HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees. To learn more about Carhartt’s latest pants and knee pads, visit www.Carhartt.com. To watch the brand’s latest video, “61 Workers, One Mission,” visit the Carhartt channel on YouTube. Call Ron Colon of All Property Maintenance • (585) 802-6934 CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.
ROOFING MATERIALS TRANSFORM THE LOOK AND FUNCTIONALITY OF A HOME Slate: One of the longest-lasting materials available in roofing products, slate is fireproof and comes in various natural colors and shapes. Once installed, slate requires very little maintenance. However, slate can be cost-prohibitive because its delicacy and weight requires extra roofing support and professional installation.

HILL TOP ENTERPRISES (315) 524-7873 HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Wash your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose.
Outstanding reputation & quality workmanship is what we stand by.

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Realizing that surgical antiseptics were marketable to just a small group of professionals, the makers of Listerine began to market the product as a floor cleaner -- as well as a cure for gonorrhea. While we won’t necessarily vouch for the latter, in a pinch, just add a capful for every gallon of water and mop away. Other uses include dandruff elimination, deodorant, a numbing agent for toothache pain and tick removal. * A 1938 issue of “Mademoiselle” magazine had a handy bit of advice for college gals seeking suitors: have your mom send you some flowers to trick all the boys into thinking they have competition. No word on whether it worked. * Ferdinand Demara, aka “The Great Impostor,” posed as a surgeon aboard a Navy destroyer in the Korean War, where he was forced to operate on 16 people. He proceeded to speed-read a textbook on general surgery and was able to successfully perform all the operations without losing a single patient.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
More and More Scams Aimed at Seniors Most scams keep repeating year after year. After all, the scammers are making big money doing those Nigerian grandson/auto-warranty scams, so why would they drop them? However, new ones keep popping up. If you shop online, beware of accidentally typing in the wrong name. Scammers have created websites with actual information from real store websites, but with a slightly different name. If you shop at a fake store and put in your credit card, the scammers will have immediate access to it. If you learned how to do Zoom or other online conferences to talk to your family, beware any emails or messages you get about your Zoom. Scammers have set up thousands of Zoom-related internet links for the sole purpose of getting you to click on one they send you. The instant you do, malware (malicious software) is loaded into your computer. From that point all your personal data is at risk. Ignore those emails or messages. If there’s a problem with your Zoom, go straight to the Zoom site and check it from there. In a sign of the times, there are fake COVID contact tracers that ask for personal information and Social Security numbers. Hang up if they call you. A big problem is that often we don’t report the scams. We’re embarrassed, or we’re afraid the scammers will retaliate, or we just don’t know where to report it. If nothing else, you can call the police. If the scam happened on the Internet, contact the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (www.ic3.gov). The center has logged over 6 million complaint calls -- a big portion from those over age 60. Scammers are everywhere, and it’s up to us to stop them in their tracks by being wary of phone calls, emails and the internet. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Grieving Cats Unite After Losing Brothers DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I wanted to share a tale of two cats. One is “Bean,” a chocolate Burmese. Bean had a brother, “Coco.” I purchased the two of them when they were kittens. Sadly, Coco passed away at age 3 from cancer. Bean grieved for a very long time. A few months ago, I met someone in an online group who also had two Burmese cats, and one of them passed away. The surviving cat, “Storm,” was inconsolable. Like Bean, she roamed her house day and night, meowing for her brother to reappear. Storm’s owner had health issues and was looking to place her in a new home. I had a feeling that together we could help both of these grieving cats. But cats, especially adult cats, often do not get along -- especially when one is introduced into the other’s home. However, both cats were fixed, which helps reduce territorialism and aggression, among other problems. We both agreed to a two-week trial; if the cats were too stressed out or fought, then it was a no-go. Fortunately, after a cautious sniffing-out period during their introduction, Bean and Storm snuggled right up together. They have been buddies ever since. Neither of them goes meowing around at night. Bean and Storm are a new family, and they couldn’t be happier. Thought I would share! -- Dana A., via email

DEAR DANA: Thank you for a heartwarming story! You did the right thing by setting up a trial period, because cats that don’t like each other may escalate aggression with each encounter, and the trauma is bad for both. But it sounds like Bean and Storm have settled in nicely. Congratulations! Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Statistics from U.S. Youth Soccer indicate that millions of children across the country are taking to the sport that was once primarily associated with Europe and other parts of the world beyond the United States. According to U.S. Youth Soccer, more than three million youth players were registered to play soccer in 2014. That marks an amazing increase from just 40 years earlier, when barely more than 100,000 youths registered to play soccer. While the reasons behind the growing popularity of soccer within the United States are not officially known, one might reasonably trace American youths’ embrace of the sport to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s appearance in the 1990 World Cup. Though the team was defeated in each of its three matches in the 1990 World Cup, the appearance marked the United States’ first since 1950. In fact, participation in youth soccer in the United States in 2014 marked an 89 percent increase since 1990. In addition, the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup, likely generating even more interest in soccer, which many American youths now consider their favorite sport.

HOMETOWN PHOTOS Hamlin Town Hall I went to town hall to pay for my dog’s license. It was a pleasure to speak to Patty Jo at the office. She accommodated me even though I didn’t bring any of my paper work with me. Sad to say that sometimes people are very disconnected and don’t even smile or say hello when on the job. But this was not the case with Patty Jo. She not only did her job but was very personable. You can’t beat that! Thanks! Hope to see you next year!

Our thanks I would like to recognize Alexander CSD teachers, essential staffing and all employees expressing the amazing job done during a challenging and uncertain school year resulting from COVID. Without your dedication and flexibility, our children would have suffered. Your efforts do not go unrecognized by the community. Thank you for all you do for the children! E. W.
Beautiful flowers The flowers in Vitale Park are glorious. Many thanks to the people who give the plants TLC!
Donut shortage The [local store] in [local town] on [local street] doesn’t make enough of the good donuts in the morning. If you get there by 7am, all of the good donut choices are gone, and the bad donuts linger all day long. How hard is it to just make more of the good donuts? Everyone wins. To the donut manager, just know we all see you.
Rude, impatient driver I got stuck in the middle of an intersection. Traffic was moving when I entered, but it abruptly stopped. When the light changed, I was stuck under the light. When you got your green light, did you have to blast your horn? I had nowhere to go until the car in front of me moved. You were an elderly lady who then turned into the grocery store. I could see why 4 seconds was too long for you to wait. Impatient and rude! Seniors apartment costs Hi. I live in a seniors apartment complex in [local town]. We recently got a notice that they will be raising our rent about 30 or 35 dollars this September and then 3% for the years after. They forget that we are senior citizens on a fixed income. This wouldn't be so bad, but they have not done improvements. A couple of the buildings have no fire alarms; in some of the buildings, the security does not work. Some have not had phone service for a few weeks. Inside, our apartments have had the same carpets and kitchen floors and have not had a fresh coat of paint in years, but the rent still keeps going up. I think someone should look into this place.
Bias So tired of people always complaining about the less fortunate on unemployment, but not once do you hear about all these greedy companies that received benefits and PPP money that never trickled down! Too many tailgaters There are far too many tailgaters! Tailgating is illegal, dangerous, and very rude! Please stay 3 seconds behind the vehicle driving in front of you. RECOVERING FROM STROKE (NAPSI)—Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability—in fact, it’s even more disabling than it is fatal. The period following a stroke can be difficult for patients and their loved ones, as they grapple with the uncertainties of recovery. For example, Sabrina Warren-White was a busy professional when a stroke in left her unable to speak or use her right side. She quickly began a rigorous rehabilitation program and can now speak, walk and use her right arm. Doctor’s Advice Once acute medical issues are resolved, focusing on rehabilitation is paramount to helping people build their strength, capabilities and confidence, said Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, the Ruth L. Works Professor and Chairman for the Department of Neurology and Co-director for the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute and KY Clinic at the University of Kentucky. “Most patients will recover to some degree, but a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation is crucial because it has been shown to result in better outcomes for patients,” Dr. Goldstein added. Access to coordinated and intense therapies after a stroke is important because the greatest amount of recovery tends to occur in the first 30 days, Dr. Goldstein said. “Intensity of rehabilitation therapy matters,” he pointed out. “Patients need access to good rehabilitation services and should continue to work at it, even after that initial recovery period.” Where To Turn To help, the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally sponsored by Kindred Rehabilitation Services, raises awareness that stroke is largely beatable through high-quality rehabilitation, patient support, and implementation of Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Guidelines. Patients and caregivers can access more information about recovery and how to make informed decisions at www.StrokeAssociation.org/recovery. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

“throw out sugar-laden cereals” and eat a healthy breakfast, such as oatmeal. Now we are told that oatmeal contains a significant amount of glyphosate, which they say is an ingredient in Roundup! Are we poisoning our children? -- A.D. ANSWER: There have been traces of glyphosate (an herbicide) found in oatmeal and other cereals. However, as always, the dose makes the poison. The Environmental Protection Agency has set a level of 30 parts per million, below which the exposure is considered safe. A 2018 study by the Environmental Working Group found levels of glyphosate in oatmeal breakfast cereals to be between 0.5 and 1 parts per million. It is unlikely that consumption of these cereals causes any significant health risks. Nobody likes the idea of eating an herbicide, but these are very low amounts, and some experts have questioned the specificity of the detection method used. The same EWG report found that organic cereals had less, but often still some, glyphosate in them. Although the levels in both conventional and organic cereals were safe, glyphosate itself is found at generally lower levels in organic products. Unfortunately, there have not been good studies on residual amounts of organic pesticides (some of which are substantially more toxic than glyphosate) that might be found in organically grown food. I agree with reducing the simple sugars found in many cereals, especially those marketed to children. However, I recommend more protein for breakfast than is found in oatmeal. You can add more with nuts, egg whites or seeds. ***

Rochester Veteran Recalls Playing the Field, Meeting Legends & Finding True Love BY LOUIS J. MALUCCI, LT. COL. USAF, RETIRED The next day, I flew home to be with my family for a week or so before reporting to my next school assignment. While I was home, I took my parents to a Red Wing game. They had never been to a game before.
I
n 1957 I was a second Lieutenant in the Air Force navigation training class at Ellington Air Force Base (AFB), Houston, Texas. It was a yearlong course, studying everything from map reading to LORAN, RADAR, celestial navigation and even meteorology. That December, the Air Force graciously gave us about 7 or 10 days off for the Christmas holiday. However, we were to be back in class at 7:30 January 2. January 2nd. How was anyone from New York or Ohio supposed to enjoy New Year’s Eve and be back in Texas on January 2nd? Jim, my closest friend and later best man at my wedding, already had a plan. I was to ride in his car with him to his home in Nelsonville, Ohio, and then to Columbus to take the train home to Rochester, NY. Jim suggested that I return to his house a day early and he would have his girlfriend select a blind date for me. Jim’s girlfriend picked a fellow nursing student. She was very pretty and soft-spoken, and we had a delightful candlelight dinner at Jim’s girlfriend’s apartment. The rest of the New Year’s Eve was spent making the rounds to Jim’s numerous brothers and sisters and having a few drinks. Afterwards, my date continued to write to me and even sent her graduation photo to me after my wedding 9 months later.
Sometime afterwards, Jim informed me that a park in his hometown of Nelsonville was being renamed “Estel Crabtree Park.” Estel had been a well-known major-league baseball player. I blurted out, “Estel Crabtree!” Jim asked how I knew him. I said (long before the arrival of Cal Ripken playing for the Rochester Red Wings), he was the most famous baseball player in Rochester Red Wing history. He played for several years before being promoted to the St. Louis Cardinals where he played for many years. While a Red Wing, he hit the game winning home run in the Junior World Series where Rochester of the International League beat the Denver Bears of the American Association. He later returned to Rochester after his major league career ended and was the team manager for several years. Jim then stunned me by saying that Estel’s daughter, Diane, was originally to be my New Year’s Eve date, but she was ill, and the girl I spent the evening with was a last-minute substitute. I jumped up in the air screaming, “You mean I could have dated Estel Crabtree’s daughter?!” Several months later in July, I graduated with my silver wings, a girl I had been seeing in Houston pinning my wings on my breast.

By chance, the game we picked was designated “Old Timers” day. In attendance were former big-league stars who made Rochester one stop on their way to fame. Specs Toporcer, Johnny Mize (now in Cooperstown in the Baseball Hall of Fame), Pepper Martin, and so on, including Estel Crabtree! Sitting in section 105, row 10, were Estel’s wife and daughter, Diane, right in front of us! I excused myself and walked down to the row behind where Crabtree’s family was and said, “Diane?” She said, “Yes?” To which I replied, “I am the guy you stood up on New Year’s Eve.” She replied, “Oh, you must be Lou.” Wow. I always knew that fame and humility were crosses hard to carry, but “You must be Lou” seven months later? At this point, her mother interjected, “It’s not too late. We are going to be in town for a few days, so you can still take her out.” Was this a dream? Her mother said not to bring her back to the hotel but rather to this address in the city. Unknown to me, it was the home of the sports editor of the daily newspaper. I took her to dinner at the 277 Club then swimming at Canandaigua Lake, the Gem of the Finger Lakes. We then proceeded to the address her mother provided. Immediately, someone opened the screen door and stuck a scotch and soda into my hand. Here I was, a mere 24-year-old, in the midst of major league baseball stars. Each one shook my hand, asked me about myself, and had stories to tell. Thus ended a magical night in the life of a young baseball fan. I never heard from Diane again. I was married several months later to my former college fiancé, and almost everyone lived happily ever after. Epilogue: You may be asking how my marriage happened only months later after all these lady friends? My wife and I had been engaged, but upon my graduation, a year before hers, she broke the engagement. Two years later after getting an Easter card from her via my mother, I stopped in Pales Verdes Estate, near Los Angles where she was teaching music, to visit her enroute to Sacramento. Just two months later, she and I were in the back seat of the same car that Jim and I drove to Nelsonville, going from the wedding altar in McClellan AFB to our reception at Mather AFB. Even businesses that are facing sudden and forced transitions to remote workerplaces can utilize instant messaging apps like Slack to facilitate immediate communication between employees. This can drive greater efficiency and promote the sense of community among staff that many companies are proud to have fostered.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you’ve lost a zipper pull, you can create a temporary one with a paperclip. * Remove all of the air from a plastic storage bag with a drinking straw. Slip the straw into the bag and close as much as possible. Then suck any air out through the straw, and quickly pull out and close in a single motion. Your leftovers will stay fresh longer, and foods may stack better in the freezer.

* And speaking of straws, did you know you can use them to curl your hair? Wind sections of damp hair around a plastic straw and secure the ends with a bobby pin. Dry in the sun or use a hair dryer on low heat. Remove and spritz with hair spray. * Here’s an oldie but a goodie! Iced coffee is at its best when brewed with twice the usual amount of ground coffee, because the coffee is diluted by the melting ice cubes. Or use regular-strength brewed ice coffee and serve over coffee ice cubes. They’re easy to prepare: Pour cool brewed coffee into icecube trays and freeze. * Lemon juice can bring out the flavor of mushrooms. I keep a little spray bottle to keep lemon juice accessible in the kitchen. I find it’s good for all kinds of things, like avocadoes and apples. I spray the cut side to keep them from browning. WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
