Best Prices - from Routine Maintenance to Major Repairs
FALLETI MOTORS, Inc. SALES • SERVICE • DETAILING 504 Ellicott St., Batavia • 343-2222 Servicing Genesee County Since 1978
On October 1st I was shopping at Honeoye Falls Marketplace. A nice couple was in front of me paying for their groceries. They bought two baked chickens. I said "your dinner is ready". The man smiled at me and waved to the cashier. He pointed at my groceries and said "add those on my bill" What a wonderful experience! Thanks again! Grateful to the City of Batavia for the scarecrows on Main Street. So fun and festive! It's nice to drive down Main Street and see how creative people are!
To the "boy" who was behind me on his motorcycle in the middle of the busy [local town] intersection going to the left. I'm not turning quickly rushing the already gone arrow just because you need to get where you're going. Then you make a scene and scream at me about being a bad driver and calling me disgusting names. You're clearly the one who needs to get off the road. I hope your license gets revoked or you get arrested for road rage because that was shameful and rude. Don't assume she knows the neighbors can see her. When the sun is shining it reflects off the windows making it hard to see inside. Why don't you try talking to her about it? If all else fails, you could just not look into her yard. People have a right to be nude in their own homes.
It's hard to find time these days with work, home, family, etc. to spend on any volunteer activity but there are so many areas in your own community that need help. To those who volunteer, keep up the good work! Thank you to all the lovely people who still hold the door open for those behind them. It may seem like such a little thing, but in a small way, it lets others know that you see them and that you care enough to pause a
Some clarification is needed. Feeding vermin is actually frowned upon by the NYS DEC. Feeding (baiting) deer is illegal in NYS. Look it up. As for the Bible quote, have you ever heard "do unto others as you would have them do unto you"? Feeding squirrels causes damage to home and property, plain and simple. By the way, our neighbor has more money than the Lord himself and far more than we do. We do our gardening ourselves and buy what we can afford. Fences do not keep vermin out, and twenty foot fences would be necessary to keep deer out which is against village code. Last note, flowers are a gift from God too that we have tried to nurture also and those won't eat holes in screens and cause property damage. I do believe trained service animals serve an important role. But they don't belong in grocery carts! And that nasty pad used to line the cart isn't cutting it. I do applaud [local store], they post at entrances service animals CANNOT be placed in carts. My wife and I were shopping in [local town] in 2 different stores. The first store we were in there was a couple in front of us

moment to show them courtesy. All these little kindnesses create a better world. Thank you. The Teresa House Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers would like to send many thanks to all of our Annual Campaign donors- past & present. We are constantly amazed by the generosity of our community! Your donations are used in the day-today operations of caring for the terminally ill and their families. It is only through your generosity
walking down the isle and their little dog pooped on the floor; they did pick it up but never went to the service desk so someone could clean it up correctly. In the second store, we watched a couple take their dog and load it in a shopping cart. Now the shopping carts are meant for your food items and your young child. In both cases, these dogs weren't service dogs, and they did not belong in the stores shopping with their owners. I like dogs, but there is a time and place for your pets, and shopping in a store is not the place. Your truck passed me and another car on a double solid line. You think you are so smart? You're going to be the ones in a coffin someday, when you don't get back in time of oncoming traffic. You people who pass our wide trailer and my car and the truck pulling the trailer, I've seen you barely have time to get back in on time from traffic in opposite direction. You seem to have a death wish because one of these days, you being in a huge hurry, you're going to get nailed from you taking stupid chances. Your choice. You think your lawlessness is permissible, I'm sure one day you will pay the price.
that the ministry of Teresa House can continue. Special thanks to the many donors who contribute every year. We are blessed to live in such a caring community.
You were lucky your fireworks stopped. I was going to call the cops. It's illegal at this time of year and in our county it isn't legal, period. Being so dry out as it has been, it's not a smart thing to do. Anyhow putting all this aside, if you haven‚'t noticed it's not the Fourth of July. But if I ever hear them again, first boom, I will be calling the sheriff's office Not even four months ago myself, as well as other residents of this small hamlet received notice that our sidewalk would be extended. This was joyous news, for children walk on this road, people walk their dogs, and people in general are out walking or exercising. This is a busy route and this was long overdue. However, here we are now the summer is over, yet no sidewalk. I find it frustrating and embarrassing that this around 1/2-1 mile sidewalk extension is so hard to produce. Whether it's the town to which this hamlet belongs is at fault, or the community itself taking it's time to "take the right or low bid" it's inexcusable. It's been four months and it's a sidewalk! So if you are in charge of this project and are reading this, please hurry it up and lets extend it before winter comes.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2018
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The high standards you set for yourself don’t always translate into the behavior you expect of others. That relationship problem can be resolved if you’re more flexible and less judgmental. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Not enough party bids to satisfy the Bovine’s fun-loving side this week? Go ahead and throw one of your own. Then prepare for some serious work coming up early next week. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A new and intensely productive cycle is about to kick in. Be careful not to get too stressed out, though. Make time to restore your energies by relaxing with family and friends. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) This could be a good time to share some of your plans with those closest to you. Their comments could give you some added insight into how you might accomplish your goals. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) An attack of self-doubt might be unsettling for the usually super-assured Feline. But it could be your inner voice telling you to hold off implementing your plans until you’ve reassessed them. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a great time for you to reward yourself for all your hard work by taking a trip you haven’t spent months carefully planning, to somewhere you never thought you’d be going. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Some misunderstandings resist being resolved. But your sincerity in wanting to soothe those hurt feelings wins the day. By month’s end, that relationship should begin to show signs of healing. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A hectic job schedule begins to ease just in time to blow off all that work-generated steam on Halloween. A family situation runs into an unexpected complication. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A cutting remark in the workplace needs to be handled with finesse. Remember: How you respond could determine the depth of support you gain from colleagues. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Once again, that Capricornean stubborn streak sets in and could keep you from getting much-needed advice. Fortunately, it lifts by week’s end, in time to make an informed decision. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) A surprise trip early in the week could lead to other unexpected offers when you return. Word to the wise: Avoid talking too much about this until you’ve made some decisions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Learning dominates the week for perspicacious Pisceans, who are always looking to widen their range of knowledge. A series of important joblinked commitments begins late in the week. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of humor generates good feelings and good will everywhere you go. HOW TO MAKE EXISTING WINDOWS MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Install windows films. Plastic window films are another option for homeowners looking to improve the energy efficiency of their windows. Heat shrink film can be cut to fit each individual leaky window in a home and then attached to windows using double-sided tape. A hair dryer can then be used to shrink the film and remove any wrinkles. Low-emissivity, or Low-E, coatings are a more expensive alternative to heat shrink film, and they can be equally effective at improving energy efficiency. Installation of Low-E coatings can be more difficult, as they do not provide as much leeway for mistakes during application as heat shrink film.

Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

M aintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride
Costum eContest
Tire alignment is a w ay to reduce w ear on tires and help avoid steering and “ pulling” problems. Bridgestone Tires defines tire alignment as an adjustment of the vehicle’s suspension, or the system that connects a vehicle to its w heels. W hen tires are not properly aligned, drivers may notice uneven tread w ear. M isaligned tires also may cause the vehicle to pull to the left or right. Drivers w ho notice their steering w heel is off-center or vibrating w hen they are driving may need to adjust their tires’ alignment. Camber, or the inw ard or outw ard angle of the tire w hen view ed from the front of the vehicle, w ill be adjusted. In addition, “ toe,” or the extent to w hich the tires turn inw ard or outw ard w hen view ed from above, w ill be adjusted. Caster angle also helps balance steering, stability and cornering. Caster is the angle of your steering axis w hen view ed from the side of your vehicle. W hen tires are balanced correctly and aligned, vehicles w ill offer a smooth ride w ith little to no vibrations. Having tires serviced can maximize their performance and lifespan.

STAY SAFE IN BRIGHT DRIVING CONDITIONS Make sure the windshield is clean. Water marks, dead insects, cracks, and road grime can make it even harder to see out of the windshield when the sun is blazing. Clean windshields regularly, and don’t wait until you’re head-on into the sun to engage the windshield washer spray. Doing so may only further compromise visibility.

It is easy for motorists to take their tires for granted w hen everything is w orking correctly. W heels and suspension systems bear the w eight of cars and trucks and must bear the brunt of rough roads, pot holes and any additional obstacles, so some w ear and tear is to be expected. M any drivers know to monitor their tire pressure, but it’s also important to check for w orn treads and inspect tires for punctures or damage. Did you ever have a hunch…a strong but unexplained feeling that something was going to happen? Most of us have hunches but we probably never think of them as having anything to do with “creativity.” Whether instinct or intuition, hunches have probably been responsible for some weighty decisions over the centuries. The military genius of Napoleon, the financial wizardry of the Rockefellers…perhaps they were the result of creative hunches that shaped the form of history. We take pride in providing this community with an essential service, rendered in accordance with the highest ethical standards of our profession.

How you can benefit from having a pet Pets have been kept for centuries. Statistics from various sources indicate North Americans own millions of dogs, cats, birds, small mammals, and reptiles. Pets’ affable nature and loving looks are enough for many people to welcome them into their homes, but the benefits of having a pet extends beyond their appearances and temperaments. • Pets can help prevent loneliness. Loneliness affects people of all ages, but it is particularly problematic among seniors. Older adults who may be isolated can benefit from having a pet around. According to a study published in Aging & Mental Health, older adults who owned pets were 36 percent less likely to say they were lonely compared to those who didn’t have an animal companion. • Pets can save lives. Pets can be trained to perform various tasks around the house and in the community. Rescue animals assist in finding people after natural disasters. Medical alert pets can help people with debilitating illnesses and assist physically impaired people with everyday tasks. • Pets help lower allergy risks. Keeping pets around can reduce a child’s likelihood of developing allergies by as much as 33 percent, according to a study by pediatrician James E. Gern that was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. People exposed early on to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall. • Pets provide socialization opportunities. A pet can be the common denominator to strike up new friendships and connect with others. Whether walking around the neighborhood or being part of a pet obedience class or interest group, pets can help their owners expand their social circles. • Pets can help combat stress. Talking to or stroking a pet can
Receiving a diploma is something to take seriously, even for those students w ho are somew hat older than their fellow graduates. In 2003, Gustava Bennett Burrus graduated from Richmond High School outside of San Fransisco, Calif., at the age of 97. Ruth Hayes Green graduated from the Adult High School of the Perth Amboy, New Jersey Adult Education Center in 2010 at age 98. In 2013, 106-year-old Fred Butler, a student at Beverly High School in M assachusetts, received his high school diploma. He broke the Guinness World Record for oldest graduate previously held by Allan Stew art of Australia, w ho received a Bachelor of Law s degree at age 91 from the University of New England, New South Wales, Australia.

make stress easier to handle. A study from researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo found that, when conducting a stressful task, people experienced less stress when their pets were with them. Various other studies and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found having a pet around can lower blood pressure, ease anxiety and may even help to lessen aches and pains. Pets provide unconditional love, which can be beneficial to someone facing depression or post traumatic stress disorder. • Pets help teach responsibility. Taking care of a pet can help children and adults become more responsible. According to the American Pet Product Association’s 2011-2012 National Pet Owners Survey, 58 percent of pet owners say their pets help teach their kids to be responsible through routine care, exercise and feeding of the animal. Pets are more than mere companions. In fact, pets can offer numerous health and well-being benefits to people of all ages.

TOP TIPS FOR BUYING SAFE TOYS by Joan Lawrence (NAPSI)—For happier holidays with your family, here are answers to parents’ most frequently asked questions about toy safety: Q. How do I pick out safe toys? A. Choose a toy that matches your child’s age and interests. Always follow the age grading on toy packaging and be sure to keep toys labeled 3+ away from children under 3. These toys may contain small parts, which are a choking hazard. Q. Are certain toy brands safer than others? A. All toys sold in the U.S. must comply with strict federal safety standards. So when you shop at a reputable retailer, you can feel confident that the toys sold in the establishment are safe. Q. Is it safe to buy a toy from a seller I’m not familiar with? A. Whether online or in person, shop only at retailers you know and trust. Store staff at established businesses will be knowledgeable about the toys on their shelves and websites. Exercise caution when buying toys at flea markets, garage sales and unknown online sellers, as these vendors may not be monitoring for recalled products. Q. How do I find out if a toy has been recalled? A. Only 0.003 percent of the 3 billion toys sold each year are recalled. Stay informed by visiting PlaySafe.org for a current list of recalled products. Q. What’s your last piece of advice for parents? A. Always supervise your children at play and demonstrate the correct way to use a toy or game. For more tips on toy safety, visit www.PlaySafe.org, now available in English and Spanish. • Ms. Lawrence, the “Toy Safety Mom,” is a lifelong child safety advocate with more than 20 years of experience in the toy industry and senior vice president of standards and regulatory affairs at The Toy Association.

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy ACIDIC SOLUTION While some have adopted the habit of drinking an early-morning glass of hot water with lemon juice to get their digestive systems working, this supposedly healthy routine does their teeth no favors. The fact is that lemon juice is a strong acid that eats away at tooth enamel. As this erosion occurs, the teeth may become increasingly sensitive. As the tooth enamel weakens further, it effectively dissolves to the point where fissures may appear. Over time, as the enamel erodes, the underlying dentin will begin to show through the translucent enamel. At that point, teeth will appear to be yellow and will become increasingly so. Unfortunately, no amount of tooth-whitening products can counteract this effect. In addition to our commitment to patient health and well-being, we also dedicate ourselves to keeping our patients out of the dental chair. BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL provides
the highest quality of preventive care, including sound dietary advice, so that you’ll spend less time in treatment and more time enjoying your healthy smile. We offer complete general dental care, from cleanings to full mouth reconstruction to repair of any damage done by neglect or trauma. We also provide cosmetic dentistry here at 6 Batavia City Centre, for the sunniest smiles possible. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment. P.S. Dentists strongly suggest that if you do drink highly acidic beverages, you sip them through a straw. In addition, never brush your teeth after drinking or eating acidic drinks or foods, when tooth enamel is most vulnerable.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
After Hep C Is Treated, What About Cirrhosis? --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 59-year-old woman who was recently diagnosed with hepatitis C and cirrhosis. I have never been a drinker. I was treated with Harvoni for three months. I understand the medication is intended to cure the hepatitis C. What about the cirrhosis? My doctor hasn’t explained any of my long-term effects from taking this. -- C.J. ANSWER: Hepatitis C is a common infection of the liver. It is caused by a virus, which can be transmitted by blood and blood products, as well as through sharing needles for injection drugs. It is rarely transmitted sexually. Anyone with a history of injection drug use, who received blood transfusions or organ transplants before 1992, or who received clotting factors before 1987 should be tested, as should anyone with a known blood or sexual exposure to someone with hepatitis C. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends testing all adults born in the United States between 1945 and 1965, anyone who is HIV-infected, who received hemodialysis or was incarcerated. The treatment you have taken (Harvoni) is a combination of ledipasvir and sofosbuvir, and has an excellent cure rate. The cure rate is 99 percent in people who had never been treated before and who did not have cirrhosis. Even people like you, with cirrhosis, had a cure rate of 94 percent with 12 weeks of therapy in the trial that got the medication approved. Cirrhosis is liver damage and scarring as a result of liver disease. Once it has developed, it is not reversible; however, a successful cure of the hepatitis C virus greatly reduces the risk of further damage, specifically reducing the need for liver transplant and the rates of death, liver cancer and other liver-related complications. These medications are so new that I can’t estimate how much lower your risk of further damage to your liver is post-treatment; however, there is little doubt that your likely successful treatment will substantially improve your expected length and quality of life. But, since you still have cirrhosis, you will need to take some important precautions. These include continued abstinence from alcohol, careful monitoring of prescription and non-prescription medications, avoiding raw shellfish and making sure your immunizations are up-to-date. You should keep asking your gastroenterologist questions until you are satisfied. I recommend you make a list of questions to ask, and bring a friend to help make sure you understand the answers you get. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Should your blood pressure go higher as you age? Is the top number or the bottom more important? I don’t like medicine, and my blood pressure was 145/82, but the top number sometimes goes to 150-158. -- J.S. ANSWER: Both the systolic (top number) and diastolic blood pressures are important, and the difference between them is occasionally important (for example, a blood pressure of 160/60 is more worrisome than 160/85). Blood pressure does go up with age, but even in people over 60, the recommendation is still to get the BP down below 150, and I try to aim for 140 if there aren’t too many side effects. It often takes several tries to find a regimen that gets the blood pressure where it should be without affecting quality of life. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. www.SalmonOrthodontics.com REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE (NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications. “AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack. “If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

Call 226-8111, 343-3111, 393-1111 or 637-5100 4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Don’t share why you want the raise. When discussing a potential raise, keep it about business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect.
