Use Register Pesticides
Labeled for your intended site/ pest combination and follow all use instructions and safety precautions on the label.
“Always read and follow the label when applying pesticide. The label is the law.” While people who promote making home remedies with familiar household ingredients to control pests are well
intentioned, common claims about home remedies are inaccurate. What about claims that home remedies are safer than store-bought pesticides? Though it might surprise you, home remedies can actually pose MORE risk to you, other
people, and the environment. Kenneth Glenn Estes, Jr | Agriculture Program Manager, Cornell Cooperative Extension | Livingston County

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of MassachusettsAmherstnotesthatleafspotdiseasesaffectbothcool-and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungi is causing the problem. For example, bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungi that causes leaf spot, and it also produces dark purple to black spots. However, it tends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such situations, professional landscapers can be invaluable resources as well.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Patient With Osteoarthritis Develops Hives After Taking Ibuprofen
DEAR DR. ROACH: I took ibuprofen for my osteoarthritis, but developed hives. Does this mean I’m allergic to all NSAIDs? What other therapeutic options do I have? -- J.B.
ANSWER: Anti-inflammatory drugs can have many allergic and allergic-type reactions, and ibuprofen is probably the most likely of all to do so. For people with mild reactions (such as hives that go away) without swelling or shortness of breath, I recommend avoiding ibuprofen and similar medicines, such as naproxen (Aleve and Naprosyn, among others), as well as any other medication ending in “-profen,” such as ketoprofen or flurbiprofen.
Aspirin is safe for most people as far as allergies go, although it is a little more likely to cause side effects at higher doses. The prescription medicines meloxicam (Mobic), nabumetone (Relafen) and celecoxib (Celebrex) are among the least likely to have any cross reaction with ibuprofen. Anti-inflammatory gels like diclofenac cream (Voltaren) should also be safe for topical use.
People with more serious reactions need a referral to an allergist, who may consider desensitization.
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: We had to get a router attached to our computer to get Wi-Fi for our house. Is there any health risk by sitting or sleeping near the router from the radio waves it puts out? -- B.R.
ANSWER: The energy output from a typical Wi-Fi router is about 10 watts, and the energy is the lowfrequency, non-ionizing type. Very powerful radio sources, such as AM radio towers, can actually cause injury by heating tissues, but these have a power output in the thousands, or even tens of thousands, of watts. GLUTEN-FREE IS MORE THAN A TREND
When someone with celiac disease eats gluten the body mounts an immune system response that attacks the villi, which are small fingerlike projections that line the small intestine. The villi, when damaged, cannot properly absorb nutrients from food. Untreated celiac disease also may lead to the development of other autoimmune disorders like type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis.
The intestinal damage from eating gluten often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating, and anemia, and can lead to serious complications. Following a strict gluten-free diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing.
More companies are producing glutenfree foods and stores are carrying them in greater numbers. In addition, there are a number of new baking flours available that provide alternatives to traditional wheat-based formulas. People with celiac disease or gluten intolerances can use these specially designed flours to make homemade items. Certain flours also may be billed as one-to-one alternatives, meaning they can be substituted for traditional flour in recipes without adjusting the measurements.

Keeping newborn babies safe is a priority for mothers, fathers and other caregivers. Various ailments can afflict newborns, and one many new parents may be unfamiliar with is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. According to Hackensack Meridian Health, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV produces symptoms similar to the common cold or the flu and can include runny nose, cough and trouble breathing. In severe cases, particularly in infants, a baby may need to be hospitalized if his or her breathing is greatly compromised. Examples of severe infections include bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia. RSV also can affect adults, but healthy adults are usually only affected by mild symptoms, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In such instances, recovery can take between one and two weeks. Researchers are looking into immunizing pregnant women against RSV as a way to help protect babies from the virus.

Pirate Toy Fund Celebrates 500,000th Toy with Pirate Hat Night at Innovative Field
BY REBECCA L E CLAIR
Six-year-old Mariana Lippincott-Diaz from Gates received the 500,000th toy handed out by the Pirate Toy Fund since its founding in 1995. is special presentation took place at the pitcher’s mound of Innovative Field before the Red Wings baseball game on Saturday, the 12th. Mariana was selected for this honor because of her generosity and kind-heartedness in memory of a friend who died of childhood cancer.
“We knew the Pirate Toy Fund was just about to hand out its 500,000th toy,” said Otto Harnischfeger, PTF Executive Director. “We invited Mariana and her family to the baseball game so we could recognize her for raising $800 to buy toys for children receiving medical treatment at Golisano Children’s Hospital.”
Last fall, Mariana was hospitalized for salmonella poisoning and spent several days in the hospital. Like every child admitted to Golisano Children’s Hospital, Mariana received a toy from the Pirate Toy Fund. She also was aware of her friend, Ian Mech, who received toys while being treated for childhood cancer. A er Ian died, Mariana dedicated the proceeds from her lemonade stand to buy more toys in his memory. To date, she has raised more than $800.
“How great is that? To have a little girl so focused on giving back to her community and remembering her family friend,” exclaimed Harnischfeger, “So we decided to combine celebrating Mariana’s generosity and the Pirate Toy Fund’s historic benchmark with a community party, all on Pirate Hat Night!”
Gary the Happy Pirate, the children’s entertainer who conceived the idea of the Pirate Toy Fund while performing at Golisano Children’s Hospital in the 1990s, was acknowledged during the pre-game ceremony. His wife Kathryn Smith, who wrote lyrics to most of the songs Gary performed during his career,
was honored as well. Kathryn has been Gary’s primary caretaker since he was diagnosed with a fatal neurological disease in 2020. “Because of the pandemic, we were never able to have a community celebration when Gary retired from being our previous Executive Director,” said PJ Tagliente, Vice President of the PTF Board. “I think everyone would agree this is a perfect time to honor Gary as we give out the 500,000th toy.”
To thank the community for its unwavering support, the Pirate Toy Fund hosted a free party in front of the baseball stadium from 5:00-6:45pm. Families came to enjoy bounce houses, pony rides, face painting, and balloon sculpting. e rst 1,000 kids through the gates received a free pirate hat.
e mission of the Rochester-based Pirate Toy Fund started with providing toys to children at Golisano Children’s Hospital. As the organization grew, the mission expanded to provide toys to every hospital in the Rochester region plus agencies that help children in need. e Pirate Toy Fund asks community members to donate toys and volunteers help distribute them. Over the past 28 years, the charity has collected half a million toys and delivered them to more than 100 agencies and health care facilities.
“We are so proud to be celebrating this milestone during the summer because it gives us a great opportunity to remind folks that we need toys year-round. We hope folks come to the ballpark for some pre-game fun and then enjoy a great game. Everything we do is for the kids,” said Harnischfeger. ANSWERS TO COMMON PET FOSTERING QUESTIONS
What are some benefits to fostering for the people involved? While there are many benefits to the pet, including a less stressful, quiet environment, people get something out of fostering, too. Foster families can provide love and affection to an animal that needs it. It can be rewarding to do something selfless, and teaches compassion to everyone in the household.Since having a pet is a large responsibility, pet fostering also serves as an introductory lesson for anyone considering becoming a permanent pet parent. When fostering a pet, everyone in the household gets to see the day-to-day tasks that pet ownership requires.

Keeping your pets cool during the summer is essential for their well-being. Here are some ideas to help you keep your pets cool:
Here’s a tip
for Grandparents
* Our friends who live in an apartment have a great storable sandbox solution. ey use a plastic under-the-bed storage bin lled with sand and toys. It has a lid and can be stored easily on their balcony. e kids still get to play in the sand even on rainy days. -- W. in Kentucky
* I saw this idea in a magazine somewhere, and now I make them for other moms and dads, as they are cute and functional: Make a cell number beaded bracelet kids can wear when you go out. Little kids may not remember Mommy’s cellphone number, but they can bring the bracelet to a store employee and ask him or her to call the number on the bracelet. Use elastic thread and colorful number beads. -- P.S. in Oregon
* If you use a 1/4-inch hole punch, which you can get at a hardware store for cheap, you easily can make a straw hole in the plastic tops of kids’ single serving drinks, like milk and water bottles. Less chance of a spill. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale.
When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

KNIGHT in SHINING ARMOR
Very SPECIAL THANKS to the wonderful man who helped me after I tripped and fell on the uneven sidewalk outside the Canandaigua Post Office on Friday 7/21. Even though I was lucky enough to not be seriously injured, I’m not so sure I could have stood back up on my own. You were so kind to help me up, walk me into the post office and back out to my car, just to be sure I was okay. I wish I had a way to thank you personally, but will have to just hope you read this message thanking you for your kindness.
Missed Appointments
If you miss your appointment without canceling you get charged. Why then, if you have an appointment and you’re sitting there past the time, sometimes one hour plus, shouldn’t they be charged?
PLZ Return my JOSH!
Gosh darn it! My lawn sign of vaulting Josh Allen was kidnapped last week. A gift from family, he began jumping over my row of multi-colored solar lights during the ‘22-23 Christmas/Football Season. Similar figures exist to buy for yourself, if a fan. And if you’re the opposite, there are multiple methods to promote your own team without resorting to petit larceny. Please return Josh ASAP. The neighborhood misses him. We’d appreciate it, too, if you’d stop discarding your personal trash out your vehicle windows onto our properties. That glass bottle shattered all over my driveway & lawn, plus the road shoulder. It endangered neighborhood pets & children, plus passing sneaker soles & bicycle tires. We’ve got many more important activities to better occupy our time than collecting your daily assortment of cigarette butts & empty packs, fast food garbage, bottles & cans, etc.…
(Come Home, Josh! No ransom demands were issued.)

HOW TO CREATE STRUCTURE AFTER RETIREMENT
Find something to truly engage in. Professionals who truly enjoy their work tend to be fully engaged, so it’s no surprise if such individuals have a hard time adjusting to retirement. Some may suggest volunteering can help fill the void created by retirement, but researchers with the Sloan Center on Aging and Work at Boston College have found that only those individuals who are truly engaged in their post-retirement volunteering enjoy the psychological benefits of such pursuits. So before retirees dive right in to volunteering as a means to creating structure, they should first exercise due diligence and find an opportunity they’ll find genuinely engaging.

HOW TO HOST A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS DINNER
Throughout the history of commerce, many a deal has been made at the dinner table. Business dinners are a great opportunity to lay a foundation for long, potentially lucrative professional relationships.
Etiquette is important when hosting business dinners, as a breach of decorum can derail a relationship before it even begins. Professionals tasked with hosting business dinners can take the following tips to heart before sitting down to break bread with their colleagues.
Choose a restaurant that can cater to various diets. Hosting a business dinner can be similar to hosting family during the holiday season, when hosts must cater to guests with various food allergies and dietary restrictions. Asking for such information in advance of a business dinner may seem intrusive to guests, so try to find a restaurant that offers a flexible menu capable of accommodating vegetarians, vegans and guests who might be gluten-free. Avoid restaurants that specialize in styles of cuisine that might be unhealthy or so extraordinary that guests might be hesitant to order anything from the menu.
Confirm the reservation. Make the reservation well in advance of the date of the dinner, and don’t forget to confirm the reservation a week beforehand. Confirming a week beforehand gives hosts time to book another reservation should theirs have been canceled by mistake.
Arrive at the restaurant before your guests. Hosts should arrive at the restaurant before their guests so they can address any potential issues in advance of the beginning of the dinner. Arriving early gives hosts time to ensure the table set aside for their party is not in a heavily trafficked area of the restaurant, such as adjacent to the kitchen or restroom. Hosts who arrive later than their guests may also give guests the mistaken impression that they are unimportant.
Let guests order first. Once everyone has sat down at the table, hosts should allow guests to order first. Doing so saves guests who don’t want to eat that much the potential discomfort of sitting there while their hosts eat an appetizer and/or large entrée. If guests choose to abstain from alcohol, follow suit. If guests want to have a drink, hosts can limit their consumption to a single beverage.
Don’t eat too quickly or too slowly. Hosts should try to keep pace with their guests in regard to how quickly or slowly they eat. Guests might feel uncomfortable if they finish first or feel pressured to eat quickly if their hosts finish first.
Pay in advance. Business dinner guests do not expect to pay for their meals. While it’s widely accepted that hosts will pay, it can feel awkward to have the bill brought to the table. Upon arriving early, hosts can give their credit cards to the wait staff and ask that they be charged without having the bill brought to the table. If necessary, step away from the table during the meal to sign the bill and address any discrepancies.
Business dinners have sparked many successful professional relationships, oftentimes thanks to hosts who took the time to ensure the dinners went off without a hitch.
