from 54 to 68 A.D., might have been so fond of iced treats that he routinely sent runners into the Apennine Mountains to retrieve snow that he would then flavor with fruits and juices. That tale might be apocryphal, but there’s no denying ice treats have been enjoyed for a long time. And based on a 2018 report from Grand View Research, Inc. that projected the global ice cream market would reach roughly $79 billion by 2025, it’s fair to say ice cream will remain popular for a long time to come as well.

MAKE BEDROOMS MORE CONDUCIVE TO SLEEP Insufficient sleep causes more problems than many people may know. Fatigue after a poor night’s sleep might seem like an inconvenience that can be easily rectified, but the long-term effects of insufficient sleep are significant. According to the National Sleep Foundation, researchers have found a link between insufficient sleep and an elevated risk for type 2 diabetes. In one such study exploring that potential link, researchers asked healthy adults to sleep just four hours per night for six nights. At the conclusion of that period, participants’ ability to break down glucose had decreased by an average of 40 percent and reached levels that are consistent with those of older adults at risk for diabetes. Insufficient sleep may be linked to any of a host of factors, including one’s bedroom environment. An environment that promotes restful sleep can help people suffering from insomnia or restlessness improve the quality of their sleep.

Pizza & Wings – our specialty for over 75 years
248-5372 Bushnell’s Basin
Families gather on Easter to participate in many different traditions that have been passed down through time. One such tradition is coloring Easter eggs. Millions of eggs are harvested and sold this time of year to be included in Easter festivities. However, soon after egg hunts have been completed and family dinners are brought to the table, those colored eggs may be relegated to the trash. When colored with foodgrade dyes, such as those manufactured and readily available around Easter, the eggs remain safe to eat. Colored eggs that are stored in a refrigerator can last up to a week if their shells remain intact. Peeled eggs may last up to five days, says the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. Once eggs are boiled and dyed, they should be promptly put into the refrigerator to keep them fresh and edible. It’s adviseable to use plastic, wood or papier-mâché eggs for Easter egg hunts, as eggs made of such materials will not spoil. Otherwise, hide and refrigerate hardboiled eggs if this task can be completed within two hours. After that time frame, the eggs have the potential to spoil. By eating colored eggs, you can reduce waste and add a tasty appetizer to Easter meals.

Dish Soap For The Grubs As your law n starts its spring grow th, w atch for brow n patches that never turn green. Dead patches could be caused by grubs feeding on the roots in the fall. Dig up square-foot sections of sod to a depth of about tw o inches in several areas in your yard. Next, exam ine the soil for short, fat, w hitish Cshaped w orm s. If you find 10 or m ore grubs per square foot you should treat your law n. To treat 1,000 square feet of grass, dilute tw o tablespoons of liquid dish soap in a gallon of w ater and spray it on the law n, preferably im m ediately after a rainfall. This w ill cause the grubs to com e to the surface, w here you can collect them if the birds don’t do the job for you. Repeat the treatm ent w eekly until the grubs stop surfacing. Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.
DID YOU KNOW? The planet is comprised of a remarkable set of organisms that, when working correctly, produce some awe-inspiring results. However, the Earth is constantly under attack from a growing population and the mechanisms of man that can have very real environmental impacts. Education is the key to inciting real change. One in four mammals is at risk of extinction, while 78 percent of marine mammals are threatened by an early and preventable death due to getting caught in fishing nets intended for other species. Furthermore, at least 50 million acres of rainforest are lost every year, totaling an area the size of Great Britain, says the organization Solar Energy World. By making real changes, including recycling, cutting down on emissions and protecting wildlife habitats, individuals can help to preserve the world’s resources for many years to come.

Shopping fear Recently I was at local [store] In line behind a couple that stole items under their coats in shopping cart, even had a small duffle bag on bottom rack full of who knows what?? I watched the cashier as she made a choice to keep quiet about it, and then realized that I was alone shopping and I should keep quiet as well, out of fear. I think Covid gave us all a heavy dose of fear that will linger for a good long time. Shame on us to be driven to silence out of fear. Woke bullies, dishonest people, are all whining, self absorbed pitiful creatures. Why do they feel so entitled? Maybe because of silent little mice like you and me, just working hard, minding our own business while the spoiled brats take over our world. I don’t want to die over a stolen bag of donuts, but I’d like to be proud of my own reflection in the mirror. Fear sucks
Pick up the poo! If you have a dog and are going to take that dog out for a walk, please bring your doggy poop bags! I saw a woman allow her dog to poop on my front lawn. Then, she walked away without picking it up. How irresponsible! Now, I have to clean up her dog's poop or risk stepping in it. Please pick up after your pets!
Happy Lights! Thank you to the people on the corner in Mumford with the rainbow lights. It makes me happy to drive through town. It's a refreshing change from the daily negativity. Thanks for supporting everyone!

Weather plays a role in driver safety regardless of what time of year it may be. From wind and rain to snow and ice, travelers routinely navigate roads when conditions are far from ideal. Wet roadways are a common occurrence. The automotive resource AAA advises that wet pavement contributes to nearly 1.2 million traffic accidents each year. Many crashes occur when drivers do not recognize the need to change their driving habits in wet conditions. Mastering driving techniques on slick, water-logged roads can help motorists avoid accidents and injuries. See and be seen: Before they even get behind the wheel, drivers should inspect all headlights and taillights to ensure they are in working order. Replace any bulbs that have burned out, and clean cloudy lens covers. Drivers need to see roadways clearly, so they should make sure their windshields are free of streaks, debris and water. Periodically replacing windshield wiper blades can ensure they’re working optimally when drivers need them most. Slow down and give other motorists space: Slowing down and stopping can take extra time when roads are wet. AAA notes that, with as little as 1/12inch of water on the road, tires have to displace a gallon of water a second to keep the rubber in contact with the street. Driving slowly can make it much easier for vehicles to stop. Plus, driving slowly enables drivers to see obstacles or pedestrians more easily, especially in heavy rains. Exercise caution with puddles and running water: It may be difficult to gauge the depth and ferocity of water flowing in a roadway. Quickly moving water can cause a vehicle to hydroplane or even move a large vehicle. A deep puddle also can affect drivers’ ability to steer or cause vehicles to stall. Take another route rather than risk driving through large puddles or areas where water is flowing on roadways. Skidding: Do not slam on the brakes if a car begins to skid or hydroplane, advise experts. Instead, ease up slowly from the accelerator and then steer the vehicle into the skid or straight. Then accelerate smoothly once more. Sudden, jerky movements when a car begins to skid can exacerbate the situation. Maintain tires: Tire treads should be checked at the start of a new season to ensure the rubber will be able to grip the road. Rotate tires according to the manufacturer’s requirements, or every 5,000 miles. Properly inflated tires will improve traction as well.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

Moose are powerful swimmers.
A moose can dive 20 feet under water and stay under water for up to 30 seconds! They can also swim fairly fast considering their size: up to six miles an hour. Moose hair 3 is hollow, which helps them stay afloat while swimming or while eating. It also helps to keep moose warm in the winter.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Her Lack of Perspiration Has Reader in a Sweat ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an elderly woman who has never perspired and would like to know why. Heat makes me very sick. I love the outdoors, but can be out only a short while in the warmer weather. No one seems to have an answer for me. -- P.M. ANSWER: The name for the condition of no sweating at all is anhidrosis, and there are several causes. There are rare conditions people are born with. These are a possibility, since you have never perspired. However, nearly all of these rare diseases have other significant symptoms you don’t mention. Damage to sweat glands can be seen in autoimmune diseases and diseases that can destroy sweat glands. None of these is likely, as they too have additional symptoms you would have identified during your life. Likewise, you don’t mention medications, which may have lack of sweating as a side effect. I suspect you don’t have a diagnosable disease but rather that you are on the far end of the normal range for sweating (this would be called hypohidrosis). Just as there are people who get drenched with sweat in mildly warm weather, there are some who sweat very little. Since sweating is a major way of keeping cool, you are at higher risk for heat injury, including heatstroke. Avoiding hot weather, as it sounds like you’ve done, is wise. Sun protection (e.g., wearing a wide-brimmed hat) is also wise, as is making sure you have enough fluids. Avoiding excess heat becomes even more important as you get older, since an older person has less ability to adapt to heat than a younger person.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Breaking News Alert! Turn Off the Television I learned a lesson this week when I discovered I’d spent over 10 hours glued to the news on television. Afterward, I was depressed and full of anxiety. I knew that couldn’t be good for me. It makes sense that a gym chain turned off the TVs in their locations in 27 states, believing that cable news wasn’t good for a healthy lifestyle. And this was several years ago, when the news was comparatively milder than it is now. Consider how much different our lives -- and the news -- are today, and it makes a lot of sense to avoid an overdose of what’s going on in the world. My newest tactic is to use a timer. At the top of the hour, I’ll turn on a cable news channel, watch for several minutes ... and then turn it off. Whatever is new will be talked about then, but it’s often a repeat of the top of the previous hour. What do we do instead once we turn off the news? Change to a different channel, perhaps one that shows re-runs from a previous era. The “Andy Griffith Show” comes to mind. So do “My Three Sons,” “I Love Lucy” and “Columbo.” Then there’s premium fare like The History Channel, Smithsonian Channel and even best of British TV channels. Or we can turn the television off altogether and, now that spring is here, go outside and walk. Or start a new garden. Or talk to neighbors who are also escaping the television. There are specific health reasons to get away from the television news, and sitting too long is at the top of the list. It leads to memory decline, anxiety, stress ... which leads to insomnia and changes in diet. We think we need to keep up with current events ... but at what cost? (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

While many people visit yard sales looking for antiques or other unique items that likely can’t be found at traditional retailers, yard sale shoppers should know that their efforts can be great for the environment. Shoppers can browse through gently used items that no longer serve utility for the seller but may be just what buyers are looking for. Rather than throwing out belongings that get little use, people who organize a sale are reducing their contributions to nearby landfills.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On April 12, 1861, the bloodiest four years in American history begin when Confederate shore batteries under Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard open fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina’s Charleston Bay. Four years later, the Confederacy was defeated at a cost of 620,000 Union and Confederate soldiers dead.
HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS Balance engagement with patience. NFIB® recommends that business owners tone down their sales efforts without coming off as disengaged. Warmly welcome visitors to the booth or stall and express a willingness to discuss products customers appear interested in. But keep in mind that many people attend festivals and marketplaces to browse, so give them space after welcoming them to the booth.

Penny Saver PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Millie
Meet . Millie was born in Jacksonville, Tennessee and came to her new home in the Finger Lakes when she was just 6 weeks old. Millie’s favorite things include going to the dog park, swimming, taking walks with mom, hanging from her rope toy, McDonald’s, and kids. Millie is one sweet and spoiled pup.
Avoid Predatory Loans From Some Pet Stores DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently read an article about a predatory lender that is targeting people buying dogs at some pet stores. These loans have insane interest rates as high as 130% to 189%! Please warn your readers to avoid taking out high-interest loans to buy a new pet. So many pets are in shelters, waiting for their forever homes. Don’t buy from a puppy mill! -Janie F., Sarasota, Florida
Online Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry. • Use medications wisely. Be mindful of medications, making sure none of your pills fall on the floor where they can be gobbled up by pets.
ASH WEDNESDAY The Day of Ashes commemorates the repentance of sin. On Ash Wednesday, Christians have ashes placed on their foreheads in the shape of a cross in recognition of their need to repent. Many churches host Ash Wednesday services, and those who receive the ashes are not only reminded of their mortality and sinfulness, but also of the opportunity for absolution. Christians typically fast on Ash Wednesday, though some simply abstain from eating meat. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR JANIE: Thank you for sounding the alarm! A recent CBS News report warned about a lending business called EasyPay Finance that charges huge interest rates. Find the article here: https://tinyurl. com/26b8mdcz/ Predatory loans and pet stores that source from puppy mills are a nasty storm of awfulness. Often, puppy mill dogs arrive at the store in poor condition, and new owners who’ve just paid thousands of dollars to buy a dog now have to shell out thousands more for medical care. The message here is clear: Don’t take out a high-interest loan to buy a pet. If you spend time researching the perfect dog for your family, then you should also spend time studying the financial aspects of dog ownership. Do business with reputable breeders -- you should be able to visit the breeder and see the conditions your prospective pet lives in, meet the puppies and their mother, and discuss their care. Good breeders care about their dogs’ welfare. If you’re going to pay thousands of dollars for a pet, choose this route. Shelter pets are another option. If you aren’t breed-specific but want a wonderful companion, contact the local shelter. Adoption fees are a few hundred dollars, but that is significantly less than what puppy mills are charging. And you’ll get a healthy dog that’s ready for a new family. It’s a win-win. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

wildlife that inhabit the Canal system. - Brian U. Stratton, Canal Corporation Director
About the New York State Canal System The New York State Canal Corporation runs the New York State Canal System, which includes the Erie, Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca canals. Spanning 524 miles, the waterway links the Hudson River with the Great Lakes, the Finger Lakes and Lake Champlain. In 2017, the Canal Corporation celebrated the 200th anniversary of the groundbreaking for the Erie Canal, which occurred in the city of Rome on July 4, 1817. The Canal System includes the Canalway Trail, a network of approximately 400 miles of multi-use trails across upstate New York. The Canalway Trail follows the towpaths of both active and historic sections of the New York State Canal System as well as adjacent abandoned rail corridors. Together, the canals and trail create a world-class recreationway that is a vibrant, scenic, and unique New York resource. PERSONALS PRAYER TO THE Blessed Virgin (Never known to fail.) Oh, most Beautiful Flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none who can withstand your power. Holy Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us, who have recourse to Thee. (3 times). Holy Mother, I place this in your hands. (3 times). Say this prayer 3 days and then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. Thank you Virgin Mary for answering my prayers. P.G.

DID YOU KNOW? According to KidsHealth.org, more than one-third of child injuries and deaths happen at home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that most incidents at home occur where there is water, such as in the bathroom or kitchen; heat or flame, like in the kitchen or around the grill; toxic substances, like those found in medicine cabinets or beneath kitchen sinks; and in places where kids can fall, such as on staircases.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * A garden manicure is what my mother calls it: When working with plants and dirt, rake your nails across a bar of soap. The soap prevents dirt particles from lodging under nails, and the soap washes away easily when you are finished. Happy Gardening! -- JoAnn * “If you have a spade with a long handle, you can transfer common measurements to the handle. Just lay a tape measure alongside the handle, and use a black marker to note common spacing, like feet and inches. Then, when you put in plants, you can check quickly whether they are spaced correctly. Very handy!” -- P.E. in Arkansas * “Garden tool storage doesn’t have to be hard. Fill a wide mouth bucket with clean sand. Add a half quart or motor oil and stir. Then use the sand to clean and store your garden tools like shovels, rakes or hoes. The sand/oil mixture helps clean the metal surfaces, and the heaviness of the container lets you stick them in the sand without fear of everything falling down, like it would if you leaned them along a wall.” -- E. in North Carolina * Here’s a recipe for a quickie bird feeder or bath: Flip over a nice-size flower pot, and place the pot’s tray on the top. Fill with seed or water. The birds will thank you -- maybe even by eating some nuisance bugs along with the seed. * If the string on your trimmer is always breaking or jamming, try this old trick: Give the coiled string a spray with vegetable oil before you thread it. It lubricates the line, making it less likely to pull and less likely to break.
