HOW TO KEEP OUTDOOR LIVING AREAS SAFE

Use an appropriate extension cord. String lights above outdoor living spaces like decks and patios can create a warm, relaxing nighttime vibe. Those lights need to be pluggedin, whichincreasestheriskforelectricalaccidents.Whenutilizinganextension cord outdoors, never use a cord designated for indoor use. Why would my garden always look so far behind my neighbors’ gardens? What might I be doing differently/ wrong?

It is always encouraged for questions like this for you to consider reaching out to your local County’s Cornell Cooperative Extension as most have agents or Master Gardeners that would be happy to do site visits to help you assess your garden and further your gardening knowledge. Itpotentiallycouldbethesoilandhow yourneighborisamendingit.Itcould

be potentially plant selection. Or it could be planting timing or planting skills. There are so many variables that could affect your garden versus your neighbors.’ One thing that is pretty universal is that gardeners on average are pretty open to talking about gardening, especially their successes. There are vast amounts of research and studies regarding how gardening particularly community gardens build social communities. So, take a deep breath and ask your neighbor their thoughts. I’m sure they would be happy to share. Also,

if you are looking for educational opportunities to broaden your knowledge, reach out to your local CCE; they may have a program like Seed to Supper that might give you the tools and knowledge to be the best gardener you can be. CCEs are great resources for all kinds of information, so take advantage of them as each county has one.

PS. While gardening on many levels is experiential learning, “Learning by Doing,” you rarely are doing somethingwrong…it’sjustaprocess of learning what may work better for you and your specific garden!

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS

One of the more beloved ways for thrill-seekers to spend a day off is to visit an amusement park. Amusement parks take many shapes. Some may be small, traveling carnivals, while others are large parks that draw visitors from all over the country. Amusement parks typically feature hair-raising rides, games of skill, tasty food, and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone.

Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Password protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone owners password-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, you could make it very easy for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity.

Review your social network privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social network sites. As the use of social networking continues to increase, it’s expected that the use of malware will rise, too. Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of what apps you install, and never “friend” someone you don’t know.

Consider getting extra protection. There are a growing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as well as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, Mobile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity Monitoring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part ofthetool.Soakthetoolovernight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Doctors Won’t Prescribe Hormone Therapy to Woman Over 60

DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recently published column, you stated, “As always, the decision belongs to the patient,” while addressing a concern about the benefits and risks of stopping a statin drug. Oh, really? Then, why is it that, once I turned 60, not a single doctor will prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to stop my debilitating post-menopausal symptoms? After suffering from menopausal symptoms starting at age 42, I was finally prescribed HRT at age 57. What relief I felt, as it was the only remedy to alleviate my hot flashes, weight gain, lack of sleep and vaginal dryness.

Once I hit 60, I was ordered to stop HRT, and no one since will prescribe it for me now. I am 66, suffer from hot flashes daily and have my sleep interrupted at least five times a night with terrible night sweats. I have tried just about every over-the-counter offering with zero effectiveness.

I will gladly trade the greater risk of heart attack and stroke, and the possible shorter life span, for relief from symptoms that affect my daily quality of life. Clearly, the choice is not mine, because if I had a choice, I would ask for continued prescriptions of HRT to give me relief. Why don’t I have that choice as a patient? -- R.M.T.

ANSWER: A patient always has the right to refuse a treatment recommended from a physician. However, the physician has the obligation to consider the risks and benefits of a treatment, and is not obliged to prescribe a treatment that they do not think is appropriate.

If a patient asks me for a treatment that has been shown to be ineffective and has the potential for serious adverse effects, I don’t prescribe it, but will work with the patient to find alternative treatments. For example, some nonhormonal prescription treatments are moderately effective for hot flashes and sleep disturbance, and topical estrogen is very effective for vaginal dryness.

However, the case of HRT for symptoms of menopause is more complicated, because estrogen is the most effective treatment we have for menopausal symptoms, particularly for hot flashes. There are risks to HRT, but the benefits for some women are so great that they are willing to accept some risks.

You mentioned the risk of heart disease and stroke. A landmark study called the Women’s Health Initiative helped to define and quantify those (and other) risks. Its effect has been to dramatically reduce the prescribing of menopausal hormone therapy, but the results should not be interpreted to mean that hormone treatment is always inappropriate, even in women who are in their mid-60s, where risks are higher.

Moreover, a woman’s entire health status should be considered when deciding whether to prescribe hormone treatments. In women with a history of an estrogen-dependent tumor (like many breast cancers), a history of a blood clot or a stroke, or a few other issues, the harm almost certainly outweighs the benefits. Otherwise, a wise clinician looks at the patient’s risk for heart disease, blood clots and similar conditions. Women at a very high risk for heart disease should probably avoid estrogen. Using lower-dose estrogen by patch (rather than pills) is wise for women at moderate risk, such as those who are in their 60s.

Physicians do not want to prescribe medications that will harm their patients, and most have stopped prescribing menopausal hormone therapy entirely for women, to prevent disease. However, it still has a role in treating symptoms. I recommend you seek out an expert in treatment of menopausal treatments and have a frank discussion about your willingness to assume risk in order to have a better quality of life.

Summer health and beauty guidelines

Rinse hair after swimming. Chlorinated water and even saltwater can affect the color and texture of your hair. Those who color their hair may find frequent laps in the pool can change the hue of their hair or prevent color from lasting as long as it once did. Wet hair before going in the pool, and rinse out salt and chemicals afterward. A small application of leave-in conditioner before entering the water can help seal the hair cuticle and keep chemicals from being absorbed.

KIDS AND SLEEP

School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

• Assorted hardware seems to collect in big, random piles in our tiny workshop. Nails, screws and bolts of all sizes are mixed together, tossed on the bench when a project is complete. Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles. EXPENSES

The cost of college tuition is a concern for many college-bound students and their families. The cost of a college education continues to rise, but it’s not just tuition and room and board that students and their families must account for. College students may underestimate cost-of-living expenses when planning their school-year budgets. But such expenses can be substantial, catching even the most well-prepared students off guard. Fortunately, there are several ways for college students to save money on living expenses and still make the most of their time on campus.

The luxury of all summer’s sweet sensation is to be found when one lies at length in the warm, fragrant grass, soaked with sunshine, aware of regions of blossoming clover and of a high heaven filled with the hum of innumerous bees. ~Harriet E. Prescott, The Atlantic Monthly, August 1865

The end of July is synonymous with poolsides, wave pools, and eighty-foot tall slides mounted on steel towers. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or a lazy vacationer, waterparks have something for every taste. Nothing beats being in the water to cool off during the summer.

The waterslide was first seen in New Zealand during a display at their International Exhibition in 1906. Ever since, waterslides have quickly evolved, especially in the 1970s. More than 1,000 water parks already exist with multiple new parks opening each year in the U.S.

Good for Mamma G’s Restaurant

A shout-out to Mamma G’s Restaurant in Henrietta: I ordered food to go for three and they got one order wrong, including forgetting the dessert. When I phoned to see if it could be corrected, they not only obliged cheerfully, but also provided the replacement food completely for free, which included a main course. If only more businesses engaged in these practices! We all make mistakes, but these folks were bent on correcting their error, and doing it pleasantly and promptly. Thanks, Mamma G’s - great management!

Yard Sale Thief

On July 8th we were having a neighborly yard sale in [local town]. Around noon we had a torrential downpour. I had tarped two tables with items that could not get wet. Other items were on another table and the ground which could get wet. We went into the house to get out of the rain. My wife had looked out the window and said a woman who had a black SUV was putting a gas can in her car. Then she said I think she is putting it back on the ground. After the rain stopped we went out to find out that over $150.00 worth of items were stolen. I never expected this at a yard sale. Yes, I should have kept watch over it continuously.

Dogs at music in the park

We are senior citizens and enjoy going to listen to the music in the park. We really don’t know why people insist on bringing their dogs. There are so many of us who go to listen to the music, not watch their dogs. It is very annoying. Please people, leave you mutts home.

Loud popping mufflers

Lately I have been exposed to this new theory that a “popping,” like a shot gun, muffler is cool. It scares me when I’m in my yard. Sounds like a drive-by out here in God’s country. I can only imagine what that back pressure is doing internally to your engine. Backfires are not cool. Why would you want everyone noticing you? I sure hope you don’t make any bad choices, bc you would be easily identified. Motorcycles seem much louder lately also, and there’s a generation that isn’t sure when and how to shift. Again, why draw attention to your ignorance? I guess, don’t worry, mommy will buy you another one if you ruin it. Haha.

DID YOU KNOW? Being overweight or obese is a serious medical condition that can affect people of all ages. Carrying around too many pounds can be especially problematic for children because it may put them on the path to health problems that once generally only affected adults. Such issues include diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. The Mayo Clinic advises that childhood obesity can contribute to poor self-esteem and depression. Fortunately, improving kids’ eating habits, such as ensuring kids eat nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods, and increasing physical activity are two ways to help kids maintain healthy weights. Parents who have concerns about their children’s weight should consult with a pediatrician, who may recommend a body mass index test.

REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS

Farmers’ markets may sell organic produce at a cost comparable or even lower than other retailers. That’s because local farmers don’t have to transport their items as far as retailers whose foods were shipped from far away places.

EARLY TREATMENT KEY TO MANAGING SEASONAL DISEASES IN CATTLE

(NAPSI) — Two of the more common production-impacting health issues cattlemen see in their herds this time of year are foot rot and pinkeye. Left untreated, each can lead to more serious, chronic health problems.

Foot rot, pinkeye and other common cattle ailments are highly dependent on pasture, weather and other conditions. Foot rot is more problematic when cattle are kept in wet, muddy and manure-heavy lots. Caused by the Fusobacterium Necrophorum bacteria, symptoms include swelling and inflammation between the toes, resulting in lameness and reluctance to walk.

Pinkeye is a highly infectious eye condition that can affect cattle of all ages, often on tall-grass pastures and in environmental situations that can irritate the eye. Flies are a major irritant and vector for the disease, so controlling them and other sources of irritant is critical. Delayed treatment of pinkeye can result in loss of the eye, reduced performance and a less marketable animal.

Fortunately, with timely surveillance and treatment, these infections, along with other diseases, can be easily and cost-effectively managed by producers with a non-prescription injectable product such as Noromycin 300 LA, a highly concentrated, lowdose, fast-acting formulation of oxytetracycline. Effectively used by cattlemen for many years, it is widely available through most farm and veterinary supply companies. Learn more at www.norbrook.com.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB

Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

TAKE A COURSE IN DORM SAFETY

College students have a few different living options at their disposal, but many opt for dormitory living, as it is one of the more convenient and popular boarding options, particularly for out-of-town students. Thousands of post-secondary students pack up their belongings and move away from home in the pursuit of an education, and parents want to do what they can to ensure their college-aged kids are safe.

For many students, college represents the first time they will live anywhere other than the homes they grew up in. Dorm life can be an exciting adventure, but it can also be one that may open new college students up to inherently risky situations.

While students should look forward to fun and excitement at school, it’s also important for them to be prepared for what lies ahead at college and in dorm life - and to take the proper safety precautions. Use common sense and trust your instincts with regard to dorm safety. Make college memories good ones by emphasizing caution.

PAW’S CORNER

Adopting a “War Dog”

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I just watched an older movie about a military dog, called “Max.” How can I adopt a dog like that? -- T.T. via email

DEAR T.T.: While “Max” is a compelling movie, adopting a former military working dog takes a fair amount of research on your part, and the ability to care for dogs that have high energy and need plenty of attention and continuing training. All military dog adoptions are handled through the Department of Defense Military Working Dog Adoption Program at Lackland AFB in Texas.

Dogs eligible for adoption were retired due to age, injury or sickness. Not all dogs saw combat. Some worked in national security, while others were trained as working dogs but did not meet the standards for military service.

Be prepared for a long wait a er submitting the application -- up to a year or more. First priority for adoption goes to law-enforcement agencies, if the dog is still t for duty. If not, the dog’s handler can adopt it. Only a er that do dogs become available for adoption to civilians. Some dogs, sadly, are not adoptable due to temperament or severe injuries.

In addition to patience, be aware that you don’t have control over what type of dog is made available; although you can state your preference on the application. Be prepared for some pre-adoption expenses as well: If selected to adopt a MWD, you’ll need to travel to where the dog is being kept (most likely, Lackland) at least twice -- once to be interviewed and meet the dog, and again to pick it up if your application is approved.
