Be a lost pet ally
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My brother and I saw a dog that matched the photo of a lost dog on flyers around the neighborhood. We tried calling him, but he ran off. So we told our mom what happened, and she called the number on the flyer. I don’t know if the owners found the dog. We’re wondering if we did the right thing. Why did the dog run away? -- Brian and Sarah in Cincinnati
DEAR BRIAN AND SARAH: You did the right thing by telling your mom so that she could call the owners and tell them where you spotted the lost dog. Don’t feel bad about the dog running away: Lost dogs are o en shy of strangers. Some will not even come when their owners call. But, by telling them the location, the owners have a much better chance of recovering their dog. Here’s how you can support owners who are searching for a lost pet:
-- Take a photo of a lost pet flyer with your smartphone. You can instantly refer back to it if you see a pet matching the description.
-- Don’t call or chase a dog or cat if you spot it. Contact the owner as soon as possible and give them the location where you spotted the pet.
-- If the pet approaches you calmly, try to keep them in place by petting or giving them treats, until you can put a leash on them and bring them to a safe containment area. Contact the owner or local shelter.
-- If the pet appears to be ill or injured, carefully approach and wrap them in an old blanket before attempting to pick them up.
-- If the pet is being aggressive, contact animal control.

Lemons have been around forever but were first introduced to the New World in 1493 by Christopher Columbus. Since then, lemons became a staple in households, for medicinal uses, and were also seen at one point as a sign of wealth. There is more to a lemon than just the flavor and its acidic properties. Lemon juice is used in herbal remedies, it is a quick fix for many ailments, and is even used for preparing at-home beauty treatments.

Wonderful family stopped to help
Since when is it legal to drive an electric scooter down [street]? No, not just on the sidewalk but in front of moving vehicles. Then, with no helmet either. He was following a lady on a Vespa style scooter, both roughly doing 10 to 15 mph in a 30 zone. Oblivious to others, they just didn’t care. And then they went around the intersection using crosswalks, then back into the road. Where are the police? If any injury happens it should be NO fault to the drivers, regardless of the cause.

We cannot thank the family in the black SUV (Lincoln maybe) that helped push our car to the side of the road when it died in traffic on RT332 near Carmens Way. At 77 years old I started to push it and all the members of this family got out from their SUV and pushed us to the side to safety. The OC Sheriff came along and kept us all safe. Monday the 12th of August reset my thoughts of who would help others today. We had only moved here (Farmington) for a year and a half, and now we know that among the fleeting moments of our lives there are the people who would "jump to help.” I didn't get names, but I wanted to post this so that perhaps they will see this and know how thankful we are. God Bless you wonderful good Samaritan family.
If you’re selling an item that’s defective or with no apparent damage, have the decency or class to point it out before you have your hand out for the cash. I bought an item, not cheap either, and I later found that it had cracks inside that leaked. You had to know. You even said you’re selling it because you’re moving. Your neighbors said differently. I tried contacting you hoping you’d do the right thing or at least tell me if there’s anything else I should know before I order the replacement part. Nope, you’re not man or woman enough to do so. Sure, it’s on me for buying at a yard sale, but either way, I’ll see you at your next sale.

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE
Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs.
The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 15,000 people were treated for fireworks injuries in emergency rooms in 2020. In addition, injuries and deaths from fireworks increased by 50 percent between 2019 and 2020. Forty-four percent of those injuries were burns, 30 percent involved the hands and fingers and 22 percent affected the head, face and ears. USCPSC data also indicated that 15 percent of injuries affected the eyes. The majority of injuries (66 percent) occurred around the July 4th holiday, but it’s important that individuals exercise caution whenever they celebrate with fireworks. And those precautionary measures should remain in place when using sparklers, which the USCPSC indicates caused 900 injuries in 2020.

Accutane Isn’t To Blame for Affecting Woman’s Fertility
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter is in her 30s and has been experiencing infertility for several years. She and her husband have been tested, and the issue is her egg quality. She’s had several rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF) with no success. At age 19, she was prescribed Accutane for her acne. She had to take a monthly pregnancy test in order to take this medication. I researched this medication at the time and was aware of the depression side effects. I was also aware that if a pregnancy occurred while taking this drug, it would have to be terminated. The situation was not a concern at the time. Now, years later, her fertility doctor says that she has eggs, but they are of poor quality. What is your opinion on this medication affecting fertility? I read that Accutane was banned in 2009. -- C.M.
ANSWER: Isotretoin (Accutane) is the most effective treatment for acne, but it has the potential for serious side effects and can only be given after a thorough review of its risks.
I have to correct two misapprehensions: Although brandname Accutane was discontinued in 2009, generic isotretoin was not banned and still remains an extremely beneficial treatment that is safe when used appropriately. Secondly, there is no obligation while on this medicine to commit to a pregnancy termination.
Great care needs to be taken to prevent pregnancy, with repeatedly negative pregnancy tests before starting therapy, as well as two forms of birth control in any person who could get pregnant (unless they are abstinent). There is a high likelihood that a baby who is exposed to isotretoin will experience severe damage or be stillborn. If a pregnancy occurs while on isotretoin, the drug must immediately be stopped, and the person needs to be referred to an expert in reproductive toxicity. A pregnancy termination should be discussed, but the decision is always up to the patient (except where prohibited by law).
Although isotretoin can cause severe damage to the developing fetus if taken during pregnancy, a study showed that any effect on fertility was gone 18 months after treatment. There are many reasons why a woman can have difficulty getting pregnant, due to eggs that are less likely to get fertilized. Age is a major factor, but many genetic conditions, chemotherapy, radiation, viruses (including COVID-19), and autoimmune diseases are known causes.
I wish your daughter the best of luck. I have had several patients give up after several rounds of IVF, only to conceive a healthy baby naturally.

UNIQUE WAYS TO REDUCE CANCER RISK EVERY DAY
Drinkmorefluids. Drinking more fluids is one of the easier things people can do every day to reduce their cancer risk. The American Cancer Society recommends individuals consume eight cups of water per day, but millions likely fall far short of that amount. That’s unfortunate, as research presented at the American Association for Cancer Research International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research in 2011 found that high fluid intake was associated with a 24 percent reduced bladder cancer risk among men. In addition, a separate study funded by the Strauss Institute and published in 2020 in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that women with breast cancer consumed less water and total fluids than women who did not have breast cancer. The researchers concluded more investigation into the link between drinking more water and reducing breast cancer risk is necessary, but noted that drinking water is harmless, convenient and beneficial to many aspects of health.
Emily Bradford: A Passionate Advocate for Nature and Community

Emily Bradford’s journey to becoming Assistant Director at Tinker Nature Park is one defined by curiosity, passion, and an unyielding dedication to nature. Her role at Tinker is multifaceted, assisting with planning and maintenance, supervising volunteers, and overseeing the park’s bee yard. Emily also coordinates the park’s public relations and major projects, such as the digitization of the Tinker Homestead & Farm Museum Inventory and grant writing efforts.
Emily’s path to Tinker was not a straightforward one. Having previously found herself unsatisfied with her career choices, she made the bold decision to return to school, earning an Associate degree in Environmental Science from Monroe Community College and a Bachelor’s degree in General Biology from SUNY Brockport. Her love for natural history, coupled with a lifelong interest in the earth and its ecosystems, led her to this unique role. Emily had volunteered at historic houses, had an interest in beekeeping, and had experience working with children and older adults – skills that naturally aligned with the responsibilities she would take on at Tinker. roughout her career, Emily has drawn inspiration from several key figures, including her eighth-grade science teacher, Mr. Wilcox, who nurtured her interest in the “strange” sciences like geology and paleontology. More recently, her close friend Kris has provided unwavering support and encouragement as Emily transitioned from being “Tim (Pratt, Tinker Director)’s secretary and helper” to his righthand partner in managing the park.
What drives Emily in her role at Tinker are the visitors. Ensuring the park remains welcoming and informative is at the heart of her daily efforts. She takes great joy in the variety of tasks her job entails, starting each day with a cup of coffee alongside Tim, as they review a to-do list that is never the same from one day to the next. e unpredictability of the work is something Emily cherishes, and it’s one of her favorite aspects of working at Tinker.
Some of Emily’s most cherished moments at Tinker come from the connections she’s made with the community. Whether it’s encountering new animal babies in the spring, being recognized by a child as “Miss Emily from Tinker” when she’s out on her bike, or hearing positive feedback about improvements made to the park, these interactions add up to create a deep sense of fulfillment. However, her role also comes with surprises, particularly the unpredictability of trends and preferences in event participation, which has taught her to remain adaptable and open-minded.
Stepping into a leadership role has been one of Emily’s most significant challenges. e responsibilities she now carries, including decisions that affect the livelihoods and well-being of others, have required her to grow and evolve as an individual. Fortunately, she has a supportive team at Tinker, and she relies on them to help her navigate these challenges and confront her own biases and weaknesses.
Under Emily’s guidance, Tinker Nature Park serves the community in numerous ways. e park remains free and open to the public, “forever and always,” Emily insists, offering educational programs that
foster environmental awareness of local flora, fauna, and ecosystems at Hansen Nature Center and on the park grounds. Community events, workshops, and festivals bring people together and create a sense of belonging, while the Tinker Homestead & Farm Museum preserves and showcases local history and heritage.
Tinker Park’s collaborations with other organizations have been vital to its success. Working with the Rochester City School District (RCSD), Tinker field trips are cost-free for students, and they currently seek sponsorships to cover transportation costs. Emily and her team participate in the Hometown History Expo at the Genesee Country Village & Museum and regularly partner with the Henrietta Town Historian and the Monroe County Soil & Water Conservation District for various programs and conservation efforts.
Reflecting on changes in outdoor education and conservation over the years, Emily feels optimistic. She notes a shi towards experiential learning for all ages, with hands-on engagement with nature prioritized and a growing emphasis on community involvement in conservation efforts. is evolution to a more interdisciplinary and collaborative approach gives her hope for the future.
Emily is passionate about sharing her knowledge with the public, particularly when it comes to conservation. She cautions against the oversimplification of complex environmental issues o en found on social media and encourages individuals to seek out reliable information and engage in informed discussions.
