PRACTICAL GIFTS FOR RECENT GRADUATES

Stick to paper invitations. Many schools provide students with invitations, but graduates and their families can choose to buy their own. Paper invitations are more personal than digital alternatives. Paper invitations also give the impression that the ceremony will be formal.

New wardrobe: Gift cards to retailers that specialize in business attire often make welcome gifts for new grads. Some students may need to update their wardrobes so they can look more professional on interviews or at school networking functions.

(585) 425-3894 AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Maintain good posture. Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens. When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries. Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture. Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist.

The popularity of outdoor living spaces has been growing for years. A 2014 study from the home remodeling and design platform Houzz found that 56 percent of homeowners were making updates to improve their yards for entertaining. Similarly, nearly 60 percent of architectural practices surveyed by the American Institute of Architects in 2016 said outdoor living spaces were popular features in the homes they built. Outdoor living spaces may also be sound investments for homeowners looking to improve the resale value of their properties. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2017 “Cost vs. Value” report, outdoor living spaces returned between 55 and 71 percent of homeowners’ initial investments at resale. When planning an outdoor living space, homeowners with ample backyards have much to work with. However, to make the most of the space while simultaneously hoping to get as strong a return on their investments as possible, homeowners should look to create spaces that offer broad appeal and are not too personalized.

If possible, try to coordinate with other friends who are graduating so that parties are not on the same day or at least not at the same time. This way everyone who would like to attend can do so. If friends do attend, The Emily Post Institute suggests that graduates explain to their friends that family will be at the party and that polite behavior is expected.

KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN Install motion detecting lights around gardens. Motion detection technology might be enough to deter nocturnal wildlife from trampling or eating gardens. Animals might be spooked and run away when lights suddenly turn on. A similar approach can be taken using noise instead of lights. Gardeners who hope to avoid erecting barriers around their gardens can put up posts instead, attaching aluminum cans or wind chimes to the posts that will make noise when animals come near. Much like light, noise can be enough to deter animals.

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

* In 2009, 59-year-old Italian neurosurgeon Claudio Vitalae had a heart attack in the middle of performing a brain surgery. He powered through it when he realized his patient would never recover if he stopped, despite the urging of his staff and his chest pains worsening. Half an hour after finishing the surgery, Mr. Vitale had an angioplasty, later telling the press, “I’m not a hero, I only did my duty.”

Cancer and COVID-19

By Matilda Charles

Keep Your Spirits Up Depending where we live, many of us are still in lockdown. Still, there are ways to keep our spirits up. Plants can make all the difference in how we feel in our environment. Check your local nursery's website for small plants you can either have delivered or pick up at the curb. Some of the easiest to grow are pothos, spider plant and philodendron. Beware, however, if you have pets. Be sure you can either hang up your plant or put it up on a bookcase where the pet can't reach it. Books we enjoyed a long time ago can take us back to a time and place that was calm and safe. Look on your own bookshelves or consider getting an e-reader if you don't want to take a chance going into your own library, assuming it's open. Baking can fill the house with lovely smells. Since finding flour is impossible in many parts of the country, look online for hundreds of recipes that don't require flour. No-flour banana bread, flourless chocolate cake ... you can even make oatmeal muffins. Just be certain you can acquire all the ingredients before you set your heart on making a recipe. Zoom is the online conference program that so many companies are using for business meetings. We can learn Zoom, too, and stay in touch with family and friends if we have a computer or device with a camera. Explore the basic free version of Zoom. You'll be limited to 40 minutes in group meetings, with no limit on one-toone meetings. Your first step will be to read online instructions and get comfortable with the steps to set up a connection. Your second step will be to tell family and friends you're ready to start Zooming! (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

The COVID-19 outbreak of 2020 caught many people, particularly those in the western hemisphere, off guard. As the virus spread, the lives of hundreds of millions of people throughout North America and Europe changed dramatically and seemingly overnight, prompting many to wonder if they or their loved ones were going to get sick. No one was thought to be immune to COVID-19, though many people were unfortunately believed to be more vulnerable to the disease than others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults and people with serious chronic medical conditions are at the greatest risk of getting sick from COVID-19. The American Cancer Society notes that cancer patients, like groups with an elevated risk of getting sick from COVID-19, must do all they can to avoid being exposed to the virus. That’s because the immune systems of cancer patients, particularly those in active chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant patients, can be severely weakened. In fact, in March 2020 officials with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center warned that early data from China and Italy, two countries which experienced early and widespread outbreaks of the disease, indicated that cancer patients would be at increased risk of getting the virus. Are all cancer patients at risk? Dr. Steve Pergram, the medical director of infection prevention at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, said that patients with blood malignancies are most at risk for COVID-19. Blood malignancies include non-Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and multiple myeloma. While people with these forms of cancer may be most at risk of getting COVID-19, it’s important to note that all cancer patients, including those who recently concluded treatment, are vulnerable. Those who concluded treatment should know that the aftereffects of treatment can linger long after treatment programs have ended, and those aftereffects may continue to compromise patients’ immune systems. What can cancer patients do to protect themselves from COVID-19? Cancer patients should embrace the safety protocols recommended by the CDC, including social distancing measures and limiting direct contact with other people. Seniors in cancer treatment should take advantages of opportunities to limit their exposure to COVID-19, such as visiting grocery stores during seniors-only hours and opting to participate in digital religious services instead of in-person services. In addition, patients can work with their cancer care teams to devise ways to continue receiving treatment without elevating their risk of exposure to COVID-19.

POLL

Fostering a Pet vs. Adopting DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is the difference between pet adoption and fostering? -- Jess in Knoxville DEAR JESS: An adopted pet is going to his or her forever home, a successful story every animal shelter wants to see replay again and again. But many pets aren’t quite ready to be adopted. They may be too young. They may be recovering from abuse and injuries. They may need to be observed to figure out what home environment is best for them. Sometimes, a shelter runs out of space. And some rescue organizations don’t have shelter facilities at all. In all these circumstances, this is where foster families come into play. A foster is a temporary arrangement, either for a predetermined amount of time or until a pet is adopted. Rather than being stuck in a chilly kennel with little interaction, a foster pet stays in a warm, loving home -- an arrangement that vastly reduces their stress and helps them heal. Some pets are never ready for adoption and remain a foster for the rest of their life. Others are adopted by the foster family if approved by the rescue organization. Caring for a foster pet takes dedication, and it helps to have experience caring for pets. If you’re interested in being a foster parent to a pet, check with the local shelter or rescue group. They will have an application for you to fill out, and then will evaluate you and your living space to determine if you are a good fit for the foster program and which pets would do best in your care. Will lavender grow in and around small stones if it has some soil under it? Lavender is a sun worshiper, loves heat, and grows best in infertile, welldrained and slightly alkaline soil. Of course, lavender plants need soil, but will do just fine in an area where there are many small stones. Avoid heavy clay soil that does not drain well. Plant in the spring when danger of frost has passed, mixing some compost into the soil to get your plants off to a good start. Some lavender growers recommend putting a layer of crushed oyster shells or limestone

in the bottom of the planting hole to improve drainage and to increase the alkalinity of the soil. Also, some suggest mulching around lavender plants with pea sized gravel. The theme, good drainage is essential. Fertilize sparingly or you will get leaves at the expense of flowers. Lavender thrives in dry conditions so be careful not to overwater to prevent root rot. Also, dry heat helps to release lavender’s strong and wonderful fragrance and because of that aroma, deer generally stay away.

Garden stores generally stock two cultivars, ‘Hidcote’ with silvery foliage and deep purple flowers and ‘Munstead’ with green foliage and a violet or blue-purple flower. In the past few years, one called ‘SuperBlue’ has become more popular and is one that I find does very well here. It is a little shorter and heavier blooming cultivar than the two mentioned above. lymphomatoid papulosis. It’s not a bad case, but it’s enough to make me worry. I know it’s rare for this to turn into cancer, but there is always a chance. Doctors often misdiagnose it, but thankfully I have the best pathologist in the world. My daughter is being treated with UVB light, which worked in the past, but now is not helping. I don’t want to do methotrexate. I worry about every dot that pops up on her, and if it doesn’t go away, I think the worst. -- M.W.M. ANSWER: Lymphomatoid papulosis is a rare disease, most common in people in their 40s, but can happen in children and older adults as well. The cause is unknown, and although a virus is suspected, it hasn’t been found. It is not contagious. The rash of LyP is not specific and needs to be confirmed through biopsy. Spots are relatively large (but less than an inch), and usually red but with a white center that can turn black. The rash comes and goes. A skilled pathologist in combination with an experienced dermatologist is necessary to make the diagnosis. Adults are treated with methotrexate if the lesions are in a cosmetically important area, especially the face. UVA light is better studied than UVB light, especially in children, but an expert would be the most appropriate to recommend the best treatment. Your concern about cancer is understandable. Rates of associated cancer -- specifically, lymphoma, a blood and bone marrow cancer -- have been reported in 5% to 50% of people with LyP. Unfortunately, apart from people with a specific gene rearrangement, there’s no way yet known to predict who is likely to get lymphoma nor any way of preventing it. She will need to be vigilant. Fortunately, the lymphomas, if they do develop, are usually effectively treated. ***

that my son had saved for me. He loves to hunt his own food. When I ate it, I realized that when he had gone to Alaska, he had not only hunted tuna but also black bear. He had used the black bear grease to cure the tuna. I was mortified that he had used a protected animal to preserve his tuna. I reluctantly ate it anyway. Now, I am worried about my health. Will anything happen to me health-wise because I have eaten the grease from a black bear from Alaska? The bear was wild, so could it have had a disease, like rabies? I’m sure it has never been vaccinated. -- Anon. ANSWER: Black bears are hunted in many states, and although it is regulated (you need a license) in Alaska, they are not a protected species under the Endangered Species Act. Black bears are hunted for both sport and meat. The major health risk from consuming bear meat is trichinella, a muscle parasite. The meat must be heated to a high temperature to be sure of killing the parasite. Grease from the bear should not have trichinella risk. Another concern is rabies. Rabies is possible but rare in bears. I doubt it could be transmitted from grease, though, as rabies virus lives in nervous tissue, not fat. ***

Richard B. Hensler June 6, 2020 Canandaigua/Bloomfield- Richard B. Hensler, age 79, passed away on June 6, 2020. Richard was a wonderful and special father and grandfather. He is survived by his three children, Timothy (Penny), Carol (Michael) Dotterweich, and Christine; six grandchildren, Morgan and Courtney Lyon, Ryan Dotterweich, Noelle, Clarissa, and Owen Hensler. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen (Max) Albertson and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Richard was born in Rochester to Bernard and Mary and predeceased by his brother, Gerald. He grew up in Irondequoit and attended St. Thomas the Apostle, Aquinas High School and Alfred State College. He worked at Onondaga Litho and Southco.

We adopted Nyah from Buffalo Pug Rescue in January 2019 and she is fitting in with our family just perfectly! She enjoys hiking, kayaking, playing fetch with Bo and Luke and going for ice cream! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Richard enjoyed walks along Canandaigua Lake, birdwatching, his daily visits to Wegmans and McDonald’s and playing the Lotto. He watched the Yankees and NASCAR. He loved car shows, music, sailing, and spending time at Marble Lake, but most of all spending time with his family. He had a gentle spirt and a big heart with a great sense of humor and enjoyed being around people. He taught us you may not be able to control every situation in life, but you can control your attitude and how you deal with it. Richard believed in always being humble and kind.

Travel tickets: Treat graduates to a trip away from home. Travelers often gain new perspectives and inspiration when visiting a city, state or country for the first time. Travel is good for future entrepreneurs and may help a person stand out in a long list of job applicants. According to Forbes.com, travel can help cultivate relationships outside of one’s existing network and provide ideas from others outside of graduates’ existing personal and professional circles.

I would like to thank Tom who noticed my ad for a nice Small Business opportunity, who gave me a heads up, of laws in NYS (sinkers). Thanks again, R. Dupuis Every year, I get my lawn rolled. I want to thank both Nate and his father Kevin Harding. They not only do a good job, but they are also very nice. In this world, where it has become increasingly harder and harder to meet people who are considerate and personable,

In response to the person who wrote that they felt like they lived next to the Addams Family because their neighbors’ yard was overcome with buttercups and the grass is not cut the way they thought it should be: Really? Really? People are dying with the coronavirus daily, unable to breathe, and you are complaining about your neighbors’ grass? I pray you wake up soon to what really matters such as the Bible states--to love your neighbor as yourself--and pray for suffering neighbors all over the world. In response to Not Ego. it is a delight to know Kevin and Nate. It is a plus when you find someone who not only does a job well done, but who also has a very nice disposition to go along with it. In all the years that Kevin and Nate have rolled my lawn, they have always been so kind to me, as well. Every spring I can rest assured that they will be by to do my lawn. That is how dependable they are. Thank you both so much! I really appreciate the both of you! Thank you to Green Renewable in Manchester. If you are walking alone in the woods, fine, no mask required. However, if you get where you may be in contact with someone, then by all means, you should be wearing a mask. How disrespectful to all the hard-working people in the medical field to be so unwilling to do so. They risk their own lives to save others. There were people in a parking lot the other day, in close proximity to one another. No masks! The governor was asked if people should be fined if not wearing a mask. He said, “Yes.” So, the person who wrote the original Rant did get the facts right. I suggest you do the same! In our town a family has moved out and left their cats. When the protest is for something as universally beneficial as racial justice, then those who stand up for what’s right should be regarded as heroes, just like the Abolitionists, Suffragettes, and Civil Rights activists of the past. others don’t. It was also showing, how others, like myself, have to contend with neighbor’s who just don’t take care of their lawns and yard. So, read the post again to get the true meaning before firing off on someone. The Governor said it loud and clear; when a person wears a mask, they are saying that they respect the other person. They respect the first responders, physicians, nurses, etc., who have been killing themselves to help others. It was said short but sweet, without any room for opinions. Medical professionals are not superheroes. They take care of those with COVID-19, yet they, for the most part, stay well. The Governor said it’s because of the masks and gowns. A mask is a necessary precaution. There is so much posted about liberty. Respect others! That’s what it should be about.

Child Care Council CEO Barbara-Ann Mattle Retiring After More Than Three Decades By Tim Cook

C

hild Care Council Inc. CEO Barbara-Ann Mattle announced today that she is retiring after 37 years in the role, effective June 30, 2020. The Council will soon announce her successor. During her tenure directing the Council’s operations, Barbara-Ann Mattle achieved great success in supporting child care development and in enhancing the quality of child care, both locally and nationally. She helped build Child Care Council from an agency with a $20,000 budget and a staff of 1.5 people into the largest Child Care Resource and Referral agency in New York state, with a $7 million budget, 60 employees and offices in Monroe, Livingston and Wayne counties. Programs and services greatly expanded under Mattle’s leadership, including New York State Family and SchoolSage Child Care Program Registration and Inspection services, New York State Legally Exempt Child Care Enrollment and Inspection, an early childhood professional library, and a Repurpose and More Store. Mattle also facilitated the Region II New York State Regional Infant/ Toddler Resource Center in nine counties; the New York State Pyramid Model program; the USDA Child and Adult Food Programs sponsorship, and the Eat Well/Play Hard nutrition program in eight counties. Other program accomplishments include launching a Special Needs service, multilingual interpretation and support services (Spanish, Swahili, Arabic and Urdu), and a nine-county Infant/Toddler Childhood Mental Health Consultation service. Child Care Council also became one of only 10 sites across the country selected to participate in the Vroom project, a partnership with the Bezos Family Foundation and Child Care Aware of America designed to strengthen the relationship between child care providers and families by focusing on brain-building language and tools. “I am extremely proud of my more than three decades of work to improve and support the development of high-quality child care programs in New York State,” Barbara-Ann Mattle said. “We accomplished a great deal on behalf of area children and families, child care providers and early educators, working with the Council board of directors, leadership team and staff. I want to thank each of them for their amazing work and support over the years to improve access to child care and to connect families with quality child care.” A nationally recognized expert in the child care field, Mattle has earned numerous awards, including the Notable Women in Human Services Hall of Fame and The Human Services Council of New York’s 2020 Strong Nonprofits Leader Award; the Rochester Business Journal’s 2019 Icon Honors award; 2018 National Family Child Care Organization Family Child Care Accreditation Project of the Year; the Family Child Care Association of New York State’s 2018 Friend of Family Child Care Award; and 2017 RIT Alumnus of the Year. She has also made national presentations on topics from how to operate a child care center, to career options and child care center financial management.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration and finance from Rochester Institute of Technology, her child care Barbara-Ann Mattle certificate from St. John Fisher College, and her certificate in child care center facility design from Harvard and Tufts University. Barbara-Ann Mattle resides in Webster, N.Y. About Child Care Council Inc. Founded in 1972, Child Care Council Inc. (childcarecouncil. com) is a nonprofit agency working to improve the quality and increase the quantity of child care in Monroe, Livingston and Wayne counties. One of the leading child care referral agencies in the country, according to the Child Care Aware® national accreditation organization, Child Care Council provides information, training and resources to parents, child care providers and businesses. THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished. Organization can help professionals keep track of their work assignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity. Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of people they dubbed “supertaskers” were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once. Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed. Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week. Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too. Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks. Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand. Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time.
