If you think that the only way to exercise and burn calories involves gym equipment, think again. Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motorized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. Try to vary positions and alternate which hands you use to reduce strain and get an even workout. Fitness experts say that gardening can improve strength, increase endurance and assist with flexibility. According to a report in the UK publication The Telegraph, clearing a pond or weeding can burn some 300 calories in an hour. Forty-five minutes worth of gardening can burn as many caloriesas30minutesofaerobics.

Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural.

* On May 12, 1925, a Philadelphia radio station broadcasts the first all-star radio program featuring film actors and actresses. Sound films had not yet debuted, and it marked the first time that most listeners had heard the voices of film stars like Lillian Gish and Marion Davies.
* On May 13, 1956, Gene Autry’s musical variety show, “Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch,” airs its final broadcast after 16 years. The show featured short skits about cowboys and rustlers, along with musical numbers by Autry, “America’s singing cowboy.”

REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME
One of the most popular methods of reducing radon concentrations involves a process called active soil depressurization, or ASD. This is a cost-effective and reliable technique to reduce radon that involves capturing the radon from beneath a building before it can enter the dwelling. A venting system draws the radon gas from the soil beneath the foundation and exhausts it outside of the building - far away from windows and other home openings. A continuously operating fan draws and discharges the radon outdoors.
Radon that has infiltrated water supplies may require other removal methods. Such methods may require spraying water into a contained air space, introducing air bubbles into the water or storing water in a tank until the radon has decayed. Another method employs granular activated carbon (GAC) to remove radon from the water. The GAC method has been more widely tested and is more commonly used in individual homes, according to the EPA.

By Lucie Winborne* In 1911, Elmer McCurdy robbed a passenger train he thought contained thousands of dollars, and was shot by lawmen after making off with just $46. His unclaimed corpse was then embalmed and sold to a traveling carnival. It would be used as a prop or attraction in haunted houses and wax museums for the next 66 years (even showing up on the set of “The Six Million Dollar Man”), until he was finally buried at the famous Boot Hill cemetery in Dodge City, Kansas.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. While shopping at the Geneseo Dollar Store, I had to go back out to the car because I had forgotten my money. A woman inside paid for my laundry detergent when I got back. I want to thank her. Her kindness is appreciated. I will pay it forward.
A Sincere Heartfelt Thank You
My pregnant granddaughter was visiting April 28th from Michigan. She had a problem with a front tire and the tire shop was hesitant about only doing 1 tire on a four wheel drive. My granddaughter was not able to afford 2 tires and a front end alignment. A female customer graciously paid for both tires and the alignment. This lady will never know how very much her generous gift was appreciated. May God bless you. Thank you so much.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD
For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate.
Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.
DID YOU KNOW?
As more people work remotely, electricians and safety advocates are warning that various missteps may be putting people at unnecessary risk of fire and other unsafe conditions. Electrical equipment is necessary to run home offices just like it is traditional offices. Some people may find they have a shortage of electrical outlets to power their devices, and as a result they may turn to extension cords or power strips. While that may seem like an easy fix, it is easy to inadvertently overload outlets and circuits by connecting more than one power strip or extension cord together in a practice known as “daisy chaining.”
According to the U.S. Office of Compliance, using a daisy chain in the workplace violates the National Electrical Code as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s rules. While it may not break code at home, overloading any outlets increases risk for fire. The National Fire Protection Association indicates that more than 45,000 residential fires are started each year due to electrical failure and malfunction. Overload causes products to overheat, and that can spark fires in the power cords themselves or inside the wall where electrical lines are hidden.

DID YOU KNOW? Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer to affect the endocrine system. While many cancers have decreased in prevalence, ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc. indicates incidence rates for thyroid cancer have increased in recent years. The American Cancer Society expects thyroid cancer deaths to increase to 2,200 in 2021 out of an estimated 44,280 people affected by thyroid cancer. Unlike most other adult cancers, thyroid cancer is commonly diagnosed at a younger age. Women are three times more likely to develop thyroid cancer than men. Thyroid cancer is largely treatable, most notably with the removal of a portion of the gland or the entire thyroid gland depending on cancer stage. People who have had their thyroids removed (thyroidectomy) will need to take daily thyroid hormone pills.

Maureen A. Goodberlet District Clerk Victor Central School DistrictTO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.Diabetics Receive Great Results From a Plant-Based Diet
DEAR DR. ROACH: Your recent column about treating diabetes left me wondering. Diabetes, as I understand it, is usually a result of too much sugar being consumed. But consuming carbohydrates is not that different because they are quickly converted to sugar through the human chemical processes. So, why are you promoting a plant-based diet that is high in carbohydrates?
Consuming protein, which is easily obtained by eating meat, seems to be the answer to reducing the consumption of simple and complex carbohydrates that are quickly converted to sugar in our body. I’ve switched to a high-protein diet (both plant and animal protein), and my blood sugar has been very well-controlled for a couple of years. -- F.B.
ANSWER: Diabetes is not a result of consuming too much sugar. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder where the cells that make insulin are destroyed by the body. Type 2 diabetes is a disease of insulin resistance and a relative inability to secrete insulin in response to a sugar load. In a person with Type 2 diabetes, consuming too much sugar in a short time overloads the body’s ability to respond, so their blood sugar goes up. It is persistent high blood sugar that is responsible for most of the damage to the kidneys, eyes, blood vessels and nerves.
I am careful about what I mean by a plant-based diet. While it’s true that a diet consisting entirely of maple syrup and orange juice would be extremely bad for a person with diabetes because of the concerns about blood sugar that you raised, a plant-based diet that is mostly vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fatty fish and nuts/seeds with moderate amounts of whole fruits does not raise blood sugar more than a standard Western diet.
The high fiber content of the legumes, whole grains and vegetables prevents rapid absorption, and the protein and healthy fat in nuts and fatty fish likewise slow stomachemptying. Finally, there is good evidence that people with diabetes have excellent results with this kind of diet.
You are right that protein is important for a person with diabetes, but many high-protein diets based on meat also have high amounts of saturated fat, which increase the risk for heart blockages. In addition, saturated fat is a major cause of disease and death in people with diabetes. However, it is possible to have a healthy, high-protein diet with care.

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA
Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia:
• Trouble communicating or finding words.
• Difficulty completing complex tasks.
• Challenges with planning and organization.
• Episodes of confusion and disorientation.
• Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party.
• Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations.
Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are other types of dementia. The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia. Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may mistakeforAlzheimer’sdisease.TheAlzheimer’sAssociationnotesthatpeople with DLB often have not only memory loss and cognitive problems common in Alzheimer’s, but they also display initial or early symptoms such as sleep disturbances, well-formed visual hallucinations, slowness, gait imbalance or other Parkinsonian movement features, which can lead to misdiagnosis.

simply asking zoos and aquariums for their most unique animals, oldest animals, and animals with clever names. is soon turned into a project also featuring wildlife preserves and incorporating the expertise of animal advocacy groups who fact-checked their respective animals’ chapters.
e project, the Smiths say, “[sails] into uncharted waters from a literary standpoint … no one has ever taken the threads of zoological conservation, animal history, and animal humor, and fed that trilogy through the eye of a single needle,” as happens in this new book.”
e Smiths’ goal is that their humor and pop culture will “bring the environmental message to a broader audience who might not be inclined to delve into a totally scientific approach to this topic.”
Particularly exciting to the Smiths throughout the process was going to their computer and finding out what part of the country or world would have reached out to contribute to this global project.
e Smiths say they “weren’t trying to write a biology book nor a media encyclopedia,” but instead started by
Some of the Smiths’ favorite stories from the book include the one animal le on the planet that had contact with Adolf Hitler, the animal that was handled by both Charles Darwin (1809-1882) and “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin (1962-2006). Hearing about each zoo’s choices for their animals with the cleverest or funniest names provided hearty laughter along the way as well.
And when the Smiths received input from animal sanctuaries in Africa, such as the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance and Uganda’s Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, with goals of animal rescue and survival against poachers and illegal traffickers, the Smiths knew their project would positively impact the animal kingdom.
e Smiths are happy with their latest publication and hope it will help zoological conservation efforts at home and abroad, while providing entertainment and education to all readers.

DID YOU KNOW? The first International Special Olympics Summer Games were held at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 20, 1968. The games were the brainchild of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who first proposed the idea of nationwide sports contests for young people with intellectual disabilities in November of 1966. Kennedy Shriver had spent years advocating for young people with intellectual disabilities, even opening a summer camp for such youngsters at her home in suburban Washington, D.C. in June of 1962. More than 200 events were offered at the first Special Olympics, including water polo, the 100-yard swim, the 50-yard dash, the broad jump, and the high jump.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY
Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts.
In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the futureofthenation(63percent),money(62percent)andwork(61percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day canhelpmenandwomenreducetheirstresslevelsandavoidthenegative side effects associated with chronic stress.

DID YOU KNOW? Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET
FLOORS: Simply vacuuming or sweeping the floors might not be enough to banish some of winter’s most uninvited guests. Dust has a way of settling into a home over the course of a typical winter, and it’s easy for a home’s inhabitants to track dirt and debris inside as well. After vacuuming or sweeping floors, go over them with a mop. Doing so can remove any lingering dust, dirt, debris, and allergens the vacuum or broom failed to pick up. Apply wood cleaner and polish to wood floors to make them look even cleaner.
PAW’S CORNER
By Sam MazzottaPet Allergies Blossom in Spring
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 7-year-old cat, “Sunbeam,” has a tough time in the spring when the pollen starts to fly. He sneezes frequently, his eyes water and he scratches hot spots on his skin. I’ve tried many things to reduce the allergens in the home: I vacuum every other day, run an air purifier near where he sleeps and I brush his coat daily. TITLE: None of that seems to help. What else can I try? -- Harry in Pittsburgh
DEAR HARRY: You’re doing your best to reduce airborne allergens, and that’s great. However, because it doesn’t seem to be helping, it’s time to enlist the help of your cat’s veterinarian.
e vet can suggest some other ways to reduce allergens in the home, and will consider that Sunbeam is reacting to more than one issue -- not just pollen, but indoor dust or even the food he’s eating. ey will also check for any secondary issues that may be contributing to Sunbeam’s discomfort, like an ear infection or yeast infection.
Short-term treatment with a prescription medication, like a steroid or an antihistamine, may be necessary during the worst part of the season. ese will help reduce the intense itching and eye irritation, and should help clear up hot spots on his skin.
At home, try adding fish oil and probiotics to your cat’s food -- these supplements can help with itchy, flaky skin conditions. (I give my cat a teaspoon of plain yogurt daily to balance his gut bacteria.) An occasional bath, twice a month or so, using a pet shampoo that contains oatmeal will soothe his skin and wash away any lingering allergens on his coat.
