I winter over amaryllis bulbs. This year the four I planted all have tall, beautiful, greens but no flowers came. If I keep them might they bloom next year?

While people often treat them as annuals, you can get amaryllis to rebloom next year.As flowers begin to fade,cut them off to prevent seed formation.Allowing seeds to form depletes energy resources and can lead to reduced blooming in subsequent years. Wait to remove the flower stalk until it begins to yellow. The flower stalk can photosynthesize (like leaves) and create energy/food stored for future flower growth.Leave the amaryllis leaves.As with other bulbs, like tulips and daffodils, the

leaves create energy/food so the plants can bloom again.

After your amaryllis is done blooming, place it in a bright indoor location (a window with southern exposure is best). Water regularly and fertilize monthly with an all-purpose houseplant or indoor plant fertilizer (follow the directions on the label).

Amaryllis can be taken outdoors after frost risk. Place them in an area that receives filtered sunlight at first, and then gradually move to where it will get a minimum of six hours of sunlight a day. Continue to water and fertilize as needed. In the fall, bring the amaryllis indoors before the first frost.

For amaryllis to rebloom, they need to be exposed to cool temperatures for a period. This can be done by forcing your plants into dormancy by placing them in a cool (45 to 55°F), dark location. The bulb needs a resting period of approximately 8-12 weeks before it can bloom again. During this time, do not water the plants. Once the leaves yellow, they can be removed.

While in this resting period, periodically inspect the bulbs. If they begin to grow, place them in a sunny window. If they don’tstarttogrowontheirown,forcenew growth by watering the soil thoroughly and putting them back in a warmer, sunnylocation.Whenbulbsshowsignsof growth, resume watering and fertilizing. Flowers will usually develop about 4-6 weeks after this dormant period.

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS

Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well.

First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs.

The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED

• Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place.

• Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go.

• Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery.

• Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized.

• Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates.

• Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible.

• Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion.

• Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

Beware of Some “Natural” Flea and Deworming Treatments

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I want my dog to be healthy and to use natural treatments as much as possible. So I don’t like giving her conventional, mainstream ea and tick chewables or making her wear a chemical-laced collar. And if I have to deworm her, I don’t want to give her medications that carry a risk of side e ects. But I’m also seeing a lot of products that are touted as “natural” that contain ingredients that are pretty questionable -- like garlic tablets for dogs! (Garlic is toxic to dogs and cats, if you’re wondering.) Can you let your readers know that it’s very important to read the labels and make sure a natural supplement is actually safe? -- Rebecca in Winchester, Virginia

DEAR REBECCA: You told them, and I thank you. Many “natural” ea and tick preventatives exist today, but reading the label is imperative.

Over-the-counter treatments and preventatives are not as tightly regulated as prescription medications given by veterinarians. ey may contain ingredients that are known to be harmful to dogs and cats -- like garlic, onion or tobacco. And they are generally less e ective at prevention, and o en completely ine ective for treating an active infestation.

ere’s a risk that over-the-counter and “natural” medications can make your pet as ill -- or even sicker -- than the vet’s recommended medication. Treating parasitic infestations in pets can be tough, and it’s important to balance the type of treatment with the health of the pet.

MORCILLA CON SETAS (BLOOD SAUSAGE WITH MUSHROOMS, SPRING PEAS AND MINT OIL)

Serves 4

1 pound morcilla blood sausage

1 pound mushrooms, sliced

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 cloves garlic, slivered

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons white wine

1 cup shelled spring peas

1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint

2 tablespoons mint oil

Mint Oil

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1/2 cup chopped mint

Pinch of salt

Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas.

In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side. Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil.

For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette.

Possible Heart Disease Symptoms Are Written Off Due to Weight

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been experiencing pain in my chest, dizziness and shortness of breath on exertion. The chest pain lasts for a few hours. At one point, it was so bad that I couldn’t walk a hundred feet, had to use a cane and severely limit my physical activity. I’ve been to the doctor about this before. They take an EKG, which comes back normal, so they chalk it up to anxiety, then tell me I’m fat. (I am not unaware that I’m fat, but even when I was doing intense martial arts twice a week, I couldn’t lose the weight. And my physical therapist told me not to do yoga.)

If it makes a difference, I’m also a Type 2 diabetic and have fibromyalgia as well as PTSD. This is not the only issue that doctors have refused to treat because they decide to blame it all on my weight. My diabetes went unchecked for a while because my doctor only told me to lose weight, instead of ordering blood tests when I complained about the symptoms. When these symptoms happen, my friends tell me to go to the doctor, but they don’t do anything to change the situation. Why should I pay over $1,000 and waste a few hours for an urgent care visit and an EKG only to get told that I’m fat and anxious, when I can cover my chest with stickers, play on my phone and tell myself I’m fat at home for free? Who’s right, me or my friends? -- S.T.

ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear how poorly you are being treated. I have heard from many people that doctors do not take symptoms seriously in people who are overweight or obese. (There is strong evidence that this is true, and that women and people of color are also treated worse systemically. People with any mental health issue, such as anxiety or PTSD, are often disbelieved.)

While I understand that you are frustrated, your symptoms are very concerning. Particularly if you are over 50, they are highly suggestive of heart disease -- especially in a person with diabetes, which increases risk of heart disease. Given your poor experience, how much you are paying and your PTSD, I can absolutely understand why you are reluctant to go. However, you deserve to get good care, and I believe you will be able to find a doctor who can treat you well and not automatically write off any complaint due to your weight and anxiety. I’d recommend you be completely honest about your concerns.

When I have a patient with multiple ER or acute care visits for possible heart disease, I often recommend a more definitive test than an EKG and blood testing, which is the usual acute care evaluation when looking for damage to the heart muscle. This may be a coronary CT angiogram, which is highly sensitive and specific. (The weight limit for this test depends on the scanner, but is typically 450 pounds.)

If you have blockages in your heart causing your recurrent symptoms, it needs to be treated to prevent a heart attack. If blockages aren’t the cause, the EKGs usually aren’t helpful, and you’ll need a different type of evaluation to find out where these symptoms are coming from.

COLD MEDICINE INGREDIENTS CAN RAISE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE

(NAPSI)—There’s a reason it’s called the “common” cold: Adults have an average two to three colds per year and children even more, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Problem

Most people recover from a cold within a week to 10 days. But decongestants may raise blood pressure or interfere with the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications, according to the American Heart Association.

Read The Label

Be sure to read labels on over-the-counter (OTC) medications, especially if you have high blood pressure (HBP). Some contain decongestants such as oxymetazoline, phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine.

You should also look for warnings related to high blood pressure or HBP medication and talk to your health care professional before taking OTC medications or supplements.And don’t stop taking prescribed medications without talking to your doctor.

Some OTCs are also high in sodium, which can raise blood pressure. So look at the active and inactive ingredients lists for the words “sodium” or “soda.” If you have high blood pressure, you should consume less than 1,500 mg of sodium a day from all sources—and one dose of some OTCs can contain more than a whole day’s allowance.

Be Careful With Supplements Or Natural (Naturopathic) Remedies Special pills, vitamins or drinks don’t substitute for prescription medications and lifestyle modifications. Talk to your health care provider before taking any OTC drug or supplement that claims to lower your blood pressure. They may not work as advertised and may interfere with other medications. Some, like natural licorice and diet pills, can even raise your blood pressure.

What Else To Watch For

Other drugs and substances that can raise your blood pressure include:

• Alcohol

• Amphetamines

• Antidepressants

• Atypical Antipsychotics (such as clozapine and olanzapine)

• Caffeine

• Oral Contraceptives

• Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs: ibuprofen and naproxen sodium, for example)

• Illicit Drugs

• Systemic Corticosteroids (for example, prednisone and methylprednisolone)

When I was walking my dogs, these kids had a loud speaker playing rude music on max volume.Then they started to shout disrespectful comments to me and my dogs. Where are these kids’ parents?!

Shame on man who cussed out preschool child

On Saturday afternoon, 6/17/23, shame on the man who abruptly stopped his blue 4 door sedan in [a parking lot] across from [fast food restaurant] to cuss out a child. The man exited his car, opened the driver side rear door to shout obscenities at what appeared to be a pre-schooler strapped into a car seat in the back. The man then grabbed the child’s drink and threw it on the ground. Then he called the child a disgusting name, slammed the door, and proceeded to take off in the car at about 50 mph in the mall lot. Shame on you as an adult to act like that to anyone, much less a child. Still shocked by this unacceptable behavior! :O

Ridiculously Rough Railroad Tracks

Who’s responsible for repairing rough railroad tracks… the railroad, the town, the county? This well traveled rural road has tracks in front of the railroad and you have to just about stop to TRY to save your vehicle from the wear and tear. Recently, other tracks around this area were repaired and they’re smooth sailing now. Somehow this set was skipped over, and in my opinion, these were worse than the others. Anybody know whose responsibility it is for the repair?

• Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for themandtheirfamilies,ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level.

• Limit the distance. Children won’t be able to put in as many miles as their parents or older

Going for a bike ride is one of the best ways for people to exercise in fresh air. Cycling is not only earth-conscious and convenient, but it also is a fun & popular activity that families can enjoy. siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised.

• Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session.

• Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to

anticipate stopping along the way.

• Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guidesandreadreviewsaswell.

Rochesterians Turn Out in Dreary Weather to Show Support for 11th Annual NAMI Walk

The mental health battle is one that no one should ever have to ght alone. On May 20th, hundreds of people came out for the 11h annual NAMI walk in Rochester, NY. Americans have recognized May as Mental Health Awareness month since 1949. e National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is recognized for its motto that “It’s now how far we walk, but how far we’ve come.”

7-800 Rochesterians turned out in the rainy weather to walk the route through the Neighborhood of the Arts to show support and let those struggling with mental health issues know they do not have to su er in silence. Local businesses and organizations such as Wegmans, the University of Rochester, Villa of Hope, Excellus BCBS, and Everyone Needs a Little Assistance Sometimes (ENALAS) sponsored May’s NAMI event, and many other sponsors attended to extend their support.

Despite the adverse weather conditions, the infectious enthusiasm of the day’s event le participants in good spirits. e path to wellness starts with community engagement and NAMI is just one of the local organizations in our community making an impact in e ort to expand the dialogue about mental well-being.

NAMI CEO Kristina Mossgraber says, “It’s important to talk about mental health because that’s how we’re going to break down the stigma. e reality is we are hearing about mental health more than ever but that’s where the opportunity comes to have those conversations. It o ers teachable moments to people and to challenge that stigma.”

According to Mossgraber, the purpose of organizations such as NAMI is multi-faceted. Local people in the community regardless of insurance or nancial status can reap the bene ts of their programs. She says, “We o er classes at no cost, we do yoga, journaling, and vision board

Wayland, NY – Petersham, MA: Mary Yvonne Bryant died peacefully at home after a long life and short illness surrounded by her children on May 23, 2023 at the spry age of 94.

Yvonne was a devoted and supportive mother who always knew just what to say in any circumstance. Her family, friends and anyone who met her will miss her warmth and charm. She worked at the former UTD where she met and fell for Stuart Bryant. ey were married July 26, 1952 in Athol, MA and celebrated over 41 years together prior to Stuart passing away in May of 1993. While raising her family she waitressed for many years at the Fox Run Restaurant.Later she owned and operated “Bryant Realty”while caring for her ailing husband. She was a devout Catholic, talented artisan and an enthusiastic card shark!

Yvonne lived most of her life in Massachusetts and in 2014 she moved to Wayland. Her children would like to thank the special ladies from the Wayland area who welcomed her with open arms at the age of 86. While in Wayland she was very active at the Wayland Free Library and their di erent programs that included Bone Builders, Book Club and Trust in the Lives of Older Women. She enjoyed exercising, reading and sewing.

Yvonne was predeceased by her parents, Alexander and Roseanna (Arsenault) Labrie; her husband, Stuart Bryant; her siblings, Paul, Zenon, Romeo and Edgar Labrie, Emelda Luippold and Bernadette Chaisson.

Yvonne was Mom to Mary (Scott) Brown, Michael (Marlise) Bryant, Joan Dubrule (David Stiles) and Patricia (Daniel) Stephens; Gramma to Kevin Dubrule (Jaime Page), Alex (Katie) Bryant, Kyle (Jamie) Stephens, Leah (Lance) Ratchford, Makela Brown (Alex DeLorenzo) and Parker Brown; GiGi to Bentley, Indie, Nola Yvonne, Jalen and Jordan; Sister to Joseph (Ruth) Labrie; Sister-in-law to Ann Mayers and Marilyn Richardson; along with many many nieces and nephews.

Primary responsibilities include managing the print and digital distribution of our award-winning GVPS and other publications across Western New York.

Prior experience is not required but helpful skillsets include: knowledge of the United States Post Office, experience with direct mail, managing a small fleet of carriers, and digital media. Must be organized and dedicated to the long-term success of the company. The candidate should also have a customer service mindset when dealing with readers and advertisers.
