Use light wisely. The photography resource Expert Photography recommends taking photos primarily during the golden hours. These are right after sunrise and just before sunset. The light during these times of day has a softer, hazy quality that will illuminate subjects evenly and less harshly than midday, when shadows also may pose challenges. Taking photos during these times also means fewer people around and a better chance that wildlife will be out and about.

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER
Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduceslippingonwetsurfacesin the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs.
Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot.
Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.

TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS
Avoid electrical work. Complicated electrical work is best left to the professionals. Estimates from the Electrical Safety Foundation International indicate that electrical malfunctions cause more than 50,000 house fires each year. Such malfunctions can occur for myriad reasons, and a lack of experience working with electrical circuits and breakers could make homes vulnerable to malfunctions and fires. It’s also worth noting that homeowners’ insurance policies may not cover damage caused by DIY electrical work. So at the very least homeowners should contact their insurance providers to determine if any accidents or injuries caused by DIY electrical work would be covered by their policies.
STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE AN APPRAISER’S VISIT
Clean the house. A dirty home that is full of clutter will not make the best impression on appraisers. Dirty homes may be vulnerable to insect infestations that can lead to structural problems with the home. While a dirty home is not necessarily an indicator of infestations or a reflection of a home’s value, a clean home will create a stronger first impression with the appraiser.

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE
Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs.
The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

* To fix a hole in drywall that requires a healthy helping of joint compound, you can cut a piece of screen slightly bigger than the hole and tack it to the inside of the drywall. You also can wad up a piece of aluminum foil and shove it in the hole, pressing it in a bit to create a recess for the compound. e foil will keep the compound at the site of the hole, allowing it to set up instead of fall down. * "I recently did a little work on my car, and a erward I washed and waxed it. KUDOS TO FAIRPORT FIREMEN!
We recently had our [presidential candidate] sign stolen from our yard. If I recall, the Constitution says we have free speech, not if it only pertains to your view. We have had presidents that I did not care for, but gave the office the respect it deserved. Whatever happened to the saying to agree to disagree? Please, less hate and more kindness, understanding and love.
Rude and Dangerous
Drivers
Saturday eve at 9PM, my sister and I were worried when we didn’t see a clearly labeled ‘shuttle stop’ at the Fairport Music fest. We hailed 2 delightful young men in a Jeep type vehicle parked by the Fest entrance and told them of our concern. One ran down the street to flag the shuttle he saw coming to ensure the driver didn’t miss us on the curb. These men were SO kind, friendly and eager to help 2 seniors in need! I am sorry I didn’t get their names for a personal thanks.
When my car suddenly became undrivable in the middle of the right lane on [local road] across from [local plaza] late Friday afternoon, I did my best to get as far onto the shoulder as possible. I turned my 4-ways flashers on, called my husband, and called 911 to report my car in the road because I was afraid of causing an accident. To the woman who slowed while driving down the far lane on the other side of the road, thank you for asking if I needed help. To everyone else, and especially those on my side of the road who didn’t slow down or stop and worse yet, sped up to swerve into the next lane even though you could so easily have caused an actual accident, shame on you. I hope you never find yourself in a similar situation one day. And to the police officer who asked if I’d run out of gas...since my car was still running, no I did not. The real cause: a snapped drive axle.

DVT Patient Switches to Aspirin With Good Results
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old female who has been on Xarelto for years due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT). I also have an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter. I read that low-dose aspirin (325 mg) is just as effective in preventing clots in the legs as Xarelto, which is very expensive. My doctor advises against changing to aspirin, but won’t give me an explanation as to why. I switched anyway, and the redness in my foot disappeared. After one month of taking 325 mg of coated aspirin daily, I have no symptoms and actually feel better. What are your thoughts? -- A.B.
ANSWER: Although aspirin is better than nothing, it has been proven to be less effective than Xarelto and similar medicines in people who are at risk for blood clots. In a yearlong trial comparing the two, recurrences of DVT (a blood clot in the deep veins of the leg) occurred in just over 1% of people taking Xarelto and in 4.4% of people taking aspirin. (This study used low-dose aspirin -- 100 mg -- rather than the full-dose of 325 mg that you are taking.) The risk of bleeding was about the same among the aspirin group and the Xarelto group.
Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory, which may be why the redness in your foot disappeared. I doubt it had anything to do with a blood clot.
For people at a high risk, I recommend against changing from a more-effective medicine like Xarelto to aspirin. In your case, you are protected against a blood clot in the lung by your filter, which is designed to catch any clot before it can get to the lung. Unfortunately, the IVC filter slightly increases the risk of a recurrence of a blood clot in the legs, so it’s important to keep taking medication to reduce your risk.
Given the serious nature of a blood clot, I can’t recommend disregarding your doctor’s advice, although you deserve a thorough explanation from your doctor. If the main issue for your wanting to change medications is the expense, you might ask your doctor if there are lessexpensive alternatives that would still be as effective as Xarelto. The manufacturer also offers a program to help with expenses.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

In 1892, the French newspaper La Siècle printed a game that was akin to Sudoku in that each row and column had to contain all the designated numbers, but unlike Sudoku, it involved numerals higher than 9 and engaged solvers’ mathematical skills, not their logic center.
Flash forward to 1979. Circumstantial evidence points to Indiana architect Howard Garns publishing a puzzle of his own invention (at that time named “Number Place”) in Dell Magazine that would become the game we now know as Sudoku.
IT KEEPS OUR MINDS SHARP
Actively participating in things that exercise our brains, especially those that involve math, is a good way to keep our minds sharp. Sudoku can increase focus and concentration as well as alleviate depression. Studies also suggest that puzzles and word games help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Who knew Sudoku could be so good for your health?

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES
Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

Fight Back Against Fleas
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My apartment has been infested with fleas all summer! I’m so frustrated. My two cats are suffering from hot spots and patchy fur because of the flea bites, and I’ve constantly got bites all over my legs. I don’t want to give my cats flea medicine because I heard it is dangerous to their health. What can I do to get rid of these fleas? -- Cara J. in Macon, Georgia
DEAR CARA: You’re going to have to plan an all-out assault on the flea infestation, and do it as soon as possible.
Talk to your veterinarian about the health risks and benefits of various flea and tick treatments. Ticks can give your cats heartworm and tapeworm. Your cats’ health is at greater risk right now from not doing anything than they would be from an effective treatment.
Next, get rid of the fleas and their eggs in your house with a complete cleaning and treatment. Take down the curtains and wash and dry them. Wash all your bedding and clothes. Dust from ceiling to floor. Vacuum the carpets thoroughly. Wash all mats and put out in the sun to dry. Clean every corner of the apartment. Clean fabric furniture with a steam cleaner. Flip the sofa and vacuum up all the dust bunnies and dirt.
Finally, with the cats sequestered in a safe room, treat the carpet to kill remaining fleas and their eggs. You can use a direct spray or an insecticide that is sprinkled into the carpet and vacuumed up. is all-out assault will nearly wipe out the fleas in your home. But they can (and will) come back. To keep them on the retreat, vacuum twice a week, wash your cats’ bedding weekly, and make sure the cats get their flea/tick/heartworm medication on schedule.

DID YOU KNOW? Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

PAMELA MELROY:
PITTSFORD’S TRAILBLAZER IN
space exploration
BY KAYLEE DUDA
Among notable figures who have emerged from Pittsford, NY is Pamela Melroy, a former NASA astronaut whose career has inspired many, both locally and globally.
Pamela Ann Melroy was born in 1961 in Palo Alto, California but spent much of her formative years in Pittsford, where she developed a keen interest in science and aviation, a passion that would eventually propel her into the cosmos.
A er graduating from Bishop Kearney High School, Melroy pursued her undergraduate degree in Physics and Astronomy from Wellesley College in 1983, followed by a Master of Science degree in Earth and Planetary Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1984.
Melroy served as a pilot in the United States Air Force, where she flew KC-10 and C-141 aircra . She was deployed during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and became an accomplished pilot with over 5,000 hours of flight time. Melroy’s military service honed her aviation skills and demonstrated her leadership capabilities, which would prove pivotal in her role at NASA.
In 1994, Melroy was selected as a NASA astronaut, joining the agency during an exciting era of space exploration. Over her career with NASA, Melroy flew on three Space Shuttle missions, serving as a pilot on STS-92 in 2000 and STS-112 in 2002, and as a commander on STS-120 in 2007. Her mission as a commander made her only the second woman ever to command a Space Shuttle mission, a testament to her exceptional abilities and trailblazing spirit.
During her missions, Melroy played a critical role in the assembly and maintenance of the International Space Station (ISS), contributing to scientific research and international cooperation in space. Her leadership and technical expertise were instrumental in advancing humanity’s understanding of living and working in space.
Bishop Kearney High School. Melroy said she hopes to inspire people and let them know dreams do come true. She said, “Rochester’s legacy of innovation in science and technology continues to propel our nation forward in space exploration. I am proud to see firsthand how this community is shaping the future of space science.”
Melroy discussed the future of NASA as private companies develop spaceflight capabilities relatively close to Earth. She says NASA can partner in that area, “definitely not done with microgravity,” but as the commercial industry takes on more responsibility in what she called “space economy,” NASA can support the way they do in today’s aviation industry while also keeping their eyes on the farther reaches of the solar system.
Pamela Melroy’s contributions to space exploration extend far beyond her missions. A er retiring from NASA, she has continued to influence the field through her work with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Defense, where she has focused on developing space policy and advancing aerospace technology.
In June 2021, Melroy was appointed Deputy Administrator of NASA, where she has been pivotal in shaping the agency’s future, particularly its efforts in returning humans to the Moon under the Artemis program and preparing for eventual human missions to Mars, which she anticipates will happen around the 2040s.
In June 2024, Melroy spoke at the Rochester Museum & Science Center about continued collaborations between NASA and Rochester institutions and corporations, such as L3Harris, which contributes to the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope that is set to help observe billions of galaxies and other phenomena, working synergistically with the James Webb Space Telescope.
ere she shared that “her love for NASA grew because of Rochester,” inspired by the Strasenburgh Planetarium as well as her education at
RMSC’s President/ CEO, Hillary Olson, says Melroy’s spacesuit is proudly displayed at the Strasenburgh Planetarium to symbolize Melroy’s “dedication to space exploration, aligning perfectly with the RMSC’s mission to inspire curiosity, exploration, and engagement across history, science, culture, and the natural world.”
Pamela Melroy’s journey from Pittsford to space inspires young people, especially young women like me to pursue careers in STEM fields such as aerospace engineering. Her story exemplifies the power of perseverance, dedication, and passion in achieving our dreams.
Reflecting on her incredible accomplishments, it’s clear that Pamela Melroy has le an indelible mark on space exploration. Her legacy inspires future generations to reach for the stars and reminds us that the sky is not the limit: it’s just the beginning.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW
Be brief yet effective
A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.

Protecting Honeybees
If you come across a hive, leave it alone. It’s best not to disturb a hive and honeybee colony. If bees are located where they can become a nuisance, contact a local bee expert to see if the hive can be moved.
