ITEMS TO IMPROVE OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES
National Award Winning Paper
The popularity of outdoor living spaces has been growing for years. A 2014 study from the home remodeling and design platform Houzz found that 56 percent of homeowners were making updates to improve their yards for entertaining. Similarly, nearly 60 percent of architectural practices surveyed by the American Institute of Architects in 2016 said outdoor living spaces were popular features in the homes they built. Outdoor living spaces may also be sound investments for homeowners looking to improve the resale value of their properties. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2017 “Cost vs. Value” report, outdoor living spaces returned between 55 and 71 percent of homeowners’ initial investments at resale. When planning an outdoor living space, homeowners with ample backyards have much to work with. However, to make the most of the space while simultaneously hoping to get as strong a return on their investments as possible, homeowners should look to create spaces that offer broad appeal and are not too personalized.

MAKE THE MOST OF LIMITED SPACE
Family Business. 26 years of experience. Now booking for summer and fall. Call/text today for your free estimate.
Reconsider your furniture. Furniture can make rooms feel cozy, cramped or spacious. For homeowners with limited space in their homes, furniture that also can be used as storage can save space without sacrificing comfort. For the bedroom, choose a storage bed if the quarters are cramped and it’s difficult to find space for two dressers. Such beds also can be used to store bed linens if closet space is limited. Purchase storage ottomans and/or end tables with storage beneath to make living areas feel less cramped.

We will beat any Roof Estimate by $1,000! WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Honestly assess whether or not you can finish the job. Do-it-yourselfers may have the abilities to complete a project, but they should not let their pride get in the way of their ultimate goal, which is the completion of the project. In addition to money, time or lack thereof, is often the culprit behind stalled projects. Homeowners with full-time jobs, families or both may not be able to find the time to complete a job in a timely fashion. If the project has been stuck in neutral and no sudden windfall of free time is on the horizon, start contacting contractors to finish the job for you. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition. People with Down syndrome may have mental impairment and a higher risk for various illnesses. While the public may be familiar with the hallmarks of Down syndrome, many people may not be aware that there are actually three different types of Down syndrome. · Trisomy-21 (nondisjunction): This is the most common type of Down syndrome and is the result of an error in cell division called “nondisjunction.” The National Down Syndrome Society says nondisjunction results in an embryo with three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two. As the embryo develops, the extra chromosome is replicated in every cell of the body. This type of Down syndrome accounts for 95 percent of all cases.

No matter which form is diagnosed, people with Down syndrome have an extra portion of chromosome 21 present in some shape or form. This extra genetic material alters normal development in the body.

· Translocation: Accounting for 4 percent of cases of Down syndrome, translocation is marked by 46 chromosomes in all cells. However, an additional full or partial copy of chromosome 21 attaches to another chromosome, usually chromosome 14. The presence of the extra full or partial chromosome 21 causes the characteristics of Down syndrome, says the NDSS.

DRYWALL SPECIALIST Remodeling- Bathroom, Kitchen & Basement
· Mosaicism: This is diagnosed when there is a mixture of two types of cells, indicates the NDSS. Some contain the usual 46 chromosomes, while the others contain 47. The cells with 47 chromosomes contain an extra chromosome 21. Research indicates people with mosaicism have fewer characteristics of Down syndrome than those with other types, but this form is the least common, accounting for roughly 1 percent of all cases.

SIGNS OF WINTER LAWN DAMAGE Wilted grass: Many things can cause grass to wilt over the course of winter, so homeowners may have to put on their sleuth’s cap to determine why grass that was healthy as recently as late fall is now wilted as the spring bloom begins. Grass that’s adjacent to walkways and driveways might have wilted due to the application of deicing solutions. Such products can prevent the formation of ice on driveways and walkways. However, when they’re tracked onto the grass by people or animals or blown there by winter winds, grass can wilt. A deep watering in spring can flush any lingering solution from the lawn. In future winters, homeowners can be as careful as possible when applying de-icing solutions, making a concerted effort to avoid spreading any onto the grass and limited applications to areas of the driveway and walkways that are not close to the grass.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.

HOW TO ACCOUNT FOR A RISING COST OF LIVING Look for a new job or fresh income streams. A rising cost of living is a concern for people from all walks of life, but it may be especially concerning for retirees or individuals with costs like childcare that can be hard to pare back. In such instances, individuals can look for new a job or fresh income streams. According to the Q3 2021 CNBC | Momentive Small Business Survey, 50 percent of small business owners say it’s gotten harder to find qualified people to hire compared to a year ago. And nearly one-third of survey respondents indicate they have open roles they have not been able to fill for at least three months. Individuals can explore local employment opportunities in an effort to find a new, more lucrative job that can help them combat a rising cost of living. Others who want to remain in their jobs can look for part-time work to supplement their existing income.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles What Lured Us Back to the Senior Center? The too-young staffers at the senior center finally figured out that we’re not coming back until COVID is gone. And it’s not gone. In some areas it’s easing up a bit, but here it’s still going strong. We’re not willing to risk contagion by dashing in the door of the senior center and pretending things are back to normal. At least once a week the center sends out emails and gets few replies in response. Come to the Ladies Lunch served indoors? No thanks. Experiment with still life photography in the meeting room, with vases, statuettes and fruit provided? No. We held out, refusing as a group to be party to any potential COVID-spreading indoor activity. Finally, the staff got it. They went with videos. The art classes will be online. The book club will have an online discussion, with a link to how to log in to the meeting. And the exercise classes will be posted online so everyone can stretch and work out at home. But it was the offer of free haircuts that broke our resolve. Some of us haven’t been in a salon for two years. The rules were specific. Stay in our car until we were handed an at-home COVID test, which we would take in the car. If it proved to be negative, we could proceed to the next step (one person at a time), which was to sit on a chair in the hall inside the right-side door of the center and wait for our turn. When the person ahead of us was finished (down the hall in the kitchen), she would be escorted out the left-side door to the parking lot. It was glorious. We each came out of the left-side door with a spring in our step, freshly relieved of two years of unruly hair. Staff should have thought of this before.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

STRATEGIES TO DISCONNECT MORE OFTEN Turn off your notifications. According to research from the Business of Apps, the average smartphone user in the United States receives 46 app push notifications each day. The sound of a smartphone notification has become as recognizable as any sound, and the volume of notifications the average users receive in a 24-hour period no doubt contributes heavily to how much time they spend on their phones. Turning off notifications makes it easier to disconnect from devices, and may even make individuals more productive.

The real religion of the world comes from women much more than from men — from mothers most of all, who carry the key of our souls in their bosoms. ~Oliver Wendell Holmes
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Earth Day got me thinking about how many plastic bottled beverages my family goes through. I have found six glass reusable bottles that can be run through the dishwasher, and I store them in the refrigerator in a cardboard six-pack holder. I still want the convenience of grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, but I feel better knowing that I’m not contributing to a plastic problem.” -- JoAnn * Using ice-cold sour cream instead of ice-cold water in your pie crust recipe will give you a flakier crust. * “If you love to burn candles as much as I do, consider storing them in the refrigerator for a day or so before burning them. I swear, it makes them burn evenly. Someone told me this once, and I tried it and have been doing it ever since. No more crooked candles.” -- J.L. in Tennessee * When traveling for more than a few days, stick your plants into the bathtub with a little bit of water. They’ll soak it up, and you won’t have to have someone come over and water your plants. This will only work for a week at most, though.” -- J.M. in Louisiana
DID YOU KNOW?
* Kitchen remodels can be expensive, but when your kitchen isn’t usable, that’s even more of an expense. Instead of opting for takeout food, set up an alternate kitchen to save money. A microwave, toaster oven, coffee pot and a small dorm-style fridge can take care of a lot of your needs in the short term.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics reports that mushrooms contain about 15 vitamins and minerals, including folate magnesium, potassium, vitamin B6, and zinc. Mushrooms also are low in calories and rich in antioxidants, which can help to lower risk for inflammation.
* Planning on putting in some new plants or sprucing up your garden this spring? Check with your town’s yard-waste recycling center about free mulch or compost. Many facilities offer these to their residents.

Cause of Chronic Cough Has Doctors Stumped
Convenient Brighton location 200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester

---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I picked up a cough while traveling in Europe more than two years ago. No other symptoms have ever presented. Since that time, I have received every test imaginable, including spirometry, multiple breathing tests, CT scans, X-rays and most recently a bronchoscopy. Nothing was discovered through any of these tests. Other than the cough, I am very healthy. The cough is driving me crazy, however. I have been prescribed every type of medication, and nothing helps. My doctors are at a standstill and have nothing further to offer. I don’t know where to go from here, but I know I can’t live my life with this cough. I avoid a lot of personal interaction because it is so disruptive to constantly be coughing. I would greatly appreciate your help with this, and any advice regarding what steps need to be taken next. -- P.M. ANSWER: Chronic cough (lasting more than several months) is most frequently a result of acid reflux, asthma or postnasal drip, although there are many more causes, including infection, which would be a concern given that you have a clear idea of when it started. Despite an extensive evaluation for cough, it is not that uncommon that people are left with no explanation but with a persistent cough. There are other, less-common treatments at this point, some of which your doctors might not have tried. The first is the medication gabapentin (Neurontin). This is used for a condition called laryngeal neuropathy, and I have had a few spectacular cases where the cough disappears entirely. People have written saying that their doctor prescribed the medication for them after reading it in the column and they also had relief, even after decades of persistent coughing, so I think this condition may be more common than I have ever thought. A second has been a cough suppressant. I am very cautious about using opiate drugs, and it is certainly not appropriate for some people, but cautious use of tramadol in selected patients has been successful in reducing, but not eliminating, cough. Just yesterday in the clinic, one of the residents I supervise had a patient with chronic cough who had dramatic improvement through the use of speech therapy. Looking it up today, I find trials showing significant improvement, if modest, with this approach, as well as several ongoing trials. Given the potential side effects of gabapentin and tramadol, I think I will be making more referrals to my speech and language pathology colleagues, and suggest you speak with your doctors about some of these options. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RECOVERING FROM STROKE (NAPSI)—Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability—in fact, it’s even more disabling than it is fatal. The period following a stroke can be difficult for patients and their loved ones, as they grapple with the uncertainties of recovery. For example, Sabrina Warren-White was a busy professional when a stroke in left her unable to speak or use her right side. She quickly began a rigorous rehabilitation program and can now speak, walk and use her right arm. Doctor’s Advice Once acute medical issues are resolved, focusing on rehabilitation is paramount to helping people build their strength, capabilities and confidence, said Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, the Ruth L. Works Professor and Chairman for the Department of Neurology and Co-director for the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute and KY Clinic at the University of Kentucky. “Most patients will recover to some degree, but a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation is crucial because it has been shown to result in better outcomes for patients,” Dr. Goldstein added. Access to coordinated and intense therapies after a stroke is important because the greatest amount of recovery tends to occur in the first 30 days, Dr. Goldstein said. “Intensity of rehabilitation therapy matters,” he pointed out. “Patients need access to good rehabilitation services and should continue to work at it, even after that initial recovery period.” Where To Turn To help, the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally sponsored by Kindred Rehabilitation Services, raises awareness that stroke is largely beatable through high-quality rehabilitation, patient support, and implementation of Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Guidelines. Patients and caregivers can access more information about recovery and how to make informed decisions at www.StrokeAssociation.org/recovery. Page 14

Pay attention to brake pads. Brake pads that are allowed to wear down can cause damage to the brakes’ rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on your vehicle’s brake pads, which are far less expensive to replace than rotors and calipers, and do not allow them to wear down to metal. AUTOMOTIVE

S E V RA Guiding Light Mom, thank you for always being there for me and guiding me through life. Love you so much! Loving Memory Although you’re no longer around for me to share the day with you, I think of you every day and thank you for being the best mom that a son could have! - Dan M Selfless Love Mom, your selfless love, kindness, generosity, and Godly example have always been an inspiration to me and have shaped who I am today. Thank you, and I love you! - Amanda D. Grateful Dog Thank you soooo much to the wonderful people, a Husband and Wife in a tan colored SUV, and to the woman in the white Honda who took immediate action when they saw me running down the road, trying to catch my dog. These super folks took time to try blocking my dog, then to pull their cars over, chase, and catch my dog. His invisible fence collar has a new battery in it, and it will be on him before he slips out his dog door again. Thank you! - Anna Animal Hospital Praises A huge thanks goes out to Dr. Chris and Megan! Our furry friend slipped a disk in his back late in the afternoon on April 4th. We called York Animal Hospital, and Dr. Chris was leaving within the hour. She was in the emergency care units and told us to get there ASAP. When we arrived, Dr. Chris and Megan were waiting for us. We are now in the third week, and our furry friend is improving every day, taking two steps on April 22nd. A huge thank you to Dr. Chris and Megan, and of course, to the rest of the staff for our regular weekly visits. It's going to be a long road, but we appreciate their concern, service, and all they do for us and others. God bless you all!

Recycling It's pretty sad when you call [local town] Code Enforcement, [local town] Hall, and [others] to find a solution to businesses not recycling, and you pretty much get an answer of "Oh well." No one seems to know or care. So as all these cans, glass, and junk get thrown onto the ground, remember, you have children and grandchildren who have to live on this dirty earth. Why can't people just do the right thing?
Enough already! Am I the only one who’s sick of businesses, companies, services, and retailers overusing the excuse of COVID? Most of these are still trying to increase profits even though supply, laborers, and inflation are affecting all of us. Some still allow personnel to work from home which leaves fewer people to actually provide services to customers. Eliminate the government “freebies” to force people to actually work for their money. Stop giving free money to renters and get them back to work. Quit stealing from the taxpayers and get us back to where we were. The COVID excuse being made is just that: an excuse! Not a Drag Strip! Moving to this beautiful town over 10 years ago was the best decision my family could have made. It’s such a beautiful town with friendly neighbors. However, we couldn’t be more upset with the way most of the younger generations use [local street] in [local town] as a “drag strip." Living on this street is absolutely beautiful, and the 30 miles a hour limit should be enforced. There are many that hit the stop sign on center and then use the straight away as if it’s 390 in a 65mph zone. It’s 30mph or slower. Please slow down. There are autistic children that live in this area as well as family pets. Let’s be safe and slow down. Tomorrows are never guaranteed. We would hate to see something happen to children, walkers, runners, family pets, etc. Slow it down, please!

Serves 4 Turkey Burgers 1 pound ground turkey 1/4 cup fine, dry breadcrumbs 2 tablespoons plain yogurt 1 teaspoon turmeric 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon fine kosher or sea salt Cumin Yogurt Sauce 1/2 cup plain yogurt 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin Kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Toppings 2 large red onions, thickly sliced 2 large beefsteak tomatoes, thickly sliced 4 seeded hamburger buns Olive oil, for brushing Kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 cup shredded lettuce 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro Prepare a medium-hot fire in your grill. In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, yogurt, turmeric, coriander, cumin, and salt until well-blended. Form into four 3/4-inch-thick patties. For the cumin yogurt sauce, combine the cumin and yogurt together in a bowl until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Toss the shredded lettuce and cilantro in a bowl and set aside.
ATHLETES TURNED ACTOR
Lightly brush the sliced onions, tomatoes and cut side of the hamburger buns with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill the patties, onions and tomatoes directly over the fire. Grill the tomatoes for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Turn the burgers once after 7 to 8 minutes, then grill for another 7 to 8 minutes, or until the burgers are no longer pink inside and an instant-read thermometer registers 160 F in the center of each patty. Grill the onions for about 8 to 9 minutes, turning once halfway through the cooking time, or until softened and slightly charred. During the last minutes of grilling, toast the buns, cut side down, directly over the fire. To serve, place a patty on each bun. Top with a slice of grilled onion, tomato and 1/4 cup of lettuce mixture and a dollop of yogurt sauce. Serve the extra grilled onion and tomato slices on the side.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Are Irresponsible Owners the Bane of Dog Parks? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: When I first adopted my Collie mix “Sara,” I went to the dog park near my apartment every morning. I thought it would be a great place for a year-old puppy to socialize with other dogs and humans. A year later, I no longer take her to the dog park if there are any other dogs there -- which means taking pre-dawn walks or bypassing the park entirely. I quickly learned that while many dog owners are responsible people who train and socialize their dogs, others don’t train them at all, or train them inadequately. On Sara’s first day, a huge dog ran up, snarling and barking at both of us. The dog’s owner just sat on a bench, waving and yelling, “He’s friendly,” while Sara cowered behind my legs. A few days later, that same dog got in a vicious fight with two other dogs. Because we continued to have negative experiences with other dogs (and their owners), making it impossible to train and socialize Sara, I’ve stopped going there. I don’t think dog parks are a great idea anymore, even though I live in an urban area and green spaces are important for dogs. What’s your take? -- Hannah J. in Boston DEAR HANNAH: I’m really sorry that happened to Sara and you, and you’re doing the right thing by taking her at uncrowded times. Overcrowded parks, resource-guarding and aggressively playful dogs can make it a negative experience. Dog parks are a community resource, and it’s important for dog owners to work together to make the park work. Find out if there’s a volunteer committee for your particular park. If not, and you want to keep using the dog park, consider forming a group to address behavior and other issues. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com.

President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day an official holiday in 1914. After he was persuaded by Anna Jarvis, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared that the second Sunday of every May would be Mother’s Day. In his first Mother’s Day proclamation, Wilson stated that the holiday offered a chance to “[publicly express] our love and reverence for the mothers of our country,” according to History.com. Honorin You Loved On Ha Neve Bee Easie
Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

Happy Mother’s Day! 9 Global Traditions Inspire Us as We Celebrate Mom BY MAKAYLA HOLLIMAN & ELIJAH ROBINSON
I
t’s that time again! Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to make the mothers in your life feel special, loved, and respected—especially our own mothers who loved us first and continue to love us with unwavering faith. Mother’s Day D is a big event in the United States, but did you know many countries around the world also set aside a special time to celebrate mothers? We gathered fun and unique Mother’s Day traditions from nine countries around the globe, and we hope you find something new to add to your Mother’s Day celebrations!
France
Mother’s Day, “Fête des Mères,” occurs on the last Sunday of May or the first Sunday of June. Fête des Mères originated during the Napoleonic era during which families with a large number of children were presented with medals as part of an effort to promote large families and curb low birth rates. Some parts of France still honor this tradition and present moms with medals on Mother’s Day, known as Médaille de la Famille. It is customary to make a bouquet cake for mom, followed by a family dinner. Children typically give flowers, jewelry, perfumes, handmade gifts, handwritten poems, and chocolates as presents.
Germany
Mother’s Day, celebrated on the second Sunday of May, is known as Muttertag and was first celebrated in 1922. Here, celebrating mothers extends further than the women of the house; it pays tribute to the mothers of the universe. Carried out with a high degree of pomp and circumstance, this day sees children give their moms gifts and cards, red carnations celebrating mothers who are alive, and white carnations honoring mothers who have passed away. Surprises are common, and travel tickets are a traditional present. The family also makes a homemade dinner to give mom a break.
Ethiopia
Ethiopia holds its celebration of mothers in the early fall and hosts festivals that honor its religion. Ethiopia holds a festival called “Antrosht” which is dedicated only to moms. Families come together for large meals and celebrations. Daughters bring vegetables and cheese while sons bring meat, prepare meat hash, and stage performances featuring their family heroes.
India
Like Ethiopia, India also holds its celebration of mothers in the early fall and hosts festivals that honor its religion. In India, this celebration lasts for 10 days. Hindus honor Durga, the goddess of mothers, at the Durga Puja festival. This religious ceremony hosts family reunions centered around the traditional story of how Durga returns to her parents to show her own children off to them. The festivities continue with making food, giving gifts and decorating homes.
Italy
In Italy, mothers are honored on “La Festa della Mamma,” observed the second Sunday of May. The mother is regarded as the most important person in the family, and children must call if they cannot come home that day. While she is honored year-round, on this day, she is pampered from dawn to dusk. Small presents, roses, and handwritten poetry are popular gifts, while cards are not commonly given. Lunch is eaten out to give moms a break, and

at the end of the day, mothers receive a heart-shaped cake made for them by their children.
Japan
Japan’s customs for Mother’s Day are entirely different. Here, the holiday was revived after World War II and was used to console mothers who had lost children during the war. Today, Mother’s Day is observed on the second Sunday of May with red or pink carnations as well as help with chores and cooking. Japanese families make traditional Tamagoyaki or Chawanmushi dishes, while children make handmade gifts or portraits for their mothers.
Mexico
In Mexico, Mother’s Day—“La Dia de la Madre”—is celebrated on May 10th. Each year, women are celebrated with mariachi serenades, special mass services, and children’s performances. They are also treated out to lunches and dinners. No matter what day May 10th falls on, Mexican families always make time to celebrate their mothers.
Peru
One of Peru’s most important events, Mother’s Day, is celebrated for an entire week with much anticipation leading up to the second Sunday of May. This celebration honors not only mothers, but all the women in the home. Families organize lunches, dinners, parties and trips throughout the week, and children prepare events and festivities. Mothers are given the opportunity to visit exhibits, museums, and festivals for free. They are also read poetry and stories, given gifts, flowers, and treats, served dinner, and entertained by their children. Peruvian families also visit cemeteries to honor their dearly departed mothers and grandmothers, bringing flowers, balloons, and other salutations for the graves. No mother is forgotten in this showing of appreciation for a mother’s love and sacrifice.
United Kingdom
British families hold Mother’s Day, referred to as Mothering Sunday, on the 4th Sunday of Lent. Dating back to the 1600s, England was the first country in the world to create a holiday specifically for celebrating mothers. Shifting away from its historic roots as a day of showing respect to one’s “mother church,” Mothering Sunday increasingly centered around celebrating moms across Britain. Flowers are the most popular gifts, and the most common types of flowers children give their mothers are roses, carnations, and chrysanthemums. It is also traditional to give mum a rich almond cake called ‘Mothering Cake’ or ‘Simnel Cake.’

DID YOU KNOW? Firms on the lookout for ways to manage employees’ time more efficiently may want to reconsider their approach to meetings. A recent study on meetings commissioned by Verizon Conferencing found that an overwhelming majority of professionals who are considered heavy meeting-goers admitted to an array of behaviors that suggest meetings aren’t as productive as employers may believe. Ninety-six percent of respondents admitted to having missed meetings in the past, while 91 percent acknowledged daydreaming during meetings. In addition, 73 percent of respondents did other work during a meeting, while 39 percent acknowledged falling asleep.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Go easy on yourself. While many successful people strive for perfection, achieving perfection is unlikely, if not impossible. Successful people often admit to being their own worst critics, but don’t beat yourself up if you endure some trial and error. Mistakes can be a great teacher, so use any you make to your advantage. BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.
