The time of the falling leaves has come again. Once more in our morning walk we tread upon carpets of gold and crimson, of brown and bronze, woven by the winds or the rains out of these delicate textures while we slept. How beautifully the leaves grow old! How full of light and color are their last days! There are exceptions, of course. The leaves of most of the fruit-trees fade and wither and fall ingloriously. They bequeath their heritage of color to their fruit. Upon it they lavish the hues which other trees lavish upon their leaves....

But in October what a feast to the eye our woods and groves present! The whole body of the air seems enriched by their calm, slow radiance. They are giving back the light they have been absorbing from the sun all summer.

~John Burroughs, “The Falling Leaves,” Under the Maples

GENERAL CONTRACTING

EXPECT

Hidden issues: Contractors may uncover all sorts of issues that need to be addressed before a project can progress. Examples include the presence of asbestos (common in older homes), plumbing problems, incorrectly wired electrical systems, and leaks or moisture issues. These problems also can impact the cost of the project, so set aside some money in the budget for unforeseen expenses. Chances are you are going to need some extra money to handle a few surprises during the project.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55.The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

Create another drop zone. If the entryway is too small to serve its purpose, outfit another room or area that also can do the job. This can be a laundry room or mudroom area. Install shelves, a bench, cabinets and hooks. Just be sure this space is close enough to the entryway to make it useful.

I have what looks like mold on the soil of a Christmas Cactus, with no indications on the leaves or stems. How shouldItreatit?

Assuming it is mold or fungus on the soil of the Christmas cactus, that usually indicates it is being watered too much so the soil remains moist, which allows mold to grow. It would help to see the mold to be sure. Contact your local Cooperative Extension for analysis. An alternate possibility

is that the area where the plant is located has high humidity which could also encourage a fungus or mold.

One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

Magnificent Autumn! He comes not like a pilgrim, clad in russet weeds. He comes not like a hermit, clad in gray. But he comes like a warrior, with the stain of blood upon his brazen mail. His crimson scarf is rent.... The wind.... wafts to us the odor of forest leaves, that hang wilted on the dripping branches, or drop into the stream. Their gorgeous tints are gone, as if the autumnal rains had washed them out. Orange, yellow, and scarlet, all are changed to one melancholy russet hue.... There is a melancholy and continual roar in the tops of the tall pines.... It is the funeral anthem of the dying year.

Use the proper gear. A leaf rake fans out like a triangle and comes in various widths. Choose a lightweight material that can be easily maneuvered. A metal rake is for stones and dirt and shouldn’t be used for leaves. To get between bushes, a smaller version of a leaf rake, called a shrub rake, should be used.

Makes 4 servings

SPICY STEAK TAMPICO

4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick)

2 tablespoons olive oil

Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below)

1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper

2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes.

3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

Bob Herson: Master of Flies and StreamsA Lifelong Journey in Fishing

For Bob Herson, fishing is more than just a hobby; it’s a way of life. He says he tries to fish just about every day of the year, and loves having Caledonia’s Spring Creek in his literal backyard. He passes on his knowledge and expertise to both novice anglers and seasoned fishermen.

Growing up as the only boy in a household with six sisters, Bob recognized the need for his own space and escape. He found that escape in fishing. His Long Island family was not interested in fishing, and his dad wasn’t really an outdoorsman. Bob’s Kindergarten teacher, however, piqued the boy’s interest when he read stories about fishing. Bob says he vividly remembers that day sitting on the rug around the teacher’s chair as he read the stories.

A sister took Bob fishing and his interest grew. By 12, his passion ignited, he had his first official lessons in the Catskills. With his first fly tying kit, Bob started tying flies for other people by the age of 14. He notes that he selected his college, the University of Oregon, based on its proximity to nearby streams. He jokes that he tied flies for beer money in college and has since found quite the side job in fly tying for individuals and wholesale business. Now, Bob ties flies 3-4 hours/day even with a full-time job as a family therapist working with high-risk families. He finds it and fishing to be quite therapeutic a er his workdays. He says “I have a crazy job where I see some really bad things, sad things, so fishing is the best way to clear my head. Being out in nature is great.”

Bob runs a retail business, selling a few flies at a time to individual customers, and a wholesale business, making and selling hundreds and thousands of flies for customers, including for Dette Flies shop in the Catskills, where Bob says he learned a lot from Mary Dette. He says, “there was maybe half a day three years ago I had no flies to tie.”

Bob also collects bamboo fly rods and fishing books, amassing probably a thousand books on the subject, he says. Bob’s fly patterns are featured heavily in Mike Valla’s 2023 book, Fly Fishing Guide to New York State. Amidst his entrepreneurial endeavors and his dedication to the cra , Bob remains grounded in the camaraderie that fishing has afforded him. He cherishes the friendships forged through his artful fly creations, relishing the occasional solitary expedition or the company of a close confidante. Oatka Creek and Spring Brook hold a special place in his heart, though the latter languishes in disrepair, a fact that troubles Bob deeply. Once a thriving hub of angling activity, Spring Brook’s decline can be traced back to an avian incursion that decimated its fish population, resulting in a marked decline in angler visits. Bob advocates for the concerted efforts of the Caledonia and Mumford communities, urging them to focus on stream restoration, with dam removal as a pivotal step

Bob advises budding anglers to start with spin fishing to grasp essential techniques before delving into the complexities of fly fishing. Bob acknowledges the perceived elitism sometimes in the fly-fishing community and encourages a more accessible

Bob finds solace and clarity in the solitude of fishing. In a profession that o en exposes him to the depths of human struggles, the act of casting a line becomes a form of therapy. Nature, for Bob, is a healing force.

Bob says one of the most underrated places to fish is Genesee Country Village & Museum, where he says fishing is great in the springtime. “It’s gorgeous and worth it,” he says.

Bob is thankful for that pivotal day in Kindergarten when the teacher spun the fishing stories that ignited Bob’s passion. “If I didn’t experience that, I’d probably not be fishing,” he says.

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY

CHARRED GREEN BEANS WITH LEMON VERBENA PESTO

Serves 2 to 4

Green Beans

11/2 pounds slender green beans

2 teaspoons olive oil

Lemon Verbena Pesto

1 cup fresh lemon verbena leaves (substitutefreshlemonbalmleaves)

2 garlic cloves

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4cuppinenutsorEnglishwalnuts

1/2 cup olive oil

Fine kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Prepare a hot fire in your grill. Toss the beans with olive oil and place in a perforated grill basket or wok set on a baking sheet.

For the Lemon Verbena Pesto, combine the lemon verbena, garlic, cheese, and nuts in a food processor and pulse to puree. Slowly add the olive oil with the processor running until the mixture thickens and emulsifies, about 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper. The pesto will keep in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days, or it may be frozen for up to 3 months.

Place the grill wok or basket directly over the fire and stir-grill, tossing the beans with wooden paddles or grill spatulas until crisp-tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the grilled beans to a large bowl and toss with about 1/4 cup of the Lemon Verbena Pesto or to taste.

International Dot Day, September 15, is celebrated by adults and children for boosting courage so that their creative potential is released. It is a great day to connect and collaborate, and also to celebrate self-expression.

DOT AY

On September 15, 2003, author and illustrator of children’s books, Peter H. Reynolds released his book “The Dot.” In the story, Vashti felt like she couldn’t draw — but her art teacher wouldn’t accept that. “Just make a mark, and see where it takes you,” the teacher said to Vashti. So, she marked her parchment paper with a small dot. The next day, Vashti was surprised to find her paper with the dot on the classroom wall.

Vashti was so proud of her work that she started creating drawings with different kinds of dots.

Suspecting and Diagnosing Hereditary Hemochromatosis

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was diagnosed with hemochromatosis 13 months before he died. I recommended that his blood relatives get tested so they can get treatment early, if necessary. Some doctors don’t know to check ferritin levels to make a diagnosis in a person with a family history of hemochromatosis. -- C.G.

ANSWER: Hereditary hemochromatosis (HHC) is a genetic disease of iron overload. In a person with HHC, the intestines absorb as much iron as they can all the time, even if the body doesn’t need it, whereas a person without HHC will simply stop absorbing iron if it isn’t necessary. The iron can go into and damage many organs, especially the liver, heart, bone marrow, hormone-producing glands and skin. The diagnosis should be suspected in close relatives of an affected person. Although checking ferritin levels is useful in making the diagnosis, iron tests, total iron-binding capacity tests and hemoglobin tests should also be ordered. If the family member has a recognized genetic mutation, such as C282Y homozygote or C282Y/H63D compound heterozygote, those genetic tests may also be useful in making the diagnosis. The diagnosis should even be suspected in people with vague symptoms, such as weakness and fatigue. I teach my students and residents to consider the possibility of iron overload, as it is common, easily tested for, and easily treated with phlebotomy (blood removal). Symptomatic HHC is more common at an earlier age in men than women, but it still should be considered in younger women.

A clinician should also consider iron overload in people with enlarged livers or abnormal liver enzymes, diabetes, changes in skin tone (bronze or gray), heart failure and some kinds of arthritis. Most people with these conditions do not have HHC, but initial testing is cheap and easy.

Treatment can be done by donating blood. My first patient with HHC donated over 100 units of blood before his blood levels came down to the target range.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SENIORS

Fishing: Of course not all outdoor activities need to make seniors huff and puff.Fishing provides a great reason to get outdoors, and many individuals devoted to fishing report feeling less stressed after a day spent casting for their favorite fish. Individuals who consume what they catch also can benefit by improving their diets, as the American Heart Association notes that consuming certain types of fish has been linked to a lower risk for heart disease and obesity.

Grilled Sausage Skewer Sandwiches

Cook time: 15 minutes

Servings: 6

1 regular size package Eckrich Smoked Sausage

1 small red onion, cut into 1-inch pieces

1 red bell pepper, seeded, cut into 1-inch pieces

6 wooden skewers, 10 inches long 1/2 cup Italian salad dressing, divided

6 bolillo or sandwich rolls, split 1 avocado, cut into 1/2-inch thick slices

1/4 cup cilantro leaves Heat grill to medium-high.

Cut sausage into 1/2-inch thick slices. Thread sausage, onion and bell peppers alternately onto skewers. Brush 1/4 cup salad dressing on skewered sausage and vegetables.

Grill until sausage is golden brown and vegetables are crisp-tender, about 10 minutes, turning once. Brush remaining salad dressing on rolls. Fill rolls with grilled sausage and vegetables. Divide avocado and cilantro onto each.

Tip: To broil sausage rather than grill, heat broiler to medium-high, follow the same skewer preparation instructions and broil about 10 minutes, or until sausage is golden brown and vegetables are crisp-tender.

STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS

Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.”

According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

Note Left on My Car

To whoever left a note on my car under the windshield wiper, you have done the right thing. You said, “I accidentally backed into your car. I’m so sorry. I checked everywhere on both cars and it appeared there was no damage.” and you left your phone number. Thank you! We need many more people like you in the world - people who are respectful of others’ property and take responsibility for their actions when they have an accident. You could’ve just as easily ran off, but you took responsibility for your error and did the right thing. By the way, I checked everything and there was no damage.

Thank you!

The Sunday before Labor Day, I had a fish dinner and coffee for lunch in the Canal View Restaurant in Newark. When I asked for my bill, I was told the couple at the table next to my booth had paid it. They had already left so I couldn’t thank them. Hopefully they will see this and know how much I appreciate it. Thank you so much! How thoughtful!

Youth Football

Hey youth football team. Want to know why your numbers are down? You might want to look internally at the coaches of these kids. They do not make it fun and they are obviously only coaching for their own kids. They are more concerned about statistics of YOUTH FOOTBALL players and making highlight films and posting these so -called stats on social media touting how great they are. What about the other players, the average players or the players who are on the fence about playing.? This is what youth football should be about, making a connection with ALL the players. Is the board really afraid of the coaches? Is this why they will not speak up? Bring back small town football......please!!

Refused service at local Urgent Care

To the women at the local Urgent Care, you are clearly in the wrong profession. My daughter was laughed at and mocked (thankfully she has a witness) when all she wanted to do was be seen and receive an x-ray!

All you wanted to do was gossip and make fun of those who need help!? You have been reported!

YARD SALE TIPS

Have a nice display. First impressions can mean a lot. Buyers are more apt to visit neat, well-laid-out sales than those that are just a bunch of boxes that have to be dug through.

While many people visit yard sales looking for antiques or other unique items that likely can’t be found at traditional retailers, yard sale shoppers should know that their efforts can be great for the environment. Shoppers can browse through gently used items that no longer serve utility for the seller but may be just what buyers are looking for. Rather than throwing out belongings that get little use, people who organize a sale are reducing their contributions to nearby landfills.

WHAT SCHOOLS ARE DOING ABOUT CHILDHOOD OBESITY

Modifying school lunch offerings: Schools are taking inventory of not only the foods they offer on lunch menus, but also the feel of the cafeteria so that healthy eating is encouraged. This may include removing vending machines that contain unhealthy snacks or providing a greater array of offerings that include fresh fruits, whole grains and lean protein sources. Some schools also are investing in components, such as salad bars, to store, prepare and display healthy foods.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a pet rabbit, Brownie, who is nearly 10 years old! He’s a Holland Lop, I think. He doesn’t do much at this age but sort of half-heartedly flop around his cage and the porch, then he settles onto the raised shelf in his cage and nibbles on carrots. He seems healthy, just slow. How much longer does he have le ? Do you think he’s lonely? -- Vicky R., Macon, Georgia

DEAR VICKY: First of all, wow! Ten years is quite a lifespan for a Holland Lop. It’s a testament to how well you care for him.

While the average lifespan of this rabbit breed is six to eight years, I have heard of H-Lops reaching 10, 12 or even 16 years of age! Care and comfort are really important for rabbits at any age. ey need a secure hutch, stable temperatures in summer and winter, fresh water always available, and good nutrition. ey also need things to gnaw on so their front teeth don’t grow too long, as well as plenty of fresh vegetables.

Introducing a new rabbit to the mix can be risky. ey might not take to each other, and fighting with another rabbit can cause stress, which can be deadly.

It sounds like Brownie is doing really well for his age. I recommend checking in with his vet if you notice any changes in his behavior or ability to get around. It sounds like you’re a little concerned that he isn’t moving around as much. Contacting the vet within 48 hours is a good rule for any changes in behavior, diet or activity for rabbits and other small pets.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment

Scout local garage sales: Garage sales are one way to bargain hunt and benefit the environment at the same time. Who knows what treasures you may be able to find at nearby garage sales? When shopping, set a spending limit and look for certain items you need, such as a bicycle or furniture. You may be surprised to find a quality item that costs much less than a brand new store-bought product.
