Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

Market: The real estate market is another factor to consider when deciding if the time is right to downsize. A seller’s market can help seniors get the biggest return on their real estate investment, potentially helping them make up for meager retirement savings. For example, home prices skyrocketed across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, making that a great time for sellers to put their homes on the market. Seniors selling to downsize may capitalize on such spikes since they won’t be looking to turn around and buy larger, equally expensive homes once they sell their current place. If the market is down and seniors can withstand the work and cost a little longer, it may be best to wait until things bounce back in sellers’ favor.

HOMETOWN AVOID HOT WEATHER AUTOMOTIVE BREAKDOWNS

AUTO SECTION

Excessive heat can shorten the life of a battery because it causes battery fluid to evaporate more quickly. This, in turn, can damage the internal structure of the battery. AAA reports that car battery issues are the most common breakdown calls. It’s a good idea to top off a battery with distilled water if it is the kind that requires it. Low-maintenance batteries may not have filler caps and will not require water. Inspect the battery for corrosion and leakage of battery acid. This could be a sign that the battery is getting old and will need to be replaced.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Chest CT Can’t Replace Screening Mammogram ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am due to have a mammogram in July, but around the same time I am supposed to have a chest CT as a follow-up to my chondrosarcoma cancer. I have a CT every other year, and an X-ray on the opposite years of both my affected arm and my lungs. Does a chest CT have the potential of showing a similar finding as a mammogram? I would just as soon not have to expose myself to so much radiation all in one month. I’m 66. There is a history of postmenopausal breast cancer in my family, in my mother’s mother. -- T.M.H. ANSWER: A mammogram is an X-ray that is designed specifically to look for abnormalities in breast tissue. Mammograms have been extensively studied and proven to reduce mortality in women between the ages of 50-74 (outside these ages, there remains extreme controversy). CT scans are X-rays taken from many angles and then reconstructed in a computer to provide a look at many slices of the part of the body being looked at. A CT scanner can be set to emphasize bones or soft tissue, and work is ongoing now with CT scans designed specifically for breast abnormalities. The CT scan you get as follow-up to your chondrosarcoma (a rare cancer of cartilage) is designed to look in lung tissue for abnormalities and has not been evaluated as a means of screening for breast cancer, although I do know that some may be found anecdotally. The CT scans you get as a part of your cancer followup are not an adequate substitute for ongoing mammography, which is particularly important in your case due to a family history. I do understand the concern about radiation, but a mammogram has very little radiation -- approximately the same you would get from naturally occurring radiation sources in seven weeks of walking around. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury. Page 8

CACFL Earns Reaccreditation from National Children’s Alliance BY MARISA ENZINA

T

he Child Advocacy Center of the Finger Lakes (CACFL) has been awarded reaccreditation by National Children’s Alliance following an extensive application and site review process. As the accrediting agency for Children’s Advocacy Centers (CAC) across the country, National Children’s Alliance awards various levels of accreditation and membership to centers responding to allegations of child abuse in ways that are effective and efficient and put the needs of child victims of abuse first. Accreditation is the highest level of membership with National Children’s Alliance and denotes excellence in service provision. Accredited CACs must undergo a reaccreditation process every five years to ensure that best practices are continually being applied. With accreditation standards being updated in 2017, reaccreditation this year reflects the CACFL’s commitment to providing evidence-based methods practice. The CACFL first opened its doors in 2008 as a program of the Partnership of Ontario County. The CACFL first received accreditation from the National Children’s Alliance in 2012 and became an independent non-profit organization in 2019. The CACFL serves approximately 300 children each year in Ontario, Seneca and Yates counties. As an Accredited Member of National Children’s Alliance, the CACFL is dedicated to providing comprehensive, coordinated and compassionate services to victims of child abuse.

National Children’s Alliance also considers standards regarding a center’s cultural competency and diversity, forensic interviews, victim support and advocacy, medical evaluation, therapeutic intervention, and child-focused setting. “The Child Advocacy Center of the Finger Lakes is to be commended for its continued commitment to effectively serving victims of child abuse. As the national association and accrediting body for Children’s Advocacy Centers across the country, our goal is to ensure that every victim “The Child of child abuse has access to Advocacy Center of high quality services that the Finger Lakes is result from professional to be commended for its continued collaboration. National Children’s Alliance awards Accredited Membership based on a CAC’s compliance with 10 national standards of accreditation to ensure effective, efficient and consistent delivery of services to child abuse victims. 585-485-3255 HOW TO KEEP OUTDOOR LIVING AREAS SAFE Consider fencing. Fencing can make an outdoor living space more private and safe. Local laws may mandate that pools be enclosed with fencing, but even living spaces without pools can be made safer with the installation of a fence. Firepits are wildly popular, as more than 35 percent of homeowners who responded to the ICFA survey acknowledged their intention to purchase new firepits in 2021. Adding fencing around areas with firepits establishes boundaries, which is a must for homeowners with small children. Fencing also makes it harder for local wildlife to gain access to a property, which can decrease residents’ risk for tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Fourth of July Fireworks Can Traumatize Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Please remind your readers that the noise and flash of fireworks can traumatize pets! Last year, my son and his partner took their dog “Bliss” to a Fourth of July festival. Someone set off a string of firecrackers a few feet from the booth they were visiting. Bliss bolted and pulled her leash out of my son’s hand. She ran straight out into the road. Luckily, the cars all stopped, and one of the drivers caught her. Afterward she remained very anxious. Bliss now takes medication to stay calm, and it’s difficult to take her to unfamiliar places. Please urge people not to set off fireworks; go to a professional display and leave the pets at home. -- Judith in Lake City, Florida DEAR JUDITH: You told them, and I thank you! I’m very sorry to hear that Bliss was traumatized, and I hope your son is able, through medication and training, to improve her confidence. Bliss’ parents didn’t do anything wrong in taking her to the festival, but their experience shows how others’ irresponsibility can have consequences for pets, and that owners have to be alert and ready to handle potential problems. The Fourth of July can be a trying day for pets. Crowded parties and loud fireworks can really stress them out. Large fireworks displays are no different than big thunderstorms to most pets, and should be treated as such. If fireworks will be within earshot of your home this holiday, prepare a safe area for your pet to shelter where the noise will not bother it as badly. If a ThunderShirt works for your dog (or cat), use it. Don’t bring pets to fireworks displays, and if you’re setting off backyard fireworks, put your pets inside.

Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

CONCRETE PATIOS/SIDEWALKS

MAKE THE MOST OF LIMITED SPACE Discard some items. Homeowners who are downsizing from large homes may need to part with some of their furniture to make their transition to smaller homes go more smoothly. For example, homeowners may need to get by with just one bedroom nightstand and may even need to replace their existing nightstands with something more compact. Discarding living room end tables and downsizing to a smaller coffee table also can help homeowners make smaller common areas more welcoming and less cluttered.

DID YOU KNOW? When tending to their lawns, homeowners are advised to pay attention to areas that may feature standing water. According to the World Health Organization, standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can breed in great numbers in pools of water. Mosquitoes are known to carry diseases like malaria, West Nile virus and Zika. Furthermore, mosquitoes that bite pets can transmit heartworms, a serious problem if gone it goes undiscovered. Standing water also can be a haven for bacteria, mold and parasites that are dangerous to human health. If standing, stagnant water is a problem in your yard, remediation is necessary. Directing downspouts away from the house can remediate standing water. Changing the grading of soil so that low spots are elevated is another way to reduce instances of standing water. This may be a project that requires the assistance of a drainage professional. In addition, homeowners can remove standing water from empty flower pots, pool covers, bird baths, and more to reduce the likelihood that mosquitoes will appear on their properties.

COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES Dirty grill: Make sure the grill is cleaned before and after each use. Grease can quickly build up on a grill, leading to flare-ups that can cause foods to char. Frequent cleaning also helps grillmasters avoid a tiresome cleaning process at the start of the season.

TYPES OF AERATORS Slicing aerator: According to Pennington, slicing aerators employ rotating blades that slice through thatch and down into the soil. These aerators leave the soil in the ground.

Why mulch? Mulching can benefit plants around a property in various ways. Many people lay mulch because the mulch helps soil retain moisture in the summer, when temperatures tend to be at their hottest. This can help plants survive summer heat waves. Mulch also can be used to suppress weeds. Weeds, which steal moisture plants need to build strong roots and survive summer, need light to grow. When laid correctly, mulch deprives weeds of the light they need to grow. Organic mulches can even provide homes for crickets and a type of beetle that feed on weed seeds. Mulch also can deter harmful pests depending on the type of mulch homeowners choose. When purchasing mulch, homeowners will have to choose between the aforementioned organic mulch or man-made mulches, which may be made of plastic or rubber. While man-made mulches may repel pests, they also can have adverse effects. Plastic, for example, can heat up in the summer and cause plants to burn. Certain organic mulches can repel insects that can threaten plants. That’s because the majority of organic mulches increase the amount of beneficial bacteria in the soil, and they also increase the presence of helpful insects that do not pose a threat to plant life. Those helpful insects help keep harmful insects at bay. Compost is a type of organic mulch that may attract harmful insects. While that does not mean homeowners should shy away from using compost as mulch, they should know that they may need to employ organic insecticides to combat their unwanted guests.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Here’s How I Saved on Prescription Drugs

The price of prescription drugs has, like everything else, inched up. In some cases, the cost has made a massive, sudden jump, and it comes as a shock when you check out at the pharmacy. But there are ways around this horrible surprise. I recently discovered a way to save a lot of money ($80 on a 90-day prescription) by doing two things: I changed pharmacies, and I started using GoodRx. Here’s how: Go to the GoodRx website (goodrx.com) and put in your ZIP code so that all the local pharmacies show up. Enter the name of the drug you take, as well as the dose and number of pills. See what each pharmacy charges using GoodRx. They will vary widely. Boy, did I get a shock. It took me all of two minutes to call a new pharmacy and ask them to have the prescription transferred. Then I printed out the GoodRx coupon showing the pharmacy name, the drug and dose, the price and so on. I took that to the pharmacy and voila! Eighty dollars saved. Here are a few other ideas if GoodRx isn’t going to work for you: -- Ask your doctor if a generic would be just as good, or if another drug would work just as well. -- Find out if you qualify for the Extra Help program to pay for your drugs by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213, or read the information at www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10508.pdf. -- See if you qualify for the Pharmaceutical Assistance Program. (www. medicare.gov/plan-compare/#/pharmaceutical-assistance-program) -- Get a different Medicare drug plan more in line with the drugs you take (www.medicare.gov/plan-compare). One note: You can’t use GoodRx along with a deductible from Medicare or Medicaid, but you can use it instead of those. Beware whether you’ll reach your annual deductible if you don’t use a Medicare drug plan or if you’re in the doughnut hole (cover gap) already. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Day Trips and Multi-Day Trips! Book Now!

Emerging trends in crafting – Natural elements: Crafters are taking their cues from nature, and you’re certain to find natural elements, such as wood, bark and burlap, in craft projects. Distressed finishes on furniture and photo frames will still demand attention. Do-it-yourself projects, such as turning a slab of a tree trunk into a table or upcycling wooden shipping palettes into shelving, also will grow in popularity. Whenever working on designs that feature natural materials, try to repurpose elements whenever possible for the most rustic, authentic feel.

Creative arts meld with socialization for a unique evening out:

NOW HERE’S A TIP

A night out on the town means different things to many people. Taking in a movie or dining at a favorite restaurant make great nights out for many people. But men and women looking to stray from the norm are increasingly combining seemingly unrelated activities for a night out that is both social and creatively rewarding. “Paint-and-sip” or “paint-and-snack” businesses have grown increasingly popular in recent years. The premise is quite simple. Patrons reserve a spot (and canvas) and work their way through a painting, all the while conversing with friends and enjoying a spirited beverage or two along the way. Painting events have helped many men and women tap into their inner artist and make a few new friends along the way. The goal of such events is to have fun and teach adults about painting, and many men and women find the relaxed atmosphere encourages them to express their individuality and artistry. Paint-and-sip events come in various styles. One of the more popular scenarios has people working at an established painting studio, which provides the necessary artistic equipment while guests provide their own drinks and appetizers. Some bars and restaurants also host social painting evenings. Easels and canvasses may be brought into a venue, where participants can paint as they relax with a drink. Food and beverage specials may be part of the package price, or guests may buy items a la carte. Painting events can be organized for private parties, and such parties may take place at private residences or at restaurants or bars. Painting parties have begun to replace more traditional party themes. Some find such parties an entertaining alternative to traditional bachelor or bachelorette parties, while others host birthday parties or baby showers with painting themes. Painting parties also can be a fun way to get friends together for a girls’ or guys’ night out. In addition to a fun night out, participants get to take home their own work of art, which can be gifted or displayed for years to come. To find a painting party by you, simply inquire about companies such as Paint Nite, Paint Along or Pinot’s Palette. Prospective Picassos also can inquire with local restaurant or bars if they will be hosting upcoming painting events or even encourage such establishments to do so if no they do not have any events on their schedules.

By JoAnn Derson * Keep your crisper drawer clean by lining with fresh newspaper. It will absorb smells and liquid, and can be easily replaced. * If it’s garage sale time, try this trick: Wrap a picture frame tightly with tulle. Then you can hang earrings from the tulle. Maybe someone will think it’s so cute that you’ll sell the frame, too! * When your cut-up fruit is about to expire and you don’t think you’ll be able to eat it in time, just freeze it for smoothies. Lay it out in a single layer and pop it in the freezer. When it’s frozen, you can put it in a zipper-top baggie for easy storage. * “Do you have a lot of coffee mugs? Maybe it’s time to show them off! My granny has so many coffee mugs from trips and that she got as gifts. My daddy put up five long shelves on one wall of her kitchen. They are the perfect place to line up and display all the mugs, and each one has a story, which is fun to hear.” -- F.E. in North Carolina

Thank you! Recently, Berkeley Brean (Channel 10 Investigative Reporter) drew attention to the lack of Monroe County medical transport for people who need to be moved by stretcher from home to medical appointments. Thanks to Berkeley’s news segment and Rochester Medical Transport’s efforts on our behalf, we were able to get my husband from our home in Henrietta to an essential appointment at the Spine Center on Ridgeway Avenue. Please know that this retired military man and his family thank you from the bottom of their hearts! - Jim R., his wife Sandy, & daughter Tonya Returned Wallet Thank you so much to the person who returned my wallet to ESL in Brockport. You have renewed my faith in humanity. Elementary School Art Show Our granddaughter invited us to attend the Avon Elementary School Art Show on Wednesday, June 15th. What a show! The students, from all grades, exhibited their fantastic works of art produced under the guidance of their art teacher, Nicole Rowley. While viewing the art, the Avon High School Senior Jazz Band, directed by Charlotte Collins, played jazz tunes for all to enjoy. What an awesome, talented group of musicians! We totally enjoyed our entire time there and would especially like to thank Mr. Rob Lupisella (retiring Elementary School Principal - we will miss him!) for making the event possible. Thank you, also, to all the school staff and students for an amazing experience.

A Response I hope I am not the only one disturbed by a rant titled “Stupid Idea.” This is an irresponsible and reckless [rant]…and is truly hate speech. Wishing ill upon others, whether or not they agree with your beliefs, is morally wrong. Additionally, the author of this rant has no idea if any of the Texas victims or their families were for or against gun control…again, totally irresponsible. As disturbing as this rant is, I find it unacceptable that it was printed at all. Free speech is one thing; hate speech is completely unacceptable. Please vet these comments more carefully. Thank you. Dear readers - we agree. This one got by us and we apologize for printing the rant as submitted. Thank you. ~ The GVPS Management Team Expiration Dates A word to my fellow shoppers and stores. Lately, it has become common that food on the shelves is not properly rotated anymore. Check the expiration dates more carefully. None of us have money to waste. Stores are having a hard time hiring and training, and unfortunately that leads to this problem that we are all too busy to notice. Face Traffic I live on [local road] in [local town]. We’re across from a school. There are kids around the corner from us who walk home with their backs to traffic. I can’t tell you how many people we see doing that along this busy road! Most are listening to their phones and cannot hear traffic behind them, are texting on their phones, or are walking two or three abreast with one of them walking on the side line with no idea what is coming up behind them. Adults should know better, but they don’t! I am begging parents to talk to their children about walking facing traffic so that they see what is coming at them. This could save their lives!

JOBS FOR STUDENTS PROFICIENT IN MATH Math is an important subject and school and proficiency in arithmetic serves people well when it comes time to leave the classroom and enter the workforce. As demand for workers proficient in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics continues to grow, students can benefit by working as hard as possible when studying such subjects. People with strong math skills who thrive on data and crunching numbers may find a diverse array of jobs available to them when they are ready to enter the workforce, providing an entryway into a lucrative and stable career.

In today’s competitive job market, individuals need to channel all possible assets to get ahead. Working more efficiently and improving productivity can be an advantage to anyone.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives.
