Leave young kids at home. Many kids will grow bored after the first yard sale, if not earlier. Hire a sitter and shop unencumbered.

CUSTOM DECKS

Overreliance on lighter fluid: The chemical taste of lighter fluid can transfer to foods even when the fluid is used sparingly. Consider using a chimney starter when grilling with charcoal. And avoid repeated pyrotechnics with fluid, or worse, gasoline.

585-802-1544 HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Open the windows at night. Daytime temperatures, particularly during the dog days of summer, may necessitate the use of air conditioners. But men and women who live in climates where temperatures drop considerably at night can sleep with their windows open. This reduces energy consumption and saves money, and can be a great way to introduce fresh air into a home during a time of year when air can become stagnant.

STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER Gardening is widely considered as relaxing a hobby as it is rewarding. Although gardening when temperatures are mild, such as in spring and fall, can be relaxing, gardening can be much more physically taxing and even dangerous when temperatures rise during the dog days of summer. Gardens need tending even when temperatures outside are especially hot, so gardeners must take steps to protect their health when working in their gardens during the summer.

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

If you must, then work in small sections to keep soap from drying on the car. Rinse off your sponge regularly -- the dirt and grime can scratch the surface. Use a microfiber cloth to dry.

A Tradition For 70 Years!

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars.

HARRIS WILCOX INC. Auctioneers, Realtors & Appraisers

Phone (585) 494-1880 59 South Lake Avenue Bergen, New York 14416 www.harriswilcox.com

“The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times.

Vans, Trucks & Lawn Equipment

Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day.

Magic Maze NUTTY WORDS

Beat the heat during a summer wedding Tailor the reception menu to the weather. A large, heavy meal may not be what guests are hoping for when temperatures are especially hot. In such situations, provide some cool, light fare, such as chilled salads or cold soups, as first courses. Sorbet can be a cool palate cleanser, and grilled meats and vegetables will make for a satisfying, light main course. Ice cream cake may be a decadent option in lieu of more traditional wedding cake.

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Free Entertainment To help us stay away from the mainstream news that has nothing but disturbing commentary and visuals, I've compiled a list of more upbeat places to investigate online. Best of all -- they're free! Games - Do online searches for your favorite games to play on your computer, such as Scrabble, crossword puzzles, mahjong and vintage Pac Man, Myst and Donkey Kong. (Use "classic games" or "retro games" as your search terms for the old ones.) Language classes - Duolingo (www.duolingo.com) is the best language learning site I've found, and you don't have to pay anything! They keep track of your progress and move you right along once you've mastered a section. At this point there are over 30 languages you can study. Classic TV shows - See if you have MeTV (www.metv.com)on your cable TV lineup. It shows all classics. You'll find "The Andy Griffith Show," "The Twilight Zone," "Mannix," "Barnaby Jones," "The Flintstones," "Wagon Train," "The Waltons," "The Carol Burnett Show," "I Love Lucy," "Perry Mason" and much more. Check the website for the shows and schedule for your area. Vintage music - While you're on the MeTV website, click Music at the top for free vintage tunes. Or you can search in a browser for "free online music" and find dozens of vintage music archives. Even Gutenberg has free music, everything from Bach to Irving Berlin. However, you need to listen to only one at a time on Gutenberg.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GREAT WEDDING GIFT IDEAS Airline miles: Though it might be unconventional, gifting airline miles to the happy couple may save them hundreds of dollars. Men and women with ample airline miles should determine if their agreement allows them to transfer those miles to a loved one. If so, transferring the miles won’t cost the person doing the gifting any money out of pocket, but it can save couples substantial amounts of money on their next trip, including their honeymoon if they have yet to book one.

1.How often should I be harvesting the herbs in my garden? Herbs should be harvested when the oils that provide their flavor and aroma are at their highest. Once the plant has enough foliage to maintain growth, you can begin harvesting. For instance, Basil can be harvested when the plant reaches 6-8 inches high; sprigs of Oregano once the plant is 3-4 inches tall; Cilantro when the stems are 6-12 inches long. When you cut stems, leave new growth below the cut so that the plant will become bushier. The rule of thumb is to cut no more than 1/3 of the plant

back at a time so that it will continue to grow and thrive throughout the season. Cut a few stems at a time. Depending on the size of the plant or the number of them you have, you may be able to harvest every few days. Young leaves have the best flavor, so continue to cut back 2 or 3 nodes of new growth on a regular basis. The best time to harvest is in the morning when the morning dew has evaporated, and the plant is dry. Dusk is fine as well. Avoid harvesting in the heat of the day. Herbs are best harvested before they start to flower (or bolt) to ensure that they continue to produce new leaves suitable for harvesting.

I have Irises that are beautiful but taking over my garden, should I be dividing them yearly? Iris is a very tough plant. If it is in a good location it will spread readily. The iris tubers grow best with the top of the tuber just above the soil surface. They grow longer each year, and may also produce offshoots on the sides, which will form new tubers.

If you dig one up, you will find the healthiest roots on the “front” end, where the flower stem emerges. It will not produce more flowers further back on that tuber. You can cut off the back end, then replant. Yours are blooming nicely, so you could just remove some plants around the edges and give them away each year. If you notice the bed is not flowering well over time, you may need to thin it by removing the spent ends.

Cat Raids Trash Can for Kitchen Scraps DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Blaze” has figured out how to lift the lid on the kitchen trash can. He’ll hop in there at any opportunity to get at the food scraps. I don’t want him eating those, and I’m worried he’ll get sick from raw or spoiled food. How can I stop this behavior? -- C.J. in Santa Monica, California

DECOR IDEAS TO GIVE HOMES A FRESH LOOK THIS SPRING PASTEL COLORS: Nothing embodies the spring quite like pastel colors. If colorful, bright flowers dot the garden in the backyard, homeowners can bring those uplifting pastels inside by painting an accent wall or even adding some brightly colored accent furniture to rooms that could use a lift.

O’Neill’s

Tent For Rent

DEAR C.J.: I know that’s annoying! Cats are opportunists, escape artists and seemingly expert lockpickers that will take every chance to explore something that smells interesting. A trash can filled with food scraps is often irresistible. Once a cat has figured out where all the good table scraps are, it’s going to be very hard to train them out of that particular behavior. You can still try some deterrents. When you’re in the kitchen and see Blaze creeping toward the trash can, hiss loudly and say “Nyah!” or “Leave it!” Or, keep a shaker can filled with pennies within reach and shake it at him when he approaches the trash can. When you’re not in the kitchen, Blaze may still keep trying to get into the trash can. For now, bungee or tape down the lid so that he can’t pry it upward with his paws. Then, look for a trash can that has a locking lid, which will be much harder for your cat to lift up. This will be a huge help at night, when you can’t rush into the kitchen to try and stop Blaze from his nighttime raids. Best of luck, and remember to be patient and consistent with deterrent training methods.

Fairport’s RV&E Bike and Skate Maintains Momentum Despite Pandemic By Amanda Dudek

D

oug Sharp, owner of RV&E Bike and Skate in Fairport, is an avid cyclist with an active family. When COVID-19 struck and New York went on Pause, helping others stay mobile became even more important. Fortunately, RV&E was able to continue doing so. “We were deemed essential and stayed open on a limited basis with appointments only,” said Sharp. With fewer employees and most communication now taking place via telephone, he had his hands full. “Our phone turned into our primary stream of business, and it almost felt like we were in a call center,” Sharp recalled. “We had never kept a day calendar before, and now we were putting all our appointments in one. With reduced staff that first month, it became very chaotic, particularly when people realized we were open when they couldn’t go to many other places.” Sharp praised customers for their patience and understanding. “Our customers arrived on time and politely waited their turn,” he said. “We filled every time slot we had open. Perhaps not surprisingly, we saw an uptick of people just being outside and doing approved recreational sports like cycling which nearly everyone can do. People needed bicycles, tires, repairs– you name it. Our Service Department has been very busy.” It is showing no signs of slowing. “We have new bikes that come in each day,” confirmed Sharp. “Even so, we may only have one adult currently available; the rest are pre-ordered and waiting for delivery because the industry is experiencing a shortage. People have been buying everything they need and even things they do not. The world has turned upside down with delays in us receiving even small parts for repairs at times. We have been working at a gruelling pace.”

RV&E carries special supplies and equipment. stayed inside for the first month or so. Our doors did not reopen until Phase III. Now, we have our college students back, and it has been busy every day.” Fairport’s Liftbridge, which closed in September of last year, has been a cause of concern when it comes to traffic for local businesses. However, Sharp, who is also president of the Fairport-Perinton Merchants Association, states it hasn’t really stopped people from coming to RV&E Bike. “Through the 2019 holidays, things were still very good for us with people using alternative routes,” explained Sharp. “Now, people continue to use alternative routes. We have been very lucky for that part.” It wasn’t just luck. Sharp explained that the Fairport-Perinton Merchants Association, the Village, the Fairport-Perinton Partnership, the Fairport-Perinton Chamber and the Mayor and other local officials worked weekly to make certain there was a lot of signage which has been key in maintaining local traffic flow. “Even now, because of COVID, more people are out walking and checking out places maybe they normally wouldn’t,” he observed. “The Fairport-Perinton Merchants Association also posts regular updates on our website regarding which members are open, closed, selling online and curbside,” said Sharp. “People are finding alternative ways of doing business and taking care of their customers. Our farmers market has even started again.” Sharp encourages neighbors to continue to support area businesses as best they can. “While places are reopening, please continue to support them. Visit our website, www.FinditinFairport.com for the most up-to-date information about local businesses and know that we appreciate you.”

Customer appreciation continues to make all the difference. “Our community has absolutely paid attention to and supported local businesses including ours,” said Sharp. “They have been phenomenal, and we couldn’t be any happier with that. When they thank us for being here, being open, providing what the big box stores do not, we feel like it’s really worth it.” “We know we were one of the lucky ones,” admits Sharp. “It grew very quiet in the Village of Fairport. There were very few cars on the road, and people were understanding, listened to what they were supposed to do, and

One positive thought in the morning can change your whole day. A SPECIAL THANK YOU! I want to give a special thank you to the “greeter” I had at Walmart on June 30th. His name is Bob. When he saw me walking with a cane, Bob immediately took my arm and helped get me a riding cart. Bob was so gentle and caring. He blessed my whole day! He also helped me when I came out. Walmart is very blessed to have such a man as Bob working for them.

CLEANLINESS IS THE BEST PREVENTION Wearing masks is really a false sense of security, as touching your face is the more real danger if you don’t wash your hands with soap and water. So, it doesn’t matter if you wear a face mask or not if you don’t use prudent cleansing whether you are out in public or not. Wash your hands! I have seen restaurant workers not washing their hands before touching others’ food orders, so the real danger is lack of cleanliness. My taste of music is different from yours, and by the time it makes its way inside my home, the sound is very distorted and sounds horrible. I am trying to work, sleep, read, or watch TV over here, which is a very basic right I have as a homeowner, but your music is making it impossible to do the things I want to do. Please don’t put me in the uncomfortable position of having to talk to you about it. I’ve tolerated it without saying anything because I try to be a good neighbor. It’s not right, and you’re not being neighborly, considerate, or thoughtful. Actions affect others.

That reminds me of an old saying from a comedian, “Here comes the judge.” At least the skit was funny when the comic said it. Your post made no sense whatsoever.

I am addressing those who aren’t wearing their masks in public, only come into the store for one thing, are rude to other people and employees, and are being jerks. I am an essential worker. This is obscene! it isn’t progress, only gouging, and ditto electric windows and doors. ROAD RAGE I was on a main road during this time out in the country not on a bumpy country road where I want to wreck my car by going 60 through potholes and bumps. On the main road that links to these country roads however, it is not illegal to go five mph over from 55 to 60, especially when I’m terrified the person behind me is so close they’re a hair’s breath away from causing an accident. That’s not speeding, and it’s not necessary to go 70, 80, 90, 100 down roads, main roads or country ones or back roads. Just stop.

How To Stay Positive While Social Distancing

Make your appointment today! (585) 424-5710 Convenient Brighton location 200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester

As recently as late February, much of the populations of the United States and Canada were living life as they normally would. A few short weeks later, when COVID-19 began to affect a greater number of people, many businesses grinded to a halt. Schools were closed to students, and governments instructed people to stay home as much as possible. “Social distancing” quickly became part of the general lexicon, with people in many cities and towns staying six feet apart from others when venturing into the public, but mainly staying at home. While it is still too soon to determine the lasting impact of COVID-19, the psychological effects of social distancing were apparent almost immediately. Anyone who has had some trauma in the past may discover that social distancing rekindled previous traumatic feelings. Any form of isolation can be devastating to a person’s mood because they are left with their own thoughts. Various strategies can help to ease the potential psychological burden of social distancing and give people a new perspective on their situation. • Focus on the positives. Look at what you have gained rather than lost from social distancing. This may translate to more time with the family; opportunities to exercise more; time to engage in a hobby; or chances to finish up projects around the house. • Get fresh air. Where laws allow, make time daily to get outdoors, even if it’s for a short jaunt around the neighborhood. Seeing new sights can be good for the mind, and exercise is also good for the body. • Establish a routine. A routine helps anyone feel more in control, which is helpful when so much of the consequences of COVID-19 are beyond individuals’ control. Get up and go to bed on your typical schedule, eat meals at regular intervals and make time for different activities each day. • Reach out to people. Social distancing does not mean you have to cease being social. Contact friends or family on the phone, through video chats or even speak with them at a safe distance in person. If you need professional help, many therapists now offer telehealth therapy sessions. • Turn off the news. Take a break from the constant onslaught of information. This can reduce stress and anxiety and allow the brain to focus on positive thoughts and ideas. • Express gratitude. Give thanks for what you have each day and try to help others who may be less fortunate than you. Social distancing has been a trial for everyone involved. Certain strategies can help turn grief into gratitude. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Purchase eco-friendly accessories. A way to make a fitness routine more environmentally friendly is to purchase workout accessories that do not have large carbon footprints. Instead of single-use plastic water bottles, purchase a reusable water bottle made of recycled materials. In addition, opt for workout gear made of organic or recycled materials. Such items can be found online or at sporting goods stores or retailers that cater to outdoors enthusiasts.
