DID YOU KNOW? Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CREATE DRAMA WITH BOLD PAINT COLORS Stick to boldness on interchangeable items. Those who like to experiment with color may find that they like to switch out the colors now and again. Instead of having to repaint every few months, use decorative items in bright shades to make swapping out color that much easier. For example, replace area rugs, throw pillows and draperies. Paint over terra cotta flower pots when the mood strikes.

One of the benefits to becoming a skilled do-it-yourselfer is the chance to embrace projects that can breathe new life into objects that others might designate for the trash or donation pile. Renovating such items can save money and provide an entirely different purpose for the object. After upgrading design styles or moving, there’s a good chance the average homeowner has a spare dresser or chest of drawers he or she may no longer use. Repurposing such furniture can make for an enjoyable weekend DIY project. With a change of color, removal of drawers or a few minor modifications, dressers can be transformed in many different ways. Before discarding an old dresser, think of all the ways it can be transformed into another useful piece of furniture.

* Looking for the perfect gift for the object of your affection? How about a toilet seat? Don’t laugh -- that’s what Ben Affleck gave Jennifer Lopez when the two were a hot item. Of course, this particular “throne” cost $105,000 and was covered in diamonds, rubies and sapphires! * Mr. and Mrs. Curry, of New York City, got married inside a 120,000-gallon shark tank. The bride wore a white wetsuit and the groom wore black, saying their “I do’s” while circled by different types of sharks and eels. Both were experienced divers but had to broadcast their vows to the wedding officiant, family and friends, since (unsurprisingly) none of them possessed equal nerve to enter the tank.

Pittsford Native Takes Multitasking to the Next Level By Kaitlin Donnan

B

eing involved in her community is second nature to Emily Farrar. If she isn’t out hiking with her Australian Shepard, the Pittsford native divides her time between working as a personal aide to a young woman with Autism, coaching students in a Division 3 program as the head rowing coach at Nazareth College, or leading by example as a PSIA (Professional Ski Instructors of America) Race Coach at Bristol Mountain. A graduate of the University Tulsa in Oklahoma, Farrar majored in Speech-Language Pathology with a minor in Deaf Education on a full-ride rowing scholarship. “There are so many different community projects important to me,” Farrar said. Her work at one job often impacts that of another, and she explains that many of the students she coaches are in the health professional field in some capacity. Some study speech language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or a related field, and many work on a volunteer basis with kids with intellectual disabilities. For Farrar, working as a rowing coach and with a young woman with autism go hand-in-hand. Born with congenital hypothyroidism, Farrar spent two summers as a camper at a Paul Newman SeriousFun camp, a camp for children with life-threatening illnesses. These summers were experiences she said had a serious impact on her life. “It’s one of those places where can feel how it’s going to change your life because of the environment the moment you step into it,” Farrar said. “But you don’t realize how much the people there will inspire you, too.” The impact the camp had on her as a camper led to her returning as a counselor. Her time there centered around children she said had such a love of life, which they shared with her and made her appreciate the small things. “These moments really touch your life, no matter how small an impact you think you have on someone.” Not all experiences were smooth, however, as some victories – like a camper finally sleeping peacefully at a camp bonfire after three nights of homesickness – were not without their struggles. While many of the campers found ways to enjoy life despite obstacles, there were other difficulties such as children with Spina Bifida struggling to walk, or those who came to camp with terminal cancer diagnoses. “These moments make you realize you can impact someone’s life in both the short and long term, which is one of the greatest gifts you can ever get out of life.” When it comes to working with Autism groups, Farrar trained with Heritage Christian Services and was chosen by a family to spend time as a personal aide for the daughter. Operating with several projects through the community, they’re Coach Farrar launches her novice involved with Autism Up and rowers for their first big race. Spectrum Creative Arts. While not part of a specific group, Farrar works primarily with the family to research different activities and resources. “I strongly suggest people look up Autism or other groups related to intellectual disabilities,” Farrar said. “The individuals in these groups have so much to offer, and they really bring so much to your life, too. You hear about how much they are impacted by your presence in their life, but you never realize until you start working with them how much their presence in your life makes you a better person.” The young woman with whom Farrar works, referred to herein as “Jennifer” to respect her privacy, has been an experience she’s thankful for. “She’s so in-tune to the emotions of those around her. Within a few weeks her bright and cheerful personality helped lift my spirits.” She goes on to say working with this young woman and her family has been a gift, and Farrar goes to work every day knowing she’s going to leave with a smile and her day brightened. “She’ll do little things like sing or dance in

Farrar enjoys the view from the summit of Armstrong Mountain in the Adirondacks! the car to a goofy song or offer you a flower or a piece of her coveted Reese’s chocolate. She wants you to be happy.” Since she started working with Jennifer, Farrar said she’s learned how to live in the present more than the future or dwell on the past. Jennifer has truly made a memorable impact on her life, as with one experience: “I remember one day after I got into a car accident, she came running out of the house yelling ‘Emily, you’re okay!’ and gave me this huge hug, and she’s not really one for hugs. She also doesn’t like using her cell phone, and a few months ago, when I wasn’t feeling well, she called me in the middle of the day to say she missed me.” Emily Farrar has little interest in stepping back from her community or those she works with anytime soon. After further developing the Nazareth College rowing programs, Farrar plans to return to school in order to obtain her PhD in Speech Language Pathology. With an interest in traumatic brain injury in regards to aphasia (the loss of ability to understand or express speech), she hopes to put her future degree to work in a nursing home or with veterans. When it comes to getting involved in the community, Farrar had this advice: “Don’t be afraid of passion. Don’t be afraid to care about your fellow human. Recognize that you can impact someone even if it’s just with a smile, and that can really make all the difference.” Enjoy this article? PAW'S CORNER

533-9307

By Sam Mazzotta DEAR PAW’S CORNER: In a private Facebook group I belong to, someone is offering a pet for adoption, saying it belonged to their recently deceased mother-in-law. They want a $650 fee for “rehoming” the pet, because they say it has AKC registration. Is this a legitimate fee? It seems awfully steep. -- James in Burlington, Vermont DEAR JAMES: Rehoming fees are a fact of life for private pet placements, but $650 to simply adopt a pet is unreasonably steep. That isn’t to say that rehoming fees are a bad thing. A reasonable rehoming fee can prevent a pet from being adopted by people with bad intentions, who can’t financially care for a pet, or who are impulsively adopting a cute little dog that they might abandon at the first hiccup in behavior. The flip side is someone abusing the rehoming fee for personal profit. That person may claim that the fee offsets their costs of caring for the pet, but when the rehoming fee far outstrips the cost of adopting from a shelter, it’s time to proceed with caution. Find out what the local shelter charges to adopt a pet and ask online what average rehoming fees are for your area. If you’re interested in the dog, contact the offerer and find out as many details as possible about its breed, temperament, health and the environment it lives in. Do not send any money beforehand. You need to meet both them and the dog in person, and no money should change hands until both sides agree (in writing, ideally) to the rehoming. Further, if they are truly concerned for the dog’s welfare, they will have questions for you -- maybe even an application -- to make sure you are genuinely adopting the dog and will be a good owner. It’s a good amount to pot a small plant, and I can hold my pot over the bowl to save the soil.” -R.F. in Oregon

PRACTICAL GIFTS FOR RECENT GRADUATES Home luxuries: Outfit soon-to-be college freshmen with some of the niceties of home. Upgrade dorm furniture with accent pillows or a more comfortable mattress. Put together a luxury gift basket with a high-quality robe, electric razor, spa shampoo, and other toiletries.

* Give your buttons a boost! Use clear nail polish to strengthen the strings holding your buttons in place. Just a drop on the face of each button, and let dry. You’ll never know it’s there, but it definitely helps.

* Challenge your school-age kids or grandkids to a “word scavenger hunt” in the daily newspaper. You can have them search for words relating to a particular subject, or have a contest to see who can find the most unusual or complex words. It gets them reading and looking! Preschool-age kids can use a magazine to do a scavenger hunt for certain items, like colors, animals, kitchen items, etc. * Mark a reusable water bottle with time measurements so you’ll know if you are drinking enough during the day.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

At-Home Allergy Shots? The Risk Is Too High ---

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta

DEAR DR. ROACH: After giving myself allergy shots at home for years, my allergy doctor’s group has decided that it’s too dangerous for patients to do this anymore. The allergy practice will no longer send a vial unless you can prove the shot will be given in a medical facility. Even if you are a nurse or doctor yourself, you still must prove that the shot will be given in a medical facility! Of course, there is a charge per shot if you drive across town to have the allergy practice’s nurse give it. Not long after getting this notice, I read an article about a local child who has improved an insulin injection device. After the alteration, several more doses could be extracted. The article also mentioned children being able to give themselves insulin shots at school! This is such an obvious money grab. How can it be safe for children to give themselves insulin at school but too dangerous for adults to give themselves shots at home? Do you know any reason for this change of policy for giving shots other than docs who can’t get more patients, so they bleed the ones they have dry? -- P.S. ANSWER: Insulin therapy is very different from allergy shots. Insulin is routinely given at home, work and school, and is very safe. The difference with an allergy shot is that you are getting a substance you are known to be allergic to. Comparatively, there is a significant risk of an allergic reaction. Only 3% to 5% of people getting allergy immunotherapy will have a systemic reaction, and only 1 out of 5,000 shots or so will require epinephrine. That might not sound like a high risk, but for a busy allergy clinic, that means about one person per month. The epinephrine is used to both treat and prevent life-threatening reactions. The guidelines from allergy experts clearly state that injections must be given under qualified medical supervision. Your doctor’s group was not following the standard of care before. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you mentioned that your smartwatch warns you every hour to stand up. Is this a good idea? What else is it good for? -- D.K. ANSWER: The evidence that standing periodically has health benefits is fair. One study showed that when people did lightintensity activity (such as walking) for two minutes a day instead of sitting, premature death rates were reduced. Prolonged sitting is associated with heart disease, diabetes and overall cancer rates. The evidence isn’t definitive, but it’s suggestive enough that I do get up and walk around (when I can) when my watch reminds me that I’ve been sitting for a long time. It’s not 100% clear that exercise trackers like pedometers and more advanced devices, such as a smartwatch, increase activity for everyone. It clearly does motivate me. I think it’s a personal decision that needs to be made based on whether you need more exercise (nearly everyone would benefit) and whether it would be motivating. I will say that, for many people, the social aspects of it do get some people to exercise more than they would have otherwise. Some devices let you see your friends’ activity and engage in friendly competition and support. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Sharew ith 259,20 0 readers!

A few weeks ago, I was at Walmart in Batavia going through the checkout line, and my card would not register. The kind women behind me just inserted her card and paid for my groceries. I just want to thank her for her generosity and kindness. Thank you! I would like to thank Carrie DiCarlo from Perry Pet in Livonia Center for her graciousness during the loss of my pet dog, Abby. She was very kind and thoughtful during the whole process. She also sent a very nice card with a very nice sentiment. It is truly appreciated and touched my heart. It meant a lot to me. Many thanks, Cheri I would like to thank the person who turned in my debit card at the Dollar General in Livonia.

Last evening, our neighbor had eleven cars lined up along his driveway. We watched as unmasked guests walked into his home. Our Governor has put COVID-19 restrictions in place. It seems that this neighbor and his guests have other ideas. I wonder what the majority of people would think of this behavior. At the grocery store this morning, 5/14, thank you so much for stopping to point me in the right direction whilst I was pushing a stroller with one hand, the wheels turned the wrong way, and it began to move towards the

“enter” side. I had stopped and was attempting to convince the thing to go in the right direction, when you so kindly assumed that I could not read the “exit” sign or see the big orange road cones. Whatever would I do without people like you to take time out of their busy day to point their judgmental finger in the same direction as the arrow on the “exit” sign that’s right in front of my face so that I know which way to go? You can now rest easy knowing you saved lives today. Thank you, social distance warrior. You’re a hero. In my town, nearly everyone is taking COVID-19 precautions, and I’m fine with people wearing masks everywhere they go. However, there is a social network platform, and the people on there are in tinfoil hat mode. At one point, someone illegally took an illegal picture of some minors hanging at a park. They

It was truly appreciated and very honest of you. Many thanks and well wishes to you. A grateful citizen Thank you, Ontario County ARC, for bringing your clients out into nature and leaving painted kindness rocks along trails in powder Mills Park. The artwork and messages are beautiful. I want to thank the angel of a lady who was able to catch my dog on Boughton Rd in Bloomfield on Sunday morning June 21st. My car wouldn’t start, and I was trying to get my dog into a friend’s car as it was hot out. He got scared and bolted from the Boughton Park parking lot and started running down the street. I ran after him, but he was paying no attention to me. She stopped and was able to grab him. What an angel she was! I can’t thank you enough!

proceeded to post it and make such a fuss over them that the town decided to close all the parks. This is a whole new level of stupid, as no one would have gone to the park any ways. To the paranoid people who took and posted the picture, taking pictures of minors without consent by their legal guardian, let alone posting that picture on the internet, is illegal. For future reference, please refrain from criminal activity during bouts of stircraze. I am so sick of seeing how many terrified people are complaining about others not wearing masks. I served my country. I made sacrifices for your liberty and opportunity. Seeing how you discard that liberty without a thought makes me sick. I am free to choose mask or no mask, test or no test, vaccine, or no vaccine. My freedom is not bound by your fear. Dying is not too high a price to pay for the liberty and prosperity that will be my children’s

I would like to thank the LeRoy Village Police Department. We appreciate all that you’ve done. I cannot express how amazing you have been to our community! From stopping by a lemonade stand to showing up with snacks for a drivein movie, to turning on the sirens for a kid passing by, we thank you! A shoutout to the small businesses who have made this time a little more fun for our kids. Paint kits, doughnut and cookie frosting kits, wood flower projects, pizza making kits and more were a huge hit with so many! Thank you for thinking out of the box. We love supporting you! Thank you to our community for making our Graduating Seniors feel special during this crazy year! The banners, yard signs, parades, and adopt-a-senior programs have made them feel so honored. Congratulations Graduates!

inheritance. If you don’t like it, you stay home! The COVID-19 lock down has found many of us struggling financially. Perhaps when this is over, we should all take the time to look at our household budgets. Did you have 60 or even 30 days of cash set aside for a rainy day? Ask yourself do you really need the newest cell phone, the largest flat screen TV, a satellite antenna with those extra pay-per-view channels? Did the local car dealer make you feel so happy and proud to buy the biggest SUV they sold for an extra $49 per month for another 365 days? Maybe the next time the government tells you to sit home for eight weeks with a mask on your face, you can afford to pay for the necessities of life. In the meantime, hide behind your stash of toilet paper when the landlord comes looking for the rent. In God We Trust; the rest pay Cash. Stop complaining.

COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT (NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys.

GRADUATION ETIQUETTE Graduation parties should be all-inclusive. Graduation ceremonies are often followed by parties. If possible, try to coordinate with other friends who are graduating so that parties are not on the same day or at least not at the same time. This way everyone who would like to attend can do so. If friends do attend, The Emily Post Institute suggests that graduates explain to their friends that family will be at the party and that polite behavior is expected.

COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs. In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage. “A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.” Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis. If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive. Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in. Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19. More poll results The poll also found: • Only 17 percent Americans are aware of acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19; • Only 46 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 will likely increase the number of Americans with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure; • 58 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory failure; • 54 percent know it can cause pneumonia; • 52 percent of those surveyed know COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome. Learn More: Additional information about COVID-19 and how it affects kidneys can be found at www.kidney.org/coronavirus.

Use your network. The notion that “it’s not what you know, but who you know” has some truth to it. Successful jobseekers continually expand their professional contacts. This is achieved by going to informational interviews, attending trade association meetings and reviewing trade publications. Target people who work at the companies where you see yourself, so you can get the inside track about job openings.
