GRADUATION ETIQUETTE Handle limited seats with courtesy. Many schools limit the number of seats each student can reserve for guests. This can make it tricky when there are a number of people who are worthy of an invite. Explain to friends and family who you cannot invite that you would love to have them there but are restricted by ticket allotments. Try to have both sides of the family represented. Usually an invite to the after-party will thwart any hard feelings.

PRACTICAL GIFTS FOR RECENT GRADUATES Travel tickets: Treat graduates to a trip away from home. Travelers often gain new perspectives and inspiration when visiting a city, state or country for the first time. Travel is good for future entrepreneurs and may help a person stand out in a long list of job applicants. According to Forbes.com, travel can help cultivate relationships outside of one’s existing network and provide ideas from others outside of graduates’ existing personal and professional circles.

GRADUATION ETIQUETTE Formal invites translate to gifts. Anyone who receives an invitation is obligated to give the graduate a gift. Give grads their gifts in person, even if you cannot attend the ceremony. If you live far away and won’t be in attendance, arrange for the gift to arrive as close to the ceremony date as possible.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A green cat was born in Denmark in 1995. Some people believe that high levels of copper in the water pipes nearby may have given his fur a verdigris effect. * Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of the iconic jungle man Tarzan, worked as a pencil-sharpener salesman before trying his hand at fiction. He only started writing at the age of 36 to support his wife and two kids. * Boanthropy is a psychological disorder in which patients believe they are a cow. * The infamous crocodile jump by James Bond in "Live and Let Die" was performed with real crocs by the only person willing to attempt it -- the owner of the crocodile farm. * In early 2015, Mattel released Hello Barbie, an interactive talking doll that didn't just repeat preprogrammed phrases, but could actually hold a two-way conversation. The doll raised major concerns over privacy, however, since the discussions between it and child owners were recorded and sent to third-party vendors. Goodbye, Barbie! Dust Mite Allergy Triggers Cough

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: For months, I have had a persistent cough that I have been unable to get help with. I saw an allergist about three years ago and was told I am allergic to dust mites. I was first referred to a lung doctor where X-rays showed that my cheek sinus drains were completely blocked, and then to an ear, nose and throat doctor, who also confirmed this diagnosis. This ENT doctor recommended I have surgery to unblock the drains and clear out the sinus area. I understand that sinus drainage can cause coughing and wonder if this would still make me cough. I sometimes cough until I can cough up something, and this seems to stop my cough for a while. I was using a nasal rinse for a while until about two weeks ago when it caused my nose to bleed. The ENT doctor prescribed antibiotics and oral steroids that did not make any difference. It doesn’t seem to make any difference whether I’m home or sitting in the doctor’s office, I’m still coughing. What is the best way to deal with dust mite allergy? -- J.S. ANSWER: There are many causes of chronic cough, but postnasal drip is at the top of the list. Dust mites are indeed a common allergen, and symptoms may include runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing and cough from postnasal drip. Specific treatment for dust mites should include physical barriers, such as covers for pillows and mattresses, and sometimes for other soft surfaces, like furniture cushions, but this is only part of an effective strategy. Removing as many fabrics as possible (draperies, carpets, stuffed children’s toys) where dust mites can live is essential. Regular cleaning is necessary, and high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters for vacuuming have been shown to reduce dust mites. A low-humidity environment can be very effective in discouraging dust mites, and cooler air -- especially at night -- can reduce irritation of nasal passages caused by dry air. Many interventions for a prolonged period are necessary to reduce dust mite infestation and the symptoms associated with them. This is critical, because the issue of the sinuses is probably secondary to ongoing allergic exposure. Fixing your sinuses will not fix your ongoing symptoms. Without control of the allergens, you will continue to have symptoms and may even develop sinus blockages again, no matter how good a job the surgeon does on your sinuses.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Is a 3-Legged Dog Worth Adopting? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have an opportunity to adopt a wonderful three-legged, overweight, 4-year-old Shepherd. I’m happy to help him lose the weight, as I already walk 2 to 4 miles almost every day. However, I’m not sure if he can walk those distances. Can he be trained to walk with me that far? Do you think he would be able to swim for exercise? -- Donna P., via email DEAR DONNA: I’ve met so many animals that, despite a challenge such as a missing limb or paralysis, are still energetic and participate in every facet of life that they can. Your potential new family member may be able to train up to walking a couple of miles, eventually. He’s young enough, and Shepherds are certainly energetic enough. His extra weight will make it difficult to manage on three legs. You can best control his weight through a diet prescribed by a veterinarian, rather than relying on exercise alone. Don’t just cut calories without guidance, as he will need to eat good-quality food to put on muscle and get strong enough to walk with you. Swimming, if he is comfortable doing it, can be a great option to keep him exercising while putting much less stress on his joints. Introduce him to this activity gradually, and don’t force him into the water. Some dogs leap right in (I’m lookin’ at you, Labradors), while others are hesitant. If you’re still on the fence about adopting this wonderful boy, talk to a veterinarian to find out what challenges you will face in getting him to a healthy weight. Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural.

* Help for a sunburn: Take two nonsteroidal antiinflammatories (aspirin, ibuprofen) right away. Soak a cloth in cold milk and drape over the burn until it warms to room temperature. Repeat if necessary and apply a light moisturizer. * Use your Christmas light timers to set different lights to go on or off at certain times of the day while you are away on vacation. You can even use a timer on a radio, so it comes on sometimes too. The variation will make people think you are home.

Q&A with Bob Hobday, Director of the Antique Wireless Museum in Bloomfield: Part I BY DP DUNN

O

nly a few generations ago, news took days or weeks to travel and was carried either by mail, printed news, or visitors from afar. Mr. Samuel Morse, his wonderful code, and companies like Western Union, founded in Rochester, NY, made communication vastly more efficient. However, Mr. Marconi blended several scientific and technological advancements to create the magic of nearly instantaneous communication across heretofore unimaginable distances! Then it was called wireless. Now, it is called radio. And its history lives just around the corner in Bloomfield. Nestled in the small town of Bloomfield, on Routes 5 & 20 sits an unassuming collection of buildings, housing a world-class assembly of vintage and modern communications equipment. The museum was founded in 1952 by three Kodak engineers who saw the need to preserve original wireless technology and its history. We sat with Bob Hobday, Director of the Antique Wireless Museum, and asked him a few questions. We invite you to pull up a chair and join us! What are three facts about the Museum that you wished people in the area knew? The AWA Museum has a world-class collection with many oneof-a-kind items. We are a museum of the history of communication technology spanning almost 200 years: from Telegraph equipment dating to the early 1800s to wireless text messaging and cell phones – today and beyond. Our Museum has something for all ages. How has the magic of radio influenced your life? When I was a boy of about 11, I was diagnosed with rheumatic fever, and the doctor said I had to go bed for a year. Radio became my friend and my window on the world (no TV in our house at that time). I would listen to the big Silvertone console radio for hours each day. I have been interested in radio ever since. What are a few of the most interesting items in the Museum’s collection? • Samuel Morse’s personal notebook in which is the design of first commercial telegraph line built in the US from Washington to Baltimore in 1844. • The world’s first cell phone. • The first frequency modulation (FM) transmitter used in the Empire State Building to demonstrate that FM radio worked. • Replica of the Titanic radio room using radio equipment of that era. • A 1000-watt spark transmitter is demonstrated. • The first TV camera in Rochester in 1949. • The control room and 250,000-watt transmitter from the Voice of America station in Delano, California. • The world’s first transistor radio built by Bell Labs. Tell us about the Museum’s ‘Hollywood connection’ and some of the films the Museum has been involved with? In January 2020, a film company from Pittsburgh creating a feature length film on the Titanic entitled “Unsinkable,” rented the Museum for two days in order to use the Titanic radio room exhibit for their movie and to engage the Museum staff ’s knowledge. It was fascinating. Older folks remember radio entertainment and technology, but why would tech-savvy younger people enjoy the Museum? For older folks, it is visit of nostalgia – “Oh, I had one of those.” “I remember using one of those.” Then come the memories of Mom & Dad, family events, the service, jobs, kids. The stories are wonderful. Young folks like Morse Code – not what you expect – but they really enjoy learning Morse Code, the big typewriter (a teletype machine), the Titanic radio room, the wall phones they can talk on as

Photo 1: Titanic wireless room desk Photo 2: The world’s first cell phone: 1977! well as the big first cell phone (and it isn’t even portable)! We had seven classes of 4th graders visit the Museum a couple of years ago and I was showing two young ladies the world’s first cell phone. One of them got a puzzled look on her face and asked, “Where is the screen?” I said, “It didn’ t have a screen.” She thought for a moment and asked, “How did you do text messaging?” I said “You couldn’t do text messaging. That came much later.” The museum also offers a “Radio Fab Lab” for youngsters 7 to 15. This is a chance to learn some fundamental electronics, a bit of history, and build a useful circuit to take home. The classes are built to supplement the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) teaching philosophy. These are just a few. There are really too many to list here. Hey You! To the young man in the little purple car that seems to think he has to speed through town. Your plate number has been turned into the cops. Slow down! There are young children here.

S E V RA St. Agnes Cemetery Many, many thanks to Jim Harrington for his organization, expert tree trimming, and volunteer hours at St. Agnes Cemetery! For five weeks, Jim selflessly gave of his time and talent in trimming trees and has earned that halo that only good people can see! Special thanks to Matt Weslowsk, The Gerwig Family, Kevin Van Allen, Richard Burke, Ken Farrell, Russ Ruter, Mike Cochrane, Sheriff Tom Dougherty, George Eblacker, Jerry Dupont, Jerry Dougherty, Tom Crye and crew, and a bunch of Avon Central students who donated their time. The St. Agnes Cemetery looks beautiful thanks to these wonderful volunteers! We live in such an awesome, caring community! Many thanks! I just wanted to say thank you to the person who turned in my social security card at Lowe’s in Hornell. I accidentally left the zipper on my wallet open, and it had fallen out in the parking lot, much to my dismay. It’s so nice to know that there are still good people in this world. Thanks again! Thank you, patriot! During a March wind storm, the American flag in front of a building on Main Street was ripped. The flag continued to rip during following windy days. I am grateful to the person who replaced the flag with an even bigger flag. Several times a day, I look at the flag and thank God that I live in America. Kindness I was shopping in a local plaza, came out of the store and couldn’t find my car, and started to look. A lady got out of her car and started to help, then another and another, until four ladies were looking for my car. I told them no worries, I will find it, but they insisted and kept looking until they found it! (As you know, all cars look alike now. ) I thanked them so much and realized that is why we live in a small town where people are kind and would take the trouble to do that for a complete stranger. I hope they read this and know it’s for them. Thank you again!

Frustrated I have 2 rants relating to customer service: 1. I called [local newspaper] to stop delivery while I was on vacation. I answered the recorded questions and received a confirmation email. The paper was delivered during my absence anyway. When I called to ask what happened, all I received was an apology. 2. I called to hold my mail. I followed the recording and was hung up on and tried again and could not get through. I had to wait an hour for a call back to schedule the mail hold. My mail was not delivered on the day I requested. I called the 800 number and had to wait an hour and a half before someone called me back to tell me they would contact the [local town] office. I called the [local town] office, but no one answered the phone. At 7:30am the next morning, someone from the [local town] office called to tell me my mail would be delivered that day. I asked what happened and was told a sub did not pick up the hold mail. I had a great vacation but a frustrating return home. Choices Who likes to be told what to do? Not many in my opinion, so don’t tell others what to do if you don’t like being told what to do. However, most of the people I know who hate being told what to do are the first ones to tell others what to do. So what is the solution? Live and let live. God will take care of the rest. Love your pets? Can’t believe people walking their dogs on hot, hot pavement in the middle of the day with temperatures soaring over 90. Why not find a shady area, or go early in the AM? Poor animals! And, to the convertible driver, top down, temp 92, dog in the back seat with no cover available: consider the heat or sun stroke in animals! Water is needed! Too bad for the dog that he has that owner. Think a bit sensibly and responsibly. Also, there is a gorgeous dog near me in a electric fenced area with no one paying attention to him, and every time a person walks by, the dog looks up near his toy ball, hoping for someone to throw it, or at least pay attention. Why own a pet?

The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.
